EDITOR’S LETTER
Photography by Arkan Zakharov
Welcome to the July/August double issue, one that represents how we’d live our best life if work didn’t get in the way: travelling to far-f lung destinations across the globe and finding inner peace in luxury spas. The dream, right? The summer months in the Middle East usually usher in the same kind of reclusive tendencies as winter does in Europe – too hot to go outside, so staying in is a tempting option. With this in mind, take some time out to rebalance yourself at one of the region’s top spas: Summer Skin Starts Here on page 104 will inspire you to treat your skin to some transformative pampering, while staying out of the sun. Should you feel the need to book a last-minute escape, we have a roster of alluring destinations within easy reach in which to find culture, great food and reasonable temperatures. Plus, French supermodel Cindy Bruna shares her insider’s guide to the South of France in Summer Escapes, page 117. To stay up to date with the latest in fashion, beauty and couture week in July, log on to Mojeh.com, which will keep you informed all summer long. THE PRE-FALL REPORT
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Rooted in practicality, there’s nothing like the diversity of a mid-season line-up to prepare you for autumn
SPOTLIGHT ON.... Trade in that fully-sequinned jumpsuit or larger-than-life tulle dress for something fabulously feathered. It might not be a groundbreaking trend, but Pre-Fall’s plumed numbers offer an ethereal breath of fresh air, as well as couture finesse for a trans-seasonal flourish. Look to Paco Rabanne, Attico, Valentino, and Koché, where ostrich feather trims ruled on statement coats, to evening pouches and must-have mules. It’s time to flutter your fashion fantasy as a beautiful winged creature.

I don’t have a style rulebook as such when it comes to getting dressed – but I do love a uniform. Olivia Palermo
“KARL WAS A GENIUS” As she launches her first collection with Karl Lagerfeld, Olivia Palermo reveals the inspiration behind one of the iconic German designer’s final fashion collaborations
S
he’s a global fashion icon and entrepreneur with an array of style collaborations under her belt. But Olivia Palermo’s most recent collaboration will no doubt be remembered as her most significant of them all – as one of the last undertaken by legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld before he passed away in February this year. Co-creating five bespoke designs for his namesake brand, and styling pieces from the Karl Lagerfeld A/W19 collection, Olivia recently flew into Dubai to launch the collection at an exclusive event at the Karl Lagerfeld boutique in Dubai Mall, where MOJEH was treated to an intimate insight into the latest works from the talented fashion powerhouse. “Karl was a genius in everything he did,” enthused Olivia as we chatted over coffee in Dubai Mall’s VIP suite. “From fashion and architecture to art and film, Karl was a true visionary, for whom exquisite detail and perfection were nothing less than imperative to every element of his work.” A long-time friend and admirer of the iconic German designer, the collaboration was one that Olivia was thrilled to be a part of. “The whole venture was super-exciting,” she revealed. “Being able to collaborate with Karl Lagerfeld was a truly incredible opportunity, and I’m so proud to bring our shared vision to life on this project, and infuse my own eclectic perspective to Karl’s Fall 2019 collection.” Offering Olivia’s New York take on Karl’s Parisian classics, the collection is based around the designer’s signature palette of black and white, and features an array of elevated staples that reflect Olivia’s polished aesthetic and innate
style sensibilities. “I always say that for any woman, whatever her age, when you buy something, you should consider it as a piece that will work year after year in your wardrobe, and invest in key pieces. So it was important for me to create a collection that was timeless.” With standouts including an elegant black tuxedo suit, a multi-functioning black and white tweed coat, a flawless pair of black leather trousers and a graffiti-emblazoned leather biker jacket, the collection offers an array of sharply-cut, easy to wear modern classics that will slip seamlessly into the wardrobes Olivia wears jumpsuit and bag by Karl Lagerfeld of stylish women everywhere. “I don’t have a style rulebook as such when it comes to getting dressed, but I do love a uniform,” Olivia explained. “When I was a kid, I wore a uniform to school every day, and I think I was the only one who actually loved wearing my uniform, because I could create my own, unique look out of it, and create my own sense of style,” she recalls. “As we get older, we all have certain pieces that become our go-to staples. And this is what I wanted to create in this collection. A modern uniform.” With a packed schedule ahead of her, having just moved into huge New York offices as the HQ of her company, Olivia Palermo Group Inc, and preparations for fashion month well underway, Olivia’s digital empire continues to grow at an exponential rate, and there’s more on the horizon. “This collaboration just made so much sense, because our style principals are so aligned,” she explained. “But keep watching – the brand will be evolving more than you can possibly imagine.”

How Yellow Submarine inspired Stella McCartney’s poignant new capsule collection
Psychedelic prints and vivid colour inspired by The Beatles classic movie, Yellow Submarine
Her dad, Sir Paul McCartney, is naturally one of her biggest supporters. But for pre-fall, Stella McCartney returned the compliment by celebrating the work of legendary The Beatles in a collection inspired by his band’s iconic film, Yellow Submarine. “I went to the screening for the digital relaunch of Yellow Submarine on it’s 50th anniversary last year,” revealed Stella. “I hadn’t seen it since I was young, and honestly it blew my mind, and affected me in a way I just wasn’t expecting. Especially this idea of connecting people and bringing people together – politically this message has never been more relevant. I came out and I was like ‘I have to do something.’” Featuring scenes, motifs and graphics from the film across womenswear, menswear and kidswear, standouts of the All Together Now collection include a flowing midi dress in painterly, patchworked dancer jacquard, inspired by the Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds scene, and a dramatic fur-free coat depicting The Beatles in their marching band uniforms, while a limited-edition monogram with mini yellow submarine motifs features on the Alter-Nappa Eclypse and Falabella. An artisan working by hand on a Kilometre Paris collection
SHIRT STORIES Born from a need to travel, explore and discover, Kilometre Paris’ hand-embroidered shirts are a must for women who love to wear their wanderlustfilled hearts on their sleeves – and beyond. With maps, rough sketches and coordinates embroidered onto vintage shirts, designer Alexandra Senes hopes they will take their wearers on a journey down a road less travelled. “The concept came about when I stumbled upon 400 perfect vintage tunics at a flea market in Paris,” she explains. “I remember seeing those shirts that had survived through the 19th century until now, and how much it made my day. It proved that pieces that take time to produce and use sources that protect the planet will last through centuries in comparison to a shirt from any high street brand.” Fully immersed in fashion’s new focus on sustainability, these unique pieces make for quite the sartorial postcard. “Our process takes up to 15 days,” adds Alexandra. “But vintage pieces take up to four months to be embroidered by artisans in Mexico, India and Morocco.” Kilometre.paris

