The finest group of Varsity runners to walk through Moeller's doors enjoyed one of the most remarkable seasons ever! A season that will be remembered by the smashing records. Eight of our finest ran a Sk under 17 minutes; and three--Luke Beurelein, Sam Sharp, and Brad Babiak each broke 16 minutes. Phenomenal! At nearly every Meet, Moeller took home a 2nd place trophy-earning the Varsity its highest ranking ever at 5th in the State polls and in the final poll we ranked 6th. However the most extraordinary part of the season was the close-knit family that was formed in team spirit. Each week prayer services were held, praying for special intentions and offering a decade of the rosary. And in addition pasta dinners were enjoyed each week. This season was especially important four our seniors. The Moeller Cross Country team embodied many things this year, most importantly: a family.

Local powerhouses dominate at district meet By John Schutte The Cincinnati Enquirer
The heavyweights of cross country squared off Saturday afternoon at the district meet at Voice of America Park in West Chester. Four of the top six boys teams in the state competed in two races. Kings, ranked No. 4 in the state, downed No.3 La Salle 45-58 in the "B"race. Tony Matheus of Kings ran a 15:53 to win the race. Matheus has won all but two races this season. "I didn't do well last year in cross country. I continued to struggle during the track season. I kept getting sick," Matheus said. "I wasn't
satisfied with how I was running, so I rededicated myself in the offseason." Matheus was one of 10 Kings rui).ners to join coach Jim Brant's mileage club over the summer. 'The kids had to run 500 miles to make the club," Brant said. "We had a disappointing season last year. The kids decided to work hard and put it together this season." La Salle coach Frank Russo was disgtisted with his team's secondplace performance. "We choked today just like we did last week at the GCL meet," Russo said. 'Two miles into the race, we had it won. The last mile
comes down to guts and courage. We ran with none today." St. Xavier, fresh off an upset victory over La Salle at the GCL meet last weekend, captured a lOth consecutive district title in the "A" race. The Bombers, ranked No. 2 in the state, beat No. 6 Moeller 4559. 'This race wasn't as dynamic as the GCL meet. We wanted to run competitively but save something for next week," St. Xavier coach Larry Merkel said. The top four boys teams and top five girls teams in each race advance to the regional meet Saturday at Troy. The top 16 boys and top 20 girls not on a qualified team
also make regionals as individuals. Merkel is confident his team can make it to a 17th straight state meet if his runners stay healthy and relaxed. Moeller's Luke Beuerlein won the race in 15:55. Tommy Balmat and Josh Walters finished third and fourth to lead the Bombers. 'This is only the third race of the season for Josh. He suffered a stress fracture in track last season, and it's been slow to heal," Merkel said. "He finished third at the Strongsville Invitational and third at the GCL, and I don't know if the leg is completely healed." The Colerain and Turpin girls each won their respective races.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in the state, beat Ursuline 37-58 for their first district title since 2000. "We are loaded this year. We are ready to make a run at the state title," Colerain coach Ron Russo said. "We've worked hard to gain the No. 1 ranking in the state, and we fully expect to win." Winton Woods posted its best district meet in school history. The Warriors advanced two girls and two boys to the regional. Freshman Lauren Beachy placed fifth (19:07) and Ashlee Young finished 19th. Brad Bullock became a two-time regional qualifier with a ninth-place finish. Freshman Michael Perry finished lOth.
