Molly’s news...
A school with a difference! Lincoln Circus School is a none profit community group, aimed at children and their families, which organises and runs events across the city including weekly sessions, holiday clubs and community events. Many children feel somewhat put off by the more common sports and team games, finding it difficult to engage and interact to experience physical play. This can lead to unhealthiest, a sense of under achievement or simply boredom. Circus skills are a unique and exciting range of fun sports and physical activities, providing many benefits such as improved concentration, confidence, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and much more! Circus skills are a fantastic way to get kids engaging with others in a fun, friendly and supportive atmosphere while learning many new skills that they may not otherwise encounter.

keeping you informed with local events and activities LCFC Youth Academy fundraising plan kicks off Faced with the challenge of raising in the region of £50k in order to survive, it’s been an exciting & successful year in many ways for Lincoln City FC’s Youth Academy, as Head of Youth Damian Froggatt now reflects.
“Many kids always say that they can’t do something, even before they tried it. With our enthusiasm we encourage kids to try what they believe they can’t do which makes them feel awesome when they finally achieve it. After that they come out with so many ideas, some that I haven’t even thought about!” Growing up spending a lot of her childhood with video games, Bekki knows how easy it can be for kids to stay at home & play computer games rather than going outside to play. She aims to get young people doing something more skilled & active with their time than computer games. ‘If I had something like this when I was younger I’d definitely have gone out more and made new friends! This generation of children seems to focus even more on technology and isolation which is a huge shame as kids are missing out on so much that they could be learning and experiencing.’ Karl & Bekki run Lincoln Circus School alongside their full time work as entertainers at Party Workshops. With their brightly coloured circus workshops and highly amusing walk around characters, they attend events all over the UK!
“ My kids love having an activity that’s different.”

The 2013-14 season kicked off with the launch of the Academy’s fundraising plan – the Future Imps Fund – with the aim of building new and innovative business partnerships at the same time as raising the profile of the Academy in the local community. Former academy graduates Conner Robinson, Lee Frecklington and Jack Hobbs backed the campaign and we kicked off by helping to open the new High Street Costa Coffee outlet. More partnerships emerged as we struck deals with national clothing retailer Hawkshead Outdoor, and more recently Cool Milk which supplies milk into primary schools. Many more new sponsorship deals followed, plus, we backed the City of Lincoln’s ‘Hirebike’ scheme aimed at getting more people cycling through the city centre. On the football front, Norwich City were crowned the Under 14 Keith Alexander Memorial Tournament winners, while our schoolboys enjoyed some extra special coaching sessions with the club’s Under 18 apprentices as well as members of the first team squad including Paul Farman and Mo Fofana. And midway through the season some of our youngest players enjoyed a visit to Everton’s academy. The year was capped off when the Academy Under 18 team won the Midland Youth Cup at Shrewsbury, and this and all our other achievements were only possible because of the fantastic hard work and commitment of our volunteers, parents, coaches, supporters and of course our many sponsors and investors who have helped the Academy achieve its goal and secure its future for the benefit of the many talented young local footballers who are at the heart of everything we do. Girls in Lincolnshire celebrate Big Birthday Brownie in style May 1st, 2014: Hundreds of girls across Lincolnshire have embarked on a year of fun, adventure and friendship to celebrate a very special occasion - The Big Brownie Birthday. This year marks a century of fun, friendship and community action as Girlguiding’s most iconic section – the Brownies – turns 100. Across the UK thousands of girls are celebrating this very special birthday by tackling challenges big and small – from carrying out acts of kindness to taking on rafting, rock-climbing and zip wiring and raising awareness of issues affecting girls in the UK and worldwide. And Brownies in Lincolnshire have been playing a leading role in this party-of-a-lifetime- taking part in a host of exciting girl-only activities across the county, making new friends and having fun. So far this year hundreds of girls have embarked on thrilling Star Quest Adventure days at schools and

local community centres in Boston, North Hykeham and Grantham - which even featured a special appearance by the UK’s Chief Guide, Gill Slocombe. These cosmic events saw the girls, all aged between 7 and 10, star in their very own cosmic story, travelling through three time zones to take part in challenges and new and exciting adventures. For Girlguiding’s Lincolnshire South County Commissioner, Wendy McCallum, The Big Brownie Birthday is a chance to shine a spotlight on the wonderful opportunities open to girls through Girlguiding. She said: “What has been wonderful about all these girl-only events has been seeing all of the Brownies mixing together and having great fun. Brownies take the lead and make decisions about what activities they want to do – they love taking on new and exciting challenges!” Brownies is open to all girls aged between seven and 10. Groups meet regularly and go on day trips, sleepovers, camps and holidays. They learn new

