The Independent Guide to Modesto area since 1997

M o d e s t o , U S A

You can say that it is the green tinted sunglasses or it is the bright sun shining on the green of the hills and the fields around Modesto, but March is really a sign of rebirth, renewal and the seasonal explosion of everything colorful and exciting. The mornings are light, the evenings are longer, the patios of the restaurants are full, the menus are fresh with local produce and the sounds of live music sneaks out from the cafes, nightclubs and stages everywhere. March is exciting and we come more alive everyday. I was standing in line at the local propane tank, filling my BBQ tank and everyone was thinking the same thing, time to be outdoors, time to breath and time to explode in spring freshness. We can’t forget that this year, March is home to two huge exciting holidays, Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day. It is crazy to celebrate in French New Orleans style and then transition into green beer drinking Irish festivities. Nice to be a Murphy in March. This month, we will hook you up with some fun festivities, some amazing youth theater, fabulous performances at the Gallo Center, West Side Theatre and our gorgeous State Theatre. The crew of Fat Cat, Copper Rhino, Jax and

Aqua keep the DJ house music events thumpin’ like Sonny Fodera on the 25th. The Jazz is blazing at the Barkin Dog, Jax, Shooters/Clarion and more places each month add music to their agenda

like Fuzio and Vito’s. This means that every day, it gets more fun to go out and about in the Greater Modesto area and enjoy the fun that is served up daily. The Modesto City Council has

just decided that it is time. Yes, it is time for Modesto to take its rightful place as Modesto, USA, home of the Historic Cruise Route. Soon, visitors from Modesto, the region and around the world will come to see that the true brand of Modesto is the home of American Graffiti and it is time to make it happen. Soon, the global press of the world will descend on Modesto for the Amgen Tour Stage 3 and they will see the most elite cyclists speed along the streets made famous in the amazing George Lucas film. You can hear John Milner’s Deuce Coupe echo in the vintage streets. Already, tourists from Canada, Europe, and all across America come to town, looking for their very own slice of Modestocana served Graffiti Style. It is such an exciting time. Finally, our New Year’s resolutions to get in shape gain transformer-size-mega importance as the Modesto Marathon rolls into town, swim and track season gets underway, and we get to know three-time Olympian and Modesto local Suzy Powell as she gears up for a shot at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Stay fit, stay fun, stay excited and stay connected with all of the fun things to do here in Modesto, USA. Read up and have fun and enjoy your Modesto days.

editors note Greetings ModestoFans: It is amazing, we are here for the second issue of ModestoView Magazine version 2.0. Greg and Kyle Cobb Becky and Chris have been hitting ..the streets and we say a special thank you to our advertisers that helped bring ModestoView back to it’s full color 32 page splendor. The response has been so amazing and thank you so much for the encouraging emails, letters and comments. John Surla commented that new people were dining in his restaurant because of the ModestoView interview and now Lumpia is a Modesto household word. There are so many good things to see and do here. We can fight back against non-thinking-statistic driven-robot publications like Forbes that are so disturbingly clueless about the daily lives in the communities they rank. We have Art, Music, Schools, Celebrities, Sports, American Graffiti, Community, Volunteers, Festivals and so many things that make us a top city. We have sent the editors of Forbes a copy of ModestoView and laid down the demand that they visit our city before they ever rank us again. Big corporate writers at big corporate desks in big corporate cities need to get a clue on living and loving in a community like ours. We are already making changes to make ModestoView even more interesting. This month, we add a new fashion column and we welcome back Javier Lopez that will connect us with the local Urban scene that can be found at the Palladium and Modesto Sports bar. There is so much talent here in town. You most definitely need to check out the new ModestoView.com website. Complete new design, new articles, new columns, new format, new information and a great calendar to keep you connected. Thanks to Noah and Elliot for making it happen. So much is new, so much is exciting and there is so much more to do to make our community even better. I know you want to hook up and make it happen too. 12 Questions

Chef Eric Jegoux --- JAX on H

By Rick Serpa

Mitch and Tammy Maisetti know a little something about the downtown dining scene. They opened Tresetti’s World Café, one of Modesto’s favorite restaurants in 1994; that’s 16 years of continued success. They made a commitment to downtown Modesto before being downtown was cool! In October 2010 they opened JAX on H, a casual restaurant and bar that offers delicious food at very affordable prices. Think delectable comfort food: meatloaf, chicken pot pie, spicy fried chicken, and a smothered pork chop are among their ‘blue plate classics.’ The man in the kitchen preparing these delicious entrees is Chef Eric Jegoux, a native of France. He’s classically trained and a veteran of some of the culinary capitals of the world. ModestoView (MV) sat down with Chef Eric (CE) before his dinner rush to ask him 12 very important questions.

