How was did you feel winning the pageant

I felt excited and nervous but mostly I was over the moon.

Now that you have won what’s next I’ll be doing fundraising and more community work. Fundraising for my international trip.

Do you know what you would want to studying college one day? I want to do media studies or Tourism

Would you change your name if you could?

I wouldn’t change my name; it was given to me with pride and joy by my parents

What was the happiest moment of your life so far?

GABRIELA GONTHIER HEADS TO MISS UNIVERSE

We caught up with Miss Universe Seychelles 2022 and we had an interview with her. What was the starting point of your desire to compete at Miss Universe?

I think it’s amazing that I manifested my title of Miss Universe Seychelles. During the Miss Seychelles pageant I was asked what I would do if I didn’t win, I told the jury if I didn’t win I would never Be discouraged if the opportunity was mind I would surpass any obstacle. I mentioned that perhaps the universe was calling me and that I could be the second delegate to attain the title of Miss Universe Seychelles. Two years later I was appointed this title and I have

been ever so grateful and honoured to have this title.

The last time Seychelles competed at Miss Universe was in 1995 and now you are the 2nd representative… How does this make you feel?

Being the 2nd representative is an honour. As previously mentioned I count my blessings. It is one for the books this is one of the many achievements I’m ever so proud of and l’m thrilled I could be selected hence why I’m humble to be the 2nd miss universe Seychelles

List of other Pageants you have competed and won in?

In 2018 I competed in Miss

Regatta where I won and became Miss Regatta 2018

In 2020 l competed in Miss Seychelles where l was amongst the top 6 finalists

In 2021 I was appointed as Miss University Africa Seychelles and competed in Miss University Africa in Nigeria to win the second major crown which was Miss University Africa Tourism. It was the first major crown to be brought to Seychelles from a continental pageant.

In June 2022 I was appointed Miss Universe Seychelles where in January 14th 2023 I will be competing at Miss Universe

Despite your dream to be a beauty pageant winner, you have

a degree in International Business. Was it for a Plan B in life?

I have a degree in International Business. Education has never been plan B for me it’s always been Plan A. Mandela and Mugabe are leaders that placed emphasis on education their ideologies inspired my quench for education. A masters is part of future, I’m not sure when or what I’ll study but I’m definitely sure I’ll be doing my masters.

As women, you face a lot of bias and battles even in your daily lives. Is there any experience you would like to share?

I count my blessings coming from Seychelles a small island that pushes fiercely for the rights of women. Women are breadwinners just like men in Seychelles. I’m aware that many women around the world face a lot of obstacles. One

of the challenges I face that perhaps is not as evident is constantly proving I can do the job, I can get it done. I do have the competencies and capacities, I am not just a pretty face but I am a devoted, ambitious woman that when I put my mind to it I can achieve anything a man can equally do.

How do you deal with the pressure of competition?

The pressure will always be there but I always compare myself to a diamond they are made under extreme pressures. I know myself my values and beliefs anything that aligns to that and helps me grow I will always welcome it with an open heart. Aside from that my faith and family are my greatest strengths and support systems when things get tough

MKHWANAZI MISS WORLD DIVERSITY 2022

She started modeling at the age of 14, At that time she did not have a role model as modeling wasn’t something she imagined herself doing She was pushed you into modeling by her primary school teacher (Maths) she saw her height and she would continuously tell her she should become a model but because she loved sports she wouldn’t pay attention to it, it got to a point where the teacher involved Precious’ parents into this matter and she made means of finding her an Agency and sponsoring her.

When we asked her what she has learnt from pageantry so far, she said “I have learnt to love myself even more, I have learnt that pageantry is not about Beauty. Pageantry has taught me how to engage with people.

Also, I have learnt Perseverance and resilience. A lot of work goes into competing for a pageant and it might get hard sometimes or things might not go your way, but it teaches you to keep going and work through problems. There are so many things i have learnt not only about myself, but also about communication skills, leadership, interviews, and poise! Pageantry is a doorway for those who want to be on stage, give back, and of course learn more about themselves!

In the next few years Precious sees herself as an independent woman, someone who will bring change in my community. She also sees herself becoming the woman she has always wanted to be Precious lives by the motto “Take every step with confidence understand how

GET TO KNOW DIPUO MALEKA

GET TO KNOW DIPUO MALEKA

I am Dipuo Maleka, a 20 years old lady born and bred in Limpopo, in a city of Polokwane, in Ga-Mmakata.

I attended my primary days in Mmakata Primary School and went to Chakga Senior Secondary for my high school days. In 2020 I finished my matric and went to further my studies at the University of South Africa.

I have certificates for being an SRC member at Lebopo Circuit, being a top learner in grade 11 and 12, being an SRC student in grade 10 and also being the president of my school in grade 11.

I am currently a second year LLB student at the University of South Africa.

