Congratulations to our city for earning Music City of the Year, a topic we expand on in the Arts section. The Modern Travel side explores Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Antigua and St.Augustine, Florida and our Motoring section brings you expert reviews on five new cars.

I’ve often said that Mississauga is regrettably overlooked for our bustling music scene, filled with remarkable musicians and artists for geographic-only reasons. Specifically, we’re next door to Toronto, a longtime hub of music. That’s all changed with our marvellous city earning the distinction of being the 2023 Music City of the Year, as awarded by the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA) and Canadian Music Week (CMW).

A major factor is sharply attributed to establishing a solid Music Strategy, with a goal of positioning Mississauga as an incubator for musical talent and to become national destination for live music, events, and festivals.

In it’s seventh year, the Canadian Live Music Industry Awards brings together the Canadians behind live music for a night of celebration and recognition. The awards celebrate the ingenuity, perseverance and excellence demonstrated by live music companies, individuals and organizations over the past year. Finalists and awards are based on a vote by workers in the live music industry. The 2023 awards were presented during a ceremony held on June 9.

Demetrius Nath, the Founder of Mississauga Music, says “We are thrilled to finally see this kind of industry attention for Mississauga. There has been a lot of people chipping away behind the scenes for years now and this recognition is a much needed boost in our morale, indicating we are moving in the right direction. Mississauga Music is happy to have played a small part in this success & we plan to forge ahead so that these types of milestones are the norm for our city!”

“It is an honour to receive this award! This award showcases the strides we’re making. Our city is already home to world-class, diverse musicians and wonderful live music, but through continued efforts and investments in this sector, we are unlocking even greater economic and social benefits.” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

In 2022, Mississauga unveiled their debut Music Strategy: 20222026, which outlines 32 actions over the next five years to support the growth and development of Mississauga’s music industry. The four pillars are: amplifying Mississauga’s artists, creating a favourable environment for live music, supporting underrepresented people and groups and celebrating Mississauga’s history and success.

What’s the criteria to earn a Music City of Year award?

The winning city has to make a demonstrated commitment to leveraging the power of live music locally, to rebuild, recover and grow thanks to live music. With our music scene ever-evolving with both emerging and existing talent, Mississauga has earned this; let’s keep composing the next score of our musical journey.

THE 2023 GREAT OUTDOORS COMEDY

In conversation with Brennan McFaul, Vice-President Trixstar Entertainment, on Canada’s hilarious and innovative Great Outdoors Comedy Festival (GOCF) In only their third year, they’ve made significant forward strides and are now appearing in four cities for 2023.

1. Congrats on the expansion in 2023; how did you decide which cities to bring on board this year?

Going coast to coast in year 3 of the festival is crazy to think. We have been blessed with tremendous local and regional stakeholders in each market. Without their support and

excitement, the expansion likely would not have happened as quickly as it did. We knew we wanted to be coast to coast, but doing it in year 3 has been a rewarding endeavour. There are always a bunch of factors we look at when strategizing for our next expansion. Community and tourism support, beautiful outdoor space, stake holder excitement are some of the things we look at. Also, is the community an advocate for the arts, are they supportive of the arts and does their event calendar have room for another major event during the Summer. Summer is short and incredibly valuable in Canada, we know many communities have packed calendars during that time, so is there room for us to fit in and make it a success for everyone involved.

2. What was the highlight for 2022? Watching Calgary embrace the festival in one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in Canada (Prince’s Island Park) was definitely the highlight.

3. 2023 has some strong names across the lineup - was it easier getting these names for 2023 after the success of 2022? Yes and no. There is more brand recognition, trust and familiarity with the concept as far as artists, major agencies and management firms go, but you are still dealing with complexities for this level of artists. Navigating personal and professional schedules, how long since they have been in that market, future plans for that market, tour deals with larger promoters, availability on that specific day…these are some of the questions and challenges that come up before a lineup is finalized. It is easier since year 1 or 2 in some regards, but it will always be a puzzle trying to get all the pieces to fit. The pieces that are hard to fit really make you appreciate the ones that fit easily. Bill Burr, Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, Tom Segura, David Spade, Whitney Cummings, Chelsea Handler, Theo Von. These are some of the biggest names in comedy that we have had

the privilege of working with. They all have no shortage of opportunities to perform and although we are paying them, money is only part of it. We are humbled they chose us and continue to choose us, with several artists having performed multiple times with us in different markets.