Fashion captures the mood of the globe-trotting beach babe It’s time to add graphic neoprene and summer-of-love-inspired sportswear to your vacation wardrobe, as designers take their cues from the beach for S/S19’s hippie surfer trend. Rambling road trips and sun-drenched days on the sand were the springboard for both Sportmax and Etro, who rode the crest of the wave sending out boardshorts and scuba-girl styles on the Milan runways. In Paris, Julien Dossena’s mix-and-match Paco Rabanne hippie saw his muse escape on a sartorial adventure, forming her wardrobe along the way with clashing local market purchases and her own style staples; the result an eclectic fusion of slip dresses, leg-flashing sarongs and midi-dresses over skinny trousers. Producing the biggest splash was Natacha Ramsay-Levi, whose combination of market scarves and magpie-worthy accessories transformed the Chloé girl into an artisan triumph, her sweeping sense of bohemia a masterclass in free-spirited fashion wanderlust.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or haven’t scrolled through your Instagram feed for a while, you’ll know that Mykonos is the island to visit right now. Ibiza’s enduring appeal shows no signs of waning, of course, but if you want to be where the modern jetset go to unwind, this should be your next travel pitstop. Case in point? Bil Arabi jewellery designer Nadine Kanso, who fell in love with Mykonos 12 years ago, and has visited the island every summer since. “It’s a place with a very special sort of energy,” describes the Dubai-based travel junkie, who’s returning to the tiny Greek island in July. “You go out, party, have fun and then wake up the next day ready to do it all over again. Your energy just returns as if nothing has happened. It’s magic!” Over the course of a dozen gloriously-spent summers on the Cycladean island, her sun-drenched vacations have changed quite significantly; where they were once action-packed, hopping all over the 85sq km island, she now opts to enjoy the more mellow side of Mykonos, choosing extended dinners over late night partying. “I’m not an early riser, so my husband is always the first one up. He heads out to get croissants for us, which we have with our coffee outside on the terrace overlooking the sea. Mykonos is a very beautiful island, so it doesn’t matter where we stay, just as long as it’s facing the sea. We’re then usually on the beach by noon,” explains Nadine of her vaycay routine. “We go to several different beaches, all depending on the wind. When you visit Mykonos frequently, you realise that a specific part of the island is much windier than the rest, so based upon that, you pick where you will spend your day. Lunch is often at Scalia’s, where we’ll eat our favourites like grilled octopus and sea urchin, followed by sunset drinks at Scorpios or 180 Degrees, a beautiful spot that offers spectacular views of the bay and its lazy boats.” Weaving between daytime lounging and evenings spent breaking dishes at Sea Satin – a Mykonian institution and dinner date must for island first-timers – has become a breeze for Nadine, who can now easily navigate the island’s narrow winding roads and name each magical sunset spot and must-try fish taverna by heart. And she does it all in supreme style, in her summer uniform of glamorous, printed kaftans. “I’m always in kaftans, especially those by Issa – it has the most unique patterns that you can’t find anywhere else. I also wear a lot by local designers, and like to try and support them whenever I can. My other go-tos are bermuda shorts paired with long, white linen shirts from Gap, which look great with a golden, Greek tan,” says Nadine. “I’m also always in flats – you never wear heels in Mykonos! My favourite pair are my black Bottega Venetas, which are super-comfortable. I also have Prada and Miu Miu sandals in gold and silver with studs on them. Otherwise you’ll find me hanging out in a pair of Havaianas somewhere, enjoying the Mykonos magic.”

“ Travelling means everything to me. It’s made me become such a different person, more strong and responsible,” says Oumayma El Boumeshouli, a DutchMoroccan creative whose profession as a stylist and content creator has made hopping around the globe part of her lifestyle. Armed with her Celine Made In tote, a trusty travel companion she carries everywhere whilst on the road, the 23-year-old has aced traversing continents and numerous cities – but there’s one she can’t seem to get enough of, returning time and time again to explore its blend of wild magic, local culture and simple pleasures. “My love affair with Marrakech began when I used to travel to Morocco with my parents. My dad is from Ouarzazate, and we used to drive through Marrakech every time we were heading there,” she reminisces. “We would stop at my uncle’s and sleep at his house before we continued our journey. I was always very excited about that, because it meant a visit to Jemaa el-Fna Square, where we would have dinner and walk around afterwards.” A quick peek at her Instagram page, and it’s clear Oumayma knows exactly where to go and what to do when she visits; her collage of posts reads like a guidebook of the red city, its technicolour web of souks, ancient alleyways and intriguing neighbourhoods begging to be explored. “I love Nomad in the Medina and Le Jardin, which is owned by the same person – the food there is absolutely amazing. They’re also pretty hidden away which gives them a bit of mystery! For drinks I go to La Poste, which is in Gueliz, and in the evening to Comptoir Darna,” says Oumayma of her go-to hangouts when she’s in town. “ To get the ultimate Marrakech experience though, you need to go to La Mamounia. A multi-faceted city whose inf luence has clearly rubbed off on her, Oumayma’s urban chic aesthetic of combining luxury and streetwear labels is a clear ref lection of Marrakech’s delectable mix of history and modernity. “I like to wear a new outfit at least twice a day, one for the morning and one for night,” she explains of her daily Dubai uniform, a routine that continues through to her holiday wardrobe. “When I’m in Morocco, I’ll go for something like a white Zimmermann dress and a Loewe basket bag in the day, which I’ll team with f lats if I’m heading to the Medina for some shopping. Then at night, it will be either a red feathered Attico dress, or a f loral one by Magda Butrym, paired with Balenciaga pointy sandals.” An over-packer by nature, her luggage is full to the brim with cool girl go-tos, including a Danse Lente Johnny bag, wooden-heeled Jacquemus sandals, vintage Margiela jeans, a Nanuskha vegan leather jumpsuit and Midnight 00 pumps. “I travel with a lot of shoes!” Oumayma laughs. “Just as I like to change my outfits throughout the day, I like to have plenty of different shoe options to choose from as well.”

