Molly’s news... THE FOOD FOR LIFE CATERING MARK The Food for Life Catering Mark provides a guarantee that menus served outside of the home; in nurseries, schools, universities, hospitals, cafes and the workplace are freshly prepared, seasonal and better for animal welfare. Food providers are independently audited to ensure they meet high standards of provenance and traceability, allowing them to reassure their customers in both the public and private sector that the food they serve is food they can trust. The Bronze Standards ensure food is freshly prepared using ingredients which are free from GM and controversial additives. Meat is from animals farmed to UK welfare standards and eggs are from cage-free hens. The Silver and Gold Standards build on the Bronze Standards, rewarding every pound spent on ingredients that are ethically sourced, local, fair trade and organic. They offer flexibility to recognise food providers’ different strengths and priorities and reward steps taken to make healthy eating easier. Many caterers in Lincolnshire already meet the Food for Life Catering Mark standards including First College, The Farm Kitchen and Food 4 Thought who all hold the prestigious Food for Life Gold Catering Mark Standard. If your school is enrolled on the Food for Life Partnership (FFLP) programme and your caterer has a Catering Mark award you can be sure they are meeting the Food Quality section of the FFLP award. www.sacert.org/catering. A great opportunity to try a freshly prepared, seasonal and locally sourced roast dinner is to visit your local school to celebrate FFLP’s annual Roast Dinner Day on 20th November! www.foodforlife.org.uk/roastdinnerday.

The plan cites the success of national programme the Food for Life Partnership (commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council) to improve food quality and meal uptake. Birthday parties are the ‘in thing’ these days, but, if your organisational skills are limited to a game of ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ served up with a few crisps and sausages on sticks, you may prefer to hold your little one’s celebration at a professional venue rather than at home.

Mum Amy Davies-Haw booked a Rand Farm Park party for a joint birthday celebration for her children Bradley, aged five and Kaicey, aged two. She says: “I had never been there but had been told great things about it. As it was both my children’s birthdays, I wanted something that would be good for both. “When we saw the price and what was on offer, we thought it was good value for money. On the day we knew we had made the right choice – all the children and parents enjoyed it!” “The homemade cakes were huge and personalised for each child! The food was lovely and there was a good range – and plenty too. The little extras made the day a bit more special, such as the helium balloons and the ice cream after the tractor ride. “When the party was over, we could all stay for as long as we liked so could re-visit the animals or play in the play barn. I would definitely recommend it!”

new bike hire scheme Lincoln’s new bike hire scheme, hirebike, was launched in August at an event on the Brayford Waterfront. 40 bikes will be available to hire from eight locations across Lincoln through the hirebike scheme, which has been funded through Access LN6 – a multi-million pound programme to increase sustainable travel at Lincolnshire County Council. Cllr Martin Hill, Leader of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Through Access LN6, we aim to increase the number of trips made by bike into and out of Lincoln city centre. Initial consultation into the barriers of cycling in Lincoln highlighted that having access to bikes was a problem. We aim to address this with hirebike which is convenient and accessible to people of all ages and abilities in Lincoln and the LN6 area.” To hire a bike you must first become a member. This is free and can be completed online at www.hirebikelincoln.co.uk or over the phone at 01522 370 143. Once registered you’ll receive a unique code which you input at the docking station to release your bike.

molly’s guide • issue 8 • Autumn 2013

Access LN6

Once you’ve completed your journey you can return the bike to any docking station, not just the one you rented it from. Hirebike has been launched for both commuters and visitors to the Lincoln area. The first half an hour of each rental is free and it’s then £1 per hour after that. The price is capped at £4 for a full day rental, and one person can hire up to five bikes – perfect for a family bike ride.

Secondary schools have measures in place to make sure this important change is handled in a friendly, caring, organised and effective way, minimising the worry for you and your child. In talking you through this process from our point of view, hopefully we can help you ask those all important question of your child and your choice of school. At The Newark Academy we see this transition between primary and secondary as a crucial period in a child’s education and we implement a number of procedures to ensure every child is catered for. From an early stage we ensure students become familiar with the school environment by inviting local primary schools to various events, most recently our

series of events titled “The Newark Experience” aimed at children as young as seven. This means the children are familiar with us and our routines, so that over time it becomes less daunting. A variety of our staff often visit primary schools in order to meet and develop positive relationships with the students whose education and well-being we will ultimately be responsible for; this includes our Able, Gifted and Talented co-ordinator as well as our Individual needs co-ordinator, to help us understand the exact needs of your child so we can meet them best. We have specific Year 6 transitions days where all future students attend to meet their new Principal, Achievement Leader, Head of Year and Tutor to ensure their faces are known to all. Perhaps more importantly they will meet their new classmates

