Urgent food aid for 6 million in Ethiopia

Monthly review of news and events on Eastern Africa Kenya: Visa Ban UK and US have placed visa bans on prominent Kenyans and their families as a means of pressurising them to act on corruption and participate in reforms. The visa ban will lead to revocations of existing visas and denial of future visa applications. “We have focused our attention on individuals we believe are capable of having an influence of change and because they have not used their offices in an appropriate and proper way, we felt that we would focus on them. Not everyone in government is an obstacle to progress,” said Mr Carson, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. The visa bans may be extended to the family members of these individuals.
London gay marriage triggers homophobic attacks in Kenya The family of Daniel Chege is being harassed by neighbours in Central Kenya following his marriage in London. Mr Chege and Mr Charles Ngengi got married at Islington Town Hall in North London, UK on 17th of this month. The backlash has been greatly fuelled somehow negative media coverage and the condemnation by hardliner religious leaders.
Ethiopia urgently requires about 160,000 tonnes of emergency food aid to feed 6.2 million people due to drought affecting much of the Horn of Africa, including Kenya and Somalia. Mr Mitiku Kassa, Ethiopia‟s minister for agriculture and rural development appealed to donors for more than $121 million Shameful practice In 1984 over a million people died in the country's notorious famine. Faced with the same predicament , Ethiopians are tired of hand-outs and demand lasting solutions. “Begging is a shameful practice. What we need now is skills and training. We don‟t need food aid anymore, “ says Ethiopian farmer, Tayto Mesfin. Tayto has benefitted from trainings on crossbreed seeds to improve his crop yield. Other projects such as grain banks and beekeeping courses have encouraged Ethiopians to feel they can survive the drought, and offers new skills to pull them out of the cycle of poverty.
Sudan oil to China via Kenya Kenya and China are in talks over prospects of developing a port on the Kenyan coast and transport corridor creating a new export route for China's oil in southern Sudan. China, the world's third largest economy and the biggest foreign player in Sudan's oil sector is considering building a multibillion oil export route from Sudan to Kenya‟s coast. Kenyan government was in talks with Qatar over a potential $3.5bn investment in Lamu late last year in return for a lease on 40,000 hectares of land for Qatar to grow crops. China may develop the Lamu port plus roads and rail links in the Kenya‟s northern frontier to help it ship the oil from Sudan. This will be a lifeline to the underdeveloped northern Kenya region and accelerate economic growth in southern Ethiopia and Sudan.

Somalia and the al Shabaab Somalia: Bras are deceptive Are your breasts bouncing, if not, you must whipped for deception Somalia‟s hard-line Islamist group al Shabaab is publicly whipping women for wearing bras they say violate Islam by constituting a deception. In Mogadishu, gunmen are gathering women perceived to have firm busts and publicly whipping them for being “deceptive”. After the whippings, carried out by masked men, the women are forced to remove their bras and shake their breasts. Al Shabaab stipulates that breasts should be firm naturally or just flat.
Authorities in Puntland, Somalia, are compiling data on foreign helicopters said to be poaching and stealing wildlife from the area while at the same time scaring off the farm animals.
The insurgent group, which seeks to impose a strict form of Sharia Islamic law, amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery. They have also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer.

Al Shabaab insurgents said they will strike the capitals of Burundi and Uganda in revenge for rocket attacks by peacekeepers from those countries that killed at least 30 people in Mogadishu. "We shall attack Bujumbura and Kampala ... We will move our fighting to those two cities and we shall destroy them. We shall make your people cry.” They also renewed their threat to launch attacks on Kenya, this time following allegations that the Kenyan government is recruiting and training Somalis in north eastern Kenya to fight al-Shabaab in Somalia.
The Italian Connection: Mafia and Piracy They get weapons and cash in exchange for toxic waste and mayhem Since the 1990s the Mafia have been known to dump toxic waste in the waters off Somalia where lack of government makes costs negligible and like most of Africa, prospects of prosecution or accountability are non existence. In 2004, toxic and radioactive waste caused illnesses when in Somali beaches. Francesco Fonti, a former boss of the 'Ndrangheta, the mafia of Calabria said he had personally shipped other waste to Somalia which could have led to the deaths. Toxic waste vessels were sent to Somalia and other developing countries such as Kenya and Zaire with toxic cargoes, which were either sunk with the ship or buried on land. In Somalia, various fighting groups received weapons in exchange for receiving the waste ships which is attributed to the deaths of a well-known Italian TV journalist Ilaria Alpi and her cameraman Miran Hrovatin killed in Somalia because while investigating toxic waste dumped at Bosaso, Somalia. This toxic waste dumping coupled with overfishing has contributing to declining fish stocks in the region while the weapons and finances supplied fuel conflicts and arm pirates thus fuelling piracy.