British, DJ
When she’s not on the decks somewhere in Dubai, DJ Patchoulee Chaggar is living a nomadic life on the road. “I’ve perpetually had a gypsy soul, so for me, travel has always represented freedom, independence and self-growth. I try to do it as often as possible,” explains the 45-year-old of her get-up-and-go lifestyle. “I’m one of those people that needs to spend time alone, so I’ll travel solo. Just book a flight, get there and see where the wind blows me.” And more often than not, it sweeps her back to London, her home away from the UAE. “It was a great place to be in my teens and early twenties. It was vibrant and inspiring, full of art, culture and an epic music scene which I fully immersed myself in,” she says. “I still have family and friends there, so I visit frequently.” Armed with her cherished Paul Smith holdall (she only ever takes hand luggage), her first pit-stop in the British capital is Ronnie Scotts, a haven for music connoisseurs like Patchoulee. “Every Wednesday they host a jazz jam upstairs. The musicians are incredibly talented. It’s a special place that fuels my soul,” she says, smiling. “If you like un-smooth jazz in a tiny little shoe box, you’ll love this spot too!” When she’s not submerged in the sounds of live music, Patchoulee can be found rowing on Regents Park lake or rummaging for vintage finds at Camden and Portobello market. “I used to have a stall selling vintage clothing there in the ’90s. It was my idea of heaven; the non-commercial music and the fact it was buzzing full of radical free-thinkers, nonconformists and creative types,” she recalls. A west London girl at heart, her days spent pounding the pavements of Notting Hill Gate, Westbourne Grove, Kensington High Street and Knightsbridge have seen her unearth countless local gems she visits time and time again. “Ottolenghi on Ledbury Road is a must! It’s a tiny restaurant that seats 10 people. If it’s busy, grab a take away box and stroll around Westbourne Grove – it’s window-shopping bliss! The food is simple, clean and full of flavour; a feast for your eyes and belly,” she explains. “I love the Tate Modern, as I’m a huge fan of Salvador Dali and they have a Surrealism Studio. I also enjoy checking out Graffik in Ladbroke Grove for more of a street art vibe as well as Lazinc in Mayfair. If I’m in east London, I’ll go to Pure Evil, as I like browsing around the gallery and concept store. ” Evenings see Patchoulee dressed in a Dolce & Gabbana LBD in search of a place with a view, spending time at favourites like the Oxo Tower, Michelin House and Bibendum, where the food and live bands hit all the right notes for the DJ. “My style by night starts from where any evening outfit should begin – shoes and bags! Back in the ’90s, I only used to buy matching ones covered in logos, and had an embarrassing collection of Gucci, Dior and Fendi,” the DJ says. “But I’m officially still vintage, and fine with that! I’m obsessed with my old Louis Vuitton mac too, because it will always rain in London. I’ll still be rocking it when I’m 80!”

ANUM BASHIR American, creative consultant
There are certain creative people who have the innate ability to inspire, making you wonder why we aren’t living our own life with a little more oomph. One of those people is Anum Bashir, the co-creative director at NDUO and blogger, known as @desertmannequin. Juggling multiple hats, the 32-year-old has garnered not only a massive following for her vibrant and witty online editorial, but has earned the industry’s respect as a fashion and brand consultant. Constantly on the go shooting campaigns abroad and in Tbilisi working on NDUO collections, there’s one place you can count on finding her when she stops for a moment to breathe – New York city. “It’s my second home. The entire paternal side of the family lives in and around the tri-state area, as does my husband’s,” explains the American creative. “I’ve been going to New York since I was three months old, and spent countless summers there as a child, and even a few years (post-college) as an adult figuring out what I wanted to do with my life at the start of my career.” And she chose well; in a constant state of evolution, New York changes with every passing moment, bringing in a steady flow of new people, places and projects to experience each year. “I’d like to think I know Manhattan relatively well at this point, but I go back yearly to discover new things. That’s the beauty of it, she always keeps you guessing,” Anum says with a smile. A seasoned foodie, Anum can be counted on for restaurant recommendations; her passion for experimenting has seen her rack up a dining roster that any first-timer to the Big Apple would be a fool not to follow. “Sant Ambroeus, Kappo Masa, Le CouCou, Mercer Kitchen, Jack’s Wife Freda, Gramercy Tavern, Buvette, and so many more! I love eating, so you do the math,” she says listing from memory some of her favourite places. “The city offers incredible cuisines of all kinds. I go there to eat, period! But for anyone visiting, a NYC pizza is a must – it’s world-famous and I’d definitely make sure to down a pan or two.” When she’s not eating her way around the city, Anum turns to her second love, fashion. “I visit stores like Barneys and Bergdorfs for obvious reasons. Other great shopping venues include FiveStory, Maryam Nassir Zadeh,
A fan of a good suit, Anum turns to brands like Tibi (above) for its relaxed silhouettes. Below, walking in New York’s Meatpacking district

SoHo and Nolita are Anum’s favourite areas for shopping. Here, she is pictured by the Marc Jacobs store in SoHo
What Goes Around Comes Around, Rachel Comey, Frankie Shop, and Anthom, to name a few,” she reveals. “SoHo and Nolita are probably two of my favourite areas to walk around in and shop, too. All the boutiques are there. I also love visiting NYC-based brands like Kule, Tibi and Prounis.” Known to spend hours exploring the city’s array of boutiques, the avid shopper comes fully prepared; she’s expertly honed her packing skills, travelling with a pared-down capsule holiday wardrobe to ensure there’s plenty of room in her Louis Vuitton luggage for all the new fashion discoveries she picks up along the way. “My packing style is to pre-plan outfits in advance. I find recreating different iterations of looks really quite helpful and efficient,” she explains. “I have this classic black boyfriend-style Acne Studios blazer, which I can wear over a slip dress, with a T-shirt and shorts, or with a button-down and jeans. Voila that’s three different outfits.” Her daytime looks on holiday often comprise silky button-downs by Dries Van Noten and Rejina Pyo, pairing them with flips-flops from Tibi or flats by Ancient Greek Sandals, and then a woven tote as a multi-purpose summer carry-all. Changing up her look for night time, her go-to is an easy-to-wear dress from brands like Rhode Resort, Doen, LoveShackFancy or Rosie Assoulin. “Evenings are a great time to wear some sequins or more luxurious fabrics,” Anum smiles. “ I would say a Missoni kaftan or summer poncho makes for a great choice, too.” This season’s shopping mission? “I’m on the hunt for a pair of black velvet Mary Jane flats. I won’t be leaving New York this summer without a pair!”

