Walter,Ward tie for t®p athlete BY DAVE SCHLITI'E Enquirer contributor Ifthere is such a thing as a perfect performance in track and field, both Drew Walter and Mason Ward came close to it at the state meet. In winning the Division I pole vault championship,Walter went withouta missin clearing the bar at every height to become Moellees second state track and field champion. A Colerain junior and third place finisher last year in the 1600 meters,Ward, benefitted from the disappointment and went on to easily capture the Division I title. Cincinnati's only 1999 state track and field champions,Walter ;;;id Ward are The Enquirers 03Athletes of the Year. After Moeller won the 1998 Dayton regional championship but failed to score at the Division I state meet,Crusader coach Jerry Kombrinck decided to take a different approach this season. "All along, we've talked to the kids about performing in big situations," Kombrinck said."Some of the kids were on the football team that went to the state finals two years ago and didn't win it. They wanted to do well in the big show" Moeller went on to score a school-best 19 points to finish fifth at the state meet, earning Kombrinck The Enquirer's Coach of the Year honors. Walter qualified to the state meet the previous two seasons but didn't perform well. He was determined to bring home the big prize in 1999. As a reminder, Walter printed `15-6' on his left wrist, a height that he felt it would take to win
ALL-STAR TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS
S
B®YS TRACK a the championship. As it turned out, Walter's winning vault was 15.6, tying the city record he set four weeks ago. "I knew I was going to win it," Walter said. "My wake-up call came at the district when I finished second. I then knew I wasn't invincible and any one here could beat me." Ward, Colerain's first state track champion, also was confident going into the 1600 meters. "Finishing third last year was the best thing that happened to me," Ward said. "I was a little cocky but I have been focused all season coming into the state." In a personal best time of 4:12.04,Ward wasthe easy winner. A coach who works year-round promoting cross country and track, Kombrinck predicted that the Crusaders best performance at the state meet will carry over to next season. "We have a lot of young kids and it was good for them to see the seniors come through,"Kombrink said. "I also can't say enough about Michael (Munoz). I know he's disappointed by his effort at the state meet (discus and shot put) but he has a lot to be proud ofthis season." During the season, Munoz set a city record in the discus with a throw of 178-2, the best in Division I coming into the state meet. In picking the All-Star track and field team, The Enquirer heavily weighted the performances of the athletes at the state meet, with the highest finishers earning first team honors.

Vianello's four events at state make her best BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor When Becca Vianello departed Welcome Stadium following the Division II state track meet, the Mariemont senior left with a sense of pride. A state qualifier in four events, Vianello emerged with four top eight finishes, including second place in the Division II 1600 meters. These standout performances darned Vianello The Enquirer's Track and Field Athlete. of the Year honor. One of Cincinnati's most dedicated and respected track and field coaches, Withrow's Fred Willis turned in another fine sea-. son. Building the team around seniors Tanea Green and Dante Marshall, Willis moulded the Tigers into a solid group that scored a Cincinnati-best 12 points atthe Division I state meetand an 11th place finish. This effort earned Willis The Enquirers 1999 Coach ofthe Year honors. Ina class by herself as an athlete,Vianello often showed more concern for her teammates, especially after the 3200 and 1600 meter .rclay teams qualified to state. "I want all of my teammates to run at the state meet," Vianello said following the regional meet. "They're my friends and have worked hard all year." Vianello came within a half stride of winning the 1600 meter state championship but it wasn't to be. In a race that saw two runners

