Get out and do something! By CHRIS MURPHY

This is one the things that always crosses my mind. I was entertaining one of my customers that was visiting from St. Louis at Jax on H (then Claytons) at the Blue Monday Jam. They said to me, “I can’t believe this is a Monday night, I especially can’t believe it is Modesto!” I looked around the room, and a thought to myself, “no kidding, this

is really awesome!” I travel a lot, visit lots of other interesting cities, my customers for my warehouse business visit from everywhere and the feeling is always the same. Visitors leave Modesto, pleasantly surprised about that we have here, our downtown, the things to do, the festivals, our way of life, our American Graffiti heritage. I read other

publications like ModestoView in other cities and am proud of all we have to offer. The trick is, we all have to get out and do something to really enjoy it. Sure you can sit at home and watch TV and play video games. Just like the movie “If you build it, they will come” So, it goes to say that if you go out and do something, there will be more to do.

Trust me. Y o u

will be pleased to know how quickly you can cure your boredom. The See page 25, We Love Modesto

February 2011

Greetings Modesto Fans: This is so exciting. ModestoView Magazine is back! Over the last two years, I have been to so many places, different events, along the bike trail, at the Modesto High pool where so many people have told me how much they missed ModestoView Magazine. I am so very proud to say that we are back and here to serve you, the out and about, the interesting, the engaged, the active, the fun, the crazy, the idealistic, the creative, the curious people here in the greater Modesto area. Whether you have lived here for 50 years, 2-weeks, only visiting or thinking about visiting, ModestoView is your place to find the things and the places to be to experience the best of what we have. It is amazing that I still happen upon people that think that there is nothing to do in our town. ModestoView.com has been spreading the positive Modesto word every single day since 1997, when we launched originally as “PlazaCam. com” tracking the construction of 10th St Place. ModestoView.com was soon expanded by Expedition/ SiteJockey with Scott Campbell and soon created Modesto’s first live webcasts showcasing the millennial fireworks on 1,1,2000 and then the first MAMA Awards and the very first B93 (B92.9 now) Acoustic Christmas shows

later that year featuring Flying Blind. 2006-2008 saw the first ModestoView magazines where we changed the way we all looked at arts, entertainment, community, music and dining. So, after a brief hiatus, we are back, better than ever, in 32 page full color to vividly celebrate all that is happening and how you can get involved and get out and do something. The driving force for ModestoView Version 2.0 is my friend Greg Cobb and his son Kyle who delivered the energy and the excitement to reach out to the local businesses and organizations to generate the advertising here in ModestoView that makes is possible to deliver this to you and the hundreds of free pick up locations all over Stanislaus County. You will all be excited to know that most of our writers are back and we welcome new contributors like Ian Hill formerly of the Stockton Record/209Vibe and Ruban Porras aka ModestoFamous. Noah Juergenson and Elliot Gage drive ModestoView. com and Noel Rocha is our designer. Special thanks to my wife Becky and my daughters Madison and Abbey who always remind me how exciting life can be when we take time to notice what is around us and enjoy each other. We all need work together to create a fun and exciting way to promote all that is happening in our town. Tell your friends about things happening, follow our tweets, be our Facebook friends,

Local World Class Taste Treats Modesto, USA has some of the best locally owned dining anywhere. I have spent my life travelling, my wife and I love to cook, and our family and friends enjoy a great meal. It is doubly nice when you can go eat out atyour favorite restaurants and where your friends are the owners and really care about your dining experience and connect and give back to our town. I am a local eater and find locally owned places no matter where I am. Our restaurants are great, not just local great, but world class great. The amazing fusion at Surla’s, the homestyle inventiveness of Harvest Moon, the comfort of Jax, the elegance of the big room at Galletto, the precision of Dewz, the ecclecticness of Concetta, the morning wake up at Deva, the grilling at Barking Dog, rich sauces at Vito’s, the tastes of Bacchus and Tressetti, the eastern flavors of Pappachino, Skewers and Guru, the crazy rolls at Miki Sushi, aromatic flavors at Fuzio, flaming

cheeses at Papapavlos, the vintage tiki flavors at Minnie’s and the list goes on and on. I could go on and on and we haven’t even began to touch the diner, sports bar and pub flavors that exist all over town. Every month, we will highlight fun places you may or may not have tried and maybe you will find a new favorite place. We will introduce you to our local chefs, our farmers’ market vendors, our rich agricultural offerings. You will be amazed at the local culinary talent and be excited that we have so many options. In Modesto, USA, your evening just starts with a nice dinner as our local entertainment scene will take you into the wee hours of the night. Enjoy ModestoView and please send us your faves, your ideas, your tips and we will help spread the word. Thanks, Chris chrism@modestoview.com

12 Questions with Executive Chef John Surla By Rick Serpa What factors make up a great dining experience? For most, it’s quality food at a reasonable price backed by a knowledgeable and efficient wait staff. You get all of this and more at Surla’s. Executive Chef and owner John Surla opened Surla’s in 2009 and has assembled an all-star team to compliment his culinary expertise. Whether it’s Paco or Miguel in the kitchen, Matt or Sonya behind the bar, or Jerry, Gar, or Rick in the dining room, Surla’s customers know they can count on getting one of the best dining experiences in town. Chef John received his formal training at Diablo Valley College

and the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena in arts, baking and pastry, and Restaurant Management. Before opening Surla’s Chef John worked at numerous restaurants throughout California. He has over 17 years of experience and include stints at One Market Restaurant in San Francisco, Blackhawk Grill in Danville, Lucasfim, the Golden Vine Winery (Robert Mondavi) at Disneyland’s California Adventure, and a 7 year stay as the Executive Chef at Modesto’s own Galletto Ristorante. Modestoview (MV) sat down with Chef John (CJ) over cocktails at Surla’s to ask him 12 questions. MV: What made you decide to become a chef? CJ: My mother was my biggest influence and she was a great cook! I knew that I wanted to cook when I

was in the 1st grade after watching Martin Yan (Yan Can Cook) on TV. My mom recognized this interest and steered me in the right direction. She entertained a lot and I was her sous chef at a very young age. The first thing I remember cooking was fried rice with sausage, peas, and carrots. It was delicious! MV: It’s a big step opening your own restaurant, particularly when you did. What was the tipping point? CJ: After I left Galletto I decided to pursue my dream. It was a huge leap of faith because it was mid 2009, during one of the worst economic downturns that this area has ever seen. I was confident in my abilities, I had assembled a great staff, so I knew that I would succeed. MV: What is the most popular item on the menu? CJ: Lumpia. It’s wrapped grilled

chicken, shitake mushrooms, pepper jack cheese that’s deep fried and then drizzled with sweet chili sauce and scallions. MV: What is your favorite item on the menu? CJ: The miso-glazed salmon. It’s delicious! MV : What three items are always in your refrigerator at home? CJ: Bottled water, Dannon yogurt and eggs. MV: What is your favorite meal from your childhood? CJ: The chicken adobo that my mom made. I have it on the menu now. It’s Filipino braised chicken, with Italian style tomatoes, jasmine rice, and a soy vinegar jus. MV: What is your culinary indulgence? CJ: Ihave a real sweet tooth and I love candy. My favorite is Reese’s Pieces.

