Griffey scored on a 4-yard run around the left end. This made the score 14-7 in the middle of the third quarter. On Moeller's next possession, Adam Hyzdu attempted a 39-yard field goal, but hit the left upright and the ball bounced out. Griffey scored again late in the fourth quarter on another 4-yard run, but it just wasn't enough to put the Crusaders ahead. The final score ended up 24-14. Defensively, the Crusaders played their hearts out. They were faced with a tough challenge, for Elder had many great offensive players. They forced two interceptions, one by linebacker Jeff Crable, and another by Kevin Henderson, who returned it to Elder 1 s 9-yard line which set up Griffey's touchdown. The defense

Crusaders are back in the playoffs On Friday night, November 4, the Moeller Crusaders took on the previously undefeated Princeton Vikings. The Crusaders needed a win in order to secure a spot in the Playoffs, and they got it. They beat the Vikings by a score of 21-14 at U. c. 's Nippert Stadium in front of over 12,000 fans. Moeller's passing offense was a maior factor contributing to the win. Before halftime, the Crusaders threw only short passes. Then after the half, they went to a long pass which confused the Viking defense and allowed Moeller to move the ball. Quarterback Casey Fisher threw 30 times with 18 completions and 221 yards. Joe Toepfer was his main
target. He caught 6 passes for 69 yards, one being a 22-yard touchdown throw. Fisher also hit Chris Asbrock for two consecutive gains of 34 yards and 21 yards which set up Moeller's first touchdown of the second half. Craig Griffey was the key to Moeller's rushing success. After being ineligible for the first nine games, he came out and scored two touchdowns. Mike Olexa also ran the ball well, carrying the ball 14 times with an average of 4.9 yards per carry. Moeller's offense turned in a total of 321 yards on the night. The Moeller defense played a tremendous game. They held the Vikings to a total of only 156 yards, 69 passing and 87 rushing.

The defense was led by linebacker Mike Nichols who had 21 tackle points. Moeller was able to stop Princeton's offense because they were able to stop the passing game. Tackles Jim Perry and Andy Folzenlogen along with ends Mike Schiess and Eric Schneider put constant pressure on Princeton's quarterback, allowing him little time to throw. They forced two interceptions. One by John Walker, the other by Kevin Henderson who returned it for a 34-yard gain. The defense was highlighted with a goal line stand in the middle of the third quarter. It set the stage for the rest of the game. Reserves finish with 9th ZIP The Moeller Crusader's Reserve Team improved their record to 9-1 by defeating Princeton Saturday, 21-0. The Defense extablished their Zips as the most in Reserve history with 9. They had only one team score against them and that was Elder scoring 14. Proving true what Coach Schira said in the beginning of the year, that if we are scored upon, we will 99% of the time lose. He was only wrong by 1%, proving this year that the only time we lost. we were scored upon. Great standouts this game for the defense were Chris Ryals, Chris Woycke with 2 interceptions, and Tom Blatz. The
offense
had a little
help with the added addition of Carlos Collins who added 2 touchtowns. Moeller's offense was dominating 95% of the time, ending drives only because of fundamental mistakes. This game was an excellent game for both sides of the ball and a momentum builder for the .. 89 .. season. The Reserve Crusaders would like to thank the coaching staff, consisting of Head Coach Tim Schira, Assistant Coaches Bob Paola, Randy Fath and John Gallagher. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Connie Boehner and the Reserve Cheerleaders for their excellent support, we did appreciate it. Thanks!

Parents' night successful On Friday night, October 28, the Moeller Crusaders defeated Dayton Dunbar by a score of 49-8. Quarterback Casey Fisher led the team and set a school record with 22 passes and 16 completions for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Quarterback Adam Hyzdu also threw a touchdown pass. Excellent pass protection by the offensive line contributed to the great success of Moeller's passing game. All

Olexa caught 3 passes for 72 yards, Stofko caught 4 for 66 yards. Junior Mike Beerman was also on the receiving end of a 38-yard touchdown pass thrown by Hyzdu. Thank you Parents! Friday night, October 28, was Parent's Night. It was a very emotional night for the Moeller family. The Players, Managers, and Cheerleaders got a chance to thank their parents for all they have done for them over the years. Being a player myself, I can truly say that the parents deserve it. They do so much for us, from doing all our dirty laundry and driving us back and forth to practice, to cooking late dinners and always being their to cheer us up or help us out when we are down. The night started out at 4:30 PM in the gym. All of the parents were invited to join and watch our traditional pre-game activities. They observed as we made our final preparations for the upcoming game. After our little walk through practice, everyone moved into the Chapel for Benediction and silent prayer. They then proceeded to follow us into the locker room. They listened in as each coach
I
gave a little talk and expressed their thanks and attitudes towards the games. Finally, everyone gathered around the statue of Uary and said one last prayer before loading the busses. Once arriving at Galbreath Field, the Crusaders went through their warm-up exercises. Then just before the game started, each player was introduced with his parents. The mothers received a flower and the fathers received a banner. The Cheerleaders, Managers and Coaches' Wives were introduced as we 11. It was a special moment for everyone involved. After the game, everyone was invited back to Moeller's cafeteria for a big celebration in honor of the parents. They do so much for us, it is only right that we show our appreciateion to them. Without them, everything we have accomplished would have been impossible. Thanks again, Parents, you really deserve it! by Mike Rohlfs

Moe's offense explodes for 4 2 On Friday night, October 21, the Moeller Crusaders rebounded after a tough loss to the Elder Panthers to beat the LaSalle Lancers by a score of 42-6 and improve their overall record to 7-1.
The Crusader defense started off the game. After a few short plays, they turned the ball over to the offense with an interception by John Walker. The Crusader offense proceeded to drive the ball steadily down the field for a touchdown. The score was set up by a long pass from quarterback Casey Fisher to wide receiver Greg Stofko. Junior Mike Eutsey then ran the ball in for the score from the two-yard line. The Crusaders missed the extra point attempt.
After the kickoff, the Moeller defense once again stuffed the Lancer offense. They forced the Lancers to punt after three short plays, and gave the offense excellent field position. The Moe offense scored once again, with the help of a Lancer penalty, on a 34-yard pass completion from Fisher to Joe Toepfer. The defense stopped the Lancer offense one more time to end the first quarter. Moeller drove the ball just as well the second quarter as they did the first. Mike Olexa, after having several great runs, scored for Moeller's third touchdown of the game. Great blocking from a strong offensive line made these runs possible. The Crusaders were successful with the twopoint conversion attempt, making the score 21-0.

