ALEC GOLINGER

Tell us a bout yourself and Alec. How did Alec get his interest in modelling and as a mom, how did you give him encouragement?

Alec is 11 years old based in Australia. He is a very athletic, hardworking, and a well-mannered kid. Everything he does he wants to do well at.

This is Alec's nature. He loves animals, nature, all sports. He is also funny. I'm his mom Lindy. I have two boys. A year ago I asked Alec would he like to be on tv he said yes. So we went and found an agent. We met with a couple, and Alec chose who he wanted to go with.

It was more of an acting/modelling agency. It's important to let the kid choose the agent. Let them meet a few. They will get a gut feeling as to who believes in them. As a mom, you have to have some free time to manage your child/ children. Castings are often last minute and always in school hours. As are the jobs. Moms do a lot of sitting around while the kids shoot and a lot of driving.

How important is modelling education: Has he attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies has he taken?

I don’t believe in modelling courses. Alec has never done one. Acting is a craft that needs to be practiced and taught strategies. For this a course is good. Modelling is about confidence, engaging with the camera, the photographer the crew, Selling the product you are wearing enjoying it.

It's about being coming alive. Moving, laughing, communicating with the camera. So to be a model you need to be confident, smiley, take direction well. Many models are not so attractive, but they know how to engage with a camera. How to light up a room. It's about energy. Uplifting/engaging energy. A current that attracts people to you.

What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model? What are Alec's goals as a model and you as a mom? How do you see him progressing in this field?

As a model, Alec does not have set goals.

Realistically there are fit sizes for child models.

Babies, size 4, size 10, and minimal size 12.

After that it's quiet. You have to be realistic about this. We see him progressing in the acting arena. If he decides, he wants to continue as an adult model we have to reevaluate then.

What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology, and photography?

The advertising industry is an interesting beast. We support the industry and work with them regularly. Alec understands what fantasy is and what is the reality. The main thing we teach him is to be humble and not talk about his modelling too much. If people ask about it, he answers but in general, he will never talk about it. He is just a kid with a job. He knows the modelling job has an expiry date for everyone.

How do you communicate with people?

Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?

Does Alec eat nutritiously? How do you balance his studies and modelling career?

Alec goes through phases with food. Sometimes he eats well sometimes he doesn’t. Because he does a lot of sport, he grazes a lot. He eats a lot of eggs, nuts, oats, rice. He does not have a huge appetite. It's hard to balance school/ sport.acting and modelling. As his mom, this is my job to find the balance for him He often does his homework quite late at night or early in the morning. He may have to do work at lunch at school.

What is his dream role as a model? What do you aspire for him?

We don’t have aspirations for modelling or a dream role. We try not to make Alec think it is the be all and end all. He just does his best, and that’s what we focus on. He just wants to save money and have fun and learn. He has acting goals. To be in a film etc

Does Alec have any limitations? How do you define his boundaries when choosing to accept a modelling request?

Yes, he has boundaries and limitations for modelling. He would not do anything that he felt was wrong or that he felt uncomfortable with. Plus I am always in the room on a shoot.

But he does do many things that may be uncomfortable. For example having 20 buckets of water spilled on his head for a commercial in the middle of winter.

State your availability: Would you travel? Work full-time, part-time? Any hours?

Alec is always available to work if he wants the job. We have gone interstate for a job, and he would be happy to work overseas.

For Alec: Tell us your most memorable experience in modelling so far?

Alec's most memorable job so far are the sports location shoots when he gets to model and does sport. He gets very happy about that. Scooter shoots, soccer, shoots, etc. He also loves when he does commercials and gets big buffet feasts as a kid he thinks that’s fun. He loves the friends he has made and worked with.

As a mom, what pieces of advice could you give to the parents reading this?

As a mom, the piece of advice I would give to other parents is this. If you have a child that wants to model the earlier, you start the better. Like I said it starts from babies and size 4. Pick an agency with integrity that is honest about what work is available and when. Be realistic about what to expect.

There are only a handful of kids in every size fit and age that are working regularly. Then they move on, and the next group moves up to the next fit. You have to market and manage your kids too It's teamwork with you and the agency. Pick an agency you trust. The moms have to do a lot of driving you have to be up for this. You have to make sure the kids don’t make it there focus. Otherwise, it's not good for their self-esteem. There are many knock backs you have to roll with that.

Where are you based and what exactly do you do?

I am located in Dubai working as a fashion designer for Rami Al Ali and also the creative director for my brand Oz Go which is based in the Philippines.

