We Prize Our Town!

Gallery. A lot of people remarked on the energy that Raewyn Biggs created with her curatorship in this exhibition. We would also like to thank the two judges, Jeanette Laver (Cairns Regional Gallery) and John Cornwall (Garratts, DFO) who donated their professional time and experience to select our winners, for which we are extremely grateful.

Steve Brain (pictured above) our popular Councillor for Division 1 dropped in on Friday to be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the works on display in the gallery.

Of course our very own Creative classical guitarist, Steve Schwartz, provided what has become known as our “signature tune” thoroughly enjoyable music, and we all had a great night! The next exhibition will be held on October Market weekend, on the 3rd and 4th. Come and enjoy!

By Nicola Millen Gordonvale Creatives is a group of local artists who have come together, with the support of the Gordonvale Community Hub, to exhibit their art works in a way that will place Gordonvale firmly on the artistic map and give the town identity as the southern hub of the Cairns art circuit.

The 5th September Art Prize was another hugely successful effort by Gordonvale Creatives who have shown enormous diversity since first opening in June, 2014. We were extremely grateful to obtain a $500 funding grant from the Mayor’s Discretionary Fund as well as a $200 Photographic Prize donated by Mulgrave Central Mill.

This enabled us to allocate $200 prizes for each section of the Art Prize – Traditional (L. Amadio), Contemporary (L. Hayes), Sculptural or Formed (D-L. Hewlett) and Photographic (H. York). Then

there was a $100 Encouragement Award from Gordonvale Creatives (S. Jackson James) as well as a Creative Kids Drawing Competition sponsored by Popular Newsagency. But the most outstanding effort was by our own Gordonvale Traders who managed to produce over $1000 worth of small vouchers to support the People’s Choice Voucher Showbag (D-L. Hewlett)!

What a wonderful effort especially right after the Pyramid Race! The passion and dedication of each artist could be seen in the creativity and talent shown in every item on display. Traditional oil paintings and crafting, contemporary acrylics and in all sections unconventional, environmental and innovative works. Gordonvale Creatives have some very knowledgeable, experienced and hardworking curators amongst our members who rotate turns to provide us with a real professional edge to our exhibitions in our Creative Space

Paralysis Tick...

Gordonvale is shaping up for a bad tick season for pets with a rise in the amount of pets taken to the vet for the deadly paralysis tick. The tick season is generally around June to December each year, however they can be found all year round.

Also check under the armpits. Examine the chest area, all along the back, sides, belly, inguinal area, around the tail and anus and the thighs, back legs, in between the back leg toes and feet (including the under surface). If a tick is found it should be removed immediately.

Paralysis ticks are a parasite which feed on the blood of mammals. Their natural hosts are native wildlife such as bandicoots. Occasionally a paralysis tick will attach to a pet or other domestic animal. During feeding the paralysis tick releases a toxin called holocylotoxin which can cause a life threatening paralysis. Paralysis ticks may be differentiated from other common ticks (such as the brown dog tick and cattle tick) by its legs, which are clustered up near its head, never more than half way back along its body. The front and back legs are dark brown, then middle two legs are a lighter colour.

Your veterinarian can show you the best way to remove a tick. When removing a tick, avoid disturbing the body of the tick (don’t squeeze the body). Aim to remove the tick by its head at the point of insertion into the pets skin. A useful aid is a tick remover - a fork like device that slides either side of the tick without touching the body of the tick and removes the tick easily. If you find a tick, remove it immediately and take your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

Remember to also continue to search for more ticks. Some dogs can be infested with many ticks at one time.

Ticks are normally coloured light grey, white or bluish grey (The male tick is a darker brown and because it doesn’t feed stays small: only 2-4 mm in size).

Female ticks may also have brown tones and often have stripes along their body or other patterns, which can vary widely in different geographic areas Search pets thoroughly at least once a day, use the fingertips to feel through the animal’s coat. Ticks or tick craters can be felt as lumps on the skin surface.

Energy Exhibition

Most ticks are found forward of the front legs, especially on the face, neck and ears. However, remember to search the entire pet. Start at your pet’s nose and slowly examine the face, forehead and ears (outer and inner surface of the ear flap/pinna). Also search the eyes and lips and the skin/fur around the eyes and lips. Carefully examine all skin folds as well. Remove any collars and search the neck area thoroughly including the skin folds of the neck. Continue the search, searching the shoulder area and then down the shoulders to the front legs.

Remember to check between each toe and under surface of the front feet.

Friday the 5th of September saw the opening of the Creative Generation and ENERGY Exhibition at The Tanks.

This event showcases student artwork from schools all across the Far Northern region, with 17 schools entering over 150 students in the 2014 exhibition.

Gordonvale was strongly represented with nine students submitting works to be displayed for the duration of the event.

Year 12 students Ayeesha, Jade, Jennifer, Benjamin, Je-Anne, Breanna and Mikayla, along with Chelsea and Lucy from year 11 will have their amazing artworks on display in ENERGY right through to the 5th of October. Entry is free, so head over to Collins Avenue in Edge Hill to see the amazing talent from both our school and the students of Far North Queensland.