MV: Have you ever cooked for anyone famous? CJ: Dot Marie Jones from Glee and Timothy Olyphant are both regulars at Surla’s. When I was at Galletto many of the performers at the Gallo Center would have their pre-performance meal at the restaurant. I remember Tony Bennett had a Penne Bolognese before his opening night performance several years ago. When I worked in L.A. I cooked for both Bono and Drew Carey. MV: If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would you invite and what would you prepare? CJ: I’d invite Chef Daniel Boloud and Chef Arnold Pulido because they are my culinary heroes. Of course my mom, Corazon Surla, because she is my earliest inspiration and I love her. I’d prepare pan seared scallops as the appetizer and braised beef short ribs for the entrÊe. We’d wash it down with the 2002 Duckhorn Merlot. For dessert I’d prepare a white chocolate mousse. MV: What do you do in your spare time? CJ: I like to work out and I like to eat out. MV: Where do you like to go out to eat in Modesto? CJ: Tasty Taco has the best tacos

in town. I also like the dim sum at Dynasty Chinese Restaurant. When I feel like sushi I go to Miki’s and get the Godzilla Roll. They also have a great happy hour. MV: What’s the best part of owning your own restaurant? CJ: The best part is building my business and interacting with my loyal customers. I also have a great staff that I enjoy working with. John Surla, Entrepreneur and owner of Surla’s Restaurant, has been cooking since third grade. A graduate of the Diablo Valley College in Concord, California, John studied and mastered Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry, and Restaurant Management. He has over 17 years of experience in the food industry and, in particular, has cooked for world renowned companies such as LucasFilm, Mondavi, and Galletto’s. nightview Here’s what you need: · 3-4 fresh raspberries · 1 oz. lemon juice · 3/4 oz simple syrup · 3/4 oz. St. Germain (a FABULOUS elderflower liqueur) · 3/4 oz. Ciroc Red Berry Here’s what you do: 1.Combine and gently muddle the first three ingredients. I emphasize gently as it is preferable to keep the raspberry seeds intact (or it makes the drink sour). 2. Strain that baby. Get rid of those seeds. 3. Incorporate the other two ingredients. Shake it up and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. 4. Call me up. Invite me over. Make another Velvet Rope.

Mr. Matt Way is a man you want behind your bar. With 14 years of bartending experience with him, Way can not only think up and create a mean drink, but he’s also a person who is obviously passionate about his work and keeps himself well-informed on his trade and ingredients. Until I sat at Surla’s very fun red-lit bar last week I had never experienced St. Germain or Buffalo Trace or had a Cucumber cosmopolitan (Surla’s most popular

Rope on the menu for the ladies (I assume because it’s pink). Shortly thereafter he began to notice an interesting trend with the drink. For the first round, women would normally order a Velvet Rope and men would have…. whatever they were having. Next round, however, was Velvet Ropes all around. They are that tasty.

Surla’s Matt Way By Kate Serpa

Featured cocktail interesting fact: Originally, Matt Way put the Velvet

cocktail). Thanks to Way, I have seen the light and the error in my past ways. Way, who is known for his excellent mojitos, has been making Surla’s bar patrons incredibly happy since the restaurant’s opening in November of 2009. The menu at Surla’s is consistently unique, incredibly addictive, and revolves around supporting local produce and businesses. Likewise, new cocktails are constantly poured out. Cocktails vary seasonally and Way has access to quality local produce to incorporate which he uses to his, and everyone else’s, advantage. However, Way isn’t just concerned

with creating innovative drinks, he’s also a firm believer in the classic cocktails. Way is a smart guy; he believes it’s important to know where it all started, especially since the ‘basic cocktail norm’ is constantly and rapidly changing. He believes the best mixed drinks should stick to and highlight the basics. For example: I love gin. I love gin. I love gin. I shared this with Way and before you could say “…geeze, she must really love gin…” , Way had poured out a lineup of fantastic gin cocktails, all classic with the slightest twist. Way is a man after my own lushy heart.

So why go to Surla’s? It may be off the downtown-dining beaten path, but trust me: it’s well worth it. Way tells me Surla’s wants their clientele to feel at home. He stated it’s important to shake everyone’s hand; it’s the little things that count and he believes this restaurant does an exceptional job (and I agree!). Come to Surla’s for the amazing menu, and stay for cocktails with Matt Way! Kate is a writer and musician in Modesto, CA. She is a graduate of CSU Stanislaus and is an expert on our after-hours scene.

Reel Randy By Randy Siefkin

On behalf of the Modesto Film Society, I welcome the return of the print edition of Modesto community’s only Viel, too long absent from the local arts scene. The goal of the “Reel Randy” column is to bring you news and opinions about the local cinema scene. The Modesto Film Society launched its seventh season in January with a showing of a newly restored 35 mm print of From Here To Eternity, made from the original negative from 1953. Other films on this year’s program are Breakfast At Tiffany's, On The Waterfront, The 39 Steps, Road To Morocco, South Pacific, Shane, The Caine Mutiny and Lawrence Of Arabia. The Film Society makes an effort to show the best 35 mm prints when available, just as the film makers intended. All features are scheduled for the third Sunday of the month (we skip June, August and December), and showings are usually accompanied by a pre-film organ concert by Kyle Barker of Barker Music, a period newsreel or cartoon, a trivia competition and other surprises. All film goers are encouraged to attend dressed as a character from the film or as they would have in the year the film wasreleased. More information about the Film Society and the benefits of membership can be found at the Film Society’s web site, www.modestofilm.org, by calling 5218772, or modestofilm@aol.com. The State Theatre’s Cinema Club, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month, specializes in screening the best foreign, independent and American films, along with thought-provoking discussions led by film scholars, critics filmmakers and industry insiders. Films screened by the Cinema Club have included Seven Samurai, The Conversation, Touch of Evil, Vertigo, Cinema Paridiso, Wild Strawberries and 8 1/2. More information about the Cinema Club and the benefits of