JAX on H

MV: When did you decide to become a chef? CE: Indirectly my mother inspired me. When I was very young I was always intrigued by food. How do you make it look good, and more importantly, how did you make it taste good? Unfortunately my mom wasn’t very good at it. Since food is part of the culture in France I decided that I wanted to do it better. MV: Tell our readers about your training. CE: When I was 15 years old I served a 3-year apprenticeship back home in France. It included three 6

To round out the table I would invite Lou Reed (Take a walk on the wild side) from one of my favorite bands The Velvet Underground. The appetizer would be sardines in olive oil. For the entrée I would prepare chicken cordon bleu. To finish the meal we would have an apple tart along with coffee and cognac. MV: Where do you like to go out to eat in Modesto? CE: Surla’s! They have some of the best appetizers in town. The lumpia and the duck buns are fantastic! Also Tresetti’s. I love the “world café” concept and the variety of the menu. MV: What do you like to do in your spare time CE: I love spending time with my wife and three kids. We have 11 year old twin daughters and a 9 year old son. I also like to ride my Harley up and down the valley. Tresetti’s

927 11th Street, Modesto 209.572.2990 . www.tresetti.com By Kate Serpa

Tresetti’s is one of my two top go-to bars in Modesto: it’s classy, unpretentious, and perfect for damn near any occasion. How do I describe a bar I truly love? Tresetti’s has all the right elements: a well-rounded liquor list, an extensive wine shop attached (sporting over 1,000 bottles), loyal and interesting clientele, a great, great patio for downtown people-watching, excellent bartenders…. there’s so much more, but unfortunately I have a word limit.

I’ve heard about, but have never had the opportunity to try his signature 9-shot multicolored Rainbow Shot, but I intend to change that very soon.

He also tells me he’s poured out by Anthony Dorn. Dorn has a board fanatic: snowboarding, surfing been in the restaurant industry for 19 and skateboarding. Since my hand-eye years, bartending for 13 of those years,

coordination is next to nil and I can’t pour a proper drink to save my life, I’m pretty impressed by Dorn and wonder if, between everything he does, the man ever sleeps. Dorn’s favorite bar in Modesto happens to be Tresetti’s; we have this in common. Why is it his/my favorite? It’s at the heart of downtown and is an ideal location for cocktails and conversation. Though Dorn’s favorite drink happens to be quite simple (Crown and Coke), the drinks he pours out are anything but. I’ve heard about, but have never had the opportunity to try his signature 9-shot multicolored Rainbow Shot, but I intend to change that very soon. Don’t stress though if you’re a simple drinker; between Tresetti’s ample bar and Dorn’s skill, even a whiskey-soda is guaranteed

to be perfection. And don't forget about all of that fantastic wine... Tresetti’s was one of the first bars established in downtown Modesto, and it seems as though the rest of downtown has grown around it. Tresetti’s plays a significant role in the events downtown, including the upcoming Fat Tuesday party (which I am very excited about attending), and is walking distance away from the Fat Cat and Gallo Center. I love Tresetti’s; the great atmosphere and dining, the lovely cocktails and great bartenders like Dorn will always keep it at the top of my list. Kate is a writer and musician in Modesto, CA. (A champagne-infused kiwi tequila cocktail, an Anthony Dorn Original!) Here’s what you need: 1 peeled kiwi 1 lime 1 oz Don Julio Tequila 1 oz Simple Syrup approx. 3 oz of champagne Here’s what you do: 1.Combine and muddle the first two ingredients. Do it with some feeling. 2.Combine the tequila and simple syrup. 3.That was exhausting! Better take a quick shot yourself before continuing. 4.Better? Shake it up and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. 5.Here’s the best part: Fill up the rest of the glass with champagne. Garnish with a lime wedge on the side and enjoy! Interesting Cocktail Fact: Anthony Dornthought it was rare to see tequila in martini, so he made up the Key Max. I will admit: this white girl cannot (repeat: cannot) handle her tequila, and I will admit when Dorn told me it was a tequilabased cocktail, my liver began to shake a bit. Dorn told me while making my Key Max that he believes it to be an art to make a smooth tequila mixed drink, and I tell you the boy has been doing his homework. This drink was delightfully bubbly, fruity, and such a fun hue of green it was near impossible not to love.

