Fight #3

Main Screen Hamburger menu unobtrusive and already known pattern. Not bad solution in this case. But‌ where this icon came from? Is it share or what? đ&#x;˜ł Clear CTA, no distractions. Nice. After all, the last thing I would like in a focus app is to distract me! And what’s that? Is that a logo? Or sth I can click on‌? đ&#x;¤ˇ

So clean and simple

vs.

On Android, the main screen has even less elements here than on iOS and in this case meaning of each element is perfectly obvious.

More menu, also known as kebab menu. Such menus should not be used as a primary method for navigation within an app. Therefore I suppose there is nothing interesting hidden đ&#x;˜ś

Navigation Yup! That’s some nice menu we have here: 5 elements only and overall simplicity. “Xâ€? for closing, following iOS pattern, in top left corner. Easy user identification by displaying profile picture đ&#x;‘? Menu list design in Human Interface spirit - nice and clean.

vs.

All application sections and gathered in typical (also boring) kebab menu. Although it’s Material Design pattern plain white manu somehow does not fit here and makes the app lose its magic đ&#x;Ś„ On Android there is no user account? So no need for an Android user to keep her data across devices, huh? #weeklyUXfight #MobeeDick

Daily share On iOS Tide makes use of every extra feature available on iOS, so thoughtful â?¤ Widget with quick access to focus sounds, when expanded contains the quote of a day with photo - Tide put some effort into designing it, nice!

‌

Anything here‌?

vs.

‌

Anything‌?

Tide‌? Also Force Touch interaction have been designed.

Reporting Oh, so this is where the magic button at the bottom of the main screen takes us - daily stats! ( Consistent with vibe of the app simple and minimalistic. Going deeper (another icon of rather vague meaning‌) we find long term statistics. IMHO, only the calendar with daily focus comparison can have a value, the rest seems kind of useless.

vs.

On Android Focus Today section is available from the kebab menu. So this makes it seem to be secondary feature. But is it really so negligible? Navigation (back button) designed according to Material Design guidelines đ&#x;‘? Use of card seems ungrounded, as there is no additional action available for this element - it’s untappable. #weeklyUXfight #MobeeDick

Conclusions Despite some slight inconsistencies with Apple guidelines (e.g. iconography), the way Tide applies design patterns is perfectly unobtrusive and makes navigating the app completely natural. Also, keeping up with what technology offers (that is using such features as Force Touch and widgets) is something that should be appreciated. Nice work, Tide!

>

Calm, clean vibe of the app makes it quite impossible to dislike it ❤

>

Tide on Android seems a bit like unwanted child - at first sight it is exactly the same as on iOS, but after a while we can see, that it’s definitely missing designer’s attention. Some features are designed poorly, others do not work at all or are simply unavailable for Android users. That’s a shame, ‘cause the app itself has huge potential to be loved. I hope that it’s a matter of time for Android version to catch up with iOS level. For now, it is 10 months behind (released in Dec 2016) and it cannot go unnoticed.

And the winner is…

Take care!
