Molly’s news... TERM-TIME HOLIDAYS: A FALSE ECONOMY Parents who book family holidays during term time risk damaging their children’s long-term educational achievements. That’s the view of Debbie Barkes, head teacher at St Faith’s Church of England Infant School. Mrs Barkes contacted Molly’s Guide following an article in our September issue, which reported that parents now face a penalty of £60 per child if they take their children out of school without authorisation. Mrs Barkes said: “The article didn’t mention the reasons behind the change in regulations, which are about the importance of not missing out on education. “In total, there are 175 non-school days a year for families to spend time together, to go on visits and day trips, to go on holiday and to attend routine appointments.

This leaves only 190 school days. Any days off out of these 190, for whatever reason, add up to lost learning and children can’t gain maximum benefit from the opportunities provided at school.” Mrs Barkes says the impact can mean children fall behind and miss important learning activities, exams, tests or assessments, as well as losing confidence and feeling ‘left out’ on their return. She added: “There is a break in the continuity of their learning. There is also a serious impact on their future opportunities and success – children with attendance at 90%+ are more likely to gain five or more A-C grade GCSEs. “If a child has 10 days off in a year, their attendance level drops to 95%, 19 days drops attendance to 90%. “Regular school attendance is vital for our children to do well and succeed.”

Molly’s news...

It’s hard work having kids. We all try to find time for the things that matter, make a bit of an effort to take care of ourselves and our family the best way we can. One of the hardest things about looking after your family, is sometimes that means we forget to look after ourselves.

Health Trainer Service...

We all make personal sacrifices for our families, not always big things, but they all mount up and sometimes this leads to bigger problems. Your health is just as important as the health of your little ones. You often need to be able to balance lots of things like work, kids, cooking, housework and still have enough time and energy to play at the end of the day. Something a lot of women face after having children can be stubborn weight that hangs around and is hard to shift. It’s not fun to feel tired, out of breath and have no energy. Weight loss clubs are expensive, and can be hard to get to and doing things on your own can feel like a losing battle.

helping you and your family stay healthy and fit Not only that but there’s a lot of information available online, fad diets that don’t work long term and don’t fit into your family life. Making a meal for your family and a separate meal for yourself may work for a couple of months but long term that’s expensive and time consuming. The Health Trainer service is a bit different to what you’ve heard before about improving your health. The most notable difference if that they have time for you, whenever and wherever you have time to see them. They’ll meet up with you where you’d like to meet. This could be at you’re SureStart centre, your local coffee shop or even your place of work. You can sit and have a chat about what you want to change, and start planning how is best for you to do it. Do you want to lose a bit of weight? Learn how to eat better; for you and your family? Maybe even stop smoking? Whatever it is you want to change about your health, they can probably help. They can give you practical information and tips to keep you motivated on the road to achieving your goal, and they’ll keep meeting up with you until you’re confident you can keep going on your own. Over 90% of the people our Health Trainers saw last year either achieved or part-achieved their goals.

So make time for your self, and get help from someone who has time for you. Contact the Health Trainer service on 01522 873581 or refer yourself online at www. lincoln.gov.uk/healthtrainers and click the link on the right hand side.

Molly’s news...

YOUR BABY’S LANGUAGE A major UK-wide research project about baby communication is being carried out by researchers at the Universities of Lincoln, Lancaster and Liverpool. The aim is to find out which words young children in the UK understand and say and which gestures they do.