Suzy Powell

World Famous Athlete, 3 Time Olympian, Full Time Rotarian, And Regular Modesto Citizen By Chris Murphy

Modesto is in the groove right now for international celebrity. Besides being known as the home of George Lucas, American Graffiti and Carol Channing, and Royal Robbins, superstars like Tim Olyphant, Jeremy Renner and James Marsters are all on the big and little screen. Our local athletes like Ali Cox Erin Cafaro and Tisha Venturini and Suzy Powell have conquered around the world. One of these athletes walks among us daily, all the while, planning her return to the Olympic stage. Suzy Powell, world famous athlete, 3 time Olympian, full time Rotarian, and regular Modesto citizen agreed to spend some time with ModestoView. Let’s get to know Suzy.

MV: OK, why the discus? SP: My career began at age ten while running for a local track club. My father noticed my ability to throw things far and suggested throwing the discus. I tried the discus throw if only to please my dad. MV: Is there something that inspired you, as this is one of the original ancient Olympic events? SP: Not at first, I just enjoyed throwing things, pleasing my dad, and Slurpees after practice when I threw well. MV:When you were 5, what did you want to be when you grew up? SP: Wow! Pretty sure I thought my sister and Fonzie from “Happy Days” were the two coolest people, so maybe some sort of hybrid of the two. MV: When did you first know that you would want to/ or could be an Olympic caliber athlete. SP: I distinctly remember watching the 1984 LA Olympics at my friend’s house. I must have been 7 years old (September birthday), and I remember watching Carl Lewis and Jackie Joyner Kersee perform. It was the first time I understood what the Olympic Games were all about.

12

I was fascinated by the magnitude of the event, it seemed like such an important event. The first time I started to know I could or would be an Olympian was my freshman year at Downey. My freshman summer (1991) at 14 years old, I made the Junior National Team (19yrs old and under to be considered a Junior). I was on the team with mostly college freshman, so people five years older. The team spent 21 days in Europe with the final meet in Salamanca, Spain. If you recall, the 1992 Olympics were in Barcelona, and so the whole country was preparing and excited. In fact, ourcompetition in Spain was a practice or dress rehearsal for the Spanish officials and meet management. It was that summer when I thought that maybe the 1996 Olympics could be a reality for me. MV: How has your life changed since you became an Olympian? SP: I remember when I made my first Olympic Team in 1996. I was 19 and had just finished my sophomore year at UCLA. After the competition, I was having dinner with my family, and my sister in law said, “your life just changed forever, today.” In the

whirlwind of excitement of making the team just a few hours before, I had not even considered what just happened. She was right, my life would change forever, I would now be known as an Olympian. People ascribe a certain respect and esteem for that particular achievement. Why else would you be interviewing me today? In terms of financial rewards, however, becoming an Olympian did not change a single thing. I wasstill a scholarship athlete at UCLA, and thus could not accept financial rewards for competing, as it would have jeopardized my NCAA eligibility. In the world of discus throwing, it’s a far better idea to respect your scholarship obligations, finish your education, and worry about “making money” in the sport with a college degree in your hand. MV: What is the toughest part about training for Olympic level competition? SP: Being able to work hard and make sacrifices toward accomplishing a desired outcome, when current circumstances or situations do not support your

vision. Simply put, having faith in the process. For me this requires much prayer and faith in God. MV: What is the hardest thing to give up when you are in the serious training mode? SP: Time with family and friends. Training and competing requires travel and intense focus. It’s impossible to be present or available for every family function or party when I am in this mode. MV: What frustrates you the most? SP: That there is only 24 hours in a day, I have a tendency to overschedule myself. MV: Where is the most beautiful place you have every competed? SP: Let’s see, in terms of stadium settings, I would have to say Rethymno, Crete at the University of Crete, Greece. Although the stadium is modest, it is on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. MV: When you are on the road at meets, what do you miss most about Modesto? SP: My husband, Tim, and our two dogs, Miss Daisy and Mr. B. MV: What do you think will give you that extra special edge as you

train for 2012? SP: It is a combination of things: desire, experience, family support, and support from people and businesses in our city. MV: Secret Favorite Junk food? SP: I feel as though I am confessing to a crime. Let me put it this way, if we are at the cabin during a nice summer weekend, and there is a box of Cheese-Its hanging around, chances are good I will destroy that box! MV: Did you ever cruise in Modesto? SP: Not on purpose. MV: When you travel, what do people think about Modesto? SP : It really depends on where I am in. In foreign countries, most people have never heard of Modesto, so near San Francisco usually helps people understand. My favorite scenario is when they (people unfamiliar with Modesto) get our wine growing region confused with Napa, and you know what? I just go with it! MV: Are you excited that Modesto is the home of American Graffiti? SP: I understand the older generations really love and identify

