Field takes aim at St. Xavier By Tom Groeschen The Cincinnati Enquirer
Traditional powers St. Xavier and Fairfield top the Enquirer boys Division I golf preseason coaches poll, with the season teeing off Monday. Moeller, which had the top Cincinnati finish (fifth) at last year's Division I state meet, begins No. 3 in this season's poll. Oak Hills, which finished No. 10 in the state last year, comes in at No. 7. A look at this year's top teams, as voted by area coaches: ¡ L St. Xavier (57 poll points): Sophomore Alex Martin made Enquirer first-team all-city last year as a freshman (38.5 strokes per nine holes) and was the Cincinnati Junior Met champion this summer. Returning seniors Brad Blinn and Brian Keating have been among the area's top players for the past few years. Mike Beausejour, a junior, placed third in the Junior Met this summer. Coach Brian Shircliff also has several challengers for the No. 5 spot. "It's a dedicated group that's worked hard over the summer," Shircliff said. 2. Fairfield (47): Senior Tyler Hassler was all-city last year (36.6 average). He leads another deep .~earn that includes Jeff Sullivan,
St. Xavier's Alex Martin won the Junior Met this summer.
Hamilton's Kyle Hodges averaged 37 strokes per round in '02.
Kyle Dickey, Ben LaFary and Chad Montgomery. There were big losses to graduation in Tony Bosken and Luke Mitchell, but coach Steve Kessler believes his team will challenge St. X for area supremacy. 3. Moeller (45): Senior Peter Heile, a three-year starter and allcity player, returns after averaging 38.9 as sectional medalist. Fellow seniors Ben Schonhoft (39.0) and Josh Winterberger (39.8) also played well last year. Junior Mike Kroeger (40) and senior Chris Conwell (40) also could be big factors, with junior Rob Chappell set to move up for coach Rick Bohne. 4. Hamilton (38): The Big Blue feature one of the area's elite players in afi.city junior Kyle Hodges (37.0). Coach Mark Smith also re-
lies on senior Joey Lorance (40.5), senior Brett Wilson (41.4) and junior Jeremy Simkow (41.0). Everyone is back except the graduated DougMoorehead, lastyear'sNo. 2 player. 5. Lakota West (30): Seniors Mark Senne and Alex Hampton are the only players back for coach Chris Conway. Senne was allGreater Miami Conference the past two years and averaged 39.4 last season. 6. Oak Hills (22): Junior Alex I.ambrinides (39.0) returns to lead a program that finished lOth at last year's state tournament. Senior ]arod Wong also provides some experience, with junior Nick Weimer also expected to be a top player. 7. Turpin (20): Senior Luke Underhill (38.6 average last year) is one of Cincinnati's top players, having been a regular since his freshman year. Senior Kyle Pinger averaged 41last year and has averaged 38 in preseason rounds. Senior Jake Sexton also should be a factor. 8. Elder (15): Junior Brian Iinneman, all-city honorable mention last year, should be one of the area's best again. Coach Mike Trimpe has a rather young team with just two seniors, Mike Ciresi and Brian Solomon. 9. Anderson (11): Dustin Arnold
is the top returnee, a first-team allFAVC Buckeye choice who averaged 38.5. Junior Aaron Barnett looks promising after also averaging 38.5, and junior Scotty Anderson is a transfer from St. Xavier who will help immediately. Coach Nathan Delany also looks for Dustin Manning to score well. 10. Sycamore (8): Seniors Sean Raffel and Scott Langhorne averaged around 40 last year and should be in the 30s this season. Junior Jake Webb and sophomores Paul Procario and Robbie Faulkner return for coach Jerry Capehart.
Divisions 11-111 Eric McKimm, a Wyoming junior, was all-city last year and helped the Cowboys finish sixth in the Division II state tournament. Elliot Moore, Adam Mayerson and David Bouchard also were part of Wyoming's state team as underclassmen last season. Madeira's Andrew Donaldson and Finneytown's Joey Buescher are among top players returning in Division II. The top returning Division III team is Summit Country Day, which finished ninth at state last year. Senior Alex Tieman, who shot 157 in last year's two-day state tournament, returns.

