Editor’s Note I’m pleased to present you with

the

first issue of

Mocca Magazine. Many years ago, when I received the news that

CLIKQUE/Clik

magazine

thought about creating

was

ceasing

publication,

I

a magazine such as this. I let that

Idea wither away. About 5 months ago , I received a present from a near and dear friend. It was

a gift certificate for a

psychic reading. I went along with it because the friend feels so strongly about it. During that reading, one of the things that the psychic told me was that I don’t take enough chances and that things are out there just waiting for me, if I step out on faith. A week after that reading, I started putting the plans in motion for this magazine. And here we are today with

the very first issue. I have to

thank my friend Rick and that psychic (Ms. Dorthea) for setting me on this path. I’m having the time of my life. So I hope that you enjoy this magazine as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you. I have really big plans for Mocca Magazine and can’t wait to start showing them to you with each and every issue. Clik Magazine was a great publication and I can only hope to match the level of excellence that it exemplified. With that being said, here is the first issue of Mocca Magazine. I hope you truly enjoy it. And please feel free to send

Gone Too Soon Donna Summer LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known by the stage name Donna Summer, was a singer and songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s. A five -time Grammy Award winner, Summer was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the Billboard chart, and she also charted four number one singles in the United States within a 13month period. Born into a devoutly Christian middle class African American family in Boston, Massachusetts, Donna Summer first became involved with singing through the church choir before joining a number of bands influenced by the Motown Sound. Influenced by the counter-culture of the 1960s, she became the front singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to New York City. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair, she spent several years living in West Germany, where she married Helmut Sommer, whose surname she adopted as her stage name. Returning to the United States, Summer co-wrote the song "Love to Love You Baby" with Pete Bellotte; music producer Giorgio Moroder convinced her to sing it herself, and it was released to mass commercial success in 1975, particularly on the disco scene.

Gone Too Soon Donna Summer Over the following years, Summer followed this success with a string of other disco hits, such as "I Feel Love", "MacArthur Park", "Hot Stuff" and "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)". Becoming known as the "Queen of Disco", she regularly appeared at the Studio 54 club in New York City, while her music gained a particularly large following within the gay community. Summer delivered the album She Works Hard for the Money and Polygram released it on its Mercury imprint in 1983. The title song became a major hit, reaching number three on the U.S. Hot 100, as well as No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart. It also garnered another Grammy nomination. The album itself was certified gold. In 1987, Summer returned with the album All Systems Go, which did not sell well and was her second consecutive album not to achieve gold status. It featured the single "Dinner with Gershwin," (written by Brenda Russell), which was only a minor U.S. hit, though it peaked at No. 13 in the UK. The album Another Place and Time, was released in Europe in March 1989 on Warner Bros. Records, which had been Summer's label in Europe since 1982. The single "This Time I Know It's for Real" , Atlantic Records signed Summer in the U.S. and pick up the album for a North American release soon after. The single peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 in the U.S. and became her 12th gold single. It was also Summer's final Top 40 hit on the American pop charts. During her career, she received 5 Grammy awards and 6 American Music Awards. Struggling with depression, she subsequently became a born-again Christian. Diagnosed with lung cancer, Summer died on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, Florida. She was posthumously described as the "undisputed queen of the Seventies disco boom" who reached the status of "one of the world's leading female singers In December 2012, it was announced that Donna Summer would be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013

