Rachel Paxton of Maison de Pax takes us on a tour of her home, designed as a place of peace, love, and refuge for her family of six.
H
ome is often a reflection of who we are and our life experiences. Rachel Paxton is no exception. Born and raised a Texan, Rachel has strong Southern roots. This is evident in the rustic vintage pieces throughout her home. In a sort of complimentary contrast, she grew up with a Francophile grandmother (admired all things French), and later seized an opportunity to reside in Paris for two years. Rachel quickly fell in love with the lifestyle and design. It was in Paris that she gave birth to her first child. Becoming a parent for the first time is a significant part of anyone’s life; in that experience, her heart became eternally tied to the City of Love. The English translation of the French saying “Maison de Paix” is House of Peace, and when changed to “Pax,” is a play on their last name. This term embodies Rachel’s
interior design philosophy that your home should be a place of peace for you. “Sometimes peace looks like toys everywhere,” Paxton said. “Our home is a place where we pursue peace, even when it’s crazy and loud. It’s a place where my kids want to be and feel safe.” As a homeschooling mom of four, Rachel also has a bit of a “do-it-yourself” side. Her blog is filled with beautifully photographed tutorials on creative décor projects throughout her home. When asked what the future might hold, Rachel spoke of countless dreams she and her husband have, including fixing up and renting out a Hill Country cabin, a second travel home in France, and her interest in interior photography. For now, however, she is content with raising her little ones and fostering her creative side with projects close to home.

BASKETS A guide to creating beautiful baskets for your loves this Easter
E
aster gift baskets don't have to be brimming with bright colors and sugar. Whether for your grandchild, your own little one, or even adapted for an
adult, anyone will adore sweet baskets like these. Start by using plain apple baskets from Hobby Lobby. You can make basket liners out of painter’s drop cloth, ribbon, and liquid stitch. Use printable iron-on transfer paper or a vinyl cutting machine to personalize with names. You can also find sellers on Etsy that will make (iron-on) vinyl stickers or embroidered patches. For a special touch, paint the wooden part of the handle to match the ribbons used in the liners. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 23
AT HOME You can find treat-filled tissue paper carrots at places like Anthropologie and World Market, or opt to make your own. Use sheets of cardstock rolled into a thin cone shape as the base. Stuff with items like toy cars and sugar free lollipops. You can also use Legos, mini characters, and other small items depending on the interests of the recipient. After filling cones, wrap in tissue paper and use clear scotch tape to secure at the end and around the top. At the top, twist the tissue paper, wrap a longer piece of tape around the base of the twist, and then snip off the excess to create a small nub. To make the greens, simply take a rectangular shaped piece of tissue and cut small slits almost all the way to the bottom. Then wrap the piece around the nub and secure with another piece of tape. Use pretty velvet ribbons to finish them off.

Framed Silhouette By Amy Williams
S
ilhouette portraits are a beautiful way to display your loved ones without hanging a normal photograph. This century old technique has a simple, yet classic feel and will look great as part of a gallery wall, grouped in a collection, or individually. With a few supplies that you probably already own, you can create your own framed silhouettes of your child, pet, or other family member.

WHAT YOU NEED: • camera, printer (or use an app to print at a drugstore from your phone) • black or dark cardstock • white matte board or scrapbook paper • scissors or X-Acto knife • pencil • tape • glue stick • picture frame(s)
1. Choose a picture frame, background paper and black or dark cardstock. The background paper can be white matte board, patterned scrapbook paper or fabric as long as it contrasts well with the cardstock. 2. Take a profile picture of your the subject in front of a light-colored wall or window. Even a phone camera will work for this project. 3. Upload the photograph to your computer and print the size needed according to your picture frame. You may need to enlarge or resize the photo. As a general guide, a 5 x 7 photo works for an 8 x 10 picture frame. Regular copy paper is fine. 4. You can draw details onto the photograph such as collared shirts, hair bows, buttons, or hats. Decide if you want the bottom of the silhouette to be cut straight across or have a traditional curved bottom. 5. Place the photograph over the dark cardstock, securing with double sided tape if necessary. 6. Cut around your child’s profile photo. For small details, like eyelashes, cut in two inward directions so the cuts meet as opposed to cutting in one direction and turning the scissors to eliminate any small tears. Sharp scissors or an X-Acto knife work best. 7. Trace the picture frame glass onto the background paper. Cut out the frame shape and center the silhouette onto your background paper. Adhere with a glue stick. 8. Place the silhouette in your picture frame and hang!

