Blues on the Horizon By Eric Benson
The Modesto Noir Series Picks Up Hitchhikers This Month by Professor Arnold Schmidt, CSU Stanislaus Randy Siefkin, Modesto Film Society/State Theatre Join Modesto’s historic State Theatre and The Gallo Center for the Arts as they a present a classic film, radio drama and discussion of two takes on the perils of hitchhiking, part of the first annual Modesto Noir Series. The State Theatre presents a virtual introductory lecture on Director Ida Lupino’s 1953 film The Hitch-Hiker which premiers on Thursday, May 13. Lupino, an accomplished actor, was one of the few women to direct a film noir; her motion picture can viewed at no charge on the Library of Congress website, as well the usual sites. The Gallo Center’s virtual recreation of radio broadcast of Louise Fletcher’s The Hitchhiker, originally broadcast in 1941 as part of the Orson Welles Show, can be accessed at any time on the Center’s website (www.thegallocenter.org). Noir fans are encouraged to view both the virtual introduction to the film and the radio play prior to May 20’s live discussion of both productions featuring cast members and crew of the Gallo Center’s Hitchhiker and film noir fans from The State Theatre in what should be a lively discussion of the merits of hitchhiking, film making and radio production. Audience questions are welcome.

On May the 4th the USPS will be launching a new set of stamps
inspired by Modesto’s very own George Lucas epic serial Star Wars. The main post office on Kearney will be rolling them out in celebratory fashion so make sure to stop on by the post office during business hours. The characters fans meet in the first “Star Wars” film, “Star Wars: A New Hope,” are droids, namely C-3PO and R2-D2 and droids have continued to play pivotal roles throughout the “Star Wars” galaxy. With 10 dazzling new characterinspired stamps, the Postal Service salutes beloved droids from the “Star Wars” galaxy and the imagination that brings these technological marvels to the screen. Representing more than four decades of innovation and storytelling, the droids featured in each pane of 20 stamps are IG-11, R2-D2, K-2SO, D-O, L3-37, BB-8, C-3PO, a GNK (or Gonk) power droid, 2-1B surgical droid and C1-10P, commonly known as “Chopper.” #HomeofStarWars

A little shout out to one of the Valley’s young lions of music Raul Ontiveros. I met Raul at Dave Dow’s Jazz jam, Raul was tearing it up on the Trombone, then switching to Bass. Raul hails from the small town of Grayson CA, where music was part of the family. At the suggestion of his brother, he started playing Bass with the main influence Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Influenced by some of the Funk and Soul players like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, RHCP, and Youtube creators such as Davie 504, Adam Neely and especially Jacob Collier. Raul Subscribe to our You Tube channel at: youtube.com/modestoview
Also plays Jazz, Rock, Blues and fusion music and teaches music on Bass, Trombone, Guitar and piano. Raul performs with Ivory Flats, Josh Rosenblum Band and Blue Monday Band as well as the Jazz Jam Ralston’s Goat Thursday nights. Raul teaches professionally now at Guitar Center Modesto, you can call them and ask for him by name if interested. Check him out online by his stage name Raul Slaps, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Spotify and of course Tiktok! And when asked “Beatles or Stones?” Raul “Beatles… they changed the world.” You will hear more of Raul, if you need a dependable great musician give him a holler! Well, folks thanks to all you good people doing the right thing, wearing masks, social distancing and getting that Soul Vaccination, things are improving. Remember to reach out and be kind as a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. We also need to support our local business and economy, so it is still there as things continue to improve. So please continue to support our local venues. Peace out, Eric Benson! Need to get me or co-conspire with me, the cell is (209) 918-7033 And be like Alpha Beta and tell a friend.