David Bahati, a Ugandan MP wants the death penalty for those having gay sex with disabled people, under-18s or when the accused is HIV-positive. The bill proposes widening the definition of homosexual acts and wants to fine or imprison anyone found to be promoting homosexuality. He says the bill is intended to protect the traditional family by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex.

www.mojatu.com Genetic tests to determine nationality Kenyans and Somalis are the guinea pigs. Its criticised as horrifying, flawed and naïve. U.K. Border Agency is to use DNA analysis to help identify a person‟s true country of origin. The tests are to be carried on Somali applicants to determine whether the asylum seekers are from Somalia or Kenya. If successful, the Border Agency suggests its pilot project could be extended to confirming other nationalities. However, scientists have labelled the tests horrifying, naïve and scientifically flawed by noting that the Border Agency‟s goals confuse ancestry or ethnicity with nationality. Genes do not respect national borders, as many legitimate citizens are migrants or direct descendants of migrants, and many national borders split ethnic groups. The assumption that Africans have a specific and localised DNA gene pool is naïve.
Mr Mo Ibrahim: No leader competent enough The Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership which is awarded to a democratically elected heads of state in Africa who have left office in the past three years had no winner this year. In 2007 Mo Ibrahim created the prize that awards $5 million over 10 years and $200,000 annually for life thereafter to encourage leadership that improves the prospects of people in Africa. Mo was born in Sudan is a former BT engineer. He created Mobile Systems, which he sold for $916million in 2000 and Celtel which he sold for $3.4billion in 2004. Holland Car - Africa's Top Company An Ethiopian Company, Holland Car Plc, came top in small business awards function held in South Africa. Holland Car won the overall 2009 Africa SMME Award because of its ability to create and sustain jobs in a challenging environment. It is built on solid principles and has established itself as a world leader in manufacturing, assembling and distribution of its products.

Joseph, Sipili Community Library, Laikipia West, Kenya Joseph arrived with three other's (2 male, 2 female) on the day the books arrived in Sipili library. He wanted to volunteer for training in library skills by KLT. As we unpacked the books, it became clear that Joseph had never really handled books before. He took each The ever inspiring and book from the box as if it was made of finest porcelain, and placed it delicately on the committed Joseph shelf. Having never finished primary school, due to lack of school fees like so many in Kenya, his spoken English in need of work. He was also very quiet. At the time, he had a donkey and a cart which he hired out to raise money for basic survival. Joseph was committed from the beginning. He showed and interest in the books, and started reading anything recommended to him. With time, his spoken and written English greatly improved and so did his enthusiasm and confidence. Despite not being paid, Joseph was always there, and always on time. His diligence, enthusiasm and commitment was, and still is truly remarkable. He was selected to be in charge of the library.
Books are fascinating: Kids at Sipili library
Soon, he started library clubs for children, and got his friend John involved in creating a drama group for the library. He has now taught himself sign language to enable him communicate with children from the school for the deaf nearby. He helps with a drama group at the school which performs at the library. He has also recruited children to help him keep the library neat and tidy, he also runs an art club. Joseph has not only enabled us to realise the establishment of Sipili library but he has enhanced the communities well being by supporting the Girls club at Sipili library and being in charge of coordinating Little Hands, Big Steps, KLT project for family reading with under 5 year olds.

