Welcome... If you’ve been keeping an eye on our website over the last few weeks you’ll know that Molly’s Guide had a great summer from being a guest at the Lincolnshire School Games and becoming a scientist for the day at the University of Lincoln to finding out more about family events such as the Robin Hood Festival and the inaugural East Midlands Chilli Festival. And we certainly had an abundance of the scorching paddling pool weather we were hoping for in the last issue. But, whilst our back to school edition sees us move into the autumn season, there’s still plenty of reasons to get outdoors as the Woodland Trust’s Nature Detective (p.14), Linwood Warren’s High Ropes Adventure (p.16) and LN6 Bikes (p.25) prove. I have to admit that I don’t need much selling on the season it being my favourite time of the year. I love the colours and the scent in the air at dusk – and the fact that my husband, my son and I all celebrate our birthdays in the next two months along with our wedding anniversary and that we’re big fans of Hallowe’en probably has a lot to do with it too. Here’s hoping you have a lot to celebrate this season too – and don’t forget to tell us all about it by emailing karen@mollysguide.co.uk

Woodland Trust’s Nature Detectives

Have you twigged on yet? As autumn begins, the cold weather and fallen leaves make it tempting to stay indoors - but the Woodland Trust is encouraging children, parents and schools to venture outside and enjoy all this exciting season has to offer. The Woodland Trust’s Nature Detectives website aims to help children get in touch with nature. For 10 years, Nature Detectives has hosted fun activities for children, encouraging them to explore local woods. It already provides hundreds of free ideas for families in Lincolnshire, where the Trust is based, and beyond, and has become increasingly popular with schools and community groups too. Being a Nature Detective is all about having fun in the great outdoors and learning more about wildlife. To become one, you can start exploring the Nature Detectives website to find out what free things you can do. Or, to get weekly challenges sent to your email, plus your own set of stickers, posters and an activity pack you can join the official Nature Detectives CLUB. There’s a wide range of autumn activities currently on offer, designed with crunchy leaves and frosty mornings in mind. Some of the most popular ones include how to create a leaf storm, hunting for mini beasts and making elf houses from fallen

Create your own woodland adventure... Where do you think a woodland elf might like to live? When you’ve found a suitable place create a home for them. Look for woodland objects to help you create the doorway, or to build the whole house with. You could even find objects for inside the home, or create a garden.

twigs and leaves. There are even some special, spooky things to do when Halloween comes around; making woodland potions and a witches broom included!

Woodland potions

There’s no need for nature detectives to travel far in their adventures; fun can be had in your local park or garden, and Lincolnshire has lots of local woods to explore, including: • Old Wood, near Skellingthorpe, is well known for its bright flashes of autumn colour, and is the perfect place for spotting owls and deer.

• Wragby Woods are an exciting collection of smaller woods, scattered with old, medieval buildings just waiting to be discovered. Be sure to take some wellies, though, as it can get boggy!

Autumn is also the tree planting season, and getting stuck in the mud is great fun. The Trust offers free tree packs to community groups across the UK and schools are immediately eligible for a small pack of 30 trees, though packs of 105 and 420 are also available and come in a variety of themes. issue 13 • Autumn 2014

www.mollysguide.co.uk

Take a beaker or small bowl out on your adventure. Add a splash of water and find a special stick for stirring. As you explore the wood, gather bits and pieces that catch your eye - a brightly coloured leaf, a fluffy feather, a shiny berry, some glistening grass...

• Sibsey Wood, just 20 minutes from the centre of Lincoln was planted in the year 2000. It’s got lots of winding paths– great for exploring during bike rides.

Plus, the fun doesn’t have you stop when you enter the classroom. The Green Tree Schools Award helps teachers encourage outdoor learning through green activities. Each activity earns points, and classes will receive a certificate of achievement and a commemorative plaque when they complete the gold award.

If you wander down to the woods today, you’ll find heaps of ingredients perfect for a woodland potion...

Can you find scented items to add to your potion too, like pine needles? Make up a rhyme about each new ingredient you add, like this one: ‘Next a fallen acorn goes in, big trees from this tiny thing!’ When you’ve mashed everything up, find a special spot to pour out your potion and make a wish!

