East·West all·star gives lifelong memories to locals '--2,-o,, By Kyle Burch Community Press Staff Writer

ONCINNATI - Madeira senior Jeff Moore has received his share of athletic accolades in his four years as part of the Mustangs athletic program. While most of those have come on the hardwood as a member of the Madeira basketball team, the recognition he received after being named to the East all-star baseball squad is going to be hard to top. Moore was one of the 30 players selected for inclusion on the East team, in the 2006 Great American East-West All Star Baseball Series. That series concluded June 14 with a 7-3WestwinatGreatAmerican Ballpark. "Basketball is always going to be my main sport, but it was great to get the honor of playing in these games," Moore said. "Getting on that field, with all of those other great players, that was big time. n Moore was selected to the squad after hitting .345 with six doubles and 25 RBI this past sea-

son. The series was cut short because of bad weather after game one was stopped in the fifth inning and game two never even began. The series finale at Great Amer, ican Ballpark went off with a hitch, providing those playing in it a memory that will stick with them for a long time. Moore, who is planning on playing both basketball and baseball at UC-Qermont, started the game at shortstop for the East squad, but was unable to get an atbat in the Joss. Deer Park senior Johnny McHone also took part in the series after hitting .337 with six doubles and 15 RBI for the Wildcats this season. It didn't take long for McHone to realize the scope of the situation upon walking on the field. "Itwas awesome. As soon as we walked out on the field I knew that this was going to be something I'd remember for the rest of my life," McHone said.

Moeller's Jason Cisper was the Crusaders lone representative In tHe 2006 Great American East· West All Star Baseball Series. •

McHone played two innings at shortstop for the East squad and was hit by a pitch in his only at-bat ofthegame. While he isn't playing baseball in college next fall, McHone says he couldn't think of a better way to finish his playing career. "It's a great way to end it," he said. Moeller senior Jason Cisper also finished his high school career by playing in the all star series. Cisper, who will be playing at Miami University in Oxford next fall, was selected to the team after hitting .377 with five doubles and seven stolen bases for the Cru-

saders. • Being the versatile player he t;. Cisper played in the outfield during the second inning and took tlie mound to pitch for the East sqmfd in the sixth. : The enjoyment of the game was highlighted by a Reds wib, which preceded the all-star seri~ finale. "It was pretty cool to be dOWn. there," Cisper said. "We were up in the stands watching Adam Dunn hit a walkoff home run to win the game and then an hour later we were p!aying on the same field.:: kburch@communitypress.~;~m

Moeller uses walk as fuel in big inning Intentional pass sets up 7-run outburst By Jeff Wallner Enquirer contributor

Everyone agreed that Glen Este coach John Hatfield was making the right decision when he chose to intentionally walk Moeller's Alex Willuners to load the bases with one out in the fifth inning. "We were trying to get the double play," Hatfield said. "The game was still relatively close. We put him on, and they made us pay for it.'' Crusaders senior inett

Panthers still a power /-"-('¡!DC.

~ By Mark Schmelzer Enquirer contributor

Elder coach Mark Thompson's ~ction to his defending Division I state champion Panthers earning the top spot in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll was typical. "Dam," he said. "It's flattering that the other coaches think that highly of us, but it doesn't mean a thing. Our goal is to win the last game of the season. It'll be a feather in our cap, if we're still there." Thompson might have to deal with the loss for the season of left fielder Marty Kersting. The firstteam Greater Catholic League allstar suffered a possible tom labrum in his shoulder during the Panthers' Division I basketball regional championship loss March 18. 'We have three or four guys we can plug in there," Thompson said. "One thing that's fortunate is we do have a lot of depth, but you can't re-

place him." 2. MOEU.m: The Crusaders have five seniors but need their pitchers to step up and replace Eric Surkamp, whose 19-1 career record ineluded last season's 8-1 perlonnance. 3. ST. XAVIER: Enquirer first-team all-star outfielder Brad Brookbank hit .394 and stole 12 bases in 13 tries last season. 4. HAMILTON: Senior Brandon Bouley and junior Justin Schultheiss, both 3-0 last season, lead a deep pitching staff. 'We can go about six deep and not get hurt too bad," coach Dan Bowling said. "We don't have a lot of power, but I think we'll score a lot of runs." 5. PRINCE'ION: Craig Baker returns to the VIkings' pitching staff after missing last season's run to the state final four with a knee injury. Matt Weber, who started and left Princeton's state semifinal with a lead after six innings, also is back.

