Milford entered last year's postseason ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer poll and in the top 10 in the state. But a loss to Lebanon in their first mateR ended the Eagles' season. Senior striker Colby Ferguson said the defeat still weighed heavily on the minds of Milford's players as they prepared for district play. "Just sitting at school today, and on the bus ride over here, we could tell everyone was ready to play," Ferguson said. "We all had it in the back of our minds that we weren't going to pull something like last year again." Ferguson scored a goal and assisted on another as Milford, ranked No.3 in the Enquirer Ohio Division I poll, rolled to a 3-0 victory over eighth-ranked Moeller in a district semifinal match Wednesday at Amelia. Milford (14-1-3) recorded its ninth shutout of the season. The Eagles advanced to Saturday's district championship gan1e to be played at Anderson. "Moeller's a great team and a great program," said Milford head coach Mark Trout ."We knew we had to come out right away and score early. Ifs big in soccer to gain that psychological advantage. I'm sure it helped us to get to them right away." ¡ Moeller lost eight seniors, including its leading scorer from last season. Despite the loss Wednesday, Crusaders head coach Randy Hurley was proud of the way his team came together this season. "Most people don't realize we were co-champs in the GCL," he said. "We flew under the radar all

Milford took control early, spending the majority of the first half on Moeller's side of the field. Meanwhile, the Crusaders were unable to challenge Eagles keeper Ryan Vonderbrink. "Otir defense was solid tonight," said Trout "We kept them out of range and kept things from getting too dangerous." Milford scored first when junior striker Ryan Wuest beat two Moeller defenders to record an unassisted goal, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 16:16 remaining in the first half. Ferguson scored on a free kick moments later to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead with 13:13 left in the half. "Colby's a guy that we count on," Trout said. "He creates a lot of problems for people who are marking

The Crusaders also lost sophoroore defender Quinn McDowell to an apparent leg injury With less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half Wednesdiy. "Wujek gives us an added dimension that we didn't have with him out," said Hurley. "But we came out flat in the first half." Junior midfielder Matt Telting later scored off an assist from Ferguson to make the score 3-0 with 22:14 re-. maining i1 the game. 'Thaf!' a great side we just played," said Hurley. "We couldn't eApose their weaknesses, and they eAposed ours. We've shown our ycuth and inexperience at tinles. We11 grovv up from this."

St. Xavier holds off No. 3 Milford 2-1 By Je~ Walln~r

St.Xavier,rankedNo.1intheEnquirer Division I area poll and No. 9 in the final Ohio Associated Press state poll, got goals from Ben Jackson and Austin Spohn and held off a second-half rally by Milford to defeat the Eagles 2-1 in a regional final match played at Lakota West. Milford (16-2-3), ranked No.3 in the Enquirer Division I area poll, finished the season with the fewest losses in school history. It was the furthest the Eagles had ever advanced in the postseason. "We really have to hand it to Milford," said Bombers coach Henry Ahrens. "They didn't quit. Those kids have a lot of heart. We've been tested in this region. We had to show a lot of fortitude." St. X took the lead when senior forward Kevin Krabacher fed fellow senior Jackson, who tucked the ball into the right comer of the net, giving the Bombers a 1-0 lead with 3:24 remaining in the first half. The Bombers began to seize the momentum late in the first half.
¡ Senior midfielder Spohn beat Milford keeper Ryan Vonderbrink for an unassisted goal to make the score 2-0 with 30:41 remaining in the second half. "We've had some really difficult times," said Jackson. "We played our hearts out and got lucky in the end." St. X (16-2-2), which had notallowed a goal in 14 of its 20 matches this season, lost its shutout when Eagles junior striker Ryan Wuest scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-1 with 13 minutes remaining. The Bombers finished with 16 shots on goal. Milford had 14. "Our kids play hard no matter what," Milford coach Mark Trout said. "We came out hard and had plenty of opportunities. St. X is a good team. We didn't take advantage of our chances." St. X advances to face Dublin Jerome (20-0-1) in a state semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cedarville University.

COLUMBUS- When St. Xavier scored on a textbook, two-pass exchange that hit Bryan Kanu in stride 90 seconds into the second half of the state title game here Friday night, all 3,039 soccer fans in Crew Stadium thought, "Uh-oh, here come the Bombers." Everybody, that is, except St. Ignatius. 'They started the game with three guys forward and three guys back," said St. X coach Henry Ahrens, "and after we scored, they still had three up, three back. St. X finished 18-3-2. St. Ignatius' first goal came at 11:58 of the first half by senior Jeremy Deighton at point-blank range.