At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion?

If I remember it correctly at the age of 5 or 6, I was sketching my mom's wedding gown on any surface I could draw on like doors, chairs, etc.

How did you prepare for a career in fashion?

I took up a short course in fashion at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines and started to experience the world of fashion through internship and doing clothes for certain clients after studying.

How do you stay updated on the current trends?

By doing a lot of research and viewing upcoming trends from Premiere Vision.

How important is Fashion Week for you?

It is a platform for both young and senior designers to market their product through a wide range of audience. It helped me a lot to promote my brand.

What is your dream job?

Being the creative director of my brand but in a global scale. OZ GO PARIS is the dream.

What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself taking your fashion career?

To take up MA at Central Saint Martins. Make my brand as big as Chanel, Dior, Alexander Mcqueen and Valentino among others. *crossed fingers* Name the top three things in your fashion kit that are must-haves?

Scissors, paper, and pencil.

Tell us your most unforgettable experience as a fashion designer?

When I got to dress up my sister, Rachelle Ann Go, who is a theatre actress in London during the 25th anniversary of Miss Saigon.

Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in modelling as a career?

My name is Braun Wilburn. I live in San Diego, California and I am 25 years old. I’ve always been told that I should become a model, and I finally decided a little over a year ago to begin the process of transitioning into a model. The main reason I am pursuing a career in modelling is that I believe modelling is a good stepping-stone that could lead me to jobs in the entertainment industry. Eventually, I would like to transition from modelling into acting.

How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses?

What related courses or studies have you taken?

I have attended modelling and acting courses through John Casablanca modelling and career centers, but I believe that you learn the most when you are actually on a set/ photo-shoot. I have as of recently been working with Wander Aguiar and Andrey Bahia, who have been extremely critical in the beginning stages of the modelling career. They have taught me more about modelling and what to expect on different photo-shoots than anybody else.

What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?

You have to take care of your body. People always tend to believe that going to the gym and having a routine workout schedule is that hardest part, but little do they know, keeping a clean diet is the hardest part for most people and them never truly take dieting into account.

Another factor you need is a good sense of style and keeping up with trends. Lastly, I believe you, above all, you have to have thick skin. You can’t pay any attention to what people say or think. You have to do you. The wolf doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of the sheep.

What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?

It would be great to be featured in a magazine and eventually work my way into commercials.

I want to be featured on brands like Calvin Klein and any other big brands. I’ve always been told that I have a GQ style and look. I would also like to be featured on Instagram pages like MenWithClass/Style and other wellknown modelling pages.

What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology, and photography?

The only thing I know about the ad industry and phycology is that sex sells. I don’t know much more than that. Still an area that I have to learn.

How do you communicate with people?

Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?

Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?

I lift weights about four times a week for close to 2 hours each time, and I do cardio three times a week. I eat fairly healthy but, now and then I usually have a cheat day where I eat pretty much anything I want. Don’t judge me; my sanity depends on it.

What is your dream role as a model?

Like I said earlier, I would love to be featured in ads for brands similar to Calvin Klein but eventually would like to branch off into acting.

Do you have any limitations? How do you define your boundaries when choosing to accept a modelling request?

No limitations. I’m pretty open to just about anything.

I would love to travel and work full-time as a model. I would love to move to LA to work full time as a model.

How did you get to where you are now in your career?

Dedication, keeping inspired by all the creatives in the world. Lots and lots of test shooting .

How did your education prepare you for the future?

I learnt mainly through mentorship from when i started 15 years ago as a hair and makeup artist i would assist the photographers i worked with and they would mentor me with photography . I then self taught my self and recently was a intern at a reputable studio , my mentor there was a world renown conceptual photographer. He taught me that your creativeness can go anywhere you can imagine it to go .

What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?

My mother, she always has my back and always believes in my talent. As in photographers , Mario Testino & Steven Klein are my heroes.

Do you feel like you’ve met your goals and are successful?

Always climbing the ladder, I have to say there has been hurdles but that keeps it exciting. Many Goals ahead.

If you had to do it over again, what would you change?

Stop changing jobs, save cash and buy more amazing photography equipment.

What advice would you give someone who is young and wants to have a position such as yours one day?

Work hard , be nice , and stay inspired.

How do you stay inspired?

Just keeping up with fashion trends , social media is great for inspiration .

What photography related tips do you recommend?

Understand balance, experiment with different equipment, every detail counts so know how to do post work .

Tell us about yourself and Elwood. How did Elwood get her interest in modelling and as a mum, how did you talk to her?