membership can be found at The State Theatre’s web site, www. thestate.org. The State Theatre is sponsoring a weekend of O s c a r ®- r e l a t e d activities on The Modesto Film F e b r u a r y 2 6 - 7 , Society will feature including a media Breakfast At Tiffany’s. and poster sale and a free live broadcast of the Academy Awards® Ceremony on the State’s big screen. Those of you who remember last year’s event which served as pep rally for local favorite Jeremy Renner and The Hurt Locker, will agree that it was a highlight of local film scene. Find out more by calling The State (527-4697) or picking up a flyer at the box office, weekdays from noon to 3 p.m. As part of my continuing film education, I’ll be attending the annual Art House Convergence conference near Park City, Utah, the location of the annual Sundance Film Festival (alas, returning before it begins). The Convergence brings together more than one hundred independent art house associates to hear from inspirational speakers and participate in workshops to improve the quality and effectiveness of theatres like The State. I’ll have more to report in next month’s column. Also attending will be The State Theatre’s General Manager Sue Richardson. A recent study in The Wall Street Journal says that ten percent of movie goers bought half of all the movie tickets sold in 2009. And finally, from Nora Ephrom’s latest book I Remember Nothing, this comment about the current state of cinema presentation: “…it used to be so romantic to go to a movie—to sit in a big theater that had a balcony… and fabulous gilt trim on the walls…. Now we go to horrible unadorned gray rectangles where the sound bleeds in from the gray rectangleright next door.” Randy Siefkin is a retired Professor of Political Science. He is active in local community activities and is currently the President of the State Theatre of Modesto Board of Directors, serves as Secretary of the North Modesto Rotary Club and is the director of the Modesto Film Society.

Mayor Jim Ridenour City of Modesto By CHRIS MURPHY

As we start a new 2011, we look forward to a new year and opportunities in Modesto. ModestoView took some time to catch up with Mayor Jim Ridenour as he prepared for his State of the City address and shared a great conversation about where we can go as a community. Let’s meet the mayor. ModestoView: What do you see as the biggest challenge for Modesto in 2011? I would say that our finances will be the biggest challenge in 2011. We are not getting good news from the state and Modesto has to think smarter. When people are losing their jobs, their homes, etc. those are bad enough in their own right, but it creates a ripple effect in our community and services. Modesto needs to act quickly and do the things that create new jobs and opportunity. More jobs helps fund public safety and community services. Keeping our citizens safe is our number one priority. Our communities and cities need to work together. MV: If you had unlimited funds and community support, what would you want to do for Modesto? MR: If I had unlimited funds and community support I would start fixing our roads and our infrastructure. Better roads and infrastructure make Modesto a better community for business which in turn makes Modesto more financially stable. MV: Are you excited to see Modesto grow Graffiti Summer and increase our American Graffiti heritage? MR: Yes – I love Graffiti Summer and our American Graffiti heritage. It’s what I have the fondest memories of in Modesto. It’s so unique to our community and it has such a huge following, it’s really amazing to see all the people that come from lots of different places, not just Modesto, for our Graffiti Summer events. They love the cars, thenostalgia, and simpler times. MV: How do you think the StateTheatre and the Gallo Center make Modesto different than other central valley cities?

12

MR: Having the State Theatre, Gallo Center for the Arts, all the art galleries and home-grown arts groups make Modesto the cultural hub of the Central Valley. It’s what sets us apart from any other city in Stanislaus County and the entire Central Valley for that matter. Where else in this area can you live in an affordable home in any number of unique neighborhoods; eat in

your choice of a national-type restaurant or a locally owned, unique restaurant and also take in a Broadway show? Nowhere exceptModesto. That’s why so many people live here – they want a place where they can raise a family, have a job and enjoy the finer things in life. MV: What do you think the missing link is to job creation in Modesto? MR: I think it’s acombination of available land, ready infrastructure and not having a trained workforce. For economic development, you need places for businesses to build and/or expand, you need to have the infrastructure in place to provide adequate water and sewer services and you need to have a skilled workforce for these businesses to hire from. I think we’re on the right path to put all of these things in place, but it takes time and we didn’t do it back when things were good and that is what’s hurting us right now. MV: What makes Modesto unique? MR: Modesto is unique because of the people. We truly are a community – it doesn’t matter what happens, people are there. If it’s a community event, people come out and support it – especially our local businesses, if there is someone in our community in need, people do whatever needs to be done in order to help them. We have a very caring community and that’s what makes Modesto special. MV: Are you excited to see thereturn of the Amgen Tour of California? MR: Oh yes, I love the Amgen Tour of California. I never really was much of a cycling fan until that race came to Modesto for the first time in2008. You really get into it! Especially now that we are a finish city, the past two years I’ve been right at the finish line cheering and yelling right along with everyone else. You can’t help it! It’s also invigorating to see how much our community loves this event. They come out in the thousands, line the entire race route, ring their cowbells and truly enjoy the day; it’s just great to see it and experience it. MV: Describe your perfect evening in Modesto. MR: My perfect evening would be going to a really nice restaurant downtown and then heading over to the Gallo Center for the Arts or the State Theatre for a good show. We have some really great restaurants downtown, they are all so unique, so it doesn’t matter what you are craving, you can get it and the food is local, fresh and delicious. MV: What was your favorite thing to do in Modesto when you were a kid? MR: I loved to cruise. We used to cruise 10th and 11th Streets. MV: Which drive-in did you hang out at during the cruise years? MR: Burge’s