Gone Too Soon Vesta Williams Mary Vesta Williams (December 1, 1957 – September 22, 2011) was a recording artist and songwriter, who performed across genres such as pop, jazz, adult contemporary and R&B. Originally credited as Vesta Williams, she was sometimes simply billed as Vesta beginning in the 1990s. She was known for her four-octave vocal range. Although Williams never had any albums certified gold nor any Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, she scored six Top 10 hits on the Billboard R&B chart from the mid 1980s to the early 1990s. Williams was known for the hits "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", "Sweet Sweet Love", "Special", and her 1989 hit and signature song, "Congratulations" Born in Coshocton, Ohio, United States. Former Fifth Dimension member Ron Townson put Williams in his band Wild Honey. Following that stint, Williams found work as a backup singer, working with artists such as Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Sting, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker and Gordon Lightfoot. Williams sang on the original version of Joe Sample's "The Survivor", and met producer David Crawford while working with his group Klique. After doing session work, she landed a recording contract with A&M Records and her debut album, Vesta, was released in 1986. The album featured her first Top 10 R&B hit "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", which became her only UK hit and performed modestly on the US R&B charts. Her 1988 release, Vesta 4 U, produced the Top 10 R&B hits "Sweet Sweet Love", "4 U", and "Congratulations", with the latter peaking at #55 on the Hot 100 chart and #5 on the R&B chart. The album would become her most successful, and her only album to appear on the US Billboard 200, peaking at #131. In 1991, Williams released her third album entitled Special, with the title track as a single. "Special" became her highest charting song on the R&B chart at #2, but sales of the album were less than that of Vesta 4 U. Her next album, 1993's Everything-N-More, produced only a minor R&B hit, "Always".

FreeFall Returns The Interview with Lamont Pierré You read this correctly. The smash hit webseries “FREEFALL” will be returning with new episodes In the month on March. I had the chance to interview the shows creator Lamont Pierre. Mocca: Who Is Lamont Pierré? Lamont Pierré is a writer, director, cinematographer, and film editor. Mocca: How did you get into filmmaking? LP: I knew while I was attending college that I wanted to make films. And I’ve always been strong at writing. I picked the college that I attended (Florida State University) based on wanting to get into their film school or becoming an english major, to become a strong writer. I‘ve just always had an interest in words and images. Mocca: What was your first production? LP: It was a film that started off as a short film entitled “Damaged”. And I did it while I was in college. It was the first screenplay that I wrote. It was supposed to be a short film but morphed into a feature film. We tackled to subject of HIV. At the time, the whole thing (HIV) was getting a lot of press, so I wrote this film about these characters dealing with the subject of HIV. That was my first project. And unfortunately, I don’t have any copies of it any more. It was horrible, trust me. Mocca: Looking back on that project, being in the place you are right now, how do you feel about that project? LP: At the time I felt very strongly about what I was doing. That project was a chance for me to really decide if being a filmmaker was what I wanted to be. And I felt like it would either make or break my interest in filmmaking. And it only exacerbated it, in a good way. I feel good about it.

26

27

FREEFALL Returns Mocca: Tell me a little bit about your last feature film “Talking With the Taxman about Poetry”? LP: That was actually my first official feature film. It was shot in Los Angeles in 2011. And we’ve just recently put it out on the film festival circuit. We just premiered in Los Angeles at the Pan African Film Festival. The film will be presented at the Outfest Film Festival 2013 in Los Angeles. It stars Kareem Ferguson(from the D.L. Chronicles), Steph Jones(recording artist), Vanessa Simmons(Run’s House) and Saleisha Stowers (from America’s Next Top Model) Mocca: How did you come about casting Steph Jones, Vanessa Simmons and Saleisha Stowers. LP: Steph Jones was the second person that I cast. After I got my lead character, I knew what I wanted ‘lookwise’ for the second lead role. I knew I wanted someone with interesting hair. I really wanted a unique look and with a very unique kind of swag. I knew that Steph had done some (gay) press and he recognized that he has a LBGT audience that he doesn’t shy away from. He’s been very supportive. I felt like ‘this guy might be open to a project like mine’ because the film has gay subtext in the storyline. I reached out to his management. He was definitely open to doing it once he read the script. I brought him in and auditioned him and the rest is history. He was all in. From there, he passed my script on to Vanessa Simmons, unbeknownst to me. When he called and told me about it, I was a little annoyed because I don’t like my scripts being passed around especially when we’re going into production. He informed me that he was at a party with her and she read it that night, and called him back that same night to say that she wanted to audition for the film. And I was hyped! We brought her in and she auditioned and we cast her as the fourth lead character. Then he brought me Saleisha Stowers. He told me she was very interested. So we got her in and got her secured. So Steph is responsible for those connections. LP: I’m very, very proud of my work, my older work. And I feel like I know myself as a writer and as a director, I know what my voice is. I did a previous web series entitled “My Brother’s Keeper”. I worked on that series for about 7 years, off and on. We released three seasons of it. I wasn’t very satisfied with the returns we received from that show. I felt a little discouraged because it was some of my best writing and my best directing. The look of it was very strong.

