Becky and Chris enjoy Jamie with a little Cal / Stanford rivalry It is so great that Harrison is speaking to the local service clubs about Modesto’s history and architecture as he serves on the Modesto Landmark Commission. We need to preserve our past to have a great future. Great job Harrison! Proud of you. Chris, Madison, Abbey and Harrison at Modesto Sunrise Rotary This is going to be a fabulous July here in Modesto. We have just come off of a great Graffiti Summers last month. There were cars and people visiting Modesto from all over the world, enjoying our community, checking out our cars and feeing right at home. I love sitting on my deck playing my guitar and hearing the sounds of hot rods all over town It is a very cool Modesto soundtrack. I got to cruise this year for the first time. Last year I was lucky enough to be the Grand Marshal, but this year, I got to cruise in a big ole long Catalina with Jeremiah Williams and Harrison Power. The Graffiti USA Museum was hosting visitors and Graffiti Con 2022. It was so fun. Now, we need to support the efforts of our local Lowrider and customs community to make cruising legal again! This community is so very important to our Graffiti USA future and making sure that we include all of our communities and cultures in our classic story. We will keep you posted on the next steps. We are a richer community when we all work together for good, and lift each other up. It is a tough time right now nationally, when people are working hard to take

rights away from people, 50.52% of our people actually. 75% of my family unit are women and it really makes you wonder. This is really simple. Equality for all. That’s it really. I respect the beliefs of others, and at the very least expect the same back. We need to be a people with empathy, integrity, understanding and respect. That’s what true independence is as we celebrate the 4th of July. I look forward to announcing this year’s 149th Annual Fourth of July Parade. It is such an honor to celebrate our community, our people and showcase those have made a difference and want to have a lot of fun on floats, cars, boats and even some airplanes, oh yeah some marching bands and some good ole rock and roll from the Clampers. I, along with my friend Ian Riley of KHOP, and “Radio” Rick Myers of KFIV fame will be there talking it all up as they go by. Come out and celebrate with us and thanks to the Modesto Kiwanis Clubs for keeping the parade alive and thriving and for celebrating our friend, Terry McGrath. Later this month, the Stanislaus County Fair is back and bigger than ever. Bigger Monster trucks, more music, more food, more midway rides and more animals and

more great times. This is one of the true great family events. Opening night is July 8 and come out and see my band Third Party rock the community stage as you head to get a funnel cake. You can read more about the fair in our center spread. This summer, let’s make sure that we all say “Thank You” to our local businesses. As we see some long time local companies sell to big investment firms, we have to make sure that we are working hard to support our local businesses that keep all of their revenue right here at home, sponsor our soccer teams, donate to our local fundraisers and keep Modesto thriving. This is really important and we need to keep every dollar as local as possible. We need to work hard to help people start new businesses or bring their businesses and be successful here in Modesto. Thank you to the local businesses that support ModestoView so we can bring you nothing but good news each month and every day on-line. I am grateful to live in a place like this where we all work hard to lift each other up and make things better. Have a wonderful 4th and a great July. With gratitude, Chris Murphy Founder & Publisher, ModestoView

From Front Cover to College!

One of our favorite covers of all time featured two of my favorite kids in Modesto – Sofia Johnson and Thomas Damrell! Thomas and Sofia graced the front cover of July’s issue in 2013 when they were only 9 and 10 years old sharing a massive sundae and celebrating the classic Modestocana of summer in downtown. Sofia went to Downey High School and graduated in 2021 (long-time author of the All Ages View!) and Thomas went to Modesto High and just graduated just this year. Sofia attends Cal Poly studying Environmental Science and Thomas is off to Arizona State University intending to study journalism. We get to catch up with them over the summer at MoBand each year and love seeing where our not-so-young ModestoView stars are headed! Thank you for being gracious models almost 10 years ago and we can’t wait to see where you go next! You both are amazing!

Fabulous 4th Celebration

By Chris Murphy

Dance Party Every Weekend

Open Thursday – Saturday

For nearly 150 years, Modesto has had a 4th of July Parade and that continues in 2022. Modesto has one of the longest running 4th of July Parades in the western USA. Even during the pandemic, there was a scaled down parade through 10th St Plaza with a proclamation from Mayor Brandvold. This year, the parade is back and bigger than ever, on the 4th. This year, the Modesto Kiwanis Clubs will be celebrating the life of Terry McGrath and all he did to boost the 4th of July Parade for many years. Terry is a long time Modestan, active in so many things over the years. He was a Road Rebel back in the late 50s when he was Draggin’ 10th, he was notorious for the high volume of tickets, and knocked over the cones when 10th St was made One-way. Terry was a great family man and over the years, with his McGrath Moving and Storage company, he was able to serve Modesto with the Modesto Jaycees, he was a clamper, and was on the Modesto Centennial committee back in 1970. Terry managed the campaign for John Thurman and ran for Board of Supervisors. Terry was a dedicated member of Modesto Kiwanis and was instrumental in taking over the Modesto 4th of July Parade following the end of the Jaycees. Terry was inducted into the Graffiti USA Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame and is remembered today for all he has done for our community. Terry is survived by his kids, Stephanie, Michael, Katie & Susan and his wife Pat Glattke and first wife Eva McGrath. This 2022 Modesto 4th of July Parade is dedicated to Terry McGrath. Click on the QR code below to watch a video of Terry talking about Cruising.