A MAGICAL MILESTONE Victoire de Castellane celebrates 20 years at Dior

The Gem Dior collection was shown alongside 19 exclusive creations by Maria Grazia Chiuri
She’s taken the life’s work of Christian Dior and reimagined it into some of the most fantastical pieces haute jewellery has ever seen. Previously drawing inspiration from Monsieur Dior’s love of flowers, his fondness of lace, his childhood home of Granville, and even the emblematic caning featured in chairs used in his couture shows, Victoire de Castellane, the vivacious and talented designer behind Dior’s magnificent fine jewellery, is celebrating her 20th anniversary at the house with a 99-piece collection – her largest yet – to toast her long-anticipated milestone. Featuring a unique story of stones and colours titled Gem Dior, the collection was presented at a glittering event at Palazzo Labia, Venice, alongside 19 balletic creations by artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri designed specifically for the occasion; the tulle, chiffon and sunray-pleated taffeta pieces the perfect contemporary reinterpretations for the new graphic jewellery. Focused upon unprecedented harmonies, subtle plays of polychromy and colour gradations, rather than previous collections inspired by a specific theme, from diamonds and rubies to the remarkable precious stones of which Victoire is so fond – spinels, tanzanites, rubellites and more – the architectural and abstract jewels saw a juxtaposition of gemstones designed to sit randomly on the skin. A testament to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s genius as well as the mastery of the high jewellery workshops at Dior, a dynamic new chapter at the house has truly begun.

Cutting-edge treatments, without a knife in sight
MESOTHERAPY A quick-fix, lunchtime treatment, Mesotherapy has been popular for a number of years thanks to its long-term rejuvenating benefits to the skin. Originally developed as a way of injecting pain relief locally, the minimally invasive procedure requires around 30 minutes in total and consists of a nutrient-rich concoction of vitamins, hyaluronic acid and amino acids being injected into the mesoderm – middle layer – of the skin to deliver the hardworking ingredients right to the heart of the problem – like a really nutritious lunch for your face. The small injections, which are spread out across the cheeks, can be mildly uncomfortable depending on your tolerance to the topical anesthetic, but it lasts for seconds. A small bit of redness may remain, for the more sensitive sometimes bruising, but the procedure is mostly undetectable. Results are not immediate, but as the cocktail gets to work under the skin, boosting collagen reproduction, hydrating and nourishing it deep down, over subsequent weeks skin texture and tone is improved. It is recommended to have four to six sessions to see real, ongoing results, but like everything if you don’t maintain a healthy diet, get enough sleep or take care of your skin with regular facials and a stellar skincare regime, the results won’t show. From Dhs3,500, Beverly Hills Sunset Surgery Centre, Dubai, 800 238 3759
BIO-REVITALISATION Dubai newcomer Dr. Lola’s signature bio-revitalisation protocol utilises the power of active peptides, AHA and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin on a cellular level. Micro needles administer products just under the surface of the skin, allowing water to be absorbed from the body to rebuild collagen, activate blood flow and boost lymphatic drainage. A virtually painless procedure, this deep-hydrating treatment not only boosts moisture levels, it also significntly reduces pore size and firms the skin. Perfect for those who will be taking numerous flights over a jet-setting summer, and will see the effects of the dehydrating cabin environment on their face, as well as sun-worshippers who will benefit from extra moisture after weeks on a lounger, poolside. Dhs 1,200 to 1,500 per session, Rebecca Treston Aesthetics, Dubai, +971 4 394 5422
ULTHERAPY Hollywood’s favourite non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery is quickly becoming the Dubai girl’s clock-stopping treatment of choice. Designed to lift and tighten, Ultherapy uses ultrasound imaging to deliver thermal energy up to 4.5 millimeters deep into the skin of the face, neck, and décolleté to stimulate collagen production, giving a fresh, youthful and noticeably smoother complexion that looks plumped and glowing. Admittedly not pain-free – imagine the sensation of tiny, hot rubber bands being repeatedly flicked at the face – the treatment, which takes no longer than 60 minutes, will leave you looking a little red and flushed, like you’ve just finished a rather demanding workout. Results aren’t immediate, and will usually be seen after two months, so patience is required. But if you can wait it out, and take the slightly unpleasant flicking sensation during the procedure, you’ll witness a significant boost in collagen producton, resulting in plumped skin that looks visibly more lifted with a vast improvement in elasticity levels. Impressive results last between six months and a year. Dhs5,500 per session, L’Esprit, Dubai, +971 4 338 8238
NON-SURGICAL THREAD LIFT Dubbed Dubai’s Godfather of non-surgical facial rejuvenation, Dr. Kayle has forged a reputation for his ability to deliver improved – although natural – results for his patients thanks to this three-step non-invasive facial procedure that showcases his mastery in thread lifting. Using minimally invasive techniques, this pioneering non-surgical facelift freshens, tightens and lifts the skin for a naturally youthful look. Based on the classic thread lift, which uses temporary sutures to produce a subtle but visible ‘lift’ in the skin, unlike most clinicians, who only employ one type of thread to carry out the procedure, Dr. Kayle uses three different types of thread to enhance efficacy, which in turn ensures better results. MANI:PEDI:CURE BY BASTIEN GONZALEZ He’s the world’s most famous podiatrist, dubbed the “foot virtuoso”, treats models and celebrities and has made the ugly job of cleaning feet a luxurious art form. Bastien Gonzalez has undoubtedly transformed the world of footcare and, lucky for us, three out of 12 of his salons are in Dubai. Spending Dhs755 on a mani-pedi when we have an abundance of salons that offer the same for a fraction of the price might sound extravagant, but as Bastien’s loyal fanbase know, it’s money well spent when feet are on display as much as ours. So what makes his treatments so special? Every member of his team is trained in his treatment protocols ensuring clients receive the very best quality care, using specially designed tools to tackle every type of issue with the bonus of a massage add-on – in a nutshell, his team offer medical grade treatment for hands and feet in a spa environment. Laura Grosbois is the studio manager of the PEDI:MANI:CURE STUDIOS by Bastien Gonzalez at ShuiQi Spa at Atlantis The Palm – a trained podiatrist, she treats every type of foot condition in her Dubai clients. “A main issue I have noticed is the damage done to the toenails. The nail plate is often marred by having nail polish on for too long, which causes it to become yellowish or completely dry; showing white mark or weakness,” she says. In just one session Laura transforms feet using electric tools, akin to those seen at the dentist, to remove dryness and dead skin. “We use a drill machine to remove the damaged layer of the nail, then we buff with a chamois leather and nail brightness buffing cream made with mother-of-pearl. This technique actually comes from the great-grandmother of Bastien Gonzalez, it restores the natural beauty of the nail and also improves its quality by stimulation of the blood circulation.” And rather than covering nails in the season’s brightest shade, post-Bastien nails are left naked for they are so unbelievably buffed and shiny, a result that literally lasts weeks (two weeks later and mine are still shining), you will want to show them off. Recommended only once every two months if nails are in good condition, the price is well worth the investment. Bastien’s Duo Treatment, Dhs755, ShuiQi Spa, Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, +971 4 426 1020
THE LATEST NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF...