High Ropes Adventure

The high wire forest adventure... Operating for over 20 years, High Ropes Adventure offers one of the largest ropes courses in Lincolnshire, with challenging and exciting activities for all ages. Situated in the beautiful woodland of Linwood Warren near Market Rasen, we offer you the chance for a unique and adventurous day out in the trees.

The company was founded in 1994 by Simon and Jon Hopkinson. With over 40 years of experience between them working with scout organisations and building huge pioneering towers we began designing and constructing our own ropes courses. Over the years we have developed three courses ranging from our Mini through to our Main course, giving all our customers the opportunity to get involved whatever their ability or age. Groups are looked after by their own instructor who will help and guide them through all the activities. Each course comes with its own set of challenges. The ‘Mini’ course is perfect for children 6 and over. It has bridges, spiders web, a jump, swinging poles and ropes bridges. Adults can join in too if they’re not too scared of heights! Then we have the ‘High’ course, 12 feet high, bridges, balancing beams and the wobbly multivine to test those who are 11 and older

and haven’t had any experience before. Finally, we have the ‘Main’ course for those 13 and older, 25 feet high, multiple difficult challenges, multiple jumps, high wires, multi-vines, spider web and the ultimate postman’s walk! Complementing our ropes courses we also have a 100 metre zip wire with speeds of up to 30mph, a telegraph pole and trapeze jump and finally we have a 36 foot pioneering tower to climb. We also offer a prize of £50 if anyone can complete the challenge at the top of the tower, 16 ‘Gladiator’ style rings. We’re often asked if people need to be fit to do our course, well we don’t think so, if you break into a sweat walking up stairs, then you’ll break into a sweat at the ropes course. It’s a great workout and a great way to spend a few hours outdoors in our beautiful woodland. Our archery has become increasingly popular with children and adults able to learn how to shoot an arrow safely and correctly. Each group has their own competition with a prize to whomever can get the highest score! Whatever the occasion, a family day out, birthday party, school or college trip, at High Ropes Adventure we cater for all. Whether it be one person or a group of 50 we tailor each group so they have as much fun as possible. We also have accommodation, camping, a 9 acre woodland site, BBQ hire, a fully equipped catering kitchen, orienteering and much more. always tell “usThetheychildren want to stay and they often come back year after year.”

Fun in the farmyard classroom No sooner do children have their feet back under their desks than teachers are looking for ways to take them back out of the classroom again! But that’s because it’s widely recognised that school trips and learning outside the classroom can benefit pupils in many different ways, building engagement with their communities, giving the chance to develop new skills and providing support for subjects that can be difficult to cover in the classroom.

and the weather plays an important part in anything we do,” says Kay.

It’s a subject that Rand Farm Park’s Kay Waring certainly doesn’t need tutoring in.

“We believe that the sort of day trips and longer breaks we offer give children a wider understanding of their world and why they need to look after it. They often see things that our modern lifestyles, with their time and safety concerns, don’t allow for when we just go from the car to school and back in the car again.”

“We originally started offering residential courses for schools in 2005 with everyone sleeping in tents. There’s still the option to camp but since then we’ve built a dormitory that sleeps up to 32 children and five staff as after all this is England

From the arrival of baby lambs in spring through to sheep shearing and wool spinning in summer to autumn’s fruit and vegetable harvest and Santa Sleepovers in December, the dormitory option has made residential visits to Rand Farm a year-round

option with activities not only adapted for the changing seasons but also the changing curriculum. “Our courses can be tailor made to meet different topics within the National Curriculum,” explains Kay. “There’s a strong emphasis on food technology and growing your own which obviously we can cater for but we also incorporate many other areas too. “We can look at evolution easily through discussing how cattle have been bred for dairy or beef, we cover habitats, science, geography, maths and English skills. We even include PE as you have to be able to stand on one leg to wash your wellies!” With the appointment of an education manager (a former teacher) earlier this year, the farm’s offering goes from strength to strength and includes trips to other farms and environmental sites. “We take children out to arable, dairy and cheese commercial farms, into the woods to identify native British trees and to a swimming pool. Going from a wheat field to a windmill children can see the whole process finishing it off themselves by coming back to the farm to make cookies or a crumble,” says Kay. “Picking berries is even something children are less likely to do now supermarkets stock all fruit all year round but we don’t just pick fruit, we also milk cows and then make pavlova with it all.

“Teachers often tell us that the less academic children get the most out of such hands on experiences but they are always amazed at how everyone’s social skills develop through their short break with us and see the social and vocational benefits of the trips as well as the academic ones.”