28

Mocca: So let’s get into your latest work, FreeFall. Why don’t you tell me a little bit about the series. LP: The premise for the show is these three young professional black men who find themselves as roommates, in Atlanta. And it’s about their lives inside and outside of their beds, As we venture into what we are calling the first official season, we’re widening up the show in a lot of aspects. The first 4 episodes of the preseason take place in the apartment. It is about them bed-hopping and the problems that those actions cause. We bring up concepts like sexual position, masculinity vs. femininity, promiscuity…All those things we bring up. That was the original idea for the show. Bringing it back to the title ‘FreeFall’, I remember when I was developing the idea, I felt like that was what a lot of people do in the lifestyle. It seems very ’FreeFall’ for the younger kids, because I’m older. They kinda jump into situations without thinking of the consequences. I just decided to use that as the title and make that connection with the characters. As we venture into the first season, we will actually be taking the characters in a darker direction, and you follow them into these dark and unfortunate situations and then watch them fight to stay afloat. That right there really sparked my enthusiasm, so creatively, I get to stretch, and I’m looking forward to the new direction of the series. It will still have components of the original, we’ll just be widening the perspective. Mocca: Are you maintaining the same cast as the preseason? LP: I still have the same cast. Everyone is returning and everyone is ready to get back on set. So the main cast will not change. But we’re introducing some new smaller roles. Mocca: The series FreeFall has a different feel than a lot of your earlier work. What do you believe brought about that difference in the way it felt. When I was reviewing some of your other work, it felt like you were headed in a certain direction. With this series it seems like you’ve changed course and now you’re moving in a different direction. What brought about that change to go this new route?

29

FREEFALL Returns And the conversations that we were trying to bring about I felt were important, ( especially being from a younger perspective). I wasn’t satisfied with our numbers. And I felt like they should have been stronger. So I wanted to create something and take all the pressure off of myself. I went to my team and told them I had this idea for a new project. I wanna go off and do it. It’s totally experimental, no frills. I wanted to see if I took a different approach, what would the response be. And I developed FreeFall throwing away all of my previous processes when I comes to filming. FreeFall was the first time I collaborated with another writer. It was a chance for me to go deeper into a subject that I’ve always touch on in my work. Which is gay characters and gay life. I always touched on it but I never went too deep, at least not as explicitly as we’ve went with FreeFall, which is really not that explicit. I wanted to do something different, just to prove to myself what the problem was. I developed FreeFall with a friend of mine. And we put it out there, not knowing what the response was going to be. We shot it very minimally. And a lot of my actors are new actors and don’t have a lot of experience in front of the camera. And we just did it. And got the response that we got and it totally answered a question I needed to answer for myself. Mocca: And what was the answer that you received? LP: I walked into that one. Well, I felt that my previous web series wasn’t as completely accepted by the audience that I was trying to chase. As much as I felt it was a very important project and what we producing was very relevant, it just wasn’t impacting the way I felt it should. But FreeFall began impacting way better than I could have thought possible. So it just told me that what I feel is the most important thing and also that what people need from me is my perspective, but not in the way I’m used to delivering it. Me personally as an artist, I have a very niche perspective, and a very niche point of view to my work. I’m not pop. And I feel like FreeFall was more pop where Lamont Pierre is usually more niche. I’m more of an Indie, underground R-n-B, if I can use a music analogy. And I concluded that there is nothing wrong with that. I know who I am as an artist. I know the type of work that I want to put out into the world. So that will never change. And that also doesn’t mean that I can’t do something that impacts more directly and that’s a little more relevant to today’s audience and where society is right now. A bigger audience responded to ‘FreeFall’ than any of my previous projects. And I’m fine with that.