,Xheeling, dealing often gas -sent teams reeling ,A Today Until 1986, baseball's trading adline long had fallen on June 15. In ;_ mory of the mid-Pine, rumors that vA to fill the sports pages, here are l ae of the most noteworthy trades the century: ► All-time best/worst trade: In :00, the New York Giants sent 246:,tr_ winner Amos Rusie to Cincinnati 0-3 Christy Mathewson. Rusie never orded another victory. Mathewson 373 wins ahead of him. > The all-time best/worst sale: i e Ruth, from the Boston Red Sox to New York Yankees in 1920, for ;5,000 cash and a $300,000 loan. > A fence for an arm: In the :!s, minor-league Baltimore acwed future Hall of Famer Lefty rve by paying off a debt for coniction of an outfield fence, owed by Martinsburg, W. Va., team. Dealing for a voice: To sign tire Hall of Fame announcer Ernie o well in the late '40s, Brooklyn GM :latch Rickey gave the minor-league I. nta Crackers catcher Cliff Dapper,

who played eight major-league games. ► All-time meat market: In 1954, the Orioles and Yankees took two weeks to complete an 18-player deal that gave New York 1958 Cy Young winner Bob Turley and World Series perfect-game pitcher Don Larsen. ► All-time recycling: In late 1959, the Yankees unloaded the fading Larsen in a seven-player trade with Kansas City that brought them a two-time MVP: Roger Maris, who later hit 61 home runs, breaking Babe Ruth's record of 60. ► Lesson learned: In 1960, Cleveland made the mistake of trading American League home run champ Rocky Colavito to Detroit for AL batting champ Harvey Kuenn: The deal forever taught baseball not to trade power for. singles. ► Ultimate Cub flub: The essence of a six-player deal between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals in 1964 was Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock. Broglio was 7-19 in three seasons with the Cubs. Brock played until 1979, amassing 3,023 hits and 938 steals.
themselves. Their 17 victories in their last 23 games, enhanced by the 9-3 road trip they just concluded, will acquire added luster with a strong effort against Cleveland. "It's really going to show us how good we are," Graves said. Graves recalled that the Reds were in last place and had lost three games in a row when the Indians visited. But the Reds won the series opener, 2-1, before Cleveland won the next two. "When they came in, all of a sudden our game changed," Graves said. "With that much on the line and the best team in baseball coming in, you're not going to give in. You're going to try your best to do whatever you can to beat them." "When you're playing the best," said Taubensee, "it brings out the best in your game." Cincinnati, one of only three major-league teams with an earned run average below 4.00 (3.92), will face a talent-laden Cleveland lineup that entered Thursday scoring 6.6 runs per game and owning a .300 team average, tops in the majors. The Indians led the AL in steals and ranked second in home runs. Cleveland's standouts include pre-
mier leadoff hitter Kenny Lofton (.343), major-league RBI leader Manny Ramirez, the multidimensional double-play combination of second baseman Roberto Alomar (.340) and Omar Vizquel(.337)and ever-dangerous sluggers Jim Thome and David Justice (.301), the Cincinnati native. "Sometimes even when they don't try to play, they still end up winning 10-2," Graves said. "They can have their 3-4-5 guys go 0-for-12, but their eighth and ninth guys are the ones doing the job. When David Justice hits seventh for somebody, I guess they're pretty good." For all the hoopla and revenues, the series has a potentially negative effect for the Reds. They're the only NL Central team that must face the Indians six times this season, including a Jacobs Field series July 7-9. Should the Reds remain in the division or wild-card race, the imbalance might make a difference. Mostly, Reds players try to ignore this inequity, just as they ignore the fact that the Indians' payroll of close to $70 million allows them to assemble a dream roster. "Hopefully we'll have some good games for the fans," Taubensee said. "That's what it's all about."