THE TEXAS JAWLINE For those who weren’t born with the chiseled features of a supermodel, The Texas Jawline is a non-surgical option that gives a defined jawline without going under the knife. During this zero downtime procedure, the doctor’s expert eye will assess how much Volux filler to use, and where exactly fillers need to be placed to ensure the facial contours look perfectly sculpted and defined – a modern hallmark of beauty. THE NEFERTITI NECK LIFT Named after the Egyptian queen who was famed for her long, smooth neck and well-sculpted jawline, the Nefertiti neck lift is a new and effective non-surgical treatment that counteracts the signs of aging and gravity by redefining the jawline and softening marionette lines on the neck. Using Botox to relax the muscles along the jawline and in the neck to give a lifting effect, the upward pull from the muscles results in a younger-looking profile. Painless, with no need for anesthetic, the procedure is minimally invasive, requires no downtime, and can be combined with other treatments as a full face and neck procedure. Dr. Thomas at Euromed Clinic, Dubai, +971 4 394 5422

PLEXR NON-SURGICAL EYE LIFT A revolutionary, non-surgical procedure that helps to get rid of saggy eyelids. Plexr uses a device that zaps at your fat bags and ionises gas particles in the air between its tip and the skin to form plasma. Taking between 30-40 minutes and using local or topical anesthesia to minimise pain, results are instant, as no heat is transferred to the surrounding area. Redness and swelling will occur, but should subside a couple of days after treatment. Dr. Rory at Euromed Clinic, Dubai, +971 4 394 5422

BODY BEAUTIFIERS
From state-of-the-art technology to ancient relaxation methods with a new-age twist, summer body treatments don’t get better than this EXIMIA Brand new to Dubai, Eximia has been credited as the world’s most-wanted body-toning treatment. With no other combined machine boasting such comprehensive methods and results visible after the first session, without any negative side effects or downtime, Eximia offers a one-of-a-kind professional treatment designed to sculpt, smooth and shape the body. Combining two patented device technologies – Endolift and Laserporation– the former’s four-phase vacuum massage improves lymphatic drainage and microcirculation, as well as accelerating the removal of cleavage products of the broken adipocytes and improving the elastic properties of the skin; while the latter uses ultrasonic waves with a low frequency to destroy subcutaneous fatty tissue, which subsequently is removed by natural processes in the body. Applied together, the devices deliver a treatment that works uncompromisingly against local fat deposits, cellulite and skin sagging, making it the perfect pre-beach holiday body blitz. Results are impressive too. Body contours are tightened, skin is elasticised and smooth, and stubborn cellulite and fat deposits on legs, hips, and arms are destroyed. ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHT CEREMONY Brand new to the award-winning Amara Spa, and perfectly timed for some major pre-summer holiday pampering, The One Thousand and One Night ceremony offers two hours of unadulterated pampering in the blissful surrounds of one of the city’s most magnificent spas. An extensive body-beautifying experience using products created from regionally-sourced ingredients, after choosing your music – Mediterranean made it to this particular playlist – the ritual begins with a cleansing foot bath, followed by the application of an alum stone body scrub for a full body exfoliation. Opting for a firm pressure massage, the scrub buffs away dead skin cells and preps the skin for the array of nourishing goodies that await. With the choice of showering off the scrub in the spa suite, or outside in the perfectly private, enclosed spa garden, our decision was a given.
Standing under a glorious outdoor rain shower as the sun set over the creek, and birds chirped merrily from the branches of the privacy-making frangipani trees was quite the magical way to end our day – and we still had 90 minutes of pampering left to enjoy. With skin already feeling silky soft, next up is a white clay and honey body mask. Warmed to the perfect temperature, and slathered all over, the treatment is intensified as you are wrapped in a plastic sheet to keep you warm and let the mask work its magic. As the clay and honey soaks into the skin, lay back and enjoy a relaxing head massage – for which we chose to have a divine rose and amber-infused oil, which was worked through the hair and scalp, and induced a mini-snooze. Another rinse under that amazing outdoor rain shower, where wafts of our gorgeoussmelling hair further boosted our mood, and it was back onto the bed for the final step of the journey - a nourishing full body massage. Choosing an amber rose balm, one of three beautifullyscented balms and oils on offer - we almost immediately dozed off as our therapist kneeded away tough knots and tight muscles with a brilliant massage. Waking feeling wonderfully relaxed, and with skin that not only felt as smooth as silk, but smelled like a dream, a relaxing glass of signature tea and some dried fruits as dusk arrived completed a spectacularly relaxing treat. Pre-holiday, or just to indulge in some long-overdue TLC, your body and mind will thank you for it Dhs895, Amara Spa, Park Hyatt Dubai, +971 4 602 1660