Board Meetings With A Twist By Wyatt Thomas I wandered into The Boardroom on a discovery mission. There’s been a sign in the window for months on the corner of 16th and J St. in downtown Modesto and looked to be start and stop construction. My curiosity finally got to me and it was time to see what exactly was going on. The door was open and there were workers scurrying about as if they were planning on opening this day. The first person I met was Sean Devlin. He welcomed me and introduced himself as the General Manager. Swiftly, he introduced me to Roman Wagner, the owner. Before I knew it, a tour was in progress. Our first destination was what Roman and Sean believe is the longest seated bar in Modesto. I looked at the bar and about 30 bar stools were waiting to be occupied by thirsty patrons. Next, I was taken to the upstairs bandstand. The stage is easily seen from anywhere in the lounge. Behind is a VIP lounge that could be used as a green room for upcoming entertainment. This place is awe inspiring. Months of thought and labor had obviously been exhausted into this creation, but why? Wagner must know opening another bar in downtown Modesto couldn’t possibly be a good Idea, right? Wrong! This isn’t another bar according to Wagner,

but a vision of a missing element in downtown. ”I like to go out and socialize, but often-times find myself misplaced”, said Wagner. ”I’ve had this vision of a downtown meeting place with a fun atmoshphere catering to the working professional with an emphasis on live local bands. We want to create memorable cocktails, and memorable times. We are going to try real hard to provide great service in a comfortable environment.” During the day, this is a business casual place to enjoy a conversation and your choice of 20 fine beers on tap, a mixed drink or your favorite glass of wine. They have free WiFi and plenty of room to do some paperwork. At night, you can rely on the sounds of live, local music. ”We’re going to have live entertainment every night”, said Wagner. ”There’s a lot of local talent and we want to showcase that in a place where you will feel safe and have fun”. Wagner has been in the business for many years. As an employee, he was mentored by Dan Costa while spending time at The Creamery and Mallards. “I owe so much to Dan and his wife Denise. Growing up and working with Dan was actually my college career. He taught me everything I know about business”. Wagner also owns P. Wexfords, a popular Irish pub on McHenry Avenue.

Asked how he has pulled together The Boardroom with this upscale but comfortable appeal, Wagner immediately deferred to his contractors. “I’ve been surrounded by good people. All of our contractors are local and have taken pride in their trade. I would recommend them for any project. The teamwork is obvious”. Tom Solomon, of Cosol Commercial Real Estate helped locate the building and according to Wagner it is perfect. “Bob Degrase of L Street Architects put the plans and structural design together. Bob really worked hard and deserves tremendous credit. Once the plans were in place, Western Valley Development was hired as the General Contractor. Tom Cosentino took the reins and put the team together. Tom did a helluva job”, said Wagner. Eric Layman of Layman Electric took care of the lighting and electical work. To provide comfort to the patrons, the craftsmen were Eric Fleck and John Harden of DeHart Plumbing and HVAC. The old world texture and drywall work was done by Western Drywall, led by John Shatswell. Oliver Norwood, a master painter and owner of Big Valley Painting, put the final surface touches on and the place looks fabulous! The stained concrete floor with accents of carpet were done by Mike Lawlor of Solid Creations Concrete and Jerry

Sheldon of Sheldon Lee Flooring. Wagner stated that the visionary behind the over-all look was Adam Soares of CG Customs. Adam fabricated all the interior work from the entire bar to the booths, tables and artwork. ”Where we saw nothing, he created art. Adam took my ideas and ran with them. He brought an immense passion and creativity to the project. No detail was over-looked. All creative credit goes to Adam”. Outside, The Boardroom looks just as inviting. Tyler Manual of Don’s Mobile Glass transformed the entry and Aaron Soares of S&S Services capped it with the signage. During the whole process, Wagner says his right hand man, loyal and dedicated friend, Ryan “Hondo” Johnson has been the brains and brawn behind the whole operation. “Hondo makes up for all my deficiencies”. Finally, it’s time for you to enjoy this new addition. The Boardroom is open 7 days a week, 11am to close with, nightly live entertainment. Sean Devlin, General Manager, is prepared to provide a classy, happy and fun experience upon every visit. The best of the best! A place where you can rely on top service and entertainment. Wagner says that, “Sean Devlin is entrusted to the complete operation. Sean is a master mixologist and has been perfecting his craft for years. He has a tremendous following and a wealth of experience and flair. We are lucky to have him.” The Boardroom is located on the corner of 16th and J Streets. Call them at (209) 409-8665

We’re Back!

By Ian Hill

We know you've been lost without Modesto View. You haven't known about the hottest Modesto clubs or the best local bands, and as a result you've probably been forced to stay in on weekends and stare at the dark screen of your iPod. Well, now it's time to get off the couch and get ready to party. We're back, and we're going to get you caught up with what's been going on in the local music and entertainment scene. Modesto View asked some musicians and promoters to tell us what they've been up to since MV last hit the streets in 2008 and what they've got planned for 2011. Here's what they had to say. Mike Allsup, guitarist and vocalist for the Modesto rock band DAM: The last two years have been a blast

14

for DAM. Along with winning a MAMA award, a few highlights included playing nine festivals, sharing the stage with bands like Jimmie Vaughan, Y&T, UFO, The Tubes, Powerman 5000 and our favorite bluesman from Texas, Lance Lopez. We've added Tim Allen to the lineup on keys and Richard Meeker has been playing a little harp with us lately. Some of the most memorable shows have been the benefit shows involving friends or children. Those are smiles I won't soon forget. In 2011 DAM will start the year off with a bang playing with Y&T at the Fat Cat on Feb. 17th. We're getting ready to head back into the studio this summer. We've been writing a lot lately and can't wait to share the new stuff. We have some friends in Belgium trying to get

DAM rocks the house. us over there for a little tour and some studio time. We're glad to have Modesto View back in action and look forward to what year holds. Ryan Hamilton, director of marketing for Modesto's Flyboys promotions: It was about this time in 2009 that Flyboys started to establish ourselves as more than just another fly-by-night promotion company (no pun intended), and really came into our own as a legitimate staple of Modesto nightlife. Fresh off of our one-year anniversary, our monthly Cover Party had really begun to take off, and we had just secured our first national act in DJ Fashen. Fast forward to the present, a month removed from the crowning of our second Flygirl of the Year and Fashen's second tour of Fat Cat, along with countless other national acts under our belt, we pride ourselves as one of the more conceptually-innovative companies in our industry. However, if you had to sum up our lasting imprint on Downtown Modesto in the past 24

Flyboys planning a new event.

months it would quite simply be this: HOUSE PARTY! What started as a simple idea to bring a college-stylehouse party to Copper Rhino every Thursday night with a keg on the patio, beer-pong, and affordable drink specials has evolved into arguably the best party in Modesto 52 weeks a year. As for 2011, Flyboys plan to continue to push the boundaries of what nightlife can and should be, and bring the best entertainment possible to the 209. In order to accomplish this we hope to maintain a trend that was really established in the latter half of 2010 of collaborating with fellow area promotion companies. Perhaps growth in the form of maturity should have been listed as part of our journey from 2009, but what could have previously been classified as petty rivalries and struggles for favoritism amongst venues have since been replaced by understanding and reverence amongst our respective companies. As seen by our endeavors with Pure 209 for

French Cassettes prepare for fame. Groove Fest, as well as our joint efforts with Talk of the Town and Sweat over the past several months, our collective strengths, pooled resources and contacts will surely give relatively small-market Modesto the luxury to experience the big-city entertainment it deserves. Cob@lt, Modesto rapper and hiphop promoter: My last two years have been dedicated to finishing up my official debut album "COB@LT45" along with several other projects in the making.