BEST DEFENSIVE LINEMAN The Crusaders went on to score once more before the end of the half. This time, it was a pass from Fisher to Chris Jenkins who was wide open in the middle of the field. He caught the ball and ran it in for a touchdown. The score at the end of the first half was 28-0.
Offensively, the Crusaders totally shut down the LaSalle offense. They allowed only 84 yards rushing and 87 yards passing. Offensively, the Crusaders racked up a total of 457 yards. Fisher threw for a total of 284 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Moeller started off strong again_ in the third quarter. They scored after just three plays on a deep pass from Fisher to Toepfer. The Moeller defense continued to refuse LaSalle the opportunity to drive the ball. Moeller scored one more time on a quick run around the outside by Carlos Collins. The score. at this point, was 42-0. Moeller's second team squad got a chance to play the remainer of the game. The game ended with a final score of 42-6.
Next week, the Crusaders play Dayton Dunbar at Galbreath Field at 8:00 PM. This game is Parents' night. All Senior Parents are invited to Moeller's pre-game activities which start at 4:00 PM in the gym. by Mike Rohlfs

Reserves down LaSalle 22-0 The Moeller Crusaders came back from an absolutely stunning defeat against Elder last week. With all the adversity the Reserves faced. they proved they had heart and integrity by defeating LaSalle 22-0. The Moeller Crusader's defense was tough shutting down a very good LaSalle offense. LaSalle's QB being noted as one of the finest in the GCL was shut down rather easily. The Moe defense turned in its seventh zip with fine play by all of the squad. but exceptional plays by Todd Costello and Pat Griffis with interceptions. The offense was definitely in sync Saturday scoring 22 points. Touchdowns were turned in by Adam Adkins
with two. one for 4 yards and another for 11 yards and Steve Larkin with a 2-yard run. Neil Dougherty was virtually unstoppable in the air. and showed some fine running ability. Neil's big target was Joe McCollough grabbing two exceptional passes for over 40 yards. The Moeller Reserves will not play this Saturday because of a lack of a Dayton Dunbar reserve team. but will conclude their season against Princeton. In the meanwhile. we will get the Varsity ready for Dayton Dunbar. by Pete Hopewell

GCL thriller goes to Elder o.
The Moeller Crusaders. after putting up a tremendous fight, lost to the Elder Panthers last Friday night in a very close game by a score of 36-33. The two teams were almost evenly matched, both offensively and defensively. However, the Panthers took advantage of their breaks more than the Crusaders did.
The Moeller defense was able to shut down the Panther offense in the first quarter. The Crusader offense scored their second touchdown with 1:00 left in the first quarter. Mike Eutsey ran the ball hard behind a strong offensive line right into the end zone. Hyzdu again scored the extra point.
When the game started out. it looked as if the Crusaders were going to have an easy victory. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 14-0. The Crusaders started out on their own 24-yard line and drove the ball all the way down the field for a score. Chris Asbrock caught the touchdown pass which was thrown by Quarterback Casey Fisher. Adam Hyzdu kicked the extra point, making the score 7-
The Panthers came back to dominate the second quarter in the same way the Crusaders did the first quarter. They scored twice, making the score a tie, 14 all, at the half. To start the second half. the Moeller defense forced a fumble. End Mike Schiess hit the Panther quarterback, knocking the ball loose. Jeff Crable recovered it. The offense capitalized on this

opportunity. Uike Olexa scored on a 7-yard run, breaking numerous tackles. Hyzdu had the extra point. 'The Panthers quickly retaliated with a couple scores of their own. The score was then 28-21. However, the Crusaders weren't down for long. They scored two straight touchddowns. both on passes from Fisher to wide receiver Joe Toepfer. With 4 minutes left in the game, the Panthers scored once again and made a two point conversion. The score was 36-33 and the Panthers just ran the clod< away. It was a hard loss for the Crusaders. It was their first GCL loss in 16 years. The Crusaders had many chances for interceptions which would have won them the game. However, it just wasn't their night. The Crusaders are itching for a chance to replay the Panthers in the State Playoffs. In order to do this, they must first win their next three games against LaSalle, Dayton Dunbar and Princeton, respectively.

Moe's next possession was quick, not being able to move the ball at all. The Panthers dominated the first quarter going up 14-0. It wasn't until late in the second quarter that the team pulled together and got things going. The "defense of old" halted the Panther offense, g1v1ng the ball to Moeller in excellent field position - Neil Dougherty then hit Adam Adkins for a 35-yard touchdown pass. In the second half, Moe's offense was shutout, not being able to move the ball at all. With that loss, it puts Moeller at 6-1 and 3-1 in the GCL, probably diminishing their hopes for a GCL title. Moeller would have to beat LaSalle and then rely on Roger Bacon to beat Elder to be CoChamps. Moeller will face their last GCL opponent, LaSalle, Saturday morning at 10:00 at LaSalle. Please come out and support the Moeller Reserves Saturday. by Pete Hopewell
The Moeller Reserve Team lost a hard fought battle against Elder at the "Pit" Saturday morning 147. With the Varsity losing their first game, the Moeller Reserves had something to prove. With the inspirational "pep" talks, it seemed like Moe just couldn't lose. The Elder Panthers kicked a low kick to Chris Woyche who only gained a few yards. After just one play, Neil Dougherty threw an interception which would be an indication of how the day would go. The Elder Panthers quickly scored on a touchdown pass ending the Reserves' streak of zips. Elder was quickly up 7-0.