A multi-functional hydrating and exfoliating treatment designed to have both immediate and long-term benefits, the Pro-Facial is a brand new, all-in-one treatment that targets key skincare concerns, addressing everything from acne to ageing. Using four state-of-the-art technologies; Aqua Peeling, Ion Lifting, Ultrasound and Multi-polar RF to resurface, hydrate and nourish the complexion, this highly advanced deep cleansing and lifting facial uses a vacuum suction technique similar to the one used in the Hydrafacial, which clears blocked pores whilst exfoliating and hydrating the skin. Using products from SkinCeuticals, after a double cleanse and manual exfoliation, a hand-held suction device painlessly removes blockages from the T-zone – effectively vacuuming up dead skin and plugs of accumulated oil and dirt from the pores, which dull the complexion and lead to breakouts. Next up, a radiofrequency and ultrasound treatment to lift and tighten the skin, stimulate collagen production and increase blood circulation and lymphatic flow, followed by serum application worked into the deepest layers of the skin using microcurrents, topped off with a cooling collagen-boosting mask. Expect to leave with plumped skin that looks younger, firmer, radiant and more lifted, and feels beautifully clean and hydrated. A must-add to your monthly skincare regime. Utilising two highly-skilled therapists, the 80-minute treatment comprises a simultaneous face and body ritual, using high-performance La Prairie Platinum Collection products, designed as the ultimate in skin rejuvination and offering a heightened sense of wellbeing. Beginning with facial cleansing, exfoliation and steaming to allow for extraction of any blockages, followed by a nourishing mask chosen specifically to address any skin concerns, a double dose of massage – first around the delicate eye area, using La Prairie Platinum Cream and Contour, followed by a face and neck massage using La Prairie Platinum Serum. Finally, another mask – this time the intensely soothing, calming and firming La Prairie Hydralift firming mask – followed by a bespoke moisturiser to fully hydrate the skin is applied. Whilst all of this is happening to the face, the body gets plenty of TLC too. Starting with a foot exfoliation and mask, followed by a hand and arm exfoliation and mask, all the limbs are thoroughly massaged to boost lymphatic drainage and relax stiff and aching muscles. Impossibly relaxed and rejuvinated, leave looking and feeling ten years younger. Dhs2,050, Talise Spa at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, Dubai, + 971 301 7365
TRIPLE LIFT FACIAL
NIMUE THERMAL DETOX FACIAL
There’s been been plenty of buzz surrounding the benefits of facial massage, facial rollers and face-lifting technology using remodeling facial machines, and you really need to see the benefits to believe it. The Triple Lift Facial at W Hotel The Palm’s Away Spa visibly lifts the face right there and then, making it a fantastic choice for a pre-party pick-me-up. A cold facial, there is no steaming or hot flannel involved, just lots of luxurious face stroking and massage using divine Biologique Recherché natural products. The facial massage is at the core of the treatment, and as the therapist finishes one side of my face, she stops to show me the instant results: sure enough the left side is visibly firmer and higher than the right. After 90 minutes of facial cleansing and lifting, a facial modeling machine starts work on the deeper muscles, using high-frequency current to deliver a cocktail of vitamin-infused serums deep into my skin. The results are instant and I leave the spa looking a healthier, happier, more glowing version of myself – an excellent pre- or post-party facial. Charcoal is one of beauty’s big breakthrough ingredients, appearing in everything from toothpaste to shampoo. But it’s in skincare that charcoal has really made it’s mark, thanks to its natural purifying properties. Nimue’s Thermal Detox Facial harnesses the detoxifying power of charcoal for a deep-cleansing treatment that also promotes skin hydration and radiance, making it an excellent option for congested skins, especially in the summer months, when soaring temperatures make oily skins even more prone to breakouts. Using a bubbling charcoal cleanser which deep cleans and exfoliates the skin, environmental aggressors and impurities are removed with a thermo-sensory mechanism, which creates a warming sensation that boosts blood circulation and oxygenation of the skin cells. A 4-in-1 flash treatment that ensures skin is instantly less oily, post-treatment, pores are visibly refined, lines and wrinkles less apparent, skin texture is smooth, hydrated and more even looking, and noticably more radiant. I love taking care of my skin. I see great results when I keep up with my routine, not only with using good products, but doing facials every month, followed up with laser treatments. I can’t live without a good eye cream and a hydrating serum. I love the ones from Bioeffect because they deepmoisturise so well. In the morning, I don’t wash my skin completely, I just rinse with water. I like to use a jade roller or a butterfly lifting stone to de-puff my skin, then apply my toner, a lightweight moisturiser, eye cream and sunscreen. Before bed I wash my face with a liquid soap, then do the full routine using toner, serum, moisturiser and eye cream. Every other evening, I switch to a serum moisturiser with acid. I love Neostrata, because the acid controls oiliness and helps with the texture of your skin. Using acid really changed my complexion, so I don’t hydrate every day, I switch between the two.

I never pack light when it comes to makeup. Holidays for me usually include a beach or tropical sunshine destination, so my beauty bag consists of more bronzers and neutral-coloured lipsticks. My all-time makeup favourites, like Laura Mercier’s lipliner, Estée Lauder Doublewear foundation and Caudelie Beauty Elixir, will be in there too. I’m a huge fan of hair masks to keep my hair hydrated and healthy. I love the ones by Kerastase, and I’m also really into their overnight hair serum because it doesn’t make your hair sticky or wet. You just brush it through, tie it up, and sleep in it, which is great when you’re on a plane. When you wash your hair the next day, it’s beautifully smooth. To look great after a long flight, do your skincare routine before you sleep. Once you wake up, dip a jade roller in a cup of ice, let it get really cold and then roll it all over your face to de-puff. Then apply concealer, lip tint, mascara and a little blush, and you’ll look like you’ve never travelled.

