Local included in 100 Years, 100 Quilts Exhibit To honour our fallen soldiers at Gallipoli and to commemorate one of Australia’s most defining times, quilters from far and wide have been invited to create an artwork inspired by our war history. More than 100, captivating and poignant 25cm quilts capturing each artist’s interpretation of Australia’s involvement in the First World War, will be showcased together as a mosaic at a special exhibition from October 7th to 11th at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. With the choice of material and technique left up to each artist, the creative prowess of the quilters sparked a range of incredible interpretations from fallen soldiers and tributes to family members who served at Gallipoli, to quilts honouring bravery and selflessness, as well as iconic imagery such as the cross and poppies. Among the entrants whose quilt has been included in the inspiring exhibition, is Frances Mintrom of Gordonvale, with her quilt entitled, Remember Them (pictured). Her quilt was inspired by the immense sacrifice and loss of life seen on the battlefields and illustrates a soldier remembering his fallen mates at sunset. She also included a poppy to represent the bloodshed on the frontline. After a vast amount of research, the practical aspect only took Frances about three hours to complete. “I wanted to honour the soldiers in an accurate way so I made sure to do my research. Once I had my idea, I experimented with rare edged applique, free machine stitching, and 3-D applique”, said Frances. Frances is a self-taught quilter having begun after the birth of her daughter nearly 40 years ago. “My first quilt was a baby quilt for my daughter. I had never seen a quilt nor did I know anyone who had made one.

I eventually taught myself, making many mistakes and learning lots over the years”, laughs Frances. Since then she has come a long way entering numerous local shows and has even had some of her original patterns published. “I have received several first places and other prizes such as the people's choice award”, says Frances adding, “I mostly enjoy playing with colour and pattern of quilts. I like the sculptural affect that quilting adds to the finished piece”. Event organiser, Judy Newman believes, just like herself, visitors will be in awe of the way artists have chosen to depict the powerful subject. She explains, “As we unpacked the quilts and read the statements about the work, we were reaching for the tissues. So many people have created tributes to family members they never knew, to women who received the ‘terrible letter’ on more than one occasion, to family members who they farewelled and never saw again. There are the iconic images of the Great War – poppies and fields of crosses. There are actual fabrics and relics too – medal ribbons and pieces of uniforms. These are small works but filled with stories stitched with much emotion.”

Yarrabah State School wins Language Grant Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt announced Yarrabah State School had won a $20,000 Languages innovation and improvement grant. Mr Pitt said the grant encouraged state schools to pursue excellence and innovation in teaching languages. “I’m proud to announce Yarrabah State School has received the grant as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s efforts to prepare students to be global citizens of the future,” he said. “I congratulate Yarrabah State School on receiving what is one of the first state-funded grants set up in Queensland to boost language education in our state schools. “The grant will be used to improve delivery and experience of traditional Indigenous language (Gunggay) learning at Yarrabah. It also recognises the amazing work done by Mulgrave language teachers and the more than 150,000 Prep to Year 12 state school students currently studying a language in Queensland.” Mr Pitt said winning applications were innovative and were selected because of their focus on students and potential for school-wide improvement. “Winners had to demonstrate a strong evidence base for every key component of their program,” he said. “Each of them will be required to submit an interim report by March next year and a final report by December 2016. This will ensure grant money delivers real results and it will also allow other schools to share best practice and apply creative but proven new models in their own schools.” State schools determine which languages they offer based on consultation with local school communities. Some languages currently being taught include Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Spanish and various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