As America celebrates our independence from Great Britain, we need to take time to remember that it was the support of France, both diplomatically and financially that allowed us to win our independence. The French Monarchy recognized the independence of the United States and George Washington had a good relationship with Marquis de Lafayette and we have been allies since. The French celebrate Bastille Day, Le Fete Nationale, as the beginning of the French Revolution. It will be celebrated July 14, 2022. It is an amazing day in Paris and I have been fortunate to have experienced this day of revolution a few times. Vive le France. FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

, is it getting hot, friends! We didn’t get much of a spring this year-Mother Nature went straight to summer. Which means a lot of water play, water sports, swimming, ice cream and SLUSHIES! Otterpops and frozen Gogurts are wonderful for the kiddos…but the adults? We’re talking beer slushies! We have divided our efforts and conquered many slushies to find some of the best yummy frozen alcoholic treats in the area! Try them all and let us know your favorite. Post your photos and tag them #modestoview for a chance to be featured in RearView! To find out the hours of operation of each establishment, find each of these awesome places on Facebook and make sure to visit them in person this month. Sip on, friends!

The Terrace

521 1/2 McHenry Avenue, Modesto

The little gem is hidden inconspicuously behind a salon on McHenry Avenue. There are a few tables inside but what makes this place so special is the outside atmosphere. Twinkle lights, comfy couches with pillows, wrought iron tables with soft cushions and flowers galore. You won’t find a more beautiful patio in Modesto. Their menu and specials change often, but as of our writing they are serving up this delicious Sangria Mango Strawberry Slushie! Pair it with the pesto bruschetta. Refreshing!

find your favorite plate. Try the Strawberry Margoserita Slush-ee with a scratch-made Strawberry Cheesecake. Divine!

Dying Breed

963 Shepard Court, Suite B, Oakdale

Famous for their massive shaded brewery and huge air conditioners with their stage for live music, you need to make this a stop this month. They are always choosing their best beers to turn into slushies. They’ve slushied their Blackberry 50/50 (sooo good), and have some crazy concoctions you’ll love like the Hefeweizen Pina Colada, Frozen Blue Raspberry Punch or Grape Sour. Featuring food trucks, live music and some super fun themed parties, we think you’ll become big fans of Dying Breed.

FiveEye Brewing

1920 Foundry Ct Unit B1, Ceres

Food Fix Butcher and Baker 938 11th Street, Modesto

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Modesto, this restaurant boasts some seriously delicious food and bevs. Guy Fieri famously visited the associated Food Fix Food Truck and gave his stamp of approval. It’s known for creative sandwiches made from ingredients you don’t always think to pair together, and a brunch menu so delicious you might have to eat here several times to

1870 Brewery

911 J Street Modesto

1870 is located at the corner of J and 9th with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They feature a variety of food trucks for your enjoyment. They often have several different slushies on tap like the Sake Margarita, Blueberry Marshmallow, or Mango. Come back often to have them all. Scrumptious!

This brewery boasts a large seating area with cornhole, jenga, and live music. You can really spread out and settle in here. They also have different food trucks and vendors. You can find seltzer slushies here as well as beer slushies giving you a greater variety of flavors. You should come to a yoga class and stay for the slushies! Slushie selections change weekly, but come in flavors like Raspberry Cheesecake, Pina Colada, and Lemon Lime. Come see what’s being served today!

MAMA VIEW

Necessity is the Mother of Invention .By Middagh Goodwin

As Frank Zappa once said, “Necessity is the Mothers of Invention”. This is a mantra that I have at least internally shouted time and time again over the years. We are not completely out of the woods as far as Covid is concerned but we can at least see a path that leads to hopefully a brighter future. Events like Modesto Area Music Awards, Music in the Plaza, May the 4th, and Graffiti Con and Porchfest have returned and had good attendance; Edible Extravaganza is scheduled for September 16th. All of these and more were postponed and or cancelled but are coming back slowly but surely. Music has returned to just about all the restaurants and bars that hosted live bands and DJs pre-pandemic and a few new spots have opened over or started hosting music over the last few years including Rancho Fresco Cantina and Retro in downtown Modesto and Contentment Brewing near MJC. I am still holding out for a dedicated midsize music house to open back up in

Modesto, ideally for all ages. Along with the local music schools like VMI and GKMusic, this is what we need to breathe life back into the Modesto music scene. A place dedicated to developing new talent alongside some of our area’s great original bands and solo artists and hosting touring acts. We don’t need a Cadillac we just need a Jeep, four walls a stage and a Soundsystem. Build it and I assure you they will come. As some of you may know I host MAMARadio on KCBP 95.5 FM Modesto Community Radio and if you want to hear your music played on the air email mamarecords209@gmail.com. Please make sure that these are clean or edited for radio. MAMA Radio airs every Monday at 5 pm, Friday at 9 pm and Saturday at 6 pm and you never know you might end up in regular rotation on the station. Here at ModestoView, we are dedicated to promoting all the great events that happen in Modesto and surrounding areas so if you have an event in the 209 please email information including time, date and location to mamarecords209@gmail.com so we can get them in our calendar(online and in print.) July’s Music in the Plaza which happens every Friday 7-9 pm will feature a Rockit Gear Showcase on July 1st, Wet Banditos on the 8th, Creole Jazz Kings on the 15th. David Dow & Friends on the 22nd and Overdryve on the 29th. Come on out and grab a good spot on either Fuzio or Ralston’s Goat’s patio or bring your lawn chairs to sit in front of the stage.