30

31

FreeFall Returns Mocca: Well, do you believe that this response that you’re receiving from ‘FreeFall’ might have something to do with the fact that your previous series “My Brother’s Keeper” was started 7 years ago spanning to the present. And the You-tube webisode genre was before its infancy at that point. You grew your series with it as it was developing. Now, with the introduction of ‘FreeFall’, the genre is now well established and there is an established viewership that is seeking out this type of content. LP: Absolutely. And now the series ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ is on an extended hiatus, because we’re trying to figure out how to fit it into the conventions of the web series genre or what it has come to be. That is the challenge. Our show has always been one thing, we’ve changed some aspects, but we have always tried to stay true to how things were from the beginning. That’s not what people have shown that they want from a web series, at this time. So, with that project, we’re trying to figure out how we can continue that project but also how we can make it a hit web series as well. That project is shot in 4 different cities, It takes a lot of resources, it has a humungous cast of actors. It’s actually the biggest project that I’ve ever done. But we are trying to figure out how we can find a place for it, where it is still impactful. With ‘FreeFall’, I aimed directly for a certain audience and that audience responded back. We didn’t have that experience with the previous series. Mocca: Tell me about the 3 main characters of ‘FreeFall’? LP: Well, the show is built around the character Xavier (played by Shamon Glasby) who was a main character in ‘My Brother’s Keeper’. FreeFall is a spinoff of the My Brother’s Keeper series following Xavier. For the people following that character all of these years, you can see his evolution from being the down low guy, creeping out of back doors, moving at night, into being in a same sex relationship, and then eventually moving out of the confines of the world he grew up in with his family and his friends, finding Xavier (Shamon Glasby) his identity moving to Atlanta. So I want to continue his story. So we started with him having a one night stand which evolves into a roommate situation. And we’re following his journey trying to define himself and becoming more comfortable in his sexuality. We are also learning about Trent and Cameron.

32

33

FreeFall Returns Trent (played by Langston John Blaze) could be called the stereotypical promiscuous guy. But we are trying to develop him to have more layers than just the guy that sleeps around. Cameron (played by Jody Fulton) is more of the straight-laced guy, he’s pretty reasonable but he does have his issues which he tend to keep to himself. As we continue the series, we’ll learn more about these guys and how their sexuality goes hand-in hand with the rest of their lives and the point we’re striving to make is that you don’t always have to lead with your sexuality. It is a part of you but it is not the sum of who you are. My personal opinion is that it is great when young people discover their comfort in

Trent (Langston John Blaze)

their sexuality, but then they often leave themselves at that point. They don’t explore the other parts of themselves, the parts that their sexuality enhances. And that’s what we’re trying to do with the show. Yes, these characters are gay, but that’s not their entire life. They have other things going on, which everybody does, whether you’re straight or gay. Sexuality is not the defining trait. Mocca: In the fourth episode of the Preseason, We are introduced to Chad ( played by Jovonni Colon). From the Youtube comments of that episode people seem to be really drawn to that character. Chad is a very different character than the other characters.

Cameron (Jody Fulton)

LP: He wasn’t supposed to be that character. He is a friend of Jody Fulton. The day of that scene, we had some scheduling conflicts and he was able to fill in for the actor originally cast for that role. He ended up working perfectly for the scene. We will definitely continue working with him and keep the Chad character as part of the show. That character struck a chord with the audience. It seems like everyone loved that ‘reading session’ within that scene as well.