Elwood has always been very happy in front of the camera. As a little girl, she loved seeing herself in photos and loved performing on stage for our family and friends. I have always encouraged Elwood and supported her in her love of being on stage and in the spotlight.

How important is modelling education: Has she attended modelling courses?

What related courses or studies has she taken?

I think the best education in modelling/acting is the real life lessons that you learn whilst on the job. Elwood has learned a lot of important life lessons through modelling and acting. Modelling looks very glamorous and amazing to the outside world, but in reality, there are a lot of knock backs and castings that you have to go to be successful.

You need a thick skin and a strong character to survive in this industry and be successful.

This industry has already taught her that you need to work really hard and be very passionate about what you love to be successful.

In terms of actual education, Elwood has had mentoring sessions with several prominent photographers and actors to help her with the technicalities of modelling and acting.

What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?

To be a model - you need to love being in front of a camera more than anything, and be willing to work really hard to be a success.

What are her goals as a model and you as a mum? How do you see her progressing in this field?

As a model, Elwood wants to continue working and collaborating with brands and people that she loves and believes in.

Currently she is the face of Aeroplane jelly and will continue to work with them in the future on their campaigns. She has loved working with them, because it's a brand that she loves and relates to as an 11 year old

What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology, and photography?

That it is very important to cast the right people to promote products. Consumers and customers can relate to people that are seen as "normal" and more like them.

How do you communicate with people?

I run my own business, and have learned to be very patient dealing with clients and with people in general.

Elwood loves good food! She has travelled extensively, and has been exposed to many cultures. As a female tween, I am extremely conscious of promoting "healthy living" without restricting her from living food in any way. She plays a lot of sport, and being active is apart of her daily life.

She is incredibly balanced with school and work, and manages to excel at both.

This year, she is in grade 6, and she was elected school captain, a role which she is very proud of and takes very seriously. She has many extra responsibilities with this role, but manages to balance it with modeling and acting. We are very proud of the amazing person she is becoming.

What is her dream role as a model? What do you aspire for her?

She would love to represent more of the brands that she loves, and continue to follow her dreams wherever they may lead.

She also wants to go to Hollywood one day!

Does she have any limitations? How do you define her boundaries when choosing to accept a modeling request?

Elwood is very versatile. Her passion is singing and she also does a lot of acting and stage performing. So, sometimes she needs to make choices and knock back certain jobs, to make time for others.

With modeling, we look at each job as it presents itself and talk it through together to decide if it is the right job for her. Elwood is involved in every decision when it comes to deciding on which jobs to take.

We try to choose age appropriate modeling jobs that still promote her as an 11 year old, not as an adult.

As a mum, what pieces of advice would you give to the parents reading this?

A very wise piece of advice that I took away from the amazing Queenie Van De Zandt - That if your child does not love this more than anything in the world - don't do it!!

It's really hard work for kids and they need a thick skin. As a parent, you become emotionally invested in auditions and the jobs that your child is working so hard to be successful in, because you are also part of their journey. So you also have to be there to pick up the pieces when things don't always go so well.

There is a lot of rejection, but there are also a lot of very positive lessons to be learned from this industry. It gives kids a inner strength and confidence that transpires to many other Photographer: Jade Schilling areas in life.

We have and would travel for the right job. If the job does not interfere too much with her schooling and other activities, then we usually take it on. Elwood does a lot of "after school" work. At the moment, she is playing a lead role in an amateur play in which she is rehearsing 3 times a week outside of school hours. She is really enjoying it!

We have travelled interstate for work with Nickelodeon and Aeroplane and we would most definitely travel again for the right job.

For Elwood: Tell us your most memorable experience in modelling so far?

I absolutely loved being the lead character in the Care Australia short film I did last year for the "walk in her shoes"campaign.

Not only was the cast and crew amazing, but it was all for an incredible cause, and I felt good being a part of it.

Last week, I found out that it is going to be shown internationally! So I am even more excited now!

What would you tell your fans who shared and voted for you?

I'm really thankful for all people that support me in the whole process, all people who voted and made others vote for me! It was for sure more than I expected!! And I'm jubilant to know that there exist all these people sending to me so much love and good energy!! I hope I could give them even a little bit of that love back!!! And of course, I want to share this winning with all of them!

Have you been a magazine cover before and what magazine was that?

Yes, I have been a magazine cover before in some magazines in Venezuela, but never in an international one, I hope it will be the first of many!

You are very humble, how do you maintain that attitude?