See Suzy Powell and her Olympian Hometown Hero friends in a community conversation at with that part of SP: If you really the Gallo Center Modesto history. want to be a champion on As for me, well, not in your sport (business, March 5 so much. I think my life, etc), you must

generation maybe missed the boat on the true American Graffiti experience. I think it is nice that our town has something positive to hang its hat on, but it’s just not me. I get more excited that Modesto is home to great companies and like Gallo Wine, Foster Farms, Tactical 5.11, Prime Shine, Don’s Mobile Glass, Pacific Southwest Container, Gallo Center for the Arts, and, of course, our world famous agriculture industry. MV: What is your idea of the perfect evening in Modesto? SP: Dinner with my husband at one of our excellent downtown restaurants, then a show at the Gallo Center, and last but certainly not least, Bananas Foster at DEWZ. It is the best dessert known to man, especially if Scott starts getting fancy with the sauce making. Also, an evening on the Party Deck at the Nuts game is a great way to spend a summer evening Modesto. MV: What advice would you give to the aspiring athlete?

dedicate every fiber of your being to the endeavor. You must become a student of the sport. You must be willing to endure and suffer to achieve greatness. musicview Not Just an Irish band By Ian Hill

We should probably start with what The Black Irish Band is not. It is not just an Irish band. Sure, Irish is in the name of the Sonora quintet, which is set to perform March 11-13 at the 25th Sonora Celtic Faire and on March 17, St. Patrick's Day, in Carmel. And yes, the band has Irish influences and Celtic tunes in its playlist. But that's not all the band performs. "The band's sound would be best described as a melting pot of American folk," said Patrick Karnahan, a multi-instrumentalist who helped found the group. "Not so modern, but more like California New York in the 1850s."You can hear that sound on the band's website, www. blackirish.com, and watch videosfrom performances at www.youtube.com/trainfire28. In a recent discussion via email Karnahan talked about The Black Irish Band's albums, fans and how thegroup might owe its existence to a well-known time-traveling teen.

Songs on theradio are so over-produced these days, and always about the same subject matter. We are the last hold out for songs about heroes. This idea is not new however. The base of our music subject is rooted in the Celtic bards of old Ireland, or even classic Homer. We are not into the fast bar-hook-up songs, we deal with real-life past and present folk heroes. MV: The band's been together for 20 years now. How has it changed over the years? PK: 21 years this last October in fact. I would say that the music has not changedthat much. We have had the addition of a fiddle in the last 10 years, but that is it. We pride ourselves on keeping the tradition alive and not selling out to

the cover band ideal. One foot in the past and one in the present would be a good way to put it. Some of our songs date back to 1600s, and some as late as 1995. If we hear a present song that fits with our style, we will add it. Years ago there was a band out of Ireland, The Water Boys - we added some of their modern songs because they fit! MV: What does the band have planned for the rest of 2011? PK: Tours throughout the west in the summer, and a few in the fall. We might go back to Washington D.C. to perform the original song I wrote for the National Christmas tree at the White House. We will also produce the first Black Irish Christmas CD album to support the theme.

metalview 209’s Best Local Hard/Rock & Metal CD’s By mike vanek

A lot of bands today, either due to lack of venues, or just sheer need to get their music out, seem to be pumping out CD’s these days to get their sound heard. I’ve recently come across a few that I think deserve some recognition. I’ll be covering more local projects in the future, for sure!

Warpath Assassins. 1.Warpath Assassins-5 Song Demo(Unmastered Version) Warpath Assassins debuted last year to a lot of fanfare! Featuring former members of Disillude, Thr3efold, & Skin 4 Julia, this local super group has

been hard at work on their debut album. This five song demo is just a sampling of what’s to come. It’s a throwback to the glory days of Modesto metal with Jason James vocals that display why he has been one of the areas best metal singers for the past several years. This record is very technical and complements their high-energy live show. The band recently played packed shows with The Dead Kennedys andSkinlab. This is one of Modesto’s best new bands! Check out Warpath Assassins on Facebook and reverbnation.com 2.Sworn to The Black-3 Song Demo I have known a couple of these guys

for a really long time and this CD puts a smile on my face! There is nothing on this demo that is not bone-crushing metal! Featuring former members of SEIP and Beyond All Brutality, this will be a favorite of Soulfly fans as well as Modesto Area death metal kids. When All Ages venues return, expect to see this band rise among the top of local metal. These guys filled this demo with catchy licks and well placed solo’s that will blow your mind! My favorite part is the very technically crushing drums of former SEIP/Epidemia Drummer, Pelon. Man, the way the drums are laid out show why he is, and always has

been, one of the Valley’s best drummers. I love how he and the bass player work so well together. Match that with mindbending vocals and a sick guitar attack, these guys will definitely be a band you want to see soon! Check out Sworn to The Black on Facebook & Myspace 3.California MedicationDead Naked Chicks This is a CD I like to think I had a part in making. These guys used funds from winning our $1000 Battle of The Bands and it sounds killer! Cal-Med is

radioView Best Burgers in Town or, Scott Bartenhagen and the Meat Quest By John Chimpo, Radio Station B92.9