Cob@lt in Downtown Modesto. I've met up with Urban Riot Gear and created a team of promoters dedicated to bringing back the four elements of hip-hop. Along with creating Cobalt Presents we have created the Bring it Back Central Valley Chapter in order to spread real hip-hop shows throughout the greater 209 area. In the last two years we have brought out Eligh and Scarub, Zion-I, The Grouch, Opio and Equipto and many more talented underground heroes. We are starting off the new year with a bang by bringing in world-renowned poet and activist Talib Kweli Sunday, Jan. 9 at Fat Cat. In 2011 we are also officially preparing for the "COB@ LT45" album release and release party Saturday, Feb. 19 at Fat Cat. We are

also planning to bring back INDIE FEST 4, Modesto Meltdown and many more special surprise events and guests throughout the year. Finally, look for Cob@lt on the 209's Finest Hip-Hop Tour which begins in May. Thomas Huerta, bassist for the Ripon indie rock band French Cassettes: We have had a very productive couple of years. Since 2008 we have added horn players to the band and developed a more eclectic and mature sound than on our previous EPs. We have played dozens of shows in the central valley and bay area. Our selfproduced last release, “Seahorse EP”, was well received and earned us a Modesto Area Music Award for the Indie category. The EP is now available on iTunes. We spent the latter half of 2010 writing and recording a handful of new songs which, we feel, showcase our commitment carefully constructed music that is just as much fun to play as we hope it will be to hear. The recording process has been very demanding and the long hours of countless takes and fine-tuning tones have led to the creation of our best release yet. The EP should be ready by the end of January and will be available as we continue to play local shows while the profits go to funding a potential tour in the summer.

Mike Vanek live and promotes the metal scene in the 209.

Metal bands need more all-ages places to play.

By mike vanek

dome are all shut down. Now, due to the rules and regulations of the city of Modesto and its police department there are lots of great Modesto bands like Mneumonik, kingdom fall, & Spontanious Cumbustion among others that have no place to play because of their age and this guy thinks that is just wrong. There are a few alternatives but not many. The queen bean & jax on h st. Shy away from metal & hard rock. The carver hall, seasons, & the clarion hotel are expensive alternatives and the workshop in Ceres remains the remaining home of all ages metal! This has to change and we need all ages places to rock. There is some good news as the 21+ crowd somewhat booming and bands are entertaining crowds all over town, but once again the gold standard of downtown venues and the home of local metal/Hard Rock is the fat cat music house & lounge!! Now this year, two veteran Modesto bands are leading the surge. Dam/levee is still the kings of downtown continuing their streak of opening massive shows at the fat cat for huge acts like y&t and others. Nothing but losers has to be named as one of, if not the hottest metal band in town right now!! Nbl has long been jokingly dubbed as “Modesto's most hated band” but there isn’t a metal band in town that promotes more, plays more local shows to packed crowds, & has the most dedicated local followings i have ever seen!! Both of these bands have followings that have developed groups called the famdamily & the losers and I've found myself involved

The State of The Scene Www.Facebook.Com/mike.Vanek

First of all this article is dedicated to our friend Terri sterner of the nor-cal plastics who passed away last year and i just wanna thank Chris Murphy for asking me to once again join the staff of the mighty Modesto view magazine!

16

Now the hardrock & metal scene in Modesto has dramatically changed since i last wrote this article. First, many of our all-ages venues are few and far in-between and a lot of them are gone!! Modesto mainstays of the last few years, modesto virtual, pizza factory, pizza & beer & the thunder

in both proudly!! Now the scene has a lot of other bands that i have to mention. The band i have to start off with is better left unsaid who continues their touring ways and have played some epic local shows along side their friends the athiarchists from Eugene Oregon that have adopted Modesto as their second home. Other great local bands include 2010 mama award winning through the ashes, from the atwater/merced area there is thistimes brutal & cursed!! Stockton brings us California medication, and of course we have great Modesto bands like asavd, through the threshold, & the burden we bear have been making waves as of late. Another great place to see local metal See page 30, METAL

People are always telling me how boring my town is. That bit is less interesting if I separate who is saying it from who is not. You know who isn’t saying it? Friends from Portland, who look forward to spending the night on a local Modesto musician’s couch, and being given a sidewalk tour of “the house where Grandaddy used to play.” A friend of mine from LA, who upon hearing a local artist’s CD, was convinced that they’d just heard some up-and-coming major label debut by some Nashville expatriate. An actual major-label artist, who, after playing a small acoustic gig at a local café, commented that it was the best acoustic show he’d played. Chief among his reasons why were the fantastic people who came to hear him play, and the great atmosphere provided by his hosts. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an unkind word spoken about my town or its people by any of the musicians I’ve encountered through my job at B92Nine. Oddly enough, I hear it from people who live here. I suppose I can understand that, to an extent. Common is the belief that everyone has it better than you. That the grass is greener, the music sweeter, and the people classier on the other side. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that someone, somewhere, is having more fun than you are. I suppose that’s entirely possible. I submit, however, that it’s definitely true if you have a full evening of complaining planned. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. How

does the saying go? If you’re bored, then you’re boring. Maybe we’re living in different towns. Perhaps these people inhabit some shadowy, other Modesto, populated by musically-untalented people who make horrible food. Could they be trapped there, doomed to spend their days suffering at the feet of their masters: Envy, Bad Taste, and Short-Sightedness? The town I live in has local music pretty much every single night of the week. There’s a growing comedy scene. You could sample the food of a different country every night for weeks. And, in my experience, there’s always someone fascinating to talk to, a new friend to be made. People are always telling me how boring my town is. They assure me that there isn++’t anything around here to eat, to see, or to do. For the most part, that’s fine with me. Keep the porch at Tresetti’s a relaxed place to sit and share a drink with friends. Save me an empty chair at Deva, and at least 8 ounces of whatever’s in the coffee thermos so I can sit down to some local talent at an Off The Airshow. And seats at The Ill List are hard to come by, but I’d like to think my odds are improved because everyone who can’t find anything to do in this town is off in the Bay Area, bellies full of some chain restaurant’s fair, washing down their bored looks with a watered down drink at some terrible club. This is my kind of town, and if you don’t want it… more for me, I guess. John Chimpo is on the air daily on B92.9 from 4-10.