Crusaders down Bombers, 3 2-8' On Friday, October 7, the Crusaders won their sixth straight game of the season downing the St. Xavier Bombers by a score of 32-8. The Crusaders got off to a great start. The defense quickly turned the ball over to the offense, g1v1ng them excellent field position. Then, the Crusaders drove the ball 48 yards for the first score of the game on a four-yard run by Carlos Collins. Immediately following this touchdown, linebacker Mike Nichols intercepted a pass and ran it back 40 yards for another touchdown. Moeller attempted the two-point conversion, but failed. A few key plays by the St. Xavier offense allowed them to respond with a touchdown of their own. BEST OFFENSIVE BACK
C. Fisher
The extra point attempt missed, falling just to the right of the uprights. With less a minute left in the first half, the Crusaders managed to put the ball into field goal range and a 32 yard kick by Adam Hyzdu put the Crusaders ahead 16-6 at halftime. Moeller's first score of the second half was another field goal by Adam Hyzdu. Running back Mike Olexa scored twice in the second half, once on a six yard run, and again on a 35 yard pass from quarterback Casey Fisher. Near the end of the game, the Bombers scored on a safety, resulting from a bad snap on a Crusader punting attempt. The game ended with a fi.nal score of 32-8. BEST OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Offensively. the Crusaders executed the pass extremely well. Casey Fisher threw 31 passes with 22 completions for a total of 259 yards. Great protection by the offensive line made this possible. Moeller's total offense racked up 389 yards overall. Olexa ran the ball 12 times for 57 yards. Collins ran 4 times for 14 yards. Both had one rushing touchdown. Defensively, the Crusaders shut the Bombers down. John Walker played an outstanding game, making many key plays. including an interception. Casey Tucker also had an interception. It was an all-round, impressive outing for the defense.
Next week. the Crusaders expect to be faced with possibly the toughest game of this season when they take on the Elder Panthers. The Crusaders haven't lost a GCL game since 1972, and don't plan on giving up their 70 game winning streak. Coach Steve Klonne said, "It's going to be the biggest game the league has seen in a long time." A strong defense is believed to be the major factor in the outcome of next week's game. Come out and support the Crusaders - it will be a game you won't want to miss! by Mike Rohlfs

CHALK #1 IN THE WIN COLUMN AND IN THE ZIP COLUMN The Moeller Crusaders took the field Saturday, October 10th, against their second GCL opponent, St. Xavier. Last year, St. X scored the most points against this outstanding defensive squad. The "D" started out first in fine fashion. They held the 4-1 St. X team easily in the first series. That's when, for the second time of the year, the offense was explosive. They moved the ball flawlessly, punching the ball in the endzone everytime they had possession of the ball. The Crusaders went in to halftime up 29-0. In the second half, just as Coach Schira says, "kept on keepin on".
The second half was led by the whole Moeller defense and on offense, they were led by Lonnie Blackley and Joe McCollough, both adding touchdowns. In the Moeller Crusader's 6th victory and 6th zip in a row with a 42-0 victory, you can't say anyone was the Most Valuable Player except the Coaching Staff and the entire Moeller Football Squad. The Moeller Crusaders face their arch rival, the Elder Panthers, at the "Pit" on Saturday, October 15. Please come out to see if Moe Crusaders win their 7th win in a row against the tough Elder team. by Pete Hopewell continued

Did you know that Ken Griffey, Jr., a 1987 graduate of Moeller High School was named Class A Player of the Year by BASEBALL AMERICA. Griffey, hit for San Bernadino of the California League. Griffey was the number one pick of the baseball draft of 1987. Ken Griffey, Sr. plays for the Cincinnati Reds. Craig Griffey is a Senior at Moeller and is one of the top track hurdlers in the area. Ken Griffey, Jr. is one of the five active Moeller graduates in professional baseball. All have been coached by Moeller's current baseball coach, Mike Cameron. Bill Spoor is attending Penn State University where he is a walk-on football player. Bill has been red-shirted this year. (Last week, we mistakenly had Bill playing for Johns Hopkins. 1988 graduate Terry Dickey is
playing at DePauw. He is doing more than that. Coach Nick Mourouzis wrote a note to Coach Klonne stating that ..... . "Terry Dickey is doing a great job for us. He has started every game and has been getting better with each game. "I'm impressed with his work ethic and his fundamentals that he has. You and your staff are to be complimented! We could take 3 or 4 of your kids every year! Terry is a 'dandy'thank you." Terry was named most valuable player on offense for his performance against Albion. Terry had 204 yards of allpurpose yardage. He carried the

ball 17 times for 62 yards, caught four passes totaling 51 yards and returned four kickoffs for 91 yards. Quarterback Casey Fisher tied one school record and set another Friday night against St. Xavier. Fisher completed 22 of 31 pass attempts. The number of pass attempts tied the single game record set in 1984 by Mark Kamphaus against Akron CentralHewer. Casey's 22 completions set a new record for most completions in a game. The old record was 21 set by Kamphaus in the 1984 Central-However game.
Frosh suffer loss The Moeller Crusaders lost a tough game Tuesday, October 4, to St. Xavier 14-0. The Freshmen Team is now 3-1. On the opening kickoff, Moeller stopped St. Xavier at the 34 yard line. St. Xavier drove the ball 66 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful. St. Xavier led early in the first quarter, 8-0. In the second and third quarter, Moeller had two long drives but both were halted by fumbles. St. Xavier scored their second touchdown in the fourth quarter with 1:28 left in the game. This proved to be the icing on the cake. St. Xavier defeated Moeller, 14-0. Moeller plays Elder at Elder on Tuesday, October 11. Game time is 4:00 PM. Moeller will be seeking its fourth victory in five games. by Sean Tunning

