Editor’s Note Hello Mocca Readers! Its November already. Time to reflect on all the things that you are thankful for. Throughout the year, It is very easy to get caught up in all of the issues that we face day to day. It is very important to take the time to reflect on those things that we are thankful for. While our health or finances might not be best, they could always be in a worse state. While that lover of yours might be getting on your nerves, at least he is there to give you comfort when you need it. If you’re not currently in a relationship, you can take solace in the fact that you don’t have to deal with the craziness that some people are dealing with in their relationships. The thing to remember is that there is always a silver lining that you can look to in times of trouble. Take this opportunity and find those silver linings in your life and relish them. Troubles are probably right around the corner. As the scripture says “weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning”. You might just be weeping tomorrow, so you might as well enjoy as much joy as you possibly can today. This has been an amazing year so far for myself and Mocca Magazine. Even though, there have been times of weeping, there have also been times of great joy. And I’m sure more good and bad times are ahead. But I choose to focus on the positive rather than the negative. And it is a choice. We all can choose what we focus our attention on. Those choices help to shape our outlook on life. What are you choosing to focus on? Are those choices helping to enrich your life? Take this opportunity to redirect your focus. Your happiness is depending on it. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Mocca Magazine and I also hope that it can help you to focus on the happiness that is in your life. Please feel free to send me any comments or suggestions to comments@moccamag.com Rodney L. Berry Publisher 5

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark

The SGL Cruise was started by Mark and Keith. A couple from Atlanta that has dedicated themselves to bringing their friends together in fellowship and love. One of those get-togethers morphed itself into the SGL Cruise (Same Gender Loving). The first SGL Cruise set sail on Sept 27, 2014. Back in 2012, they decide to create an excursion were (Same Gender Loving) men and women could come together and enjoy themselves. That was the birth of the SGL Cruise which completed its inaugural voyage this past fall. I had the opportunity to speak with Mark and Keith about the adventures they experience in pulling off such a task. Mocca: Wher e did the idea for the SGL Cruise or iginate. Mark: The SGL Cr uise actually star ted off as just the idea of a fr iend ’s getaway. Keith and I had set-up other retreats in the past, where we got together with friends and just experienced some bonding time. We started working on the idea of gathering a few friends together to take a cruise. As we continued to plan this excursion, we posted a message about it on Facebook. Once people began to see that post, more and more people informed us that they would like to attend. As those numbers increased, we realized that this could no longer be just a friend’s getaway. It was morphing into a full-scale event. We quickly realized that we would need to expand the vision of this cruise. That is how the SGL Cruise came about. 15

Mocca Magazine

www.moccamag.com

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark Mocca: So tell me a little bit about how you changed that vision.

Keith: As the or iginal idea began to grow, we contacted Niesha Dupree about the idea of having her provide some entertainment for the people attending. We did inform her that this was just a small gathering (ie; very limited funds). Niesha was very quick to state that she was down to be a part of it. This was developing around the time of the big issue in the Dominican Republic. The situation that occurred there had people very leery of trusting excursion promoters. But when people saw that Niesha was now going to be a part of this excursion, that relieved some of their fears and the interest in the cruise really began to grow. Mocca: Why did you pick the Car nival Glor y as the event’s cruise ship? Mark: It actually wasn’t the ship that we were interested in (even though we have no complaints about it). It was more the destinations where the ship would port that appealed to us. We originally placed a survey on Facebook, where we asked people about some of the places they were interested in cruising to. A majority of the responses were against going to the Bahamas. Many more people were interested in the western Caribbean destinations. So the Carnival Glory with its ports in Cozumel, Belize, Roatan and Grand Cayman were perfect. Our vision was to accentuate the ships offering with events that our guests would specifically enjoy. We felt that with the combination of our private events and all of the ship’s public events, people could have a great experience. Mocca: You did set-up a great number of activities for your attendees. What was your thought process in creating them? www.moccamag.com