34

FreeFall Returns Mocca: To me, the Chad character brought in the ‘fresh air’ into the room. It seemed to me like a lot of the earlier character exchanges were very deep, meaningful conversations. There wasn’t a level of friendliness and lightheartedness between the characters and then in walks Chad and he just busted that wide open. With is something that you see very often within the gay community. In every group there is that friend who has this bubbly personality that often can lighten up a room or a situation. And even though he really wasn’t part of the reading session, it seemed like he softened that atmosphere of the room for that session to take place. LP: With being a writer it is important to find balance with in your work. I believe that that is something that I struggled with in some of my previous work, finding a way to balance the Chad (Jovonni Colon) heavy topics and the light conversation. We definitely saw that the Chad character brought in a new energy, and we will keep that character because that change in energy is needed. Mocca: With the fourth episode, you also launched a fundraiser to continue the production of the series. Is that fundraiser still active? LP: When the fundraiser was opened it was only open for about 8 days. It wasn’t really there for a substantial amount of time. It really was just another experiment. I’ve tried doing crowd funding in the past and it’s never been successful as a fundraiser. Most of my projects have been self-funded. I wanted to see if the audience that had taken a liking to the show would financially support it. While I think the audience is truly enjoying the show, I think it is a challenge for any web series to tap into their viewership and have them support it on a financial level. It was kinda successful. It produced better results that I’d seen in the past with other projects. But it didn’t meet the goal that was set. So I had to decide if I wanted to find a way to keep the show going or to just let it end. But I didn’t want to lose the fan-base that had been built by FreeFall. So I decided that even if we don’t release episodes as often as we’d like, I’m going to find a way to keep the show going. One of the biggest things that came from the show is a great amount of exposure. And with exposure comes opportunities. So that is a good reason to keep the show going even if we have to continue to self-fund the series.

35

FreeFall Returns Mocca: What are your future plans for FreeFall? LP: We’re gearing up to start filming the first three episodes of the first full season. So the viewers will get new episodes as often as we can put them out, hopefully, every month. I’m relocating to New York, but I will continue to film FreeFall in Atlanta. At this point we’re looking to achieve a certain level of production quality. So if someone wants to potentially license the show for television, we will have that option. Maybe eventually we will move to releasing the series on DVD or placing episodes on Itunes. Our goal, at this point, is to just continue to build the series. Mocca: When do you project that the first of these new episodes will be available for your fans to view. LP: We’re looking to have the first new episode out by the middle of March. As soon as we finish this first round of filming in Atlanta, we’ll get them out as quickly as possible. Mocca: What other projects would you like to like your audience to be aware of? LP: Other that FreeFall, the feature film “Talking With the Taxman About Poetry” is the currently released work. It is touring on the Festival circuit. We’re also in production on two other feature films. We’re planning to

The Night Reign Fell to New Orleans

The Execution of Nigel Harris

shoot both of them this year. One of them “The Execution of Nigel Harris” will be shot in Georgia. The second film “The Night Reign Fell to New Orleans” will be filmed in New Orleans. You will find teasers for those projects on Youtube. I have another web series that I’m a producer on entitled “The Therapist”. That will be released in a few weeks.

That series is starting its second season. Mocca: What contact information would you like to give to your fans so that can reach out to you? LP: To see my work, you can find it at www.lamontpierre.com Facebook is also Lamont Pierre. Twitter is @lamontPierre. Search me on You-tube as well. Emails can be sent to info@lamontpierre.com. Freefall has its own twitter account @freefallseries. Emails for the FreeFall series can be sent to freefalltvseries@gmail.com.