The research project is publicly funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and is the biggest study in the UK of under 18 month olds’ first words. The researchers are looking for parents of under 18 month olds from all over the UK who want to help by filling in some simple questionnaires about themselves, their baby and their baby’s words and gestures, which they complete by post or online. Participation should only take about 20-30 minutes. As a ‘thank you’ to parents they will receive a unique personalised memento for their child and they can sign up to the project’s newsletter which will keep them updated about the findings. The information provided by parents is used to build up a picture of UK early language development—the UK Communicative Development Inventory (CDI). This may help professionals to pick up on problems more easily in the future by comparing a child’s progress against national averages. If you interested to find out more or if you would like to take part in the project, please visit the webpage www.uk-cdi.ac.uk, or contact the team via email at ukcdi@lincoln.ac.uk or call 01522 837325.

early education Free places for some 2 year-olds places

tled Is your child enti to a free place? Over the last 10 years we have all got used to the idea that once children turn 3, they are entitled to 15 hours per week of free funding either at a registered nursery, pre-school or childminder.

10

tel: 01522 535068

This funding runs for 38 weeks of the year, and is usually in line with school term times. Whilst for many people it provides some very welcome relief from nursery fees, and for others a break from full time parenting, it is actually offered to help to prepare children for the transition into school and is a great way of levelling the playing field for all children, regardless of home backgrounds. This September the government extended this free funding to include the 20% most disadvantaged 2 year olds. Many nurseries and some childminders are registered to provide these sessions – usually local authorities insist that settings are graded ‘GOOD’ or ‘OUTSTANDING’ by OFSTED before they can offer the funded session.

Sarah Steel, MD of The Old Station Nursery Group tells us more... 2-year-olds whose family receives one of the following are eligible: • Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) • Support through part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income not over £16,190 • The Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit) The good news is that from September 2014 the criteria are extended to include another 20% of 2 year olds, so in practice 4 in every 10 2 year olds will be eligible. The criteria next year will be any 1 of the following:

As you can see, this a major development for families and will help hundreds and thousands of families to give their children a good start in their education. Many nurseries, pre-schools and childminders in Lincoln and Newark are offering the 2 year funding, so ask at a setting near you if you need further information, or contact your Health Visitor or nearest Children’s Centre.

• If they meet the eligibility criteria also used for free school meals • If their families receive Working Tax credits and have annual gross earnings of no more than £16,190 per year • If they have a current statement of special educational needs (SEN) or an education, health and care plan

• If they attract Disability Living Allowance; • If they are looked after by their local authority • If they have left care through special guardianship or through an adoption or residence order The government will confirm the benefits and earnings criteria for families on Universal Credit at a later date.

Lincoln Drill Hall

a lovely way to start the week Lincoln Drill Hall is inviting more under-fives to try out its Happy Monday Club

The club runs creative play sessions for under-fives in the Drill Hall Café Bar every Monday morning, during term time. Sessions are run by local group Rhubarb Theatre and led each week by a different local artist. The sessions alternate between music, dance, storytelling and making. Marketing manager Gavin Street said: “The feedback from parents and carers who come along has been great. It’s a lovely way to start the week. It’s become part of people’s social calendar. Adults

can just sit back and relax & are welcome to have coffee and cake in the bar. “The session runs from 10.30am to 11.30am but often starts a bit earlier and generally most people stay around for a coffee, chat and a play afterwards. “We started it a couple of years ago & it has grown by word of mouth. We get regular attendees as well as people who drop in. Currently we have 20 places, but we plan to accommodate more children & have more facilities in the future.”

The Happy Monday Club creative play sessions take place in the Café Bar every Monday during term time, from 10.30am11.30am. There are just 20 places each week. Cost: £3 per child; accompanying adults go free.

If you return you completed trail sheet you will be entered into a prize draw to win your chosen Christmas tree. Rosie’s treasure hunt entry is £5 per family with a donation from the proceeds going to charity. Visitors can also take the unique opportunity to wander among the trees and take time to choose your own Christmas centrepiece. The tree you pick will be tagged and then cut for collection on a later day to suit you. This unique festive experience is being offered at Fillingham Christmas Trees on the B1398 between Lincoln and Gainsborough over

their CHOOSE YOUR OWN TREE WEEKEND – November 23rd & 24th and 30th November & December 1st from 9am to 3.30pm each day. Fillingham Christmas Trees also offers visitors the chance to bag a bargain in the decorations outlet shop plus there will be hot and cold refreshments available in our Santa’s Grotto Café. Check out our website www.fillingham-trees.co.uk to find out all the other activities that we have planned for later in December. There are plenty of reasons to visit us more than once this year.

