Accolades for Home Town Hero Gordonvale's own rugby league star Nate Myles received hometown hero status when signs bearing his name was unveiled at the entrance to the town early in October. Nate Myles, 28, returned to Gordonvale for thee event, and was joined by friends and family for the dedication of two signs acknowledging his sporting success. "The signs are located at two entry points to Gordonvale, greeting people with the words, 'Welcome to Gordonvale, home town of NRL champion Nate Myles'," Division 1 Councillor Steve Brain said. "The town of Gordonvale takes a lot of pride in the success of its locals and Nate certainly has a lot of support around here. “It's a fitting tribute to a person who has proven that if you work hard you can achieve your dreams.” Myles played his junior football for Gordonvale’s Southern Suburbs and started his NRL career in Sydney with the Bulldogs and then the Roosters. Nate Myles joined the Gold Coast Titans in 2012. He has represented Queensland in the State of Origin series since 2006 and made his debut with the Australian Kangaroos in 2010. Mayor Bob Manning said Myles was part of a growing list of local sporting champions to achieve big things. "We have a tremendous sporting culture here in Cairns and we revel in being able to cheer on our own at the highest level," Cr Manning said. "Nate is an inspiration to local youngsters and an excellent ambassador for our region. “We congratulate him on his achievements to date and wish him well for season 2014 and beyond.” Nate is currently in England where he is part of the Australian Rugby League world cup squad.

Ride2Work Day Several staff at Gordonvale State School opted for two wheels to commute to work on National Ride2Work Day. The aim of Ride2Work Day is to prompt people into action and develop the habit of cycling to work. Research shows that the encouragement of friends, family and workmates is the best way to achieve this. In this case the encouragement came from one of the students. Year 6 Gordonvale State School student and co-ordinator of the event at the primary school, Luke Azzopardi was pleased with the staff participation numbers and hopes to organise another event before the end of the school year. A number of staff indicated they would cycle to work more often.

Cane Barracks History
CALTEX COMMUNITY CALENDAR
(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Cane Barracks are all but gone from the modern cane farm, yet they played such an integral role in the early days of the cane cutting. Just imagine the conversations that went on, new migrants coming to a foreign land and exchanging their experiences. If only walls could talk! The Cane Barracks were used to accommodate the cane cutting gangsin the early years. The barracks were especially important after the world wars when many newly landed migrants from Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia entered the industry and needed accommodation. They were sugar season homes for the many thousands of canecutters who harvested the crops before the advent of the mechanical harvester in the 1960’s and 70’s. Many cutters were itinerant, coming north for the season, from May onwards and then moving away for the wet season. Most barracks were relatively basic, but at the same time many farmers’ homes were not much better. Indeed there is evidence of farmer’s moving out of their houses to a camping life to give the cutters somewhere to live. The cane barracks building was typically a rectangular low set building, although some were up on stumps to keep the snakes out and there would be a rain water tank to the side to collect fresh water for cooking, washing and drinking. The building had a row of rooms opening onto a veranda with kitchen/dining room at the end. Most of the time the shower and toilet were outside. Corrugated iron over a wooden frame was the material of choice and sometimes the frame was bush saplings. The floor was either timber, slightly raised above the ground, or cement, ant bed or beaten earth. The windows were often wooden shutters or hopper windows that would push out and be held out with a stick to grab whatever breeze there was. All lighting was by the universal hurricane lantern. Large gangs sometimes carried a cook whose pay was taken out of the gross proceeds of the week’s cutting. Most gangs however, shared the ‘housekeeping’, and one would knock off early and have the food ready when the hungry gang returned for the evening meal. A comprehensive and entertaining account of cane barracks life called “The Cane Barracks Story” by Eugenie Navarre can be purchased at the Mulgrave Settlers Museum. Eugenie has documented and interviewed many cane farming families around the district and has included photos and their personal stories. Well worth a read!

