Sweetwater: Great Design Runs in the Family
For the trio behind Sweetwater – mom Karla Eisenach and daughters Lisa Burnett and Susan Kendrick – building their company and brand to the well-loved design group that it is today “has been a life-long process,” according to Lisa.
The seeds of Sweetwater were planted in the 1980s, when Karla started her quilt pattern business, Farmyard Creations. Lisa remembers summers spent folding “thousands and thousands” of patterns. “The quilting industry in the 80s was very different than present day,” says Lisa. “Patterns were gold. There wasn’t an internet or downloads, [and] you couldn’t get free patterns on Pinterest.” Farmyard Creations was a successful business for Karla, but Lisa and Susan didn’t immediately gravitate to quilting.
“After college, we discovered our creativity in a different way,” according to Lisa. In the early 2000s, as the scrapbook industry was booming, Lisa and Susan turned their passion for the craft into a business and
launched their design company, Sweetwater. For nearly a decade, Lisa and Susan designed scrapbook products that were sold in retail stores across the US and around the world, attending trade shows and teaching classes all over the country. “It was very fast-paced and labor intensive,” Lisa admits.
Adapting to New Opportunities
When digital photography started to change the market and traditional scrapbooking began to wane, they realized that they needed to adapt. Karla had been helping her daughters with Sweetwater but was “itching to get back into quilting full-time,” Lisa says. Their timing couldn’t have been better: “When the door to the scrapbooking industry was closing, we were offered the perfect opportunity from Moda to design a fabric line. What a complete blessing that was,” says Lisa. Their debut fabric collection, Authentic, was released at Spring Quilt Market in 2009.

Since then, the trio has designed more than 50 fabric collections for Moda! So how have these three creatives found a way to continue to develop the familiarbut-fresh collections that quilters love? According to Lisa, “We have similarities in style, but our differences in how we work is really how we achieve success!” From task-oriented “workhorse” Susan, to detailoriented “over-analyzer” Lisa, to “little-bitof-both” Karla, the three put their individual strengths together to successfully manage all aspects of their thriving business.
It All Starts at the Kitchen Table
Designing a collection begins by discussing ideas at Karla’s kitchen table. They settle on a collection name, which “can be the hardest part of the entire process,” Lisa says, but it helps them set the tone and theme of the designs. Then they’ll decide on colors – “Sweetwater does have a recognizable style, and we don’t go crazy with new colors,” Lisa admits, but “we do like to switch it up and make each collection unique.” Lisa and Susan create the artwork for all of Sweetwater’s collections digitally, incorporating Karla’s hand-drawn elements into the designs.

A Fun, Vibrant Christmas Collection
Lisa credits Susan for the ideas behind Emmitt and Ivy, Sweetwater’s latest Christmas collection. “She came to the design meeting with rough sketches of snowmen and the idea they had names,” Lisa says. “Her vision was a very fun, vibrant Christmas collection.” Lisa says that the newsprint design in this collection “is one of my most favorite Christmas designs we have done!” The trio has designed some special patterns for Emmitt and Ivy as well: Twinkle, which will be a kit offered by Moda, features appliqued stars, each with two different prints – Karla’s idea, according to Lisa. And Merry Merry is a sampler quilt that includes piecing, applique, and embroidery.
What’s next for Sweetwater? “My mom proclaimed she would never, ever put a certain thing on a piece of fabric,” Lisa teases. “Well, that certain thing is on a piece of fabric…woof, woof!”

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS ARE VERY NEAR AND DEAR TO OUR HEARTS and Emmitt and Ivy is no exception. The most fun part of designing this one was naming the cute snowmen. We had lots of choices, narrowed it down a bit and settled on two names that ust “fit.” We ust love the happy, festive vibes of this collection. Along with the quilts, make sure to check out the adorable ornaments we made in honor of Emmitt and Ivy!

LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW and seeing signs of bright life against a snowy backdrop inspired this collection. My in-laws’ home sits on a hill where the pine trees compete for height. The tall windows all around the perimeter allow for many such views during our Minnesota winters. Rich foliage boasting of deep emeralds set beside deep reds instantly give the Christmassy feel I’ve come to love! The collection’s name, Love & Cheer, invites a feeling of warmth from the beaks of classic cardinals and robins. The Christmas season is one of intensity. The bold contrast of the cold outdoors ushers us into the warmth of our homes. Nature quiets into hibernation while a few strong ones stay out to shine. These classic poinsettias, birds, holly, berries, pomegranates, ivy and the like sing. Their cheerful song invites us to slow down, peer out the window, and spread love and cheer! And to do so to both friend and neighbor, far and near!

A Vintage Christmas
MY CHRISTMAS DECOR STARTS WITH LOTS OF QUILTS - on the beds, thrown over the sofa and chairs, on tabletops, decking the walls, and draped over an evergreen wreath by the front door. It’s the easiest way to plan a theme and decorate my home for the holidays. Inspiration for a theme comes in many forms. A dusty box of vintage wrapping paper from over 50 years ago was discovered amongst some of my Gramma’s belongings. What a treasure! There were pieces large and small, carefully smoothed and folded, holding long forgotten memories of Christmases past. I envisioned all the quilts I could make from these scraps of paper featuring bells and holly, candy stripes and holiday greetings. I hope my collection, A Vintage Christmas, brings back memories of your favorite holiday celebrations and inspires you to make new quilted memories for the years to come.

IT’S THAT MAGICAL TIME OF YEAR… time to watch the snow fall, lights twinkle and to take in the sights and sounds of the holidays. For this collection, I was inspired by vintage European postcards, Italian paper crafts and antique wrapping papers. Buon Natale, which means Merry Christmas in Italian, is meant to transport you to another quieter more wondrous time when gift giving was handmade, and the art of Christmas was about the wonder of it all. Based on my favorite tones of reds, tans and creams, I have added some new tones of greens to create the feel of a Fig Tree Christmas. I cannot wait to share all of the wonderful projects we will making and crafting with the special village print & the vintage cards! Buon Natale everyone!

THERE IS NOTHING QUITE LIKE THAT MOMENT where the first feeling of fall fills the air. As summer dwindles away and the days grow shorter, they bring with them a sense of reflection and quiet. The soft crunch of drying leaves underfoot, the smell of burning wood from fireplaces off in the distance, and the beautiful palette of sunsets full of purples, oranges and browns, can be seen through the bare branches of trees that have tucked in for the winter ahead. I designed Pumpkin Spice Gatherings to celebrate the season in which we don our sweaters, break out our warmest quilts, and start plans for the string of holidays to come, when we can gather with loved ones.

GROWING UP IN IDAHO, it’s safe to say that summertime was the happiest time of the year. I spent my summers running through the sprinklers with my little brothers, eating popsicles with my sisters, and picking raspberries with my grandma. Especially after a very long winter, we enjoyed every moment of sunshine and blue skies we could. It was heavenly.
When I was designing this collection, I wanted to revisit my favorite rainbow of summer colors and mix them with beautiful florals, basics, and lots of fun vintage prints. My hope for these fabrics was to capture even a little bit of the magic of those childhood summers. It’s happy, cheery and full of fun. It’s Summertime.

SUPERBLOOM IS A SISTER COLLECTION to Wild Blossoms, with a new ombre widthof-fabric print. This time, there is a light, delicate colorway of the print to contrast the deep jewel-toned version. The quilt projects for this group show numerous ways to use the WOF prints. A charm pack table runner, “Centerpieced,” makes small 3” blocks with the colorful floral borders on each side. “Gathering Wildflowers” uses FQ or 1/4 yard cuts to make sweet flower blocks that lineup between the panels. “Fiona’s Daisy Chain” is an Irish Chain quilt with a twist of the large squares using the wildflower print. And a modern quilt uses a jelly roll with the panels to make “Turn Signal” and lead your eye between dark and light sides.

When I am working on a new collection, I spend time leading up to art delivery playing in my sketchbook. This helps me create the initial energy behind the art. The sketchbook is where all the magic happens for me and I use it to record fun drawing ideas for the theme.
My daughter Violet and I went for a walk and found a bunch of beautiful ginkgo leaves. took them home, brushed them with acrylic paint, and rubbed the back with a spoon until it transfered to a new sheet of paper. Then I created the final art from the printed leaves.
