is getting chilly, the evenings start to get dark and then this month ends with one of my favorite days of the year, Halloween. Becky and I love decorating for Halloween more than any other holiday and we hope you will stop by to trick or treat. Our pirate ship will be there to greet you. Our ace photographer and illustrator MJ Mangano has so much fun with our October cover and it gets better each year as we create our own cast of our creepy Modesto characters. The McHenry Mansion is getting into it this year and they are doing a whole exhibit called “Morbid Obsession” with authentic Victorian tools and messages from the dead and the afterlife. I love it when our great historical places come to life in different ways. We will be featuring as many haunted homes and places on our Instagram @modestoview so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. Tag your haunted pics #modestoview and we will look for them. This month is just flat out wonderful. There has been so much going on. We have new murals downtown, there are new restaurants open and the cafes and the patios are the place to be. October brings us the Downtown Sampler on

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

October 8, which is a great way to taste the treats from our downtown eateries. You know what is really cool is that all of our downtown restaurants are all locally owned. This is really special and you know that we love to do business and support our friends in the community by eating and drinking local. Our community is healthier when we support our local businesses, like those that advertise here in the pages of Modesto. But right now, you need to buy your Sampler tickets at www.modestosampler.com What really warms my heart as it gets

colder is LIVE MUSIC. Truly, live music makes a community feel so alive, young, current and electric. I just watched the Ken Burns Country Music series, and it was great to see the recognition that our own Maddox Brothers & Rose got as the root of country, hillbilly, rockabilly and rock and roll. It was great to honor K.C. “Don Juan” Maddox at the MAMAs in 2013. This year, we are celebrating 20 years. WOW. This year we celebrate 20 years of MAMA Winners and recognize the DJs of KFIV radio for the MAMA Lifetime Award. Please vote for your faves at www.modestoareamusic.com and tune in to watch the show live on October 15, live from the State Theatre at www. modestoview.com Finally, thanks to all of you that have donated and supported our local nonprofits and have survived my relentless emails and phone calls asking you for money. We are so fortunate that we can raise funds for orgs that do so much good in our community. Thanks for supporting our 100th MoBand Season, Heart Walk, Power of the Purse, and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Community Hospice, East LaLoma Park, Rotary Clubs and so much more. This is a really giving town for both funds and volunteerism. I am proud to be one of the regular fundraisers and I will be calling you again soon as we have some big things coming up. Thanks to you all for reading ModestoView, celebrating the good in our community and making a difference. ModestoView readers and advertisers are the best people in town and I hope to see you out and about. Please let me know what you like about, or how we can improve ModestoView. We always strive to make it better as it is for you. Wishing you a spooky Rocktober, Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

On the Cover

This is MJ Mangano’s favorite cover of the year. We are so fortunate to have April Victorine, husband Rob and boys Mike And Ethan who have turned themselves into the Frankenstein couple with some mummy and werewolf kids. April is the designer and make up artist. You can see more of her cosplay design at https://www.facebook.com/ HopeitHolds4/. MJ says, “I can’t say enough about how her and her family support all of our projects with such enthusiasm and creative flair” FOR MORE MODESTO INFO: www.modestoview.com

ART VIEW A Spooky Time of Year By Jim Christiansen October is that spooky time of the year.