On Friday, September 30, the Moeller Crusaders defeated Purcell-Marian by a score of 36-0 to improve their record to 5-0. The Moeller defense once again had an excellent showing. They started out the game and forced a punt after the first three play8. They gave the Moeller offense excellent field position on the Cavalier 38-yard line. Then, the offense capitalized on their excellent opportunity. Mike Olexa ran the ball in for the first score of the game. After the kickoff, the Moeller defense again held the Cavalier offense and forced them to punt. The offense took over on their own 47-yard line. After a few plays and some short gains, the first quarter ended. BEST DEFENSIVE BACK

On the first play of the second quarter, the Crusaders scored on a 31-yard field goal kick by Adam Hyzdu. When the defense took over, an outstanding effort by linebackers Tony Jennings, Jeff Crable, Mike Nichols, and Casey Tucker forced the third Cavalier punt in a row. The Cavalier defense was finally able to slow the Moeller offense and force the first Moeller punt of the game. However, the Crusaders quickly gained the ball back because of an interception by Kevin Henderson. The Crusaders went on to score once more in the second half on an 86 yard punt return by Chris Jenkins. CA new school record. ) This made the score 220 at the half. BEST OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

Moeller offense got the ball firs~ in the second half. The Crusaders drove the ball to the Cavalier thirty-eight yard line. However, the 42 yard field goal attempt by Adam Hyzdu fell short. In the fourth quarter, PurcellMarian scored their only points of the game. Purcell-Marian returned a fumble 57 yards for a touchdown. After making a debut in the USA TODAY, the Moeller Reserve Crusaders didn't want to end their streak of victories and zips and let everyone down. Moeller faced a tough and unbelievably huge team from Puree 11-Marian. Purcell-Marian received the ball deep in their own territory with an excellent kick by Jason Knecht. Then the Moeller Crusaders, with 4 zips under their belt, took the field in their toughest challenge of the year. They held Purcell easily for the first 3 plays till they punted to Chris Woycke and that put the Moe offense in terrific field position. On Moeller's first possession and first play, Neil Dougherty hit Adam Adkins on a 30-yard pass reception for the touchdown while Chris Woycke ran in the extra point. But the fast start for the offense proved to be only temporary. The Moe offense fluttered by ending drives with penalties and basic fundamental skills not being installed. Moeller's offense put only 6 more
points on the board with a 10 yard run by Steve Larkin proving Moe's 14 points would be more than enough to give the Crusaders a victory. Now let me go more in depth about the simply outstanding defense of the Reserve Team. They turned in 6 turnovers and all 6 of those were interceptions: Chris Woycke with 2, Mark Simmons with 1, Brian Kenny with 1 and Jason Knecht with 2. The reason for the many turnovers was because of the great rush of Chris Ryals, Dan Buckley, Keith Vankerckhove, John Kilcoyne, Mark-Mazuk and Tom Blatz.
The
Moeller
offense
with
fine
protection by the offensive line led by Sean McGovern, threw the ball efficiently with only a few momentary lapses of dropped passes. Neil Doughterty threw 7 for 11 hitting Joe McCollough for 2 catches, Pete Hopewell with 2 catches and Adam Adkins for 2 and the only reception TD of the game. The Moeller Crusaders face their second GCL game against St. Xavier. Please come out and see if the Moeller Crusaders can pick up their 6th victory and 6th zip. by Pete Hopewell
Did you know that Moeller has a large number of alumni playing football in college. Probably the most conspicuous alumni have been those at Boston College. Tom Waddle ( '85) has been the leading receiver for the Eagles and is an All-American candidate. After three games, Tom had 19 receptions for 266 yards and 4 touchdowns. Mark Kamphaus ( '85)

.Ray Hilvert ( '86) was the fourth leading receiver after three \games for Boston College. Ray had 5 receptions for 67 yards.
already thrown several touchdown passes and seems to be playing more and more each game.
Brian Williams ( '86) has been a starting defensive back for the BC Eagles and is the sixth leading tackler on the team. Brian had (after 3 games) 13 tackles, 10 assists, 2 passes broken up and 1 quarterback pressure.
A number of players from Moeller are members of the Dayton Flyers. Eric Bauman ( '86), Tim Markley ( '86), and Carl Knepler ( '87), and Scott Davis ( '88). Bauman is an offensive lineman, Markley is a linebacker, Knepler is working at the reciever position and Davis is a backup quarterback.
Offensive Lineman Trevor Ryals has been a starter all season for the Virginia Cavaliers. His coach has praised Trevor and Moeller for his fine technique.
The coaches at Penn State have been impressed with Greg Huntington's ( '88) technique on the offensive line.
Two members of the 1988 Moeller graduating class are playing football at Murray State. Don Feldhaus is playing linebacker and is starting as a Freshmen. Steve Broughton is on the offensive line and one of his coaches praised him by using him to demonstrate many of their drills. Holy Cross has offensive lineman Mark Stoy ( '85) and Tom Thiel ( '87) playing for them. Mark has been a two-year starter. D'Juan Francisco ( '85) is a starting defensive back for Notre Dame. When the Irish met the Wolverines of Michigan, D'Juan competed with Vada Murray ( '86) who is a starting defensive back for Michigan. Brian Murphy ( '86) is a starter for Hanover and has carried for more than 4 yards per attempt so far this season. Brian has also been an excellent kick returner for the Panthers. At the University of Minnesota, Paul Hopewell ( '88) is a Freshmen receiver that has seen a lot of action so far this year. Paul has been playing 15-20 plays per game. Scott Schaffner ( '87) has seen a lot of time at quarterback for the Gophers. Scott has
Mike HYzdu ( '85) is a starting defensive lineman for Miami of Oxford. So far thi~ season, Mike has 13 tackles, 8 assists, 1 sack and 3 tackles for losses. 250th Win for Moeller On Friday. September 23. the Moeller Fighting Crusaders won their first GCL game against the Roger Bacon Spartans by a score of 36-27. The score doesn't reflect the dominance of the Crusaders over the Spartans. With approximately six minutes left in the game. the score was 30-7. The Spartan offense scored three touchdowns on the second and third string Moeller defense. But. the Moeller first string defense was able to stop the Spartans and contain a very talented quarterback throughout the major part of the game. The Crusaders had a well balanced running and passing game. Quarterback Casey Fisher threw 27 times with 15 completions for 180 yards and three touchdown passes. His major targets were receivers Chris Jenkins and Matt Birrell and running backs Mike Olexa and Carlos Collins. all having three