Moeller, Fairfield golfers living up to their billing Kings girls produce school-record 149 in tri-match By Mike Dyer Cf Enquirer staff writer
/3/0 '-/
While Moeller was the presea, son area boys' golf favorite thanks to last year's third-place finish at state, Fairfield has made a strong showing in its quest to defend its Greater Mianri Conference title. Moeller has two returning starters, while Fairfield lost six seniors. Fairfield senior Travis Allread has been consistent with his 38.66 average, as has classmate Adam Flick (38.88). Moeller has been led by coGreater Catholic League South golfer of the year Rob Cappell and all-GCL player Mike Kroeger. "Rob is a very con_sistent striker of the ball and a smart player," Moeller coach Rick Bohne said. "He is a coach's dream iD. that he comes prepared to play, keeps his composure, gives his !;>est and is always a gentleman." GIRLS' GOLF: Kings junior Colleen Cully has been a nice addition for the Knights this season. The
Mount Notre Dame transfer, who was lOth at state last year, has an average of 39. Last week, she shot a one-under par 35 at Shaker Run. In a tri-match with Northwest and Harrison, the Knights (7-1) shot a school-record 149 at the Fairfield North course. Cully had a 34, and Jenn Fread and Maxi Locke had 37 and 38, respectively. GIRLS' TENNIS: First-year Summit Country Day coach Joy Albi has inherited talent this season in sophomores and state qualifiers LaurenJantsch and Allie Steele. Albi said she often alternates them at No.1 and No.2 singles. BOYS' SOCCER: Madeira coach Jon Unger didn't think his team could go unbeaten the past two seasons. While he was proved wrong, Roger Bacon snapped Madeira's 47-game unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win Aug. 26. The Mustangs went 44-0-3 over the span, including a 1-1 tie in this year's opener with Kings. Madeira's previous loss was 2-0 to Springfield Catholic Central in
the 2001 regional title. During the streak, Madeira trailed just four times. The Roger Bacon game was the first time the Mustangs trailed at halftime (1-0) since the 2000 Division III state semifinals, when they lost to Worthington Christian 4-0. Unger admits this year's team may not be as talented due to graduation, but has been pleased with the play of senior Javier Ibarra, who has three goals in four games. "We'll suffer some setbacks this fall," Unger said, "but I feel confident that we will compete to the end in every game." • St. Xavier (1-1) opened GCL play early when the Bombers faced Moeller Thursday night. Coach Henry Ahrens said the Bombers, the Enquirer preseason No.1, have been struggling with injuries lately. Senior Kaley McDonough has been an early surprise for the Bombers, scoring in a loss to St. Ignatius Sunday and had an assist on the first goal in a win over Covington Catholic Aug. 26.

A medalist showing by Carling Coffing highlighted a banner day for Middletown golf Wednesday at the Southwest District Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course. It wasn't easy for Coffing, the 2001 state champion and 2002 runner-up. Ursuline freshman Kelsey Lindenschmidt equaled Coffing's 74 to send the match into a suddendeath playoff, which Coffing won on the third hole. "I struggled a bit out there today," said Coffing, the sectional champion and three-time district champ. "I was kind of up and down, but during the playoff, I was able to come around and drain a few putts." Her performance earned her a fourth straight berth to the state championships Oct.17-18 at Ohio State's Scarlet and Grey Courses. ''I'm stri!Qng the ball well, but I

