Molly’s guide to... ...getting crafty at Easter With Easter fast approaching, The Old Station Nursery has a cracking craft activity that you can do with your children. The craft activity uses resources available around the house and easily bought from craft stores or in the craft isle of your local supermarket.

MARBLED EGGS Marbling is a wonderful art activity that offers instant enjoyment and satisfaction for all, a bit like glitter. With this activity we are making colourful decorated eggs that can sit in a basket or hang from an Easter tree.

WHAT YO U NEED.. . ½ dozen th oroughly hard boile d eggs A bowl of water Marbling in ks, availab le from craft shops

You simply drip a couple of drops of your chosen colour ink into the bowl of water and then holding the egg, dip the egg into the water. The ink sits on the top of the water and when the egg makes contact with the water the ink is drawn to the egg surface. You will need somewhere to dry them when they come out the water; we use two clothes pegs to balance them on while they dry. Top tip: do not add more than two colours to the water at any time as it tends to go brown and ensure that you change the water when you change the ink colour. If you fancy hanging your eggs from a tree, then simply superglue some ribbon to the top of the egg and leave over night. We chose to arrange ours in a basket.

Molly’s guide to...

Getting your children to eat a good range of nutritious food is up there as one of the things that the majority of parents worry about the most.

...stealthy eating

From bad behaviour, lack of attention and obesity, we are all well aware of the problems that not eating properly brings. But as children develop a natural preference for the foods they enjoy the most, the challenge is to make healthy choices more appealing. Steve Quinn has managed to forge a successful business based on this approach. Previously a chef, he founded Cucina in 2005 after becoming disillusioned with the standard of school food during his job as an area manager covering 250 school kitchens. Jamie Oliver’s school dinner’s campaign had just been broadcast on channel 4, which aimed at getting decent food into Britain’s schools. The series helped raise awareness but it didn’t take off. Steve knew that to succeed, he needed to make school food fun and great-tasting while also being freshly-cooked.

A guide to making healthy eating easier

by Tracey Davies

Cucina is now serving food within 42 schools Two of Mark’s favourite across England. Each school has its own ‘stealthy’ recipes... experienced chef who hand makes a range of healthy dinners on site and presents them Executive Chef, Mark Cartwright in attractive ways. Mark Cartwright is one of Cucina’s three Executive Chefs. He liaises with all the school chefs about which foods are the best sellers and any ideas they have to improve their menus. He said: “Our approach, which we call stealthy eating, has helped us more than double the uptake of school dinners in sites across England.

Molly’s guide to... ...Gainsborough Old Hall Molly’s Guide recently joined the John Hunt Nursery & Primary School, on an educational visit to Gainsborough Old Hall, as part of the year 3 focus on the Tudors. “It is always a pleasure to join the children on a school trip” says Sheelagh Stevens, mother of Scarlett 8 and Billy 5. “The fun begins as soon as the bus arrives outside the school. It’s wonderful for children today to be able to visit such fascinating places of great history as part of their education”. On arriving at Gainsborough Old Hall, we were met by our tour guides; Sean and Frances, (both dressed in clothing of the period) who talked us through the itinerary of the day. The tour of the Hall started in the Great Hall and the children were very excited to learn they would all have the chance to dress in period costume. Soon, both King Henry VIII and Queen Consort, Anne Boleyn, were alive, joined by jesters, jugglers and dancers.’

From dancing and juggling, to cooking and serving a banquet to the King, the children get into the swing of things with dressing up and joining in

While getting into character I spotted Sean playing his Lute and a group of the boys dancing around him. The atmosphere was fabulous with all the children getting into role. King Henry happily stood for a picture alongside Queen Anne too!’

Focusing on nursery & primary school education We toured the medieval kitchen where the children were told about how food was prepared for the family and guests of the Hall. They were shown how bread was made in the bread ovens and how an ox would be roasted over the spit. Artificial pies, eggs, fruit and vegetables too, added to the scene – so all the children could really understand how different life was for the Tudors.’ A visit to the Solar Room – the private chambers of Lord Thomas Burgh and his family was a highlight for me! Sean talked of how the Tudors would prepare comfortable living space. The children were particularly humoured by stories of toilet arrangements and how they would deal with their fleas… Ammonia, it would seem, had many uses! Prior to lunch, the children were given the opportunity to be involved in a themed banquet. King Henry took his place at the centre of the top table with other royal dignitaries permitted to sit at his side. The children were delighted to serve the King and his guests with a specially prepared feast of cooked swan, freshly baked bread, fruit, vegetables and pies. The visit concluded with a quiz and the children needed to find the answers to the questions by retracing their steps through the Hall. In their groups they really paid special attention to the furniture, fabrics and the wall hangings. Back on the coach and heading back to school, I asked the children if they had enjoyed their trip. They were full of energy and excitement and it was clear that the trip was a great success.

