Stacie Bloomfield of Gingiber: From Artist to Artrepreneur
Creative entrepreneur Stacie Bloomfield is determined to bust the starving artist myth. “There are so many ways forward as an artist,” she says, and she has the journey to prove it. From her humble beginnings creating art at her dining room table to leading a team of 24 today, Stacie’s story is an inspiring look at how persistence and building relationships with other creatives can “lead to opportunities that make for a full career,” as she puts it.
“You Don’t Turn Down This Opportunity”
Stacie launched her product-based art licensing business, Gingiber, “out of necessity,” she says with a laugh. At the time, she was working full time as a barista while her husband was in graduate school. She had a graphic arts degree but wasn’t sure how to turn that into a career. “I started an Etsy shop,” she said, and tried selling a variety of things, but soon realized that her art sold best. She began building a steady business on Etsy as an illustrator, focusing on nursery- and kid-friendly designs.
In 2011, just a few years after Stacie launched Gingiber, Etsy reached out to Stacie to tell her they wanted to include her shop in their Black Friday feature. “I didn’t tell them that my second baby was due at the exact same time!” she admits. “My husband said, ‘Maybe you shouldn’t do [the Black Friday feature],’ but you just don’t turn down this kind of opportunity,” Stacie says emphatically, and she went ahead with the feature in what would turn
Stacie and her family
out to be a watershed moment for Gingiber. “I sold more that week than I had in the previous three years combined,” according to Stacie, and that opportunity solidified her vision for a creative career. She quit her day job and threw everything into Gingiber.
Finding New Paths Forward
About six years into her business, Stacie says, “Etsy started to change, and I knew it wasn’t going to be my primary source of income anymore.” She began looking at new ways to leverage her art, including through licensing opportunities. Licensing her art for fabric seemed like a natural fit, but “I had never designed a repeating pattern before,” she says. Undeterred, she put together a portfolio and sent it to the design team at Moda. “They called me up, and...they didn’t like my proposed collection,” she laughs. “But they looked at my art and my website and said that they wanted to work with me because there was so much there to work with!”
Gingiber’s first collection with Moda Fabrics, Thicket, debuted in 2016. Since then, Moda has released more than 20 Gingiber collections – Bee Garden is the twenty-second. Not only does Moda partner with Stacie to produce beautiful fabrics for the Gingiber brand, but the company also carries many of Gingiber’s finished products, including stickers, notecards, tea towels, and more. “Moda has been a real champion” of the Gingiber brand and products, Stacie says.
Nurturing a Creative Community
Recognizing a need for communitybuilding and mentorship in the creative community, Stacie launched the first of her extensive list of “artrepreneur” classes in 2020. Since then, more than 140,000 artists have participated in her courses. “I’m passionate about helping artists in their journey,” she gushes, drawing on her own experiences navigating the world of licensing and product placement to help other creatives learn how to leverage their artwork to make money and have robust, fulfilling careers.
“Being a creative can mean a lot of things,” she says, noting that it can also be isolating, especially post-pandemic –making it even more essential to connect with other creatives. “I’m very relationshiporiented, and that has led to so many opportunities,” Stacie says.
All Abuzz for Bee Garden
The seeds for Bee Garden, Stacie’s latest collection, were planted when Gingiber released a tea towel on their website in 2023. Though it was a stand-alone home goods product, the Moda design team loved it so much that Stacie decided to turn it into a full fabric collection.
“Beehive Medley was the first print that I designed for the collection,” Stacie says, noting that for part of the design, she revisited a bee element from her earlier Meadowmere collection. “I believe in leveraging existing art when I can,” she says.
According to Stacie, the colors in Bee Garden “are how I like to live my life,” going on to say that if you were to look in her home or in her wardrobe, you’d find the same colors. Bee Garden features a warm palette of sun-drenched honey, cream, coral, and cactus green, accented with a soft raven black and pops of metallic gold. “Gold just makes everything better!” enthuses Stacie.
Do What Makes
You Happy
Whether it’s designing a new fabric collection, mentoring up-and-coming artists, setting aside dedicated time and space – “white space,” as she calls it – to rest her mind and allow new creative ideas to percolate, or nurturing relationships – like having coffee every Thursday with the same group of women for the last 10 years – for Stacie, it all comes down to this: “It needs to make me feel happy!” she says. Fortunately for quilters and creatives everywhere, Gingiber is there to spread that happiness in the form of beautiful and inspiring fabrics and products.

COLLECTION FOR A CAUSE is an ongoing program begun by owner Howard Marcus Dunn, featuring antique prints from our collection and supporting charities and causes that touch the hearts and lives of all of us.
The latest Collections for a Cause, Unity, revisits and reimagines prints from previous Collections and also brings in new prints painstakingly recreated from antique quilts and textile mill books in the Dunn Family archive. Decadent and bold Jacobean florals, swirling paisley, moire stripes, delicate floral sprays, and delightful dots come together in a warm, rich palette of chocolate, cognac, fern, ivory, deep teal, and a pop of bright peony to create a collection that is at once deeply nostalgic and surprisingly fresh.
Proceeds from the Unity collection will be donated to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. The Feeding America network of food banks, pantries, and meal programs serves virtually every community in the United States.