As for the defense. the Crusaders faced a very talented quarterback from Roger Bacon. Jeff Stofa. However. they overcame the challenge quite successfully. at least the first team did anyway. Good pressure by defensive linemen Jim Perry and Andy Folzenlogen and ends Mike Schiess and Eric Schneider forced numerous imcomplete passes and attained eight sacks. One highlight of the gmae was a defensive .score when defensive back Tim LeRoy scooped up a fumble and ran it into the

endzone. Other tremendous defensive efforts were put forth by Casey Tucker, Jeff Crable and Kevin Henderson. For the second week in a row, the Crusader's special teams did a great job. Moeller had two 2point conversion plays. They also had an average of 52 yards per kickoff. Chris Jenkins returned three punts with an average of 8 yards per return. Overall, Head Coach Steve Klonne was not very pleased with the Crusader's performance. He feels there is much room for improvement. He said that we haven't played a game yet in which we were able to put everything together. He feels the team is still too inconsistant. This week, the Crusaders will try to put it all together when they take on Purcell-Marian. The game is Friday, September 30, at Galbreath, Moeller's home field, at 8:00 PM. by Mike Rohlfs

Then in the second quarter, the Crusaders climaxed a long drive with a 57yard touchdown pass from Jeff Raussen to Max Langenkamp. Shawn Lucke kicked the extra point and it was 7-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, Roger Bacon scored a touchdown on a long run. The score was now 7-6. Roger Bacon elected to go for the twopoint conversion. Last minu¡te thriller for Frosh The Moeller Crusader Freshmen Football Team escaped with a 12-7 win over Hamilton. On the opening kickoff, Hamilton raced 84 yards for a touchdown. The score was 7-0 after one minute of play. Moeller was determined not to be defeated. The offense took the field with aggression. Late in the second quarter, Chris Hess plunged into the end zone from three yards out. The Moeller Team missed the try for the twopoint conversion and the score at halftime was 7-6. In the second half, the Moeller defense played outstanding football. They held Hamilton to little offensive yardage and no first downs. Neither team scored
in the third quarter. The fourth quarter proved to be a decisive one for the Crusaders. With a fourth down situation at hand, and less than one minute left in the game, Hamilton attempted to put the Crusaders deep in their own territory by punting. That was when fate struck Hamilton. A surge of Moeller defenders blocked the punt, the bouncing football was snatched from the air by Terry Koetter, who galloped 57 yards into the promised land. Hamilton threw a despiration pass with two seconds on the clock, but it was intercepted by Jason Florimonte. The Class of '92 won their first of many games to be won in the next four years. by Sean Tunning

Crusaders reach 2-0 mark On Saturday night, September 10, the Moeller Crusaders defeated the Ursuline Fighting Irish of Youngstown by a score of 14-7. The Moeller defense started out the game. They quickly forced the Irish to punt the ball away. The Crusader offense took over on their own 15 yard line and drove the ball continuously for the rest of the first quarter. Quarterback Casey Fisher led the offense effort. He threw 21 passes with 16 completions and no interceptions. His main target was Chris Jenkins who caught 4 passes for a total of 46 yards. Wide receivers Joe Toepfer and Matt Birrell also had good catches. The biggest part of the offense's success was due to excellent pass blocking by the offensive line. They also did well with run blocking,

continuously blowing the Irish defense off the ball. The starting offensive line consists of center Brian Hindersman; guards Mark Ernestes and John Fitzpatrick; and tackles Jack Thrush ¡and Jon Baer. At the beginning of the second quarter, Fisher connected with Jenkins who ran in for the first score of the game. The drive took 17 plays. Adam Hyzdu then split the uprights for the extra point. However, the Youngstown defense came right back to score, despite a good effort by the Crusader defense. This ended the first half. the score being tied 7-7.

As the game progressed, the intensity level grew. With only one quarter left to play, the Crusader offense began to drive the ball again. After a few short completions and scrambles by Fisher, tailback Mike Olexa broke loose for a fifteen yard gain, setting the Crusaders up with a first and goal. The offensive line continued to knock the defense back, allowing Fisher to sneak through the middle for the second touchdown. The score was now 14-7 and the Irish began to drive. They got a few first downs and it looked as if they might score. But then, the defense kicked in, stopping the Irish for the next three plays. It was fourth down and long. Reserves over Middletown, 15-0 The Class of 1991, Moeller's Reserve Football Team won their second game of the year against a great athletic Middletown team 15-0. The fine preparation for this unbelieveable tough game by Coaches Bob Paolo, Randy Rath, John Gallagher and Head Coach Tim Schira managed to put all the things together for a very impressive victory.
Moeller's next score was a long pass from Joe McCullough to Todd Nauman. The extra point was scored by Chris Ryals on a trick play to put Uoe up 15-0 before the half.
The Moeller defense was simply outstanding. They were led by Chris Ryals, Dave Angello, Robert Pflanz and Chris Woycke. Middletown had the first possession of the game and on the first play of the game, Chris Woycke picked off a pass CHis first of two.) with a phenomenal catch. Moe's defense created many turnovers which lead to another zip. Moeller's next game is against Hamilton at Hamilton at 10 AM next Saturday, September 17, 1988. Please come out to catch the Reserves at play.
The Moeller offense started their first drive pretty much doing what they wanted. The offensive line was led by fine blocking from Paul Barry. With the fine blocking, there were excellent runs from Adam Adkins and Stephen Larkin. On Moeller's first drive, Adam Adkins capped it off with a long touchdown run. The extra point was made by Terry Knecht.

