Boys' swimming preview
St. X still the team to beat By Alex Blumer Enquirer staffwriter
Bombers return eight state qualifiers
St. Xavier coach Jim Brower's worst fears seemed to be coming true after day 1 of last year's boys' state swimming meet, as his Bombers trailed Columbus Upper Arlington by nearly 40 points. But the Bombers roared back to capture their seventh straight state crown, and 27th overall. With eight state qualifiers back, including 100 butterfly champ David Mosko, St. X looks nearly untouchable heading into this season. "If anybody was going to beat them, it was last year, n Anderson coach Ed Bachman said of St. X. "I don't see anybody coming close the next two years." The Bombers have a tremendous junior class with Mosko, one of the state's top swimmers after finishing in the top two at state in four events, Bart Ginocchio (fourth in the 200 and 500 freestyles), Charley Hessler and Tommy J anszen. Seniors Jim Mertens, who has committed to Cornell, Brad Carman and Matt Wright are solid. Jim Barbiere (fifth in the 100 back-
stroke as a freshman), sophomore Alex Smith, and freshman Matt Columbus will contribute as well. ''We were fortunate to come out on the good end last year," said Brower, who has won 12 state titles with St. X, "and we're very, very excited with the team we have coming back." Turpin, fourth at state last year, and Sycamore should be the best of the rest. The Spartans return the core of their 200 and 400 freestyle relays, both of which finished in the top four at state, in seniors Kyle Greene and Rob Jackson and sophomore Nathan Butler. Greene, who's committed verbally to the University of Kentucky, was the state runner-up in the 200 free, while Jackson (50 free) and Butler (100 breast) both made it to Canton individually as well. ''We lost some depth, but we should still be competitive," said Turpin head coach Rene Contino. ''We're looking for Kyle to have a great year." Sycamore is led by junior Mark
Bernstein, a state qualifier in three events last year, senior Andrew Wittkugel and senior diver Mike Pennerman (11th at state). Mason could sneak into the mix thanks to the area's deepest team numbers-wise outside of St. X. Sophomore Spencer Hewes is the only returning state qualifier for coach Mark Sullivan, though. Lakota East boasts the duo of senior Stephen Grove and junior Jared Miller, a 200 IM state qualifier who should be vastly improved after focusing on swimming instead of baseball in the offseason.
Other swimmers to watch • Wren Dupre, Mariemont- A three-time state qualifier in the 100 fly (fourth last season) and twice in the 100 free. • Matt Angelini, Moeller Committed to Clemson, he's a three-time state qualifier in the 100 back and took fifth in the 200 IM last season. • Nathan Williams, Elder-Ajunior returning state qualifier (500 free, 200 medley relay) who some
feel could end up being better than older brother, Tim, who swims for Penn State. • Michael Guilfoil, Anderson The senior diver has twice finished in the top 10 at state. • Ian Ballard, Indian Hill - A state diving qualifier the last two seasons. • Elliott Keefer, Milford; Josh Schneider, Taylor- The top returnees in the state in their respective events (Keefer eight in 100 breast, Schneider seventh in 50 free). • Doug Spraul, Princeton- The junior was a state qualifier in the 100 back and the 100 fly. • Chris Fette, St. Bernard Was dual state qualifier last year as a junior (100 back, 200 IM).
Tournament schedule Sectionals: Diving- Feb. 8 at Miami University in Oxford; Swimming - Feb. 10 at Mason and Keating Natatorium. District: Diving - Feb. 15 at Miami; Swimming- Feb.17, at Miami. State: Diving - Feb. 23, Branin Natatorium in Canton; SwimmingFeb. 24-25, Branin.