New Year, New Relationship by Maurice Anton When it comes to New Year’s two of the most common resolutions made by both men and women are the goals to get the ideal body or lover. In today’s society attaining the ideal body isn’t as mythical as it once seemed, being that it’s nearly impossible to watch TV or browse the internet without seeing an advertisement for exercise or weight loss, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear cut guide to finding love; especially when it concerns gay men and women. For many LGBTQ men and women searching for love, the only guides given are intuition and the process of trial and error, often ending in heartbreak. As we face the New Year however, one must open up to new possibilities presented and be willing to take a chance at finding love. There may not be a manual on the average gay person finding love, but there are many tips that can point one in the right direction. Before setting out to find the perfect mate one should ask themselves, “why do I want to be in a relationship?” Too often men and women seek a relationship for all the wrong reasons. Convenience, being lonely, or believing that a relationship will lead to happiness, should never be an excuse for seeking a relationship. When seeking a relationship one should have the willingness to share their love with another, but if you aren’t happy alone then chances are you won’t be happy in a relationship. Upon deciding that you are truly ready for a relationship then the best step one can take to find one is to stop looking. Often enough the problem for some individuals isn’t finding love, it’s maintaining it. Issues arise and couples find that they tend to have more dislikes than likes about their partner, usually stemming from a lack of getting to know one another.

42

43

As magical as first impressions may be it takes a lot more than one date to know if you are compatible with a person. Take your time; not only to get to know your potential partner but also to allow him/her the chance to learn about you. Even if you two are not meant to be in a relationship, doesn’t mean that you can’t have a great friendship. One of the most fascinating things about love is that every person’s situation is different from everyone else’s. You may never find the manual on how to find love, but you can prepare yourself for it and how to recognize it. The New Year presents new opportunities that are just waiting to be met; now you just have to be willing to get out into the world and conquer them. If the past has taught you anything, it’s that looking for a relationship is the easiest way not to find one. Consider it self-sabotage as you are probably creating a screening system that few could probably pass. Eliminate the criteria and open yourself to new possibilities. Dating is all about stepping out of your comfort zone, and trying something different is the best way to see what it is that you have been missing. Although it may be hard for some, also refrain from using dating sites and apps frequently and get out into the word. Introducing yourself to new people and organizing, or attending, group gatherings are good ways of meeting people casually without the caption “I’m looking for a relationship” hanging over your head. If love is meant to happen then it will take its course but one important thing to remember is not to rush into anything.

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: I am a 30 year old that is with my ex boyfriends best friend. Let me explain. My ex boyfriend and I have been apart for 3 years. Recently, I and his best friend reunited through Facebook. We went to dinner about a month ago and since then we have been having sex about twice a week. He says that he has always been attracted to me. He has told me that he could see himself with me and that he really likes me but is unsure of how to approach this with his friend. We both agree that neither one of us are ready for the emotional and mental stress that would accompany us if we come out publicly with our relationship. The crazy thing is, back in our college days he expressed his interest in me before his friend did but I turned him down. Now that I know more about him on a different level, we have a lot of things in common. I am very attracted to his ambition, the fact that he is a great father to his child (he's a single father and his child lives with him), and he's a responsible adult. I could see myself with him, but I am so scared to proceed with this relationship because I don’t want anyone to get hurt. Aunt Pearl, are we wrong for "going there"? Should we go for it or stop it now while no one knows about this but us? And how should we go about exposing our relationship? In desperate need of some guidance! Signed Totally Confused Dear Totally Confused I don’t think you’re confused at all. I think you want to be confused about this situation because your confusion justifies it for you. You know that you’re dead wrong for even thinking about being with your ex-boyfriend’s ‘best friend’. Most men are very protective of their partners even past partners. While your ’ex’ might not care about your side of this, You’re still his ’ex’ and this line shouldn’t have never been crossed by you or the friend. There are many other people out there. Go out and find one of them and both of you take this secret to the grave! This Letter and many others are post at Moccamag.com. Please feel free to post your comments. If you have a question for Aunt Pearl, please send your letter to askauntpearl@moccamag.com