Frosh prepare for first game The Moeller Freshmen Team will open its season this week with a game against Hamilton's Freshmen Team. The Moeller team will be lead by Head Coach Bob Kolkmeyer. Coach Kolkmeyer will also serve as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach. Coach Carl Kremer will coach the offensive line and serve as the Offensive Coordinator. The Frosh scrimmaged Mt. Healthy in a controlled situation and came up short of scoring. Each team was only allowed ten plays at a time. Several Moeller drives ended when the Crusaders
reached their 10th play before they crossed the goal line. Mt. Healthy was able to score three times in their drives. The offensive coaches praised Backs Chris Hess and Jeff Raussen and Linemen Eric Wendt, Scott Moyer, and Brady Wolfer. Defensive Linebackers Scott Fye. Tony Houston and John Morgan. Defensive Backs Scott Thamann and Jason Florimonte and Lineman Terry Koetter all played well. The Freshmen are eagerly awaiting their first game experience and should continue in the fine Moeller tradition.

Crusaders over Colerain, On Friday, September 2, the Moeller Crusaders successfully opened the season with a 17-8 win over the Colerain Cardinals. The Moeller offense moved the ball well, especially in the first half. On just the second play of the game, tailback Mike Olexa ran thirty-eight yards to put the ball into Colerain Territory. The drive was somewhat slowed by two incomplete p~sses by quarterback Casey F1sher, who threw 11 times with 6 catches for 57 yards and two interceptions. The drive was kept alive because of a Colerain penalty for having twelve men on the field. This gave the Moeller offense a first down on the Colerain 25-yard line. After a few short gains by Olexa. Fisher connected with tight end Pete Daumeyer for a 9-yard gain. Then, behind a strong offensive line, Fisher snuck into the end zone with a quarterback keeper.
The second Moeller touchdown was set up after Jim Perry batted a pass at the line of scrimmage into the hands of Andy Folzenlogen for an interception. After a few short gains by fullback Scott Sheppard, Olexa broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run. The offense struggled for the greater part of the third quarter, making a few mistakes which stalled their attempts at driving the ball. However, in the fourth quarter, they came through. They controlled the ball for 15 plays, which took approximately ten minutes off the clock. Throughout the drive, Junior Mike Eutsey ran all over the Colerain defense, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. In spite of these excellent runs, the Cardinal defense was able to stop the Moeller offense on the 2-yard line. The Crusaders has the settle for a 28 yard field goal by Junior Adam Hyzdu.
The Moeller defense dominated the Cardinals all evening long. They allowed only one touchdown, which was the result of a broken play. The Crusader linebackers played an exceptional game. Outside backers Mike Nichols and Casey Tucker, with the help of ends Eric Schneider and Mike Schiess, stuffed the Cardinal offense . hold~ng them to only 26 yards' rush1ng and 144 yards passing. Junior inside linebacker Jeff Crable also played very well in his first Varsity start.

The score was now 17-8 and there was less than two minutes left to play. The Colerain offense made every attempt to score, but the game was put out of reach when Tony Jennings snagged the ball for Moeller's third interception of the game. Moeller Coach Steve Klonne was pleased with the performance of the defense. "They played a great game and made very few mistakes. " As for the offense, he thought they were too inconsistant. He said there wasn't enough balance between their running and passing game. However, this is to be expected in the first game of the season.

Reserves open with 12-0 The
Reserves opened up the 19881989 season with a victory over Colerain 12-0. Even with the terrible weather conditions, Moe managed to put points on the board. Touchdowns were turned in by Adam Adkins and Steve Larkin and neither were capped off by extra points. Moe went to the air early and it didn't go too well, but the running game was there. Joe McCullough led the Moeller's offense with fine play calling but only completing one pass to Pete Hopewell for a pick up of 11 yards and a first down.
on because of Moe's tenacious defense. The defense was lead by Jason Knecht and Chris Ryals from the linebacking corps and Buki Ajayi and Tom Blatz of the "D" line not to leave out Chris Woycke of the "DB's... The defense turned in its first zip of hopefully many. Moeller's special teams were very tough with 2 blocked punts. Coaching on the freshman and sopho· more levels in fC!lotball from 1973 to 1980, his teams had a 59-3-4 record, while winning eight G.C.L. championships. Jeff also coached track from 1973 through 1980. During his tenure as head track coach, which ran from 1975 through 1980, his team won two G.C.L. Championships. In 1978, he was selected as Cincinnati Track and Field Coach of the Year by the Coaches Association. From 1981 to 1983, Jeff was associate Athletic Director with responsibilities in the areas of promotion and public relations. His school duties during this time included fundraising responsibilities and lunchroom supervision in addition to his teaching duties. In 1983, Jeff !became the Athletic Director at Moeller responsible for the operation of the total athletic program (12 sports) at Moeller. The Moeller Booster Club sponsored a "Jeff Liebert Appreciation Dinner" this past July. Many friends, former players, coaches and supporters of Jeff turned out to honor this man that had served Moeller so well. Coach Booker Brooks of Minnesota praised Jeff as a friend and as a colleague. Gerry Faust returned to pay tribute to his friend and former assistant. Steve Klonne dedicated the 1988 season to Jeff and promised a sue· cessful season to go with the dedication. Jim Lippincott, the new Athletic Director, read the dedication found in this year's Football Press Guide. The Press Guide was dedicated to Jeff Liebert this year. John Shaffer, on behalf of the hundreds of players whose lives were touched by Jeff Liebert, read the following poem which was probably the best tribute paid to Jeff and his family:
An old man going a lone highway Came at the evening cold and gray To a chasm vast and deep and wide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fears for him. But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting your time with building here. You never again will pass this wayYour journey will end with the closing day. You have crossed the chasm deep and wide; Why build you this bridge at eventide?" The builder lifted his old gray head. "Good friend, in the way that I've come," he said, "There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This stream that has been as naught to me, To the fair-haired youth might a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I'm building the bridge for him." Will Allen Dromgoole THE BRIDGE BUILDER
In June of this past summer, Jim Lippincott assumed the duties of Moeller's Athletic Director. Jim replaced Jeff Liebert who had been the AD since 1983. Jim began teaching and coaching at Moeller in 1981. In 1982, he became Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach as well as Associate Athletic Director. As the Associate AD Jim was responsible for the day to day operation of the Athletic Department. In addition, he wrote the Moeller Media Guide and the Moeller Game Program. A 1967 graduate of Lima Central Catholic, Jim earned letters three years in baseball and football. He then attended Xavier University, where he served four years as as student and a graduate assistant football coach under three different head coaches: Ed Biles, I rv Etler, and Dick Selcer. After graduating in 1971, Jim served as an assistant football coach at Sidney High School for two years. From 1974 to 1978, he was head football coach at Marian Local High School earning Coach-of-the-Year Honors in 1974. He also served as head football coach at Sidney High School during the 1979 and 1980 seasons. As defensive coordinator at Moeller, Jim has built some of the finest defensive teams in the state. He has coached a number of All-Ohio and All-American players. Many of Jim's former players are still playing college football.