Celebrating 100 years of the Brownies hobbies, explore other cultures and get adventurous outdoors through a programme called the Brownie Adventure. Wendy said: “The name reflects the exciting opportunities, challenges and fun that is Brownies. During their Adventure they can extend their knowledge and abilities by working towards Brownie interest badges covering a huge range of activities.” Brownies groups across Lincolnshire have lots more exciting events planned to continue The Big Brownie Birthday party. These include Stay Away adventures – a chance for the girls to have an extra-special Brownie holiday experience in an exciting venue. There will also be parties and adventure days where girls will get to try their hand at raft building, climbing and circus skills. Meanwhile many groups have been working towards their Big Brownie Birthday Challenge – a new activity pack for Brownies to do at their meetings. Activities include: • Making and racing dragon boats • Building bug houses • Making fake wounds and learning how to treat them • Making a solar filter to use the power of the sun to clean dirty water, • Trying out a high-ropes course, climbing trees and building dens. The Challenge empowers Brownies to make their own decisions, develop new skills and celebrate their Big Brownie Birthday – and there’s a special badge to collect at the end. Emily from Grantham Brownies said: “I like Brownies because it’s fun seeing friends from school but also making new friends.”
Brownies started in 1914 when younger girls – seeing the opportunities older girls were being offered in Guides – called for something for them too. Among the badges today’s Brownies can earn are Communicator, World Traveller, Science Investigator, World Issues, Watersports and Wildlife Explorer.
Corrine of 28th Lincoln Brownies added: “All Brownies do a good turn a day to help someone else and keep their Brownie Promise.”
There are thousands of Brownies in Lincolnshire - supported by hundreds of amazing volunteers – some of whom are students at local colleges and the University. Wendy said: “Being a volunteer is brilliant fun, it’s wonderful watching the girls develop their confidence and I’ve also made some great friends. We are always on the lookout for more volunteers to support our groups across Lincolnshire. Volunteering with Girlguiding is flexible and we provide lots of support and training. Come and check us out – you might be surprised at what you find!” To find out more about Girlguiding, the UK’s largest charity for girls & young women contact Girlguiding PR Officer Cat Ferris on 0207 592 1733 or visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/ or call 0800 1 69 59 01.

Canwick Park Golf Club
Why golf?!! At Canwick Park Golf Club we encourage junior golf and should a youngster decide to take up the sport we will encourage that individual to play golf at a level they are comfortable with. Golf is a sport that teaches youngsters and adults alike some very important life skills, it is a sport that can be played very well by an 8 year old as well as an 80 year old whether male or female, there are no barriers in golf. As well as learning how to play, youngsters will take away a wealth of knowledge. Etiquette, or how to behave on the golf course, in the club and the respect shown to others and to yourself are all skills that follow a young person, for the rest of their lives. By playing with all groups beginners soon learn new skills which encourages all players to be respectful, polite, show good manners & to play fair. These skills are for life and can be used in everyday situations. Our golf taster sessions at Canwick Park Golf Club will give youngsters the opportunity to “have a go” at a sport they may otherwise have overlooked, (who knows there may be the next Rory Mcilroy or Alex Peters among them). The day will be about youngsters having fun with approximately 4 hours of golf with a break for lunch
is my belief that all children be given the “ Itopportunity to enjoy as many sports as possible. ” George Wilkinson, Junior Organiser
sandwiched in the middle. The afternoon session will see some group competitions and skill challenges. At the end an assessment would be made on each youngster with a recommendation being made to the parents as to the next step. We are also running a number of Saturday sessions meeting at the Club at 10am for those who have already attended the Tri-Golf day and some youngsters that George already has on his coaching books. The Saturdays are 5th & 19th July, 2nd, 16th & 30th August, 13th September, 4th & 18th October. This course is aimed at the same age group but for those who have already attended some type of golf instruction before. This carries a one off £5 registration fee for the whole coaching period. All equipment will be supplied by Canwick Park Golf Club. We recommend good footwear (trainers are acceptable). Warm clothing with a waterproof jacket preferred and trousers/jeans for girls.