SIMPLE Sheet Pan Meals &Refreshing Sides
Lemon Parmesan Salmon and Asparagus 1 salmon fillet 1 pound asparagus spears, ends trimmed 1/2 cup butter 1 lemon, juiced 1 lemon, sliced 3 teaspoons garlic, minced 1½ teaspoons Italian Seasoning 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with foil and lightly grease with cooking spray. Place salmon in the center of the pan and arrange asparagus around the sides of the pan. Squeeze lemon over salmon and asparagus, then place lemon slices on top of salmon. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. In a small sauce pan, melt butter over medium high heat. Once melted, stir in garlic and Italian Seasoning. Pour mixture over salmon and asparagus and sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 10 minutes, then change oven to broil and cook another 5-7 minutes.
Summer Salsa 1 15 oz. can black beans, rinsed and drained 3 ears of corn, cooked 1 cup tri-mix diced peppers (green, red, and yellow) 1 cup fresh pineapple, diced 1/2 cup green onion, chopped 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped 1/2 jalapeĂąo, chopped 2 limes, juiced 1/2 teaspoon cumin salt and pepper to taste Mix all ingredients together in one large bowl. Refrigerate at least one hour. This is a great one to make ahead of time. The longer it marinates together, the better the flavor!

Rosemary Chicken and Potatoes 1-2 lbs. chicken breast 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1 Âź teaspoon salt, divided 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 4 teaspoons garlic, minced, divided 2 tablespoons rosemary, chopped, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 lb. red potatoes, diced 1/2 lb. green beans

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil. In a bowl, combine butter, 1 teaspoon salt, black pepper, 2 teaspoons garlic, and half of the rosemary. After lining center of baking sheet with chicken, brush breast with mixture. In a bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Toss potatoes and green beans until evenly coated. Pour mixture all around the sides of the baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes and then check the chicken. You can cover just the chicken with tin foil if the potatoes are not fully cooked yet. Continue cooking another 5-10 minutes until potatoes are done.
Tropical Summer Fruit Salad with Honey Lime Dressing DRESSING 1/4 cup honey 2 teaspoons lime zest (zest of 2 limes) 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
SALAD 2 cups fresh strawberries 3 kiwis 1 cup purple grapes 2 large mangoes 1 cup blackberries 1 cup raspberries
In a small bowl, combine all dressing ingredients. Peel and dice fruit. Pour dressing over salad and toss until evenly coated. Refrigerate one hour to allow flavors to meld together.

2 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 lemon (for juicing and zesting) 1 7 g package unflavored gelatin 2 8 oz blocks cream cheese 1 cup vanilla 0 % Greek yogurt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 Ÿ cup powdered sugar 1 cup heavy whipping cream
NOTE: Crust does not have to be baked, but doing so will ensure your cheesecake holds together better. If you want a beautiful cheesecake for displaying, we recommend prebaking the crust.
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Then, lightly grease a 9" spring form pan. 2. Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter and press into prepared pan. Bring crust 1-2 inches up the side. 3. Bake for 8 minutes, then allow to cool to room temperature. (See note below.) 4. In a separate small bowl, sprinkle gelatin evenly over lemon juice. Let mixture stand for about a minute before microwaving 20-30 seconds, then whisk to fully combine and dissolve gelatin. Set aside and allow to cool. 5. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy. 6. Add the Greek yogurt and beat until combined. 7. Add gelatin mixture, lemon zest, vanilla and sugar and beat until combined. 8. Add whipping cream and beat on low until combined, then beat on high for 3-5 minutes until fluffy and thickened (the mixture should hold stiff peaks on the beaters). 9. Pour filling into cooled crust, cover and refrigerate until set. About 6 hours will do, but overnight is best.