Saturday, August 20, the Moeller Crusaders successfully opened their pre-season with a scrimmage win over the Mt. Healthy Owls by a score of 34-13. The Crusader offense, led by quarterback Casey Fisher, met the challenge of what Coach Steve Klonne said was the best Mt. Healthy team he has seen in a long time. The starting offensive 1 ine, consisting of Brian Hindersman, Mark Ernstes, John Fitzpatrick, Jack Thrush, John Baer, Brian White and Pete Daumeyer played an exceptional game, opening holes for running backs Mike Olexa and Scott Sheppard all day long. They also provided excellent pass protection for Fisher who was 715 for 101 yards, highlighted by a long touchdown pass to wide receiver Joe Toepfer. All the wide receivers played an excellent game, especially junior Matt Birrell. Defensively, the Crusaders dominated the Owls, giving up only 96 total yards. Early in the game, Eric Schneider blocked a field goal attempt which aroused some excitement and set the tempo for the rest of the game. The defensive line played an excellent game against the wishbone offense of Mt. Healthy. Linebackers Mike Nichols, Tony Jennings and Casey Tucker also did well against the Owls running and passing efforts. One of the most impressive points of the scrimmage was the performance of the second team players. For many of them, it was their first time playing as a member of the Varsity team. They were able to step up and get the job done.

Frank 1 in Moeller's second pre-season game was a passing scrimmage against the Franklin Wildcats. Moeller's offense, after marching halfway down the field, got on the scoreboard with a 40-yard field goal by junior Doug Burwinkle. Then the defense took over and didn't let up. They allowed only 26 total yards. At one point, the Wildcats had the ball deep in Moeller territory on the 5-yard line. However, the defense held their ground and ended up driving them back to the 30. Other defensive highlights were a fumble recover by Eric Schneider and one interception by linebacker Tony Jennings. The offense was able to move the ball effectively throughout the game. The offensive line again gave the quarterbacks excellent protect ion. Sophomore Nei 1 Dougherty played extremely well in his first varsity appearance. Head Coach Steve Klonne was pleased with the teams performance in these first preseason games. For many players, it was their first time at starting and they needed to get their feet on the ground. Klonne is "cautiously optimistic" about the upcoming season. He feels we have a good team at this point but need to work harder and get better every day.

The Moeller Crusaders ended a successful football pre-season Friday night, August 26th, by defeating a very talented Middletown team 31-13 at Middletown Barnett Stadium. The Crusader offense had an impressive outing, despite the fact that two starting running backs, Mike ¡Olexa and Scott Sheppard were down with ankle in.1 ur ies. Junior Mike Eutsey and sophomore Carlos Collins ran well all night long in their place. Eutsey had 9 carries for 76 yards and Collins was 11 for 146. The offensive 1 ine, led by tackle Jack Thrush also played very well. The Moeller offense drove a total of 472 yards and had 21 first downs. Defensively, the Crueaders played well, however, they lacked some consistency in the early going. A few big plays in the beginning by the Middletown offense allowed them to drive the ball well. However, once the defense got rolling, the Middies offense was brought to a halt. Defensive tackles Jim Perry and Andy Folzenlogen played an excellent game, putting a lot of pressure on their quarterback. This constant pressure forced an interception which was caught by John Walker. Defensive end and Mike Schiess also played a good game, causing a fumble which was recovered by Mike Rohlfs. Defensive backs Tim LeRoy and Ron Tenkman also played well throughout the game.

One feature that made this scrimmage different from the others was the practice overtime period at the end of the game. Each team got the ball on the oposite teams 20-yard line and had four chances to score or get a first down. The Crusaders offense scored on the first play when quarterback Casey Fisher connected with running back Carlos Collins. The defense did just as well by forcing a Middletown turnover. The Crusaders, as well as their coaches, are looking forward to
the upcoming season. As always, they will face many tough competitors. Some of their roore challenging opponents will be the St. Xavier Bombers, the Elder Panthers, and, of course, the Princeton Vikings. The Crusaders plan to take one game at a time in order to reach their utlimate goal, the State Championship. Moeller plays their season opener on Friday, September 2, against the Colerain Cardinals. After being beaten two years in a row, the Crusaders are looking for revenge and hope to start the year off right with a win. by Mike Rohlfs
Sophomores also start their season The 1988-89 Football Season kicked off July 25 with conditioning. The official date was July 25 but as soon as the first day of summer came around, it was back to the weight shed to get ready for the "88-89" season. The program was strickly observed to see if you were there four days a week working out. The end of lifting was capped off with the annual IRON-MAN contest. After group workouts, the hard and strenuous 2-a-days started. This was a new experience for the Sophomores but everyone made it through fine. The Reserves opened up with a scrimmage against Withrow. With the closing of 2-a-days, the Reserve squad was anxious to go against new faces. The offense stormed out right away with tremendous protection from the offensive line which lead to excellent runs from Adam
Adkins and Lonnie Blackley. With the fine protection from the line, Moe soon went to an aerial attack. Neil Dougherty hit Steve Larkin for a touchdown and Moe was quickly up 7-0 after a Jason Knecht extra point. The defense was up next and they were tenacious. They were lead by the outstanding linebacking corps of Chris Ryals and Jason Knecht as well as a hard nosed defensive line and defensive backfield. On Moe's next possession, Dougherty hit Langenkamp on a streak for a touchdown and Noe was quickly up 14-0. The defense was looking tough until one maJor breakdown when Withrow's quarterback threw a long touchdown pass. continued