It’s good to be back in the Modesto View! These gray valley days can be disheartening but the sun shines brightly on many local offerings. My husband and I attended a very edu-taining performance of Children of the Dust Bowl at the Martin Peterson Event Center benefitting The Stanislaus Literacy Center. The multi-media show performed by a talented cast of actors and musicians told the true story of a school at Weedpatch Camp in Kern County. It was a riveting and passionate story of one man’s courage to educate children of the Dust Bowl. The Literacy Center is recruiting community members to become tutors. Tutoring classes will begin soon. If you are interested or would like more information contact the Stanislaus Literacy Center at 5220656. What a great way to give back to our community by helping someone learn to read!

Don’t forget to visit the McHenry Museum and the McHenry Mansion. The admission is free. Both venues are open from noon to four o’clock Tuesdays through Sundays. The docents are friendly, knowledgeable, proud and enthusiastic about our local historical sites. Take time to shop at their gift stores. They offer one-of-akind treasures. Kaye Osborn retired from Lakewood School in 2009. She taught Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children for 34 years. Kaye continues directing the Lakewood Youth Theater and teaching the Lakewood Sign Club. She teaches American Sign Language at Modesto Junior College. Kaye is the Vice President of the McHenry Museum docents. She loves giving school tours to third graders at the museum. Kaye is passionate about exercise and with her husband Jerry loves gourmet cooking and taking Zumba classes. Keep your eyes open for a new theatrical group coming in May: The Central Valley Theater for the Deaf (CVTD).

What’s Growin’ on! By Wayne Zipser and Tom Orvis

Welcome to What’s Growin’ On! Let us introduce ourselves – we are Wayne Zipser and Tom Orvis of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau. But we are much more than that! Wayne grew up in the Ceres area on a family farm that grew grapes, peaches and almonds. He currently farms almonds in the eastern part of Stanislaus County as well as being the Executive Manager for Farm Bureau. Tom grew up on the family cattle ranch north of Oakdale. Tom currently is still involved in the family cattle operation and dabbles in his inlaws almond farming. He is currently the Governmental Affairs Director for Farm Bureau. Previously, we hosted the Saturday morning Farm Show on AM840 - The Patriot. We will attempt to lead you on a monthly adventure of agriculture in Stanislaus County and try to explain to you the things you see as you travel the freeways and back roads. We’ll try to explain why certain things are

happening at certain times of the year and how farming plays a role in your daily life. Our motto: If you eat, you’re involved in Agriculture! In February the annual farming cycle starts to awaken from its winter slumber. The orchards start humming with bees brought in from places as far away as Minnesota, Montana and Texas. You’ll notice the out-of state plates on flatbed trucks with small forklifts on trailers and even big semi trucks with the black netting covering their load. The bees are placed out at an average of two hives per acre to pollinate our almond trees. That sweet, floral smell of the white almond blossoms signifies the renewal of another season for farmers and maybe the renewal of allergy season for some people! They can be particular about their working conditions – seldom venturing out in the wet weather and in anything cooler than 55 degrees F. Their work is usually done when the blossoms fall from the trees. If you get too close to pollinating bees, you may even exterminate a few on your windshield – leaving the telltale

yellow streak! What is that yellow streak? It is the pollen that was headed back to the hive to make honey! Almonds are the second largest agricultural product in Stanislaus County, producing nearly 200 million pounds – ranking third in the state! California grows 80% of the world’s almonds and last year farmers produced a crop of over 1.5 billion pounds! Do you remember the old advertising slogan for Blue Diamond Growers - “A can a week is all we ask!”? Those were real almond farmers standing in the mountain of almonds! That picture was

taken at Blue Diamond in Salida! If you ate a can a week (6oz.) that would make 4 Billion cans – enough for you and nearly 77 million friends to eat a can a week! Our local crop is consumed right here in California and in excess of 90 different countries around the world such as places as far away as Japan, China, India, Germany and Afghanistan! Have some fun and venture north of the Stanislaus River to Ripon at the end of February for the annual Almond Blossom Festival. It is quite a fun family event!

Community Hospice? By Teri Collet MSW, LCSW, Director of Social Services, Community Hospice

At Community Hospice, patients and families often tell us, “I wish I had called you earlier.” Often, our patients come to us in crisis and at a very late stage in life. While hospice organizations are geared to operate at the end of life, we do our best work for families when there are months, not days, of life left. Doctor Gary Pickell, Medical Director for Community Hospice consults with a patient at Alexander Cohen Hospice House.”

This is because at Community Hospice we focus on supporting ill people and their families and helping them have quality of life for as long as possible. We are able to do this best when we have time to get to know the person, support the family and facilitate important conversations at the end of life. Community Hospice helps people who are choosing to not pursue lifeextending care for their illness or when their physician determines that the medical treatment will no longer offer a cure. When the physician believes that the ill person may have 6 months or less to live, that’s when hospice can step in and help. So how do you know when a loved one may be ready for hospice services? While everyone is an individual and experiences the later stage of their life in different ways, there are some common

What are the specific services provided by Community Hospice? • Physician visits to the patient in their home setting • Regular visits by nurses to provide symptom control, pain management and to educate patients and caregivers about physical care • Social Workers trained to support the emotional needs of the patient and the family • Spiritual support from interfaith chaplains • Assistance with bathing and personal care from home health aides • Visits from volunteers that provide temporary relief for family caregivers • Medication • Therapies • Medical equipment such as beds, commodes, wheelchairs • Short-term inpatient care at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House • Bereavement support for the family for up to a year following the loved one’s death • Specialized care for children with a life-threatening or severe illness threads we see. Consider the person’s energy level, appetite, sleep patterns and a comparison of their quality of life today with how they were a month ago, or even a week ago. (Using holidays

or other specific events helps to better mark these events.) We know when people experience changes on a monthly basis they may well have only months to live, weekly

changes may mean weeks to live. When someone is able to attend church one week, though is not able to sit that long the following week, it is often a sign that the illness is progressing and impacting quality of life. If hospice is not already helping, this is the time to call hospice. Community Hospice provides services daily to over 200 patients in Stanislaus, San Joaquin and Merced counties. Hospice patients are cared for in their private residences, skilled nursing homes, assisted living centers, and at the sixteen-bed Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson. Hospice services are covered 100% by Medicare and most private insurers. When there is a payment gap, Community Hospice provides care regardless of ability to pay. Fit for Fun By Efren Martinez