definitely have to work on my short game this next week," Coffing said. Coffing will be joined in Columbus by Lindenschmidt and Springboro's Leslie Grabeman, who shot an 80 to finish third. The top three individuals qualify for the state tournament, as well as the top three teams. Coffing's performance was nearly matched by the surprising Middletown boys team, which finished
runner-up to Moeller to earn its first trip to state since 1982. . "I was a nervous wreck," M1ddletown coach Dom Williams said. "I'm so happy for the kids." Randy Johnson shot a 74 to pace the Middies, who had finished fourth at sectionals and were No. 8 in the Enquirer's Division poll. "We always knew we could do it," said Middletown's Tyler Duff, who carded a 75 out of the third position on the Middies' roster. "We just had to have a good day." No. 3 Moeller pulled out the team title by two strokes, witha301. Every Crusader shot under 79, led by senior Peter Heile's 73. Unranked Springboro claimed the final state berth behind a 70 from medalist Kevin Grabeman. MattSenterofLakotaEastshota 71 to qualify for state as an individual. He'll be joined by Fairfield's Tyler Hassler, who sunk a 2~foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to earn the last state berth.
On the girls' side, defending state champion Mount ~otre Dame overcame the loss of 1ts top two golfers from last year's squad to win the team title with a total of 331. The Cougars, No.2 in the area poll, finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up and top-ranked Ursuline. "We were really optimistic going ' into the season, because we knew we had some strong underclassmen," MND coach Grayson Fitzhugh said. "(Ursuline) coach (Marianne) Utz-Sahmes and I have been saying all year that either one of us has a real good shot at state." Colleen Cully led MND with a 77, including a 35 on the front nine. 'There's more pressure on you (being defending champs)," Cully said. "You know you can do it, but you have to go and prove it." No. 4 Lakota West shot a 354 to earn the last girls team slot. Accuser wants records sealed Enquirer wire services
DENVER - Kobe Bryant's accuser asked a judge Thursday to reject a defense request for records from a rape crisis center. The basketball star's attorneys issued a subpoena Sept 5 to the Resource Center of Eagle County, which runs a hot line, counsels victims and provides shelter. The defense asked for notes from any employee interview related to the Bryant rape case, along with training materials. Attorneys for the accuser and the center asked Judge Frederick Gannett to quash the subpoena, saying such records are confidential under state law.

Cougars overtake Ursuline to claim state championship
COLUMBUS - Despite trailing Ursuline Academy by one stroke heading into the final round of the state girls golf tournament, Mount Notre Dame made winning a second consecutive championship look easy. Paced by 79s from sophomore Colleen Cully and junior Lauren Bruce, the Cougars recorded a 326 Saturday on Ohio State University's Gray Course for a two-day total of 658. Ursuline was second with 681. Mount Notre Dame's stroke total was 16 better than last year's finish. "It was a lot of fun. Going back-to-back is impressive," said Cully, who finished with a two-day total of 161 to lead the Cougars. "It was kind of tough going into the second day, because we were in second place." Marysville junior Carly Truitt won her second consecutive medalist honor, defeating Dayton Oakwood sophomore Emma Jande! in a two-hole playoff after each finished with a 149. Middletown senior Carling Coffing, who won the state title as a sophomore and finished second last year, came in sixth with a 154 after a 78 Saturday. "It was a difficult round today," Coffing said. "I struck the ball really well, but I missed every single putt. I'm a little disappointed I played bad. The hole looked about as big as a dime."

Middletown rules course Coffing wins girls title; Middies boys finish runners-up to No.3 Moeller By Alex Blulller E11quirer contributor
A medalist showing by Carling Coffing highlighted a banner day for Middletown golf Wednesday at the Southwest District Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course. It wasn't easy for Coffing, the 2001 state champion and 2002 runner-up. Ursuline freshman Kelsey Undenschmidt equaled Coffing's 74 to send the match into a suddendeath playoff, which Coffing won on the third hole. "l struggled a bit out there today," said Coffing, the sectional champion and three-time district champ. "I was kind of up and down, but during the playoff, I was able to come around and drain a few putts." Her performance earned her a fourth straight berth to the state championships Oct. 17-18 at Ohio State's Scarlet and Grey Courses. "I'm striking the ball well, but I

definitely have to work on my short game this next week," Coffing said. Coffing will be joined in Columbus by Jindenschmidt and Springboro's Leslie Grabeman, who shot an 80 to finish third. The top three individuals qualify for the state tournament, as well as the top three teams. Coffing's performance was nearly matched by the surprising Middletown boys team, which finished
runner-up to Moeller to earn its first trip to state since 1982. "I was a nervous wreck," Middletown coach Dom Williams said. 3 Moeller pulled out the team title by two strokes, with a 301. Every Crusader shot under 79, led by senior Peter Heile's 73. Unranked Springboro claimed the final state berth behind a 70 from medalist Kevin Grabeman. Matt Senter of lakota East shot a 71 to qualify for state as an individual. He11 be joined by Fairfield's Tyler Hassler, who sunk a 25-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to earn the last state berth.
On the girls' side, defending statechampionMountNotreDame overcame the loss of its top two golfers from last year's squad to win the team title with a total of 331. The Cougars, No. 2 in the area poll, finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up and top-ranked Ursuline. "We were really Optimistic going into the season, because we knew we had some strong underclassmen," MND coach Grayson Fitzhugh said. 4lakota West shot a 354 to earn the last girls team slot.
