WHO SAID PINK IS FOR GIRLS AND BLUE IS FOR BOYS,'LETS RE-WRITE RULES' by Rubaya Tapiwanashe.

Thobey Cooper

is one of the most fast growing, fashion brands in Africa. This year the brand, showcased its latest Spring/Summer 21 collection for the second time at the SA Menswear Week which was hosted digital last month In an exclusive interview with Thobey Cooper,he provides more information to us about his collection . Also we find out, what makes one to become a successful designer. Q:Thobey Cooper thank you for your time and to allow us to interview you? A:Thank you so much I am honored and so happy to be part of the interview. Q: Congratulations on successful releasing your collection at the SAMW S/S 21. Who or which things were your inspiration while creating the whole collection? A:The collection that I showcased for SS21, is titled “Metanoia” which is a Greek term that basically means a process of change. My concept was based around the idea of educating society about the importance of equality and working towards a gender neutral world. We are slowly moving towards a 100% Gender Neutral Era where Gender rules and roles will be totally wiped out and I feel that it is very important for everyone to be educated on this, not just adults but children aswell so that they grow up accepting one another regardless of gender and preferences. Q: What according to you is your favourite part about the collection you presented? A:My favorite part of my design process is seeing my designs come to life from paper to actual garments , styling the looks and finally seeing them on models presenting the items on runway shows is just so magical , truly enjoy it.

Q: Blue,Pink are the main colours that you used for your in your fabrics. Why those colours? A: I used blue and pink as my main colours for my palette to highlight colours that are mainly connected to gender by society. We grow up believing that blue is for boys and pink for girls and that’s where we start having ideas, that’s where the “boxing” starts. Those “girls lines, boys lines” and school assembly sessions destroyed us. It is those little things we are taught while growing up, that cracked us into a world apart. In this collection I played with the colours celebrating personal preference and showing people that it’s okay to wear pink as a guy and blue as a girl. Let’s rewrite the rules.

Issue 26 / August 2020

Q: One of the most important elements in a such event are models. What's your comment in terms of models whom you worked with ? A:Models play a very important role in fashion. They help bring a designer’s narrative to life. In this show like any other Thobey Cooper showcase, I used feminine looking male models to help embrace the garments as well as used lipstick on all 10 models to create a connection between the looks and the models , making them seem and look as one. Q: This is not your first time showcasing at the SA Mens Wear Week.Last year you debuted 'Where we started' collection, what was difference about this show excluding it being digital? A:Yes this was my second SAMW week , it was so exciting as if it was my first. Showcased under lockdown meant having a different feel to the show. Going digital meant paying attention to detail more than ever. I had the opportunity to work with a smaller team giving me an opportunity to have control on everything happening on set and being able to interact with everyone involved. With This show we reached bigger numbers than normal and received such amazing feedback from people. I also believe that I have improved as a designer when it comes to my craft , this collection will definitely be remembered by many for years to come.

be inspired but do not copy what other creatives are doing. Own it, and don’t tweak your work in order to fit society’s expection , let them fall in love with what you have to offer as a brand. Q: After such a successful event. What do you do,to make sure you relax? A:After a busy and successful event , I always make sure I go home and rest , no after party for me, Lol (laugh out loud). I always take a day or 2 off before shooting the range and doing promotional work. Q: Lastly what is next for you and your brand? A:What’s next for the Thobey Cooper brand, is launching an easy ready y purchase range that consumers will be able to buy online and in studio. Am also planning on showing in other cities and countries in The new year, with hopes that the pandemic will ease. And loads and loads of other exciting projects which I cannot share now, but definitely keep checking thobeycooper_ on Instagram where I’ll be sharing everything BY RUBAYA TAPIWA

Q: What skills according to you are necessary for a successful fashion designers? A: Hustling skills , LoL (laughing out loud) if that’s even a skill. As a fashion designer you have to have the Necessary basic skills to plan and execute your collection, being able to stand back and edit your work to make sure you present something You have put all your effort into. You need to be very patient and focused on who you are and what you wanna be known for as a designer , watch and

Little things in Life matter by Amon Tangwena

If

you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task. Doing little things in life, helps you to get bigger things done. Another task only comes when you do the first task. By the end of the day, one task completed, will end up in many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter, if you can't do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. If by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that's made, that you made. And made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. In life every task have to be completed inorder to get the results you want. You can't develop the energy for bigger things if you can't do the small things. To be a soldier, you have to spend months in training, to be a doctor, you have to spend years learning and training. All things require discipline, if you can't have the discipline to do little things that matters in life, definitely success will not be your portion. Success is like a portion of chicken or pork, if you want to enjoy it, you have to cook it. By sweeping your room everyday, you know that you have to do something in life. You can't live and do nothing. God did not create you to be idle but it's a choice. If you want to change the world start by each day with a task completed. Stop doubting yourself, don't be a slave of selfdoubt. Believe in yourself, your gift can make a difference. Your duty now is to unwrap your precious gift.

You Must Unwrap Your Gift

Just because it is not reviewed yet, it doesn't mean that content inside you is not priceless, it's priceless. Release what's inside you, never let people speak negative about your gift anymore because it's precious. Don't just be a person who is just existing without using your potential. Unwrap your gift today.

For how long are you going to stay with the book that's on the inside of you, the poem inside you, the great cook inside you. You just have to unwrap your gift. It's now time to develop what God placed inside you, don't let it die undeveloped. Your gift needs development. You were in a season of developing your gift, someone came and spoke division or spoke doubt to you. You started judging yourself comparing yourself to someone else, when they have worked on their gift and you were just developing your gift. Don't stop developing your gift. Because you wouldn't be what you thought you will be, when you saw them you stopped. Stop living according to people's perceptions. Because you didn't get the support you wanted, you felt like you should stop developing that gift inside you. Unwrap what's inside you, it's crying for development. This is the season that what God placed on you, should come out of you. Don't be too cool to use your gift, your gift is there to change the world. Because you are uneducated it doesn't mean that you can't develop your gift. You just need to change your personality inorder to fulfill your purpose. Learn about your gift, go in a place where you can cultivate what God placed inside you. It's now time to develop and use your gift. Change the way you used to think about your gift today.

Your gift, is the big investment that you should make. You must grow and water your gift today, it must bear some fruits. Your gift needs you inorder to manifest to the world. Don't settle for less than you are capable of living whilst you have a gift. You must now unwrap your gift, it's time for you to rise. You must use your gift, don't do less about your gift because it is inside you to change your life. Let your gift come out, unlock the doors to let it come outside. You can sing well, what's stopping you to go to the studio and try something. You have good postures etc why don't you develop yourself into a model. Your gift must not die because of ignorance. It's now time to unwrap your gift. Fear must not stop you to unwrap your gift. You have a great potential to do wonders but don't give attention to fear. You must not give the steering to fear, it must not be your driver. What you want to achieve must drive you. Unwrapping your gift is the best thing to do now. Never doubt yourself that you can make it. Your gift is a hidden treasure inside you, search for it and unwrap it. Don't blame anyone for not developing your gift because you are the one to start developing your gift. Your gift is valuable to you, don't let anyone tell you it's not worth. Your gift needs you, unwrap you. Sir AmoN TangwenA Business Mentor and Life Coach. Leader and Co-founder of New BeginninG MovemenT. 0776 921 787 Creating A Realm Of PossibilitieS