Dodge Ridge Ski Resort:

The Closest Snow to Home

By Kyle Montero Located a mere 80 miles northeast of Modesto, nestled in Stanislaus National Forest amidst the great Pines and Firs of the Sierra Nevadas, Dodge Ridge Ski Resort rightly earns its slogan “The Closest Snow to Home.” In addition, getting to this mecca of wintersports doesn’t demand driving over dangerous high-mountain passes. For those not wanting to tackle the abundant snowfall alone, the Dodge Ridge Ski Bus transports passengers 30 miles from Sonora to the slopes on weekends and holidays. The resort’s easy accessibility and above average snowfall for the season thus far make it the perfect winter destination. First opened to skiers in 1950 with a single lodge, chair lift, and rope tow, Dodge Ridge has progressed over their 60 year history, now featuring 832 skiable acres, two full service base lodges, one mid-mountain lodge, and 12 ski lifts accessing 62 runs. With an average snowfall range of 300 – 500 inches, the resort satisfies the hungriest of fresh powder searchers. Those with experience head to the back bowls of

24

Dodge’s Boulder Canyon, featuring a number of the most demanding, expert only runs in the Sierra Nevada. With three freestyle terrain parks, Dodge offers something for both the novice and expert alike. The Progression Park provides beginners with the chance to catch some air or slide a box. Stagecoach and Rocky’s Road Park beckon the intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders to their jumps, rails, boxes, and 14 foot wall ride. For beginners, Dodge’s Snowsports School offers private and group lessons as well as equipment rentals. Just outside the resort’s two base lodges rise Dodge’s easiest rated runs, providing novice skiers and boarders the chance to carve their first lines in the snow just outside the welcoming warmth of the Creekside Café, Boulder Bar, and North Fork Bistro. If skiing or snowboarding don’t spark your interest, the resort offers snowshoe rentals for those wanting to explore the snow-clad wilderness on foot. After a long day on the mountain, it is good to know that in leaving the “closest snow to home” you are returning to the “closest home to snow.”

It’s been a little over 2 years since we have all had the pleasure in opening Modesto’s one and only The Modesto View Magazine. I invite you to take a trip with me on my first piece here and I’ll ask you to forgive me if I get ahead of myself from excitement in the resurrection of Modesto’s got to have most sought out who’s your M.A.M.A magazine. Well Modesto Viewers here’s the skinny, this time around I will be mixing it up as us DJs do and will be spinning it off here. Fitness, a healthy lifestyle, in a fun silly DJ lingo. A positive view with a touch of local entertainment on the insidehere in the Quake View There is good news in going out to dinner these days. Modesto diet? Uh, NO! I prefer to call it nutrition and losing weight is as easy as counting calories. A couple of weeks ago I went out to dinner to The Outback Steak House and Disco. Disco? While I was sitting there looking over the menu, I noticed a number next to each entree. Not quite sure what I was looking at, so I asked the nice waitress with an Australian accent (Australian accent, go figure) what’s the deal with the number next the dish I’m eyeing. Well friends, its true. She informed me that as of the first of the year large chain restaurants are required by law to put the calorie count next to each entrée on the menu. WOW! How cool is that, talk about a 2nd helping hand to reach your nutrition goals while dinning out. As for myself , I usually go to locally owned restaurants, but the calorie count on each menu item was interesting as was the Disco. The Disco? So, if you’ve been to The Outback you have heard the 80’s music over the sound system. If you’re a man, chances are you’ve been to the men’s room there with the screaming loud speaker on the ceiling. In fact, its so loud, as I entered the wash room, I caught some guy looking into the mirror popping and locking to the fresh 80’s beats. Of course I couldn’t help myself. I suddenly found myself doing The Robot to Mr. Roboto by Styx on the way out. Smiles.

Flipping The Record Here to Side B as us DJs do, there’s fitness in The Super Bowl. Yes, that is right! So it’s Super Bowl Sunday and you know your going to eat big and party, who’s playing? . Lets party Modesto! But friends, plan on doing it guilt free on Super Bowl Sunday with the Doug Braasch Super Sunday Relays. Before you hit all those snacks, beer, snacks and more snacks, go into it knowing you started your Super Bowl Sunday Party off like a Super Bowl Champion. Sundaymorning at 8am I invite you to check out the 3rd annual Super Sunday Relays happening at Davis Park in Modesto. It’s a relay race, family friendly and consists of a (3 x 2 mile) & Kid’s Fun Run at Davis High School Park in Modesto. It’s cool if you don’t have a fast team, there will also be prizes for best costumes and best team name. Kick Off Super Bowl Sunday like a Champ in knowing you started it out in a healthy way. Not only do you get your Super Bowl fitness but also able to run for a great cause with part of the proceeds from the race to benefit Team Triumph, which helps cancer survivors. For more information, visit our friends at www. shadowchase.org for regular weekly run schedules and upcoming race info. Get fit and stay fit for 2011. Two other plays you might want to consider for that day. Don’t talk or scream with your mouth full. More people choke on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year and if you’ve had to much to drink after the big game, Dial 800 222-4357 AAA offers a Tipsy Tow Service for free. Thanks AAA In closing, I would like to send out a Happy 6th Birthday Shout Out to Queen Bean Coffee House. On January 8th ofthis year The Queen, Debra herself, staff and family quietly celebrated another thankful business year with the first Open Microphone show of the year. That’s right, its back for 2011 bigger and better than ever. Special thanks to Solo Bass Jake & Drew Blum for delivering Open Mic to your Queen Bean Coffeehouse every Sunday at 6PM. For Doug Braasch, even though your no longer with us, we can still feel your Spirit within us all at The Shadow Chase RunningClub.