LOW COUNTRY BOIL

pring and summer offer many during special occasions to celebrate. With Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, showers, and Memorial Day, we gather often this time of year. Hosting any event, no matter the size, can be stressful. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, consider a laid back low country boil. With this casual theme, the food will be the star of the show. Preparation is as easy as throwing all ingredients into large pots and letting it boil while you complete set up and get ready. When the food is done, simply dump the pots down the middle of the tables onto newspaper.

CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING PROTEIN OPTIONS (USE ONE OR ALL): 4 pounds fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined 3 (16 ounce) packages cooked kielbasa sausage, cut into 1 inch pieces 5 pounds whole crab, broken into pieces 4 (8 ounce) lobster tails
ADDITIONS INCLUDE: 1-2 tablespoons seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay Seasoning), depending on spicy preference 5 pounds baby red potatoes, whole 8 ears fresh corn, husks and silks removed Heat a large pot of water over medium-high heat. If serving a very large crowd, use a turkey fryer pot outside. Add Old Bay Seasoning to taste, and bring to a boil. Add potatoes and sausage, and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the corn, crab, and lobster tails; cook for another 5 minutes. Add the shrimp when everything else is almost done, and cook for another 3 or 4 minutes.

ave we lost the art of connecting in a world where we are constantly connected? What does it mean to connect with our families in a fast-paced society? Every meal growing up, right after the prayer, my mom would ask us highs and lows of the day. This gave us a chance to let each other into the details of our lives: to tell stories, to share our hearts, to bring laughter. Since there were five of us, this one question would often take up the whole meal.

You may often feel connected to your children or other family members because you are seemingly constantly in communication, but texts and emails do not always mean real, raw and deep connection. Mark your calendar at the beginning of the week for at least one family dinner. This time together should be technology free. Turn off the television, laptops, and phones.

CANNING Preserving Memories, Not Just Food By: Melissa Hedrick Owner at A Bushel ‘n’ A Peck Cottage Food & Gifts
I
have always thought I was born in the wrong era, but I’ve come to realize that God put me in this era to be an advocate for the “old school ways.” So, I decided to embrace it! Why not, right?! I grew up on a farm in rural Oklahoma, where we raised beef cattle, hay, peanuts, and many other crops; it was hard work, but I am thankful that I had that upbringing. Growing up in that setting, you learn to make do with what you have– waste not want not! We had a huge garden, so we preserved our bounty by freezing, dehydrating or canning what we could at its peak freshness so we would have food year-round. The taste of something you grow with your own hands and preserve…well, let me just say it shames what you buy in the store! There are two ways to can food items: water bath canning and pressure canning. Always ascertain what foods can be water bathed and which must be pressure canned. All low acid foods such as red meat, poultry and most vegetables

must be pressure canned. This is due to botulism spores (cause poisoning) being able to survive the temperature of mere boiling water. Water bath canning is sufficient for fruits, pickles, jams, jellies, and tomatoes. I use both methods, but water bath canning is what I use most of the time. Water bath canning is a shorter, lower temperature method that is the best way to start. My favorite things to water bath can are jams and jellies. To get started you will need: • water bath canner, with rack • sanitized jars, lids and rings • jar funnel • jar lifter • magnetic lid lifter (not necessary, but makes life easier) • a good recipe You can usually find the water bath canner and tool kit for around $30-40, not including jars.

DIRECTIONS: Whisk the extra-virgin olive oil with the balsamic vinegar, sugar, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper in a small bowl until blended. Place the chicken breasts in a shallow bowl and cover with half of the dressing, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Spray a grill pan or 12-inch non-stick pan with cooking spray and heat to medium high. Place the chicken breasts on the hot grill pan. Cook for 3 minutes then flip the chicken breasts. Cook for another 3 minutes, and turn. Reduce the cooking temperature to medium low and cook the chicken for 20-25 minutes more, turning every 5 minutes or so. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of the chicken, but it will be done when it hits 165 degrees internal temperature. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes, then slice into Âź inch slices. Arrange the spinach, strawberries and red onion in a bowl. Lightly toss with the remaining dressing. Add the avocado, sliced chicken and top with feta and almond slices. Serve immediately.

DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, combine cucumbers, tomatoes and onions. In a smaller bowl, mix the olive oil, lemon juice, and dried oregano. Pour over the vegetables and mix well. Season salad with salt and pepper. Sprinkle feta cheese and olives over the top and mix. Adjust spices if need be. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

he first time I met Jimmy Don was at the grand opening of his store in Valley Mills. “I wanted the shop to be out here, close to home. I knew we may only get 2 or 3 people a week coming out here from Waco to the brick and mortar, but I just said, ‘that’s okay, we’ll treat them like kings and queens if they make the trip.’” Much to his surprise, and delight, Jimmy Don personally greets from 25-50 visitors a day at his shop.

As a native Texan, he chews a cigar that he doesn’t smoke (a habit he remembers of his grandpa), uses the phrase, “all y'all,” drives a brand-new truck but favors the old one he still owns, raises cattle, and rides around his property in a Gator (occasionally enjoying a beer) talking about how dry the creek is. He learned metal work from his father, and shares the trade with his sons and daughter. It’s a good thing, too, because he needs their help. As soon as the new shop was built, JDH Iron Designs outgrew it. They’ve already added another building. Megan, Jimmy Don’s assistant, says it’s not unusual to receive over 250 emails in a day from customers. When asked if he ever feels that fear of falling from the top of the success mountain, he gives a pensive nod, “Every day. I want to make sure my family knows how to handle this business and that everything would be taken care of.” He looks around his homestead in awe, as if he’s hoping not to wake up from a dream, still clearly enjoying the “Magnolia blessing.”

WHAT IS BITCOIN? Some refer to bitcoin as digital gold. Early investor Roger Ver was quoted as saying, “bitcoin is the most important invention in the history of the world since the internet.” It is currently the leading cryptocurrency out of over 1000 that are available in the world. It was invented in 2008 by an unknown person or group of people under the guise of Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoins are worldwide, decentralized, not subject to inflation and not regulated by any government. They can be sent using the internet directly from one person to another without having to involve a bank or any other intermediary to facilitate the transaction.
HOW TO GET YOUR HANDS ON BITCOIN: You can either choose to buy and hold bitcoins, buy and sell (trade) or mine them. To get you started on your accumulation of bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies, you can apply for a wallet on www.blockchain.info and then proceed to funding your wallet by converting your local currency into bitcoin through your bitcoin wallet of choice such as coinbase (https:www.coinbase.com) or any other bitcoin exchange platform. You can opt to accept bitcoins as a form of payment for rendering goods or services. It’s fast, cheaper and it is an easy way to start accumulating bitcoins. Mining bitcoins is also a method used to accumulate bitcoins. New bitcoins are released and awarded to miners through a process called mining. This involves validating and verifying transactions on the public ledger (blockchain) using specialized computers. There will only be 21 million bitcoins in the world. The following occurs during the process of mining bitcoins: • Someone in a network requests a transaction (buys or sells bitcoins); • The transaction is broadcast to other computers in the network; • The network validates the transaction by solving complex mathematical problems; • The verified transaction is then combined with other transactions to create a new block of data and update blockchain; • The transaction is complete and then bitcoins are issued as a reward to the miner that has done the validating. We live in a digital age and you want to start accumulating your own bitcoins because, with each passing day, bitcoins are becoming more valuable and more and more merchants are accepting bitcoins as a form of payment in exchange for goods and services rendered. Bitcoin is dubbed “digital gold” for a reason. “The next batch of millionaires will not come from those that invested in oil but from those that invested in crypto currencies.”
BLOCKCHAIN: continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography. Think of this as a public ledger of transactions that is almost impossible to corrupt or hack. CRYPTOGRAPHY: the practice or study of techniques for secure communication. H
ave you noticed a Premier ER and Urgent Care near you recently? Have you wondered what an ER is capable of when it’s not attached to a hospital? We reached out to Premier Corporate
to find out. A “freestanding” emergency center is a 24/7 health care facility that provides emergency care in a location that is not attached to a hospital. They are equipped and staffed to the same standards as an emergency department (or ER) in a hospital. If further care is needed, such as surgery or further observation, the freestanding facility will transfer the patient to the most appropriate next level of care, just as its done in a hospital based ER. Premier provides both emergency and urgent care at its locations. Paul Hamilton, Vice President of Business Development, says “According to a Truven Health Analytics study, 45-65 % of ER visits could have been seen in an urgent care facility. We eliminate that stress of a patient choosing which option they should go to and we help them manage the triage process. Our data shows over 70 % of our patients are seen in our urgent care facilities.” Premier has advanced radiology, such as CT Scan, X-ray, and ultrasound, as well as in-house labs. There is also 24/7 coverage from a physician board-certified in Emergency Medicine. At Premier, all commercial insurances, such as Blue Cross, United, Scott and White, are accepted and must be processed at “In Network” rates. This is a consumer protection law supported by Texas Department of Insurance (Insurance Code 1301.155). However, currently, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) agency does not recognize emergency departments not owned by a hospital, so Premier ER is unable to participate in Medicare, Medicaid or Tricare. For Premier’s urgent care facility, every insurance company is treated as in-network and they can accept Medicare, and Tricare Insurances. Medicaid is not currently accepted.

