2023 Annual Report
Reflecting on 2023 elicits a range of emotions, encompassing tragedies and challenges alongside revitalized unity and resilience. We were rocked to our core with the October 7 attacks on Israel. Amidst a ricocheting surge in antisemitism, particularly evident on social media and college campuses, young Jewish adults began to face social alienation, professional ostracization and heightened threats to their personal safety, simply for being proudly Jewish. While it may feel easier to dig deeper into our own corners or throw our hands up in despair, together we are energized in bringing our mission and vision to life.
Through Moishe House, tens of thousands of young adults came together in community last year. Peer leaders were ready to respond to changing needs in real time, along with Moishe House staff, who provided crucial support and pastoral care for our communities in the days, weeks and months after October 7.
The momentum of our work became even more pronounced in 2023. I see this energy in the Houses, Pods and Moishe House Without Walls programs. I see it in the smiles and programming at our Retreats and Camp Nai Nai Nai. I hear it from the Base rabbis. I feel it myself through my learning with the Jewish Learning Collaborative. It’s so important and it’s hard work. At Moishe House, our job is to not only to do the work but bring the joy of it to ourselves and our peers. Moishe House remained a constant throughout the year, offering meaningful Jewish spaces for young adults to gather, connect, learn and build community.
We had the most programs and reached the most unique participants ever in our 17-year history. We continue to diversify our offerings and provide a variety of onramps to Jewish life for young adults. Our immersive Jewish experiences – Retreats, Camp Nai Nai Nai, and the Nai Cruise – were consistently sold out with waitlists. We are focusing on our proven models of peer-led engagement through Moishe Houses, Moishe Pods and Moishe House Without Walls, while also leaning into clergy-led platforms that give Jewish young adults direct relationships with rabbis. We are seeing major growth for Base (our rabbi-led, home-based movement) and Embark (a newly developed cohort-based initiative for young interfaith couples) alongside our flagship peer-led models.
While everyone’s path looks different, Moishe House continues to offer Jewish young adults a roadmap for exploring diverse and meaningful routes of engagement and connection, through our established programs and new offerings that meet the changing needs of the next generation of Jewish young adults. Together, we are navigating what it means to live an active Jewish life and be part of a vibrant Jewish community. Thank you for being on this journey with us.
With gratitude,
Founder & Chief Executive Officer
Our 2023 journey begins here.

Engaging with Israel
In the days following October 7th, 17 Moishe House community builders reported for active duty to the IDF – 6 from Israel and 11 from North America. In Israel and around the world, Moishe House community members immediately took initiative, organizing supply drives to support those impacted by the attacks, facilitating learning sessions to better understand the war, elevating voices of Moishe House leaders in Israel to share their experiences on the ground and offering spaces to process all of the tragedies of the war with others.

Moishe House has always been committed to building positive relationships between young adults and the land and people of Israel. In the post-October 7th world, we heard from our community builders that they wanted to share tools to help their communities grieve and process the escalating situation. That looked different for each community – some hosted art nights to decompress, some held conversations about coping with grief, and others put together fundraisers. As the war continues and antisemitism rises worldwide, we’ve increased our commitment to creating opportunities for young adults to learn about Israel, interact with Israelis to build relationships and to strengthen Jewish identities around the world.

Processing the Enormity of October 7 Together
As we grieved and processed the horrific attacks and resulting war:
• Moishe House’s Base rabbis and Jewish educators immediately organized a variety of virtual spaces for staff, community builders and community members to come together.
• The Jewish Learning Collaborative (JLC) created a 15-part series of virtual group Jewish learning sessions focused on support through Jewish text and tradition, geared toward Jewish educators, clergy and other Jewish professionals.
• Moishe House staff worked closely with House and Pod residents and MHWOW hosts to adjust their programming schedules to offer time to process the attacks with support from Jewish Life Specialists.
• MHWOW applications increased, showing an increased desire in young adults to step up as Jewish leaders in the aftermath of the attacks.
• Moishe House’s Immersive Experiences team helped Retreat facilitators pivot Retreat schedules to incorporate opportunities for processing the attacks and for Israel education into Retreats held after October 7.