Handcrafted & unique

REloved

Newark’s number one children’s boutique REloved is celebrating its first birthday this month. REloved opened last year selling pre-loved, designer children’s clothing, toys and books, and also stocks handcrafted and unique gifts, perfect for new babies, christenings and birthdays. Caroline Evans created REloved after hearing friends complain about what to do with the clothes that their children couldn’t wear anymore, but that still had so much life and love left in them. “I liked the idea of giving people the chance to earn extra money by having somewhere to sell their items on. We started selling handcrafted gifts to give local crafters the opportunity to showcase their talents,” added Caroline.

Children grow up so fast so we’ve always got new stock arriving. Lots of parents who shop with us say that their children have never dressed so well!

...Aviation Heritage Exciting times lie ahead for our schools around the county following a new initiative implemented by the Arts Council of England and the Department for Education in October last year Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire, a partnership of ten key aviation sites in the county ranging from the Aviation Centre at East Kirkby to the Operations Room at RAF Digby, have been awarded £234,000 to promote our museums and visitor centres to schools and educational establishments in Lincolnshire. With this funding we are planning to install the very latest technology over the coming three years at all our locations, including group interactive and CGI media. In addition, the sites will be equipped with teaching aids such as electronic white boards to assist in classroom discussions. See wartime aircraft close up and let the children feel the emotions of the age. To help teachers plan for visits we have developed a nationally-recognised Teachers’ Pack website entitled Take Flight, which will assist in setting up trips to the centres as well as pre- and post visits, and also offer up various topics for use during the visits.

The sky’s the limit for education have re-enactors and trained support staff on hand to make sure that the children get the most out of the day. Costumes will be available to enhance the experience of life in war-time Britain and some sites have recreated the 1940 classroom complete with sirens and ink pots to demonstrate what it was like before the computer age. To further encourage schools to participate in this three year project, schools will plan on visiting one of our sites at least once a year. We will be offering assistance in supporting the cost of transport. Twice a year there will be a competition draw for participating schools and the two prizes will be an all-expenses trip to the RAF National Museum at Cosford. Two lucky schools from the county are already planning their trips in March following the most recent draw in January.

If you want to do a multicentre visit in one day that can be arranged and we recommend the Visitor Centres at RAF Cranwell, RAF Digby or Thorpe Camp, which can cater for packed school lunches. Molly’s guide to...

Making travelling fun

travel games

Henry Ruddock, Chairman of Ruddocks of Lincoln, father of twins Sarah and John (7 ½ ) – talks to Molly’s Guide about travel games… ‘Once ‘I-Spy’,’ spot a blue car’ and ‘first one to see something green’ (doesn’t last long unless you’re sailing) have been exhausted, then your options shrivel to earplugs, shouting, or a travel game. Nil desperandum, there are plenty. Don’t neglect the basics – colouring and stickers – and it’s great to watch the colours matching the space as they grow older (I mean years, not minutes). Trivia and learning games score highly, especially for boys who love the competitive angle (most boys can turn anything into a competition), and one good one is ‘On the go’. Spend 10 seconds memorising the picture (them, not you) and despite avid scrutiny you can guarantee the first question is the one thing they hadn’t noticed (or maybe it’s just me). Quizonics do the same kind of thing. If you want to sneak in a bit of education masquerading as entertainment (would you be so devious?) then there’s lots of stuff on words, times tables, flags etc. Secret Scholar is one to look out for here. Travel games shouldn’t have too many bits. Apart from losing that vital piece (and it always is that one) you then have the gruesome prospect of finding it during the biennial (assuming that means every other year) valet of the back seat (but not so you can easily see) in the remains of a historic Smartie overlaid with the last few drops of a fruit shoot which has upended itself in the crack. Do you remember those annoying puzzles with 15 little squares which slid around until you made the picture? Or got the numbers in the right order. Apparently, I

molly’s guide • issue 5 • Easter 2013

have recently learnt, around 10% of them never worked! This could not be said of ‘get the mouse to the cheese’, or ‘pirate ship to gold’. But they are still annoying. Crayola have travel packs – spiral, doodle – but Crayola is always good value, even with plain A4 paper (having tried other makes, we now stock only Crayola. It is just so much better). Play in the car CD? At around £7 it’s worth a try, with songs, stories and memory games (10 games in all). If you want to let the kids loose on your iPhone or Android device, you can fit it into a wee case that will let you play a Peppa Pig or Fireman Sam game, or others to choose from. There is also a Trivia Quiz game. Are you there yet? At least all of the above (I think) are well less than a tenner, except for the iPhone games (£11.99), so if they can help the journey pass quickly, then that has got to be good value. Enjoy your journey! Henry Ruddock Ruddocks of Lincoln, 287 High Street, Lincoln, LN2 1AW – Tel; 01522 528285 www.ruddocksoflincoln.co.uk

