MODESTO IS #1 The world is watching Modesto, USA. May is such an exciting month here in Modesto. Everything seems to get into gear during May. The restaurants put out their outdoor patios, the crowds are bigger on the weekends, the Farmer’s Market is jumping two days a week and sprouting all over the county. Everything feels like it is in bloom, growing and exploding. Not only will the Amgen Tour of California be speeding into our downtown followed by a fleet of international press, but Suzy Powell is throwing her discuss into fame and our local hometown heroes like Jeremy Renner get more famous and the Oakdale Chocolate Festival
celebrates our locally made chocolate. World famous CEO Dan Costa shares some of his thoughts and is proof positive that Modesto can be home base for the leading companies in the world. May is the lead up month to our Graffiti Summer and the classic cars come out of the garages, get all shined up, the Elvis’s start singing, the 45s start spinning’ and everything seems to shine like a beautiful chrome hood ornament after our amazingly wet spring. It is so cool when Modesto gets that international flavor. Walking through the Amgen Tour lifestyle festival, you can go from language to language; all the while our
common dialog of the day is cycling. On May 17, Modesto USA will be the center of the cycling world as web sites, web cams, newspapers, cycling fans and TV reports will all be broadcasting out of downtown Modesto surrounded by our massive helping of Modestocana that graciously welcome our guests from around the world. Greetings Modesto Fans: April was insane, so much happening, so much to do. It was wet, wild and was one of our most exciting ModestoView issues yet. From the rodeo to the Celtic music, metal at the plaza and nice evenings to be out and about it was a fun month. We were so excited to feature the Modesto Garden Club and help showcase the wonderful things that they did. It was amazing to see the Modesto City Council meeting on Public Access 7 and ATT Channel 100 and see Penny Binney from the Garden Club showing the council the April ModestoView and they had all read it already. Thank you Penny and we were excited to showcase you. People got to know Chef Marvin and Chef Tobias and have been to Greens to taste their treats. ModestoView is so much more than a local arts and entertainment magazine. We reach across the county, to residents and business leaders alike. Civic pride is important and ModestoView is unashamedly 100% positive and focuses on the good that is around us. Our residents need to know that this is a place loaded with opportunity and interesting things to do. ModestoView is important as a relocation and economic development tool too. Business owners need to know that there are things to do for families as well as attracting young professionals just out of B-School. Business leaders need to talk about the good things to offset the challenges that we share with other cities around the nation to encourage investment and expansion. Arts, entertainment and good culture is an important economic tool. Modesto is different and we must celebrate our positive differences daily. Thanks to our amazing writers that share their exciting ideas with all of us and help make an interesting magazine. Thanks to all of you that plan and host events, create art tours, promote concerts, donate to our arts organizations, advertise your businesses, and give of your time and money to make Modesto a better and exciting place to live. Graffiti Summer is coming soon so get your plans ready. Wishing you a great May, Chris Murphy Founder, ModestoView P.S. Make sure you contact Greg and Kyle Cobb at advertising@modestoview.com to hook up and team up with us to make our city better. Thank you.

vinoview
Welcome to VinoView! By Brad Gibson
I’ve been interested in wine for about 20 years and I’ve learned about wine the easy way – by drinking it! The goal of VinoView is to increase your knowledge, and thus, your enjoyment of wine. Wine has a rich history dating back to 6000 BC and wine with meals has long been considered part of a life well lived. In many cultures, wine has traditionally helped mark special occasions, holidays and celebrations. Most weddings feature a bride and groom sharing a champagne toast. Along with being an enjoyable part of everyday life; wine has many other benefits. In a non-scientific sense, wine can smooth out the bumps that come with life’s daily stresses, and it contributes to the sense of well being that comes from a pleasant meal with friends or family. Scientifically, each week seems to bring new evidence that wine is also good for your health. Moderate drinkers (about 2 glasses for men and one for women) tend to live longer and healthier lives. “60 Minutes” first
brought this to the public consciousness in their 1992 segment titled, “The French Paradox”, which concluded that daily wine consumption was how the French population lived longer despite a diet much higher in fat than ours. More recent studies have shown that moderate wine consumption can benefit the heart, delay dementia, prevent arthritis, head off the common cold, keep the flu away, lower diabetes risk, and reduce throat cancer risk. As always you must ultimately be your own advocate.