The Rise and Fall of Glenboughton Estate (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) In the late 1880’s, the Queensland Government had surveyors and prospectors in the field in North Qld. They were reporting back to the Government of mineral finds and thousands of acres of arable land. There were stands of native timber just waiting for someone to exploit them. Men of all nationalities flocked to the North seeking their fortune. Two of those early entrepreneurs were Clayton and Hill who were English pioneers. They accepted a grant of some 2000 acres in a valley with a permanent creek directly across the Trinity Inlet to the east of Cairns. They named the valley Glenboughton Estate after fond memories of their English homeland. With Clayton being an accountant and John Hill more of a ‘hands on’ practical person, they formed a great business partnership. Their next step was to clear and plant the northern bank of the creek on their property, so they took advantage of the flood of Chinese migratory labour and set up a share farming basis. They then introduced cattle with a view to supplying the rapidly growing settlement across the Inlet, which we call Cairns today. They realised there was a potential for a whole milk market right on their doorstep and introduced a dairy heard to the property. Hill and Clayton were now growing grain crops to supplement their dairy herd and had built a large milking shed sufficient for 24 milking cows. The afternoon’s milk would be scalded and held overnight, then mixed with the fresh morning milk and taken down the tramline in a small trolley pulled by a trotting horse. The milk would be then loaded into a boat and rowed across the Inlet to a distributor who then took charge of the operation with his horse and cart. They also built a narrow gauge tramline from the milking shed to a newly constructed wharf opposite No.2 wharf on the cairns side of the Inlet one and a half miles across a salt pan. As there was plenty of good timber on the estate, a steam-powered sawmill was installed to produce timber for workers cottages. They built 11 cottages on the southern side of the milking sheds to house English migrant families who worked on the farm. By this time, the Chinese migrants who were farm sharing with Clayton and Hill, were producing large quantities of bananas, pineapples and assorted vegetables. They built another tram line on the northern creek bank which terminated in the mangroves on Hill’s Creek at a deepwater mooring. They also were taking their produce to sell to the township of Cairns via the lower reaches of Hill’s Creek and across Trinity Inlet. Somewhere between 1910 and 1915, the partners advertised for a housekeeper. Mrs Mary Jane Chamberlain, a divorcee with three young children, was appointed. She was a very well educated and energetic woman and found it very easy to assimilate and settle into the pioneer way of life. To be continued...

Far Northerners urged to have their say on domestic violence Far Northerners have been asked to provide their feedback and insight on the Not Now, Not Ever report into domestic and family violence. Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said too many lives were being lost to domestic violence, highlighted by the tragic events of the last two weeks, and has asked the whole community to get involved in taking action to eliminate domestic and family violence. “As a community we need to come together and say enough is enough,” Mr Pitt said. “This is not a Cairns-specific or a Cassowary Coast or even a Queensland problem. It is a national problem, and we need to be part of a national response to find a solution. That is why the Palaszczuk Government has accepted all 140 recommendations of the taskforce report Not Now, Not Ever – Putting an End to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland by former Governor-General Quentin Bryce. “The draft Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy is intended to be a vehicle for far-reaching change in our efforts to eliminate domestic and family violence from Queensland. The three month feedback period on the government's draft strategy has commenced and Queenslanders including service providers, community organisations and members of the general public are encouraged to provide input. “This problem is the responsibility of the whole community and extends beyond just legislation and government programs. It is something that needs to be discussed and addressed in a wide variety of settings, including our homes, our workplaces, our family gatherings, our schools, our pubs and sporting clubs, our churches and our service organisations. I want the next generation of young boys and girls to grow up in a state where they really are equals and where violence and mistreatment of women isn't tolerated in any shape or form.” Copies of the report and the government response along with a survey are available from the Mulgrave Electorate Office located at 94-96 Norman Street, Gordonvale. The feedback period closes on the 16th November 2015.

Pyramid Powering to Great Heights The message from the Pyramid Power AFL footy club in Gordonvale is clear. We are a club that breeds success and we are a very viable sporting option for Gordonvale and district youth. To reinforce that message the Pyramid Power Under 13’s won the club’s 4th AFL Cairns Juniors premiership last weekend when they defeated the favourites, Cairns Saints, in the Grand Final. The final score of 16 11 107 to 3 2 20 showed a domination on the day, but that came on the back of an amazing season where the team went from a struggling outfit to a premiership team under the coaching of local footy legend, Jimmy Floyd (Mr Jimbo). The day began with the Under 8’s team taking the field for their grand final day match in front of an enthusiastic crown at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns. Later in the day the Colts team (Under 17.5 age group) went down to the Cape York Eagles in an exciting game. The final scores saw the Eagles 9 6 60 defeat Power 4 7 31. In another highly successful season for the Pyramid Power club (they have now competed in 9 grand finals across age groups since 2007 with 4 premierships) the people who make the club tick were also recognised. Club founders, Jim and Marie Floyd, won the AFL Cairns Juniors award for Volunteers of the Year. Rarely have two people been so deserving of such an honour and the decision was greeted with great respect and enthusiasm. On Grand Final day the AFL Cairns Juniors also awarded club president and coach, Brett Kennerley, with Life Membership - the first person from the club to receive this honour. So now a summer break for all before getting back to the grind next year for the new 2016 season. Hopefully the club’s continued success will see increases again in player numbers to take the Pyramid Power further into a very successful future.