nPEP and PREP It’s Saturday morning. You wake up from a night on the town. The drinks were flowing. You have a slight hangover. You remember enjoying yourself. But you can’t remember how you got home. But thankfully, you made it home safely. But you realize that you’re not the only one in your bed. Who is the person? You’re naked and they’re naked as well. But you don’t even remember meeting this person. How did they end up here in your bed naked? Now you realize that you and this stranger had sex. The questions really startup. Did we use protection? You check the trash for a condom or a condom wrapper. You don’t find any. You do see the open bottle of lube on your nightstand. Now you get scared. You wake up sleeping beauty and try to piece together the evening. He informs you that the two of you met in the parking lot after leaving the club. You talked a little and decided to end the evening at your place. Things got hot and heavy and the two of you had sex. There was no mention of condoms so he thought you was ok with going raw. He informs you that he is negative. You ask him does he always go bareback? He tells you not all the time but he doesn’t like using condoms. What do you do now? You have the option of nPEP(Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).nPEP is a 28 day regime of antiviral HIV medications to reduce the risk of contracting HIV from an unprotected sexual encounter or exposure from intravenous drug usage. nPEP is recommended for exposures no greater than 72 hours old. It is a radical treatment but has been proven to drastically reduce the chances of contracting HIV. Rather than just waiting 6 months to a year to know if you’ve become infected. You now have an option to try and circumvent HIV. Those striving to remain HIV- now have another tool at their disposal. For people who want to combat the risk of HIV proactively there is also PreExposure Prophylaxis. PRe-Exposure Prophylaxis(PREP) is a daily regime of HIV medication taken to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. Because the only 100% safe form of protection is abstinence, PREP is an option for someone sexually active. While it is not risk-proof It has been shown to reduce sexual risk down to 97%. It is recommended to that a person on a PREP regime should use other forms of safe sex practices to further reduce the risk of contracting HIV. For more information, go to www.cdc.gov/hiv/prep or http://www.aids.gov/hivaids-basics/prevention/reduce-your-risk/post-exposure-prophylaxis. 58

Black Men and Raw Sex It is amazing to me that we are at the beginning of 2013, and that HIV infection rates in many major cities are on the rise. In major metropolitan areas like Atlanta and Washington, DC, HIV rates are rising but disproportionately larger numbers of African American men are being diagnosed. What is the reason for the significantly higher number within the African-American community. Is this increase due to AfricanAmerican men engaging in more sex than other races. No, this can’t be the reason. The reason for this increase has to directly be contributed to lower safe sex practices. But why would this be. People at much earlier ages are being exposed to safer sex information and resources than at any other time in history. I feel that there are 3 main things affecting the drastic increase in the infection rate. Many people see HIV as unavoidable. Many people have the experience of having friends and family members that are HIV positive. With such large numbers being report like 1 in every 4 African-American gay men in major cities being HIV positive Many feel that HIV will catch up with them someday HIV not being seen as the death sentence that it once was in the not so distant past. With the advances in HIV treatment,, many feel that being HIV positive in the same as having High blood pressure or being Diabetic. It is now seen as a manageable condition. Drug therapies have reduced the level of side effect the medication would have you experience in the past. Also, instead of taking a cocktail of multiple 60

61

30 years ago, at the very beginning of the HIV epidemic, with no real treatment of the disease, almost anyone diagnosed with the disease was certain to die in a relatively short period of time from complications to that disease. As the years have pasted cocktails of a multitude of pills (with side effects that were sometimes worse that the actual disease) have been reduced to a one pill a day regimen with very few side effects and with supplements that help make you healthier, many HIV positive people actual are healthier and in better shape than their HIV negative counterparts. HIV has evolved from being a disease synonymous with cancer to being a manageable condition like hypertension or high cholesterol. I believe that this association has changed many peoples view of the disease from one of prevention to a level of acceptance that it is something manageable. Many young and older people see no need in fighting to prevent it and now see it just another step along the road of life. The commercialization of bareback sex At the beginning of the HIV epidemic, there was a massive push for condom use. You were bombarded with posters, banners and ads advocating safe sex. Every time you went out for a night on the town someone was handing you safe sex information packets with condoms . In recent years while the ads are still out there to be seen and people do still pass out the condom packs, there has been an ever increasing presence of people going bareback. When quizzed many more people admit to going bareback with people they have just recently met. Many more profiles have shown up on social sites like adam4adam and men4now that are not just open to bareback sex but are exclusively seeking it. And these same profiles state that the profile owner is HIV negative. To me, there is a serious disconnect there. How can you state to be HIV negative but actively engage in bareback sex? In the past there was an assumption that if someone asked to engage in bareback sex with you, many made the assumption that the person had to be HIV negative to be making that request. But the opposite has come to be my understanding. If someone asks you to engage in bareback sex and no discussion of HIV status has been made, the requester is assuming that the other party is already HIV positive.