You should consult your physician before embarking on any new lifestyle regimen but most evidence suggests that wine drinking, in moderation, goes hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle. We are very fortunate to live in the midst of wine leaders and California wine pioneers as well as being very close to so many high quality wine regions. In Modesto, and in all of California, wine is already a part of our everyday live’s and an integral part of our economy. In 2010, for the first time ever, the United States led the world in wine consumption. So Cheers, Salud, Prost, Salve, Salute; to your health.

One of the bartending badges of honor is to have long time famous bartender Harry Broumas give you the thumbs up and be a regular at your bar. Epic MAMA Music! By Chris Murphy
Modesto has been the source of some great music. The Modesto music scene has been the launch pad for many successful artists and continues to be place for new artist to develop, and thanks to all of the local restaurants and bars that are very friendly to live music, the quality keeps getting better and better. Here we look back at some of the great songs that have come out of the Modesto music scene. "Pretty" – Transport This is one of my favorite songs EVER. My band Third Party was able to cover this song at a Christmas gig at Deva years ago and Transport was there. It was so cool. This is a good driving beat, amazing chorus, cool effects swirling and deserves replay after replay. Matt Cox and Jason rivers still play locally and Nathan Penrose lives back east and stays in touch with Modesto on Facebook. "Got 2 Girlfriends" – UVR This was high energy music and was fun live. UVR writes catchy and fun songs and lit up the shows they played. They had the honor of closing the show for Avril Lavigne when she played at the State Theatre. Crazy show. Huge opening gig for Flying Blind at John Thurman and they have toured all over the USA and followed this song up with Hollywood and many others. We need more catchy music like this that sends you humming and whistling the tunes as you leave the gig. "Too Bad You" – Megan Slankard Megan Slankard goes electric! Megan broke through with this song, lots of national radio airplay and it was a flat out great song. She shows up at the Fat Cat after her “What not to wear” episode, and straps on an electric guitar and the rest is national tour history. As I write this, she is gigging in NYC. How cool huh? Her hits keep on coming and she is a regular on Pandora and XM stations. To listen to these, click on www.modestoview.com for the links. You will be blown away.

Dan Costa By CHRIS Murphy

Dan J. Costa was born in 1953 in Modesto, California. He started as a dishwasher and by high school graduation had worked his way through the ranks to become Chef at the Sundial. It was only a matter of time that Dan married Denise Vient in 1976 as they had known each other since kindergarten. Dan created, developed and sold Velvet Creamery Restaurants, Velvet Foods, Davis Lay Produce Company and the Mallards Foods Company. In 1986, Costa opened the milestone Mallard’s restaurant introducing new upscale dining to Modesto, paving the way for many of the wonderful restaurants we have now. In 1998, Dan developed the Costo/Lowe’s shopping center and soon purchased the Royal Robbins Outdoor clothing company. He later sold the improved company to Phoenix Footwear, splitting off the 5.11 Tactical brand. 5.11 Tactical is now a rapidly growing supplier of public safety apparel selling worldwide. Their customers include the FBI, CIA, and Secret Service and are known for their high quality, long-lasting, innovative clothing. 2011 Annual revenue is expected to exceed $200 Million. Deep down, Dan is still a food guy, and regularly shares his kitchen skills to help raise funds for non-profits and educate developing business people. He regularly advises local businesses and is currently teaching his ideas for success to a new generation of entrepreneurs with the Valley Apprentice Project. Dan’s philanthropic interests are too numerous to list, but his generous support is felt all over our city. Ok, now let’s take time to meet the Dan Costa that is behind all of these innovations and activities. Dan loves his hometown and is very comfortable running all of his business activities right here in Modesto. ModestoView catches up with Dan before a business trip to the east coast. Modesto is a great place to start a business because it is a basic all American city and a perfect test market. I have started every one of my 8 businesses in Modesto. Mellow Man Ace
Latin Hip Hop Legend
by FIESTA BOYZ