When should I go to the hospital ER versus free-standing ER? A patient should choose to go to the closest ER to them or call 911 if immediate assistance is needed. Many choose to come to Premier because the average time from arrival to being seen by a physician is less than 10 minutes. If we need to get a patient to another level of care, we have direct admissions to all area hospitals, surgical centers and pediatric specialty hospitals. This means you will go straight from a Premier facility to the admission area (surgery, in-patient stay, catheterization lab, etc.). How does the payment work? Premier follows the patient’s In Network benefit schedule for both the ER and the Urgent Care. This typically will mean a co-pay at the time of service and then the bill is submitted to your insurance company. There may be additional co-insurance or deductible responsibilities by the patient which will be determined by the insurance company and their plan. CMS insurance (Medicare, Medicaid or Tricare cannot be accepted at freestanding ERs at this time. Will I see a physician? Premier ER is staffed 24/7 with a board-certified physician, and urgent care will have either a physician, a Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant. Will I be billed on my insurance for an ER visit if I just need minor care? It’s important to know the facility you are going to. Premier has both an ER and an Urgent Care to treat minor and major injuries. Premier ER is open 24/7 and the Urgent Care hours are 7 a.m.- 9 p.m. and 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. in China Spring. However, if you go to another free-standing ER, or hospital ER, you will most likely pay ER prices even if the injury is minor. It’s always best to ask questions. Can you call ahead or go online to reserve a spot? There are some free-standing ER’s that offer online reservations or check-in options. For a true emergency, Premier believes people need to get the highest level of care whether they have a reserved time or not. Premier’s waiting rooms are usually empty because we strive to see everyone within minutes of entering our facilities. Do you also provide care for infants and children? Yes. In fact, over 30 % of all patients seen at Premier are under the age of 10.