Mulgrave Landcare and Catchment Group is a community driven environmental organisation based in Gordonvale, North Queensland since 2000. Its founding members Chris Rossi, Bruce Corcoran and Tom Watters recognized the benefits of repairing and restoring the native vegetation along the creek banks and watercourses on their properties. They have led by example in establishing shaded, stable, tree lined watercourses on their farms. The group, assisted largely by enthusiastic volunteers and funded by Government grants, continues with this legacy. Landcare plants 1,000’s of trees each year along the Mulgrave River and its feeder creeks and drains. Mulgrave Landcare works with landholders to encourage the adoption of sound environmental practices and sustainable agriculture. The last community planting was held on Hobson’s Creek in the Aloomba area. Chris, Tony and Mark Rossi prepared the site for planting by stabilizing the creek bank with rock work, removing the towering cow cane and guinea grass, and digging holes to make planting the trees easier. The 35 volunteers planted 900 trees in 90 minutes. The Rossi’s provided a BBQ and refreshments for all involved. Hobson’s Creek has been a neglected weed infested watercourse for decades. The Rossi’s aim is to replace the weeds on the creek with native vegetation, this will provide a wildlife corridor, reduce evaporation, nutrient and sediment run off, and cool the water temperature. The Rossi Bros. recognize the ecological benefits of this project. They are passionate about restoring riparian zones and wetlands and are some of the leaders in the district in adopting progressive farming practices.

Volunteers Wanted The Mulgrave Settlers Museum building houses objects used by settlers in the area then called Nelson in the late 1800s. The aboriginal, miners' and timber cutters' displays are realistically set against a 40 metre rainforest backdrop. There is a fully equipped blacksmith's workshop. Furniture and homemakers' aides in the pioneer woman's domain demonstrate the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the era, plus a few luxuries. Boats and pack horses brought supplies through Packers Camp to the goldfields, and artifacts hold many memories. Documents recording lives of early settlers are a useful resource for genealogy research. School children can engage with their local history, see some of the tools their grandparents actually used and learn of the impact on the community of the 503rd Parachute Regiment based there during World War Two. A hand-crafted Chinese Joss is in safe keeping along with memorabilia from prominent local citizens. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10AM to 2PM, however is closed from December and January (Queensland Xmas School Holidays). Are you interested in local history, enjoy meeting people and are able to spare 4 hours once a fortnight from 10am – 2pm? Mulgrave Settlers Museum in Gordonvale is urgently seeking interested volunteers to man our museum. Please contact Julie on 4056 5739 or Travis on 4056 1761.

Gordonvale Animal Education Day Animal Education Day on Saturday 19th September at Norman Park in Gordonvale was a HUGE success! Fun and happiness all round as people asked questions, kids touched different animals and were in awe of giant insects, cuddly snake, little chickens, squealing piglets and bleating lambs. There was great music, animal demonstrations and prizes! Organisations including local Vets, North Qld Animal Rescue, the RSPCA and the Queensland Police Dog Squad attended the event and answered questions from the crowd. Over 1000 people attended the event during the morning which sets it up for a bigger event next year. Demonstrations were put on by the detection dogs and amazing agility was also shown by a number of the smaller canines. The event proved to be so popular that it will now become a regular event for Gordonvale, and will be bigger and better next year! See you there! Any people who are interested are asked to contact the event coordinator, Nicky Millen.