Moishe House Young Leaders Show Resilience in Ukraine
Amidst the upheaval caused by the ongoing war, our three Houses and one Pod in Ukraine continue to serve as crucial centers for Jewish young adults, offering meaningful Jewish community, gathering places for camaraderie and support amidst geopolitical uncertainty.
In March 2023, Moishe House hosted an online briefing, “One Year of War and the Work Ahead,” which featured an opportunity for our global community to learn from Ukrainian community builders who shared their personal stories and experiences and how we can continue to support them as community leaders in times of crisis.

At the end of 2023, Moishe House suspended all Russian programming due to the increasingly complex geopolitical situation. We are grateful for the 15,000+ Jewish young adults who participated in Moishe House programming in the country since opening the first Russian Moishe House in 2010. We are in close touch with our Russian alumni and are encouraging them to attend our immersive experiences outside of Russia, while we remain hopeful that we will be able to resume Russian programming in the future.

Immersive Jewish Experiences: On-Ramps for the Twists & Turns of Jewish Life
In 2023, the Moishe House map was dotted with 126 immersive Jewish experiences – including StaffLed Retreats (SLRs), Peer-Led Retreats (PLRs) and Retreatology, Camp Nai Nai Nai & Nai Cruise, and our 4HQ Israel experience - each a pit stop for learning, leadership and meaningful engagement. During each gathering, Jewish young adults dove deep into a range of Jewish social, cultural and religious topics. These experiences also come with a ripple effect that can impact communities for years to come – many participants are current residents or hosts and they take their learnings back to their home communities through their own Moishe House programming, creating new paths for engagement and learning across the globe.
SLRs are weekend-long gatherings, facilitated by Moishe House staff and outside experts, with a specific Jewish topic or theme. Every SLR also includes a dynamic and inclusive Shabbat experience, accommodating diverse Jewish practices. With a cap of 25-30 young adults, demand continues to swell and most SLRs in 2023 were held at capacity or had a waitlist.

Retreatology, an intensive training, empowers young adults as they receive support and coaching from Moishe House staff on how to create their own curriculum and content, which then become Peer-Led Retreats (PLRs). Through Retreatology, Jewish young adults shift from consumers to producers, and inspire peers to take more ownership of their Jewish identities and experiences.

This Retreatology represented a pivotal moment in our journey and the excitement was palpable throughout the weekend.
Peer-Led Retreats (PLRs)
PLRs are weekend-long gatherings led by Jewish young adult graduates of the Retreatology program. Through nearly 100 PLRs in 2023, Jewish young adults deeply immersed in diverse Jewish topics – oftentimes more niche and unconventional than would be offered as part of an SLR. These rich experiences attract a broad range of young adults - from those intimately involved in Jewish life to those on the periphery of engagement. The 2023 PLR roster included an increased focus on identity intersections and their connection to Judaism or how they are perceived through a Jewish lens.

Learning About Israel through the 4 Hatikvah Questions (4HQ)
Through 4HQ, we brought together a cohort of 30 residents and hosts from 7 countries for an immersive 10-day Israel trip, addressing the deep demand for opportunities to dig into more complex questions about Israel. Cohort participants commit to sharing their 4HQ learnings through Israel programming in their home Moishe House communities. Founded by Moishe House in partnership with The Jewish Agency for Israel and Makom, 4HQ was inspired by the last verse of Hatikvah — the Israeli national anthem — and explores Israel education through four question areas around:
“To Be” (security)
“A People” (Jewish peoplehood) “Free” (democracy)
“In Our Land” (the Land of Israel).
The 2023 4HQ cohort has held 90 follow-up programs so far - the majority of which have been focused on providing space for processing, grieving and moving forward in a unified way as the Jewish community