Not Halloween, but my birthday, where this year’s ghoul is enrolling in Medicare supplemental insurance junk mail. But as it is my kind of month so let the party begin, and the theme is Murals. Last month, a simian vision by FASM on Downey Avenue, where a Graffiti Summer motif had been displayed, gave a peek to the Season of FASM. Currently his work in on display out at Vintage Faire, as Aaron Vickery, FASM Creative, hung in September. But the number one event in Art this year is FASM Creative presents DoMo Walls – Downtown Modesto Mural Festival, the International Mural Festival. For the second year, Seven International Artists, will install seven new Giant murals, over the course of 3 days in downtown Modesto. You can get a preview by strolling downtown to Chartreuse Muse to the beautiful results of last years’ festival, all beautifully done. This year’s roster of artists includes, Jenna Morello of Brooklyn, PAWN of Sacramento, Bacon of Toronto, Mez Data from Austin, COBRE from Argentine, Shack Chavez of Mexico, and Modesto Artist J. Gomar. Come see the artists at work and see how the big colorful murals get done. October 2 to October 5. The Black heArts Market returns to Queen Bean, with an overflow of artist and crafter vendors October 11. Show runs 6 to 10 pm, and don’t be surprised if some Halloween themed art in the mix. I’ll be the scary one with the white beard and red shirt, possibly X-mas lights to push art holiday sales season. A new venue has opened in town, for Art, Music and Theater down near Moon and Sixpence. Located at 10th and E Streets, the Modesto Conservatory of Music, Art and Theater opened recently and started hosting studio hours and soft events in September. October 19th, it will be rocking with vendors with their opening Artisan and Craft Fair, 10 to 4 pm. There will be a full house of wares in the venue, as my last email from them showed only 3 slots left for the call to artists. That’s the first big Art event, but the name implies the Conservatory will host Music and Theatrical events, too. More information: www.modestoconservatory. com Third Thursday Art Walk falls on my actual Birthday, October 17. We may see some changes coming up for Art Walk in 2020. I want to thank Nancy Young

and Downtown Improvement District for the past several years of managing the paperwork and producing the maps. Patrick Barr is the featured Artist at Barking Dog this Month with the art change October 16. Tri-Chromatic Gallery featured an installation theme to the moving Willow, in conjunction with the movie playing the State Theatre. Check the State’s movie calendar, and there may be more such art keyed to the popular screen. For after Halloween art, seen Our Lady of the underground at the Queen Bean featuring live music and artist Nadine Barret.

On a memorial note, our friend Ed Cesena passed away last month, his legacy show in Tracy where he won many awards for his jazz themed watercolors and acrylic paintings. Ed was 91, painting up to the end of his career here in Modesto. His home studio a favorite spot on the Stanislaus Artist Studio Tour, he will be missed by many. The early-bird deadline to apply as an artist for the 2020 Open Studio roster, is October 31, with final deadline to apply is January 15.

Our favorite local distillery, Corbin Cash, has grown exponentially in the last year. If you need a refresher on their awesome sweet potato spirits, head to modestoview.com, PerformingView – So Much Theatre. PerformingView By Kaye Osborn The dog days of August have arrived. There is still a lot of good theater to see and embrace, and read the previous article we wrote on David Souza and Corbin Cash. The distillery rotates between making rye products and sweet potato products depending on the time of year. When it’s rye season, they’re making whiskey and when it’s sweet potato season, you guessed it: they’re making vodka, gin and liqueur. It’s harvest season for the sweet potato so boy are they busy! Their sweet potato vodka won a Double Gold in 2011 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and a Double Gold at the 2013 Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America 70th Annual Convention & Exposition. Although the brand new 1917 cask strength whiskey is what brought us to the distillery this time, they have 6 great spirits to sample. Find your favorite, buy a bottle (or two, or three) and share with your friends. We really dig the sweet potato liquor (we’re on bottle number 3 at our house) but the new 1917 is our new sipper go-to. It’s smooth with a faint scent

of wood, on the nose you’ll get a touch of spice reminiscent of vanilla chai, but sweet takes charge of this whiskey with caramel notes teasing your tastebuds. This is a dreamy whiskey, folks! Our bottle won’t last long! The unique thing about Corbin Cash that we truly love, is that Dave is involved in the entire process. He’s there when the seeds are planted, he’s there at harvest, he’s there for washing and boxing, he’s there when it’s fermenting and distilling, he’s there when it’s bottled and sold. He won’t take full credit though, he humbly told us it takes over 50 people to make one bottle of Corbin Cash. When you enjoy your cocktail, you are holding the work of machinists, planters, harvesters, forklift drivers-there are so many people involved! We encourage you to think about that the next time you buy produce, or you know, a bottle of whiskey. They are open for tasting and tours now, and on Thursday and Friday nights you can hear some great local music. There’s plenty of seating and a new horseshoe pit and corn hole, too. Special thanks to Edith Duran for being fabulous and letting us hang out entirely way too long. Sip on, friends!

ers! The new theater season has arrived and it’s time to get your season subscriptions. There are many package deals available. Keep in mind high school and college productions. There is a lot of talent in our area. My grand daughter is auditioning at her elementary school for Mary Poppins Jr. It was fun to coach her about having an impressive and memorable audition. Standing still, project, make eye contact, be confident and enjoy the moment on stage. I am hopeful she gets cast and embraces rehearsals and performances.