Born in Cuba, Mellow Man Ace has the occasional bilingual delivery and a heady gift for novelty rhymes. Born Ulpiano Sergio Reyez in 1967, he left Cuba with his family at the age of four and resettled in Los Angeles. With production from the Dust Brothers and Def Jef, Mellow Man Ace recorded his debut album Escape from Havana, releasing it in 1989 on Capitol. Almost one year later, the single "Mentirosa" became a Top 20 hit with Ace rapping over a crafty hook from Santana's "Evil Ways." Also a part of the Latin Alliance project (and the brother of Cypress Hill's Sen Dog), Mellow Man Ace recorded one additional album, The Brother with Two Tongues, then virtually retired from the field, but 2000 brought forth the release From Darkness Into Light. 2011 and Mellow Man Ace still brings the heat with his new music video. "MR. Excuses". FBZ: When did you first step into the hip-hop scene? MMA: I started my hands on days in hip hop culture in 1983 as a b-boy practicing and learning moves by watching New York City Breaker video footage. FBZ: Everyone knows your worldwide hit "Mentirosa", how did that song concept come about? MMA: The lyrical side of my song Mentirosa came from real life and from a girl I was dating at that time. FBZ: How did "Mentirosa" change your music career? MMA: The song Mentirosa opened many doors not just for me but for Latinos as a whole. For me it gave me an exit visa to travel the world many times. I’ve been fortunate to have met thousands of good and not so good characters who either live, or pretend to live this as a culture. The song also type-casted me much like a child actor
at times, but I have learned to take the good with the bad over the years. But over-all I give the song credit for giving me a great life on and off the field. FBZ: What are some of the new projects your working on and with for 2011? MMA: The project that takes up most of my time is the Zzyzzx project with my son Cazal. The project is signed to Delicious Vinyl Records and it’s become one of hip hop's first father/ son releases. Look for us to be on TV, internet radio and at a show near you in 2011. FBZ: In your opinion, has Hip-Hop music changed for the better or the worse? MMA: In my professional opinion hip hop has changed for the worst. Here's how- in this modern era hip hop,

A local band on a Warpath By mike vanek
Www.Facebook.Com/mike.Vanek
As trends come and go in this town there is one thing that has remained here in the city of Modesto, Good Heavy Metal Bands. One such band has risen through the ashes of 3 bands to form one of the best new bands Modesto has ever seen! The band I speak of is called Warpath Assassins. Born out of the fires lit by Thr3efold, Disillude, & Skin For Julia. Warpath Assassins lights a new fire in the 209 metal scene. This band has seen on a wave of success as of late, writing and recording their debut album and playing awesome local shows including the opportunity to play a sold out show with SF Punk Legends The Dead Kennedy’s. I recently had the opportunity to have a conversation with the band’s Bassist “Crusher” and this is how it went. MV: How was Warpath Assassins Created? CWPA: Jason and I talked about jamming at local shows and my current band at the time Skin for Julia, tried out James and passed on him. So I put 2 & 2 together since James also wanted to start something with me. So I called Jason and you have Warpath Assassins. MV: What inspires your band’s music? CWPA: Well I couldn’t say I’m sure
16
we all have our own opinions but myself I love music and being an entertainer. But the music, like the great Johnny Cash once said, it just comes out that way. Plus Jason is a great writer. MV: How does it make you feel when you stand back and look at the band’s success over the past few months? CWPA: I don’t feel like we have done anything yet but all I can say is “Thank You” to all the amazing fans that make our shows great and keep
Member of the Warpath Assassins. bringing on the warpath. MV: What was it like to open for The Dead Kennedy’s CWPA: the most amazing crazy crowd i have seen in a long time! The show was epic!!!... Thank you to Chris Ricci for the opportunity and once again the fans. MV: Where would you like to see Warpath Assassins in 5 Years? CWPA: Wherever the road takes us is my outlook. Everything, show, album tours: I’m ready for the hard work to get there. MV: What’s next for Warpath
Assassins? CWPA: Finishing the album for the 7/9 show with Motograter $12 at the Fat Cat and maybe a surprise warm-up show or two. MV: Is there anything you would like our readers to know about the band before we go? Enlighten the Fashion Senses By Shasta Boss
Spring’s blossoms have opened with a medley of color. Now it’s time for the summer to heat us up with more colors, fragrant flowers, outdoor activities, and extra special occasions. Summer is known for thrilling events like weddings, prom, and graduation so we deserve to create the most incredible fashionable memories. Imagine running through an endless field of enchantingly colorful wildflowers. The magnificent fragrances inspiring serenity, happiness, and greatness. Although there are wildflower fields close to us here in the valley, some of us enjoy a quick stop to the flower market to bring the enlightening scents and beautiful blooms back home with us. Keeping fresh flowers or plants around has been proven to enhance your mood, energy, and motivation. Country Shelf Floral in Orangeburg Square has been supplying the area with unique floral arrangements, the freshest cuts of flowers, reasonable prices, and more for over several years. Pat, the owner, and her floral designers display their unique talents by combining