State Landcare Awards Water Tower Update
Gordonvale State School’s landcare work both in the school and community has recently been acknowledged at the prestigious 2013 Queensland Landcare Awards held in Warwick. At the gala conference dinner Gordonvale State School was awarded the Junior Landcare Team Award for its contribution to raising awareness, knowledge and understanding of land care amongst young people. The strong partnership between Gordonvale State School and Mulgrave Landcare Catchment Group has resulted in great environmental outcomes for the community. For a number of years now, Mulgrave Landcare and Gordonvale State School have been working together to encourage both in the school community and wider community, the adoption of sound environmental practices in the Mulgrave River catchment recognising the rights and expectations of the community to use the valley’s resources for living, recreational and economic purposes. Gordonvale State School along with the winners of the other eight categories will now represent Queensland at the 2014 National Landcare Awards.
The dismantling of the Gordonvale water tower is well underway with scaffolding and tarps around it to protect everyone involved. The tower is due to be completely removed by mid November. The tower was built between 1932 and 1935 and was a large part of the history in Gordonvale including being a watchtower during world war II to warn of approaching Japanese Bombers. The tower was used to supply water to the Town of Gordonvale from 1935 to 1953 when it was decommissioned as a result of Behana Gorge becoming the primary water supply for the area. Upon removal of the tower, fragments will be made available to historical organisations and members of the public as a souvenir and some components will be retained for an interpretive historical display at the park. Removal of the water tower will cost $150,000, which will be sourced from the 2013-14 budget. Council is currently investigating further improvements to Norman Park, such as enhanced facilities and playground equipment, with work to commence this financial year.

Community Spirit Award Nominee
Kate Mathews turns 100
Selena McMurray was recently nominated for a Community Spirit Award for her services to the community and involvements in the town of Babinda, Innisfail and the Cairns region. These services include delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, fundraising for charities and organizations such as Abbey Field Aged Care, Babinda Hospital, SES, Menshed, Legacy for Lily, RSPCA and SANDS. Selena is an active member of many organizations and groups including the Babinda Chamber of Commerce, Taskforce, Harvest Festival, Abbey Field, to name a few. Through her volunteer work, Selena hopes to raise not only money but awareness of the needs of each individual charity that she helps. Selena’s wish is to have more young people getting involved in volunteering and taking more initiative in their communities; proving that even somebody with a disability like herself can rise above their own obstacles and share their time, knowledge and sense of humour with those seemingly less fortunate or in need.
On October 14th Catherine (Kate) Mathews celebrated her 100th birthday with a morning luncheon at the Gordonvale Hospital enjoying it with family, friends and staff.
At age nine (in grade 5), Selena had a Meningococcal Vaccination at school and sadly she was the 1 in 8 million that have an adverse reaction.
Kate was born in Mareeba on the 14tyh of October 1913. She and her younger brother Aubrey attended the Glen Allyn school. In her younger days she and Aubrey helped their parents, William and Rachel Carr on their dairy farm on the Tablelands.
Although left with an Autoimmune Disease, Peripheral Neuropathy, Joint Hyper-Mobility Syndrome, Chronic Pain Syndrome and Night Seizures, to name a few, she continually surprises everyone with her commitment, dedication and enthusiasm to achieve the highest of accolades. For someone with a disability, Selena rises above her own obstacles, sharing her time, knowledge and sense of humour with those less fortunate or in need. In October Selena had received phone calls and emails to say that she is a finalist in the QLD Regional Achievement and Community Awards in the Youth Leadership Category and must attend the Gala Presentation held in Toowoomba on 9th November, 2013. Selena is honoured to be chosen for such an award and seeking help from the local community to get to Toowoomba for the presentation. She met her husband Alf Mathews in Malanda where he worked in the Malanda Milk factory. They married on the 7th of October 1939 and later moved to Cairns where Alf got a job on the wharf. Alf passed away on the 3rd of July 1976 and Kate has continued to live in her own home and look after herself since, until July 29th this year when she had a fall and broke her leg. Kate still enjoyed gardening and played the piano right up until she had her fall. In her younger days Kate enjoyed playing lawn bowls, and got to travel to several parts of Australia and New Zealand with her bowls group. Kate has two nieces, Sandra Butcher and Rhonda Morris who both live in Tully. Kate also has three grand nephews, Roy and Shawn Butcher of Tully, and Neville Morris of Townsville and her grand niece Kair-Ann Martin lives in Brisbane. Kate also has four great grand nephews, Mitchell and Matthew Butcher, Aiden Morris and Michael Martin and four great grand nieces, Ella-May and Tess Butcher and Amelie Morris and Jessica Martin.