An ingenious and wildly comic romp play. Poking antic fun at the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz” and the corny thrillers of Hollywood’s heyday, the play is a non-stop barrage of laughter as those assembled (or at least those who aren’t killed off) untangle the mystery of the “Stage Door Slasher.” Presented by The West Side Players October 4,5, 6, 11, 12, 13 www.westsidetheatre.org Modesto Junior College The Hunchback of Notre Dame Oct. 25,26, 31 and Nov. 1, 2: 7 PM Nov. 3: 2 PM The Davis High School Drama Department will be performing Clue On Stage on in the Little Theatre. This farcical whodunit follows Mr. Green, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Professor Plum, Miss. Scarlet, and Mrs. Peacock through an evening of blackmail, intrigue, and murder. Based on the movie and board game, Clue On Stage is a 90-minute fast-paced adventure with fun characters and a moving plot! Tickets $7 for students $9 for adults Reserved by emailing Bryan.L@monet.k12.ca.us Also available at the door October 18 and 19th 7 pm The Modesto High School Theatre Department presents The Amish Project. The play opens in the MHS Auditorium on October 3. The Amish Project is a theatrical look at the Nickel Mines Massacre that occurred in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania in October of 2006 when a gunman entered an Amish school house and shot ten Amish girls. While the play deals with the tragedy itself, at the heart of the story is the incredible display of charity and grace that came from the Amish community to the non-Amish victims of the tragedy, especially the shooter’s family and the healing that followed. The Great Potsticker Hunt We are on the hunt. ! s er k c ti s ot P k? as u yo t ha w r fo The hunt

By Trader Murf @modestochris

From left China Gate, Fat Wong, Coach’s Corner, Minnie’s – the gold standard, Tokyo Express bottom, Shangri-La

Now what would lead us to this adventure?

The collective community is still reeling from the closure of the kitchen at Minnie’s. One of the best things I have ever eaten is the Minnie’s Potsticker, and that combined with Suzanna Lau’s service and the ever toxic Jerk from Josie, Diane and Sherri, made for a wonderful evening, supported by the special fried rice, BBQ pork and more. But alas, this is no longer. I am on a mission to find the replacement to all of these treats, and in particular the Potsticker. This year, we have been sampling many different locations and have some great options. Some that are more fried, some that are steamed and some that are both steamed and finished in the pan. But how close are they to Minnie’s. So far we have been checking out the offerings from Ming’s, ShangriLa, China Gate, East China Town, China Express, Bejing, Fat Wong, Tokyo Express, Coaches Corner and more. Still to check out are Imperial Garden, House of Potsticker,

Dynasty and others that we have missed. We have found some that are close, but not all the way. But here is where we need your help. What do you think? For those of you that just love Potstickers, we need you to scour our area and help us find the best Potsticker. You may like it fried or steamed, but tell us what you love and why you love it. But here is where it gets tricky. Who else also has a bar to find that kind of cocktail that goes with great Chinese food. Who has a great Mai Tai? Who has custom glasses to make your experience better? Who makes a great original Mai Tai, Scorpion, or Zombie? Can we create the whole package? The bar at Shangri La? The cocktails at Bejing? Let’s explore the exotic Polynesian and Chinese offerings and see what’s out there. We know that Minnie’s still makes the amazing Jerk and their other specialties, but we should be making sure that our local restaurants that try to create a good dining experience feel the Modesto love too. Plus, it is always fun to try something new.

We will be posting this article on both www. modestoview.com and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/modestoview and need your contributions. Over the next few months, we will collect the info and report back to you, our Potsticker loving community. Let’s have some Potsticker fun Modesto. We need Potstickers! Like and comment at www.modestoview.com and facebook.com/modestoview and we will be picking random winners for ModestoView SWAG. See you out and about.