16

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark Keith: I’ve been in the entertainment business for over 25 years. I’ve performed at the Apollo Theater as well as all over Europe with artists like Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, KC and Jojo and many others. I have a clear understanding of the entertainment business. Being that I had attended previous cruises, I understood the premise of many of the activities that the ship would offer. Many of the ships activities are designed for families and for straight couples. Because most of those activities were not designed to target the SGL community, we felt our attendees would enjoy activities designed with them in mind. While we can appreciate and enjoy what the ship would have to offer, it was important for us to provide some options that were directly for the enjoyment of SGL Cruise attendees. With the inclusion our Talent Show, Fashion Show and the spades tournament along with entertainers like Niesha Dupree, Sophia McIntosh, Sister Quintella and DJ Ron Pullman, we created a more diversified experience for our travelers.

Mocca: How successful do you feel the first SGL Cruise was? Keith: Based on the feedback we have received during and after the cruise, we felt we were highly successful. We found that people were able to really enjoy themselves. People expressed their appreciation for many specific aspects of the cruise and well as for the cruise in its entirety. Elements like the motivational speaker (Darryl! L.C. Moch) and the karaoke show were seen as opportunities that people had not really been able to enjoy in other settings, because these activities were directed targeting them rather than targeting a generic group of people. 17

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark Keith cont.: Before we were able to unpack from this cruise, people were already requesting information on how to sign-up for the next cruise. When we began this venture, it was not to make a profit or to receive accolades, we just wanted to bring the members of our community together to enjoy themselves and show love for one another. So many people are battling so many different things in their family and personal lives. We wanted to create an experience where they could let go of all of those things, for a little while, and enjoy the lives and experiences that they do have. Mark: It was extremely successful for us. We have attended other cruises with other groups. When we decided to create this cruise, we had no idea it would grow into something so big the very first time. We had over 110 attendees. Most of these people had never met us before. But they trusted us with their time and their money. Receiving all of the positive comments let us know we had met their expectations.

Mocca: What was your perception of the attendees of the SGL Cruise? Keith: Everyone didn’t attend every event that we hosted and that was expected. We understood that people would attend the activities that they had an interest in. Our overall objective was for people to come together and get to know one another. We wanted the group to feel closer and more connected after this experience. The talent show was designed so that the participants were the cruisers. We also made a conscious decision to have a welcome event at the host hotel. This was so that, even before people boarded the ship, the attendees would have already met some of the other SGL cruisers. On a boat with over 2000 people, we didn’t want our guests to feel alone. By making those connections before the cruise began, they were able to cultivate those new friendships on the ship. www.moccamag.com

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark Mocca: Tell me about the 2015 SGL Cr uise? Mark: The 2015 SGL Cr uise will take place September 26th -Octoberr 4th, 2015 we will be cruising on the Carnival Conquest, departing from Ft. Lauderdale with the port cities of St Kitts, St Maarten, San Juan, PR and Grand Turks. With this next cruise, we want to find a way to give back to our community. We’re thinking about expanding the talent show so that all of the tips will be donated to a charity. With the first cruise, we achieved the goal of receiving people’s attention. We now want to use that attention to help support our community. For the 2015 cruise, we decided to pick AID Atlanta as our sponsored charity. During the first cruise, the largest number of attendees were from the Atlanta Metro area. We intend to make that it a tradition to support a charity from the area with the most attendees. Mocca: The fir st cr uise was a 7-day cruise. Do you feel that people will find it an issue that the next one will be for 8 days? Mark: I can see how some people might find issue with that amount of time at sea. But to continue to evolve the cruise, we decided on destinations that people would enjoy experiencing. Unfortunately to reach those destinations, we would have to be at sea a little longer. I think the positives will outweigh the negatives. Mocca: Did you r eceive any feedback fr om the ladies that attended about more events directly to entertain them? In the future do you plan on adding more elements geared toward the female cruisers?