Scott Bartenhagen and I sit down at what we’re told is the magnetic center of downtown Modesto’s Barking Dog Grill. The chairs reduce him quite admirably, considering his imposing height, but as soon as Scott opens his mouth, you forget all about how he towers over you. “How’s the chi at this table?” I ask if he means feng shui. “Feng shui, yeah. How’s the feng shui?” Assured by our waiter that, in addition to its magnetic centeredness, our table does indeed possess fantastic feng shui, we sit down to what I’ve promised him is the best burger in Modesto. I hope I’m right. Local songwriter Scott Bartenhagen and I are in search of the best burger in Modesto, but our story begins quite a few years ago. As young as he is now (in a phone conversation just before arriving, he forgets briefly that we could meet at a bar, now that he is 21), he was practically a babe in arms when

him into trickling warm tones that compliment his style and subject matter. It dawns on you eventually that it’s his content: surely, such a young man can’t sing so earnestly, and with such a twinkle in his eye, about such mature subject matter. You can’t do it: he is absolutely sincere, as though his soul contains the knowledge of several lifetimes. I’m mid-question as he takes the first bite of his burger, his eyes rolling back in his head. I fall silent, awaiting his judgment. “Can I just do this for a second?” I tell him to take his time. “Actually, I might need to take another bite.” Scott chews thoughtfully, and swallows before pronouncing it the best burger in Modesto. We’re here because burgers figure strongly into his current mindset. He tells me of a fateful trip to a burger joint, by himself, where he decided he was just going to try it with everything on there. All of the accoutrements he usually

lettuce and tomato could be so delicious on a burger before that,” he says, and I know he can taste it on his memory. “So now, I’ve just stopped saying no. I don’t say no to all kinds of stuff now.” It’s an auspicious mental frame to be in, for a young man in his position. He’s caught the attention of several worthy patrons, whose identities he asked me to keep off the record, but it sounds like they’ve got him pointed in the right direction: if all goes according to plan, he’ll play the Taylor Guitars showcase at Austin’s South by Southwest. He’s perched on the cusp of manhood, of success, and of self-realization. He grins, washing down a bite of his new favorite hamburger. “I just have to keep saying yes.” Listen to Scott Bartenhagen’s music at scottbartenhagen.com, try one of the fantastic burgers at The Barking Dog Grill, on 11th St. between I and J in Modesto.

The amount of amazing paintings I’ve seen on display downtown lately has made the art scene unignorable. This brand-spanking-new column hopes to briefly highlight some of the local talent. I saw one of Benny’s paintings before I met him, and I stared at it for a considerable stretch of time. I was struck by the color usage and free, complex style. Since meeting him, I see his work constantly showcased in other’s homes and each piece seems to demand its own attention without being overpowering. Benny, like his work, is a genuine and complex. About his art: “When I set out to paint I fall into it and don’t know where it’s going to take me. My intention is to create something I’ve never seen before and something internal always seems to emerge. I’ll hear people viewing my work and it sounds like their staring at clouds. It’s eye-candy. You’re supposed to chew on it a while.” I think my paintings are a good re-

This event, where you can visit artists in their studios, features 53 artists in Modesto, and around the county in Turlock, Oakdale, Riverbank, Ceres, Waterford and a stop across the county line in Manteca. Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Travel and Tourism Roundtable, the $10 passport/ maps for the two day tour are available at the Modesto, Turlock and Oakdale Convention and Visitors Bureaus, and several of our local galleries and other local art and civic organizations. To find out where to obtain a passport/map closest to you, call 209 554 6924. A recording will greet you, and a volunteer will return your call to get you your Passport and map. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm both Saturday and Sunday. The Air Mail 100 show will be open through March 6 at McHenry Museum. March is time to reserve a spot for Modesto Art Museum’s Architectural tours, that for a nominal contribution, depart from Anderson Frame Shop and Gallery downtown, to points of architectural and historic interest. Open spots were still available for April 9 at http://modestoartmuseum.org The Almond Blossoms members show is up at the Central California Art Association/Mistlin Gallery. This is a non-juried show where they rotate new works in course of show, as pieces sell. The gallery is opening up more classes and activities. Check in with the gallery docent desk, and look at the brightly