Potential area champslurk in many events BY DAVE SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor
Winning state championships hasn't.come easy for Cincinnati athletes the past 10 years, but this one could be different. Beginning ,today at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, champions will be crowned in the Division I, 11 and III track and field meets. Until this year, the state meet was at Ohio Stadium in Columbus but a recent expansion l E Project there ended the ,64-year run. In Division 1, Car- Brian Godsey son Cheek, editor of Ohio Track and Field Magazine, looks for Colerain's Mason Ward (1,600 meters),. Lakota East's Brian Godsey (3,200) and Moeller's Michael Munoz (discus and shot put) and Drew Walther(pole vault) to have a shot at titles. "Mason Ward qualified nearly' seven ' seconds faster than. anyone in Ohio and should' win it," Cheek said. "Brian Godsey is the defending state champion, and he'll be ready" despite a loss at regionals. In pole vault, Walther is the only'qualifier who has cleared 15 feet. Munoz's best chance is in the discus, though the top six finishers in 1998 are back
BOYS including defending champion Chad McAllister (Chillicothe), Brett Coffing (Mt. Vernon) and Jeff Petrulus (St. Ignatius) Defending Division I state champions David Harris (100 and 200) from Brunswick and Westerville North's Ryan Willis (110 and 300 hurdles) are expected to defend. "The 110 high hurdles should be very interesting," Cheek said."(Gary) Cutright from Walnut Hills had a 14.3, but Ryan Wilson and Lee Evans (Bedford) both went in 14.18 at the regional." Middletown's 1,600-meter relay team has the third-fastest qualifying time of 3:18.4 and will be in the hunt for the top spot. Winning a Division II individual state championship appears remote for Cincinnati athletes. Cheek gives Aaron Grant (Middletown Madison) and David Payne (Wyoming) the best shots ,in the 400 meters. 'Lockland freshman DeShawn Wynn will contend for the 100-meter championship, battling Liberty Center's Jess Smith and Jeff McCarthy and Levan Maben of Oberlein. Third last year in the 300 hurdles, Middletown,Fenwick senior Todd Heincke has a shot,to win with Emory King (Warren JFK), Dwight Carter (Columbus Bishop Hartley), Justin Gallagher (McComb) and Sam Bushing (Liberty Benton) his toughest opposition. Cheek doesn't think any a team Cincinnati team can title but he was encouraged by strong performances at the regional meet. win