Picking up where I left off last month. My train travels across America are filled with music and unique food and outdoor beauty, and sometimes involve accompanying songwriters on tour, as will be the case again soon. Let’s check out another cluster of cool destinations worth a visit. Sandpoint, ID, about an hour from the Canadian border, offers lakefront hiking and an artsy downtown area. Cedar Street Bridge Public Market which spans the creek is wonderful to wander. Panhandle Cone & Coffee serves up ice cream insanity with flavors like bourbon & honeycomb and buttermilk-huckleberry. Recommended local music: Americana songwriter Patrice Webb, who appeared in the closing lineup of an early year of my acoustic fest. Patrice has won or placed in numerous song contests over the past decade, in genre categories ranging from country to spiritual to jazz & blues. Santa Fe, NM is notable for its landscapes and architecture and art. The Canyon Road walking tour crams 100+ galleries, shops and restaurants into a one-half mile. Plus, there’s an installation of Meow Wolf to be found in town - the sprawling, surreal interactive art experience. Recommended local music: D Henry Fenton, who recently migrated there by way of Australia and L.A. Henry’s a cool cat making bluesy folk music with a vintage rock & roll vibe and is

by Aaron Rowan always wonderful to work with. Boston, MA & Providence, RI. I’ll combine these since they are only an hour’s journey apart. Boston is among the best new cities I visited in 2021. Follow the red, white and blue brick road: the Freedom Trail winding past numerous historic sites over a couple of miles between Boston Common and the good ship U.S.S. Constitution. Do some more naval gazing at the Tea Party ships docked in the harbor. Bell In Hand Tavern has been around for over 225 years and was frequented by old-time patriots like Paul Revere & Samuel Adams. They serve the best fried chicken sandwich I ever had. Moving down the coast, Providence is a charming city along the river. I was there mainly to catch up with Alida McKeon. You’ll recognize the name.....or you should. Alida was a grand prize winner at the Valley Talent Project, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and one of the greatest young artists our area has produced. Make the time to catch Alida jamming on her ukulele or with a jazz band around Providence or up in Boston. A local musical highlight of July is Opera Modesto’s annual SOI (Summer Opera Institute) where young vocalists are mentored in a variety of topics, culminating in a public concert slated for Friday or Saturday 7/29 or 7/30. My tour-managing duties force me to miss the fun this time around, but you can find more details at www.operamodesto.org. It’s always a lovely concert, and if you’re able to attend, say hi to talented local musical theatre star Cossette Asenjo for me - she’s the deeply deserving Modesto Unplugged sponsoree to attend this year’s program. Stay cool and stay cultured this summer! Intimate performances. Infinite playlist. MODESTO UNPLUGGED. www. modestounplugged.com.

From Saigon to downtown Modesto, Bubble Tea has never tasted so good. Bubble tea is very important to Thanh “Joe” Dong. This was one of his favorite things growing up, and when he was trying hard to woo his eventual wife, Lucia Tran, he would travel to the Bay Area to get the exact bubble tea she liked.

12

Joe moved to the USA when he was 10 with his grandparents. He lived and worked in the Bay Area in the tech industry. When he moved to Modesto, he was doing the commute thing and it was wearing him out. Working with his church youth group, he met his future wife and 12 years ago they were married. After his 2nd child was born, he knew that the commute wasn’t going to work and he and Lucia decided that they could start a café that served the traditional food of his country, and also the amazing tastes he enjoys so much in the USA. First things first. T Cups is so much more than a “tea shop”. Their signature “Bubble” teas are just the start, and there are so many to choose from. But what you really need to know, is that you can get fair food, yes friends, the food you love at the Stanislaus County Fair

all year long. We’re talking funnel cakes, crepes, and the unreal T-Pop chicken bites. They have fresh fruit cut daily for their crepes, cakes and drinks and no funnel cake or crepe is complete with out a good dose of whipped cream. You can get sweet or savory crepes with just about any sweet flavor, you have to have Nutella in there somehow, or some ham, cheese and pineapple. Are you hungry yet? Their crepes and cakes are all fresh made, the vegetables are fresh cut and there is something for everyone. I am a regular for their crepes both sweet and savory and I have come to learn to love the Bubble tea flavors. One of my favorite crepes is the banana, strawberry and kiwi crepe topped with whipped cream and green tea ice cream. Amazing. Something you have heard about and may not have tried is a Bahn Mi sandwich. I

have one word for the T-Cups Bahn Mi, “WOW”! This sandwich us the perfect blend of savory, with a blend of pickled carrots, daikon radish, cilantro and Vietnamese cold cuts all served on a baguette roll. Once you have one of these, this will be a regular lunch or dinner staple at your house. There are a couple of other amazing things like the T Pop chicken that will keep you coming back, and there are a variety of fish balls and even traditional coconut pancakes. If Bobo or Pearl tea is not your thing, they have a full espresso bar for cold and hot drinks and you can choose from a variety of hand made Italian sodas. For lunch and dinner you can even get beer and wine with your sandwiches and sides. T-cups is a great place to hang out. They have games and nice seating area as well as an outdoor patio right there in 10th

JULY 2022

INTERVIEW

ing the pandemic I spent a lot of time at home managing the kids on zoom for school. It was tough. For them and for me. I can’t to get the fair back, open the gates and see everyone come back out with their kids to enjoy the traditions that fair was built on.