62

But simply asking someone their status should not be good enough if you‘re trying to maintain a HIV negative status. The assumption should always be that the person might be positive and you act accordingly. Most would never let a random stranger control other aspects of their life, so why would you have someone control your sexual health. Maybe it’s rather like playing Russian roulette. But people feel that they’re not playing with a 357 Magnum but rather a water gun. If you get shot, no real harm is done. People not seeing HIV as Avoidable or not worth the effort to avoid. As little as 10 years ago, HIV was the thing to avoid. Everything around you was telling you to do whatever you had to do to steer clear of the disease. Recently may feel that it is unavoidable and that its not worth the fight to maintain an HIV negative status. In this day and age, many more people are living with HIV, many at much younger ages. It’s amazing to see how many more people under the age of 21 have been diagnosed with HIV. Many who have not been diagnosed., assume that they are HIV positive but by not being tested they can claim to be HIV negative. I was recently speaking with a young man (age 22) who informed me that friends told him he should quit worrying about safe sex because he was much more likely to meet someone how was HIV positive are who didn’t know their hiv status than to meet someone who was hiv negative. This got me to

thinking. How true was this statement? Do people feel that their fighting a losing battle with HIV and have just given up. While this person has told me that he has not abandoned safe sex all together, he is more open to bareback sex because of that thought process. With some young people feeling that they are hopeless against acquiring HIV, many see safe sex as an option and not a requirement. There has to be a renewed charge to give everyone the information and hope necessary to protect themselves. With so many influences out there negatively affecting people’s decisions to practice safe sex, that has to be countered. This is one fight we can’t give up on. Mocca Magazine will strive to provide continuous information and support to make sure people are fully informed about HIV prevention and maintenance. Everyone should be given the tools necessary to make these life-altering decisions.

Aquarean Bottoms They are slow starters; they idealize love and encompass it with tenderness. Once aroused though, anything goes! Aquarean bottoms are extremely imaginative and like trying new things. There is nothing in any sex manual that they will not try. They believe that anything that increases their partners’ pleasure is worthwhile. Their favorite sexual position is standing up, preferably in the water.

Love & Feelings — Pisces are the most romantic and loving sign of the zodiac, and approach love emotionally, seeking a relationship based on security, comfort and nurturing. They often link love and procreation. They admire people who are receptive, industrious, conscientious, economical, domestic, sociable, sympathetic and protective. A Pisces best friend might introduce them to their type. Sexual Behaviors & Performance Sexually, Pisces, tend to be versatile. Top Pisces They take the lead in sex and get impatient if they don’t get a swift response. They are very indifferent to sexual restrictions, both moral and legal. They prefer partners with tremendous sexual craving. They enjoy sex in a chair and they like to be submissive having their sex partner do all the work. Top Pisces become addicts to anything that will give pleasure and release. Bottom Pisces They always make the right moves; say the right things and create the right ambiance. They are sexually liberated and enjoy a wide range of eroticism. If their partner’s fantasies coincide with theirs, the action can be really hot! They seldom say no to anything their sexual partners suggest. Their favorite places are in a waterbed or a hot tub.