MORRIS MANOR FROM BARBARA
BRACKMAN is Moda’s latest update of William Morris’s classic design. The collection is named for the family’s summer home
Kelmscott Manor, a riverside house they began renting annually in the 1870s. Morris thought Kelmscott Manor “heaven on earth,” a spot he captured in colors echoing the seasonal view. At the Morris Manor they boated, their girls grew up and Morris tended his gardens that provided inspiration for the floral prints.
We’ve recolored a few of our favorites from early Morris lines in river-inspired shades of blue and green. Print collectors will be glad to know we’ve added some not reproduced earlier, such as the leafy Branch and the Scroll floral. These prints will inspire your Arts & Crafts decorating and patchwork projects.

WE'RE BACK TO THE EARLY FRENCH BLUES. Sacre Bleu, sacred blue or holy blue has been the classic color of France since the 15th century. Religion and politics both have claimed this color to be the color of courage.
This collection of blues is inspired by our summers in France and dyeing our antique white linen scraps into a beautiful shade of Woad blue.
Our latest fabric features three of our favorite blues: French Blue, Woad Blue and Indigo. We've also woven in a bit of Ciel Bleu for a subtle play of colors. Try adding some of our new French Ginghams to the mix and you have the perfect start to a French country quilt!

THOUGH GINGHAM FEELS AS AMERICAN as apple pie, it has quite worldly origins. It is said to have originated in either Malaysia or France in the 17th century and started more like a stripe than a check. It was adopted and popularized by the English and the Dutch around 1800 when it became the checked pattern we know today, and was often produced in a cotton or muslin fabric. Our small gingham checks in shades of red, blue and natural are the perfect neutral to add to all of your quilts and sewing projects.

GROWING UP, SOME OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES are of times spent on a lake. We would get a cabin or cottage with my cousins and spend the days swimming, water skiing, fishing and canoeing. Everyone relaxed, laughed a lot and enjoyed nature and being together. Now, as an adult, we cherish the times spent with our own children and grandchildren on the banks of a lake.
“On Lake Time” features the colors and icons of those relaxing getaways. Filled with shorelines, trees, docks and water, this collection will be the perfect fabric to celebrate your special days and memories, “On Lake Time.”

THERE’S A CLASSIC MOVIE that we watched as kids that has a scene I will never forget. Children are running and playing, weaving through potluck tables set up in a cul-de-sac while the dads grill burgers and the moms fuss with the table settings and chat with each other. Overhead, fireworks are going off in the sky and the teen boys are throwing a baseball. That nostalgia for fireworks and summer nights inspired Star Spangled, my latest Red, White and Blue collection. With lots of love for my country and flag, and the perfect retro prints and florals to evoke some treasured memories, this collection is sure to find its way into every corner of my home during the summer months. I hope it inspires many quilts and projects for you, too!

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE RIVER THAMES is tidal through London? The muddy foreshore that is revealed at low tide is home to long-lost buried treasure, medieval tiles, glass bottles, coins, clay pipes and hundreds of ceramic chips from long-broken tea sets.
The searching for these fragments is called intertidal archaeology, but we have a much more romantic name for it: ‘larking’.
You can ‘lark’ anywhere and I do! In my garden, on dog walks, at the beach and over the years, my family and I have collected hundreds of tiny pieces of china from broken tea sets, putting them for safe keeping in our pockets until we get them home to be washed and admired.
I just love the patterns, colours and the glimpses into past lives these larked, once mundane treasures offer. What stories they could tell us!

SAY HELLO TO LEGENDARY LOVE! This collection is a whimsical tribute to the wellknown, idyllic Blue Willow pattern often seen on china and linens. The legend behind this pattern involves two star-crossed lovers forbidden to be together by her father. Once the two eloped and ran away to be together forever, her father quickly pursued them to keep them apart— when the gods intervened and transformed the couple into lovebirds so they could fly away to live happily ever after. While most Blue Willow is often blue and white, I also wanted to include unexpected hues of olive, lilac, and jade with pops of golden topaz and coral for an eclectic collection with many sophisticated and chic combinations. I hope you enjoy creating your own Legendary Love story with this collection!

Speckled is a paint splatter texture layered over a solid dyed Ruby Star Cotton base fabric, creating a rich, deep print with lots of dimension. This collection is even better than solids for supporting all of our Ruby Star Society collections. All skus are RS5027 [color number]. 108” wide fabrics are noted separately and come on 200 thread count cotton.