Christmas magic on the farm

White Post Farm

Christmas is the most magical time of year at White Post Farm and this year the wonder begins on Saturday 23rd November. Popular CBEEBIES character Mike the Knight will be down on the Farm making personal appearances at intervals throughout the day meeting all his fans. Santa arrives and moves into his brand new grotto where he is ready to meet all the boys and girls, everyday right up to Christmas Eve. Every child that visits the farm gets to meet Santa as part of admission and all get a token gift with the option to upgrade to a wrapped up present as well. This year the brand new Elves Workshop means you can choose your own gift and Santa’s real reindeer will be nice and warm in the Silver Barn for everyone to meet! Christmas at White Post Farm is made extra special with the renowned Nativity Play as visitors play all the parts – with no rehearsals.

molly’s guide • issue 9 • Winter 2013

The Nativity stable, with real animals of course, makes White Post Farm’s yuletide season a magical place to be. Christmas lambs are born throughout the period, making every day full of festive fun & surprises. Bransby Horses

Horsing about at Christmas Find your festive spirit with Bransby Horses this winter! The festive season is nearly upon us! Any parent knows that Christmas is a very busy time in any family – keeping up with buying presents while your precious little one changes their mind daily on what to ask Santa for, ordering the Turkey, visiting relatives, decking the halls with endlessly tangled decorations, not to mention finding the one light bulb that has blown the whole festoon of twinkly fairy lights! It is easy to forget that Christmas is the time for basking in the heart-warming happiness of being with your family. Why not escape the madness and take a special day out with your nearest and dearest while supporting your local Charity? A FREE day out at Bransby Horses provides a fun day for all of the family, whether it be Rover the dog or Great-granddad Roger! We are completely dog and wheel chair friendly. During the month of December, enjoy our Christmas atmosphere while basking in the glory of our beautiful real Christmas tree! The 14th December sees our annual Christmas Fayre with stalls, crafts and plenty of festive fun (there will even be a cheeky mulled wine in it for the adults!). Santa will be paying us a visit in a carriage pulled by one of our very own fantastic driving ponies, then settling down in his Grotto to meet with the kids. Bransby Horses have a wonderful wooden allweather play area for the children. The Feedroom Café offers delicious hot drinks to warm your cockles, along with a menu filled with hot and cold snacks and tantalising fancy cakes.

As if there wasn’t enough to do, more than 350 of our lovely rescued animals are on site waiting to meet you. Christmas is a special time for them too as they get to meet all the kind families who give them lovely scratches behind their ears and they get extra carrots as a festive treat! If you visit during the week, you could catch a glimpse of Scott the farrier trimming Craigie Boy’s feet, or Johnny the dentist making sure Gemma the donkey has lovely healthy teeth! Garry our Intelligent Horsemanship expert might even be in Tizzy and Munchkin’s field helping them build up their trust in humans. Plus, don’t forget, our amazing adoption horses are also close by and ready to give their favourite adopters a Christmas nuzzle! We can’t wait for Christmas at Bransby Horses – a truly magical time where the spirit of giving really does fill your heart with joy.

Usborne Books

Christmas gift ideas... Christmas is rapidly approaching. If you’re anything like me it can be a struggle to come up with ideas for children’s presents which still keep their interest once the tinsel comes down. I find good quality books always go down well, so here are my top 5 recommendations from Usborne Children’s Books.

