Her dream in become part of models who are granted and opportunity to catwalk in an international ramp came true when she took part at the Fashion Without Borders JHB on the 26th of March. The event was attended by International designers from across the African continent, who exhibited their designers virtual. Phumla described the event as being extra-ordinary and it’s ,setting of the event being unique. She further said, technology played a big role in making the show itnto a success as they [the model],were given an opportunity to shine in front of the international audiences who were able to watch them from their homes. Catwalking across the ramp despite their presences wasn’t there in the auditorium. The show was hosted digital, as one of the policies In the preventing the spread of the COVID 19 pandemic. MEET THE NEWLY CORONOTED MISTER ALBINISM ZIMBABWE

K

udakwashe Gondo was appointed the newly Mister Albinism Zimbabwe this month. The newly appointed Mister Albinism Zimbabwe, interacted with our journalist Tapiwanashe Rubaya, about his experience in the ramp battling for the position of being Mister Africa International. He also informs us more about some of the roles that his planning to make as Mister Albinism Zimbabwe. Q:What will be your first aim as Mister Albinism? A:My first aim as Mr Albinism Zimbabwe 2021 is we are approaching the IAAD International Albinism Awareness Day which is one of the biggest events in the calendar currently mobilization of resources for the event is in progress and we are appealing to organizations and individuals to take part and support the initiative as the event is slated for Saturday 12 June 2021 . Q:One of the main challenges that is faced by the Albinism community is descrimination by the public. How do you think that should be solved ? A:Personally I feel there is no difference between PWA and the rest of the community yes we have some challenges we face but that should not deter the public from viewing the PWA as equals as a solution most people with Albinism including myself we are advocating for equal opportunities in the economic and social spheres the challenges being raised by PWA should be heard and met. Q:Let’s take you to the time when you were in Pageant, did you ever thought that you will be announced as the winner? A:You know with everyone we always have this hope of winning or making it when we take up a challenge this being a national pageant most people turned up for it and meaning more

competition which becomes a challenge I was so determined to win I had to put out my all for it due to challenges of Covid 19 it delayed the main event of which I almost felt like not continuing at the time I had friends who were on my neck saying I shouldn’t give up I had a equal chance of winning the day before the event we met as contestants for rehearsals I met most of the guys I blended in and then I realized there was no going back I told myself this is the last push put your all if you win you win you loose you got a better chance next time So there is an incident that happened when the top ten was called apon during the event my name was not called when the judges called the male contestants top 5 back stage there was me and the other guy I was hoping they just say number 4 then making it to the top 10 is a better achievement after all so am great full that I made it Q:You are the first model from the city of Bulawayo to win the title what do you think it means for the city? A:Well am the first Male because 2019 Ayanda Sibanda was the winner as she was crowned the Miss Albinism Zimbabwe 2019 but overly being the first time to do it and win and be the first Male in Bulawayo to bring the title here is a great achievement for me am still excited and I hope it will inspire a whole lot of males and females as well the city of Bulawayo was dominant this year as most of the female contestants

were part of the pageant and Nancy Mkandla made it as the first Princess also representing Bulawayo. Q:Besides pageantry do you have any plans in jumping to other types of modelling? A:Am a big fan of music and I can’t spend a day with out listening to music and I look up to AKA the South African hip hop star he has many critics in his career and he still stands tall his music his dressing and achievements he has made are an inspiration to me and am sure one day will get to meet and talk to him. Q:Who is your Inspiration ? A:Am a big fan of music and I can’t spend a day with out listening to music and I look up to AKA the South African hip hop star he has many critics in his career and he still stands tall his music his dressing and achievements he has made are an inspiration to me and am sure one day will get to meet and talk to him. Q:What paved your way to take part in Mister Albinism Zimbabwe ? A:Am someone who has had hopes of making it to the media industry although modelling was not something I considered am always out to challenge myself and when this opportunity to take part came I took it as a challenge but as time went by I realized that there was more to it than just competing and trying to win it was more of an awareness to the public that we as P A G E

PWA can take up any challenge that people can take that we can do things on our own all we require are opportunities and the awareness doesn’t stop as am going to work hard and brake the barriers and continue advocating for equality Q:The male modelling industry has been facing a number of challenges, especially when it comes to recognition what do you think should be done to solve that? A:That is very true the industry has turned to be biased on Female modelling industry more I believe that there can be the creation of equal space for both male and female opportunities I will give you for example Ms Albinism Zimbabwe Trust is working with both male and female modelling and giving them opportunities to actually get the public eye as they are grooming the contestants of the pagaent even after they hold these pagaents. My name is Leeroy Kudakwashe Gondo I am from Bulawayo currently am a undergraduate student studying for my bachelor’s degree in Local governance studies at Great Zimbabwe University, also a visual artist I do fine art am the most friendliest person you will ever meet lol . I am talkative in a good way though because I always want to keep the people around me entertained and laughing you can interact with me on Facebook Leeroy Kudakwashe Gondo Twitter @leeroykgondo

Do you think that farmers are hustlers or entrepreneurs?

