Moeller, McNick win GCL division titles By Mark Schmetzer Enquirer contributor

Moeller knew that taking a lead into the running events at Friday's Greater Catholic League South Division track and field championship meet would go a long way toward winning the title. The Crusaders, No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, executed the plan to perfection. They won four of the five field events, including an upset win by Derico Murray in the long jump, and held on to edge No. 2 St. Xavier and capture their second consecutive

championship at La Salle. "We knew the field events would have to step it up," Moeller senior D.J. Hlovchiec said, shortly after winning the pole vault. "Coach wanted us to set the tone,· and I think we've done that." Moeller became the first team to earn consecutive GCL South championships since La Salle won the last of eight in a row in 2000. The Lancers also won in 1992, when the league was one division. McNicholas, led by Steve Gammeter's wins in both hurdles events, won its fifth GCL North championship in the last six

Track and field years. The Crusaders led from start to finish after winning the 3,200-meter relay Wednesday. Their momentum increased with Ben Sharp's win in the 100 dash, but they needed Luke Beuerlein's win in the 3,200 run -the second-last event of the meet - to clinch the championship. · Beuerlein, who also won the 1,600, was named the GCLSouth's Most Outstanding Runner in voting by coaches.

""Our .sprinters have stepped up," said Moeller coach Kevin Kohls, named coach of the year. 'They were the big question mark. St. X has some outstanding sprinters and some great relays. We had to match them as best we can." Said Bombers coach Mike Dehring, whose team rebounded from finishing second in the GCL South last season to beat Moeller in the Division I district meet: "Murray ended up winning the long jump. That's something we had to have. Sharp won the 100. That's something we needed.

They just did a better job. In order for us to beat them, we had to outperform them on the track, and we're not doing that."

The Milford softball team will try to keep its surprising postseason run alive when it takes on Toledo St. Ursula in today's Division I state semifinals. The Eagles will start junior Lauren Robertson (23-5) in hopes of stopping Toledo St. Ursula (25-4), ranked No. 2 in Ohio. Game time is 12:30 p.m. at Brookside Park in Ashland. It was moved from 3 p.m. in large part to accommodate the fan base for Milford, which will hold graduation at 7 p.m. today. 'The fans are a big part of the whole thing for us," senior Kelly Biller said. The state track and field meet begins today at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, with some field finals and all the running preliminaries to be contested. Mercy's Shanna Dickenson will try to defend her state title in the discus. The Tennessee-bound senior broke her own meet record at last week's regionals. Moeller brings a strong field contingent, led by pole vaulter D.]. Hlovchiec and shot-putters Zach Smith and Ben McGrath. Wilmington's Marque Jones owns the top mark heading into the long jump finals. The 4-by-800 finals also will be contested today. The Mason girls' team should be competitive in the race for the team title, while both Middletown and St. Xavier will be in the mix for the boys' team crown. DAYfON - Mason track coach Tony Affatato and his Comets girls' team were celebrating the Division I regional championship they won Saturday at Welcome Stadium, but their minds were already on the state meet Friday and Saturday at Ohio State. "We're not done yet," they agreed. Mason won seven events to outpace Colerain 89-48. Dayton Meadowdale was third. Walnut Hills, sparked by freshman Anastasia Tarpeh's surprising win in the 400 meters, finished fourth with Princeton fifth, Fairfield sixth and Turpin seventh. Walnut Hills went from almost not qualifying in the girls' 1,600 relay to winning it Senior Jessica Chapman was graduating Thursday night and wouldn't have been available to run, but when rainstorms pushed qualifying to Friday, the Eagles got a second chance. even the contest at 24-24. Senior middle hitter Ryan Trainor slammed in a pair of kills, and junior outside hitter sealed the win with an ace. The Elks forced the Crusaders to a fifth game for the first time this season, but Moeller prevailed to finish the season 27-1. Centerville handed La Salle a 26-24,25-16, 25-19loss in the semifinals earlier in the day. Moeller handled Worthington Kilbourne 25-14, 25-19, 25-10 in the other semiflnal.

WESTERVIlLE- The Crusaders made it look easy. Moeller sped to a 25-8, 25-10, 2516 win over Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals of the Ohio High School Boys' Volleyball Association State Tournament at Otterbein College on Friday. The tournament-tested Crusaders improved to 25-1 with the win over the Yellow Jackets, who qualified for state for the first time. "Everyone feels nervous, whether they've been here or not, but our guys have learned to channel that nervousness," Moeller coach Greg Ulland said. The Crusaders will face Worthington Kilbourne in the state semifinals today. The Wolves handed Fairmont a 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 quarterfinal loss. â&#x20AC;˘ "They're a big team," Ulland said

of Kilbourne. 'The key will be to keep them out of their system." Though Ulland is careful not to look past the Wolves, a final matchup against La Salle is a possibility. The Lancers handed Moeller its only loss during the regular season. LaSalle beat St. Edward, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24, in the quarterfinals Friday. The Eagles were a point away from forcing a fourth game, 24-18, but the Lancers chipped away at game point to earn the victory. "Rarely do you come back from a situation like that," La Salle coach Bob Wood said. The Crusaders will face a familiar foe, Centerville, in the semifinals. The teams met twice during the regular season, and the Lancers emerged with a .pair of five-game wins. "We're expecting a tough match against Centerville," Wood said.