Matt Cranford By Chris Murphy

Big events, national tours and so many other large scale events have been on hold for nearly two years. When you look back, the pandemic took out the riggers, lighting and sounds people, the stage hands, the concessions vendors, let alone the star talent that attracts people to events. Right here, we saw it with the Gallo Center, FruitYard and even the Stanislaus County Fair. Along with the Fair, it took out the 4H and the educational pavilions, the truck pulls, the midway and the concerts on the Free Stage. So here we are friends, July is rolling in, the 4th of July Parade will be on the 4th, and on July 8th, the Stanislaus County Fair will open again. Over the last 6 years, Matt Cranford has been in the driver seat. Matt has long experience with event and facilities management and we worked together at the State Theatre many years ago. So in 2022, it’s a new season and let’s catch up with Matt. ModestoView: How hard has it been to get the wheels spinning up to full speed again? Matt Cranford: It has been tougher than I imagined it would be. Everyone knows the supply chain and labor issues we are all experiencing. But what I did not plan for was the inability to quickly recall the process and system for what we do. We have scheduled meetings to talk through past fairs and the processes we used. We then tried to apply those processes to our current situation, and they did not work! So, in a lot of ways, we have literally recreated the process for planning the county fair. For some situations, it was a blessing because it allowed us to make the changes we have talked about for the last 5-6 years. But in other situations, it has compounded the difficulty of creating a new event with all new staff and a new process. Mix in the reality that not all of our suppliers and partners are still around, and you have a lot of extra work that needs to be completed this year. It has really made us look back and recognize how much we took for granted year after year! MV: How will the 2022 season be different from what people remember back in the day? MC: Luckily, at this time we are going to have a very traditional fair. We will be featuring all of the same, great elements that have made this fair such a great place. The food, drinks, music, arena events and kids activities will all be here. I think the biggest difference, and most immediate to recognize will be our staffing levels. We are having our

14

struggles, so lines to buy tickets or through the entrance gates into the fair may be longer than expected. Food and drink lines may also be slower than we all want. But I know all of our vendors are committed to putting out a good product. We are continually working to identify additional staff and do our best to make sure we provide a fun, and memorable fair this year! MV: How did the community support you during the pandemic? MC: The community was great! There were a few events we could hold during the shutdown. With some additional COVID guidelines, we were able to have some very safe events. A good amount of our Fair sponsors had also pre-paid their sponsorship for the 2020 fair prior to us cancelling the event. And these same sponsors were gracious enough to allow us to keep that money and use it during the shutdown for our hard expenses. Their generosity really allowed us to get through the closure and ensure we would be here today. Our community continually comes out in support of the fair each year. And during the pandemic it was no different! MV: You had a scaled back season last year, how did that go? MC: Our “Summer of Fun” as we called it last year was a great little event. We only featured a few food stands, different pop-up vendors, limited livestock and our arena

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

events. It was also stretched out over 3 weekends. We were not given the green light for outdoor events by the Governor until early June, so it was tough to plan more than what we featured. Our livestock program, however, was supported by a host of volunteers. These volunteers took time off of work and spent almost 3 weeks at the fair to ensure the 4H and FFA kids would have the ability to do their shows and participate in the auction. 2021 was really a labor of love. We really wanted to do something, anything, for the community and our modified fair covered that I believe. I would rather not do 3 weeks straight like that again, but if that is what it takes, we will make it happen. MV: Did the pandemic give you time to recalibrate what the Stanislaus County Fair could be? MC: It really gave us time to evaluate what the Fair was, is and can be. We also realized how much a traditional fair means to the community. By nature, I am always looking to evolve and change the fair. But the pandemic really showed how much we all need some tradition in our lives. In a lot of ways for me, it reinforced the need to keep our traditions alive and ongoing. MV: What are you most excited about for the 2022 season? MC: I am most excited to see the kids come out. My favorite part of the fair day is to be on the grounds in the late evening and see the 4, 5 and 6 yr olds all out having a good time. They may be a little over-stimulated by 10pm, but I love seeing them out, enjoying the fair and not having a care in the world except to get that last ice cream cone! Dur-