Children from Year 5 & Year 6 are also invited to our free summer school, again to assist in the adjustment to secondary school life and get to know their new friends. At The Newark Academy we understand the financial difficulties parents can often face when preparing a child for secondary school. To ease this process we offer the first uniform (blazer, tie and sports polo) free of charge to all students and free daily return travel to school from the local area. More recently we have announced a free school residential trip for all year 7 students to Walesby Forest. This is a 3 day fun filled activity week designed to build confidence amongst students and encourage team-building, getting to know each other and our values. In September, Year 7 students are guided through their induction programme by the team they know, as well as other students who buddy them. a unique environment The Priory Academy LSST, one of the top performing non-selective State schools in the country, continues to flourish and build on its recent successes. Students and their families are attracted by the academy’s unique environment. The achievement of academic excellence and the development of an individual’s true potential are pursued enthusiastically and successfully within the local, national and international communities. Students, from the day they arrive in Year 7, are encouraged to participate fully in all that the academy has to offer. It is expected that the relationship will last until, and even beyond, the time when they progress from Sixth Form to university and their chosen careers. Parents and carers also appreciate and support the high expectations of achievement, behaviour and uniform that are established clearly and consistently. The Priory’s exceptional learning environment, thoughtfully fostered for many years, has been complemented in recent times by the addition of a new sports hall, planetarium & Sixth Form study centre. Judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its most recent inspection, The Priory continues to post excellent

examination results, including a 99% pass rate for five or more A*-C grades (including English and Maths) at GCSE. The aspirational emphasis also helps students progress to the country’s top universities, including Oxbridge and the rest of the Russell Group. The academy’s distinctive ethos, known as The Priory Way, is designed to ensure that students appreciate the excitement of learning, the rewards of personal challenge & the importance of helping others. In this way, they are helped to become true citizens of the world.

holiday club...

Burton Hathow

Go Beyond is a holiday club designed for children aged 2-11. Its aim is to make every holiday an adventure, and provide an exciting and varied activity programme to suit all its participants. The club runs through each and every holiday, beginning as early as 8am in the morning and running until 5:30pm. A typical week includes horse riding (experience not necessary), den and hide building, woodland adventures, clay modelling, outdoor sports, fishing, making and creating, investigative days, archery and experimental activities. There is of course plenty of time for unwinding and playing in the school’s extensive grounds.

The club has already attracted a number of repeat visitors, with children choosing ‘Go Beyond’ at Burton Hathow over other holiday clubs because of the variety on offer. The club is open to all children and is by no means exclusive to the pupils of the school. The younger pupils enjoy the benefit of a flexible nursery environment, which means parents can be safe in the knowledge that their children are cared for by qualified and experienced nursery practitioners. Every day is different and children really do ‘Go Beyond’ their usual daily routines, with adventures that can only be described as creative, fulfilling and imaginative.

Skills for all ages, all interests and all abilities.

Lincoln College

international hosting...

Have you ever thought about hosting an international student in your own home? Many foreign students choose Lincoln College as a starting point for their educational journey in the UK and the majority of these students will be looking for accommodation with English-speaking families.

“My name is Zhu Xiaohua but you can call me Sally!” This is a typical introduction to a surrogate English family by a Chinese student who comes to study at Lincoln College. The International team actively recruits overseas and this September we are expecting an increase in the number of overseas students, particularly those from China, who are applying to study on our Level 3 ‘A’ level or business courses. Good pastoral care for these young students (some as young as 16 yrs old) is very important to Lincoln College. For many years we have been supported by local families who provide safe and welcoming “homestay” accommodation. This year we are looking for

14

tel: 01522 535068

more families to join our scheme. The “host family” or “homestay” receives £100 a week to provide accommodation, breakfast and an evening meal for the student. However, there’s a bit more to it than providing a roof over their heads! Western culture can be quite a surprise to our newcomers and we need caring individuals willing to help the student settle into a completely different way of life and support them through their studies. We would love to hear from anyone keen to know more about hosting. Families with young children are particularly welcome! Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire

where learning is fun... is currently being heralded by Lincolnshire County Council’s Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire. The participating schools had already visited our sites over the previous terms and were eligible for admission to this well-received organised day. The children were able to take part in such supervised activities as kite building, story-book reading, model making, playing with war-time toys & learning about aircrew stories as told by costumed re-enactors.

ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND PROJECT STILL FLYING HIGH As the summer term of 2013 came to an end, 180 schoolchildren from six schools around the county met at the Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby for an inaugural schools’ Jamboree sponsored by the Arts Council England and the Department for Education under their project banner which

The idea for this day’s events stemmed from the remit AHL had of involving children from the ages of 5-18 years old in learning about our county’s rich aviation heritage as part of the schools’ curriculum. It is our intention to encourage over 8000 children from around at least 140 schools within LCC control to visit several of our 11 sites at least three times over the three years of the life of the project. Thanks to a dedicated team, we are able to offer a bespoke service to each school; arranging the visit to whichever site they have chosen - be it a single visit or, as is more popular now, a two-site visit in one day. We will arrange for a transport subsidy to be paid towards coach hire costs. At each site an education officer will liaise on the type of tour required, in line with the school curriculum. If it is felt that re-enactors could enhance the visit they can be utilised at no cost to the school if so required. Children have the opportunity of dressing up in period costume, handling actual artefacts and seeing the workings of aircraft close-up. Our visits not only cover aviation subjects but also explain the social side of life in war-time Britain, including rationing, child evacuees and food production. To back up this exciting day, a specially designed downloadable Teachers Pack is available free of charge from our AHL website and deals with preand post-visit exercises and information, as well as relevant subjects relating to each aviation site. Through this project, children and participating schools are also eligible to gain an Arts Council England Arts award as part of the Artsmark scheme. If you would like more information on this unique and exciting project please contact Dave Harrigan: dave.harrigan@lincolnshire.gov.uk or Sue Miller: sue. miller@lincolnshire.gov.uk for more details and an information sheet. Food for Life Partnership in Lincolnshire, 8th-14th June 2013 The Food for Life Partnership is flourishing in Lincolnshire! These photos taken over the course of a week in June give a flavour of some of the truly inspirational work taking place in FFLP schools across the county, with pupils demonstrating their cooking, growing and enterprise skills, organising community events and having fun! tel: 01522 535068

The week began with Bassingham Primary School’s Open Gardens and Scarecrow Festival. The school bloggers said: “Yesterday was the BIG day, we have been working towards the Open Gardens for the last few months and were so proud to open up our school garden and let the public in. There were over 400 people through our gates and the whole village was buzzing with over 30 scarecrows displayed”. Washingborough Academy hosted their first School Farmers Market, an event organised and run by the children, selling delicious, fresh, local produce. “The children’s stalls displayed all the fantastic items they had made; gingerbread men, beautiful cupcakes, lots of plants and great garden ornaments and signs. It was such a lovely atmosphere, customers genuinely interested in the items for sale, with the children relishing the task of selling what they had made. Wow! What a day and we raised £310 to help encourage more children to grow and cook. What a success!” The Farm Kitchen organised for Digby Primary School to visit Simpsons butchers in Heckington to learn about the ‘story of their lunches’. “They had a go at making their very own sausages & had great fun using the sausage machine. They did a fantastic job controlling the speed the sausage meat came out & soon picked up how to form their sausages into links. They were delighted to be able to take their sausages home to eat!“.

The day finished with a tour The Farm Kitchen, who provide their hot lunches. “It was fascinating - we never realised how many meals were actually produced and what a mammoth task it is every day to feed so many children!”. The Farm Kitchen have the prestigious Gold Food for Life Catering Mark Award. Director of Public Health, Dr Tony Hill visited Saxilby Primary School after receiving a ‘golden ticket’ to lunch at the Doddington Hall award ceremony in March. Dr Hill commented, “I was delighted to be invited to Saxilby and enjoyed an excellent, healthy lunch supplied by the Farm Kitchen. It was good to see so many opportunities for children to learn about healthy living and put it into practice.” “Wow, what a brilliant occasion!” were the words of staff & pupils from St Helena’s CE Primary School who held their first Community Open Day. Welcoming governors, retired employees, past parents, volunteers & friends, as well as past pupils across 9 decades, they hope this will become a regular event throughout the school year”. All meals are freshly prepared onsite in their newly opened kitchen. Chad Varah Primary School’s Produce Show was the culmination of many weeks work by Year 6 pupils. The day saw the launch of the Chad Varah malt loaf, 94 entries to the show from pupils and community alike and a recipe book produced by the pupils. As the school blogged “Today was an inspiration for children, parents and members of the community. [The produce show] has proved that our complete immersion in cooking and growing this year has increased pupil understanding, confidence, life skills and pure enjoyment. Today has been simply stunning!” BELOW: Chad Varah Primary School