Moeller's next opponent was Fairfield and this would prove to be the Class of 1991's toughest opponent to date. We suffered a 3-0 loss. While Moe's "D" was thorough, Moeller's "0" fluttered and didn't execute. Special acknowledgements go out to Terry Knecht, Neil Dougherty
and Carlos Collins, who have moved up to the Varsity. All will remain with the Reserve except Carlos Collins. Moe's next game will be Saturday at 10:00 AM at Moeller against Colerain. Please come and show your support for a very promising Reserve Football Team. by Pete Hopewell
Football-Baseball combination Three Moeller students helped lead the Midland Cardinals to the Mickey Mantle World Series this summer. Third baseman David Bell, catcher Brad Hindersman, and centerfielder Adam Hyzdu were all part of the team that won the World Series. Hyzdu was named Series MVP with a .579 batting average (11 for 19), one homerun, three triples and three doubles. By winning this tournament, the Cardinals entered the Super Series in Youngstown, Ohio with a
3-1 record. They were to face Valencia, California with a 4-0 record. But the gold medal was rained out and the gold went to Valencia with a 4-0 record. The Midland Cardinals received the silver medal. Hyzdu and Hindersman return to Moeller to rejoin their football teammates. Adam Hyzdu is a quarterback/place-kicker while Brad Hindersman is a defensive tackle. David Bell also plays basketball at Moeller

Special Thanks: THANKS MOELLER FAMILY: The Moeller Family has done the job again! New and old members alike contributed to the successful operation of the stadium and the operation of the "split-the-pot" for the Captains' parents: A special thank you to the first time workers. Additionally, in the stadium operation, a special thanks goes to Neil Dougherty, Lou Thole, and Judy Schlotman for their extra duty. But the biggest thank you
goes to Mary Beyers who worked every week Cas she has for many years. ) She is a special member of the Moeller Family - one of the many people who makes this a fun place to be involved with. The "split-the-pot" effort was headed by Joe McCullough with weekly support from John Koutnik and Ken Pflanz. This group's effort will help defray the cost for the banquet and were a great help to the Captain's parents. Thanks, Tom Fitz

Miscellaneous Hockey: The Moeller Winter Sports Season has concluded with some outstanding performances. The Moeller Ice Hockey Team finished its season with a fourth consecutive Southern Ohio Championship. Coach John Basalyga's Skaters made it to the second round of State Playoff competition before being eliminated. Senior Co-captains Greg Doucette and Jason Rothwell were both named to the All-Ohio Hockey Team.
Basketball: The Moeller Basketball team also had only two seniors on its squad (Greg Stofko and Mark Staun.> The youthful Crusaders competed in the ever-strong GCL and made consistent improvement. A couple of the season high-lights were a victory over Dayton Colonel White, 71-65. Colonel White was one of the top teams in the Dayton area and advanced to the third round in the State Tournament. Another bright spot was defeating GCL opponent Roger Bacon on Senior Parent's Night. Coach Dan Ragland's squad faced Walnut Hills in the opening round of State competition. Moeller fell behind by 20 points in the first half but rallied to almost win the game. The second half rally was a positive factor on which to end the season. Leading scorers on the team were Joe Currin (14.2 average) and Matt Messersmith (11.8 average). The Reserves, under Coach Carl Kremer, improved greatly through the season winning most of their
games towards the end of the season. Coach Rick Bohne's Freshmen Squad made it to the Semi-finals in the GCL Tournament before bowing out with a 12-8 record.
Swimming: The Swimming and Diving Team really ended with a splash. They finished 8th in the State for their second consecutive top ten finish. Swimming Coaches Lynn Marggrander and Ann Schoenberger, Diving Coach John Borman, and Moderator Dick Beerman once again led a Crusader assault on the swimming world. Senior Steve Busse became the school 's first swimmer ever to capture two individual championships as he won both the 50 yard Freestyle (20.79 seconds) and the 100-yard Freestyle (46.07 second). Both performances will bring Steve the designation of All-American and will rank him in the top five times in the Nation for this scholastic season. Steve will soon be competing in the Senior Nationals at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Junior Diver Matt Borman finished in 5th place in his third straight top 12 performanmce in the State Competition. Matt will again be receiving All-American honors as well. Senior Todd Projeick, Junior Mike Klug, and Sophomore John Matanquihan, joined with Steve Busse to capture the Consolation Heat Championship (7th place) in the 400 Freestyle Relay in a time of 3:13.48. They will thereby qualify for Honorable Mention All-American. Mike Klug also finished 19th in the 200-yard Freestyle and 20th in the 100 yard Freestyle. Jason Glorius was¡ 17th in diving.

Wrestling: The Moeller Wrestling Team ended their season on a positive note. Ken Darby, Keith Fulmer, and John Rice all placed high enough in the Sectionals to move on to the District meet. Jon Rice took second place in the District to qualify for the State Meet. Jon became the 10th State Qualifier from Moeller. Jon won his first match at Columbus but then lost,
ending his season with a 29-6 record. CThe second most wins in school history.) Jon also holds the school record for the most takedowns in a season ( '87) and in a career (180). Jeff Gaier's squad only had two seniors on the squad (Jon Rice and John Hegener) which allows for a great deal of experience returning.
