Molly’s news...
Let them eat steak! Derby GP and mum of two, Susie Bayley, has launched a brand new initiative to improve the quality and choice on children’s menus.
6
Susie is the founder of betterchildrensmenus.com: an online campaign to kick start restaurants, pubs and cafes to serve a better standard of kid’s food, introduce more variety and have healthier options for our little ones. The campaign promotes progressive eateries, whilst acting as a community for like-minded parents. As an inner city GP, Susie is mindful of the growing prevalence of childhood obesity and associated long-term consequences. Having always been passionate about food and health, Susie became disillusioned when taking her young family out for meals. Like many parents she felt the choice for children was narrow, the standard poor. As adults enjoy a food revolution, with an increase in gastropubs, fine-dining and international restaurants, children’s food appears to be ignored. In many eateries there is a woeful lack of inspiration and

One mum’s campaign to make children’s menus better quality, with menus stuck in the 1980s: a fried offering served with the ubiquitous servings of chips and peas. For these reasons betterchildrensmenus.com was founded, to encourage restaurants (pubs/cafes) to take a second look at their menus and see if they could do better.
The Pledge: Better Children’s Menus restaurants, pubs and cafes are committed to the following on their children’s menus: Better choice: An increase in the breadth of child menus. Where possible, offering smaller portions of adult dishes (particularly where special dietary requirements exist e.g. dairy allergy/coeliac disease). Better ingredients: Using fresh produce and avoiding processed food with additives, preservatives and excess salt. Better for them: Having some dishes which are healthier options.
Betterchildrensmenus.com already has over 140 venues who have signed the pledge. Please help us to get the word out there and give parents and their children a much better experience when eating-out. When asked why they had joined the campaign, Derby’s reigning Restaurant of the Year, Restaurant Zest said: “We believe children should be able to enjoy ‘adult’ menus from an early age, we offer smaller versions of the dishes on our menus at a reduced price and are happy to accommodate requests where we’re able”.

UK Charity to benefit from Youth Academy fundraising Caring Matters Now - a UK charity that provides support to those affected by Congenital Melanocytic Naevi (CMN) – is set to benefit from the fundraising efforts of Lincoln City Football Club’s Youth Academy.
The charity, established in 1998, was announced as the Youth Academy’s official Charity Partner until the end of the 2014/15 season following an online vote via the academy’s Future Imps Fund website. CMN is a dark brown mole present at birth which can be very large and numerous. CMN syndrome is the association of these moles with neurological problems including brain tumours and an increased risk of malignant melanoma (skin cancer). The charity provides information, advice and personal support and reaches out to all those affected by CMN. Caring Matters Now hosts family support days across the UK, produces and distributes a number of informative resource materials, raises awareness through various sources and provides a team of regional support contacts. It is also a substantial funding source for research at Great Ormond Street Hospital and has recently established that CMN syndrome is caused by a gene mutation so it is now possible to research treatments for the first time. Speaking on behalf of the charity, Jodi Whitehouse, Caring Matters Now’s Chief
Executive, said “We at Caring Matters Now are absolutely delighted to have been selected and very much look forward to working in partnership with Lincoln City Football Club’s Youth Academy in raising funds for the charity and also in raising awareness of Congenital Melanocytic Naevus, a rare disfiguring and potentially lifethreatening condition. “As such a small charity we embrace opportunities such as this and would like to thank LCFC Academy and everyone who voted for us. The funding we receive will make such a difference to the lives of those affected by CMN.” Head of Youth at Lincoln City, Damian Froggatt said “Caring Matters Now is a littleknown charity which works exceptionally hard to support those born with CMN. We wanted to show that while the Academy relies heavily on sponsorship and financial support from the local community, we also want to actively give something back to those who are less fortunate. Hopefully we’ll be able to help in some small way to raise the profile of this very worthwhile cause.” The Youth Academy will be supporting Caring Matters Now’s fundraising efforts throughout the season and has already announced that 5% of all 100 Club Membership funds will be donated to its charity partner. The academy’s 100 Club is just one of many initiatives under the Future Imps Fund banner designed to attract much needed sponsorship and investment into sustaining the football club’s Youth Academy, which no longer receives