Digby CE Primary School held a 1940s Outdoor Learning Day, to celebrate the year’s achievement including their bronze FFLP award and the Chelsea Flower Show silver gilt medal. All 13 activities, allowed the children to learn new skills and make new friends in the process. As Ashley aged 9 said, “I thought the soup was the best activity, it was in the outdoor classroom. I chopped lots of vegetables and herbs. It very nice and tasty - delicious.” The Food for Life Partnership has been commissioned for a second year by Lincolnshire County Council due to its proven impact on children’s health and wellbeing. Local Programme Manager, Kate Shaw, will be delighted to speak to any school interested in enrolling. To find out more about FFLP, improving school food and our involvement with the School Food Plan, visit www.foodforlife.org.uk or call Kate on 07917 671498 (kshaw@soilassociation.org), or Denise Hornsey, Food in Schools team, 07748 624117 (denise.hornsey@lincolnshire.gov.uk).

Alongside this the team also oversee the North Kesteven Centre GP Referral scheme. The scheme is currently free and offers 12 weeks with a GP referral exercise specialist. Please note that clients have to be referred and certain medical conditions apply.

The team operate activities for all ages and a majority are free to attend. The team’s equipment are available to hire and they are available to hire for community events as well as private parties, and we do deliver across Lincolnshire, but our main focus is North Kesteven. As well as hired equipment the team also offer free community days known as NK Outreach

The team offer inclusive fun activities for everyone, and the more people we engage with the better news for funding opportunities as our projects are funding reliant. Fostering & Adoption

Since it was launched in 1997, National Adoption Week has grown year on year. It has helped to raise awareness and reach people across the UK who wish to know more about adoption.

molly’s guide • issue 8 • Autumn 2013

4th – 10th November 2013 What is adoption? Adoption is a way of providing a loving home for children who cannot be brought up within their own birth family. When you adopt, you take on all the legal rights and responsibilities for the child. From the moment you first consider adopting you are embarking on a journey; adoption is not always easy, but it can be extraordinarily rewarding. The Local Authority will offer training and support to help you prepare for adoption, and this support is continued for as long as you feel it is needed.

Who needs adopting? Children vary in age and come from a variety of different ethnic and religious backgrounds; some have special needs or disabilities, and some are sibling groups which need to be kept together. Many adopted children will have experienced some loss and separation; some may have been abused or neglected. Their past experiences can, not only affect their behaviour and development, but also encourage a confused and distorted view of family life and relationships. Yet, if you can nurture a child by offering love, care and support, you can help them to reach their full potential.

Can I adopt? There is no such thing as a typical carer; what you are able to offer a child is much more important than your personal circumstances. In reality, anyone with time and the desire to help a child reach their full potential can apply, and suitable adopters come from a range of different backgrounds and with varied experiences. Lincolnshire has a diverse population and the children who need looking after come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We aim to recruit suitable carers from all walks of life and Lincolnshire adoption service welcomes applicants who are: • Single, married or unmarried. • From any ethnic or religious background. • Heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. • A homeowner or living in rented accommodation. • Employed or on benefits. In Lincolnshire, most children are adopted under the age of five. Therefore, the service also particularly welcomes enquiries about the following, harder to place children: • Sibling groups. • Children over the age of five. • Children with disabilities or developmental delay.

For more information: If you feel you would like to find out more about adoption call 0800 093 3099 or log on to www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/adoption

Family Holidays Toe the line or face a fine HOW PRICES COMPARE OCTOBER HALF TERM 7 nights, h/board, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria During school holiday (Oct 19): £1,807 During term time (Oct 14): £1,644 Price difference: £163 cheaper during term time SUMMER HOLIDAY 2014 14 nights, self catering, Corfu During school holiday (Aug 18): ££2,196 During term time (June 23): £1,591 Price difference: £605 cheaper during term time All prices quoted are for a family of 4

Generally, the best holiday deals are before the schools break up. But, from this September, getting a cheaper deal will no longer be a valid reason for pulling your kids out of school.