oy Robinson has been playing guitar and singing for more than 60 years. He’s opened concerts for Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Ronnie Milsap, Roger Miller, Ray Price and George Jones. He’s even topped Elvis Presley on a Temple radio chart. In 2004, the Musicians Association of Central Texas awarded him a Hall of Recognition award for Central Texas. “I got on the phone and called all the band members I could find. About 25 of them were there,” Roy reminisces. Since graduating high school in Little River-Academy in 1958, Roy has been a part of several bands, including Roy Robbins and the Availables. “We were sitting in a place we were playing at in Temple thinking up a name. We first called it the Flames because I had a horse named Flames. There was a band out of Waco with that name though, so someone said ‘well we’re available’ and it stuck. My name was actually changed on one of the record labels by mistake about the time we were going on the road in 1966, so they didn’t take it off and I left it that way. Just never did change it. Caldwell was my actual name (I was adopted). So, I’ve had three names.” In 1968, after the band’s saxophone player was replaced with a piano player, the band’s agency secured dates at the Golden Nugget. “This was one of my biggies. Growing up, I use to go to cowboy movies in the afternoon — Eddie Dean was the singing cowboy. We were headlining for him. He was the nicest guy!” The 70s were about backing up other people. “We opened for about 30 different country music stars, but the one that caught my attention more than anyone was Johnny Cash. We were opening a show for him in Temple. When he came out to start a show, you could hear a pin drop. He had a way of captivating an audience that was almost eerie. No babies crying even. That taught me something.” Roy, too, captivates an audience—his wife, Louise, of 28 years in particular. “People were always intrigued with his voice. Naturally, I’m his number one fan.” While Roy didn’t stay on the road pounding out the music career, he did continue to play music as he graduated from Texas State Technical College, got a job and stayed there for 16 years. “I always wanted to play, but I didn’t miss running the roads. We’d have to drive all night to get to the next place, and that was tiring. I really didn’t care for that. Had I ever got to the point of someone else driving I might have been okay with that. There’s a lot of ups and downs and you

get discouraged. I actually enjoyed playing more when I was done being on the road.” Louise knows the crowd will always love him, on or off the road. “When we first started dating, I told him I love to dance, so I’ll dance and I’ll tell you what people are saying about you. In my eyes, and all the people who come to see him, he IS a star.” Today, you can catch Roy playing in the Central Texas area, including charitable time spent playing at Belton Community Center for people who’ve loved to dance all their lives. Roy’s recorded songs include Ship of Fools, Sea Sick Sam, Waiting and Johnny Lee.

andwritten, personal thank you notes show that you care enough to sit down with a pen and paper and express your gratitude. There really is never a wrong time to send a thank you note. Whether it be to the host of a dinner party, to your significant other for flowers, to your friend for a birthday gift or to a possible future employer for an interview, handwritten thank you notes speak volumes. It’s easy to forget this simple yet essential step in connecting with others and reiterating their importance in your life. Though you can relay the same message through a text or an email, there is something about a tangible, handwritten note that will distinguish you and make the recipient feel valued. Expressing our thoughts through writing allows us to say exactly what is on our hearts without the distraction of an immediate response.
KEYS TO A MEANINGFUL NOTE • Timeliness If it has been longer than two weeks, acknowledge the delay: “Please excuse my tardiness in sending this to you.” • Personal Include at least one thoughtful statement about the other person. • Stationery From embossed to colorful, details are appreciated. G
etting married at 18, right out of high school, goes against the typical modern grain, but it is what we felt called to do. Landon and I met in sixth grade at our small church in the friendly town of Canyon, Texas. He was my date to all of the Friday night football games until he was the one playing on that field, then I became his biggest cheerleader. Our childhood crush transformed into a deep love for one another. As we grew older, we felt the calling to pursue a future together. About a month before our senior year, we were engaged. Three weeks after graduation, on June 18th, 2016 we were married, and the next day were headed to our new home in Denver, Colorado where we now attend Colorado Christian University. Life was a whirlwind moving from small town Texas living to big city Denver life. We were not only learning how to take on marriage, but also going to school and working in a place where we knew no one. Being on our own has taught us how to rely on each other emotionally, physically, and spiritually. We learned to pursue God, pursue each other, and work through struggles together. It is almost never easy, but marriage is always worth it.

BEING ON OUR OWN HAS TAUGHT US HOW TO RELY ON EACH OTHER EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY, AND SPIRITUALLY. WE LEARNED TO PURSUE GOD, PURSUE EACH OTHER, AND WORK THROUGH STRUGGLES TOGETHER.
Now, married for almost two years, we still learn new things every day about what it looks like to trust God and follow our calling. Sometimes the calling on your life isn’t easy. It can be everything but easy, but so many blessings can come from the journey of pursuing your purpose. In the first few months of being married and moving, I remember just wanting to give up and move back to where life was comfortable. Looking back, I can definitely say that God was orchestrating our hardships into blessings. Even if your life calling may be counter cultural or challenging, don’t be afraid to step out and do great things. In time, your journey will reveal continual blessings in life.