UNPLUGGED VIEW

October Surprises By Aaron Rowan

October Movies “Freedom in art, freedom in society, this is the double goal towards which all consistent and logical minds must strive.” - Victor Hugo When the original title role star of Verdi’s

opera Rigoletto first appeared at the 1851 premiere, he was so uncomfortable with his hunchback costume that he suffered a panic attack when the moment came for him to make his entrance. Verdi saw him frozen in place and gave him a good shove, such that his grand entrance was a tumble onto the stage, to the amusement of the audience who mistook it for an intended bit of physical comedy. The opera, much like the Victor Hugo play upon which it was based, had to navigate serious hurdles with the

censors of nineteenth century Europe, one of whom labeled it “a repugnant example of immorality and obscene triviality,” but came to be one of the world’s most beloved opera works. Rigoletto’s famous aria ‘La Donna è Mobile’ could be heard being sung in the streets of Venice the morning after the premiere. Opera Modesto presents this iconic piece at the Gallo Center this month, with artistic director Roy Stevens portraying Rigoletto. Friday 10/25 at 7:30 PM and Sunday 10/27 at 2 PM. Drop by an hour before showtime for a fun and informative pre-opera talk on the history of the piece and the cultural climate of its day. Tickets run $20-$89. www.operamodesto.org.

INTER VIEW By Chris Murphy Modesto is great because of our community of people that give back, share their talents and give of their time beyond what their job is. I think it is this type of community service that is the secret sauce of Modesto. What I have found is that when people have a talent, they put it to work in ways that lift up our community. ModestoView has made it our priority to find and work with people that want to create a positive dialog. When they have a special talent or skill, this can help amplify this issue. I have worked with Mike Daniel, Sam Kneiss and the Final Cut Media group for nearly 20 years. I began to work with them back when they managed the community public access TV process in the basement of the SCOE building. They would team up with me for the MAMA Awards, local video projects that shined a positive light on our community. Today, Mike Daniel leads Final Cut and his community spirit is still as strong and their professional media and video services are first class. He and his team recently produced a 90-minute long Legends of the Cruise interview show that included the late Bart Bartoni and many of the Cruise Legends enshrined on the Walk of Fame and has begun a new community podcast that ModestoView will support. Not only is Mike a good community volunteer, his role as a single father is his greatest care. His appreciation for his community, and like me, wants to create a community where his kids will WANT to live. Let’s get to know Mike. ModestoView: Where did you grow up? Mike Daniel: I had the privilege of growing up in our community. I was raised primarily in South Modesto. I loved growing up in that community – it introduced me to various cultures at a young age, and challenged me to see past what many consider to be a MV: How did you discover the world of video and media production? MD: Folks who know me know that I grew up a die-hard pro wrestling fan. Watching Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and others do their thing captivated me. What caught me most wasn’t the in-ring action per say, but how it all came together. It created this interest in production, and all of the moving parts. As I got older, I had the chance to learn the pro wrestling craft and have my own community access pro wrestling TV show. We’d cram 50 people into an old warehouse in Stockton and produce several 30-minute episodes for TV. Through doing that, I learned project management, graphic design, videography, and how to manage people. I joke that pro wrestling taught me about business and life. MV: Video production is a hard business, what does it take to stay in front of the new tech and techniques? MD: Stay young. I mean that literally and figuratively. The key to success is to stay in front of creative trends, and continually groom the next generation of cinematographers and producers. I think what makes Final Cut unique is that we are creative risk-takers. We see each project as a chance