19

Mocca Magazine

www.moccamag.com

SGL Cruise 2014 A Conversation with Keith And Mark Keith: When we designed the events of the cruise we made sure that they were designed so that the ladies in attendance as well as the men, would enjoy them and feel comfortable. We didn’t want to separate things out because we have enough divisiveness between the lesbian and gay community. We welcome any feedback on how we can improve the experience for our guests. But we don’t want to morph into two separate events. We did look for more female entertainment and hosts. And with this, we strive to have as inclusive of an experience as possible. We actually planned to have a female entertainer just us on the first cruise, but that person had some personal situations that prevented her from attending. We will always look for quality entertainers that can enhance the experience for our guests. Mocca: Will you be wor king with Salty Br eeze again this year for the cruise?

Keith: Yes we ar e pr oud to be again wor king with Salty Br eeze Cr uise Planners. Enrico and Karen Saltarelli did an excellent job this past year in making sure that every guest went thru the process as smoothly and ad effortlessly as possible. They went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure everyone enjoyed their cruising experience. Age Ain’t Nuthin But A Number You’re at a party with some friends, laughing and having a great time. As your eyes scan across the room, you see a guy that catches your attention. When you look at him a second time, you see there is a noticeable age difference between yourself and this new stranger. You automatically write him off as either too young or too old for you. But the real question is ‘Why do you feel this way”? Have you had some bad experiences with someone in this same scenario? Have you heard horror stories from some of your friends that went down this path?

Why is it that we dismiss a potential mate based on their age? Every one of us has met a very cool guy that is not in our age range that we see as a great catch. This guy was very charming, attractive, intelligent, and a very fun guy. Why would we look at that person and say that they’re a great catch for someone else? Does the fact that there is an age difference negate them from your dating pool? While I know that there are things that you should see a red flags when looking for a dating partner, but age might need to be removed from that list. There are so many great guys out there and limiting your options because of someone’s age might be an unneeded obstacle. As an older man myself, I’ve fallen into the bad habit of looking at younger guys as being undateable. They are ok to play around with but not to look at in a serious dating manner. Younger guys are often seen as immature, promiscuous, party animals, someone good for a fling but never to settle down with. While there are definitely examples of this to be found, it is an unfortunate and invalid stereotype placed on many younger men because of their age. I have personally met plenty of younger guys that are very goaloriented, non-sexual, moderate clubbers. Many younger guys are just making their way thru life trying to obtain the same goals many older guys have wanted in their lives as well. You also have to remember all of the immature, irresponsible, undateable guys that are within our dating range. With this many people taken out of the equation, we should be trying to find quality candidates to fill this void. 35

Mocca Magazine

www.moccamag.com

www.moccamag.com

Mocca Magazine

36

Age Ain’t Nuthin But A Number The other stereotype placed on many younger guys is if they are seeking the company of someone older than themselves, they’re looking for a sugar daddy or a sponsor. It is commonly commented upon that young guys could only be interested in older guys for the material things that the older guy can supply to the younger man’s life. We’ve all seen the blatant examples of this where a guy is only receiving attention from his younger suitor when the rent/car note is due or when they want some expensive purchase from the mall. While this could be the case, many younger guys are actually better off financially that some of these older guys. There are many guys who are very independent and they are only looking for companionship. If you get to know them, you would find them to be very suitable candidates for dating. Again I’m not asking you to change the way you date. Just be open to adjustments. I’m sure that if you are single and limiting yourself to guys within your certain age range, you have ran across many guys that meet your criteria that are in no way dateable. Open up your options. You never know who you might find. On the flip side of the coin are the younger guys. They may also find issue with dating a guy that is above their target dating range. Some of the reasons for this include: older guys are boring, older guys won’t take you serious, older guys can’t keep up with you in bed. Older guys can be very possessive. All of these complaints can also be attributed to certain younger guys as well. So these traits can be universal. And just like with the examples given for the older guys, if you open your eyes, you’ll seen many examples of older guys that are the opposite of those complaints. You will find very lively older guys with high sex drives who will see a younger guys as more than just a momentary fling. Just like the older guys, many younger guys have ran into many guys within their dating range that they would never consider dating. It is a great idea for younger guys to open up their dating pool as well. You just might find that older guy that will surprise you with want he brings to the table. I think all men should be aware of the red flags when dating anyone but also give the person the opportunity to show that they’re a different person that who you assume they might be. We have all been surprised by someone we’ve met. We expected a completely different person than who we were presented with. This can be a very pleasant surprise and we should be completely open to these type of experiences. Don’t just a book by its cover and always remember that Age Ain’t Nuthin But A Number. 37