The University of Lincoln School Newspaper Project will soon complete its 100th newspaper with a county primary or secondary school. The project aims to give school students the experience of being a real journalist and life in a busy newsroom, with the added bonus that all their work is professionally printed in a 16-page newspaper for their school. Since it started in 2009, dozens of schools and hundreds of pupils have taken part, learning the skills of a reporter, photographer, page designer and editor as they put together their own publication. The pupils work with a team of professional journalists and university undergraduates, who come to their school for the day and help them complete their own paper. The finished paper is then printed by project partners, Mortons of Horncastle, and up to 2000 copies are given to the school.

Innovation in Lincolnshire schools The pupils all get a copy, and the rest are often distributed to the local community. Project leader and journalism lecturer, Tim Greenfield said: “This year will be a real milestone for us as we pass the 100th school mark. Last year was our most successful ever, with 40 schools taking part and we hope the project continues to be as popular in the coming years.”

Proud of their pages, school pupils show off their newspages after a newsday with journalism students

The project aims to raise awareness of local journalism, and also enables schools to showcase their work, and reach out to local communities. The papers are excellent way for students to complete work to a professional standard, and to work with experienced journalists in the process. Many schools use the day as part of enrichment activities. Over 120,000 newspapers have been printed since 2009 and schools from Scunthorpe to Spalding have taken part. Many schools take part year after year, and a few complete more than one newspaper each year. In addition, the university is able to offer schools or groups of schools the chance to have their newspaper day on the Brayford campus instead of in their own school. It means pupils can use the university’s fantastic facilities and learn about life at university too. “We didn’t imagine four years ago that the project would snowball as it has done, but it just shows in this age of tablets and smartphones, there is still a place for real newspapers. We have seen how much students treasure the newspapers, especially when their name is printed on the page – that experience is priceless.” If you would like to know about the project, please visit our website www. schoolnewspaper.co.uk or email Tim Greenfield at tgreenfield@lincoln.ac.uk.

Lincoln College

...24+ advanced learning Have you considered going back to College but been put off by the costs? Have you wanted to retrain, but felt it was too much of a financial risk?

Well, a new initiative by the government will allow you to retrain with no upfront costs. Called 24+ Advanced Learning Loans, this scheme operates very similarly to the University loans system. In short, you take out a loan to pay for the costs of your course, and only start to pay it back when you have left your course and earn over £21k per year. Your household income isn’t taken into account, and there is no credit check. The amount you can borrow depends on your course, and the tuition fees - the money you borrow will be paid directly to the College on your behalf. The choice of courses that you can get a loan for is wide and includes A Levels, Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates and Diplomas plus Advanced and Higher Level Apprentices. These courses are available across a wide

variety of subject areas including business, accounting, construction, engineering, hair and beauty. In addition, you can also access a loan to study on the Access to Higher Education course: this course is an intensive course to get people prepared to study for a degree. The very first loan repayments will be made in April 2016 – and only then if you are earning over the £21k threshold. Your repayments are based on what you earn, not how much you borrowed. So for example, if you earn £22k, your monthly repayment will be £7. To find out more, please visit www.direct. gov.uk/advanced learning loans or www. lincolncollege.ac.uk/ 24_advanced_learning_ loans or contact Lincoln College on 01522 680680 or email enquiries@lincolncollege.ac.uk.

The Newark Academy

looking to the future... Karine Jasper, the new principal of The Newark Academy explains her vision for the future. “I want The Newark Academy to be the first choice for students and parents in our catchment area. I want to stop the flow of young people leaving Newark every morning by making sure that everything they want and need from a school is available right on their doorstep. We are excited to be benefiting from a complete new build and are on schedule to move in 2015. Our physical surroundings are not our main focus though – how we teach, nurture and prepare our students for success in further study and the world of work is our primary concern. We were delighted to see our rise up the GCSE league tables published last month, and strive to climb even higher in the coming years. Outside of the classroom, we have started an exciting initiative to link with local businesses on enterprise activities.

We also continue to enhance our opportunities for extracurricular activities, such as our morning and afternoon study clubs and trips and visits. I firmly believe a close working relationship with parents and the community is crucial to the success of any school. I am always keen to meet and listen to parents of existing or prospective students. I feel honoured to be in the position to build on the solid foundation of The Newark Academy, and develop a school recognised beyond Balderton and Newark for excellence.” You can meet Karine Jasper, the new Principal, at local primary school parents’ evenings or alternatively please contact her on 01636 615000 or enquiries@thenewarkaca demy.co.uk to arrange a meeting.