14

Community Creativity –

Mike Daniel

to push the envelope in terms of look, feel, message and style. We pride ourselves on creating content that always feels unique, and unafraid to try new things. MV: What do you find most interesting about the Modesto area? MD: Having grown up here, I’ve had the chance to see the community evolve. And I feel today we are in the midst of a tremendous evolution. The next generation of concerned citizen-leaders are taking on the role of community advocates, and its inspiring. Between the movement downtown, events like Gala in Graceada, and the movement to create a Children’s Museum, gorgeous murals on every corner, and a Cruise Museum honoring our amazing past, I feel we are at the apex of a cultural renaissance that will truly separate Modesto from other valley cities. MV: Like me, you left Modesto for a time and returned to continue your career, what brought you back? MD: Professionally I saw Modesto as a market chock-full of opportunity. I took what I learned running firms in Seattle and Washington DC and applied it to my own agency. I saw there was an intersection of need and timing that would embrace an agency like Final Cut – one that is obsessively focused with creating good content and telling the story of our community in a meaningful way. I feel we’re doing that, and I’m so proud of it. Personally, above all else, I’m a dad first. I am so lucky to have the pleasure of being a father to my seven year-old son Matthew. He’s taught me far more about life and priorities than I’ve taught him so far. Being a good dad to him is my passion.

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

MV: What is your approach to creativity for your clients? MD: Get to know your clients in a meaningful way. I look at each engagement as a true partnership. Our success is their success. Many think storytelling is easy. It’s not. Understanding, then articulating a brand that someone is very passionate about takes similar passion – and at Final Cut, we focus on that as our mission: to produce best-inclass content and offer a better-than-class experience every time. When you do that, creativity flows because you learn to trust each other. MV: I was fortunate to be your guest on the first community video podcast, what do you hope to accomplish with this new series? MD: To tell the story of our community in a thoughtful, honest way. And I feel the best way to do that is to bring in divergent opinions, as them the same question, and see where the corollaries exist. Our first series “What is a Community Brand” is bringing together artists, advocates, and community leaders to discuss what and why a community brand is so important. The project is early on and will refine itself over time – but early on we are very excited about the message and the responses we got. MV: What are some of the misconceptions about Modesto that you want to correct? MD: That we’re simply a small-minded cow town ran by old, generational money and influence. I hope to be one of many that see that as a false premise – and that we’re a growing community full of creatives, business-minded folks, and those who see

that Modesto has retained its small-town charm but is growing into a bustling metro community. And this only happens if people are ready and willing to take risks and are unafraid to try something new and different. If we don’t evolve, we die. I firmly believe that. MV: How to you think we can best work as a community to create a perception that we are a creative and innovative place to live and work? MD: If we work as a true collaborative, and not in silos. I feel we have a surplus of passion but work at a deficit of organization. Everyone has their idea of what makes a community thrive, but it’s much more difficult to decide together how to bring those ideas together in a cohesive message. It’s not impossible. Look to Sacramento for example. Different opinions coming together to create a kaleidoscope of who they are: Farm to Fork capital, artiss haven, sports town…in conversations with folks in that community, it all started with a passion for creating a message. It wasn’t about their specific message; it was about a message. I feel any good city image is built upon the various things that make them unique. For us, it’s our cruising and rockabilly heritage as much as it’s our ode to cinema through George Lucas, our role in the wine and almond industry, and today – as a place where business leaders are looking to create the next ag technology tool, or tell a story about their brand. MV: Describe your ideal day in Modesto. MD: I just had one! It started with a Nitro Cold Brew at Heart & Soul with a friend visiting from DC, then we headed over to Picasso’s to talk art with Jordi Camps over a sandwich. After that, I introduced her to several friends and talked about life, business, and friendship. As she left, she walked away so impressed with the sense of community we have. She couldn’t wait to tell her friends she was staying with in San Francisco about how fun and unique Modesto truly is. MV: Our signature question:Beatles or Stones? MD: While I have a hearty appreciation for both, I’m a Beatles guy. Ob-La-Di, Ob-LaDa is one of my go-to’s. MV: Anything else you want to add? MD: As a small business owner in the community I love, it’s so exciting to see other like-minded young(ish) leaders emerge. I hope we all take the time to appreciate the opportunity we have and pay it forward to the next generation we hope to encourage to invest in the community in their own way.

