For Crystal Manning, "Endless Inspiration Sparks Fresh Ideas"
“This isn't the path I was expecting to take,” Crystal laughs, when asked how her career as a fabric designer began. Since releasing Wild Nectar, her first collection with Moda, this creative path that Crystal “stumbled into” has unfolded in delightful ways, allowing her to explore different styles and develop her own eclectic aesthetic with each new collection.
Prior to designing fabric, Crystal spent 10 years as a graphic designer; but producing catalogs and brochures “didn’t fulfill my creative needs,” she says. In her free time, she got involved in the art community as her creative outlet, and from there, learned about creating seamless patterns and art licensing.
Getting samples of her designs printed at Spoonflower inspied her to take up sewing. “My sister showed me how to make pillowcases,” she says, but she taught herself from there, focusing at first

on mostly garment sewing. Crystal quickly fell in love with sewing and “the soothing sound of the hum of the sewing machine” –though she’s quick to mention that it wasn’t always smooth sailing, chuckling at the memory of an ill-fated attempt at making pajama pants for her husband.
But by 2016, she was using her Spoonflower printed designs to sew samples for indie apparel pattern designers like Lindsey Rae of Sew to Grow, who invited Crystal to attend a quilt market with her. Crystal met with Moda’s design team at that market and joined the Moda family of designers not long after that!
One of Crystal's first sewing adentures: attempting pajama pants for her husband, Jeff. She said, "I was having a laugh till you cry moment."
Each Collection Is “Like
Starting a New Painting”
Though Crystal’s collections always feature beautiful nature-inspired floals, you’d be hard-pressed to pigeonhole her aesthetic or her inspiration into one neat little category. “Moda has allowed me to just be creative,” Crystal says appreciatively. “They haven’t really given me any restrictions.” From famous chefs to 1980s pop art to seasonal landscapes, Crystal finds her inspiation “just about everywhere” and interprets that inspiration into unique collections bursting with color. She typically introduces an entirely new palette with each collection, although almost every collection features a shade of teal. “It’s hard for me to design a collection without some form of teal!” she says with a laugh.
For Parlor, Crystal wanted to create a collection reminiscent of an interior design picture she found. “It was a boho-style room that was rich with texture and felt like a cozy, artistic space – I wanted to capture that,” she explains. The prints themselves were inspired by vintage fabrics she found on an antiquing adventure with her mother and sister.
The result is a collection brimming with texture, from layered and paisley-styled floals to geometric mandalas and ikatinspired diamonds, all in a jewel-toned palette in shades of teal, dijon, pesto, passion fruit, azalea, and plum.
Growing In New Directions
Though the details aren’t set in stone, Crystal shared some hints as to what might inspire a future collection. As an artist,
Crystal designs her collections using a mix of traditional and digital techniques. “I like to sketch and paint my floals first, o decide how I want them to look,” she says, before digitizing and finalizing her designs. “I like the natural look of a brush.” But she is always growing in her art and says that she’s been learning more about gouache in the hopes of creating a collection in more of a “painterly” style, perhaps inspired by her love of plein air painting and the pops of color in her favorite flowers and gadens. She also shared that her sewing bucket list includes doing more applique projects.
Whatever the source of inspiration, Crystal says, her goal is simple: to make people feel happy. “I like to use my artistic abilities to inspire others to make things that bring them joy!” We’re just happy that Crystal’s creative path led her to Moda!

"Blossoms and Blooms" collection started with a simple sight: the vintage watering can on my desk, now a home for my artistic tools – pencils, pens, brushes, markers, and colored pencils. These sparked memories of my childhood crafting experiments. I vividly remember flipping though a craft book filled with eciting projects like beading bracelets, cross-stitching,and embroidery - I tried them all! One of my favorite projects was arranging flower compositions. During summetime, I'd gather wildflowers, seeking out unique shapes and colors, and arange them in anything from old cups to kitchen pots and old watering cans. This collection brings back those fun memories of summer days, filled with creativity and joy.