The New Housewives of Atlanta

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” Season 7 premieres Nov. 9th at 8 p.m. EDT on Bravo. The new season of the real Housewives premieres November 9 th and there they will begin with a little shake-up in the cast. All of the ladies from season 6 will be returning for the new season. But the first change to occur was with Porsha Williams. During the taping of the reunion special, she physically assaulted Kenya Moore. Kenya filed a police report and charges were brought against Porsha. She has never apologized from assaulting Kenya. For the new season, she has been demoted from official ‘housewife’ to a ‘friend’. I’m not certain that the fight had anything to do with her being demoted. Many have complained that her character was boring and that she should be replaced on the show. But whatever the reason is, the final result is that she is no longer an official cast member. But Porsha has many more irons in the fire. She released her single ‘Flatline” She is also a correspondant on the news magazine show “Dish Nation” Filling the void left by Porsha’s downgrade is status, we have two new arrivals. Claudia Jordan and Demetria McKinney.

Claudia Jordan Claudia Jordan is the first new cast member of the popular franchise since the introduction of Kenya Moore and Porsha Williams (then Stewart). She will be introduced to the show as a longtime friend of Kenya Moore. With the help of Kenya she will begin to interact with all of the other castmates and the tensions will surely rise. Known for her quick wit and painfully truthful reads, we should get some great one-liners that will set Twitter on fire. From the promo reel released by Bravo, we should expect to see Claudia in confrontations with Nene, Porsha, and Demetria. Claudia is a model and current radio personality on the Ricky Smiley Morning Show. She was also a primary cast member of the “Tiny Tonight” Show on VH1. She has in the past been a model on “The Price Is Right” and she was the #1 suitcase model on “Deal or No Deal”. Demetria McKinney While she was not given an official spot as a cast member. She will be joining the rest of the ladies and we’ll see what trouble she can brew up. Demetria has a long list of acting accomplishments. Most will know here for her role as Janine Payne on Tyler Perry’s highly successful series ‘House Of Payne’ She appeared in the Tyler Perry stage plays “Meet the Browns”, “What’s Done In The Dark”, “Why Did I Get Married”, and “Madea’s Family Christmas”. Additional stage work included “The Mountaintop’, ‘Church Girl”, the musical “I Dream” (where she portrayed Coretta Scott King and “Dreamgirls” (where she performed alongside Jennifer Holliday). Demetria has appeared in the films “Daddy’s Little Girls”, “Let the Church Say Amen”, “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do”, as well as the TV shows “Necessary Roughness”, “Let’s Stay Together” and “Drop Dead Divas”. Demetria is currently a primary cast member on “The Rickey Smiley Show” on TVOne and a reoccurring character on the show “Devious Maids” on Lifetime. Demetria is currently in a relationship with the highly successful producer Roger Bobb. Here relationship will come into question on the show as it it is revealed that another cast member might also be linked to Mr. Bobb. In recent interviews, she has also stated the cold reception she has received from Nene Leaks. (Sidenote: I’m beginning to wonder if there is anyone that Nene cares for. She seems to have static with just about everybody in the cast) We will see if after the end of this first season, if she will officially be given a peach to hold. 51

Apple released the iPhone 6 Plus, their first large screen phone. Samsung released the latest iteration of its most successful large screen device, the Galaxy Note 4. Both of these devices were recently released. And both are outselling other smartphones of this size. But which one is best for you? That is a very good question. That question can only to be answered by you. Both are excellent devices, made at the highest level of quality. Both are pretty expensive devices ranging on contract between $299-$499. Here are some the basics to help you with that decision.