SUMMER ESCAPES Use the imposing heat as the perfect excuse to make travel dreams come true at one of these elegant destinations, both near and far
SALALAH, OMAN An easy 90-minute flight from the UAE, Salalah is an oasis amid the arid lands of the Middle East during the months of July and August when the heat hits its most unbearable. Thanks to its unique location near Yemen, the region catches the Indian Ocean monsoon, the khareef, shrouding the area in rain and turning it a lush green, filling wadis and waterfalls, creating a microclimate that has made it a goto destination for those looking for respite during the UAE’s long, hot summer. Home to myriad big-name hotels, it’s the Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara that really stands out if you’re looking for rest, relaxation or even exploration. The 136-room resort predominantly consists of pool villas which offer luxury in the form of total seclusion from other guests, encouraging lounging behind closed doors in the private pool and daybeds. For the more sociable, the main attractions are the white sand beach and elegant infinity swimming pool. If it’s too hot to go out, or a bit wet, the spa and gym are a great way to pass the time and the hotel even offers a wellness program should you wish to holiday and get healthy, where specially prepped meals and workouts will help you become your best self. If exploration is more your thing, guided walks, visits to the local souk and a Frankincense tour will enrich your days. TAKE ME TO TUSCANY A favoured haunt of silver-screen legends both past and present, Castello di Casole plays the leading role in this Italian holiday romance Words by Sophie Bew

A
rriving at Castello di Casole in the midnight rain is a cinematic moment. After winding up and down black Tuscan roads, one will eventually find themselves afoot a handsome hill. Glittering lights pave a runway that leads to a glowing castle perched on a rather steep incline – the destination unmistakable, a beacon in the night. We pull up outside the front steps and two bell boys run out eagerly with umbrellas, only to hover over me awkwardly as I empty the contents of the glove compartment, wind up various cables and reassemble the contents of bags that I’d scattered about the car since setting off from Florence’s airport 77 kilometres ago. The bell boys weave in and out, bob and bend, as they attempt and fail to keep me dry while I beaver around between front and back seats. It’s sweet, cartoonish and hapless, a scene from a Jacques Tati film. But there is nothing hapless about this formidable castle, just outside the picturesque city of Siena. Upon climbing the front steps one is embraced by the warmth of engraved teak, imposing stone fireplaces, tawny terracotta coves and luminous Volterra marble light fittings and chalices, the latter filled with tiny coloured sweets. It is at once homely and grand – a mood befitting of its legacy. Built in the 10th century, the estate stretches across 4,200 acres of olive groves, vineyards and an oak forest and, in its inception, was a village – named Querceto due to its quadrangular structure surrounding a central courtyard. Here was a cheesemaker,
Rustic and romantic, bedrooms are made for dreaming in
a winemaker, a grain store, a school, orchards, an olive press, a villa where textiles (wool, silk cocoons and mulberry leaves) were harvested and a limonaia – a large glass building in which the lemon trees were housed over the winter. Today, this hive of buildings still stands – there’s even the original chapel, now used for weddings, while a delectable spa sprawls across the chambers of the village wine cellar a few doors down. The estate has lived many lives. From the mid-17th century as a farm owned by the Bargagli family who excavated Etruscan treasures from its grounds – many of which can be found on display in that underground spa – and retained ownership for centuries. It was under the Bargagli’s reign that the farm saw a major renovation in the 18th century, resulting in the villa structure that is now Castello di Casole. Said realm lasted up until the 1950s when it was purchased by Earl Edoardo Visconti, brother to film director Luchino (the remarkable Death in Venice, The Leopard, The Damned), who brought the likes of Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale here for movie premieres during the family’s heyday at the property. In the 80s it began its life as a hotel, handed between various owners – chains and independent – until last year when Belmond, the luxury hotel group that owns Orient Express, took it over. Belmond has been sure to keep the castello’s charm intact. In fact, very little has changed on the site except a boost to the glamour via two fundamental shifts: flowers and bar food. The former comes by way of roses, a seemingly infinite amount.

Lunch with a view to match the magnificent food
Casole’s inredible spa (below) is a secret beautifying hideaway
Rambling dog roses, pom pom peony roses and immaculate cup-and-saucer-sized tea roses tumble out from earthen window sills and enormous terracotta pots on the terrazzo. On the day we check out, more still are unpacked from a truck out front – as well as heaving bougainvilleas that are squirrelled away as if part of some clandestine operation to fill each and every crevice of the property with perfumed blooms. The latter comes courtesy of Cip’s – the bar serving lunch and an informal menu adapted from the iconic Venetian landmark hotel Cipriani, also a Belmond property, which is buzzing at night in a way that the reverential gourmet restaurant Tosca does not intend to (this is a far more serious affair, where wine is decanted with the utmost deference, into Venetian Murano aerators and gourmet Italian food is proffered). Roving through the menus of either offers great delight. From Tosca’s spaghetti with sea urchin, smoked buffalo butter and nori seaweed, or the home-made Tortello stuffed with duck ragù, seasoned Stracchino cream and paprika, to Cip’s filet of beef carpaccio with Cipriani sauce or the steamed shrimp salad and hand-rolled pastas, one can run the gamut from local, uniquely devised dishes to cosmopolitan classics. The estate’s earthy olive oil and wines, both of which are served only on site, proliferate the menus too – like the Castello’s C and XII wines, spanning varietals of Petit Verdo, Sangiovese and Cabernet grapes. Every morsel steeps you further still into the surrounding countryside. A day spent at Casole is also something ripe from a movie – though the dolce vita of a Fellini film, rather than the slapstick Parisian animation of our entrance, or the darkened drama of an Italian New Wave Visconti epic. It’s picture-postcardperfect: the warm infinity pool is perched overlooking the Tuscan countryside, the same rolling greenery that can be seen from practically any window from this hilltop hotel, with every view framed by roses. Towels are immaculately rolled and pool boys in white shorts man the decks, Evian spray in hand. The suites are classically dramatic too: with grand marble fireplaces, the estate had two furnaces that produced the tiles that clad the rooms. And the vast white bathrooms, where an entire afternoon can be spent in the roll-top bath with horizon views. Or on the massage bed at Essere spa – the Etruscan Signature treatment is a very thoughtful body massage where acute attention is paid to every wonky nook and cranny. Yoga classes take place on the lawn, or in the chapel on a rainy day. With meditation, cooking and pizza classes, and watercolour painting and Italian lessons on site it can be easy to meander about the property, or through its many acres, and never leave. But there’s multitudes for the more adventurous too: truffle hunting in the woods; regional wildlife safaris; brunch with the local winemaker Varno Spinelli at his nearby farm in Casole d’Elsa; hiking; horse-back riding; bike tours. With every yogic breath, every activity, every mouthful, you immerse yourself in the landscape. And while you can certainly lose yourself at Casole, you’re sure never to forget where you are.