A

ll farmers are superman. They play a big role in our lives and it is very hard to eliminate them. I would like you to think about this , are you able to spend a couple of days without food in your stomach, applying skin lotion on your body, wearing clothes or sleeping without blankets at night? Can you keep up? Bear this in your mind that farming is one of the best business to venture ~ it is more than sewing seeds on the ground and waiting for the crops to grow. Profit has to be made at the end of the day. There are two different types of farming which are rearing of livestock and growing of crops. Business goes beyond making money. This beg this question, why all of the farmers are not the same? If you take a look closely, you would find out that they are located in the same region, using same inputs and receiving the same volume of rainfall but there will be a huge difference on their output. A hustler is a someone who provides product for free or sale without improving the product. Ultimately, their characteristic is to have fast money and quick results without going extra mile. For example, subsistence farmers produce grains for their own consumption, nothing more to add on the product. On the other hand, entrepreneurs is someone who venture into business with a new product or he modify the existing product in a unique way. The good part about entrepreneurs is that they do not just do jump into business without doing a proper

research or meeting the need of the customers. Of course, entrepreneur is a problem solver. This is what makes them to be outstanding by adding value to the product. As a result of this, it prolongs the life span of human beings and animals as well as protects our precious environment. Lets assume that you have had a great harvest of strawberries in your field. Do not make a mistake to sell your products direct to the market. There is a high risk of getting less turnover because you will be selling a semi ~ processed products. Why cannot you convert strawberries into jam. Stretch a bit further by adding value on your ultimate product. It opens a gateway for packaging and branding and establishing a good name for the company. In a nut shell, a business is not a business until it meets the demands of the customers by adding immeasurable value on whatever product you can produce. We are living in an environment that requires more entrepreneurs than hustlers simply because this is the only way we can solve the problem of unemployment , poverty and hunger in our nations. Hustlers have limited capacity to make the impact on this world because they are only capable to feed themselves. Author's Profile Kudakwashe T Muganu is a writer, author, university student, young entrepreneur, fitter and turner by profession.

I am a woman with a big heart; I am an able woman. My body doesn't dene me but what's within me does. Shapes and sizes do not matter, a good heart and the inner person does. I have a big body which I'm proud of and I'm proud to say that I'm plus size. Societies have to accept a plussize women and not push her into discomfort. Why sideline plussize women when they can do all things like any of you? Why kill her condence with hurtful criticism and constant mockery as if she chose to be like that? Okay then, after she becomes depressed and you go on to say that, ..she is a disturbed woman.., when you are the cause of it all; then she commits suicide and kills herself because she cannot take the abuse anymore and you say, ..she is crazy...

Need Help?

Big people bodied young woman do not have confidence in themselves many can do great but the greatness is never let out because of:

1. Lack of confidence 2. Fear of being mocked 3. Fear of being judged without even showing they've got to show 4. Being looked down on 5. Lack of support And other factors I know of three Ladies who committed suicide simply because they faced consistent mockery and criticism about being a plus size

I lost a friend a day before yesterday because of this same issue her boyfriend said a lot and when I say I a lot a mean A LOT insulting her and so on so she took termic and poison and she died. She has always felt bad about her body and growing up she faced these challenges of being made fun of so all she needed was someone to talk to and someone to support her and be there for her and I wasn't there for her as I was supposed to. So I know a lot of plus size Young woman young Ladies out there have the same problem or even worse and many have so much to show the world but the don't cause they don't believe in themselves I know starting this won't bring my friend back but I know I might help someone so I just wanna be a shoulder to those people I know it won't be easy but I'm willing to help. So I'm starting something for the plus size young woman to help them see themselves worthy rather than shying away from the world or committing suicide because of being big or being mocked due to their beautiful size.

Dermacko INTERVIEW BY TAPIWA RUBAYA

Demarcko derives from Jamaica, when he came to Zimbabwe he had no idea that he was going to be part of Africa’s modeling industry. With encouragement coming from family and friends,Hope was not lost in Demarcko .He kept his faith high as he believes that his destined to be one of the ‘A’ listers in Africa’s modeling industry

Q:When did you took a decision that your next step was being a model? A:It was Last year November after after Prom.

adjust ouroutlook on modules just as the word is changing. Q:You original roots are traced not in Africa but in the Central part of America, how has your roots played a role in your modelling career ? A:Well back at home I’m the only one who took this path to be a model we 12 in total 3 girls and the rest are boys some of my siblings are at school .The rest are working but they all got it under control ,I’m the only one who decided to be different i didn’t want to be statistic.

Q:What are the obstacles that you faced after you made the decision ? A:My friends didn’t believe I could do it and used to laugh at me saying I wasn’t capable of doing something and that I never stick to one thing for instance. I’m always going out ,even my mom told me once that it was a bad idea and after all she didn’t see any career coming from the modelling sector but now she does and is happy.

Q: International and regional shows are starting to take part as the world was under lockdown due to COVID 19, International which shows would you like to attended?A:The shows I would pick is to attend New York fashion week and would love to be on that runway. I would also like to attend the Paris fashion week like recently i was given a offer by fabiani collection but i declined it.Q:How has joining CFM models changed your life? A:Joining CfM has shown different specters of modeling. It has changed my life in fact, that has exposed me more to different people in this industry who all have one goal. And its changed my life by helping me grow as a person and as a model its made me more responsible and more accommodative of others. I’ve learned not to judge others as well.

Q:Where do you believe your modelling career is taking you in the next coming years ? A:I would like to do more runway modeling and even commercial modeling. The reason behind this is because I want it to expose me to different markets. Q:The industry has been facing a number of challenges with many believing that being muscular is another, attribute that defines a model (what’s your comment on that)? A: I think personally that world is evolving each and everyday and it would be unfair if we stick to the same norms of a model must be a certain type of way» its the same way in which in the female modeling industry we now have plus sized models. Short models and petite models so my take is we have to

Forced to change goals and plans you set aside by circumstances is not easy...h aving to postpone a lot of ac tivities is so disappointing but sometimes you just have to accept it...

Colleta Any challenges you are facing in Zim modeling industry you feel which needs attention of government or corporate world?

sexual exploitation and abuse of young people especially those still ne w in the industr y. I think what our government can do is what the y should avoid, the y should introduce a legislation that seek to protect models by requiring all modeling agencies to be licensed by the state - 24 -
