New Shelter Strengthens DV Support Network A new women’s shelter has opened in Yarrabah, east of Cairns, as the Queensland Government continues its campaign to end domestic and family violence.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships. “In 2011 I committed $800,000 for this shelter and construction was due for completion at the end of 2012,” Mr Pitt said.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Leeanne Enoch said the five-bed shelter would provide safe, temporary accommodation and support for women and children in the Far North Queensland community. The shelter will be managed by the Yarrabah Aboriginal Corporation for Women.

"Almost three years later I’m very pleased to see that it's finally here to provide a safe place for women and children in Yarrabah to go in times of family crisis. I want to thank the Yarrabah Women’s Group for their tireless advocacy and for all that they do in our local community. Indigenous women are 35 times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be hospitalised for spousal or domestic partner assaults, that’s a horrific statistic we have to combat.”

“The Queensland Government has committed to implementing all 140 recommendations of the Not Now, Not Ever report into family and domestic violence,” Ms Enoch said. “This report underlined how important supported accommodation and support for victims of violence are, and the Yarrabah Women’s Shelter is a significant investment to this end.”

Minister Enoch said the Queensland Government’s domestic violence reforms were the most comprehensive in the state’s history. “Queensland looks forward to the day facilities like the Yarrabah Women’s Shelter are no longer needed,” Ms Enoch said.

In addition to the $868,000 construction investment, the Palaszczuk Government will provide nearly $394,000 a year for the next three years to fund support services at the facility.

“Domestic violence has no place in our community, and it is up to all of us to drive the change in attitudes and behaviour needed to eradicate it.”

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the Yarrabah shelter had been a priority since 2011 when he was previously the Minister for

The Government is seeking input on the draft Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy, which closes on 16 November.

Dial-A-Doctor is finally coming to Gordonvale

AFTER HOURS DOCTOR

Dear Gordonvalians, It has been 5 years since my son and I came to Cairns from Adelaide to start an after hours home visiting doctors service. In these years the service has grown from one car (with me as a GP and my son Ilya as a driver) to many cars, many doctors and a dedicated call centre. I know that we have provided services to many Gordonvale residents in the past, however, to receive this service you have had to drive to Cairns. From this month our doctors will see you in your homes in Gordonvale and its surrounding areas. I would like to sincerely thank all of you, grandmas and grandpas, mums and dads, babes and teenagers and ordinary accident-prone kiddies for Dialling A Doctor whenever you are ill after hours. We are very keen to provide you with our service in the future and look forward to meeting you all. Dr Raya Mayo. PS: for the exact date of our service will begin please check our website: www.dial-a-doctor.com.au/cairns or Facebook.

Testimonial Regarding: Ms. Robyn John, Bowen Therapist / Emmett Technique, Australia I am Canadian and spend the winter months in Australia with my son, Robert. I am 81 years old and have suffered from inflammation and pain in my lower extremities for quite some time. I dreamt of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2015. I arrived in Cairns in January 2015 to prepare and was having extreme difficulty with walking any distance or climbing stairs due to hip, leg and foot pain. I attended a chiropractor who advised, post CT scan, that chiropractic treatments would not improve my condition.

Gordonvale Residents Light Up and Spread Christmas Cheer for Charity Local Gordonvale residents have spared no expense in creating their very own Christmas festival of lights – and it’s all for a good cause. Jason Holmes and his friends have spent the last four months preparing and perfecting a spectacular light display at a house in Amadio Close. For the last several years Mr Holmes has created Christmas wonderlands at his home both in Cairns and Townsville raising thousands for charity. “I’ve put lights up for many years, but for the last two years I’ve been doing it for Cancer Council Queensland. My family and friends gather round and make a big thing of the switch-on which we always hold on December 1.” “We do it for Cancer Council because we believe it’s something we need to help support in this country and we all have those around us effected by Cancer in some way. This is a fantastic cause and I again hope this year we can continue to raise vital donations for those who cannot spend Christmas with their families due to getting treatment for Cancer and other related illnesses in Hospital.” The lights officially turn on December 1st at 6:30pm at Amadio Close, Gordonvale with an appearance from Santa himself on the night at 7pm. There will be a sausage sizzle with refreshments on sale throughout the night also. Their Christmas light display runs every night from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. until December 26th, 2015. Where: Amadio Close, Gordonvale When: December 1st through till 26th Time: 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Other treatment modalities, such as Bowen Therapy, were suggested. I commenced Bowen Therapy and Emmett Technique treatments with Robyn shortly thereafter and was amazed at my immediate progress. I was impressed with how quickly my pain subsided and my mobility improved. Within only two weeks of treatment I was able to climb three sets of stairs to my son’s condo with ease. I was able to climb mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) with my son as planned in February 2015. After returning to Australia I had 2 follow up treatments before I went on to climb Walsh’s Pyramid (Far North Qld Australia) and then two other mountains after my return to Canada in June 2015. In the time that I was treated by Robyn, I found her to be approachable, dependable, hardworking, conscientious, honest and courteous. She is organized, extremely competent, and has an excellent rapport with people of all ages. I feel these attributes demonstrate someone with an exceptional character. I am extremely satisfied with the results of Robyn’s treatments and her professionalism. Therefore, I highly recommend Bowen Therapy and Emmett Technique with Robyn. New Signs to Improve Safety COMMUNITY CALENDAR New signage will improve road safety for motorists turning off the Bruce Highway toward Aloomba, south of Cairns.

Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the Queensland Government was committed to providing a safe and efficient road network for the people of Far North Queensland. “Two signs will be installed before the first access to Aloomba at Leumanns Road,” Mr Pitt said. “DTMR will also extend the 80km/h speed zone on the Bruce Highway, near the Anderson Road intersection.” “We are committed to working with local communities to help provide solutions to their road safety and road infrastructure concerns. People at Aloomba have been raising safety concerns with speeding and vehicles turning off the highway, especially at the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Anderson’s Road. Transport and Main Roads staff met members of the Aloomba/Fishery Falls Progress Association at Anderson Road in June to hear their concerns. As a result of this meeting, DTMR committed to conducting a speed survey and installing signage.” Mr Pitt said the new directional and speed signs were installed on Tuesday. “The speed survey showed changing the speed zone on the highway will have little impact on motorists,” Mr Pitt said. “The directional signage will give motorists advance warning they are approaching a turn-off to Aloomba. By extending the 80km/h speed zone on the Bruce Highway and providing advanced warning of another turn-off to Aloomba, these signs should go some way towards easing the community’s safety concerns. The new signage will allow motorists to prepare for the possibility of turning vehicles ahead and will allow them to take appropriate action before the intersection.”

It has become a tradition for Gordonvale State School staff to participate in Ride2Work Day each year. Ride2School Day is also well supported by the school community. National Ride2Work Day is the largest celebration of commuter riding in Australia. Held annually in October, the day celebrates the benefits of riding to work and brings together the communities that support it. The main objective of the day is to normalise the idea of riding to work and encourage more Australians to ride to work on a regular basis. It encourages people who have never ridden to work before to give it a go, and it allows frequent riders to stay motivated and encourage their workmates to get involved. Healthy Citizen Co-ordinator at Gordonvale State School, Sandra Charlton commended the staff for their involvement in Ride2Work Day and their commitment to encouraging students to participate in Ride2School Day. The Bicycle Network events complement the school's bicycle education program implemented as a component of the Health and Physical Education Program.

The Rise and Fall of Glenboughton Estate (Part 2) (As remembered by S.L. Hawtin) (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum) Mary Jane Chamberlain was also a great cook and entertainer and befriended not only the wives of Clayton and Hills’ business associates, but made many friends in the rapidly growing township of Cairns across the inlet. Sometime between 1915 and 1919 John Hill and Mary Jane Chamberlain were married. They had one son named John Hill Junior and he was born in 1919, when John Snr was 60 years of age and Mary was 43. Operations were going well at Glenboughton Estate. The Chinese fruit and vegetable industry on the northern side of the creek was producing barge loads of produce and shipping it south. The beef and milk operation was expanding and for many of the well to do of Cairns, Glenboughton Estate was the place to be and to be seen at weekends and on holidays. Tea parties on the lawn, tennis, horse riding and revelry round the piano at night, became a regular part of life. Mary Jane Hill handled it all with ease including life with John Jnr. A decision was made to expand Glenboughton into the sugar industry, as Hambledon Sugar Mill at Edmonton was well established and was looking towards expansion. A dam was built on Hill’s creek, plans and specifications were drawn for a ‘crush to juice’ mill. A spur tramline from Green Hill to Glenboughton was built to carry the juice in tanker trolleys to the Hambledon Mill at Edmonton. The viability of the tramline was further enhanced by the delivery of firewood and tramline sleepers to the mill in the slack season. Then disaster struck in two events. Firstly in 1925, Clayton died aged 65, leaving John Hill Snr reeling without his loyal and trusted partner for guidance. Secondly, but by far the worse event happened in 1927, when a cyclone crossed the coast just north of Cairns. Glenboughton Estate was totally ruined and the homestead was wrecked beyond repair. The floods that came shortly after the cyclone were so long lasting and intense that all crops and topsoil was washed away. Faced with the effort and financial cost of rebuilding, John Hill Snr now 68 years of age, was under severe stress and never recovered from the shock. The full restoration of the farm was beyond his strength and finances. John Hill Snr died in 1929, leaving Mary and John Jnr to struggle on. Two managers were left on the plantation up until 1935, but were reduced to cutting firewood and sleepers to survive. To be continued...

Robyn’s Real Estate Read Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate.

Clean Up Greenpatch Day

It has been another busy month with many properties in the $300,000 to $400,000 price range selling within 2 weeks and one of my Goldsborough Acreage properties had 2 offers on it within 6 days of going on the internet. If you are thinking that you would like to sell before Christmas or in the New Year then I would recommend giving me a call as we are leading up to a traditionally very busy buying and selling period as people transfer to the region before school starts. I am also finding that many local buyers are looking to upgrade or downsize in the market and often need to sell their current investment or home in order to buy again due to new, stricter lending criteria. This arrangement is sometimes accepted by sellers however I have learnt that everyone needs to be flexible on date timelines, within reason, as there are many variables with two or three sales lined up. If you would like to receive a Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price or are looking for a no obligation appraisal of your biggest asset in today's market please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs Robyn Hawley-Whitton - Mobile: 0488 071 007 or Email: robynhw@cpo.com.au

November 1st saw about 115 volunteers put on their gardening gloves sunscreen hat and shoes and spent the morning as part of Clean Up Australia Day at Greenpatch south of Gordonvale. This was a positive step towards restoring Greenpatch to a more vibrant and safer recreation area and assisted in lobbying for funding to extend the maintained area. At least 80% of waste in marine environments is from the result of land-based littering, this is a concern for all Australians and Items such as plastic bags can last up to 450 years in salt water. Plastic bags, old car bodies and other metal objects were pulled from the Mulgrave River to make it a much cleaner and safer place to spend. Although it was billed as a cleanup day it was also a chance for old friends to catch up and make it a great social event.