Until now, head teachers had the power to authorise up to 10 days’ absence in “special circumstances”. But Government changes mean that absences can now only be approved if they are for “exceptional circumstances” – and this does not include cheaper holidays! So, parents who do take their kids on holiday during term time will face a penalty of £60 per child. The fine doubles if not paid within 21 days. Will this make parents and carers think twice before they book a holiday in term time? As my friend Claire – a mum of two primary school aged boys – says: “It’s worth the £120 fine to take the boys out of school when the holiday is so much cheaper.” By Lisa James, Independent Travel Expert. lisa.james@independenttravelexperts.co.uk

learning to read As a bit of a book worm I’m used to conversations about reading and how important it is for child development - you will already know that as parents you are your child’s most influential teacher with an important part to play in helping your child to learn to read.

28

tel: 01522 535068

top tips to making reading fun CHOOSE A QUIET TIME Not as easy as it sounds, you need to pick your moments well. If you have little one’s like ours this could be a struggle but set aside a quiet time with no distractions. 10-15 minutes is usually long enough. MAKE READING ENJOYABLE The easiest and biggest mistake to make is to force it and traumatise your child to reading – Make reading an enjoyable experience. Sit with your child. Try not to pressurise if he or she is reluctant. If your child loses interest then do something else. Give it time, you will soon be enjoying to read with your child every day. MAINTAIN THE FLOW If your child mispronounces a word don’t interrupt immediately. Instead allow opportunity for self-correction. It’s better to tell a child some unknown words to maintain the flow rather than insisting on trying to build them all up from the sounds of the letters. BE POSITIVE If your child says something nearly right to start with that is fine. Don’t say ‘No. That’s wrong,’ but ‘Let’s read it together’ and point to the words as you say them. Boost your child’s confidence with constant praise for even the smallest achievement. SUCCESS IS THE KEY It’s really easy as parents, anxious for a child to progress, to mistakenly give a child a book that is too difficult. This can have the opposite effect to the one they are wanting. Until your child has built up his or her confidence, it is better to keep to easier books. Struggling with a book with many unknown words can make children become reluctant readers. VISIT THE LIBRARY Encourage your child to use the public library regularly. Lincoln has an absolutely excellent children’s section in the Central Library and it’s well worth a visit with your little ones – it’s also a cheap morning out to sit in the Library & read books with your little ones. REGULAR PRACTICE Try to read with your child on most school days. ‘Little & often’ is best. My personal favourites are ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and ‘The Gruffalo’ but my little ones have moved onto Harry Potter books now so I don’t get chance to read them so much now! COMMUNICATE Your child will most likely have a reading diary from school, ours do, and we get to write in them daily after the children have ready their books. Try to communicate regularly with positive comments and any concerns. Your child will then know that you are interested in their progress. TALK ABOUT THE BOOKS Always talk to your child about the book; about the pictures, the characters, how they think the story will end, their favourite part. You will then be able to see how well they have understood and you will help them to develop good comprehension skills. VARIETY IS IMPORTANT Remember children need to experience a variety of reading materials eg. picture books, hard backs, comics, magazines, poems, and information books – just make it as varied and as fun as you can and the rest will follow.

Palace Theatre Newark

family fun at the Palace... The Palace Theatre, Newark is welcoming back pantomime favourite Bernie Clifton for its 2013 pantomime, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs.

This marks Bernie’s third visit to Newark and the Palace is delighted to host him again for Christmas. Bernie is joined by UK Eurovision entrant, Nicki French as the Wicked Queen Grizelda. The rest of the cast is made up of Victoria Scott as Snow White, Keith Gilmore as Prince Valiant and Adam Daye as Dame Dolly Dumpling. 2013 also marks the Palace’s first relaxed performance of pantomime, on 10th December. The relaxed performance is specially adapted for audience members who might have felt they would face challenges from attending a standard theatre performance. This will include adjusting sound and lighting levels, and the removal or reduction of any special effects that might have proved unsettling.

Additionally there will be a chill out zone where audience members can go to relax until they feel like re-entering the auditorium. Theatre Manager, Carys Coulton-Jones says, “We know pantomime is the first theatrical experience for many children. We are really excited about the relaxed performance, as it will open up that experience to many who might not otherwise have been able to enjoy the show and we can’t wait to welcome both our new and old audiences for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs this Christmas”. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs from 5th-31st December. Tickets are available now.

Molly’ s guide to... enterprising mums...

JO MILLER

JO RYLAND

When I turned 40, I took a good look at my life, and although I was very happy and content, I also realised that there were a few changes I would like to make.