OXFORD-Josh Schneider is ready to take his best shot at winning the state 50-yard freestyle championship- if, that is, he can go one more week without breaking his hand. In just his second swim of the season without a cast on his right hand, the Taylor senior knocked .23 seconds off his time in the 50 free at the boys' district meet at Miami University's Corwin Nixon Natatorium Friday night. "So far, the year's gone good," said Schneider, who first broke his hand playing football and broke it twice since then in nonswimming accidents. "I think I swam well, but I can swim better. I had a horrible pullout on the tum, but I'm going for the gold." St. Xavier junior David Mosko knows what it's like to win the gold. Mosko, the defending state champion in the 100 butterfly, took .54 seconds off his time while beating Princeton junior Doug Spraul in that event. Mosko feels he's right on schedule. "The approach our coaches take is tonight and next weekend are one big eight-day meet," said Mosko, who also won the 500 freestyle district championship. "I haven't shaved yet. I'll cut back a little bit on the yardage and work on visualizing having a great race." The Bombers had nine swim· mers automatically qualify in seven events - including three relays - while winning the district title with a 430·175 margin over runner-up Mason. "We're swimming as well as we can swim at this point in the season," Brower said. "The big thing this week is we need to get some big swims next week."
Schneider, the state's top returning 50 free swimmer after finishing seventh last season, actually finished second in the district to Sidney junior Paul Miller, who was the 15th-seeded swimmer in the event. Miller turned in an astonishing time of 21.32, down from the 22.78 he swam in his sectional meet. "I asked him where that came from," Schneider said. "He said he swam in a bad pool." The girls' Division II district meet is scheduled for today, and the Division I meet is scheduled for tonight, both also at Miami.

Boys' swimming preview
St. X still the team to beat Enquirer staff writer
Bombers return eight state qualifiers
St. Xavier coach Jim Brower's worst fears seemed to be coming true after day 1 of last year's boys' state swimming meet, as his Bombers trailed Columbus Upper Arlington by nearly 40 points. But the Bombers roared back to capture their seventh straight state croWn., and 27th overall. With eight state qualifiers back, including 100 butterfly champ David Mosko, St. X looks nearly untouchable heading into this season. "If anybody was going to beat them, it was last year," Anderson coach Ed Bachman said of St. X "I don't see anybody coming close the next two years." The Bombers have a tremendous junior class with Mosko, one of ¢.e state's top swimmers after finishing in the top two at state in four events, Bart Ginocchio (fourth in the 200 and 500 free styles), Charley Hessler and Tommy Janszen.

Mason could sneak into the mix thanks to the area's deepest team numbers-wise outside of St. X Sophomore Spencer Hewes is the only returning state qualifier for coach Mark Sullivan, though. Lakota East boasts the duo of senior Stephen Grove and junior Jared Miller, a 200 IM state qualifier who should be vastly improved after focusing on swimming instead of baseball in the offseason.

Girls' swimming preview
Ursuline remains cream of crop By Alex Blumer Enquirer staff writer
With 11 returning state qualifiers, Ursuline is quite capable of at least a fourth-straight Division I state runner-up performance. But it remains to be seen whether they can break through and win their first state title since 2002. ''We've got good depth, it's just a matter of getting enough of those people to place well at the end of the season," said Ursuline coach Tun Beerman. Diving will once again be a strength for the Lions, with seniors Jennifer Funch, Aimee Sundberg and Mallory Naber all multiple state qualifiers. Senior Sarah Krone and sophomore Sarah Tanner are the standouts among a loaded swimming corps. Ursuline's main challengers look to be St. Ursula and Anderson, who each return all of their key performers from teams that finished third and sixth at state, respectively. Senior Alex Doyle placed in the 100 freestyle (fourth) and the 100 butterfly (sixth) for St. Ursula, and then teamed with juniors Kelsey Vehr, Ashley Miller and Ashley Sohngen for state top-five finishes in the 200 and 400 free relays. Those three juniors were all state
individual qualifiers, as well, with Vehrplacing second in the500free. Anderson will be dangerous thanks to a bevy of strong distance swimmers, led by 500 freestyle state champ Anita Beck. Seniors Laura Tomes and Katie Chute and juniors Beck and Sarah Smith were all state qualifiers in both the 200 and 500 frees, while junior Leigh Hicks gives the Redskins another component for their 200 and 400 free relays. Sycamore should be competitive, too, with senior Amy Krone, the state runner-up in the 50 free, and versatile sophomore Erica Kao, who qualified for state in four events. Seniors Sarah Griffiths and Amy Bland and junior Sam Smit all retum for Mason, which finished one spot behind the 12th-place Aves at state. 'There's a solid balance of teams this year," said Mason coach Mark Sullivan. 'There may not be one dominant team, but the district should do well as usual up at state." Kings junior Lindsey Graessle joins Beck as the area's only other defending state champ in D-I after winning the 100 breaststroke the past two seasons.