They are counting on Buckeye Division first-team pitcher Josh Godfrey and secondteam shortstop Steve Adams. 7. lA SAll.E: Frrst-team all-GCL first baseman Tyler Sheehan returns. Bobinski pitches Crusaders to win By Mark Schmetzer Enquirer contributor

Moeller's Brian Bobinski couldn't have picked a better time to pitch his best game of the season -at least to this point, anyway. The junior right-hander allowed three hits and one run in 5;.'; innings and got effective relief from classmate Alex Wunmers to help the Crusaders stay alive in the Greater Catholic League South Division race with a 4-1 win over La Salle at Crosley Field at the Blue Ash Sports Complex Wednesday. '1'his keeps us in s:ride in the (GCLS)," said Bobinski (4-1). "If we wanted to have any hope of winning the (GCLS), we had to win today," added coach Mike Cameron. "We control our own destiny, and that's where you want to be." Moeller (12-5), the No.4 team in The Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, is ~2 in the GCLS. To~ranked Elder is 9-1 after defeating No.9 St Xavier 7-5 Wednesday. The third-ranked Lancers are 11-4 overall, 7-2 in the GCL "The GCL is tough," said La Salle coach Pat O'Connor, whose team is scheduled to play St Xavier Friday and at Elder Monday. Elder is scheduled to play at Moeller Friday and the Crusaders travel to St. Xavier Monday. Games against GCL ~orth Division teams also count in the standings. Moeller still must play Purcell Marian and Roger Bacon. Bobinski limited the middle third of La Salle's batting order to a combined 0-for-7 with two walks. "That was probably the best game I've pitched all year," he said. '1'his has been kind of an off year forme." Here are spring things to consider atching up with spring happenings, ·while still catching our breath from the winter season: • If there is an Ohio baseball · team better than Elder, we haven't seen it yet. The reigning Division I state champion Panthers at this writing are 11-0 this year and 39-1 over the past two seasons,· and ranked No. 25 nationally by SchoolSports magazine. Coach .--=--, Mark Thompson said assistant coaches Phil Brown and Tony Hesketh deserve kudos. Brown has had three sons play at Elder. "I know we would not Tom have had the success we've had without Groeschen Phil's efforts," Thompson said. • Rob Heise, girls' basketball coach at McNicholas, is now interim athletic director at the school Dave Boettger, the longtime McNick AD, stepped down last week. Heise might become the full-time AD next season but hopes to keep coaching his hoop team. McNick was 20-4 last season, and Heise's eight-year head coaching career includes a D-II state title in 2001. • The Castner brothers are a force, as usual, as softball head coaches. Keith (Lakota West) has the area's No. 1-ranked Division I team, Brian (Mason) has the No. 4 team, and Steve (Lakota East) is just outside the Enquirer top 10. Lakota West is ranked No. 25 nationally by Student Sports magazine. • The Wmton Woods boys' track team is. excelling despite not having a track. The Warriors' strong spring includes a recent victory at the FAVC Relays. Troy Everhart, theWmton Woods football coach, says track coaches Ron Wright and Tony Boyd are doing "an incredible job." Says Everhart, 'The kids are running around the parking lot, and boarding a bus two days a week to use Fairfield's track." •Joe and John Hoard, senior twins and mainstays on the Elder tennis team, are sons of former FOX19 sports anchor Greg Hoard. Greg Hoard also is a former Enquirer and Post sports reporter. • Jason Cis~r, Moeller senior base6lm oG:tli'eta'ei"/pitcher, is featured on the cover of SchoolSports magazine for April. Cisper, signed with Miami University for next year, is ambidextrous but mainly plays left-handed for the Crusaders. He is hitting .387 with a 1-0

Young team finishes second in city after loss to Elder By Kyle Burch Community Press Staff Writer

KENWOOD- Most of the time when a coach describes a teain as being young the description brings with it an undertone of that team not having success. That wasn't the case for the 2006 Moeller baseball team. Beginning the 2006 season, head coach Mike Cameron labeled his team as very young and hoped that they could mature enough to be playing well heading into postseason play. Well, the Crusaders postseason play concluded last week, but only after Moeller posted a 23-6 record during the regular season and finished second in the city's Division I poll. The one obstacle the "young" Crusaders team couldn't overcome was the Elder Panthers, who knocked off Moeller 8-1 in the regional semifinals. 'We didn't do a very good job of figuring out (Mike) Nastold," said Cameron, of the Elder pitcher. "He beat us 1-0 during the regular season and once again we couldn't figure him out." The defeat was the third this season suffered at the hands of Elder, and despite the seven-run difference the game was much closer. Moeller trailed by just three runs before the Panthers struck for four runs in the top 'Of the seventh

inning. So with the loss, Cameron and the Crusaders will take the year of success and turn it into a valuable learning tool for the younger players on the team. · "We were hoping that come ·.tournament time we would end up being a pretty good team," Cameron said. Moeller uses walk as fuel in big inning .