I don't want to lose myself. I do meditate as much as I can. I always try to be the best version of myself, and that's means be real, be integral with my values, with what I believe and what I know in any situation.

Who is the most influential person in your life?

My mum is one of the most influential people in my life for sure; I tell her everything all the time. She shows me a lot of things that have been helping me to take the most important decisions in my life.

If you had to change your life all over again, what part of your life would you change?

Nothing! I truly believe everything happens for some reason, good and bad things; all is about learning and experience. Every single thing that happened in your life makes you the person who you are today.

For the models who are starting their social media accounts or those who are trying to grow it, what is your advice?

It is a lot of jobs to do, more than usually, we thought, you have to be posting like regularly, and been interacting with people who became interesting on your profile; they are your treasure in this case. And of course my best advice after saying that could be: you most try to be yourself so that you could offer something new, something different.

Final message?

I have to thank you again. I'm euphoric with being the first cover of Model Citizen Magazine. I hope this will be the beginning of the huge thing, and I'm not talking about me of course, about you (Model Citizen) who decided to do this amazing project and in a few month, it has been growing up really fast! At the beginning modelling for me was just a hobby, an experience that I wanted to have, but passing the time it became my full time job a totally new way to live my life how I never thought before.

How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?

I really believe the model education is important but not just in the way to learn how to walk or how to pose in front of some camera, I think there should be something else. Someone how really prepared you to afford the model life. Because I'm pretty sure is not what people usually think.

I took a course for an entire month every day all day because I went to the "super model Venezuela" contest which was organised by The international agency Ford models.

What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?

Attitude is everything on modelling, because bodies are always different and actually there exists different types of modelling and of course different types of models ( skinny, fatty, older, young, etc)

What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?

Of course I would love to work for the most biggest brand in the world. fragrances , clothes, shoes, bags, underwear, cover magazines.

For me as a model the real success is be able to work with the most important brands, live the experience, be respected, enjoying, get some money (of course) and at the same time have a peacefully private life, which probably is the most difficult part.

What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology and photography?

This is actually really interesting because the whole thing is about how you selling something, I mean it really doesn't matter what you are trying to sell, it is about what you want people think about your product, the idea. And that idea is what you sell. So of course there are a huge psychological think behind of all this which is amazing.

What is your dream role as a model?

I'm not sure what's means this question , but if I understood, maybe my dream role as a model Is been in a Victoria secret fashion show, that is a magnificent event and you have to be strong enough to make it.

For me exercise is part of my life, it is something that I do since I was a child, I done different disciplines (swimming, basketball, tennis, biking, running) so for me now is just something that my body ask for, I just tried to do everyday, and take a rest when I need (is really important take a rest). Right now I'm practicing yoga as hard as I can just because I enjoying feeling my progress and also it help me a lot to be focus on every single part of my life.

Tell us the most unforgettable experience you had in the past?

There are just to many!! Modelling change my life because it give to me the opportunity to go out from my country (which is in a really bad situation), I knew a lot of people, different cultures, countries, it give to me the chance to know the world, good and not to good things but at the end everything was and is a big experience and completely worthless.

“Right now 'Fashion Week' in LA is a hot button issue. We don't have ONE; we have several production companies trying to host this event. It's a mess, and the truth is the industry participates in MARKET WEEK, not FASHION WEEK (as of right now). Fashion Week is the entertainment platform for presenting designer collections, while Market Week is the time when designers sell their product to stores. I think the industry, especially LA, needs both of these events working in tandem for ultimate success and have already taken the steps to bring both sides together for a discussion. The future of both Los Angeles Fashion Week and Los Angeles Market Week is exciting - and I believe the best years are yet to come. Also, it's noticeable that many major design houses, i.e., LV, Burberry, Tom Ford, etc., have moved their fashion shows to event spaces/ private homes around LA this last year. The growth spurt in LA's Fashion scene is real, and it's a beautiful thing to watch (especially with the infusion of technology into the R&D sector of our industry). In the US, New York Fashion was thought to be the centre of the industry - but that's not the case anymore (especially in a global economy). LA Fashion is a true tour de force!“

Buyers Love The New Mart. We only carry clothing, footwear and accessories collections :) And believe it or not, but it's possible for Buyers to get introduced to the entire building in just 45 minutes. We design and print a new directory book before each Market Week. This directory book is a guide to shopping the building (and in the back of it there are categories of merchandise to help narrow focus when necessary).

