COUJMBUS - Three-peats for Middletown's Jeff See in the 1,600 meters and Mason's Angela Bizzarri in the 3,200 meters highlighted the final day of the Ohio track and field championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. The Ohio State-bound See added a win in the 800, chasing down Fremont Ross' Elon Simms over the last 300 meters on his future home track. "(Simms) was alothigherupthan thought, so I just decided to start my kick there," said See of the 800, an event he hadn't competed in before at state. "From then on out, I was just worrying about staying smooth and relaxed." With those two wins Saturday, See concludes his stellar high school

career with six state titles, including two in cross country. Middletown finished third with 28 points to 70 for Cleveland Glenville, which won its third straight state title. Cincinnati Christian finished second in Division ill on the strength of wins by junior Joe Hom in the 1()(). meter dash and the 1,600 relay along with Chris Lynch, Randy Terrell, and Kyle Thomas. Hom was also fourth in the 300 hurdles. In Division II, Wyoming's Harold Jones failed to defend his state title in the 800 meters. The senior was passed by Pemberville's James O'Brien after leading the first half of the race, finishing second.

In Division I, Moeller senior Luke Beuerlein finished second in the 3,200. Roger Bacon's girls took third in both the 400 and 800 relays in Division II. The Spartans were part of a four-way tie with Taylor for ninth. Bizzarri dropped out of the 1,600, but was pleased with her win in the 3,200. "I'm so excited, because this was a tough one," the junior said. "I felt kind of bad last race at regionals, so I was hoping I could come back and do well today." Mason finished in a three-way tie for fifth with 20 points. Other multiple-event placers in 0-I were Turpin senior Chanelle Hannon (third in the 100 and fourth in the 200) and Lakota West senior Kaley Connelly (fourth in the 1,600 meters and fifth in the 800).

Walnut Hills' 1,600 relay team of seniors Morgan Martin, Cori Carr, sophomore Anastasia Tarpeh, and freshman Tara Hessel broke its own area record with a 3:49.70, good for second. The Eagles were also sixth in the 800. "It really does make my senior season worthwhile," Carr said. "I've got a great team around me." In Division ill, junior Judy Bataille of Felicity-Franklin won the 100 meters and was eighth in the 200. "I wasn't netvous at all. I just looked out there and said, 'You can do this,' " said Bataille, whose results are even more impressive considering the school has no track and trains on the streets of Felicity. Cincinnati Country Day's Sydney Stoehr, Claire Bechhold, Kelly Thomas and Kamia Smith were second in the 1,600 relay.

The top of this season's Enquirer preseason coaches' poll looks a lot like last year's final Division I poll- just much closer. Moeller, last year's preseason No.1 and final poll champion, edged St. Xavier by two points to earn the No.1 rankinR" in this season's opening poll. Each team received six first-place votes. "Moeller's got quite a few returning athletes from last year," La Salle coach Frank Russo said. "They've got a very balanced squad." La Salle's lOth-place finish in the Division I state meet was better than St. Xavier's tie for lith and Moeller's tie for 15th; the Lancers are ranked third. Middletown, which led all Southwest District Division I schools by finishing tied for fourth at the state meet last year, is fourth.

Area teams got the track and field season going in earnest Friday in the Southwest Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches' Association Classic at Fairfield. On the girls' side, defending Di· vision I state co-champion Mason, despite graduating 15 seniors, had enough firepower to hold offWalnut Hills 77-64. Walnut Hills placed second and Princeton was third. In the boys' competition, Middletown was first, followed by St. Xavier and Princeton. The Mason girls began the meet with a decisive win in the 4by-800 relay (9:35.28). Junior Angela Bizzarri anchored that relay for the Comets and also captured the 3,200 meters, an event in which she's the two-time defending state champion. Said Bizzarri: 'This year's team, we have a lot of new girls, but it's coming together nicely." The Comets placed second in the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays. "I thought our relays really did a nice job tonight," said Mason coach Tony Affatato. "It was a really solid team performance tonight." The Middletown boys, fourth at

state last year in Division I, fin. ished with 83.5 points. "It wasn't our .'A' game,~ said Middletown coach Scott Dalton. "This early in the season, we're going to make mistakes.~ Middies senior Jeff See set a meet record in the 800 meters with a scorching 1:54.11 and anchored their winning 4-by-400 relay. "If we're in this shape now, where we can beat everybody, if we just keep working hard, we're going to beat them (later on)," said See. Middletown also got wins in the 100 meters, from jtmior Zack Da· vis, and the 4-by-100 relay. The Walnut Hills girls set meet records in the 4-by-200 (1:43.14) and 4-by-400 (4:01.00) relays. · Leading the way for the Eagles was senior Cori Carr, a winner in the 100hurdles (14.56) and the400 dash (58.72). Also for Walnut Hills, freshman Tara Hessel took fi:st in the 300 hurdles (46.29). "If you take over for me in the 300, you've got to win them all," Carr said jokingly of her advice to Hessel. "She's coming along real well." Turpin placed fourth in the girls' team standings, thanks largely to Chanelle Harmon's vic-

tories in the 100. and 200-meter events. Said Harmon: "I already set the bar for myself, so I just have to keep working at it." ]en Farmer (long jump) and Laure::t Price (pole vault) also were victorious for the Spartans. In the field events, Princeton's Brittney Dowdy was first in the shot put and second in the discus. Taylor's Emily Thompson outsprinted Emily MacLeod of Mount Notre Dame to capture the 1,600 meters in 5:18.21. Said Thompson. a two-time state cross country champ in Division II: "I tried to go with .200 (meters) left and she just passed me right back, so I just figured, 'I've got to go in the last 100 and try my best.'" Moeller's Luke Beuerlein notched close victories in the · 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. "It was something about the crowd," said Beuerlein of his 3,200 win. "I was starting to feel bad toward Lap 6, and I heard my coach screarr.ing. I got kind of a second win and just went." The only other multiple-event winner on the boys' side was Covington Catholic's Tun Duncan, who placed first in the 110 and 300 hurdles.·

I am in the process of preparing a wide spectrum of materials to give to Jerry Mauch Jewelers to engrave to keep everything current. Were there any track records set during this 2005 season? I would like to receive this information by Friday AM July ath so that I can take the request to Jerry by this weekend.