MAMA AWARDS VIEW

MAMA Turns 20

By Chris Murphy

It was twenty years ago today.. that Chris Ricci and I were enjoying lunch at Harvest Moon and wondered what

we could do to celebrate the amazing musical talent in the greater Modesto area. Flying Blind was delighting thousands in the Plaza, Grandaddy was playing to huge festival crowds around the world, Megan Slankard and Matt Nathanson were honing their craft and the place was buzzing. We decided that a major celebration was in order and created the 2000 Modesto Area Music Awards, that would be a black tie event, like the Golden Globes or the Grammys. We teamed up with the DoubleTree’s John Lodi who booked us Club Max and we overstuffed the place with musicians, civic officials fans and handed out 7 MAMA Awards, all handmade out of Mrs. Butterworth bottles by Rebecca Murphy. After the show, we knew we had outgrown that space and then moved to the fabulous historic State Theatre in 2001. Over the years, we have had many special Hall of Fame moments as we celebrated an increasingly diverse group of musicians and bands, the talents of musicians and local music champions like Ernie Bucio, Marie Gallo, Grace Lieberman, Chester Smith, Kent Whitt and the Downbeats, Roddy Jackson, Steve Ashman, Michael Allsup and many more. One of the most special nights ever was the celebration of Don Maddox, of the legendary Modesto based Maddox Brothers and Rose, that originated the bass slappin’ beat of Rockabilly music in 1938. This music, thanks to the nationwide reach of radio, lead to the birth of Rock and Roll. The 92 year old Maddox, lead a group of our own local Rockabilly musicians like it was 1945. These are special moments celebrating special people that make the Modesto area music so interesting and vibrant. Over the years, MAMA has become a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, Middagh Goodwin has taken the lead role, and we have added musical categories, had temporary homes at the Fat Cat, and the Gallo Center during the inaugural opening week in 2007 and all the while, found an amazing pool of new talent, great bands, new sounds and unique experiences. There is really no other event like the MAMAs that celebrate across so many different genres and musician of all categories hanging out for the evening and celebrating together. This year’s event will be very special as we will be awarding musical scholarships, and thanks to our amazing media partner Central Valley TV, will again be streaming this show around the word for thousands to watch. I hope you will take time and check out www.modestoareamusic.com and check out the nominees and please vote. Most importantly, make a point to go see live music at it is one of the things that makes Modesto vibrant.

Please join Modesto celebrating Modesto Area music. ebrating the DJs of KFIV 1360 AM, that was the soundtrack of Modesto from the 50s through the 70s. We all knew these DJs, they hosted battle of the bands in McHenry Village, woke us up with the early rock and roll, broadcast song dedications from Burge’s Drive In by the late Dwight Case. KFIV welcomed the rockers of the day and back when you could call and request your fave songs, or stop by the station and pick up the weekly Top 40, our radio kept us all connected. Now there are a million channels and streams and we no longer have that community connection that the legendary AM DJ gave us. We look forward to celebrating, Radio Rick Meyers, Derek Waring, John Chapell, Kenny Robert, Bob DeLeon, Wes Page and others that will be joining us at the 20th Anniversary MAMA Awards on October 15. Two Decades with Ears to the Future By Middagh Goodwin

I have said it before and I will say it again, who would have imagined that when Murphy and Ricci decided to host a local music award show that it would still be going strong twenty years later? The landscape of local music has waxed and waned over the last two decades. Many of the clubs, that dominated the scene have closed their doors, bands have broken up and events have come and gone. Growing from seven awards to over twenty, representing everything from Pop to Hard Rock, Latin and Punk. Members of the Youth Bands were not even born when the MAMAs first happened at Club Maxx back in the year 2000. This year we are having some very special performances to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Modesto Area Music Awards. Flying Blind who dominated the clubs, festivals and the airwaves back before Y2K will be performing their hit song “Smokescreen.” Another mainstay of the early MAMAs was UVR, you may remember hearing “Got 2 Girlfriends” playing on repeat on area radio. They toured the US and released three albums between 2001-2007.