Love Makes a Family

E
very time I look back on the journey that has brought us to this current season, I swell with emotions. Joy, sorrow, and thankfulness fill my heart. Our journey together started ten years ago. At the young age of twenty, and newly married, we had big dreams for our future, and we both agreed that included a big family. Due to my being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, we weren't sure if I would ever be able to bear children of our own, so we often talked about adoption as a real possibility. After a few years of marriage and a little bit of growing up, our hearts had changed from thinking “if” we would adopt to “when.” We dreamt of a large family filled with both biological and adopted little ones. On our first try, I got pregnant rather quickly and easily which fooled us into thinking the PCOS wouldn’t have as much of an effect as we had thought. Seven months after becoming parents for the first time, we were delightfully surprised to find out we were expecting again. We knew we wanted a brood of kiddos close together in age, so we were thrilled it happened again so easily. However, the reality of my condition soon came to light as I miscarried for the first time. As any woman who has ever had to feel that loss will tell you, it is heartbreaking. We didn’t know then this was just the beginning of a long road ahead filled with both losses and blessings. After another year or so I was able to get pregnant with our second child; however, the pregnancy was no easy road. Because of the PCOS, my doctor started me on progesterone which aided my body in keeping the pregnancy. The progesterone hormone that a woman’s body naturally

creates is responsible for the sickness so common in the first trimester. When additional amounts of this hormone are taken, the sickness is increased tenfold. It was a very hard time physically, but because of the loss and waiting period we had experienced, my heart was filled with gratitude for our sweet son’s life. A little while after the arrival of our second, we knew it was time to try again. This would be the hardest season of our lives to date. We struggled with loss after loss. During this time, I pleaded and begged the Lord for his mercy. Each time I couldn’t image dealing with the pain of loss again, but God was there and knew what we didn’t.
ONE DAY JUST A FEW WEEKS SHY OF MAKING IT INTO THE SECOND TRIMESTER, WE GOT THAT FATEFUL CALL. “RIGHT NOW,” THEY SAID. “CAN YOU COME RIGHT NOW?”

In the midst of all our sorrow, we were reminded how we had once dreamed of adoption and realized now was the time. We met with a Christian adoption agency and started the process. After jumping through quite a few hoops and a period of waiting, we were ready to be matched. This time was also a difficult one. We had to be filled with faithfulness, as each day we lived in limbo. We never knew when we might get a call telling us that an expectant mother was considering us or that a baby was about to be born we could adopt. With each day that passed without that phone call, the experience got more difficult. During the adoption process we found out that we were expecting again. Not knowing if this pregnancy would inevitably become another loss, we continued on, fighting for both and praying for at least one. Oh how the Lord is good to those who are faithful. One day just a few weeks shy of making it into the second trimester, we got that fateful call. “Right now,” they said. “Can you come right now?” We were overwhelmed with emotions as we headed to the adoption office. I just kept thinking, “Two babies, two babies. God is going to bless us with two babies this year.” And He did. Our hearts and our hands were full, but we just knew our family wasn’t complete. I still had the desire to harbor another 98 | moderntexasliving.com
baby within my womb one last time, but another adopted sibling just felt like the missing puzzle piece. Looking back, I can see the hand of our Heavenly Father guiding us to embryo adoption. The more we researched, the more we realized how much this married our two desires perfectly. We believe life begins at conception and these little lives need the opportunity at life just as much as any other. Embryo adoption is a great option for couples struggling to get pregnant but don’t have the means for a traditional adoption (which can be extremely expensive) and for couples that do not wish to have the embryos from their IVF journey destroyed after their family has been complete. We were chosen by a biracial couple in our area and the transfer was successful. We are excited for our a sweet Gracie girl that she will have a brother to relate to on different level. We have not told our family how this little guy came to be, so this will be quite the surprise! In March of 2018, I will bring our little boy into this world. We are overjoyed with the thought of meeting him. We hope that our story is encouraging to those out there struggling down the same path we have walked. Of all the lessons we teach our children, one of the most important is that love makes a family.