stems, custom color matching, and adding a hint of unique flair into their flower creations to construct a one of a kind masterpiece. They were able to make a corsage that matched a prom dress exactly by transforming white orchids into a beautiful violet shade by mixing hues of rich pinks and purples with bright blues. Even the tiniest little hint of a rhinestone, orange or purple dragonfly, or small jewel design can be added to any arrangement to make it a one of a kind personalized creation. My absolute favorites here are the fresh flower designs that are combined with trendy jewelry pieces to make the most outstanding and elegant fashion statement that will definitely be remembered and envied by all. Country
Shelf offers their incredible unique services for all occasions and flower needs here in the Modesto area. With summer here more of us like to start redecorating or designing new household projects. Are you feeling crafty or have a special party coming up? For those of you that are inspired to design your own creations should definitely check out Simi Floral Supply on the corner of McHenry and Bangs Avenue. They supply a lot more than just artificial flowers and floral supplies; they carry a huge assortment of ribbons, party supplies for all occasions and holidays, wedding decorations and memorabilia, crafts, and much more. The staff is very friendly and willing to share brief tutorials on how to construct various projects like layered bows for hair clips or dresses, artificial flower crowns, bouquets, and more. The area in the back holds unique tree branches, baskets, and more to decorate with an all natural inspired style. Craft enthusiasts, interior designers, and soon to be brides can literally run wild through this warehouse and fill their carts full of craft and party goods. This supply store is a great place to find those unique items to add the finishing touches on a
renovated or new living space or just to add some new flavor back into your home or office. Looking for more specific type of plants for your garden? The Scenic Nursery, located on Scenic and Coffee, has a huge assortment of plants, roses, trees, ground covering, and vegetables along with all the fertilizer, soil, and supplies that you will need to plant the perfect landscape. Thanks to the many people inside the county, and out of area visitors who dropped in. One of my visitors was not showing in Oakdale, but had a flyer for a show I missed in last month’s column,
as the poster printed after deadline. Already in progress this month, will be the Spring Show at Mary Beth’s Grand Central Station restaurant in the old Sierra Railroad Station at 220 S Sierra Avenue. Theme for this show is Trains and Transportation and open to visual artists and photographers. With the jazz and other music events out there, this venue will likely have new shows in the future. This show runs through May 25. In May, the Central California Art Association Members Show runs through the month and member artists will display work for sale, each one renting one or more of the display grids featuring their work. Mark Holden
You have seen him at lots of your favorite places. Mark Holden has an amazing array of cool works of art and is constantly creating more. We caught up with Mark at Serrano’s Social Club talked about art and music while being serenaded by Ray Vizera on his Uke. Very nice. He is currently on display at Café Deva in a very cool father and daughter exhibit, Ella and Mark. Let’s get to know Mark Holden. I grew up here in Modesto, CA. My mother, who passed away in 2007, was a prominent artist in this area. Her name was Martha Holden/Bass (My dad died, and she got remarried). She and I would draw and paint together
with the Central California Art League when I was small. I went to John Muir Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High, and graduated from Thomas Downey High. I went to M.J.C., and transferred to Stanislaus State and graduated with B.F.A in 1997. Art, for me is genetic, I just can't stop making it. Modesto has a mixture of great fine art and crafts, but the one thing I would like to change is the attitude towards art that keeps the community mindset from growing. Real art should make people think, discuss, and then get inspired to create themselves, otherwise it's just decoration and craft. Right now, my daughter, Ella Mae Holden is my inspiration. She loves to paint with me, draw with me, and play with me. She's teaching me to loosen up and be more playful with my creations. What’s Growin’ on! By Wayne Zipser and Tom Orvis
The old adage goes “April showers bring May flowers.” For many crops in agriculture, late April showers - and definitely May showers - are NOT welcome. Cherries are producing very perishable fruit that will have blemishes from the rain called “split.” The fruit quality is fine but the consumer and export customers have been trained to expect the ‘perfect’ fruit – no blemishes or abnormalities. The only thing that is affected is the look and the price. Apricots from the Westside are also very susceptible to moisture until some varieties start harvest in June. And frost – growers will worry about frost for all fruits and nuts up until the threat is gone. One hard frost (low 20’s) in the embryonic or forming stage and a crop can be lost. For annuals – the entire year could be gone. The bills still find the mailbox! Does anyone else love the smell of fresh-cut alfalfa? We sure do. Oats, alfalfa and other forage grains are being