His enthusiasm is contagious! His commitment is inspirational! These facets have rubbed onto the members of the community encouraging many more people to volunteer in the library and to help children learn. Joseph is still a volunteer to date and despite the hardships that come with lack of income, he neither complains nor misses a day of work at the library. He is unmatched! It is our sincere hope that sooner than later, we will find donors to enable us provide albeit basic compensation for his great work.

Star-Studded BEFFTA Awards makes History The 1st Annual Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion, Television and Arts Awards (BEFFTA), aimed at honouring the best entertainment and showbiz personalities in UK and across the globe made history by being the first of its kind ceremony and saw the movers and shakers of the black community come out in large number. The glitzy red carpet event celebrating the achievements of stars from the black African and Caribbean community hosted by Richard Blackwood and comedian Miss London atRichard Blackwood at the BEFFTA awards tracted stars both nationally and internationally including Face of Sleek brand Noella Coursaris, Angie Le Mar, Miss England Rachel Christie, Andy Abrahams (XFactor) , Choice FM DJ Abrantee, Lee Jasper, fashion entrepreneur Samata Angel, international makeup artist Eryca Freemantle, Playvybz Radio Crew, MTV comedian Kojo, Mobo winner Yolanda Brown amongst others . BEFFTA award winners voted for by the general public included Mahogany Model Management founder Sola Oyebade, Noel Clarke, Dizzee Rascal and Rudolf Walker, who was honoured with the lifetime achievement award whilst comedian Kojo won the BEFFTA Inspiration Award. With glamour being the word of the evening BEFFTA Awards were handed out to leading musicians, designers, comedians, radio personalities, television personalities, actors, actresses and a host of other categories within the arts. Other winners on the night included model Jasmia Robinson, X-Factor sensation Leona Lewis and top model Ibukun Jegede. The event went well but not without hiccups and teething problems, with 48 nomination categories one or two things were bound to go the other way. The designers category was mostly affected with three names forgotten to be mentioned, Thread needles tailors designer George Dyer, Designer Gavin Pierre Medford and Caz Longe. However Caz Longe won the category. Highlights of the night included muscle bound Tiny Iron who has Britains biggest biceps entertaining the crowd over his pronunciation of nominees names and Sola Oyebade scooping two awards on the night. BEFFTA Awards is here to stay and grow with the support of the community. They certainly put smiles on many faces on the night as winning an award in such a prestigious ceremony is a big deal. The award ceremony fulfilled it's first promise by awarding and honouring the best within the black community. The next promise to fulfil is support worthy causes and events within the black community. Founder Pauline Long said, “BEFFTA Awards has been greatly received and supported by the community including the critics who have pledged support for BEFFTA 2010. Being in London's most prestigious venue, Hilton Metropole, the award ceremony was as glitzy as expected, I have never seen so much glamour in one night under one roof. It was an honour to be part of it. Plans are already under way for BEFFTA Awards 2010 to be held at Royal Albert Hall. we hope to deliver a great show�.

Galiwango, a gorillas tale of survival and perseverance This animated mountain gorilla film traces Galiwangoâ€&#x;s journey as a captured baby Gorilla who is taken away from Uganda and illegally sold to a research facility into a western country. A group of scientists teach him how to use technology with the intent of profiting from the success of the project. Years later, Galiwangoâ€&#x;s gets back to Uganda and encounters where he encounters other gorillas. The story explores the dangers of living in a forest that is rife with conflict and greed. Close encounters with poachers and rebels drive the constant need by Galiwango and his friend to be alert and staying on the run as they struggle to stay alive. It is geared towards raising awareness to the plight of the last remaining mountain gorillas living in Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. The film is written in Luganda, Uganda's most widely spoken local language.
Great Ethiopian Run, over 30,000 registered The 2009 Great Ethiopian Run which will be held on November 22, 2009 in Addis Ababa has registered over 30,000 entries to date. Athletes from neighbouring Kenya and other international champions and fun athletes are expected to flood Ethiopia for this event. The event will be aired live on international sports TV channels. The race is expected to generate over $50,000.
