The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair The Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair is over for another year and once again an amazing success thanks to the dedication of a small number of volunteers who made it such a great event. With the first of 136 runners to cross the line in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes and 28 seconds and the last runner at 3 hours 41 minutes and 44 seconds it made for a big day for the organisers. The eventual winner was Jimmy Hilton, a Mossman Local who crossed the line over 10 minutes ahead of second placed Steven Francis in a time of 1 hour 30 minutes and 33 seconds and third overall was Lee Kirby in a time of 1 hour 35 minutes and 7 seconds. Jimmy Hilton has made it two in a row after winning the event in 2014 in a slightly quicker time. In the women’s event first to cross the line in a time of 1 hour 43 minutes and 5 seconds was Deahne Turnbull in 11th place overall, followed by Anna Mitchell in 19th position and Anita Gori the third woman across the line in a time of 1 hour 52 minutes and 36 seconds. Earlier in the day the 5 kilometre fundraising event was held raising a total of $2244.25 for 13 different charities.

The main beneficiary of this event was MND Australia who received $839.50 and Gordonvale State School who received almost $470.00. Other charities including CDH Australia, Out There Kowanyama, Queensland Cancer Council and Soldier On also received some funds. As well as the running the day was packed with other events including demonstrations by community organisations in Norman Park. As usual the town was a buzz from early in the morning with the local market stalls, food stalls and rides for the kids jammed into the Park. This year the event was able to expand by using the area on Mill Street in front of the Mulgrave Mill for more rides and entertainment. The entertainment continued into the evening at local hotels and side show alley in the park. The night was capped off with a fireworks display. A big thank you to all the sponsors, runners, members of the community who turned out to support the event and of course most importantly the volunteers and organisers. Organisers are already planning to make next years signature event even bigger.

Gordonvale shines in Far North New Format Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt presented three community service awards to outstanding locals as part of the Pyramid and Country Fair on August 8.

Mr Pitt said Gordonvale’s reputation as a vibrant heritage town would continue for years to come thanks to the efforts of passionate locals. “The character of any town is defined by the people in it and I was humbled to have an opportunity to recognise some of Gordonvale’s best earlier this month,” Mr Pitt said. “Local parent volunteer Sue Helmke’s work in the classroom, tuckshop, P&C, Mulgrave Landcare, devising Gordonvale State High’s Excelsior Program, bike education program and even the local SES has been devoted and tireless. “A community-minded volunteer and avid cyclist who has participated in the Cardiac Challenge and was a committee member for the Ride for Isabel. In 2013 Sue received the Virginia Chadwick Outstanding Environmental Leader Award for improving the sustainability of the environment in our local area and she recently secured over $5,400 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to purchase new sports equipment for Gordonvale School. “The world could certainly use a few more Sue Helmkes and it was an honour to recognise her contribution to our town. It was a pleasure to also pay tribute to the Gordonvale Hospital Auxiliary group for their local work over the last 25 years and I’m looking forward to their quarter-century milestone on September 4. “Earlier this year I had the pleasure of donating funds to the group that were used to purchase a portable fridge, to allow the auxiliary to continue their food stall fundraising at events including the Great Pyramid Race and Country Fair, the Gordonvale Races, the Craft Fair and Christmas Carols by Candlelight. More recently they helped raise over $21,600 for the Ravenshoe Fire Appeal. “The Gordonvale Lions Club were deservedly awarded for their community service at almost every event in town - including the Great Pyramid Race and County Fair, functions for Canegrowers and the Fire Service, the Gordonvale races, the Gordonvale Primary School fete, many local sporting functions, the Ride for Isabel, Cairns District Rugby League finals and Carols by Candlelight here in Norman Park. They also run a monthly meat raffle at the markets. “Over the last financial year the Gordonvale Lions Club donated $14,400 to various community groups including the Girl Guides, Scouts, Pyramid Residential Centre and St Johns in Gordonvale, as well as other national projects and individual families in need. “As a member of the Edmonton Lions Club myself, I understand the work these volunteers do to raise funds and support their local community to make it a better place for everyone.” Separately to the Community Service Awards, Mr Pitt also took the opportunity to recognise Gordonvale SES volunteer Salvatore (Sam) Cardillo. His four decades of dedicated service to the organisation earned him a 40-year clasp, presented by the Emergency Services Minister. “Sam has been with the SES since its inception in 1975 and his dedication to the Gordonvale community where he has lived and worked all his life is second to none,” Mr Pitt said. “The Great Pyramid Race wouldn’t be the same without Sam’s organisational skills. For as long as most people can remember, he’s been a familiar face dispensing water to runners taking on the mountain. For the Gordonvale SES he has been a pioneer, a great source of advice and above all, someone we've all counted on to be there.” To see a full list of Queensland Government awards and to nominate a great Gordonvale identity, visit: www.qld.gov.au/about/events-awards-honours/awards/