MV: My band Third Party is playing on the local music stage on opening night, what kind of local support have you received from the music community? MC: It feels like all of the bands want to come out. Our stage schedule is limited for time, so we cannot accommodate everyone. But we did a great job of getting our local bands out and on stage. There was a band that decided to hang it up during the pandemic, but once we approached them to come out, they made it happen. They just wanted to get out and play at the fair. It really is a great way for kids and family to see their parents or loved ones performing that is not always doable. Especially for the bands that play in clubs and bars. We also get to feature VMI (Valley Music Institute) for an entire day during the fair. If you don ‘t know what VMI does, they support and teach kids about music while playing in bands. Like School of Rock. And I love the fact that we will end up with 20+ youth bands out here performing and showing off their skills. MV: What is your favorite fair food? MC: My guilty pleasure during the fair is funnel cake. I tend to only have 1, but they are so good! You can’t beat the milkshakes from the 4H either, especially on a hot afternoon. But in the evening, and the day winds down, funnel cake is the perfect thing to eat. MV: If you had an unlimited budget, what would you do with the Stan Co Fair? MC: Air Conditioning! And more air conditioning! That is probably our single biggest issue. We would need to update the electrical infrastructure since it goes back to the early 1960’s. But if we had a few blank checks, getting that updated would dramatically change what the fairgrounds can do for the community on a year-around basis! MV: What is something that people may not know about the Stanislaus County Fair? MC: The fairgrounds has a pretty amazing story since it was used by the army as a rehabilitation facility for soldiers that went AWOL during WW2. It was also used as an internment camp for a little while, but I think one of the lesser known historical facts of the fair is that the county fair started in Modesto in 1891 and ended in 1902. Then, in 1911, the Melon Carnival took place and eventually that became recognized and known as the Stanislaus County Fair.

FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

MV: Over the years, what has been the most popular attraction? MC: As a whole, the most popular is probably the carnival. Many want to find and ride the newest attraction, while some want to do the ferris wheel 3 or 4 times. Either way, the carnival is probably the most popular.

July Movies

MV: Are all the animals back? MC: All of the animals are back! We are doing all of the regular livestock shows and having the regular auctions for the dairy heifers, the beef cattle and the other species. Additionally we will also have the 4H Farmyard Experience petting zoo back for the families to enjoy. That attraction is always popular with young kids! The only real change we had for animals and the fair was the fair’s horse show held at Diamond Bar Arena in Ceres in May. We are expecting to be able to provide the full experience of 4H and FFA while you walk the barns this year. MV: The Stan Co fairgrounds are available for use all year long, what kind of events regularly book the fairground? MC: We host a number of swap meets throughout the year as well as some larger festivals like the Portuguese Festival, Central Valley Brewfest and more. A number of charities use our buildings for fundraising dinners and events. Coming out of the pandemic we have been extra busy and booked almost every weekend. This is a good thing! We have also started some conversations about hosting a new festival in 2023. With our calendar already filling up for 2023, we are looking at another busy year of events bringing fun to our area. MV: Can local companies buy tix in bulk to give to employees or customers ? MC: We offer corporate packets for companies to purchase tickets in bulk for their employees. They can email our box office directly at tickets@stancofair.com to get those orders going. We also have a number of coupons and promotions for the community to help with the expense of going to the fair. We know it is not cheap...nothing is cheap anymore! But our discounted admissions will help take the sting out of the costs. MV Beatles or Stones? MC: Beatles. My favorite song is probably Blackbird. However I really like their Chuck Berry cover Roll Over Beethoven. FAIRTI ME! Lets Go to the Fair! BIG VIEW

By Chris Murphy

County fairs have such a legendary history. These are the things that memories and movies are made of. From Elvis, to many small towns, the gathering place has always been the county fair. Pie eating contests, butter sculptures, the Midway, local farm animal contests and flat out the best food of all kinds. There is some sort of taste gene that gets switched on when you walk into the Stanislaus County Fair and smell the “Fair Food”. Everything seems to taste great and smell wonderful. In 1911, the Turlock Melon Carnival was the first version of the Stanislaus County Fair. In 1925, the American Legion took it over. 1933 4H and FFA livestock program began. 1933 the 38th Agriculture district was created which remains today. During WWII there were no fairs and the grounds were a Relocation center and later a rehabilitation center. In 1956, it was officially named the Stanislaus County Fair. In 1989 a record number of 261,089 attended the fair. All kinds a people attend the fair, kids, families, young couples and grandparents all go to the fair. But whoever you are, it is about the food, the rides, the tractor pulls, the music, the livestock and the FUN.

Since 1933, livestock has been a part of the fair. In agricultural areas like we have, presenting in these shows are a badge of honor for the kids that are raising and showing these animals. From bulls, pigs, rabbits and horses, there are so many great showcase animals. The animal sales begin July 10 and continue through the fair. This is a great presentation from the 4H and the FFA. Come out and support these kids that work so hard with these animals and keep our farming and agriculture industry alive. There is also a full space of exhibits, from floriculture, to engineering, ag mechanics, arts and crafts and more. Make sure you book some time to check out these cool areas of learning. And finally, no County Fair is complete with out destruction derbies, tractor pulls, and equestrian shows. In the Estrella Jalisco Area, you will be treated to two different destruction derbies, Obliteration and Annihilation. WOW. There will be Monster Truck Mayhem and Madness, a Mexican Rodeo and even some Motocross action. All of these shows start at 6:30 in the arena. STAY COOL 209 By Chris Murphy

We are off to a warm start in 2022 and as I write this, the faint smell of smoke is in the air. There are a few ways to beat the heat this summer. With this drought, we need to be careful for the fire risk and watch our air quality this summer. Even though our nights get a delta breeze, you need to take care during the day. Please remember to stay hydrated and that does the most good. There are many things to do in nice cool air conditioning like checking out a movie at the State or the Brenden, or find your inner Royal Robbins at Stonehenge Climbing or Alpine in Ripon, but being outdoors is the best. Take advantage of a restaurant’s covered patio and when you bike along the trails, there are many tree-covered places to take a break. But here are some fun destinations to enjoy some wetness.