Ward uses brain power Walter best • win state By KellieTaylor

Like many long dis ,ance runners, Mason Ward has dedicated himself to his sport. The Colerain High Schooljunior runs 50.60 miles per week and takes just a handful of weeks off from training a year. But Ward credits his success to another body part --- his brain. "We're all to a certain physical level, so then it comes down to who is the mentally strongest," Ward said of his competition."I think that has been my biggest attribute this season, the fact thatI'm so mentally strong." Saturday, that mental toughness helped Ward run away with the state title in the Division 11;600-meter run at Dayton's Welcome Stadium. Ward recorded a personal-best time of 4:12.04 and pulled away from his nearest competitor,Josh McAdams, with 200 meters remaining. "I like to kick where other people don't want to kick," Ward said."I went at 500 meters, and the other guy lost his gas with 200 meters left." , Ward knew very well about his competition coming into the meet. He said he researches all his competitors-through the Internet, past races and through newspaper and magazine clips. "Trying to think what they are going to think is an advantage to me," Ward said."I realize what they are going through and can predict what they are going to do next." The only other state champion from the area was Moeller pale vaulter Drew Walter. The seniox61ear eet, 6 ine es to win the Division I title. Moeller's Shawn Higgins finished fourth, and Fairfield's Adam Klotzbach finished second. "They are-seniors, and they have been morking pretty hard for four seasons," Moei 1er track coach Jerry Kombrinck said."They deserved it. "Drew went to the state meet his sophomore and junior years and didn't do so well, but this year he was determined." The pole vault was reintroduced to the Mo ller track program just five years ago after~eing discontinued decades earlier. The state title was the first by any Moeller track athlete since the early'80s, according to Kombrinck. "I feel really good about Moeller's future in track and field," Kombrinck said. The'top finisher in the girls' meet was Mariemont's Becca Vianello, second in the 1,600-meter run at a personal-best 5:09.55. c
state vaulter By James Weber Contributor Two months ago, Moeller's Drew Walter didn't know if he could contend for the Division I state title in the pole vault because of lingering effects from a 1998 car accident. When he arrived at the University of Dayton's Welcome Stadium for the state finals on June 5 he did know one thing, that it would take a clearance of 15-foot-6 to win it. Walter had the word "State" and the numbers "15-:6" written on his left hand as he competed in his third state pole vault competition. His prediction came true, as not only was that the winning height, but he was the one to clear it. He took home the state title. Walter didn't miss a vault until the very .end, when lie tried to break the state record by attempting a height of 16-fixzt-1 (the record is 16 feet). Nevertheless, the 15-6 is a Cincinnati city record. After finishing second at districts, Walter had won the regional title with a height of 15 feet, six inches better than any of the other regional champions. At state, Walter won a tense battle with Fairfield's Adam Klotzbach and Brunswick's Greg Miller. Klotzbach cleared a personal best 15 feet to challenge Walter, but could not clear 15-foot-3.' Miller` passed at 15-0, and when he railed in his final attempt at 15-3, Walter raised his arms in celebra-
tion. "I felt 1 was going to win, pretty much," he said. "That was the most nerve-wracking part of it, when there were three guys left. I was sure one of those guys would hit 15." Last year, Walter was in a car accident the week of the Greater Catholic League championships. Injuries from the accident lingered through the 1998 postseason and into 1999, and Walter performed vault after vault over the winter to gear up for his final track season. Even then, he struggled until after spring break, when he cleared 14foot-6 to build his confidence. Now, Walter will focus on competing collegiately at Miami University in Oxford, where he will pole vault! Walter's teammate Shawn Higgins, also a sbnjor, finished fourth at state with a height of 14-foot-6, a career best and iix inches higher than his third-place performance at regionals. "It's so great that he finished fourth," Walter'said. "We've been together for four years on varsity. I'm happier for him than I am for me." Moeller's Mike Munoz finished fifth in the Division I shot put, earning a spot on the medal stand with a throw of 56-foot-9, just two feet short of second place. He moved up a spot in- the standings with his final throw. Throwing the discus at state for the second year in a row, Munoz, finished 10th with a distance of 162foot-4 and narrowly missed making it to the state finals. With the three medals, Moeller finished fifth as a team with 19 points. The Crusaders weren't the only local highlight, as several athletes in the Suburban Life coverage area competed at state last week, staking home several medals and posting many strong performances.

at regional BY JOHN SCHUTTE Enquirer contributor Division I Cincinnati boys dominated the Dayton Regional track meet Saturday afternoon at Welcome Stadium. From area schools, 26 individuals and four relay teams qualified Saturday for a spot in the state track meet next weekend at Welcome Stadium. 0- 1600 run: Even a battle with strep throat wasn't enough
BOYS TRACK to slow down Colerain's Mason Ward. . Ward was struck with the sicknesson Thursday and stayed home-from school on Friday. A shot of antibiotics from his doctor seemed to clear up the problem and Ward looked strong winning the race. The junior deviated from his normal strategy and went straight for the lead and held it the entire race. "I ran a stupid race, but it is
fun to experiment and still win," Ward said, "I won't go for the lead next week." Ward opened a comfortable lead in the first 800 meters and held off Lakota East's Jerry Claunch. "I'm not the type of guy that runs well on my own, I thrive on the' competition," Ward said. Cincinnati swept the event, claiming all four qualifying spots. Brian Godsey (Lakota East) and Jamie Obermeyer (Glen Este) rounded out the top four. ► 110 hurdles: Finishing second in the preliminaries may
have been a blessing in disguise for Walnut Hills senior Gary Cutright. "I haven't raced against this kind of competition all year, getting beat in the prelims was an eye opener," Cutright said. Cutright's only losses in the 110 high hurdles this year have been the Colerain Invitational and the preliminaries. ► 100 and 200 dash: Roger Bacon's Brandon Barnes captured both events. Barnes edged out Middletown's Antwaun Rogers at the wire to win the 100. "I had a feeling I won based

