Sustainability and climate change are important to our organisation, and both Fearless Youth Association (FYA) and Mojatu recognise our responsibility to support the global effort to reduce emissions and negative environmental impacts.
Current environmentally-friendly practises:
• Paper recycling bins in the office
• A predominantly digital-based organisation (most flyers and information put online to reduce paper wastage)
• Car sharing when attending work events etc.
FYA and Mojatu prioritise the environment through several environmentally-friendly projects:
Placement programme with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent - New to this year, we introduced a new Climate Change Specialist placement to raise greater awareness around the issue of climate change
App Creation – We are currently looking at developing a new app for online booklets, to prevent wastage from printing physical booklets
Mojatu Magazine – Environmental and climate change articles are frequently published in the bi-monthly magazine, raising awareness of the global challenge. (Available as both a physical copy and online)
Climate Change Ambassadors Conversation Leaders - Ambassadors in Derby, Nottingham and Reading that act as a voice for the local community and encourage environmentally-friendly activities
Environmentally-friendly events e.g. Well-Being Farm Sessions – Activities in nature promote sustainable actions and include activities such as tree planting and fruit harvesting
The Staff Sustainability Survey was created to identify how staff in the FYA/Mojatu Nottingham Office prioritise the environment and engage in proenvironmental activities in the workplace.
In February 2023, the survey was emailed 18 staff and 12 placement students and received 15 responses (50%). Results were then complied and analysed using Excel
Two thirds of responses came from permanent staff at FYA/Mojatu (See Figure 1).
The vast majority of respondents (avg. 94%) thought that proenvironmental behaviours in the workplace, such as turning off your computer before going home, are extremely or very important (See Figure 5).
Switch off lights when leaving the office
Turn off your computer before going home
Turn down the radiator rather than open a window when it is too warm
Only print when necessary
Use reusable cups/mugs in the office
Recycle items rather than throw them away
Similarly, most respondents (avg. 84.5%) agreed they engaged in these pro-environmental behaviours when they come to work (See Figure 6). All respondents agreed that they only printed when necessary, reflecting that we are predominantly a digital-based organisation.
Extremely Very important Moderately Slightly Not important
I switch off lights when leaving the office
I turn off my computer before going home
I turn down the radiator rather than opening a window when it is too warm
I only print when necessary
I use reusable cups/mugs in the office
I recycle items rather than throw them away

Respondents had a wide range in number of days they were in the office, however 93% come into the office at least once a week (See Figure 7). Average commuting patterns also showed that over 2/3 of staff choose environmentally-friendly transport methods such as walking and using public transport (either buses or trams) (See Figure 8).
7. On average, how many days a week do you travel to FYA/Mojatu offices?
Figure 8. On the days that you do travel into the office, what mode of transport do you most frequently use?
The fashion industry and fast fashion can have significantly negative impacts on the environment. Majority of staff (approx. 54%) only buy new work clothing annually or even less frequently. When shopping for new work clothes, environmentally-conscious considerations such as environmental impact and quality shows staff choose clothing that will last (See Figure 10).
Buying lunch out has more single-plastic wastage compared to bringing a packed lunch from home. Overall, respondents brought lunch into work one day a week, however these results were more varied due to differing working patterns between staff. Although, 60% of staff brought in a packed lunch for everyday they came into the offices.
The Scopes (1,2 and 3) are a way of categorising the different kinds of emissions a company creates from its own operations and wider ‘value chain’ (its suppliers and customers).
Once data is collected, an organisation can calculate it’s carbon footprint.
By breaking down emissions into components, these analyses can be used to identify carbon ‘hotspots’ and potential ways to reduce emissions.
Annual carbon footprint reviews can be conducted to continue to reduce carbon emissions each year.
Scope definitions:
Scope 1 emissions
Covers emissions from sources that an organisation directly controls e.g. company vehicles and facilities emissions
Scope 2 emissions
Covers emissions that a company causes indirectly when the energy it purchases and uses is produced e.g. purchased heat and electricity
Scope 3 emissions
Covers emissions that are not produced by the company itself, and are not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by them, but by those that it’s indirectly responsible for, up and down its value chain e.g. employee commuting and business travel
The breakdown of emissions for 2022 was based on emissions from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022. Emissions were calculated using service platform Zellar.