But, of course, the final verdict should be from the children themselves. “They go home and tell their parents they want to make butter at home or continue cooking and we often hear that direct from the parents too when their children ask them to come back to the farm for a family visit.”

School uniforms

Shop smart for school uniforms What tactic do you employ when it comes to buying your children’s school uniform? Are you ridiculously organised, or do you opt for a last-minute, seatof-your-pants dash? As mum-oftwo Sam Curtis has discovered, there’s pros and cons with both…

26

tel: 01522 535068

There’s a couple of ways to tackle the task of uniform shopping for the new term. You can opt to get it over and done with as soon as the children break up, or cut it fine and wait until the last weekend of the holidays. Either way, it’s a bit like cleaning gutters - not particularly enjoyable but a necessary evil. If you took the first option, hats off to you for being so very organised, and for having children who are happy to think about going back to school the second the classroom doors snap shut.

My guess is you had the pick of the cardigans, pinafores, trousers and shirts. I imagine you found what you were looking for straight away, in all the right sizes. The only downside to this approach is the effect six weeks of sunshine, swimming lessons and a diet of Haribos can have on kids. You can find your best intentions scuppered by a rapid growth-spurt come September. I am convinced children shoot up an inch in stature and gain a year’s worth of attitude in just six weeks. So, as you potter about getting breakfast ready on the first morning of the new academic year, be prepared for shouts of, “Mum! Help!” as your offspring attempt to squeeze themselves into their squeaky, new clothing which fitted them in July. That below-the-knee pinafore dress resembles something a St Trinian girl would wear and your son’s trousers, the ones you painstakingly Wonderwebbed two weeks ago, are now halfmast above his shiny shoes. (A note on shoes - the toes will be scuffed by the end of the first day, just accept it). Never mind, you will pack them off to school wearing whatever fits best and spend the rest of the day unstitching name labels and finding the till receipt, so you can return the rest of the unworn items and swap them for the next size up.

when you still have all those labels to sew in and book bags and lunchboxes to buy. The best option, by far, is to make sure your little lamb goes to school this term and befriends a well-turned out youngster of the same sex in the year above them, preferably an only child who has a mum with a charitable/generous nature. That way, when she is cleaning out her child’s closet next July to make way for the annual uniform upgrade, you and your little cherub are the first people she thinks to offer all those pristine hand-me-downs to.

Leaving it until the last minute to go school uniform shopping with your brood is an equally risky tactic. Granted, the chance of everything fitting is more likely, but will you be able to find the garments you (and more importantly, your children) like in the right size? Probably not, at least not without a major trawl around the high street, which is the last thing you want to be doing

When is private tuition the right next step? It’s probably a question that has been in the back of your mind for some time but deciding to contact a private tutor for additional support in English and Maths for your child can be a big decision. Here are a few of the reasons why speaking to your local Kip McGrath Education Centre may be the right next step – both for you and your child. In need of extra support? It’s a fact that teachers do an amazing job, but the amount of time they have available to spend with each child in their class is inevitably limited. English and Maths are core subjects that influence the full spectrum of curriculum learning. Consider whether your child needs short or long term support to achieve the right level for their age or the GCSE grade they need to improve their options later on.

Not achieving their potential? Do you feel that your child isn’t being stretched as far as their capabilities could take them? Kip McGrath’s tutors are all qualified teachers who will motivate your child to be the best they can be, while making friends and having fun in a relaxed learning environment. Lacking confidence in their abilities?

As a parent or carer of a school-aged child, you have no doubt noticed school dinners are being frequently talked about in the news. email: info@mollysguide.co.uk

issue 13 • Autumn 2014

School meals are receiving the highest level of prominence since Jamie Oliver’s school dinner campaign in 2005 as a result of the publication of the School Food Plan, an independent review into school food commissioning by the Department for Education. The government are now implementing a number of key recommendations from the Plan, the most well-known being universal free school meals for infants which begins in September. The Food for Life Partnership (FFLP), a national school award scheme which supports schools to serve healthy, freshly prepared lunches and provide pupils with wider food education, is supporting this initiative by organising ‘What Works Well’ visits. These give schools experiencing challenges around particular areas of implementing universal infant free school meals, the opportunity to visit others who have overcome similar issues and gather practical advice and solutions. If you think your school could benefit from one of these visits, or you are doing good work around school food and could host a visit (host schools can earn £100 per school that visits them) further details can be found on FFLP website www.foodforlife.org. uk/whatworkswell