Intentional pass sets up 7-run outburst By Jeff WaHner Enquirer contributor

Everyone agreed that Glen Este coach John Hatfield was making the right decision when he chose to intentionally walk Moeller's Alex Wimmers to load the bases with one out in the fifth inning. "We were trying to get the double play," Hatfield said. "The game was still relatively close. We put him on, and they made us pay for it." Crusaders senior Bryan Robinett followed with a grand-slam . home run on the first pitch from Trojans starter Jared Jones that gave Moeller a 9-0 victory in a sectional final game played Saturday at Midland. The Crusaders, ranked No.2 in The Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, advance to the district final against Monday's Colerain-Oak Hills winner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Midland. Wllllmers pitched seven hmings allowing just three hits, walked one and struck out 10. 'This is two starts in a row that he's been dominant," said Moeller coach Mike Cameron. "His command of his pitches was outstanding today." The Crusaders were leading 3-0 with runners on second and third and one out in the fifth inning when Jones fell behind 2-0 to Wllllffiers. Hatfield chose to intentionally walk the Moeller junior and pitch to Robinett. "I was looking for a fastball," Robinett said. "I thought it was just a long fly ball at first. I just wanted a sacrifice fly, but it kept carrying." Glen Este committed three errors, including one that helped jump start Moeller's seven-run fifth inning. Chris Baltes reach based on a throwing error with one out. Jason

Cisper followed with a single to left. Tom Belza's RBI double scored Baltes and put runners on second and third. That set up the walk to Wllllffiers and Robinett's smash. "It was a good baseball decision to walk him," said Cameron. "Wimmers is a big RBI guy for us. The decision made baseball sense. Naturally, they would like to take it back." Moeller sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. 'The wheels just fell off for us defensively," Hatfield said. "Gones) deserved a much better fate than that." Jones pitched 4~ innings for the Trojans, allowing nine runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out three. Aggressive baserunning helped the Crusaders break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Belza reached on an infield single. Robinett was hit by a pitch. Moeller attempted a double-steal and catcher Dan Gregory's throw sailed past third base into left field¡ allowing Belza to score Moeller's first run. Robinett scored on a ground out to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Wimmers began the gaine with three straight strikeouts and retired the first eight batters he faced. 'We just couldn't get anything going offensively," said Hatfield. 'That's the best game thrown at us this season." Junior Joey Mack's double in the third inning was the only extra-base hit for Glen Este. "I felt real strong and well-rested," Wimmers said. "I knew it was a big game. I just wanted to hit my spots and keep them off balance."

Elder and Moeller finished 1-2 in the final Enquirer Division I coaches' poll of the regular season. Elder was ranked No. 2 and Moeller No. 10 in the final state pol;. "We thought we were the two best teams all year," Elder coach Mark Thompson said. "It should be a great game, but I'm not looking forward to playing them agam." Elder probably will throw wphomore right-hander Mike Nastold against Moeller, Thompson said. Nastold (7-0) went four innings to .{et the win Saturday. He struck out eight and allowed four hits, and senior right-hander Matt Klausing finished with three hitless innings to get a save. Nastold allowed all three runs Saturday, but only one run was earned, as two Elder-errors helped 'Jsher in North's first two runs. The hard-throwing Nastold was clocked as high as 91 mph on the ndargun. North (23-5), ranked No. 9 in the state, admittedly had not faced a team of Elder's caliber. Fishburn drove in two runs in fue fourth, while Marty Kersting !sacrifice flY), Quinn Currin (single), Pat Williams (sacrifice fly), Ben Wtlliams (single) and Tim Tepe (double) each knocked in a

Surkamp allowed four runs in four innings, allowing two-run homers to Leesman and Chris Fishbum. He entered the game with a 1.32 ERA. "I've had better days," Surkamp said. With Surkamp out, Elder poured it on. The Panthers went up 9-1 through six innings, including another home run (solo) by Ben Wittwer. Moeller scored three runs against Elder reliever Robb Thompson in the seventh inning, but the Panthers were never in serious trouble.