4. What will be different in 2023 opposed to 2022 for guests?

The overall improvements we make each year. These improvements are made across the festival from artist lineups and scheduling, marketing, ticketing, seating and site layout, VIP offerings, communications etc. It is a very complex project and it’s never going to be perfect, but we listen to the fans, to our stake holders, to the artists, to our partners and to our staff to keep improving so it is the best and most successful experience for everyone involved. We want to make it consistent and positive wherever that you are attending. We also hired the

face of the festival, Rudy the Raccoon, who has been making his way into the public eye more. He will get a bigger reveal onsite at this year’s GOCF.

5. How would you describe the GOCF to someone who's never attended?

In our first year, headliner David Spade referred to it as “Canada’s biggest picnic” and “like a giant outdoor comedy club” because of how we sell tickets at tables with food and beverage service right to your seat. Canada doesn't have a large outdoor amphitheater system like the US, so we find the best outdoor spot in each market and build a festival site. We want to build these sites and days out with multiple artists and a fun vibe with festival elements where everyone can enjoy the festival! The vision is and will always be to create an inclusive and safe experience that celebrates and features all forms of performance comedy, from locals

to superstars. All while celebrating and supporting the communities and beautiful parks we visit.

6. What's the most impactful lesson you've learned from 2022's performances?

If you build it, they will come. Meaning, if you build it right with the right partners in the right place, then people will come. We must never stop improving. We started in 2021, which was a tremendously hard and uncertain time in the events and entertainment industry, and have been fortunate enough to mostly recover from that. The lessons learned and growth that has happened since year 1 are too many to list; we are grateful to still be doing this, giving back to the communities who host us and having people embrace the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival everywhere we go! greatoutdoorscomedyfestival.com

Along Interstate 81’s corridor lays the Shenandoah Valley, a hidden gem that’s brimming with adventure, nature, excitement, arts and culture, history, food, drink and waiting for you to discover.

Balancing quaint cities and towns with marvellous mountain views, small town charm and warm welcomes, the Shenandoah Valley balances them beautifully. I’ve detailed my recent experience from north to south, that balances attractions, dining and lodgings. If you’re doing a road trip, it’s only an eight hour drive from Mississauga to Winchester to start your adventure. If you prefer to fly, it’s a short flight from Pearson to Washington Dulles, where you can rent a car. Whichever medium you choose, there’s so much to explore.Take your time through the Valley as each destination is special with its own unique offerings and atmosphere. With that, l’m excited to share how I spent five fun-filled days in this stunning part of Virginia and hope that it inspires you to go.

Winchester

Bonnie Blue Southern Market & Bakery

Southern cooking is at its finest here in this repurposed gas station, complete with hundreds of vintage license plates. The plates from the kitchen are loaded with authentic southern comfort food from biscuits and gravy to smoked beef brisket to chicken and waffles. They also won 2022 Small Business Of The Year!

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley

With the valley bathed in rich history, this museum is a focal point for knowledge and boasts seven acres of gorgeous and gracefully designed gardens. This cultural centre hosts various events and is a key hub to the Valley.

Patsy Cline Historic House

Country music’s key contributor, Patsy Cline, had a house here and its now is a lovely attraction in town. There are letters, clothing, historical artifacts and a true piece of music history.

George Washington Hotel

Recharge at the central and elegant George Washington Hotel, which blends modern and historic design, complete with a beautiful brick courtyard retro US Mail Letterbox.

While you’re there, visit the very walkable Old Town area, complete with shops, murals and small-town charm that photographs quite well.

Woodstock

Woodstock Brew House

50ish km/30-ish miles southbound brings you to wonderful Woodstock and with a couple of turns, to a repurposed clothing factory, now home to the Woodstock Brew House. There’s quite the selection of in-house brewed beer on tap, live entertainment, fabulous food and an electric atmosphere.

Seven Bends State Park

With eight miles of hiking trails, enjoy the outdoors and as you meander, be sure to cross the walking bridge over the Shenandoah River for a unique perspective.

Muse Vineyards

Housed on Serendipity Lane, Muse Vineyards is a multiple award-winning winery with sprawling views and wonderful wine options, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Rose, and Petit Verdot.