colored month coded class calendars, to see what is available, or call in (209) 529-3369. Mistlin Gallery is located at 1015 J Street. Activity of note is the April 2 deadline to enter the CCAA Spring Show in June. The Chartreuse Muse will continue showing “A Little Bit of Whimsy.” A group show elebrating the whimsical side of life. This show features the art of: Sandra Veneman, Corey West, Pam Ackles, Yvonne Porcella, Kathey Amaral, Anastasia Bespalova and Nicole Slater and an artist talk is scheduled for March 17 as part of Downtown Modesto Third Thursday Art Walk. Art Walk in February was one of those rainy winter nights, where the art was good, the diehards outaplenty in some venues, but light on overall attendance. The new Art Walk map will show a larger route with fifteen stops. Among them will be Jax on H Street, and the return of Tim Allen and Joe Barretta with various artists and crayons to draw on and a possible showing of some of the Adamantine Belly Dancers. Get a new map so you find all the right places, or check in with www.modestoartwalk.com for the online revision. Strong shows for the month have been the Martin Baker paintings at Serrano Social Club, Eric Hawkinson’s paintings at Barkin Dog grill and multi student the CSU Stanislaus student gallery 909 on 10th St. Martin’s pretty easy to access, but with the new semester open at Stan State, the

California Medication. a super fun band from Stockton that is four hard working guys from Stockton & Modesto that make really good songs. It’s so hard to put this band in one genre because they are all over the board musically! This band will play anytime they are called upon and they are one of the most real bands you will ever meet! Regulars at my house, these guys will chill with just about anyone at one of their shows and some of the best conversations happen on the tailgate of their drummer Steve’s truck! This band mixes hard rock with funk, metal, punk & the kitchen sink! This is soon to be one of Northern California’s top bands and beyond! I highly recommend seeing them live at a venue near you and simply ask for a copy of this CD and theywill happily give you one! Find California Medication on Facebook & Myspace. February is behind us, March is here, and spring is at our doorstep. The weather is changing, the sun is starting to shine more often, and our winter wonderland is giving way to spring rainbows. Spring brings new life with bright colors to enlighten our senses and energies. The changing season also means a necessary boost to our wardrobe. Floral print and bright colored pieces are a must this season. A popular 2011 Spring runway trend is mixing bright colors together to achieve the most extreme level of unique flair. These types of styles can be simple to create and easily found in our own neighborhoods. Spring fashion is most popular for the endless variety of floral prints. One store that is stocked with floral designs is Affection Clothing, and the name says it all. Colorful, lacy, silky, flowing floral prints have filled the racks here. Affection definitely has the feel and style of Forever 21, but is a perfect locally owned alternative. It’s modern, colorful, versatile, and very reasonable. The styling associates do an amazing job of coordinating the best eye-pop

ping jewelry, belts, pins, and scarves with trendy blouses to create fully accessorized outfits throughout the store. They carry super cute handbags, belts, boots, heels, sparkly costume jewelry, and more. This is a perfect stop to help you achieve a beautiful spring inspired wardrobe. Affection Clothing, in Ceres on Mitchell Rd., Turlock on Countryside Drive, and Citi Wear is the original store in Modesto on McHenry. Remember to wear green to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day and if you don’t listen then don’t be upset when you get pinched. (Just kidding!) Dressing up is always so much fun, its one of the best parts of celebrating. So, when Saint Patrick’s Day comes along I like to go all out with my green and clover inspired wardrobe. Some of the most popular costumes rented out for the annual Fat Tuesday celebration are the Jester, Renaissance, High Colonial, 20‘s style Zoot suits, and Flapper dresses. are a hit. Beth can add in the themed Mardi Gras purple, green, and gold colors into each costume with accessories like masques, beads, jewels, glitters, and face paint to make an overall perfect ensemble. The St. Patrick’s Day costumes are adorable as well, perfect for Lucky Fest.

What’s Growin’ on! By Wayne Zipser and Tom Orvis

The almond blossoms lie on the floor of the orchards like a white carpet. The farmer's now play the waiting and guessing game ... Did the bees do their jobs? Did it rain before the buds set? Will we have a hard frost that could wipe out the crop? When is the right time for the first irrigation? All of these things are going on in the minds of the almond growers while you drive by and admire those white petals on the ground and the sprouting green leaves in the trees. But almonds aren't the only crop in the Valley. Cherries are blooming, putting out those gorgeous pink blossoms. Walnuts are blooming out with their catkins. What is a catkin, you ask? The catkin is the bloom of the walnut and looks like a fuzzy green caterpillar hanging from the branch. See – walnuts are self-pollinating and don’t need bees to create the walnut. You’ll also notice the aerial applicators flying through the air more