While both of these devices are large the iPhone 6 Plus happens to be the longer of the two. The Note 4 is wider and thicker than the iPhone. The IPhone 6 Plus measures in at 158mm height x 78mm weight x 7.1mm thick. The Note 4 measures in at 154mm x 79mm x 8.5mm. As far as weight is concerned. Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: I recently moved to a new city. Before the move, I met a really great guy. We had the chance to go out one time before I moved. We promised to keep in touch and he has been true to his word. He comes to visit me twice a month. But we have only seen each other in my city. When I offered to come back and visit him, he discourages the idea. He states we’ll have more privacy at my place because he does not live alone. That works for me because I try to work as much as I can to make some extra money. This has been going on for the last nine months. A few months ago I was invited to a very close female friend’s wedding. I had decided not to attend and I had informed her of this, but I wished her well. As the wedding approached, I started to feel bad about not attending. So I requested a few days off from work and decided to surprise her and attend. I informed my boyfriend of my plans. I told my boyfriend that I was going be in town that weekend and he informed me that he would be out of town that weekend. I wrote it off as bad timing and moved on. The day of the wedding when I arrived at the church, I saw my boyfriend in a tux. I assumed he was part of the bridal party. I quickly realized that he was actually the groom. He was the one getting married to my good friend. I verified this with another guest. I then quickly left the church. The next time I talked to him, I ended things with him but I didn’t tell him that I was at his wedding. I now feel guilty because my good friend is married to a man that was sleeping with me up until a week before their wedding. Should I inform my friend of the exploits of her new husband? Dear Friend’s Husband’s Lover: What a tangled web we weave? First off, I say leave her alone and let her enjoy here new marriage. If this man continues cheating she will eventually find out. And she will be able to deal with that at that point. As for your ex, I would try to have a conversation with him and let him know that you know his new wife and has played too close to home. Let him know how close you are to telling his wife and that he should focus his efforts on making her happy. It will not be a good thing if he has to explain to his wife and both of their families how he is loving a double life. That will probably not stop him from straying but hopefully he will be more careful.

Ask Aunt Pearl Dear Aunt Pearl: I think I have a simple question. My man is a very good many in so many ways but he is addicted to hook-up apps like Grindr and Jack’d. He has profiles on both of them and well as websites on his computer. He has told me that he has no plans of ever meeting any of the guys he chats with. He says he just enjoys looking at the profiles and playing with his sexuality thru sites. I know my man does enjoy porn and can be very adventurous in bed. I try to keep up with him to keep him satisfied. I also know that most men are not faithful so I don’t have expectations of him never cheating on me. I do not find virtual sex as a form of cheating. It is when that moves into the physical that I find issue. I have no evidence to prove that he is cheating. Should I be concerned about his use of those apps/ sites? Dear Cybersexing Lover

While I agree with you that cybersex is not a true form of cheating, I don’t fault those that do believe it to be. Only you and your partner can decide what works and what doesn’t work in your relationship. I also know the temptations that are opened up into your relationship by others having access to your man in this sexual nature. There is always the possibility that he might run into the situation that he can’t resist. But the same can happen on the street, in the gym or even in the grocery store. You don’t need an app or a website to cheat. It really don’t matter what he is doing. What matters is his commitment to your relationship. If he is determined not to cheat (whatever ‘cheating’ means in your relationship), he won’t do it. If he is not committed to that, then he will sooner or later cheat. If you decide that the apps and websites are ok, he should know your boundaries, so that everything is clear and preset. You might have to walk this path alone. There is a very good chance your friends will not feel the same way that you do. So, they might be able to give you the best advice.

If you have a question or situation that you would like Aunt Pearl to share some of her knowledge with you, send your letter to askauntpearl@moccamag.com or you can submit the letter from the comments page at www.moccamag.com.