The Edinburg Mill houses a broad collection of relics from decades gone by, including a full model train set of the area, a hot air balloon, bicycles, a carriage, typewriters, household items Red Cross paraphernalia, and a moonshine still, to name a few.

In New Market, Southern Kitchen will replace all the calories you lost during the day…but in the most delicious way. Nearing seven decades of serving southern classics, be sure to get here.

I encourage you to enjoy an early dinner so that you can soak up some of the serenity of the Skyline

Drive. Spanning 105 miles, this scenic drive weaves through the Blue Ridge Mountains, generously offering panoramic views, lookouts, wildlife and as someone who’s driven over a million km’s, it’s a slice of heaven.

Near the middle of Skyline Drive is Skyland Resort, where you can enjoy peace, quiet and nature throughout. Bonus points go to the Pollock Dining Room that adds an extra serving of Valley views.

Luray Caverns

Head 40 minutes westward to the astonishing Luray Caverns and then literally head south into these caverns, which are the largest in the Eastern US. The breathtaking ancient formations are enchanting and haunting. My highlight was Dream Lake as it creates a perfect reflection of these stunning stalactites. Each collection has its own name and you’ll be taking pictures for likely the entire 2 km pathway.

Harrisonburg

Mashita

45 minutes southbound brings you to Harrisonburg and be sure to experience the state’s first culinary district, specifically at Mashita. Specializing in farm-to-table and from-scratch Korean delights, this is a key anchor dining-wise.

Virginia Quilt Museum

Here, you’ll find three floors of history and culture stitched together woven across a variety of quilts, each with a unique story to share.

Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center

Learn the history of how the Brethren Mennonites shared lives for over 200 years, their history and an authentically decked out barn.

Sage Bird Ciderworks

Using locally sourced fruit, this quaint and high quality cider is brewing with excitement and community togetherness. Owned by the lively and lovely Amberlee and Zach Carlson, it’s easy to feel at home here, especially with a delightful drink in hand.

Ridge Room at the Hyatt Place

If only all hotel restaurants brought such sweeping Valley views… The Ridge Room is on the top floor of the Hyatt Place and their outdoor sky view patio heightens the dining experience.

Massanutten Resort

Lodging-wise, there are condo-style options at this massive 6,000 acre resort, so whether it’s friends and or family, there’s plenty of space.You can stay on the mountain or in the Valley! It’s easy to stay active here between golf, zip lining, tubing, mountain biking, hiking, and the huge water park. There’s also an array of winter sports to make it a true year round destination. Throw in farm-to-table dining and you’ve got the complete package here.

Crozet Tunnel

A former abandoned train tunnel that’s nearly 200 years old, this 1.3 km tunnel has an aura of intrigue even in daylight. To get there, it’s a beautiful 3 km hike and worth every step.

This certified organic kombucha brewery is award-winning with a small footprint and serves up creative flavours.

Havoc House

It’s exactly what it’s named as! Whether it’s axe throwing or romping through the rage room, break some stuff in a safe space.

Ox-Eye Vineyards & Ballerino Creamery

Bringing a wine and cheese tasting together is quite the pairing, especially when you get a detailed history on both simultaneously. It’s no surprise these wines are award-winning after tasting them.

American Shakespeare Center

The world’s only modernized yet historically accurate version of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre has performed all of his 38 plays. This Elizabethan theatre sees visitors from around the globe and spectators aren’t disappointed. Try and sit on the balcony in the middle for the best views.

Zynodoa Restaurant

A savoury first date that lasts a lifetime blending southern style food in a modern world is what you’ll find here. Primarily farm-to-table, this simple yet superb menu is loaded with great eats.

There’s a short, moderately challenging hike to get there but once you do, it’s worth it. This Dark Sky Park is truly a state gem and should be on your must-experience list.

WHERE OLD WORLD CHARM MEETS NEW FUN

At 458 years of age, St. Augustine prides itself on being the oldest city in the U.S. It also wants you to know that it’s full of fun. Tucked into the northeast corner of Florida’s historic east coast, it would be easy to miss if you were barrelling down I 95 headed to a theme park or to collapse under the scorching sun.

The travel brochure promised beautiful weather, great music, fascinating history, fabulous food and drink, pristine beaches and outdoor fun. We decided a visit was in order, on the theory that stops along the way can create a vacation’s best memories.

Here are a few of the highlights from a weekend stopover last spring.