Retail consumers come to the New Mart for Sample Sales. We don't promote these, as it's a secret, but on the last Friday of every month (and every Friday in December) the showrooms open their doors to sell samples direct to the public.

Fashionistas and new business' line up for the opportunity to purchase these designer samples (that are often from a collection that is not yet available in stores). BUT the main visitors, or consumers, coming to the New Mart are Retail Buyers.

Retail Buyers come to the New Mart for our product. The New Mart is a curated building, with management turning down 2 of 3 leasing applications on average. So glad you guys saw us! Yes, we do all sorts of collaborations, and fashion is one of them.

How does a person get started in Modeling?

The million dollar question!

It's not a simple answer to do this or just do that. It's a series of things that being the whole package together.

I often tell newbies are starting out that the best and most honest advice I can give is to treat yourself like a brand, shoot with the best photographers you have access to, and make sure your social media presents you in a professional manner. I've been in the industry for over 16yrs. I know what agents & managers want to see on social media, and it's not you out partying every night or using foul language. Someone that wants to be a model should treat their social media as if their boss might see it every day.

What are the height and size requirements for a high fashion model?

Times are changing and models don't need to be as tall as they used to. Some agencies may still request a height limit on their website, but even then, rules are broken. One of my models is only 5'3" and she doesn't do runways, but she does lots of fashion shoots and collabs.

Are there jobs for models who specialise in just parts of the body?

Yes of course!! Hand models, leg models, hair models, and more. Think about a watch ad or a shoe ad.

Someone needs to have adamant looking body parts for those jobs and not just any model will do.

How much do models make?

Another million dollar question haha... You could be a struggling model who starts with only booking one $400 job a month, or end up being the next Gisele Bundchen who makes over $40,000,000/yr. Big money gaps in the modelling industry. I've worked with models who have had huge successful bookings and made enough to live all year of one job, and then not book anything else again for a month! If you're going to be a model, be prepared for the financial ups & downs.

Can a modelling agency tell just from a snapshot if I have what it takes to be a model?

I've been in the industry for so long that yes, I believe there are some cases I can tell if someone has greater potential than others on a snapshot. However, no matter what I need to see what their body looks like too.

For me, I like personality as well, and that's something you can't do in a snapshot.

Most agencies are now requiring you submit photos with video as well.

Are modelling conventions and searches a good place to start a modelling career or are they a total ripoff?

There are several legitimate places to get information, but I would be cautious of conventions.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a model so bad, but I didn't know where to start. When I was 15 my boyfriend who was 16 got invited to a modelling convention, and we both went. It was a total rip off, and they were asking for tens of thousands of dollars. I 100% believe you can start modelling on your own with the right and honest guidance, and that's why I created The Model Adviser. Most of these searches or conventions are started by people that have never been a model or worked as a manager or agent. They hire a big name to put on flyers, and that's it. How can you trust someone who's never been there?

Why is everyone giving different advice on modelling?

I wish I knew why. Only trust advice from a real talent agent, manager, or model that's been there. I've run across modelling schools ran by people that were an extra in a movie one time in the 90's... To me, that is like going to a bike shop for a doughnut. Not a good idea.

Everyone is waiting for this. What is your best career advice for our aspiring and amateur fashion models, photographers, makeup artist, stylist and bloggers?

The best career advice for all of those careers at once is to keep up on your social media, and collaborations. Social media can make and break careers, and be positively life-changing for so many. A lot of people I work with have up to 5M followers, and they make big bucks because they treated their social media as a full-time job. I promise you your Instagram page is not a waste of time.

How did you get to where you are now in your career?

It's definitely crazy to hear that question considering I'm still in the very early stages of my career! It feels super exciting to say and makes me feel very fortunate. I'm only 19 years old, but I don't want anyone to think that my age means I haven't worked very hard already! I definitely believe if I wouldn't have pushed myself and spent the countless hours researching and practicing that I did, I would be no where. No one really sees the amount of time you put into anything. I've spent hours researching the industry, working on my brand, trial and error shooting, and tons of networking! My drive is something I take pride in and if I wouldn't have pushed myself and stayed true to me, I'd be no where. This goes for the future as well.

How did your education prepare you for the future?

Throughout my early education, I've taken many classes that have taught me a variety of things I use today. Some of my most beneficial courses range from photography and art history to core subjects such as English and writing.

Throughout my educational career I have taken multiple art courses and electives. My education has taught me about technology, how my mind works in my art, and how to achieve what it is I envision and how the world may perceive it. I believe that without my studies, I wouldn't be able to communicate, network, and manage my social accounts as well as I do. Having an education is everything

What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?