baled and ensiled for animal feed. An untimely rain when the forage is cut and curing can create mold and mildew problems. This lowers quality and value – much less adding time. What is ensiled you ask? To be ensiled, a feed grain is cut green and packed into either a bag or pit. When we talk packed – we mean packed by large eight-wheeled tractors or pressure packed in plastic and vinyl bags. We commonly call this “silage.” This is the part of the process where the microbes take over and start breaking down the starches into energy that is easily digestible for ruminant animals. What is a ruminant? A ruminant is an animal with four stomachs! Those four stomachs are the Rumen, Reticulum, Omasum and Abomasum. These stomachs act as a series of grinders. Cows, sheep, goats and deer are the most famous ruminants. The largest stomach is the Rumen. The Rumen starts as the smallest stomach and grows as the animal changes its diet from a mother’s milk to forages and grasses. It is the start of the fermentation process. It is a very gassy place and trust us – you will know it if you ever get rumen juice on you! You may even wish you had been sprayed by a skunk! The Reticulum is called the “Hardware Stomach” because it traps anything that should not get passed into the rest of the stomachs. In general
terms, the Omasum removes excess water from food and further reduces the size of food particles before passing them to the Abomasum for digestion by enzymes. The Abomasum is most like other Monogastrates – single stomach animals. When you see cows chewing their cud (the regurgitated forage from the rumen), you see a function of their digestive system in action. They’re not just out chewing the fat with the other cows … Speaking of silage … This process will get repeated all over again this fall with all of the corn growing in the fields. As many of the forage crops are harvested in the spring, the ground is ripped, disked and replanted with corn. You won’t see this in an alfalfa field because an average alfalfa field produces for 5-6 years before it is torn out and put into a rotational crop. No – this corn is not for ethanol – it is corn for cows! Many silage corn varieties in California have a growing season of 95-118 days in length. The question is which one to grow? One grower may choose a variety that is high in nutritional or digestibility value. Another grower may choose a tall corn that produces lots of tons of feed because they need dry matter in their rations. Some may choose a variety that has a little bit of both. Speaking of rations – did you know that most cows have a trained nutritionist making up their daily diets? Some of these highly trained professionals even have a PhD! How many people have PhD’s deciding what we eat every day? Not us! May is also a time to frequent the many local Farmer’s Markets. You are the customer – ask questions of the growers. Get in touch with your local food supply and get to know the people that produce you food. Make an effort to put a face with your food and you will look at each meal in a completely different way. And in the immortal words of my Mother – Fresh is always best! This spring the rivers will continue to run high to release snow melt from the dams. This is also a good time to be thinking about water safety. Stay away from the canals! They are not places to play! While they may look smooth and placid on top, a swift and deadly current is just beneath the surface. Combine swift current and cold snow water and you have a disaster waiting to happen!
So when you want to cool down on a hot day – go turn on your sprinkler or take a cold shower. DO NOT GO SWIMMING IN A CANAL! It is also against the law! Some other dangers we are seeing this year are rattlesnakes in the foothills. Early reports are of many more this year compared to the last few years. Rattlesnakes are not fun to play with – especially the little ones! The little ones are the most dangerous because they release ALL of their venom and they do not have the rattle warning system. If you are bitten, get medical attention as soon as possible! It will not be a pretty ordeal, but most people survive. If you hear the rattle – stay away! They don’t want to bite you any more than you want to get bitten! Rattle Facts: How many times a year do snakes shed their skins? (1 to 4) How many rattles do rattlesnakes add per year? (rattles are made of keratin like fingernails – depends on
sheddings) Does the number of rattles necessarily reflect the age of the snake? (No – depends on sheddings and broken and worn off rattles.) The largest rattle string we have seen is 18 from a VERY large snake – and it got away! We weren’t going to follow him into HIS squirrel hole! So in the month of May, be safe! Enjoy the many Farmer’s Markets! Be safe and smart on Cinco de Mayo! Go to the local festivals like the Oakdale Chocolate Festival, the Calaveras Jumping Frog Jubilee, the Los Banos Mayday Fair and the Lodi ZinFest – to name a few! AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA stage 3 finishes in downtown modesto tuesday may 17, 2011 By chris murphy