LIFE& STYLE Carla Conte’s spectacular Arabian Ranches home blends Canadian and Moroccan tribal influences with contemporary refinement Words by Lucy Wildman Photography by Borna Ahadi
S
ome houses have a story to tell. And, as its name suggests, Nomad House – the home of Brand Creative’s Founder and Creative Director, Carla Conte – tells a tale of travel, adventure and significant decorative reincarnation. Located in one of Dubai’s most popular residential areas, the Canadian branding specialist and her Moroccan husband Mohammed bought the house in 2017, after living happily in Dubai Marina for nine years. “We loved living in the Marina, because it’s so busy and vibrant and full of life, but we desperately wanted a home that had lots of outdoor space,” explains Carla of the couple’s decision to move. Searching in one of the more established parts of the city for a family home, there was one thing in particular that set the three bedroom property in Arabian Ranches apart from the rest. “The land,” smiles Carla. “We wanted a villa that would give us the opportunity to grow and expand, and with a 9,000 square foot plot, we got just that. Garden space, water features and a guest house are on the wish list to add to the property, but not quite yet. All in due course.” Seeing great potential in the property, the couple knew that this could be their dream house – but not without some serious tweaking. “We actually had to rip the place apart,” explains Carla. Requiring a complete renovation taking the structure down to shell and core, Carla and Mohammed wanted a home that would resonate with their Canadian and Moroccan heritage, epitomising their design sensibilities whilst
creating a space that was comfortable and liveable. “We spent four months renovating the house, and for the last trimester of my pregancy, I was on the construction site daily,” revealed Carla of the build project. Creating an open plan layout on the ground floor to optimise space, allowing for plenty of natural light throughout the day, original archways were removed and replaced with post and beam structures in the dining area for a clean aesthetic. With comfort and practicality at the forefront of their minds, plenty of storage space was incorporated into the design to compliment the needs of a growing young family whilst maintaining a refined design perspective. Building work on the villa was finally completed just a month after the couple’s son Zayn was born, and Carla couldn’t have been happier with how the renovation worked out. “It was everything we wanted

it to be,” she explains, as we sit drinking coffee on her custom-made, low-level charcoal grey sofa. “Doing the job I do every day, it was easy to visualise what I wanted, which I think many people struggle with – trying to make a home so perfect, and focusing on trends. I actually totally dismissed trends in this design, as the house is completely personal to us. I stuck to a concept, and saw it through without changing my mind. But the fact that this is what I actually do for a living definitely helped!” A monochrome colour palette punctuated by striking ethnic patterns and tactile furnishings brings character to the space without distracting from the modern aesthetic of the structure. “Black, white and loads of moody greys make it bold, yet it evokes a timeless style,” says Carla. “I had fun with feature textured walls, and pops of colour in accessories. I’m not afraid of colour, but

Dubbed ‘The Guardians’, the vintage photographs of a Canadian First Nations man and a Moroccan Berber woman dominate the living room
after a day of working on projects that are every colour of the rainbow, I enjoy coming home to this neutral space.” Citing the feel of their home as contemporary tribal, Carla wanted a house that was both relaxing, yet gallery-like, without the sterile, white walls. “Our furniture is a mixture of Scandinavian mid-century modern classics, Moroccan souk finds and customdesigned items that were scaled and finished to suit our needs as a family,” explains Carla. And while there were many cherished and authentic artefacts acquired over the years that needed to be incorporated into the house, such as the ornamental lanterns snapped up on a shopping trip to Marrakech, the vintage Italian trunks gifted to Carla by her mother when she left Canada in 2006, and the feathered sculptures created by an artist she met in New York, it was two vintage artworks with a particularly poignant meaning to the family that acted as the focal point of how their home’s interior decoration would evolve. “We call them ‘The Guardians,’” laughs Carla, nodding towards the two huge black and white
The openplan living and dining room is effortlessly eclectic; a chrome and glass dining table sits atop a traditional Persian rug – one of the first things Carla bought when she arrived in Dubai – while a playful Seletti monkey light illuminates a classic wire Eames chair.

photographic canvases of a Canadian First Nations Man and a Moroccan Berber women that hang above the sofa in the living room. “I had two photographs that I sourced in Fez and Toronto from museum archives, and had them reprinted, larger than life, to watch over us as we built our new life here in Dubai,” she says. “Because they are from the countries in which both my husband and I were raised, they are totally significant to us. Their eyes tell stories of lives welllived. They have soul.” The tribal aesthetic inspired by the clothing they wear in the photographs created a base for the house’s decoration concept, with leather, metal, embroideries and feathers – which Carla collects – featuring throughout. “I find feathers everywhere,” laughs Carla. “That, or they’re following me!” Art is dotted all over the house, with photographs the couple took on their travels displayed on a gallery wall in the hallway, archive fashion prints taken by Mohammed’s father in Marrakech in 1965 hanging in the master bedroom ensuite, and a custom-made illuminated Kufic calligraphy piece with the phrase “Where there is peace there is love – where there is love, there is peace” hanging over the dining table. classics from Hans Wegner, Bertoia and Eames can be found as highlights throughout the house, but Carla maintains that there’s no ‘Do not touch’ mentality to the items in her home. “I have a two-year-old boy, and two very adventurous cats, how could there be?” she laughs. “At some point, everything is going to get covered in kid’s sticky hand prints or cat hair, so there’s no point being precious about things. More importantly, this place is not a museum – it’s our home. And I want people to feel completely relaxed and at ease when they come here. That’s what a home should feel like.” With Carla’s down-to-earth attitude central to the feel of the house, there’s no stuffiness or formality to the space, despite it’s

undeniable wow-factor. “The fact is that we just really enjoy living in this house, so we want everyone who visits to feel the same.” Next on the work agenda is the garden – and Carla’s plan for her outdoor space is just as sophisticated as the indoors. “Yves Saint Laurent had a story that speaks volumes to me,” she reveals. “He was a multi-disciplinary creative which I adore – fashion, illustration, architecture, and landscape – for him, the creative process was the same in any field. His home in Marrakech, Jardin Majorelle, inspires me immensely. His saturated use of colour and careful curation of his garden is exactly what I want to channel here in our own garden. I can’t wait to get started.”