My biggest inspiration for my brand has to be Annie Leibovitz.

She's led the photography career I dream and strive towards.

From magazine fashion photography, to celebrity portraiture, and also themed fantasy shoots-- she's done it all! I didn't realize until a few years ago how much I was following her footsteps until someone had shown me her work. She's such an inspiration of mine and is someone I look up to immensely.

She's a true artist and I believe everyone should view her work.

Do you feel like you’ve met your goals and are successful?

I definitely I believe I am successful for being able to do what I love at my age. I've met so many of my goals in under a year and there are still so many that I have yet to achieve! If you had to do it all over again, what would you change?

If I had to do it all over again, I believe I'd change the people I surrounded myself with. You realise when doing things like this that not everyone is your true friend and has good intentions. You really realise who has your back-- as cliche as it sounds. It's all about having positive vibes and a great support system.

What advice would you give someone who is young and wants to have a position such as yours one day?

If I had to give any advice to someone who is young (like myself) and wants to have a position like mine, I'd tell them to follow their gut. Follow your dreams 100%!

Always work extremely hard to your best potential. Never give up and do not take no for an answer! It's going to be extremely hard, but if you do it right, you'll be rewarded.

How do you stay inspired?

People always ask me what my inspiration is and how I stay inspired, I feel really bad because I can never give a definite answer.

To be honest, I'm inspired by everything I experience in the 24 hours of day. Sometimes it's subconsciously and others on purpose.

I take bits and pieces of what I experience and add myself into it.

What photography related tips could you give?

For me, my go to photography equipment all has to do with lighting. I make sure to have my lighting reflector and external flash with me all the time. I love shooting natural light as well and manipulating it to my advantage! I'm also in love with my 50mm lens.

Recently in NYC, the models and I have gotten to work with several interesting animals ranging from show dogs, parrots, snakes, and dragons! Super exciting stuff! During one of these shoots, I was actually laying in the middle of a busy NYC intersection during rush hour! It was insane... We would go into the street during red lights. One time I looked up and there was the bumper of a truck directly above my forehead!

If I work hard, I'm professional and I have good attitude, then client will book me again.

What is your dream role as a model?

My dream role is worldwide campaign for some famous fragrances. I think, I have this kind of face.

I don't have any limitations, if everything is normal.

I wouldn't cut my hair or change a colour if there isn't enough high budget.

But in fashion industry, you never know, what can happens.

Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in modelling as a career?

I firmly believe that people grow the most when they step outside their comfort zone. That’s why I just recently quit my job as a digital business consultant in Switzerland, sold my belongings and moved to beautiful Cape Town.

I wanted to open a new chapter in my life and start living the way I always dreamed of. With this vision in my mind and the action I took, it was no coincidence when I became friends with a successful model, and she suggested to meet with her agency.

From there - since I started modelling this year, it feels like the right thing to do. My first shootings and modelling jobs were so much fun that I can’t wait to do more. Also meeting with so many beautiful personalities and creative talents along the way is pure joy.

Modelling as a career is very appealing to me because, on the same time, it depends on and also contributes to my positive, fit, healthy and travel-intensive lifestyle.

How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?

I think it is like any other discipline. There are some basic knowledge and skill set you can acquire, but nothing beats practical experience and continuous selfimprovement.

When I was in Cape Town, I attended a TV commercial casting workshop, which contributed a lot to my self-awareness and how comfortable I am today in front of cameras.

Other than that I try to learn as much as I can from the photographers, stylists, models and clients I work with.

What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?

There are many success factors I guess. But I think the most important thing is to be comfortable with yourself and stay authentic. Furthermore, I believe that you have to work hard, always believe in your dream and never give up. It is part of the process to put yourself out there and get neglected. You only fail once you give up. At the end, it’s all about meeting the right people and being at the right place at the right time – to have a fit between what you have to offer and what a client looks for.

What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?

My goal is to be a successful international model and to travel the world. I have just recently relocated from Cape Town to Southeast Asia and looking for the next opportunity to catch.

I am very keen on joining a great agency either in Asia, Australia or the Americas to also be represented outside South Africa.

When I recently had a stop-over in Dubai, I saw a beautiful advertisement for a major fashion brand on a huge billboard. At that moment I told myself “that guy up there, that could be you – that should be you – that will be you!”.

That’s my goal; that’s what I am working towards.

What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology, and photography?

As a former project manager, I have led several marketing projects and ad campaigns. I am very keen on IT and how digital technologies transform whole industries – the ad industry included.