However, as with any small business, we are always looking at ways to improve what we do, as well as finding ways to become more economical so that the Mulgrave News can continue bringing upto-date stories and events to your attention. Therefore, we have decided to try another way to get the Mulgrave News to you sooner! From this month, the newsletters will not be delivered to each individual house but left at most shops around the town for easy collection. Goldsborough Valley Historical Information Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum On August 8th 1879, two men arrived in Cairns with a few penny weight of alluvial gold found in the Mulgrave River, which led to the Goldsborough gold rush. Government records show that the Mulgrave Gold Fields, from 1879 to 1886 produced 3984 ounces of gold. The main gold field was in the approximate area bordering Tooheys Creek and Butchers creek. Four batteries were known to exist in the Mulgrave Goldfield, the largest being a ten-head battery at the Walter Hodgson mine. Notable mines included such names as ‘The Chance’, ‘General Roberts’, ‘Elsie’, Órient’, ‘Mowbray’, ‘Lucky King’ and ‘Alice Loeven’. This mining area was mapped as the ‘Upper Mulgrave Camp’. The Walter Hodgson mine is mapped (as of 1914) in an eastern direction from the Orient at a location between Butchers and the Mulgrave River, while a 1893 map locates the mine as roughly two miles in a south-east direction from the Upper Mulgrave Camp and situated on Butchers Creek. The Lower Camp was mapped at the junction of Tooheys Creek and the Mulgrave River. The maps dated 1893 and 1914 refer to the latter location as Goldsborough and later Fanning Town named after Major Fanning, a warden at the time. Original owners of Goldsborough were recorded as Mr and Mrs James Allen, who set up the property as a cattle station during the time when the Mulgrave Goldfield was actively worked. An eight room homestead was built and was well furnished. Two notable features of the homestead were an excellent library and a very fine pipe organ, which was brought over some very rough road conditions from Cairns. Mrs Allen sold the holding to her brother Mr Gill and after a few years, he then sold it to the Scanlan family in 1918. In 1923, the property was purchased by Mr Apps, who then sold it to the Trevor family. Goldsborough Station extended form The Fisheries and upstream to Butchers Creek on the western side of the Mulgrave River. The Scanlan family at that time became extensively established as horse breeders and such stock was in great demand in the Cairns and nearby areas. Near the old homestead, was a private cemetery where Mr Allen and two of his children were buried. In the 1920’s, Mr. H.K.N.MacDonnell of Cairns, instigated further exploration and mining in the Goldsborough area, mainly the Walter Hodgson mine. The picnic area at Goldsborough Valley is now known as Carney’s flats, it is named after Mr Carney, who took up his property while the mining was till flourishing and became an early horse breeder. He was found dead in his hut in the early 1920’s. The police were notified and a policeman tended to his burial. The grave was marked with a large stone carried from the nearby river bed and is situated under a mango tree. In August 1972, members of the Cairns Historical Society added more stones to border the grave.

Welcome to this month's Editorial of all things Real Estate. Based on the current August Edition of the Cairns Watch which is produced by Herron Todd White, Cairns continues to sit in the Rising Market section of the Property Clock. August was an exceptionally busy month for me so these are positive signs for our property market. The median sale price for houses in Cairns is steady at $394,200. Listed properties are taking less time to sell, down from an average of 70 days to 62 days, showing a stronger demand for real estate. The rental vacancy rates for houses is 2.4% and 2.8% for units, indicating a tight supply and thus bringing more first home owners into the market. Due to the success of last month's competition, if you are thinking of selling in the next 3 months you can go in the draw to win $500 off you marketing package. One entry will be drawn on 30th September, 2015 at 5:00pm. Please email or phone through your name, address and phone number to enter and mention this advertisement. One happy Gordonvale client won the $500 towards his marketing package last month. If you would like a free Market Appraisal or a Pre Listing Checklist on how to maximise your selling price, please give me a call or email for an honest and confidential chat about your real estate needs Robyn Hawley-Whitton - Mob: 0488 071 007 or Email: robynhw@cpo.com.au

Mulgrave Landcare works in partnership with land holders to revegetate and repair fragmented riparian zones along the Mulgrave River and its catchment feeder creeks. A riverbank of natural vegetation is more stable and assists in the reduction of riverbank erosion and land sediment and nutrient run off. The native vegetation also provides a covered and safe corridor for the movement of wildlife. The improved visual amenity of a revegetated area is also a worthwhile aim. As well as our usual on farm works as part of our current project supported by Mulgrave Landcare, through funding from the Australian Government, we have started revegetating the Hemmings Creek council reserve, which runs parallel to the Bruce highway between Pyramid Estate, and the residential area opposite the old Gordonvale saw mill. Mulgrave Landcare members, with assistance from the Cairns Regional Council, local residents and Conservation Volunteers Australia, have planted 1100 trees and shrubs along the banks of the drain in the first stage of this project which will eventually see it

transformed into a natural vegetated creek line. Local residents are already enjoying the changing landscape and the positive feedback is very encouraging. A mulching activity and more plantings are planned for this area supported by our regional natural resource management body, Terrain NRM. Contact us if you would like to keep updated on our Hemming’s Creek project, come along to the next community tree planting on September 13 near Aloomba, join a monthly meeting, or discuss the possibility of planting trees along a water course on your property.