1. Big Book of Science things to make and do (£9.99) This is one of my top sellers, perfect for budding scientists. Contains over 50 fun projects that fly, spin, whoosh, zoom and ooze, plus over 500 stickers to decorate them. This book won the 2008 Royal Society Prize for Science Books: Junior Prize. (Age 5+)

2. Puzzle Tin (£9.99) I am amazed by how many hours of fun children can get from this Puzzle Tin. Contains over 100 assorted puzzles on wipe-clean cards which test skills of observation, memory and arithmetic. Comes in a great storage tin with its own pen. (Age 6+)

3. Poems for

Little Children (£12.99)

If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional nursery rhymes, I think this collection of children’s poems is perfect. The board book format also makes it ideal for little hands. (Age 18 months+)

4. Illustrated Classics for Girls (£17.99) 5. Illustrated Classics for Boys (£17.99) These luxurious cloth bound editions make lovely keepsake gifts. The girls’ version is a collection of 6 timeless stories which include The Railway Children, The Wizard of Oz, The Secret Garden, Black Beauty, Little Women and Heidi. The boys’ version contains 6 stories of action and adventure including Robin Hood, Gulliver’s Travels, Moonfleet, Around the World in Eighty Days, Robinson Crusoe, and The Canterville Ghost. Lincoln College

international hosting...

Have you ever thought about hosting an international student in your own home? Many foreign students choose Lincoln College as a starting point for their educational journey in the UK and the majority of these students will be looking for accommodation with English-speaking families.

“My name is Zhu Xiaohua but you can call me Sally!” This is a typical introduction to a surrogate English family by a Chinese student who comes to study at Lincoln College. The International team actively recruits overseas and this September we are expecting an increase in the number of overseas students, particularly those from China, who are applying to study on our Level 3 ‘A’ level or business courses. Good pastoral care for these young students (some as young as 16 yrs old) is very important to Lincoln College. For many years we have been supported by local families who provide safe and welcoming “homestay” accommodation. This year we are looking for

40

tel: 01522 535068

more families to join our scheme. The “host family” or “homestay” receives £100 a week to provide accommodation, breakfast and an evening meal for the student. However, there’s a bit more to it than providing a roof over their heads! Western culture can be quite a surprise to our newcomers and we need caring individuals willing to help the student settle into a completely different way of life and support them through their studies. We would love to hear from anyone keen to know more about hosting. Families with young children are particularly welcome! Molly’s guide to...

enterprising mums...

CATHY BURTON MSCP AACP

HELEN WEEKS & JACKY COBB

Specialist Physiotherapist in Womens Health and Musculoskeletal Care Owner of Ladybugsfitness

Good friends Helen and Jacky knew they made a good team after successfully running the Muskham Baby and Toddler Group. So when the opportunity arose to buy the North Nottinghamshire Tumble Tots franchise they jumped at the chance.

Following the birth of my 2nd daughter, I realised that there was a real lack of information for pregnant ladies & new mums on how to go about exercising and restoring their bodies safely. So with that, Ladybugsfitness (my 3rd child) was born. As a Physiotherapist who specialises in Women’s Health, I felt that I had the expertise to help others. Working alongside me are other health care and fitness experts which enables Ladybugsfitness to be a ‘one stop’ service. We provide the men, women and their children a variety of options and services to help with health and fitness needs. Also available are a variety of pre and postnatal therapies and exercise classes to suit all the family. From postnatal pilates classes for mums and their babies to after school classes for older children. Nothing is more powerful than you being a happy, healthy role model to your children.

Both Helen and Jacky have children who have attended Tumble Tots. Jacky says “Having attended the Tumble Tots sessions I know what an important role they can play in a child’s healthy development as well as being a fun, sociable place to meet new friends for both adults and children. Helen says “both of my boys looked forward to their weekly Tumble Tots. It helped them with their confidence and development but above all the music and activities were fun. I am so proud that I can now be part of the Tumble Tots programme and can’t wait to get stuck in.” Classes commence in January 2014 in Newark, North Hykeham and Mansfield. For more information you can contact Helen and Jacky.

DECEMBER 5th - 31st Panto: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Thursday 5th – 31st December

There are more than 7 little reasons why this year’s Palace panto is bursting at the seams with a treasure trove of gold lined family fun.