As a model, I have the chance to switch into another role and see the full production from an entirely different perspective. This is absorbing.

How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly?

I am a very open-minded, positive, fun and energetic person, and that’s how I communicate. I also understand that partnerships of any kind are based on trust, commitment, and respect – that’s what I give and also expect from clients, colleagues, and friends. I like to be challenged and leave my comfort zone – therefore unique requirements, new ideas, and big dreams have my fullest attention.

Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?

Yes, I do, and I believe that a healthy lifestyle is essential to a successful life.

Working out almost every day and greatly enjoying a vegetarian/vegan diet has become an essential element of my lifestyle.

When I was a little child, I decided not to eat meat and fish anymore because it felt completely wrong to me and I didn’t understand how people and my parents were able to eat dead animals. It feels amazing! I am very happy & honoured to be the readers’ choice - thank you all!!

Furthermore, it motivates me to keep spreading my message and try to inspire and encourage others to believe in their dreams, leave their comfort zone and make themselves happy.

You can write very well. Tell us, what advice could you give to people who will be writing their entry to us?

Well, I believe in quality and substance. If you want to make a difference and stand out, you have to go the extra mile.

When answering your questions, I try to see through it and use it as a chance to show you more about my personality than you would have expected. That is what I mean with substance.

Everybody has a story to tell; everybody has a unique personality. So my advice would be always to point out what makes you special and how you can provide value for the person who is reading this right now. Try to give answers with depth, insights and substance rather than general statements.

Another point that is very important to me in everything I do is quality. Only if I give my very best and push my personal limits, I am satisfied.

For me, quality reflects how committed you are and how bad you want something. Only if you aim for greatness, you can achieve outstanding results.

What are we expecting from you?

If you have followed my story, you know that I have escaped from the hamster wheel of the corporate world to catch my dreams and live a life full of freedom, happiness and magic.

Even though I was in a position where most people would probably settle down, I decided to start all over again and begin a new adventure. I never want to look back at my life and regret not having done something I was dreaming of, only because of the fear of losing all the amenities and status I had already reached.

My short-term focus lies in pushing my modelling career. Right now I am working in Istanbul and after that, I will probably go to Shanghai before I head back to Cape Town where it all started. After that, I will evaluate how to continue with modelling.

Besides that, I am currently thinking about how to use my knowledge about digital transformation and how disruptive business models can be created based on digital technologies. Either, I will build up my own digital business or start offering consultancy services next year.

Did people ask, why Sandro LifeArt? There are many reasons for LifeArt. First of all, it is the personal promise to myself to settle for nothing less than I can dream of for my life and try to make it a masterpiece. To do so and therefore become a LifeArtist has a lot to do with personal growth, life-competencies and awareness I won’t gain trough formal education or while stuck in an absorbing nine-to-five job.

But LifeArt is not about me, it is about all those amazing people that make the world already a better place by living a conscious life full of love, joy and harmony. Everybody that has understood that he/she is the creator of their own reality and takes full responsibility of their life is already a LifeArtist.

I wish everybody who reads this, remembers what they are/were secretly dreaming of, what they would be and do if not for this fear of failing and all those reasons why it might be better and rational to remain in the status quo. And then go for it! Find this one reason why something could work out, believe in it, take action and I am very sure that life will reward you big time!

In order to support such transformations, I am planning to create a platform that allows LifeArtist to connect with each other, spread consciousness and positivity as well as sharing their knowledge about how to transform life into a masterpiece. I believe that there is a huge need for such a platform in order to support so many much needed paradigm shifts that will eventually disrupt all those outdated systems we still live in today and open the way for a truly remarkable 21st century.

KAREN PATMAS

I modelled as a teenager and have returned to modelling after working with my Master's degree for many years. I have found that my true joy and passion is modelling. As I have resumed my modelling career over the past year, I have been very pleased with the successes I have had and the amazing people I have been meeting and networking with. I have had a chance to be on runways in various areas including Hollywood and excited to be signed and returning for another Hollywood runway show soon. I have also been in local magazines, in a commercial, on a cover, and in online advertisements.

I feel modelling education is very important. I have a strong base due to being able to attend a modelling and industry training when I first started in the industry. This base is very stable and now I continue to build off of that through other recent courses I have taken. I feel it is vital to continue attending trainings for growth and continue to challenge myself to always be setting goals to be moving forward. Trainings are necessary for building a solid foundation, to keep up your talent, and to reach for higher levels of success.