Canwick Park Golf Club
Why golf?!!
is my belief that all children be given the “ Itopportunity to enjoy as many sports as possible. ” George Wilkinson, Junior Organiser
Golf is a sport that teaches youngsters and adults alike some very important life skills, it is a sport that can be played very well by an 8 year old as well as an 80 year old whether male or female, there are no barriers in golf. As well as learning how to play, youngsters will take away a wealth of knowledge. Etiquette, or how to behave on the golf course, in the club and the respect shown to others and to yourself are all skills that follow a young person, for the rest of their lives. By playing with all groups beginners soon learn new skills which encourages all players to be respectful, polite, show good manners and to play fair. These skills are for life and can be used in everyday situations. Our golf taster sessions at Canwick Park Golf Club will give youngsters the opportunity to
At Canwick Park Golf Club we encourage junior golf and should a youngster decide to take up the sport we will encourage that individual to play golf at a level they are comfortable with. “have a go” at a sport they may otherwise have overlooked, (who knows there may be the next Rory Mcilroy or Alex Peters among them). The day will be about youngsters having fun with approximately 4 hours of golf with a break for lunch sandwiched in the middle. The afternoon session will see some group competitions and skill challenges. At the end an assessment would be made on each youngster with a recommendation being made to the parents as to the next step. All equipment will be supplied by Canwick Park Golf Club. We recommend good footwear (trainers are acceptable). Warm clothing with a waterproof jacket preferred and trousers/jeans for girls.

Drill Hall EASTIVAL 2014
- Lincoln Children’s Arts Festival For the first time Lincoln’s three main arts venues have come together to present a fabulous week-long festival of events and activities in the run up to Easter.
From Tuesday 8 to Wednesday 16 April, Lincoln Drill Hall, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre & The Collection are offering a packed Easter hamper of theatre, dancing, live music, arts & crafts, films, dressing up and much more! Theatre highlights include Hiccup Theatre’s ‘Pinocchio’ and ‘Meeting Mr Boom’, an out of this world live music and dance show by Darren Ellis and Ronen Kozokara, both at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, while Lincoln Drill Hall presents Tutti Frutti’s ‘Monday’s Child’, an imaginative dream-like and funny
story with live music and dance that explores how we learn. The Vikings invade The Collection for a family fun day and story session - or become a pirate at Lincoln Drill Hall with more storytelling plus a drama and making workshop. You can also travel ‘Round the World with Joseph Banks’ at The Collection to find out more about how plants have been used in history. If you love music then the Drill Hall is the place to be, with a family concert and exploration of classical music by The Busch Ensemble, a Family Folk Day & Barn Dance, workshops with Pete the Music Man and the Diddy Disco toddler dance party. Movie fans just need to bring along the popcorn for the free family films that The Collection are screening throughout Eastival. And also through the festival, take part in the Great Easter Egg Challenge, hunting for hidden eggs at all three venues to claim a prize! LPAC
Full of inspiration... Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is a vibrant & inspiring place for children to visit and experience theatre. The theatre has become well established in the city as a great place for families to take children of all ages. This season they have teamed up with their neighbouring arts venues, Lincoln Drill Hall and The Collection, to present a fabulous week of arts events and activities for children across the city, bringing together some of the very best theatre, dance, workshops, films and music available for children and families. Eastival runs from Tuesday 8th right through to Wednesday 16th April 2014. The contribution to Eastival from Lincoln Performing Arts Centre includes creative play and storytelling for the Under 5s with Lil’Pacs on Friday 11th, inflatable fun on Monday 14th with Meeting Mr Boom, and a reimagined adventure with Pinocchio on Wednesday 16th April. There’s plenty to choose from, with something to suit children of all ages. This is the first year that Eastival has taken place. Eastival also features an Easter Egg challenge across all three sites. There are 10 Easter eggs hidden for children to find. You can start your challenge at any of the three venues and can use the whole week to complete it. It’s free to take part, and all you have to do is find the eggs, complete the picture challenge and claim your reward from any one of the three venues.
If you’re still looking for fun things to do with the kids after Easter then you’ll find quality family entertainment all year round at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre. Tickets are kept as affordable as possible, with Family Tickets and advanced booking discounts for many family shows. There have been lots of big TV stars from your favourite children’s shows like Milkshake Live, Postman Pat and Bananas in Pyjamas. You can never plan too far ahead! If you enjoyed last year’s sell-out Christmas production, then you’ll not be disappointed by Alice’s Adventures in Winter Wonderland. It’s set to be just as wonderful and brimming with Christmas magic. It makes sense to book early, many families and schools have already booked for this year, and you won’t want to miss out.