1) Old Town Trolley Tour

The 90-minute trolley tour through the historic district with 22 hop-on-hop-off stops is a delightful way to get a feel for the area and your bearings. The tour guide kept us entertained with historical anecdotes, fun facts and stories behind the attractions along the way.

2) Explore and shop historic downtown

The oldest part of the city, with buildings that date to the 1700s is fully walkable and bursting at the seams with rich history and stunning Spanish and Moorish revival architecture. Plenty of art galleries, vintage and antique shops, clothing boutiques, jewellery and souvenir stores make for shopping nirvana. Not to overlook – Flagler College and the unconventional Lightner Museum, built by railway magnate Henry Flagler. We loved the vibrant scene any time of day, but it really comes to life after dark.

3) Treat Your Taste Buds

Locals take their spirits seriously. At St. Augustine Distillery you can tour and taste award-winning bourbon, made from Florida corn and wheat and aged in charred American oak barrels. San Sebastian Winery has been producing dessert and sparkling wines for more than 25 years. Stop by any day of the week for a free tour and tasting. When it comes to mealtime, the biggest challenge is choosing from dozens

of eateries. For a spectacular dinner, check out Lena, an outdoor Argentinian -style open grill experience.

Castillo de San Marcos

The oldest masonry fort in the US and the oldest structure in the city was built to protect and defend Spain’s claims to Florida following pirate raids in the late 1500s. A short walk from downtown, it is now a national monument and one of the city’s most popular attractions. Rangers brought history to live, leading tours through rooms, once home to soldiers and prisoners.

5) Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center

Discover the city’s rich history of the Black experience in this exceptional museum. The building that was once the first black public high school in the city is filled with stories of locals who made a difference alongside stories of mistreatment and slavery. Floyd Phillips, the affable museum president told us, “As far as I’m concerned, if you haven’t been to Lincolnville, you haven’t been to St. Augustine.”

6). Ponce de León Fountain of Youth Archeological Park marks the area where the Spanish conquistador first landed in 1513. It’s the ideal place for a picnic lunch overlooking the Matanzas River and Saint Augustine Creek. Our guide told us that “not seeing Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth Park is like visiting New York City for the first time and missing the Statue of Liberty. Re-enactments with cannon firing demonstrations are performed multiple times every day by authentically costumed 16th century story tellers.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH IMPRESSIONABLE GIFTS & DECOR

A combination of things that fell right into place. Someone whom I worked for, my mentor, encouraged me to start my own business as he knew I had a bug for it. Something in me always wanted to own my own business and after working 60 hours plus for other businesses and feeling undervalued, I finally said enough and Impressionable Gifts & Décor was born. Initially I was going to open up a children’s clothing store! Long story but thrilled I started this as I enjoy decorating and gift giving. I really wanted to have a store where I grew up and live in Port Credit so when my first location was vacant at the time, I jumped for it. Plus, my family and friends were and still are my greatest cheerleaders. Everything fell into place; I could not fight the universe.

WHAT'S KEPT YOU SUCCESSFUL OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS?

My loyal customers. Because of them, I am able to continue what I love to do. Being passionate at what one does is also helpful. I love that expression, “Do what you love, love what you do”. When you do, it never feels like a job. The challenge of finding new and affordable merchandise, especially being the first retailer either in Canada or Mississauga to carry a particular product, that is a thrill. When I hear customers say, “I haven’t seen this anywhere else”, that makes me smile. Working closely with my many suppliers has contributed to my success as well. After 25 years, they understand what I look for and my limited space, we work well together. I adore working with local

artisans, there is so much amazing talent out there! As I like to say, ‘local supporting local’, keeping it in the community, it’s what makes us all thrive.

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPACTFUL MOMENT OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS?

There have been many that I’m incredibly grateful for. Winning the Community Leader Award, Ward 1 Entrepreneur of the Year, Community Impact Excellence, Best Gift and Home Décor store, etc. For people to take the time to nominate a small business - that is an honour in itself. Covid was financially negatively impactful for my business, like for so many. There was a silver lining as the business survived due to my wonderful customers. Having to close for a total of seven months was super tough but my customers and community kept me going. Their encouragement, their phone calls, e-mails and messages to tell me to hang in, checking in on me, hearing time after time, “Lydia, we don’t want to see your doors close”, is something I will hold near and dear to my heart forever. I truly felt the love of the community.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO KEEP GOING?