Molly’s guide to... ...enterprising mums CLAIRE DIXON

WENDY ROSS I first realised there was a huge gap in professional childcare provision when, the parents I worked with asked me why I couldn’t go home with them and continue supporting them in their own homes. When my own children were small, I was very lucky that I had the help of my mum, but many families move away, especially in the Lincolnshire area where there are lots of forces families. With over 35 years of childcare experience, working in many different and diverse settings, I decided to look at childcare from a different angle and find out what parents really want. I now provide nannies that care, can be called upon at short notice and for whatever time the family needs them for. I am also a breast feeding counsellor with a wealth of experience and offer a breast feeding package which I can deliver in the family home to an expectant mother and her supporters.

In October 2011 my sister and I set up Trewly Bella Baby Boutique. I found out immediately I was pregnant after nearly four years of trying. I was ecstatic, but wondered how I would manage a new baby, my two other children and a new business. The business had to take a back seat until that is…September 2012! I had started to have doubts about returning to my other job as a HR Manager. Luckily for me I was made redundant in February 2012 so the decision was made for me and I could really focus on the business and be at home with my daughter. I have lots of plans for Trewly Bella Baby Boutique; selling online, exhibiting at events as well as continuing to host parties. Organising charity events is another real love of mine and to date I have organised 13 ranging from Charity Balls to Fun days.

Lincoln Drill Hall

...do you know the Drill? More and more people are discovering the family-friendly Lincoln Drill Hall. For example, every Monday morning during term-time, the Drill Hall hosts the Happy Monday Club in the Café Bar, a creative play session for under-fives, with music, dance, storytelling and crafts. It costs £3 per child and is free for accompanying adults. Marketing manager, Gavin Street, says: “Events such as the Happy Monday Club are becoming really popular, but we want to invite people who are yet to visit to check out the Café Bar at any time. It is a great place for families to pop in after they’ve been to the library or have been in town doing some shopping. “We have a healthy, delicious menu; comfy chairs; a toy area for little ones and often there is live music.” Plus: Did you know you can hire a room at the Drill Hall? Bunnies, overloading on chocolate and colouring in eggs - as if I only needed one reason not to love Easter

...Daddy Day Care

And sadly that number of seasonal irritants is growing as the marketeers of big firms think up new ways to celebrate this supposedly religious festival. I saw a ‘Traditional Easter Roast’ advertised by a supermarket the other day, like it has been happening for years - with a picture of a family getting together to feast on a horse pulled straight from the oven. Sorry I meant beef - don’t know how that got in there… However, there is one positive to Easter - Bank Holidays. I’m sure all parents of young children who read this will be appreciating that right now the weather is nearly up to a balmy 15 degrees, sunlight occasionally

pours like wine through the window and we can finally get our kids outdoors without fear of death by snowmageddon - the avalanche of warnings about snow and cold weather by the national media which results in empty shelves at the shops, heating turned up to tropical conditions and an inexplicable desire to buy a plastic shovel. I found the icy weather and snow we had this year utterly annoying. After day of making snowmen and throwing snowballs, that’s it, the snow is just sitting there. And once someone has retreated indoors that’s pretty much it until the snow disappears - which could be days. “I’m not coming over because of the snow.” “The football is cancelled because of the snow”, “We better not go out because of the snow....” etc, etc. In the end you find yourself sitting with your kids from 7am surrounded by Peppa Pig DVDs and playdough thinking somehow this will be enough to get through to bedtime in 12 hours’ time. At first it feels like a fun challenge everyone is cosy on the sofa, the snow is falling outside and even though its early February you see yourself as Bing Crosby in White Christmas, romantically enjoying being stranded with your family. By 9.30am, you feel like John Wayne in The Longest Day - wondering how you will lead your platoon to the relative safety of bath-time. So right now I see Easter, and springtime in general, as quite an exciting time, almost like a reawakening after the hibernation of winter. The boys can go out without six layers of clothes on and have a good run around. As they approach 4-years-old in the summer,

molly’s guide • issue 5 • Easter 2013

the world is an increasingly interesting place - big cars, boats, animals, and so on. Once you’re out of the house there’s so much to see and do, time flies and it’s fun for everyone. So for that reason, Easter as a celebration of general egginess doesn’t excite me. We’ve still got chocolate left from Christmas, colouring in eggs just reminds me of a bald bloke I once knew who had a fetish for make-up and the Easter bunny is more ludicrous to explain than Father Christmas. “Yes boys, you know a jolly man in a red coat came down our chimney at Christmas and gave you presents? Well now a rabbit has spent the morning hiding chocolate in the garden… in the garden… yes…it’s perfectly normal behaviour.” And on that note, I’d like to say have a great Easter and appreciate getting outdoors again. Although knowing my luck it’ll be snowing.