frequently. But what are they doing? It could be pollen, fertilizer, spray, seed or a myriad of other things. Many of the crops are just starting but the heavy moisture in the air creates opportunities for molds, mildews and fungi in the crops just like in your home. If the ground is too wet to drive on, call in the planes and helicopters. Today’s aircraft are much different from the old barnstorming “crop dusters” of years gone by. In the old days you often saw someone in a white protective suit standing at the end of the field with an orange flag to guide the pilots in. Flash forward to 2011 – the pilots have been flying by Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) for the last 20 years. What does GPS do? It makes the application more accurate, uses less crop protection materials and reduces exposure for employees. And guess what – farmers have tractors that operate on GPS as well. While we are on the topic of crop protection materials – AKA chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides

– realize that California is the strictest state in the union when it comes to approval, registration, application and training. The materials that are used in agriculture are applied by people that are certified in their use and who report all of the material used – on a crop by crop and field by field basis. Many materials need to be approved for use by the local Agricultural Commissioner. Agricultural Commissioners also certify the applicators and there use of safe practices as well as being the local enforcement agency for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). Did you know that on a total pounds used basis, the California farmers use less crop protection materials than the general public?! DPR monitors this and has found this to be the case in recent history. And the farmers and applicators are trained and can only use specific amounts in specific situations. They are also responsible for where any runoff may go from their farms. When you apply rose food, fertilize

your lawn with a bug killer or spray for weeds, do you know where your runoff goes? I bet it ends up in the rivers. Do you ever look at the label and think to yourself, “this is the application rate but hey – more is better!” Have you taken training classes and need to be relicensed every 3 years to apply those chemicals? No - I didn’t think so. Enjoy the sunshine and remember that the snowpack in the Sierra is our giant reservoir. We have been blessed this year with lots of rain and snow but as we saw in January, it only takes a few weeks of dry weather to get nervous again. We do live in California and we are always a few weeks away from a drought! Thanks for reading and we look forward to next month! Remember to support your local farmers and the products grown here because farmers feed families! It really does make a difference in your daily life! Stanislaus County Agriculture! See It! Feel It! Run, Walk, Jog! Its All Healthy Modesto

Yes, size does matter. Especially when it comes to a food serving. Ever wonder what’s in that package or energy bar. Well, much to my surprise, there is enough calories in that cleverly disguised fitness snack/drink for two servings. So I’m at the gym and I forgot to pack my protein shake in my bag. No worries right, I’ll just buy one here. Good thing I forgot my shake, while I was looking over the selection of the many popular protein shakes in the fridge I happen to noticed the calorie count on one of 180 with only 23 grams of protein. OK cool, but wait! I have to drink the whole thing to get those 23grams of protein that has two servings per container. That’s

right, 2 servings per shake. So, that’s 180 calories times two. Well you don’t have to do the math to figure out that’s too many calories per shake for only 23 grams of protein. Modesto Viewers, this is just a small sample of what you need to know before you bite into your next package supplement or even eat that healthy can of soup. Soup? That’s right, recently I found myself at the local grocery store and noticed that this is the normal practice, two servings in one package for just about everything. Suddenly, that can of soup isn’t such a healthy pick after all if you consume the whole thing you have had 2 servings. Don’t forget those tarts that pop, they are packaged in sets of

Although the brisk weather may have you peering out the window, clutching your favorite coffee mug, and wrapped inside the Snuggie you said you would never wear, Modesto offers a range of outdoor activities capable of warming the winter cold. So, give your heater a rest and embrace the outdoors as a second home. A great place to start exploring is Dry Creek Trail, running parallel to Scenic Dr between Clause Rd and downtown Modesto. As its name suggests, the trail is nestled along the banks of Modesto’s Dry Creek. The trail, offering tranquil views of the stream below, meanders six miles through a succession of neighborhood parks that provide a range of facilities and recreational activities. The trails western end is densely lined with Eucalyptus trees and the eastern end is characterized by native oaks and natural scenery. For the ornithologist within, our feathered friends can be seen along the creek or taking refuge in their arboreal homes above. In winter, the natural environment enfolding the trail plays host to various migrating

24

birds evading colder temperatures up north, perhaps on their way to the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge. Ground and tree squirrels may be seen feeding on the abundance of acorns peppering the land adjacent to the trail. At the trails middle point lies Dry Creek Regional Park. Visitors to this section of the trail may enjoy tennis courts, children play areas, picnic areas, and a free-of-charge (bring your own disk) eighteen-hole disk golf course. Disk golf (aka Frisbee golf) is a game in which individual players throw a flying disc into free-standing baskets. The object of the game is to navigate the course in the fewest possible number of throws. The Modesto Area Disc Golfers club is dedicated to the maintenance of the course year-round, ensuring its playability to locals and visitors, beginners and experts. Not interested, just lace-up your walking or running shoes, put on your roller blades, or hop on your bicycle and join fellow park visitors traversing the trail. At nightfall, the trail closes. Fortunate for you, home is a short trip away.