For the 4th Straight year, Modesto will be the center of the cycling universe! One May 17th the Amgen Tour of California will finish in downtown Modesto in what is now one of the biggest cycling events in the world. Teams from around the world will be competing in 8 beautiful stages from Lake Tahoe, through central California, down the coast and then finishing in Thousand Oaks. Climbs, sprints, breakaways and excitement follow the race, city to city. Stage 3 will finish between 2 and 3 pm at the corner of I and 12th Street. The race will blaze through Oakdale, then burn down Claus and Scenic into downtown. Once in downtown, the race will loop twice through the college district, racing down the classic Graffiti
cruise route of 11th St, past MJC, around Graceada Park and back to I Street. Stage 3 will be a sprinters dream and will certainly prove to be an exciting high-speed sprint finish. The best places to view will be, all along Scenic between Claus and downtown, along Needham when the pack comes off of Sycamore and anywhere along the loop in downtown. There will be a huge lifestyle festival on 10th, 11th 12th and I streets. Visitors from around the world will be visiting out town and eating in our local restaurants. TV broadcasts will be beamed from I street in dozens of languages. ModestoView is presenting live music from 11 to 3 on the Budweiser Stage in the lifestyle festival featuring
the American Graffiti 50s themed Rob Ely, the rocking Matty Comer and the Experience, the Americana sound of Hickory and Soul Heart. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the classic cars and the strolling Elvi and classic characters that make up our exciting Graffiti Scene. KFIV1360 will be live near the finish line with Dave Diamond to report the race progress to the community and video will be available on a huge jumbotron that will show the TV feed going out to the world. This will truly be a very exciting day. As a finish city, the racing teams will be staying in Modesto so the team mechanics prepping the $10,000 racing bikes for the next day will be on display
in the parking lot of the Center Plaza. Rider sightings should be good too as they relax after a long day on the bike and get ready for stage 4. The city of Modesto still needs volunteers to help control the crowds, protect the racecourse, and assist in the festival area. You can sign up by clicking the link on ModestoView.com Huge props to the leadership of the City of Modesto for pushing hard to help attract and keep this amazing worldclass sporting event in Modesto. The volunteer turn out is the best in the Tour of California and we should all be so proud and thankful to our sponsors and volunteers for making this a big part of Modesto.

Bicycle! Bicycle!
I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike
By Efren Martinez
And, why not! With Amgen Tour of California heading for Modesto this month, the wheels are already turning with most of us. I have recently awakened my Super 6 road bike from a long winter slumber, with the excitement of the Amgen tour racing into our city as well as looking forward to riding on those warm days this summer with the pack. Amgen is exciting, good for the local economy, as well as great free family entertainment. It’s especially grand because it gets some of us moving and inspires fitness. This Modesto citizen is grateful that Amgen is coming to Modesto. Last year, the Amgen festival featured an amateur bike race. This year there will be one similar on May 14th at The Family Festival. “The Criterium If you are up to making the Class A circuit at this race, you might want to start getting ready for it now. This race
is for our local class A Cyclist, but make no mistake, these Class A Cyclists are fast and very serious about winning. So, if you’re thinking about dusting off your old Schwinn Varsity road bike you bought from Montgomery Wards back in the day, you might want to give it some serious thought before you sign up for this race. Lacking the experience in racing or even riding in a pace line could result in serious injury to you and others around you in the race. A good place to start to get familiar with ridding in packs would be with the Class B riders that meet every Sunday at Raley’s shopping center in Village One at 2:00 pm. It’s a causal 30-mile ride on country roads to Oakdale and back. For a much faster pace ride, there is a Class A riders group that leaves from Fun Sport Bikes on McHenry at 5:30pm every Sunday. This group is
screaming fast! I have ridden with this group and if you can’t keep up, they will leave you behind. This ride is a 30-mile bike ride to Oakdale and back. Theses riders average a lighting speed of about 22+MPH. When I first started riding with this group, I always wondered why they rode so fast as there’s no prize for the winner. Then it came to me why they go so fast, and yes, it’s all about a race on who can get there first. When we all take off, we start out in a warm-up pace line for a few miles till we get in the country then it’s all on. The blood gets moving rapidly through our bodies, muscles are fired up and the sweat is oozing out of our pores. Keeping hydrated is a good thing right about now. This is why from there on it’s a race. A race of who can get to the restroom first in Oakdale. I figured it out after a few rides with this group and started to leave a couple minutes prior to the pack for many reasons. It served well for my training last year in The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon and I was also guaranteed to be the first to the restrooms at our destination. All kidding aside, the thought was that instead of keeping up with them; stay out in front so they don’t pass you. This gave me the mentality of racing