Make a show of your talent... There’s no business like show business, so they say, and at New Youth Theatre you can see why. With fabulous shows like Hairspray, Annie, Grease and many more, young people from Lincolnshire get their chance to tread the boards and see what show business is really about. If you’re passionate about starring in your very own production and learning the craft of theatre, then here is your chance. Sessions available for young people aged 3-5, 6-11 and 9-16 years. New Youth Theatre, established in 2001, has gone from strength to strength; they have numerous successful franchised centres in several counties. The founders themselves still teach 450 children aged 3-16 each week and put on shows three times a year at local Theatres. Rachel Ashworth – Jerem, Director/ Choreographer of NYT said, “Some children in our groups want to forge a career in the arts whilst others want a hobby, make new friends, build confidence and have a great time in a fun and safe environment. We have now been
established for over 12 years, students past and present have, or are performing, in the West End and the film industry”. New Youth Theatre also offer Holiday Camps, School Workshops and LAMDA acting classes too. So whether it’s a fun time or a career in show business, New Youth Theatre is the place to be. School transitions
Are your children ready to move up? It’s never too soon to start thinking about preparing your child for school...
Transitions are a big part of life for all young children, from when they are first left with an adult other than their mother or father, to when they start at primary school. All Early Years settings work towards children leaving and moving into school and during pre-school sessions steps will be taken over many months to help with this. As a parent, you may well be concerned about the step up into ‘big’ school, but the chances are, you will be much more worried than your child! There are many things that you can do to help prepare your child, which will support the things that they do at nursery. The main theme in preparing for school is one of developing independence. In school the ratio of adults to children is much less, so your child needs to be able to carry out some basic tasks him or herself. Encourage them to put on their

Putting on shoes and boots is also an important skill – just imagine the chaos that can ensue when getting changed for PE, with 30 children all trying to put on their own games kit? Trips to the toilet can be a minefield at school and many parents are surprised by the unwillingness of school staff to help with toileting. It may be easy for your child to sit and wait for you to assist at home, but try and encourage independence and build good habits of hand washing afterwards. At nursery we try and take some of the unknown out of moving into school, so we may visit a local primary school and take photos of the different areas, so we can talk to children about what happens in each area. We also have a transition puppet, called Louis, whose big brother goes to school, so Louis can talk to the children about what his brother gets up to. You might like to get hold of an old set of school uniform from the school your child will be going to, and let them use it for dressing up in – it all helps to breed familiarity. Many schools offer visit days for new pupils during the summer term before they start and these are a really useful way of building excitement with your child and making it all more familiar before they start. Many schools require children to take a packed lunch, so use every opportunity to ‘practice’ with a packed lunch in the run up to school starting. Often as parents we don’t remember that it can be tricky for small children to open a particular container, to peel a tangerine or open a packet of crisps. Experiment while your child is with you, to see whether you need to open a pack and put a clip on, or peel a piece of fruit and wrap it in film. Also, many schools will encourage children to eat a substantial amount of the lunch you send in, so do make sure you are realistic about what they can manage – especially when they want to go and play with friends after lunch. issue 10 • Easter 2014

If you want any more tips or suggestions, do chat to your child’s nursery team, as they do this every year and may know what worked well with other families. Most of all, remember it is supposed to be fun for your child, so always talk positively about starting school and what an adventure it will be – whatever your own experiences may have been!

National Citizen Service
Skills & challenges in community spirit A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young people is on offer in Newark and Sherwood. Local teenagers are being offered a chance to sign up to a thrilling programme of outdoor challenges and community work while building on their skills for the future. Newark and Sherwood District Council have teamed up with the National Citizen Service (NCS) to help young people - aged 16 and 17 - boost their CV while having a fantastic time and making new friends. It is a three-part programme, taking place during the school holidays, focusing on skills for education, work and life including: • An outward-bound residential - a stay in the Peak District or Staffordshire Moorlands featuring exciting outdoor challenges such as abseiling, canoeing and caving • Skills workshops - working with local businesses and charities to develop employability and entrepreneurial skills, and covering community issues such as homelessness or crime. • Community project - teams plan and deliver their own community project, based on a charity or project of their choice. This can be anything from fundraising for a local charity, setting up a youth project or redecorating a community centre. It costs just £20 for our Easter or autumn programmes, or £40 for our summer programme - great value when you know the government pays more than £1,200 for each young person to go on NCS.