People ask me often where the name, “ModestoFamous” came from. The story is long and crazy and involves a woman in Fresno of all places, a newspaper that is named after an insect that buzzes and stings (I got stung) and a whole lot of input from my oldest daughter. Over the years, the name has just stuck and now more people in Modesto call me by ModestoFamous than by my actual name. I don’t mind. I don’t care if you call me “Fluffy” as long as you help me spread the love about our city. Think about the term, “ModestoFamous.” I see it scribbled at the top of a piece of paper with a list under it. That list will include some names that I am proud to be associated with. Do you realize how many celebrities are associated with Modesto? The list is pretty impressive. Think about Oscar-nominated global superstar, Jeremy Renner. Not too long ago, Renner was partying it up at Jax

on H. St.with the locals. The fact that Valdes, Rachel Renae and Melissa Renner still visits and cares about our Dalrymple on the Grammy stage one city is something that we should all take day. These are all talented musicians that we are lucky to have here. a lesson from. This is where

I got my start with a real show and the people who have seen me really are supportive of what I do. They come back and are always wanting more from me,” said K. I realize that I am leaving names out here and I apologize for that. There is so much talent here that it all gets hard to keep up with. For years, I have told folks to head downtown and take a look at the flyers posted up on poles and in shop windows for information about upcoming events. There is always something happening. When October comes around, do what you can to get a ticket to the Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMA). This will blow you away. Tuxedos, ball gowns and stretch limos are common place and Modesto comes out in force to celebrate local talent. You will gain a deeper appreciation for the place that you rest your head at night. You yourself will feel like a star.

per one tart. OK so who eats just one tart that pops when you crack open that bad boy. I know what you’re thinking, Efren, he eats pop tarts? I’m not a fan of that pop up treat that heats up in the toaster. But many people are and I thought it would be a perfect example to illustrate why you need to check your labels. So, now that we’ve indulged ourselves in soup for two, a protein shake that has more calories then protein and a tart that is sure to pop you out of your tiny jeans. It’s time to walk, jog or run at The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. On March 20th Modesto will shine with one of its healthiest days of the year with its 2ndAnnual Full and Half Marathon as well as a 5K Race. Last year The Quake Mobile DJ had the privilege in being part of such a wonderful event and I’m proud to say I will be back this year to help all the Marathon Runners with a shout out at the finish line for those final 100 yards till the final finisher crosses. Final! Not last but “final” finisher. I never did care for the word last because it implies someone is a loser for racing. Modesto, there is NO loser who takes on such a task such as this. Last year Mr. John Olsen took home the 1st place honor of The Surgical Modesto Full Marathon in a time of 2:43:44 and our 1st place female runner SamanthaShultz took home the same honor with a winning time of 3:19:10. But truly the fastest run that day came from me. That’s right, me the announcer. It’s like this. Last year my friends at The Shadow Chase Running Club gave me fullaccess to the scissor lift up above the crowd. It was grand being able to spot all the marathon runners as

they came in. They allsaid hello, they blew kisses, tossed up snacks as well as plenty of water. OH that water. Well, 11:30am came around and as I looked down at that porta potty 50 feet away, it was looking pretty attractive. Suddenly it was 12:30pm and I cound’t figured out how to get that darn scissor lift down. As time marched on, I looked down at my watch and it was 1:30pm! Talk about being animated up there on that scissor lift platform. WOW! You would have thought I was a Las Vegas cage dancer by now. Still, I had to roll on through to make sure all these finishers got those words of encouragement for those final 100 yards. The breaking point! At 2pm I called for backup on the microphone to The Shadow Chasers at the Event and I finally got the lift down. This was now the fastest run at The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. Even though it was only to the porta potties. Well, with that being said. I would like to remind everyone who participates in The 2011 Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon to check onthis announcer periodically as well as make sure your bib number is visible on your front side. Even though The Shadow Chase Running Club has bib chip timing, its helpful to this announcer to place the bib number with your face as well as your running attire for that shout out plug to the finish line. Oh! And onemore thing, while I’m up there, I’m way cool with a simple hello and even an occasional snack tossed up. But please, NO water. For more information on The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon as well as other Fun Runs visit our friends at The Shadow Chase Running Club at http://www.shadowchase.org/