The Beginning BY Ruben Porras

It hurts my feelings a bit when people talk down about Modesto. Sure, we have a high crime rate, a less than perfect job market and maybe a little car theft issue. That is true. That is also true in Stockton and thousands of other places. Modesto offers a bit of magic to me. This is a town I never wanted to visit that I ended up in by accident. This is a place I tried hard to hate. I really wanted no part of the central valley at all. Life pulls some hard punches once in a while and boulders seem to fall onto clear paths all the time. We all get lonely. We all get lost. Modesto never felt that way to me. After a while, I never felt lonely even when I was alone. Sure, I felt lost once in a while, but someone was always there with a

We Love Modesto continued from page 1

first thing to do is check out daily event calendar for some ideas or sign up for our twitter www.twitter.com/modestoview or some ideas texted to you. Grab some friends, spread the word and get out and check out the galleries, hit happy hour for appetizers at a local restaurant before heading home for the evening, check out a local band and buy their CD, show your kids the McHenry Museum or the Mansion or get all dressed up to see a vintage film at the State Theatre. There is really no limit to the number of things to do. If you are completely bored, you can sit and browse our gallery of Modesto pictures all sorted in on of the biggest Modesto photo galleries anywhere! In ModestoView each month we will cover nightlife, locally owned restaurants, local music, give you local cocktail and food recipes, give you peace and green ideas, hook you up for some local theatre culture, lay some cool poetry on you, introduce you to people in the Greater Modesto Area that are making things happen and shaking it up. So much to read and learn. If you have ideas on things we should

kind word. That was cool. That saved me. Do yourself a huge favor. The next time you feel lost and lonely, head for J Street. Walk around for a while. Take in the cool downtown vibe. Stop in and say hi to George and his family at Tokyo Express and eat some great sushi or Chinese food. Tell George that Ruben recommended the “Starbucks Special.” It’s not on the menu but its amazing. Get lost for a while and shop for beads with Holly at Beads of Contentment. Take in an Indie film at the State Theatre and say hi to Sue. Finish the day with coffee in the loft at Serrano Social Club where Tony and his rebellious crew of wild-eyed gourmets serve up old family recipes in the midst of art work by local cult favorites like Fasm. You will walk back to your car with a fresh bottle of wine that you bought at Tresetti’s from Mitch and you will be happy. That’s how this place works. That’s where I feel the magic.

Just a note - There was no need to use last names in this article. These are all down to Earth people that would like you to be a friend. That’s just how they roll I suppose. Economies fluctuate and people change and that is happening here also. Let’s pony up a few bucks and get out and support the locals. Modesto has a constant flow of art shows, a steady beat of music and a great dance and film scene. My job with Modesto View is to help you find the places under the places in the strangest of places and I will do that for as long Modesto View lets me. It’s nice to be back in Modesto. I missed you. Let’s have some fun.

Ruben Porras is also known as ModestoFamous in some circles. He has been in and out of Modesto for about the last eight years. He is a bit of a survivor that suffers from wanderlust more than anything. He pays his bills by writing words, spreading the word and making people laugh. Follow Him. Friend him. Nice guy. be covering, please let me know at chrism@modestoview.com So, don’t wake up on Monday morning and find out you missed all the fun things to do. Be a part of the active local scene that has something for every age group. You don’t have to be 22 years old to enjoy the downtown nightlife and you don’t have to be 50 to enjoy the history of Modesto and our American Graffiti heritage. If you are under 21, there are man things to explore and do with your friends. Modesto will surprise you if you take a look at what is here. We love Modesto and hope you do to.

MCW Trio. (I love that name), Blues Box Zydeco Band, and many others. The lineup for February: Monday 7th: Valley Rhythm Section, Monday 14th Valentine’s Day with monster Jazz guitarist of international acclaim John Stowell with house band Johnny Valdez and straight Ahead, Thursday 17th Art Walk with the mighty Tim Allen on piano and keys, Sunday 20th MOFO PARTY BAND, Monday 21st Eric Benson & Ultra Lounge, Sunday 27th The Sensations with Penny Gail-White, Alzheimer’s Society fund raiser, and Monday 28th the MCW Band. The Clarion Hotel located on 1612 Sisk Road has started a Thursday Spoken Word and live music event. Don’t be mislead by the title, it is a nice showcase featuring the Cartel Band, (seasoned R & B band), playing some amazing music with vocals and great soloists. The event is promoted by Jai of Thin Line Productions and goes from 8:00-12:00 PM. The Clarion also will have a Valentine Day dance with my favorite R & B Band the Valley Rhythm Section on Saturday February 12th from 9:00 PM -1:00 AM. Call for mo info: 209-521-1612. The State Theatre has some nice offerings coming up. On February 4th Tower Of Power is coming back with some seasoned East Bay grease for an 8:00 show and February 25th Robin Trower is doing his guitar slinging show. Check out: www.thestate.org. Or call 209-527-4697 The Barkin’ Dog Grill has Threlle Productions presenting some great Blue’s showings on Fridays. They have brought in Ron Hacker, Mike Hammer and the Nails, MOFO Party Band to name a few. Call the Dog for more info: 209-572-2341. Sips Bistro and Wine shop on Carpenter road features small group live entertainment on Sunday afternoons from 6:00-8:00 PM. Come down for a

glass of vino and stay for the food and music. Call Diane at Sips for mo info: 209-527-7477. New on the scene is the Saint Clair Theatre at 417 7th Street. The Theatre showcase is anice 150 capacity venue with nice stage and full bar that showcases live Jazz, Soul, R & B, Blues, Poetry, Comedy, Reggae, and theatrical productions. The Valley Rhythm Section returns to the theatre on Saturday March 26th for a night of Rhythm and Blues, and Soul with dance floor. Call 209-416-0259 for mo info. Soon to be on the scene will be the Board Room located at J street and 16th street on the corner. The Boardroom looks to be a nice Bar catering to the working professionals with promises of live Jazz and quality music for listening. And the mighty John Griswold has launched his new web site to promote local live music in the Central Valley at: http://www.eArtsnews.com. Reg Evans and the Central Valley Music Group bring regional and international acts to local venues. For 2010 a sampling included Legally Blind, Larry Carlton, Malo, Pete Escovedo, and many smooth Jazz acts. Shoot Reg an email to get hooked up: Reg@Centralvalleymusicgroup.com Buck’s Music is back open being run by Jim Denoon, a family member who wants to continue the tradition of Buck’s Music. Jim is a smoking guitar player who can play & teaches just about any style and has played in Vegas for years. Phone Buck’s at 209-576-1330, or email Jim at: Jdjazzguitar@yahoo. com Buck’s is open 6 days a week. And please remember to support our local music stores, Skip’s Music, Barker’s Music, Langlois, & Gottschalk Music Center. You can contact me at: Mbenson@ fire2wire.com, or call me at 209-9187033. If you want to be on a weekly email send out of all the live events in the downtown shoot me an email. Please feel free to be my friend or at least my acquaintance on Facebook, I am Eric Benson.