My background & my loves are teaching and German. After 10 years of teaching, I dropped to part-time after my first maternity leave 12 years ago and signed up with Phoenix in 2002. With Dan as a baby, I attended lots of local mums & tots groups, all of whom loved the fact that they could easily buy cards, giftables & other stationery items. They truly sell themselves & I quickly realised the potential of a mini-business offering such flexibility around our already busy schedules.

I decided I wanted to look after my body a bit more as those aches and pains were starting to tell me that I was no longer a spring chicken! I decided I wanted to spend more time with my children aged 4 and 6. Luckily for me, my oldest friend, Louise, introduced me to a company called “Forever Living”, the world’s number 1 growers, manufacturers and retailers of Aloe Vera products. After learning what the company was about, and that, with their help and support, I could start my own business in Aloe Vera, I jumped at the chance to work flexible hours. Please contact me at for more information on the products or the business.

With any new venture, you have to invest time in the first few years & I attended mums groups & coffee mornings (with 2 toddlers in tow!). My ‘mini-business’ has grown stronger over the years, and I now have a team of like-minded Independent Phoenix Cards Traders working under me. Our artists are ‘not-on-the-high-street’ and our designs are very innovative – we’re market leaders in Advent Calendar Cards and one of the strongest companies for charity support.

Molly’s guide to...

...Daddy Day Care As I was on holiday with nothing better to think about, my mind started to wander, pondering fatherhood’s big questions like: “At what point do I encourage my boys to take up a hobby?” and “Is it time I bought a big shed?” These two thoughts were losely connected. My twins are four years old and love running about, and Joseph in particular likes climbing over dangerous things, but that’s about it. I also have no inclination to hothouse them towards being the next Wimbledon champion. It is not that I haven’t got any hopes and ambitions for them, but being a pushy tennis parent does not appeal to me. It would also involve me talking to other pushy tennis dads, and I am pretty hopeless at all that testosterone-fuelled competitive banter, i.e shameless bragging, like: “Tarquin has made the finals, his coach says he’s the best player they’ve had since Fred Perry...” and so on.

It has been an excellent summer of sport - and by that I mean there has been no major football tournament for England to disappoint us in. There has, however, been Andy Murray’s magnificent Wimbledon victory, Mo Farah’s inspired running performance in Moscow and England giving the Australian’s a lesson in Cricket.

34

tel: 01522 535068

email: info@mollysguide.co.uk

But I thought I’d test the water of whether they are ready to play some sport and I decided to give George and Joseph their first football lesson to see if they would like it. I found myself in my back garden with two make-shift goal posts and a pair of boys who could not care less about the rules, thinking that here are two potential England stars, or if they are no good at it, Scotland.

molly’s guide • issue 8 • Autumn 2013

RIGHT: George trying out the telescope LEFT: Joseph, practising for Mount Everest?

The result of this exercise was unsurprising. Neither seemed bothered about the beautiful game. However I did learn that George might fancy a career in gardening, leaving the ball in front of an open goal to smell the roses at the side of the lawn. I love football. I played it at school and for my village team - Saxilby - and so on, but actually there is no guarantee that either of my boys will like it.

And if I steer them towards it, am I being no better than those pushy tennis parents? I imagine a pushy football parent is equally as bad as the tennis equivalent, but more aggressive and sweary.

So I’m settling for a new tactic - I’m going to wait for them to ask me if they can go to karate, cricket, creative dance or whatever and leave it all to chance.

Sure they might never play football for England, I can live with that. Joseph is probably going to climb Mount Everest and George might win the Chelsea Flower Show.

what’s on SEPTEMBER 8th-29th Aviation Poetry Competition – The Natural World Centre Sunday 8th-Sunday 29th September

Although Lincolnshire is famously known as ‘BomberCounty’, as our thoughts turn to the commemoration of the Battle of Britain in September, there is quite a tale to tell of the role played by Fighter Command in the county. American, Canadian and Polish fighter pilots all flew from Lincolnshire with Fighter Command, many of whom lost their lives. The exhibition will also focus on Canadian pilot John Magee, the author of the famous poem ‘High Flight’. John Magee flew from RAF Wellingore and was tragically killed only months after writing the poem. To celebrate this beautiful poem we will be holding a poetry competition for children 16 years and under. The theme for the competition is Flight, whether inspired by the flight of aircraft or maybe the birds who swoop around the nature reserve – the interpretation of the theme is up to you!