Everything. My family, friends and customers motivate me. Every day I open the door, it’s always a fun adventure. I get to meet new people, assist them in finding that perfect gift, help them put an ensemble together, look for something fresh for their home, I unpack new merchandise weekly… it’s like Christmas most days! ‘m one real lucky girl; I count my blessings every day.

WHAT DO THE NEXT 25 YEARS LOOK LIKE?

More continuous fun! I hope I can keep it going until I retirewhich is a long way off. Continuing to volunteer as it always feels great to give back in some way. It’ll also be very interesting to see what the new styles and trends will be like next 25 years. I am looking forward to every bit of it.

Our most exciting event is coming up July 1st at Westwood Square Mall as Malton Celebrates Canada Day!

From an array of children’s activities such as face painting, bouncy castle and games to a stage packed with entertainment the day ends with an incredible fireworks display. We are thrilled that once again the event will have many things for families to come and experience. Keep in mind that food vendors will be there selling their goods while the other activities remain free of charge. We are so grateful to the many sponsors who make this day possible!

Looking for something new in Malton? You will also start to see some progress on the Avro Arrow this summer as the foundation for the plane goes into Paul Coffey Park. This will be the first stage that you can really see of the plane but is part of many changes coming to Paul Coffey Park for all of us in Malton. It is exciting to see the improvements planned for that space coming to life.

This summer will once again see the Super Fan Basketball Court come to life with a summer program for youth. Not to mention a new skate park being constructed as well. OVER SCHEDULING & WHY WE DO IT

Do you ever wonder why your calendar and to do list look like they belong to three people? Do you wistfully think about the phrase unplugged while searching for your phone that is in your hand?

It is possible you are using “busy” as a way to cope with other things. All of us have been through a lot the last few years. We can feel intense pressure right now to “make up time” which frankly is just not possible. Sometimes we try to do it by saying yes to everything and everyone, it can also be a way to distract us from other issues. Maybe it’s grieving, the need to make other changes in our lives or just not having paid attention to our mental or physical health.

The signs can be subtle and range from needing to cut short attendance at friends and family events to missing deadlines. Sometimes they are loud and obvious, constant phone calls and notifications. Midnight stretches of work to hit a submission or frantically calling to get someone to cover for you. But we can’t live on the edge of adrenaline forever. You do need some downtime. Ask yourself when the last time you had a proper vacation. In the gig job world it can sometimes be hard to do that, but we all need to ask ourselves if that little extra is really a good extra. Make some time to declutter the to-do list, it will feel as good as decluttering a closet I promise!

WHAT TO EXPECT

"What goes into Professional Construction Management for Custom Homes and Major Renovation Projects?"

This tends to be a common question from homeowners, as they would like to know what to expect from their builder. It is important to note here that every builder does things differently. At Mount Cedar Homes we have developed systemized processes and controls that provide certainty and help our homeowners achieve their end goal with ease.

The answer to this question will detail our construction management scope as it relates to the 3 project phases (pre-construction, during and post-construction). Part 1 of this blog series will touch on the pre-construction phase.

Every project comes with it’s unique set of requirements that a construction manager needs to fully understand and address. The pre-construction phase is typically where the majority of the planning occurs. This starts with meeting the homeowners to understand their

priorities and the project scope. This is also when we perform a site visit to review the existing conditions and develop a strategy to address any logistical constraints.

Estimating the project cost is the next step after a comprehensive understanding of the site, client requirements and the plans are formed. Estimating is typically a lengthy process as the construction manager and estimator work closely to complete a detailed takeoff and factor in all of the elements involved. Experience is very important in this step with the type of build, the market, different systems, advising on alternative solutions, etc. As the estimate is developed, some optimization might be required to discover different options and ensure the project can be completed on budget. After the budget and scope are finalized, developing a detailed schedule that entails everything is important. Equally important is including a contingency to absorb any potential interruptions in the market.

In the effort of staying on track with decisions and orders; selection sheets (list of homeowners required to-dos and decisions) are prepared to ensure all decisions are made on time. This allows putting in orders for items with long lead times and ensuring they are available on time.

Another significant step that starts in the pre-construction phase and is carried out during construction is developing subcontractor and supplier scopes of work, negotiating, sourcing and coordinating.