Health Lincolnshire to work with schools and caterers across the county. Since March 2012, Kate Shaw, Lincolnshire’s Local Programme Manager, has been supporting schools as they work through their bronze, silver and gold Food for Life Partnership awards. These awards make lunchtimes a positive feature of the day, and reward schools with a good food culture, supporting them to improve food quality and food education and encouraging them to invite parents and friends into schools more often. It is free to enrol with FFLP and staff can attend free training courses around teaching practical cooking and growing and arranging farm visits. Kate has recently been joined by ex-school teacher Julia Newton.

Another action set out by the School Food Plan is to support schools to increase take up in junior, middle and secondary schools whose current take up is below average. If you are an eligible school in the Midlands, North or London regions you can sign up for a package of support worth over £2,000 delivered by the Food for Life Partnership. The package includes four training events for school leaders, caterers and school cooks, a bespoke action plan and support from an expert team based on your region. The journey to ‘outstanding’ is in full flow at The Newark Academy

A recent OFSTED visit highlighted the improvements being made (particularly in the leadership of the school, and the Sixth Form) and we continue to relentlessly pursue the best outcomes for all students that attend our school each and every day. On the horizon is our new school building. We are delighted to be able to share initial plans for something we truly believe can help to transform education in Newark and become a hub for our local community. Planning has now reached advanced stages with our partners, Kier, ahead of building commencing in November 2016. The new building is scheduled to open in January 2016. Any students currently in year 6 will potentially experience almost 7 years in this modern, state-of-the-art learning environment.

The Newark Academy

to technology whenever required. Design and Technology will contain excellent CAD/CAM facilities and English and Maths classrooms will be designed with student achievement the primary concern. Drama will be able to make use of a modern studio and auditorium whilst maximum space will be made available for budding musicians to practice. All classrooms will be bright and airy to ensure all students are comfortable and ‘Ready to learn’ each and every day. Rooms will be larger than the standard sized classrooms often associated with typical new school buildings and there will be large external courtyards built into the design to ensure learning isn’t restricted to the classroom. We quite simply cannot wait for the local community to experience our new school building and state of the art facilities.

There will be excellent sporting facilities; a brand new modern sports complex with a large sports hall, activity studio and fitness studio, along with many outdoor sports pitches and a modern MUGA (multi-usegames-area). Modern technology will be at the forefront of The Newark Academy and there will be a total of 9 IT learning areas throughout the school, ensuring all students have access issue 13 • Autumn 2014

Shopping in Lincoln

City shoppers offered greater choice... Lincoln’s ever-changing retail and business offering has had a few additions and changes of late that may appeal to parents and children in particular. With new store openings and premises moves afoot, Molly’s Guide is looking forward to going shopping! HOMESENSE Homeware-for-less retailer HomeSense opened its 29th store in the UK in Lincoln’s Tritton Retail Park on Thursday, August 28th. Closely following the opening of Oak Furnitureland, which also occupies part of the former Comet store, HomeSense offers shoppers 18,249 sq ft of branded homeware at up to 60% less than the RRP. The new store certainly seemed to be attracting the crowds when Molly’s Guide dropped in on its opening day but its spacious and well thought out layout meant we could still navigate a stroller, toddler and our own aspirational browsing need through the two floors of electic interior decor items. With a dedicated children’s area featuring a striking teepee, a lovely range of storage/gift boxes, lots of toys and books and mini furniture pieces just right for little ones, there’s plenty for parents to take a look at here. Visit www.homesense.com for further information.