This year there will be a very special performance from the “Women of the MAMAs” Shelly Streeter, Marirose Powell, Patty Castillo Davis, Mattea Overstreet and Tiffany Rose Delacruz, singing a medley of songs celebrating Woodstocks 50th Anniversary. The MAMAs will celebrate and honor the radio Disc Jockeys of KFIV, the legendary radio station that played the Rock & Roll from the 50s through the 70s, with a staff of iconic DJs, they played the local hits, broadcast from the drive-ins and hosted the battle of the bands and played the soundtrack of our life for decades. This award is presented by the Modesto Bee. The MAMAs will be presented at the fabulous historic State Theatre on Tuesday, October 15th, beginning at 6:00 pm. This is an invitation-only black-tie event. All nominees and guests attend free of charge. Each category winner receives the treasured laser cut stainless steel MAMA Carhop Award, donated each year by Beeler Industries. The 2019 MAMAs will be streamed live by Central Valley Reports at www.ModestoView. com. Voting is live at www.modestoareamusic. com/vote and will continue until Sunday, October 13th at 11:59 pm. So you have time to check out all the MAMAnees before casting your votes. One vote per person and please be sure to validate your email address to confirm your votes. COMEDY VIEW Hello, hello, hello. It’s October! The month I get a haircut, a new dress

MAMA HA HA By Felicia Aleman

and shave my legs because it’s the MAMA Awards. (look literally anywhere else in this magazine if you need to know what the MAMA awards are). Always one to find a way to get out of writing my column, I asked this years’ MAMAnees to give me a statement for undecided voters. Surprisingly, there is very little that needs to be redacted. Also, everyone on this list is funny. I don’t want to look for a thesaurus to find synonyms. Jacob Blaeser is the only first-time MAMAnee. “Take nothing seriously, because it’s all made up and everyone is faking it...” He’s so deep... A.J. DeMello is a sunshine-y kind of guy so this is exactly what we expect from him: “I’ll be dead in a year. Vote for the other guy”. Don’t worry, Readers, I have known A.J. for like 3 years and he’s been dying in a year the whole time. Taylor Evans gave this heartfelt quote: “Vote for A.J.”. Nick Larson kept it short “Why wasn’t I nominated last year? <REDACTED> Rhoda D. Ramone is not my favorite comic on this list because I do not play favorites.

“Let me quote the lategreat Colonel Sanders, who said...”I’m too drunk to taste this chicken.’” Jason Sohm gives us this: “I don’t care I already won a Sohmie” For those who aren’t familiar, a Sohmie is an award Jason gives himself that strongly resembles a Pabst tall can and pack of smokes. Insane Wayne didn’t give me a statement, but he’s probably working, because he is a busy guy! The next 2 MAMAnees have each won before. Anthony Krayenhagen aka Anthony K. Short and simple: “I’ll be headlining the Gallo Center for the Arts November 14, 2020” Chris Teicheira has a message I think many can relate to. “Can someone give me a ride to the State Theatre? I have license issues” The last MAMA-nee is Jimmie Menezes. He is up for win number 3. Jimmie produces shows throughout the 209 including the foothills. Jimmie says: “I am proud to put smiles on the faces of a community that gets voted as ‘one of the most miserable places to live every year in national polls. If laughter is the best medicine, our area needs it most of all and I deliver in spades.” Vote for MAMA! www.modestoareamusic.com/vote

Wine tasting tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the event, available for purchase at The City of Riverbank. FIT VIEW Great Weather For Cycling By Efren Martinez

We’ve had a mild summer this year,

which in turn has steered me more to riding my bike instead of running. It’s no secret that running is one of the most high-impact and strenuous exercises you can do to your joints versus any other exercise. This is why I’ve really enjoyed cycling more last summer. Over the next two months, the weather will get even better for cycling before the freezing cold winter and rain comes into play. On October 12th The Stanislaus County Bicycle Club has their yearly Golden Hills Century. This year’s event will be starting earlier at (7:30 a.m.) for the Century and Metric Century. There will be free parking for the first 50 cars, a continental breakfast, and a new route map for easier to follow turn by turn directions, ham radio support, SAG Wagons, and a post-ride meal. Proceeds in part to help The Second Harvest Food Bank along with Safety Advocacy in Stanislaus County. If you’re a cyclist enthusiast, you know all about this event as well as where and when the local weekly rides take place. One of my personal favorite rides is the 30-mile loop to Valley Home from Modesto. It’s a great bike ride and I’m always thrilled to not only see many other cyclists on the road to and from but also who I might meet up with at one of the most popular rest stops in Valley Home; “The Valley Home Shopping Center” AKA The Valley Home General Store. All kidding aside, it’s always a cool surprise who you just might run into there as I recently did running into these two handsome cycling “Casanovas.”