50th Anniversary The Missing Link Memorabilia The results of a trial programme, Helping Children Achieve (HCA) conducted in the UK, were published this year. The aim of the trial was to investigate possible links between improved literacy and social behaviour.

In Australia, researchers from the University of South Australia and Flinders University conducted a study in 2011 titled, Behaviour at School Study (BaSS). The UK study measured changes in student behaviour after parents participated in one of three different trial parenting programmes.

The Australian study surveyed SA teachers about their behaviour management of students.

Interestingly, the results from these studies suggest that improving literacy and engaging students in their learning may lead to improved student behaviour both at home and at school. Also it is interesting that the UK study focussed on the parenting of the student, compared to the Australian study focussing on the teaching of the student.

Gordonvale State School Fete The Gordonvale State School fete will be held on Friday October 17th at the school in Shepherd Street Gordonvale from 5pm until 9pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for the school and our community to celebrate all the wonderful things that the students and teachers do at Gordonvale State School.

This is one of the major fundraising events for the Gordonvale State School. As it is a big exercise the Parents and Citizens Association are asking people to help make the fete a success.

The students and teachers are working on performances to entertain the crowd on the night, There will be a cooking competition, writing competition and the annual art show for students to demonstrate their creative skills. The tuckshop will be selling food and drinks throughout the night and all donations of cakes and slices will be gratefully accepted.

There will also be a plant stall, cake stall, trash and treasure stall and hoop bottle game. Donations are also being accepted for these events. Spread the word to all family and friends and support the Gordonvale State School on the 17th of October.

Parties No Cosy Affair in the 1940's Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum.

Holding a tea party is a bit of a novelty these days, but in the 1940’s, 50’s and early 60’s they were a staple of Gordonvale society.

They gave the women of the town the chance to socialize, share recipes and craft ideas. Wyn Gregory a long time local resident and says they were the highlight of the social calendar. Here is an account from Wyn Gregory.

It was definitely a different era back then. Girls were expected to resign from their jobs once they married and that left them free to be household help. Tea parties became the primary source of entertainment for housewives. There were many expectations placed on the tea party hostess and they were frowned upon if they were not adhered to.

For instance, if the hostess wasn’t dressed in her Sunday best and the food she’d prepared wasn’t up to scratch, she’d be gossiped about. For days before, the hostess would have thoroughly cleaned the house so everything was sparkling for the occasion.

There was also that little bit of ‘trying to out-do the last hostess’ going on as well. The hostess usually prepared a tray of dainty sandwiches, garnished with thinly sliced lettuce and there would be either pikelets or scones with jam and cream and often a luscious big cream sponge cake, chocolate cake, or a lemon meringue pie.

Tea cosies played a vital role in keeping the leaf tea hot at the tea parties, as the ladies tended to sit around the table and gossip and the tea would have quickly gone cold. The Mulgrave Historical Society and the Mulgrave Settlers Museum in Gordonvale, held their inaugural free entry Tea Cosy Competition in August this year.

The idea of the competition was to raise the public awareness of the Mulgrave Settlers Museum as a tourist destination and consequently the town of Gordonvale as a place to visit. Close to 100 tea cosies were entered and they included knitted, crocheted or any medium categories.

The Museum received great positive comments in their visitor’s book such as ‘excellent display’, ‘fantastic talent’ and ‘will be back next year’. The Museum plans to hold another Tea Competition next August.

On Sunday 19 October Bendigo Bank Smithfield branch is hosting the inaugural Bendigo Bank Run for the Reef Community Challenge on the Cairns Esplanade. The 5km Fun Run is one of three Fun Runs held in the tropical north aiming to raise funds for the James Cook University Great Barrier Reef Research Fund, as well as the local schools within the Cairns region.

Each ride has a leader and there will be routes to suit all ages and abilities up to 20km. Helmets must be worn and children under 12 years of age must ride with a parent/carer. All routes are on paths or very quiet streets.

Participants are encouraged to not only sign up online but to become Reef Champions through Everyday Hero with great prizes for the highest fundraiser.

100 Years of Red Cross...

On Saturday 12th July a High Tea was held at Jane and Michael Greenwood's Residence Behana Gorge in honour of our Red Cross Member Cheryl Campbell for receiving the OAM Award.

Red Cross Members organised the High Tea and family and friends participated and all had a great chat .Cheryl was presented with a framed print of Walsh's Pyramid.

To celebrate the 100 Years of Red Cross, the Cairns String Orchestra with the pleasure of Soloists Cathy Knight and Robbie Johnson and the Gordonvale State High School Band and Choir gave a magnificent Concert at the R.S.L. Hall Gordonvale on Saturday 2nd August. Music was taken from the war years and there was also a singalong. All present thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Red Cross AGM was held on Wednesday 6th August at the R.S.L. Hall Gordonvale with 28 present consisting of Red Cross Members and invited guests. Mr Harald Falge (Harald's House) was Guest Speaker and he captivated all present.

Jan Anderson received a Bar for her 40 Years Service and Linda Jones received a Bar for 10 Years service to the Red Cross.

Elected Executive Committee consists of :Maurene Carne (President), Jan Anderson (Vice President), Sandra Downing (Secretary) and Lena Benedetti (Treasurer).

Everyone enjoyed a light lunch after the meeting.
