Moeller, Elder battle tonight By Colleen Kane The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two Greater Catholic League teams will face off tonight for a chance to make it to the final four in high school boys volleyball. Moeller plays Elder at 7:30 p.m. ¡ at Cleveland State in boys state quarterfinal action. The winner faces either Centerville or Worthington Kilbourne in the semifinals at noon Saturday. The state finals are .at 5:30p.m. Saturday. No.2 seed St. Xavier (22-5) is the third GCL team to¡ make it to the elite eight of boys volleyball. The team plays Stow in a quarterfinal match at Cleveland State at 6:30 p.m., with the winner facing either : Darby or Scioto Saturday at 3 p.m. I for a trip to the finals. Moeller (23-4) is the top seed in 1 the southwest after being ranked No. 1 in the state for eight of the nine regular-season weeks and winning the GCL South tournament May10. St. Xavier captured its first state volleyball championship with a 15-7, 15-12 win over Greater Catholic League rival Moeller at Cleveland State University Saturday: "Based on how the season went, this is who we thought we'd be playing in the finals/' St. Xavier coach Bill Ferris said. 'This is something we had been dreaming about all year." Grant Simpson, Nick Tenhundfeld and ]osh Lorenz each stepped up for the Bombers, who went 1-2 against Moeller in the regular season. "Everyone came to play today," Ferris sqid. "You get what you· get from the stars, and to win you need the next group of guys to show up. Today they did."
St. Xavier lost to Moeller in the 1997 state final. Both teams finished 25-5.