on my lean at the end," Barnes said, "I'm just thankful to qualify for state." Barnes was an easier winner in the 200. After a good start, he pulled away to win by half a second. "I hope I do'',well at state, last year my excitement turned to fear and I didn't do very well." ► Shot put: A second place finish in the discus Thursday made Moeller junior Michael Munoz more determined to win I ire `s~iot put. Munoz had a throw of 58 feeiahTsix inches to win the
regional. "This will be my third trip to state," Munoz said, "I just want to relax ancThave fun and not get overwhelmed." . Brady Morris (Harrison) and Geoffrey Ziegler (La Salle) finished second and third to qualify. Cincinnati Country Day's Trey Wright won the Division III shot put with a hurl of 52 feet, 5 inches. Like Munoz, Wright will be making his third trip to state after placing second in the region in 1997 and 98. ► 300 hurdles:
After finishing second in the both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles in the 1998 regional, Middletown Fenwick's Todd Heinecke felt it was his turn to win. Heinecke finished second in the high`hurdles but rebounded to take an easy victory in the 300 hurdles. "I fell behind early, that's the first time this year I had to come from behind," Heinecke said. "I knew I would win when I hit the turn."

for top athlete BY DAB SCHME, r Enquirer contributor x~ 't If there is such a thing as a perfect performance in track and field, both Drew Walter and Mason Ward came close to it at the state meet. In winning the Division I pole vault championship,Walter went Without a miss in clearing the bar at every height to become. Moeller's second state track and field champion. A Colerain junior and third place finisher last year in the 1600 meters,Ward, benefitted from the disappointment and went on to easily capture the Division I title. Cincinnati's only 1999 state track and field champions,Walter and Ward are ne Enquirer's CoAthletes of the Year. After Moeller ,won the 1998 Dayton regional championship but failed to score at the Division I state meet,Crusader coach Jerry Kombrinek decided to lake a different approach this season. "All along, we've talked to the kids about performing in big situations," Kombrinck said:"Some of the kids were on the football team that went to the state finals two years ago and didn't win it. They wanted to do well in the big show." Moeller went on to score a sc ool- est 19 points to finish fifth at the state meet, earning Kombrinck Ae Enquirer's Coach of the Year honors. Walter qualified to the state meet the previous two seasons but didn't perform well. He was determined to bring home the big prize in 1999. As a reminder, Walter printed '15-6' on his left wrist, a height that he felt it would take to win
the championship. As it turned out, Walter's winning vault was 15-6, tying the city record he set four weeks ago. "I knew I was going to win it," Walter said. "My wake-tip call came at the district when I finished second. I then knew I wasn't invincible and any one here could beat me." Ward, Colerain's first state track champion, also was confident going into the 10)meters. "Finishing third'last year was the best thing that happened to me," Ward said. "I was a little cocky but I have been focused all season coming into the state." In a personal best time. of 4:12.04,Ward was the easy winner. A coach who works year-round promoting cross country and track, Kombrinck predicted that the Crusaders best performance at the state meet will carry over to next season.
'We have a lot of yourig kids and it was good for them to see the seniors come through," Kona= brihck said. "I also can't say enough about Michael (ML 110Z). I know lie's disappointed by his effort at the state rneet (discus and shot put) but he has a lot to be proud ofthis season."
During the season, Munoz set a city record in the discuswits a throw of 178-2, the best in Division I coming into the state meet. In picking the All-Star track and field team, The Enquirer heavily weighted the performances of die athletes at the state meet, with the highest finishers earning first team honors.