My love and passion about this qualification are the ones that drives me to keep moving even when I’ve got all reasons to give. The burning desire to give justice to those who need it, and to give legal advices to those who are not really aware of legal consequences!

My hobbies are modelling, and reading.

I started modelling in 2019, and from there I couldn’t resist my love for it. To me it’s more than

22 • Model Guide Issue 52

glitz and glamor, it’s about being a voice to the voiceless and also be a helping hand to those in need. Not forgetting being a good example to the young generation that everything it’s possible when you set your mind to.

My love for reading is something I have been doing ever since I can remember, that’s where I get knowledge and wisdom. With knowledge, you remain teachable yet unbreakable because knowledge is POWER.

My biggest strength is creativity. Give me anything, I will definitely blow your mind!

Communication and leadership are also a cherry on top, I guess being an SRC during my high school days really shaped me into who I am today. I believe a true leader is that one who leads with ambition, goal, vision, loyalty and confidence, that, I am.

I am inspired by black consciousness because I believe that where my power and history is as a Black African woman.

I am also inspired by Ubuntu because I know I am who I am because of others and I know if the spirit of Ubuntu can be our major concern as humans, the world will be a better place for all of us-to know it takes a whole village to raise a kid.

I also draw my inspiration from everyday life experiences, what happens In my life everyday should inspire me to be a better person tomorrow.

I have my own blog called SHE’speaks where I write about everyday events that we take lightly and not really aware of how much they affect us. Events such as gender inequality, GBV, teenage pregnancy, toxic femininity and masculinity.

KUDZAYI TRUST CHIKODZO MISTER GLAMOUR ZIMBABWE FINALIST

1. WHO ARE YOU?

Kudzayi Trust Chikodzo is a 26 year old from the dusty little town of Rusape. A jack of many trades who works as a freelancer in the technology industry. A firm believer in the power of the digital revolution as an avenue to effect progressive change, which is how he got started with advocacy in the cyber space. And like everybody else he does enjoy a decent TV show, listening to music and watching sports; I would not go

as far as calling myself a reader but I do read widely.

Model Guide Issue 52. 29

3. Challenges you have faced as the semifinalist

It takes getting used to more people knowing you and that has affected me mentally but I’m grateful for the support system I have otherwise I would have crumbled under the pressure.

There’s also the issue of being seen as a sexual object as soon as you introduce yourself as a model and being labelled as being promiscuous among other stereotypes and that also can take a toll on one’s emotional and

mental well-being. People should see models as human beings with feelings, before anything else.

4. What would you do if you win the pageant

I will continue to advocate and lobby for mental wellness, gender equality and basic human rights for everyone in their diversity.

I intend to use my then-acquired influence and reach to increase awareness on mental health and help reduce the stigma behind seeking mental health care oth-

erwise young black people will keep on relying on dangerous coping mechanisms like drug abuse; we can’t keep on losing our loved ones to suicide because of ignorance.

I have worked with organizations like Amnesty International and Youth Gate Zimbabwe and I intend to work with more organizations as we fight to end gendered violence and discrimination against key and vulnerable populations by amplifying their voices.

5. What have you learnt from the pageant so far

I have learned so many things about my weaknesses which is a good thing because selfawareness is an important step towards self-actualization. I have also learned a lot about etiquette, communication skills, leadership and poise.

At what age did you start Modeling

I started modeling at the age of 18

Why did you start Modeling

I have always been passionate about Modeling. But my parents never allowed me, l convinced them that it’s a talent just like any other. Apart from that a lot of people have always asked “if I’m a model?” And when l say “no”, they have always suggested me to try it. And that’s because of my height.

Who was/is your role model?

My role model is Steve Harvey

Besides modeling what else do you do?

I’m an entrepreneur

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

I believe that, once you start something, the universe conspires to make it happen. It doesn’t happen over night, it’s something that you have to work hard on. Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have. I’m seeing myself big and better in the next five years. I will be exactly where l want to be.

If you could change one thing about Modeling what could it be?

Modeling is a career just like any other. We need to get paid. The pay is not to good. Very few models can ever count on modeling as a full time occupation to support them. You’ve got your basic supermodel who does well. But more times as not many models use what money they get to go to college, or they end up getting married. As l overhead one model say that by the time you’re 30 you’ve either moved onto clothing design or your running cash register at the local drug store.

How do you deal with the pressures of modeling.

On pressures before a pageant l make sure that l start buying my outfits before the day has approached, because if the day is drawing near l might not get the money to do all this and also l practice a lot even before l have a pageant because l need to also stay ready for the competition and improve my skills

As on ladies issue the pressure is very very high but l manage to control it by practising self control and considering them as my sister’s And on pressures of people : l don’t give them a chance to control my life and to make decisions for me cause people always talk and they do talk on their side not considering my side so the best thing that l saw was to ignore what they say if it is a bad influence and take only the good part and continue with my career