Recent model/acting trainings include: Ryan Glascow in Los Angeles (acting class), Brittany Sharaun in Los Angeles (runway training), Rebecca Cook in Spokane Washington (voice over training), Rebecca McNeil in Spokane (theatre class), Morgan Graham in Nashville (industry training), Regina Moore in Nashville (private acting coaching), Annie and Randy Dorman (print work training and also acting coaching).

Being fit to be a model includes professionalism, being responsible such as being prepared and on time, treating everyone with respect, working well with other models/actors, being able to take direction from producers , photographers, and directors, being flexible, being disciplined with healthy eating and consistent fitness routines, being able to take constructive criticism, and being involved in continued training.

My goal as a model is to be able to represent brands successfully in various media including magazines and commercials. I would like to expand my modelling to include acting and be able to be in film and television.

I took photography in college and also courses in advertising which included psychology of advertisement. This led me to my interest in human behaviour. I then earned a Masters degree and worked in the psychology industry. I received my Master's degree and then clinical licensure to be a behavioural health therapist. I also received an additional certification in trauma training.

I have excellent communication skills, am friendly and patient. I worked in the healthcare profession as a therapist for many years. I taught communication skills and was skilled in de-escalating patients. I had to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.

I eat nutritiously and am consistent on exercising. I have a personal trainer and workout at the gym four days a week. In addition to that, I add running and kickboxing. I am trained in Muay Thai Kickboxing. I love to be active in daily life and enjoy hiking, sports, kayaking, and snorkelling when in Hawaii.

My dream is to be signed and representing a major national or international brand.

My boundaries are that I must work for someone reputable and professional. I would not participate in pornographic modelling.

I am available for full-time work and willing to travel. I am also a hard worker and open to any hours needed.

My most memorable experience so far is being a runway model in the Preview Models show in Hollywood. It is also exciting being invited to be in international models listing magazine.

I am a fashion stylist and a creative consultant. My story began when my parents asked me about what they should wear for a party with the theme of Retro…and here I am today providing services in the field of fashion, beauty and entertainment/events. I am based in Singapore with a true love for wine, shopping, travelling and food.

What is your biggest weakness?

Sometimes I give up too quickly.

Why do like working as a creative consultant?

My dream is to tell stories/concepts through my style of work of fashion and beauty and in future open up a one-stop shop studio with these creative services of styling, directing, talent team, conceptualising, photography, retail visual merchandising, events and shows.

Tell us about your most recent project, in Singapore.

I organised and hosted my very first style event called STYLE CLIQUE. Style Clique was an event to make every fashionista’s dream come true with endless glamour for every girl, handpicked outfit of your dream that can be bought and makeup that is flawless with hair that oomphs up your style quotient. To sum up the lineup, the event started with a workshop: Fashion style by VL, Beauty tips for party make-up by Gayathri Menon, Designer Raye Padit and Wang Meng talking about their fashion story followed by beauty and hair makeover for all the guest.

Then each guest got ready and styled for the photo shoot . Indiestrings group covered the event . Those waiting for their turn had a chance to shop from designers across the globe that were all handpicked by VL.

What have you learned from mistakes you have made in the industry?

I would say, it is not easy convincing people to understand your style, no matter what, In the process of convincing a client, I lost. It has taught me to think positively and grow with the flow.

What challenges are you looking for in this creative consultant position?

Describe a typical work week for creative consultant position.

Brainstorming, brainstorming, brainstorming !!. Always looking for inspiration, ideas, researching visuals, networking to create teams for photoshoots, sourcing for clothes, designers, talents.

Coming up with briefs, meeting models, clients for collaborations or coming up with new things to do for next.

Tell us more about your current role as an official stylist pageant sponsor in Singapore.

Yes, it was a great pleasure and fun experience to help the contestant running for the Miss/Mrs India Expat Singapore. My role was simply to guide them to be confident with who they are and that can be showed just through a right sense of fashion style. But the best part was, being a creative stylist, I got a chance to pick my winners to help them go through a proper directed conceptualised shoot.

Tell us your most memorable experience as a creative consultant?

There are many indeed. I always have had fun doing my projects, especially photo shoot styling and direction. The recent most memorable experience is my event. It was all single-handedly organised, managed and hosted. This game taught me a lot in aspect to marketing, branding, PR, sales and getting all the vendors to be part of your event.

What advice could you give to the aspiring or amateur creative consultants out there?

Just enjoy and not crib about creative works, after all, it's your story and for people to visualise and see the whole image which reflects you.