With that being said, I’d also like to remind all of my cycling friends on some safety tips that I use on my own bike rides. First of all I always let my family know when I’m going for a ride and the route and I always use the road ID app on my phone. The application tracks your ride and will notify your loved ones if you’ve stopped and have not moved for more than 5 minutes. I

also use a GoPro camera. This camera mounts on top of my helmet to remind drivers that they are being recorded. It keeps us all a bit safer. As far as my cycling outfit goes I include as much neon brightness as I can wear. In fact my cycling outfit has actually been compared to a cross between a Cal Trans uniform and some of Madonna’s 1980’s video neon outfits. I am florescent! Even with all that, it’s still no guarantee that I might not fall into an accident so I always wear one of the most powerful protections in faith I have to keep me safe, my grandmothers Escapulario. ALL AGES VIEW Happy September Modesto! By Sofia Johnson

I recently had the pleasure of visiting our beautiful McHenry Museum. In the heart of downtown Modesto, stands one of the most historical structures of our city. I had the opportunity to sit down and learn about the museum from the knowledgeable and friendly docent, Jacquelyn Wooldridge. She told us all about the building’s rich history and architecture. The McHenry Museum actually began as Modesto’s first public library. Oramil McHenry willed $20,000 for this specific purpose once he had passed. The doors to this wonderful facility first opened to the public on May 1, 1912. Eventually, the modern Stanislaus County Library opened a block away, leaving the original

library building vacant. In 2003, through the efforts of local volunteers, the former library became what is now the McHenry Museum for everyone to enjoy once again. I encourage everyone to take the time to learn about all what the museum has to offer. The various exhibits have so much to learn about. From agriculture to Native American culture to the construction of the railroad, Modesto’s history is on full display. Not only does this amenity serve as enjoyment for the public, the museum can also be a resource for students. If you have a paper to write on the California Gold Rush or you want to impress your teacher with a report on the history of irrigation districts, check out the McHenry Museum. Because I have an interest in art and culture, my favorite display is of the Native American jewelry and basketwork. And you have to see the display of how a classroom looked 100 years ago! So, the next time you’re at the Saturday farmers market or looking for inspiration on your next research project, check it out, it’s free! But don’t forget that it is still local volunteers that keep the museum alive so donations are always appreciated :) The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm

DoMo Walls

Downtown Modesto continues to be an amazing place to create and showcase public art. Peer Recovery’s John Black started the run with the ‘32 Deuce Coupe at 13th and J painted by Aaron Vickery a.k.a FASM. Chris Murphy joined in and they created Classic Community Murals to celebrate Modesto’s “Classic Graffiti” history teaming again with Vickery, legendary street rod airbrusher Tom “Giant” Nye, local artist Hocus and the world renowned Ella Yates and others, creating 7 more. Murals in MoTown, began a series based on the “Pillars of Modesto”, and launched with a beautiful mural of hometown hero Royal Robbins on Camp 4 and then the beautiful “Corazon Del Valle” mural on Dewz by Francisco Franco and a series of others. The DoMo Walls International Challenge, hosted by Aaron Vickery has taken mural art to a new level. The 1st outing was created on the 100-foot wall of the Chartreuse Muse and has attracted a lot of visitors. This year, the International Challenge continues on the other side of the 10th St Alley with 7 more artists. Beginning Oct 2 – Oct 4 there will be a massive painting project with the unveiling on Saturday morning Oct 5 and a bike tour of many of the downtown murals. ModestoView has been a proud supporter of all of the mural projects in town and we believe that great public art that celebrates the good in our community will be something that attracts not only our own residents, but people from around the world. This is something that we can all do, that will move the needle on our desire to “Serve Civic Pride Daily”. We can do this in many ways.

Please check out the DoMo Walls project. www.facebook. com/events/377742126230227/ Learn more at: www.facebook.com/classiccommunitymurals www.facebook.com/muralsinmotown www.facebook.com/DoMo-Walls-344315646491545/