Efren Martinez compeating in The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. with the cyclist always being in my shadows and coming up fast. It also served for safety purposes. If I break down out there, I can always expect the other cyclists on my back to aid me versus being left behind. Safety is essential in all sports, especially when riding a bike. Always wear a properly fitted helmet and when riding with

Happy May! BY Ruben Porras
Modesto is on fire in regard to culture and diversity lately and that cool vibe will continue on as we head into the next few months. It is awesome to see the sun for a change and that will make bike rides and long walks much more accessible. Check out our event calendar for a complete list of May events. It is very nice to see that there is something featured for everyone. On May 5th, spend the day at the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market and take the time to have dinner at one of our amazing local Mexican restaurants. My favorite is Taqueria los Compadres in the Roseburg Square. Authentic is the focus there. My abuelita’s kitchen comes to life again whenever I walk in the doors. If you have never visited a taco truck

(a crime in my book), find one and get lost in Mexico a bit. Eighth Street has a number of trucks and a unique atmosphere as does Crows Landing Road. Take the good with the bad at these places. Ignore a bit of dust, crack open a Jarrito and enjoy the flavor. Ask a friend for advice on a truck to choose. Almost everyone seems to have a favorite. Carry on with the Latin theme of the month and watch comedian, Paul Rodriguez bring the crowd at The Gallo Center to tears of laughter on May 6th. I hope to catch this show. Rodriguez has some classic bits. Wake up early on May 7th and head to Crows Landing Road for the annual Cinco de Mayo parade. This is always a great chance to hear some fantastic music, see some beautiful low riders

quake continued from page 24 others in a group, only ride with the class of riders you can keep up with. For a water retention tip, try carrying along some soy nuts with you. They are very high in protein and the salt that they are covered with would have similar effects on water retention in the body as if you where to take sodium chloride tablets prior and during a ride. Note! This is not recommend for those who have high blood pressures and always consult your doctor to see if you’re healthy enough for any kind of exercise before starting. Cycling is a great sport and hopefully the Amgen Tour will get you cycling all year long. urban continued from page 15 the underground scene is still amazing and has many different flavors. I listen to groups like Odd Future, Flying Lotus, Dam Funk, Mayor Hawthorne, as well as some new works from seasoned vets that still make new material such as Masta Ace, Dres of Black Sheep, Mike G of the Jungle Brothers and many others. Now when it comes to Pop radio artists, I don't listen to it because of how mindless and childish it has become in an over-all direction. It’s cool for my kids under 10, but not so much for my 15 year old who is well schooled in the arts or me for that matter. I’m in my 40's and yearn to grow from what I listen to. FBZ: Any advice for new artists? MMA: My advice for new artists is simple: Make sure you absolutely love music if you plan on making a living from it. It cannot just be a hobby, and if it is, then please leave it to the pros and find something else to do for work. We must remember that the word "artist" has been turned into a bad joke and very lightly used these days. Adding on, I say respect your craft by adding a price of integrity to it as it makes no sense to spend your hard earned money on equipment, computers and software, microphones or studio time only to then give your craft away for free. You will never eat from hip hop or any music of any kind if you do not learn this basic law of the arts. Lastly I would say to have a strong heart as we don’t have

medical, dental of life insurance plans, in these record contracts, so you better do it from the heart because when the curtain comes down there will be nobody there to help you in your final days. FBZ: Any shows coming up in our area? MMA: My next show in the Modesto area will be May 7th, and I’m looking forward to hittin’ the road again. I hope to see all of Modesto come out and represent the Godfather of Latino based hip hop, and show support by coming out. FBZ: Where can Music Lovers, DJ's and Artists go to get more Mellow Man Ace? MMA: The best place to get new Mellow Man Ace projects right now is my personal artist website at www.mellowmanace.bandcamp.com. It’s like having my own personal Mellow Man Ace record store where I receive all the proceeds, not some greedy record executive. You can also find all of my new music videos at Youtube/officialmellowmanace. In order to chat with me daily find me on Facebook/ulpianoreyes, or on Twitter/mellowmanacezzyzzx.