LUCY LOCKET Digital retailing is not only working its magic for a city company, it also spells an exciting expansion move. Lincoln-based chartered surveyor Banks Long & Co has leased premises at the Firth Road Business Centre to Fairy Glam Ltd – better known to many as Lucy Locket. The homegrown company sells an array of children’s partywear, magic wands, masks and other accessories and is confident that this is a dream move which will put it on course for further success. Relocating from Wavell Drive on the city’s Allenby Road Industrial Estate Lucy Locket chief executive Paul Edwick and his wife, creative director Sarah Edwick who started the firm 20 years ago, are in positive mood as the business forges ahead to recover its pre-recession turnover. “We have been closely watching retailing trends. The growth in internet

36

tel: 01522 535068

sales encouraged us to seriously consider pushing the online side of our business two years ago. Today more than 50 per cent of sales are internet-related,” said Paul. “However, we will remain both a “clicks and bricks” business – as a traditional supplier to prestigious customers such as Harrods, Hamleys, Waitrose and LegoLand. That side remains very important to us. “Our new premises are much bigger, open plan and also include a meeting room. They will allow our nine-strong team much more space in which to handle both online and offline sales and do their creative thinking. The Firth Road site is also central and secure.” Exports to the EU, including Germany and France, account for more than 50 per cent of sales and Lucy Locket is keen to make inroads into Italy and Spain. “With our expansion, we are hoping to take on one new person every six months. We already employ someone who can speak German, French

and Spanish, but we need more help in this area so, more immediately, we are keen to hear from languages students who would like to get some experience under their belts,” added Paul. Digital marketing and PR officer Bryony Soord is the firm’s newest recruit and she is enthusiastic about the key role she is playing in spreading the word about Lucy Locket. “We have a huge range of products. All have been hand-finished and we have safe-fastening outfits for the under-threes, as well as the luxury dressing-up outfits for children up to the age of eight,” said Bryony. “One of the things I am concentrating on is creating a safe online network, where parents, teachers and other people involved in dealing with children can share their thoughts on all sorts of issues.” For further info visit www.lucylocket.com

Ruddocks of Lincoln

Our workshops are back and are ‘supercalifragilish cxbealadociuos’ (a quote from the Decopatch Boxes Workshop)

After months of discussion, preparation and promotion the day arrived – our first children’s workshop! After several successful adult workshops (including Beginners Crochet) today was the day seven children would learn Binka Sewing. The children came bouncing up the stairs and found their seats. After sketching out a rough pattern, they received a piece of Binka (6 count aida) each, chose their thread colour, grabbed a plastic needle and off they went. Sounds of laughter and enjoyment drifted across the corridor throughout the workshop, only pausing for juice and biscuits! By the end, each child came away with a big grin and a great start on their design. The parents seemed pleased and the feedback we later received included ‘Great set up. Brilliant tutor – really enjoyed it and learned a lot.’ Phew! All our work and wondering was starting to pay off!

Several workshops later (both children’s and adult) and it was time for our ever popular and exciting Mod Roc Volcano Making. Paint – CHECK, Mod Roc – CHECK, lunch ordered – CHECK (freshly prepared by Henry’s Tea Room) and we were (nervously) ready. We had a full class of 10 booked onto this one and the room was buzzing with children (and some rather excited parents!). Bases cut out, bottles in place, newspaper and mod roc applied and then the messy part – painting it! Seeing all the finished volcanoes was great, each one so different and yet so realistic! Again the feedback was great – ‘Fantastic’, ‘He loved it, so much so he has been booked into more classes.’ We are already dreaming up ideas for new and creative workshops for next year (October Half Term workshops have already been released – Halloween Masks for the younger ones and Masquerade Masks for the older ones – visit www.ruddocksoflincoln.co.uk for more information & to book). And don’t worry, we will be running the popular ones again - we have already had requests to repeat the Volcano workshop! If you have any requests/suggestions please do get in touch. We hope to bring you more exciting details and news in the next issue!

Family tradition

Are you ready to hide behind your sofa? How many times do you hear parents tell their children “when I was your age, everything was so different”? Everyone’s experiences vary I suppose, but I’m always finding happy parallels between my childhood and that of my own children. I looked forward to weekend trips to town with my dad, for instance. I was always allowed to pick our lunch venue (these days we choose a pub!), which was always Robin’s on the Cornhill for a hot dog with onions and ketchup. I take my own kids there now, and it’s no less enjoyable now for the white caravan being replaced by an actual building made of bricks! On Saturday 23rd August, Doctor Who returned, and I eagerly sat down with my boys to watch it, just like I used to when my parents would tell me that “no-one will ever be as good as Tom Baker”. Doctor Who mesmerised me as a kid, my first clear memory of TV is of fifth Doctor Peter Davison regenerating into Colin Baker and I’ve loved it ever since. These days it brings me and my kids together on Saturday evenings and I love issue 13 • Autumn 2014