I would dearly love to have a beautiful garden, one full of fragrant blooms year-round with plenty of seating areas to stop and admire it all. Sadly, I don’t really like gardening…
So, I content myself with visiting gardens and fortunately we have a rather famous one near us; ‘Wisley’, the Royal Horticulture Society’s agship.
I enjoyed a day there drawing and painting in my sketchbook and having many conversations with fellow visitors who were all fascinated to see someone drawing in public; one little girl was excited to hear that drawing patterns and colouring them is a real job!
‘Sweet Cecily’ was started on that lovely day, whilst I was feeling grateful for calling drawing my job and daydreaming about waking up with a beautiful garden of my own to sit in whilst enjoying a book and a cup of tea.

Joie de Vivre is a soft and subtle interpretation of early 19th century French prints and is evocative of an old French parlor room or a lady's dressing room. Bluebird’s Nest
For more than 25 years, I’ve looked out my studio window to draw inspiration from nature for my fabric and quilt designs. The cycle of the seasons and the wildlife surrounding our home influence my color palette and design themes. Robet is a bit of a bird watcher, but more importantly, a bird nurturer. He has numerous bird feeders and houses around our property to attract a variety of birds. Red-headed black birds, meadowlarks, barn swallows, bobwhites and bluebirds gather at the feeders throughout much of the year. Spring brings the return of our pair of geese that nest at the pond. The hoot of an owl is heard through open windows on quiet summer evenings. Quail and pheasant dart in and out of the tall grass in early fall. We’re amazed and delighted by the abundance of feathered friends right outside our door. I hope Bluebird’s Nest inspires you to create a quilt in shades of blue to celebrate the wonders of nature outside your window.

We are frequently asked which collection is our favorite. That’s like asking which child is our favorite. The question is entirely impossible to answer, not to mention we would never agree on just one. And then came Lucky. While we won’t say it’s our favorite, it’s definitely in the op fie! We are animal people- dogs, cats, pigs, sheep - we love them all! However, it’s not just the cute puppies that draw us to Lucky. The collection is happy, fun and very easy to work with. The colors are just a touch different for Sweetwater, and we absolutely love the fresh look!

In her collection Juicy, Melody included 5 colorways of her Hearts design. This season, she’s following up with 5 brand new colors!
In 2023, Melody created her fist big landscape print for her collection Rise and Shine. These prints take a lot of time and care; they’re like putting together a big puzzle, and it’s immensely satisfying when all of the elements come together. A year later, she was ready to do it again, and she made a second landscape print for her collection Carousel. And now, she has pulled all of her favorite things, from race cars to soft serve ice cream into one big print for Best Day Ever. This print is full of references to previous fabric collections. If you look hard, you’ll see motifs from throughout her 15 years of designing fabric.

This collection all started with a new printing of Alexia’s Tiger Stripes design. This is one of her most popular prints from her ten plus years of designing! She has brought back this print in four colorways just like the original printing but with a little update to coordinate each one with her current palette. The playful tiger cats inspired the rest of the collection’s whimsical-meets-classic patchwork aesthetic.
Alexia also brought back two fan favorite supporting prints with this collection, Mini Dot and Sprout. Aren’t they the sweetest?

Sarah aimed to highlight all of the whimsical nature of the story while giving it her own narrative twist. Hello Alice also features a more vibrant and modern color palette that fits right in with Ruby Star Society.
Sarah’s father rescued this vintage Alice in Wonderland book set from being thrown out. Sarah had always loved the story and wanted to do her own take on the classic.

Sarah’s version of Hello Alice is a friendly retelling of characters out of her sketchbook! It includes teacups and petit fours and caterpillars, but she also wanted to capture the characters in a unique twist! Her Mad Hatter is a version of everyone’s quirky madcap aunt. The Tweedles - who aren’t dumb at all - are reimagined as friendly dogs!