From Page 1B There is no favorite on either side, though there are a number of contenders. 'On the boys' side, La Salle, the only Cincinnati team to win a Division I team title (1994) in,40 years, has won seven straight GCL meets and six consecutive coaches' poll titles. Health concerns, including foot injuries to junior distance runner Steve Padgett (third at state in cross country, has run a 9:20 indoor 3,200 me-, ters, out indefinitely) and senior Derrick Butler (state qualifier 3,200 last season), has Lanc:ers coach Frank Russo frustrated. But with 13 seniors, including high jumper Steve Esterkamp (6-8) and Dennis Fieglein (sprints and long jump) returning, La Salle will be near the top again. The expectation in our program is to win," said Russo. Russo's brother Ron coaches at Colerain h and has the Cardinals in a position to knock La Salle off the top. Junior Mason Ward finished third in the 1,600 meters at state last season in a school-record 4:15.42. Sophomore Blake Hill, a transfer from Mount Healthy, ,was a regional meet qualifier in the discus. Seniors B.J. Askew (300 low hurdles) and Shawn Vandiver (100, 200, long jump) add strength in the sprints, giving Ron Russo reason for optimism. "We'll be a little down in the pole vault and 110 high hurdles," he said,"but in every other event, we will score." ixoeller lacks overall depth, but has top in-4 divi ua s not only in Walter but junior Mike Munoz (shot put, discus), Jon Qualls (shot, discus), and Tennell Bryant (sprints). St. Xavier, which won the Division I state cross country title in the fall, will be strong in the distance events and relays but will lack experience. Princeton, a long-time power in track, will have to rely on the sprints and jumps for its points.

BY DAVE SCffifM Z Enquirer contributor Lakota East distance runner Brian Godsey has had plenty of success the past three years. Besides securing a "scholarship from Miami, Godsey has claimed 1998 individual state championships in cross country and track. Now Godsey,Cincinnati's only returning state track champion, seeks to become the school dis> triefs all-time winner. of gold medals. Theresa Hawkins is tied'with Godsey for the most state titles. She won back-to-back state shot put championships in 1979 and '80 at Lakota before the school was splitinto East and West. "There's still plenty to shoot for this season," Godsey said. "The state record is 8:57 in the . 3,200 and I'd like to break it." Lakota Eastcoach Jason Lindsey has no doubts Godsey will be well-prepared. J "Brian came in ready to run r..•,. this season," Lindsey said."He had some nice indoor races and - is getting faster every race." The competition in the 3,200 will be tough with Clayton Northanont's Joe Barnes (second last ear), Steve Padgett from La Salle, Mason Ward from Col~• erain and Columbus Eastmoor's ..Abraham Habte. "I took three weeks off after the national cross country meet in December," Godsey said. 'J ran almost everyday starting in i. January and probably logged between 600 and 700 miles." Here's a look at the area's top z 10teams voted by the coaches. 1. La Salle: "Team of the 90S » That tag has been pinned on the six-time defending boys poll champion Lancers, ranked first in a vote that points to parity for this season. Only eight of the 20 coaches voted for La Salle. Nine of the top 10 teams received at least one first-place vote. ' The Big Red Express has its most talented senior class since

1995,"La Salle coach Frank Russo said. The Big Red Machine, Steve Padgett, had the seventh fastest indoor.time in the 3,200 meters." Besides Padgett, the Lancers also return Dennis Fieglein (sprinter, long jump), Steve Esterkamp (high jump), Geoff Ziegler (shot put) and Derrick Butler(1600,3200). Nala Voeun, a transfer from Mount Healthy; gives the Lancers a standout 400 and 800 meter runner, with Roger Bacon transfer Christian Beck expected to handle the high hurdles and 400 meters. 2.St Xavier: A team loaded with 21 seniors, the Bomberswill be strong in the distance races, improved in the sprints and competitive in the field events. Besides Reade Kidd and Danny Fritz in the 1;600 and 3,200 meters, St. X 'has depth with Andy Weitmarschen, Matt Hils, Pete Mosher and Joe O'Brien. The sprints and hurdles have been weaknesses in the past but not this season with Paul Kuhns, Michael Larkin, Kevin Hurley, Donald Jones and Dave Meyer threats in every race. 3. Colerain: Coach Ron Russo will build the team around returning state placer Mason Ward and the state qualifying 3200 meter relay team of Ward, Justin Hussei,Chris Noelcke and Ryan Nickson. "We will also be strong in the weights," Russo said."Ticejumps could be the surprise ofthe team.