Let's Swim

The pool at Graceada Park is open this summer. There is also a community pool in Empire that teaches water safety as well as a community pool at the Salvation Army Red Center and splash it up this summer. But please, stay out of the canals and the fast water in the rivers. It doesn’t end well.

Let's Splash

Sometimes all you need is a splash to freshen up your or your kids’ day. There are now 9 Splash Pads in the Modesto area so you and the kids can have a lot of wet fun and stay cool this summer. Join your kids and run through and get wet and have fun. https://www.modestogov.com/543/SplashGrounds

Let's Raft

As the drought goes into the 2nd year, there is still some pretty good water flow in our mountain rivers. The Stanislaus River has some of the best white water rafting for both the expert and the family level rafters. There are two main areas of rafting, above or below Knights Ferry. The wild river is really running this year and there are some Class I and II to white-knuckle rapids. There are some mellower trips too and for most, some plain old fun float trips. These are all easy to get to, both to start and to get out of the water. Please make sure that you raft these rivers with an expert. Even if the water looks calm, it isn’t. Enjoy the fun and raft to your ability. Here are some of the local rafting companies that will get you all hooked up, whether you go as a single, couple, family or group, there is something for everyone. Some even have raft and camping options so you can make a trip out of it.

Let's Get Misty

You can lower the temperature on your patio by installing misters. You can buy a set for around $30 at the home stores and they install quickly. They use little water and they make a difference if you need to be outside or have guests.

Stay Cool

Don’t overheat! It is important to not only look cool, but to actually be physically cool. It is great to get out there and run, ride and play but make sure you stay hydrated. It is funny, but longer sleeves actually keep you cooler. Keep water with you. You can over heat faster than you think and don’t push too hard. Don’t be afraid to stop and rest. Here are some simple tips to stay cool this summer Stay hydrated Eat more & smaller meals Close the shades in your house during the day Soak your feet in cold water Drink water or sports drinks with electrolytes, not soda Wear loose fitting cotton clothes in light colors

Keep your dogs cool.

The cement and pavement can be hot! Think about your feet when you go out side and walk on the street. Ouch Ouch Ouch ! Now think about your dog’s feet. Those little pads can cook quickly, especially if you have a little dog like I do. Pay attention to the temps and know how hot the ground can get

PUBLIC SERVICE

Fireworks and the great outdoors do not mix.

Please do not blow up illegal fireworks, no matter how cool you think it is. Protect your pets! They do not like the explosions. California is loaded with brush from our wet spring and it will end badly and even metro cities can go up in flames.

Thank you for not burning California FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

! u o Y k n Tha Wow, Graffiti Summer was great with so many fun events and great activities.

I want to give a huge shout out to the crew at Flying Turtle for making the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame Markers. This is an absolute labor of love for them to do this for our Cruise Legends and our city. They are a busy company, making cool concrete creations for homes and businesses and they take time to make these 18 x 18 markers to celebrate our local people. Thank you to Mat Rogers and his crew for being so amazing. Our Legends, the Graffiti USA Museum and the City of Modesto thank you. Best part is, that at the Graffiti USA Museum, it is Graffiti Summer all year long. We have some great events at the museum, with high school reunions, memorials and other pop up events. What makes it great is that we had so many new people visit the museum, and learn about our plans to bring this to life. Last month, we celebrated the annual Modesto Cruise Route Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame inductions. It was great that there were some members of the Graffiti Museum that were inducted, featuring Ron Pippin, Bob Rose and Chris Murphy. The Deacons Car Club also has Graffiti USA Board members and also inducted were Vern Silva and Danny Vierra. A special induction was made for Jenny Kenoyer of the Modesto City Council and Modesto High’s first female Yell Leader in 1953. These are the people that made Modesto’s cruising story and we are working hard to showcase this to the current and next generations. That is the magic of the Graffiti USA Museum. Last month, a very important event happened at the museum, bringing the Classic Car, Comic Book, Movie Cars, Collectables and a whole gallery of Cos Play characters and classic Pin Ups. This is truly the collision of pop culture, sub culture, Star Wars, Sci-Fi, and of course, Modesto’s unique and world famous Graffiti Culture that will be so important to the future of Graffiti USA Museum. Kids, families, dress up and the vintage pin ups all had a good time and there were cool collectables to be found. Thanks Middagh Goodwin for bringing this to the museum as it is the way of the future. Right now, there are actually a lot of things happening at the museum, but they are not really visible, but very important. The ceiling beams are getting steel reinforcement. Then we can insulate the ceiling, put sprinklers in and then we will realty start to get revved up. Thank you to Ron Pippin and his team of builders and supply companies that are really working hard and helping us build. We were fortunate to have received $500,000 from the City of Modesto to help us move the city forward following COVID and this will go directly to construction. HISTORY VIEW