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. This month has been one of my busiest with acreage and Gordonvale Township properties selling quickly. Many people do need to sell their existing property in order to upgrade or down size which is a very easy process providing all parties are flexible with dates in order to have a smooth settlement. It has also been a month of major lending criteria changes. If you have been pre-approved to purchase property over a month ago it would be wise to speak with your bank or broker again as the percentage of income per borrowings for investment properties has decreased dependent on your situation and post code! There are also stricter rules regarding credit history. SEPTEMBER SUDOKU SOLUTION

Gordonvale High School 50th Anniversary The 50th anniversary of Gordonvale State High School at the Sheppards Street site was celebrated with huge crowds attending last weekend. Ex students came from China, Indonesia, Western Australia, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to reminisce and renew school day friendships. Over the two days more than 600 ex students and numerous teachers registered to be part of the celebrations. Highlights included student tours of the school on the Friday with electronic white board demonstrations, classroom lessons and tours of the agriculture area proving popular. More than 34 year groups had class reunions on the Friday night in venues in Gordonvale, Edmonton and Cairns. One of the largest gatherings of more than 80 people was that of the first 3 years (1966-68) who met at Rydges in Cairns. The original teachers were very well represented by Kev Murgatroyd, Frank Rich, Alan Broughton, Dale Somer (Rich), Jennifer Whitney(Clapham), Carolyn Smythe, and Sue Morrison (Macqueen) Former principals Ken Rogers, Kate McDonald, Terry Austin, and former Deputy Principals Ken Gorton, Darryl Caplick and Bill Pickering also attended and were united in their praise of the school. Current principal, Jan Carr was heavily involved in all aspects of the celebrations. The memorabilia display and the commemorative book earned high accolades and attracted a lot of interest. The outdoor area - designed and constructed by ex student Garry Moule- incorporated 270 signature bricks which helped to finance the project. Curtis Pitt, Treasurer, member for Mulgrave and former student performed the official opening and commented on the great strengths of Gordonvale High. The field shed was renamed the Frank Rich Hall to acknowledge the 30 years 196393 that Frank spent as maths teacher and HOD. Saturday night culminated in a crowd of over 300 talking, telling stories and dancing the night away . Coordinator of the celebrations Yvonne Gordon was delighted with the crowd and praised the herculean efforts of the hardworking committee members, the staff and students of the school and the P and C. "We could not have wished for a better crowd, the weather was sensational and everything went pretty well according to plan. To see classmates and teachers reacquaint, to hear the stories of high school hi jinx being retold and to see the smiles on peoples' faces has made all of the efforts worthwhile. It was an extremely positive coming together of the Gordonvale Community and we look forward to many of the crowd returning in 2040 to open the time capsule and to celebrate the 75th anniversary " said Yvonne.

Muscles, Memory and Other Issues This may sound odd but our muscles hold a memory. This can be very useful as it allows a muscle to do its job automatically. But after an injury to a muscle the body will hold the pained area till the muscle can be released and return it to its memory of the “relaxed state”. This may take from 1 to 4 treatment sessions depending on the length of time the issue has been there and also the individual’s ability to heal as well. On another note, pain may be felt in one place but the problem may actually exist somewhere else in the body. This is called ‘referred pain’ and even though the mechanisms in the body that cause this are quite complex, Bowen and Emmett techniques can help. For example, a sore hip can be sometimes relieved by treating areas in the lower legs and feet. Just as a treatment for elbow and wrist pain may be assisted by treating the neck and shoulders. Our bodies are amazing and very good at healing themselves given the right situation. So, be kind to yourselves and have a treatment before the issue compounds. When our body is aligned and relaxed it functions much more efficiently and you will feel the difference. If you need a treatment contact Robyn at Robyn’s Bowen Therapy & Emmett Technique on 4056 3656 or 0431 303 453.

Eliminate Dengue mosquito monitoring Eliminate Dengue will be conducting some mosquito monitoring over the next few months in Gordonvale check that Wolbachia levels are remaining high as expected. In 2011, we released Aedesaegypti mosquitoes that carry Wolbachia, which is a type of bacteria that reduces the mosquitoes’ ability to transmit dengue. The mosquitoes then breed with the wild mosquitoes and pass on the bacteria to the next generations. From the last monitoring, we were pleased to see Wolbachia remaining at high levels in the local mosquito population and no local dengue transmission. We conduct periodic monitoring to check if Wolbachia is remaining at high levels and over the coming months some residents will host a mosquito trap on their property. We will service these traps weekly over the next 3-4 months. Thank you to everyone who has agreed to host a trap - we greatly appreciate your support. If you have any questions or concerns please contact 1800 811 054 or cairns@eliminatedengue.com. For further information visit eliminatedengue.com/cairns.
