WESIERVIILE- The Crusaders made it look easy. Moeller sped to a 25-8, 25-10, 2516 win over Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals of the Ohio High School Boys' Volleyball. Association State Tournament at Otterbein College on Friday. The tournament-tested Crusaders improved to 25-1 with the win over the Yellow Jackets, who qualified for state for the first time. "Everyone feels nervous, whether they've been here or not, but our guys have learned to channel that nervousness," Moeller coach Greg Ulland said. The Crusaders will face Worthington Kilbourne in the state semifinals today. The Wolves handed Fairmont a 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 quarterfinal loss. 'They're a big team," Ulland said
of Kilbourne. "The key will be to keep them out of their system." Though Ulland is careful not to look past the Wolves, a final matchup against La Salle is a possibility. The Lancers handed Moeller its only loss during the regular season. LaSalle beat St. Edward, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24, in the quarterfinals Friday. The Eagles were a point away from forcing a fourth game, 24-18, but the Lancers chipped away at game point to earn the victory. ¡ "Rarely do you come back from a situation like that," La Salle coach Bob Wood said. The Crusaders will face a familiar foe, Centerville, in the semifinals. The teams met twice during the regular season, and the Lancers emerged with a pair of five-game wins. 'We're expecting a tough match against Centerville," Wood said.

Fairborn defeated Lakota East, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19, in the regional finals at Centerville High School on Saturday. It was the third time in as many years that the second-seeded Skyhawks reached the state-qualifying match, but the first time they advanced.

"We thought we were good enough to win the last two times, but we didn't get it done," Cash said. "I think it was a mental difference this time. We've focused a lot more on the mental game."

"We have thought about almost nothing else since losing to Fairmont last year," senior outside hitter Dan Holloway said. "We worked hard all summer and all year long, but getting to state wasn't our goal -winning was our goal." Perennial power Moeller now stands in Fairborn's way as the Skyhawks will face the Crusaders in the first round of state play Friday at Sinclair Community College. Moeller beat Fairborn in four games in the Elite Eight Tournament this season. • Close call: It was the last team Centerville coach Pat Reynolds wanted to play, but the only team standing in the way of a return trip to the state tournament Chaminade-Julienne. "I didn't want to play them, especially after watching them play Thursday night," Reynolds said of the Eagles. "They've got people who can pound the ball and they hustle and they're well coached. I knew it wasn't going to be easy." It wasn't, but the defending Ohio runners-up got the job done, outlasting the C-J, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-13, in Saturday's other regional final and earning a return
trip to the state tournament. "As good as they were in the second game, we were making it easy because we
were making mistakes," Reynolds said. "I told the guys between games, 'If we cut out the mistakes, I think we can do it.' " All-region player of the year Ryan Versen sparked Centerville's offense with 19 kills. The junior outside hitter earned the Centerville Top Gun server-of-thematch honor with four aces in the winning effort. C-J coach Dennis Hale was disappointed by the loss but not with his team's effort. "Pat told me we were the only team in the bracket he feared," Hale said. "I'm proud of our guys. They played hard. The ball just didn't bounce our way at crucial times." The Elks will move on to the first round of the state tournament Friday at Sinclair.