McHenry Museum 50th Anniversary By Harrison Power

The City of Modesto and the McHenry Museum have much to celebrate in 2022. Earlier this year the original McHenry Library, longtime Downtown Modesto institution in which the Museum is housed, turned 110 years old. Now this month, the McHenry Museum achieves its own momentous milestone as it marks its 50th anniversary! For five decades, the McHenry Museum has worked to preserve, document, and maintain the history of Modesto and the surrounding areas of Stanislaus County. The Museum, owned by the City and supported through Parks-RecreationNeighborhoods, was the culmination of seven years’ work by the Citizens’ Cultural Center Committee headed by Heidi Warner, who then led the Museum for over 20 years. While the celebration will take place on July 6th 2022, the dedication of the McHenry Museum took place on July 4th 1972 to much fanfare and excitement prior to the start of the 4th of July Parade. City officials, councilmembers, county and state leaders, along with Modesto’s congressional representative all made a point to join in the festivities celebrating the grand opening of Modesto’s first true museum, with former Mayor Peter Johansen reciting the invocation and Peggy Mensinger making introductions. The honor of cutting the red, white, and blue ribbon was given to two special and befitting guests: Ora Louise McHenry Condrey and Barbara Jean McHenry Pauley, granddaughters of original library benefactor Oramil McHenry. The Pauley Foundation, with the same philanthropic spirit as Barbara Jean’s grandfather, contributed to the renovation efforts to turn the old library into a proper permanent home for the Museum’s collection and displays. Reflecting on the Museum and its future ahead David Seymour, Executive Director and Past President of the McHenry Museum & Historical Society, stated, “On July 4, 1972 the McHenry Museum opened

to the public. Our amazing building is a celebration of the rich history of Modesto and Stanislaus County. Between the City of Modesto and the McHenry Museum & Historical Society, when we cut the ribbon to re-dedicate the Museum this July 6th, we will usher in the next 50 years of celebration of our community.” To participate in this month’s historical celebration on July 6th, you can join us at 4:30PM for the re-dedication and ribbon cutting with a mixer hosted from 5:00PM-7:00PM.

Recumbent Bikes Are Really Fast By Efren Martinez

Modern Eco-Friendly Home For Sale

When I think of a Recumbent bike, I think of our Uncle Bob. It wasn’t too long ago when Uncle Bob got one and it was the first time I had ever seen anything like it. At first look I thought of it being odd and it reminded me of an adult tricycle. Boy was I totally wrong. These 2 and/or 3 wheel bikes are actually ingenious. For example an athlete on a good low racer with rear fairing has about 30% less drag than a racing cyclist. An amateur cyclist on a full recumbent bike can be really fast reaching speeds of more than 50 mph. The current recumbent world record for the 200 meter sprint is over 87-mph according to hovelotechnic.com. I’m not one that would want to go that fast on any bike, heck I don’t even drive over 70mph. Still the thought of being able to get on

a bike and go from here to there as quick as I would in a car does sound intriguing. Think about how cool is this when you can jump on a Recumbent bike and lay back in comfort without falling down. Here you are saving money in gas and burning loads of calories at the same time. It’s also a plus that you’re being totally green with no harmful emissions. Cheers to Mother Earth! If this sounds like something you’d be interested in I applaud you. Recumbent bikes can be found pretty much everywhere these days including at any of our local bike shops. Let’s go green with pedal power alongwith a positive plus for living a healthy lifestyle. In the words of Captain Planet, “The Power is Yours!”

GO MODESTO Music in the Plaza

The Summer may be heating up but the 10th Street Plaza has some cool music to get your feet moving every Friday 7-9 pm. Kicking off the month of July is the Rockit Gear Showcase with Girls Smash Guitars, Horizon Point and Indie Daze, come out and see these fabulous local groups each with some fantastic female musicians. July 8th the Wet Banditos will bring some funk, rock and Latin grooves to Music in the Plaza. If you are looking for something a little different don’t miss the Creole Jazz Kings playing some great jazz standards and Dixieland. July 22nd David Dow and Friends featuring Tea Noelle will be playing an eclectic mix of rock, soul, jazz and Latin jams. Ending the month on July 29th don’t miss Overdryve playing that good ole rock and roll music.

SAFETY VIEW

MOBAND VIEW

MoBand Season Finale By Chris Murphy Besides the 4th of July parade, there is probably no greater Modesto tradition than MoBand’s Concerts in the Park. Since the 1940s and 50s, the Mancini Bowl in Graceada Park has been home to MoBand. As long as I can remember it has been a tradition and I was fortunate to play in MoBand during the late 70s. Mancini Bowl is a special place, actually built by hand by Frank “Proof ” Mancini This is truly one of the best community events in any town anywhere in the USA. Make sure that you are a part of this slice of ModestoCana and take your friends and family to Graceada Park for the rest of the 2022 concerts.

Report Illegal Fireworks with GoModesto!