Mason girls share Division I team title By Alex Blumer Enquirer contributor

Just .014 seconds. That's what separated the Mason girls' track and field team from claiming an outright Division L state title Saturday in Columbus. But the Comets are happy to settle for being co-champions. "It's the most unbelievable feeling I've everfelt," said Mason head coach Tony Affatato. Mason had a 48-44 lead on perennial power Cleveland Collinwood going into Saturday's final event, the 4-by-400 meter relay. Collinwood won the race easily, while Mason came in third after losing a photo finish for second place to Walnut Hills, 3:50.275 to 3:50.289, to seal the tie at the top. Mason is the :first.area team to win a girls' track title since Prince. ton in 1989. SeniorLeAunaSistrunkwasthe big point scorer for the Comets, sweeping both hurdle events. She earned her second straight win in the 100 hurdles. Sistrunk also ran on Mason's 4-by-400 relay and its fifth-place 4-by-200 relay. "Amazing, that's the only word," said Sistrunk. Mason sophomore Angela Bizzarri was another repeat winner with a victory in the 3,200. Bizzarri took third in the 1,600. "It's a lot of fun to see LeAuna win her race and then say, 'OK, I can do this too,' " Bizzarri said. Also in Division I, Middletown's Christina Grove was the runnerup in both the 100 and the 200. Mason's LeAuna Sistrunk won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdle events in Division I and also ran in two relays.

Division I. The junior won his second-straight 1,600 state title, although it wasn't easy. See found himself boxed in at the back of the pack before making his move over the :final400 meters. "I like to be up there, at least so I don't get into trouble," said See. "(Being that far back) made me uncomfortable." In Division II, Harold}ones won the 800 meters, making him Wyoming's first state track champ since 1972. He took more than 2 seconds off his personal best to beat defending champ John Sheppard of Oberlin Firelands. FOOTBALL: Cliff Hem has stepped down as head coach at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy to assume a fulltime role as CHCA athletic director. Hem spent seven years with the football team, with CHCA making Division V playoff appearances in 2002 and 2003. The new head football coach will be longtime CHCA assistant · MikeGims. • Chuck Studley, 75, the former Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach, has joined the varsity staff at Turpin. He will work with the defense under new coordinator Dave Kathman, who comes over from the McNicholas staff. Studley was an Indian Hill assistant the past two years.

Moeller proves it's No. 1 with Coaches' Classic win By Alex Blumer Enquirer contributor

Many of the Cincinnati area's track and field elite were on display Wednesday at the Coaches' Classic at Fairfield. "It makes you feel like the season's really going," said Middletown's Jeff See, who won the 1,600 meters. "I love coming to this meet." Moeller showed why it's the top team in the Enquirer boys' preseason coaches' poll, winning handily over a field that featured seven of the top 10 squads in the rankings. "I'm real pleased with tonight," said Moeller head coach Kevin Kohls. "Even though it's really early in the season and there are definitely some good teams not here, this tells us a lot about our guys." The Crusaders' effort was spearheaded by their athletes in field events, senior Ben McGrath in particular. McGrath won the discus, an event in which he finished sixth at state in last year, and

the shot put over teammate Zach Smith. "I'm looking to come in and improve every week," said McGrath. "Between me and (Smith), we're always pushing each other." Moeller's Sam Sharp had a big meet too, anchoring the 4-by-800 team that set a meet record (8:02.97) and just missing another meet record in winning the 800 meters. Mike Dowling won the pole vault for the Crusaders. Defending state champion See captured the 1,600 with ease, setting a meet record of 4:15.53. It was See's second 1,600 title in three years at the Coaches' Classic; he ran and won the 3,200 instead last season. "My goal was under 4:16," said See. "I was a second too slow in the first two laps, but on the last lap I had a little bit of a kick." St. Xavier did well in the sprint relays, winning the 4-by-100 and 4by-200 events. "Everybody ran to their potential today, which is all you can do at this point in the season," said Rauen. Chanelle Harmon won 100 meters for Turpin, and Oliviajanorek took second in the 1,600. "She's improved like you wouldn't believe," Dever said. Winton Woods took second overall with a win in the 4-by-100 relay and Alishia Glover's victory in the high jump.