The pre-construction phase is also the time to coordinate with utility providers for disconnects, relocates, etc. as needed. At Mount Cedar Homes we prefer communicating with the neighbours prior to the project starting. This is a great opportunity to meet them, provide contact information and answer any questions they might have.

Finally, I would like to emphasize again that each project is unique and might require a customized approach. The items mentioned above are the typical steps involved in the preconstruction phase. Parts 2 and Part 3 of this blog series will elaborate on the construction management scope during and post construction.

Patio season is finally upon us!

For many wine enthusiasts, this means tucking the heavier reds away until autumn and diving into traditional summer sippers. Rosé wines fall firmly into that category, but they sometimes come with a bad rap, especially with people whose first encounters with pink wines involved the cloyingly sweet white Zinfandels of the 1990s.

If your view on rosé is that it’s best left for beginners, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Rosé is made with a vast range of varietals and methods, from sweet to bone dry and simple to complex. They can be still or sparkling and very light to medium-bodied, or even on par with full-bodied white wines. In fact, there are so many ways to produce a rosé that it’s rare for any two to be alike.

As for methods, rosés can be made in three different ways. The most common is maceration. A red wine grape is crushed and left to rest with its skins for a shorter period than would be needed to complete a red wine. This can range from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on what the winemaker aims to achieve. The juicing is completed and the wine is finished, most often in steel tanks as with white wine. Some rosés do see some barrel time, though, including one of the wines featured below.

Another method is known as saignée. The winemaker begins making a red wine and decides to concentrate it to give it a bolder profile. A portion of the incomplete red wine is then siphoned or “bled” off from the bottom of the batch. The term saignée is used to describe this process because it’s the French word for bled. The winemaker is then left with both a bolder red wine and a bolder-thanaverage rosé.

The third method for creating a rosé is to blend. Here, the possibilities are endless. A blended rosé can use any red wine grape, finished to any stage of completion, and any white wine. The amounts used may vary dramatically, giving the winemaker a fully blank canvas for creativity.

Below, we’ve highlighted a trio of Ontario rosés. Each one represents a different wine region and a different varietal. These wines are made in two of the three methods above, and each offers a unique twist. They only have two things in common: they’re all pink, and you’ll need to buy them directly from the wineries because they’re not offered at the LCBO.

BETWEEN THE LINES 2021 ROSÉ

Four Mile Creek

(Niagara-on-the-Lake), Ontario

Representing the Niagara Peninsula on our Ontario rosé tour, BTL’s entry is made entirely from Pinot noir. This one comes with what’s described as a “barrel-aged twist” that gives the pink hue a slight orange tinge. The winery’s tasting notes describe red fruits and berries, but I find the profile to be more along the lines of apricots, apples, and lemon zest. It’s dry but not at all acidic and presents with a velvety mouth feel. This would pair beautifully with a light Thai-style curry loaded with coconut and lemongrass. Score: 8/10.

REDTAIL VINEYARDS

2021 GAMAY ROSÉ

Prince Edward County, Ontario

This bottle caught me out on a technicality. Redtail Vineyards is based in Prince Edward County, but the grapes for this wine are imported from Niagara. No matter: it’s produced with a County twist, so I think it counts. This rosé from 100% Gamay noir is hand-harvested,

crushed without stems, and cold soaked for six hours before pressing. Redtail calls this wine its “porch pounder,” and it’s easy to see why. It starts with aromas of white peach, apricot, and sweet cherry candy. The palate is very fresh with a light sweetness and flavours of sweet cherry and other stone fruits. It offers a significantly different profile than a Pinot noir rosé, and it’s a relative bargain, too. Try it with some midafternoon fruit and cheese on the back deck. Score: 8/10.

MUSCEDERE VINEYARDS 2021 ROSÉ

Erie Pelee Island Coast, Ontario

Here again we have an entirely different rosé, this time from Ontario’s EPIC wine region. Muscedere went with a blend for its 2021 vintage using 95% Vidal and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Vidal benefits deeply here from the mellowing and added interest the Cab Franc provides. Its light aroma melds strawberry with the Vidal’s peach influence, and the palate brings forward similar fruits in a barely offdry and summery finish. This wine is easy-drinking, balanced, and fresh. For something unconventional, try it with a grilled peach salad with goat cheese and mint, or pork chops with a sweet peach glaze. Score: 8/10.