July 7 – American Songbook July 14 – Hot Summer Hits Special Bonus 7th Show July 21 – Rockin’ the Bowl with Triple D. MoBand Concerts in the Park and the 7th Rock in the Bowl show are free, thanks to MoBand Sponsors, a great City of Modesto partnership and donations from local people like you. Invite your friends to truly experience Modesto. Concerts are 8 – 10pm in Graceada Park. Don’t forget to bring a blanket and picnic and get out early on the day of the event. Please don’t put blankets or tape out before Thursday. Get the season updates and donate at www.moband.org and follow on Facebook @moband1919

We love the beauty, excitement, and fun of fireworks just like everyone else, but with California’s drought and the safety of our community, we need to be vigilant to report and refrain from using illegal fireworks in our region. Not only can fireworks start fires, scare animals and children, but they are ILLEGAL and need to be reported. To report illegal fireworks and to promote public safety this summer, please call the non-emergency line at 209-552-2470 or use the GoModesto! app to make a formal complaint. Remember, you can use the GoModesto! app for many other needs, concerns, and updates (report tagging & camping, see activity guides, request bulky item pick-ups, and much more!) and is a great way to stay involved with the city.

Thank you for enjoying the holiday safely and keeping Modesto and its residents safe!

BARGAIN VIEW Sizzling Summertime

By Monica Barber

Summertime pairs warm sunny weather with many things to do in the sun. But there is also plenty to do while staying cool. Ms. M’s sipping an iced tea lemonade and trying to keep up with her summer reading challenge from the Stanislaus County Library which ends in August. Don’t worry, it’s not too late to catch up on your reading and summer fun. Here are some ways to spend your time in July, without spending too much money. Happy Fourth of July! Summertime definitely would not be the same without the family gathering, fireworks and the Independence Day parade in Downtown Modesto! Continuing with local tradition, the city of Modesto will hosts its annual 4th of July parade which it has been celebrated since 1874. The parade route follows its tradition path through downtown with entries of floats, local groups, marching bands and more. Info: http://www.modestojulyparade. com/ Enjoying music in the garden during lunch is great for the soul. Gallo Center’s Brown Bag Concert Series offers free lunchtime concerts every Friday from Noon to 1p.m. in their outdoor Modesto Rotary Music Garden featuring some of our area’s local musical acts. July 8th welcomes local favorite, the Josh Rosenblum Band to brighten up your lunch hour. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch and a

blanket or towel to sit on while they enjoy the music. Check out on this popular series. Info https://www.galloarts.org/AboutUs/ MusicGarden.aspx The Downtown Modesto 3rd Thursday Art Walk returns on July 21st from 5-8 p.m. Get out during the cooler evening hours and enjoy a stroll, or sit in a parklet while you view the works of local crafters and artisans. Mitslin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, and Dragonfly Art for Life are among the participating galleries. Many galleries will display signage or balloons to assist in locating their gallery spaces easily. Info: http://modestoartwalk.com/ Attending the theater can go a long way in lifting the spirits, for yourself and others. I hope you are all enjoying this hot summer. Recently, I visited our Farmers Market, one of my favorite activities, especially in the summertime. The Modesto Farmers Market has been around since 1979. The locals who grow fresh produce for sale are there. You can also find fun homemade items for sale. My favorite booth that I always come back to is the Bolani. The Bolani is Afghan stuffed flatbreads with dips and sauces. It’s delicious. I also love picking up a pretty bouquet of fresh flowers from Kelly Flower Farm for my loved ones and myself. Please help support our local farmers by show-

Hey Modesto! ing up Thursday and Saturday mornings. When you shop here, you support our local growers, who provide fruits and veggies straight from their farm to your table. The Modesto Certified Farmers Market is located on 16th street between I and H, next to the Stanislaus Library. It is open from 8 am to 1 pm. I am super excited to tell you all that my absolute favorite thing to do in the summer is back. Concert In The Park! This is a fun community-building activity with friends and family. Our very own MoBand plays at Graceada park on Thursday nights! We have two concerts left. July 7th is “American Song Book,” and July 14th is titled “Hot Hits.” The concert starts at 8 pm, but people usually like to come a bit early. Enjoy a picnic while listening to the music. You can bring some friends and lay out a blanket. Get some of your favorite foods that you bought at the market to eat. Bring dinner, snacks, drinks, and even some games to play. You can sometimes find food trucks or ice cream trucks that swoop by now and then! This is a summer activity you don’t want to miss, and I highly recommend you come by before it’s too late. I hope you all have a safe and wonderful Independence Day. Stay cool, Modesto.

ZEN VIEW By Mary Layton

The best thing about getting older is that we may actually learn from our mistakes and change the way we have been thinking. I love how Abraham Lincoln puts it: “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Looking back on my own life I can say that being less selfish and keeping the focus on the larger picture has been so much more rewarding. Life’s a mystery! I think that’s a good thing to remember. If we could only bow to the fact that we really know so little about life! Instead most of us act as though we know it all or that we can judge and define everything, or that we have all the answers. We insist that we are right, that we are on the right track; the others got it all wrong. We feel frustrated, disappointed and stressed out. Who knows? There may be a reason why ev-

erything isn’t going as we expected. Could it be that the universe is trying to guide us where we are supposed to go? I have learnt that we need to listen more, wait a little while before we judge and change our attitude by questioning our assumptions. Not that I would say that hardships and struggles are desirable but they may just be a blessing in disguise. When the going gets tough we try harder, we may seek guidance from a Higher Power and reach out for help from others. It is then that we may learn something important.