Lincoln Drill Hall
See great live shows & get creative at Lincoln Drill Hall this Summer!
Lincoln Drill Hall is a great place to spend time with the family and the perfect environment to introduce children to the arts and get them involved.
The venue’s Summer season includes a bumper programme of live shows specifically aimed at younger audiences – from tiny tots to teenagers – plus events the whole family can enjoy together.
the breath-taking show ‘Strike!’, which uses intense physicality and humour, innovative aerial structures and a deluge of cardboard boxes to blur the boundaries between circus and theatre.
Kicking off the season is the award-winning ‘Too Many Penguins?’, a show for 1- 4s that packs fun, laughs… and an awful lot of penguins into the mix. The unique and brilliant interactive performance ‘The Flying Machine’ invites children to build, crew and fly their creation to incredible destinations.
Over the Summer there are also two outings for ‘Diddy Disco’, the venue’s funky dance parties for under 7s and their happening parents, and ‘The Happy Monday Club’, the weekly creative play sessions for under 5s, runs through until the middle of July.
There are two great book adaptations Bamboozle Theatre bring Julia Donaldson’s ‘Jack and the Flumflum Tree’ to vivid life with puppetry, beautiful songs and their trademark multi-sensory style, while Illyria returns to the city with another Roald Dahl classic, performing ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ in the open air at Lincoln Castle. Bransby Horses
Looking for fun for all the family? Open all year round and free of charge Bransby Horses offers an educational day out with pony cuddles galore. Funded entirely by public donations, it is you that helps to transform the lives of equines, rescue and rehabilitate them in the hope of a bright future. One pony in particular who has benefited greatly from the support of Bransby Horses is Moses; a one week old foal abandoned in a ditch near Mablethorpe. With no mother or means to sustain himself, Moses is a very luck boy who was found, received emergency care and will have a secure future with us. After having around the clock feeding from a specially designed bucket with teats to mimic his mothers and veterinary attention, he is growing into a very strong, handsome young colt. It was decided Moses needed a role model and Brace who is a sensible Shetland stood up to the challenge. Previously being a hands on dad with foals, he has kindly taken him under his wing to shown him the ways of being a pony. For those unable to have their own horse or pony, our Visitor & Education Centre provides all the information you need to adopt a horse. Why not treat yourself to home-made cakes, fresh local coffee and hot snacks from the Feedroom Café?

Marshall’s Yard
New business gets ready to party at Marshall’s Yard! A brand new children’s party venue has been launched in Gainsborough this month offering a unique new service to parents and youngsters. One of the Pattern Store units at Marshall’s Yard, which can be found at the rear of the centre, has been transformed in the new party venue where Allsorts Children Entertainment are offering a great range of packages aimed at children of all ages - from tiny tots to early teens. The business is owned by Rebecca Cross who has worked in the field for the last five years from her Scunthorpe base and has more than 20 years’ experience of working in childcare. Rebecca said: “I absolutely love the venue here as we are so close to the heart of the town centre and Marshall’s Yard. “I’m really excited about building a loyal customer base in Gainsborough for the regular programme of services we offer but also welcoming families from further afield who want to plan something special for their little one’s birthday.” The studio will also run pre-prom parties, baby issue 11 • Spring 2014
discos, baby gym sessions as well as toddler stay and play groups. Rebecca also plans to run karaoke and disco afternoons for vulnerable adults as well a host of other services and events for parents and children. “We have got so many ideas and are looking to provide a great service in a fun, safe and welcoming environment,” she said. Allsorts will specialise in children’s parties with packages ranging from £150 for a basic party to £200 for something more bespoke. Packages can include a disco, games, candy buffet and pampering area including temporary glitter tattoos. A celeb inspired dress up ‘disco-diva’ party is also offered for the VIP’s aged nine plus. Disney princesses and Superheroes have already proved popular at Marshall’s Yard during their frequent weekend visits to introduce themselves to the young shopper’s in the area. Centre Manager, Jackie Helliwell, said: “It’s great to welcome another new business to the centre offering something completely different. We wish Rebecca and her team all the very best in their new venture here at Marshall’s Yard.”

University of Lincoln
Summer Scientist Week is back for its fourth year and it promises to the best yet! The School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln invites children from 3-10 years old (and their parents) to become scientists in a morning or afternoon of free fun games and exciting research studies. Children take part in a variety of research games which explore fascinating aspects of how children develop, for example, how do we pay attention to things around us, how do we learn to share, how can we coordinate our hands and how do children approach risky decisions? Each of these studies is a game children play before we explain and show the clever ways in which we measure behaviour. In between these research games, children are entertained by
a host of other fun activities led by a team of trained psychology students. For parents who want to take a break from science fun beckons the friendly café, free wifi and papers. And every scientist goes home with a great gift! The event fills up fast, so book your place now. This year the dates have changed we will be running this year from 4-8 August (incl.) Come and join us for science and fun!

Visiting a woodland in spring can be a magical experience Flowers that have lain dormant over the cold winter months have sprouted leaves and bloomed. Carpeting the woodland floor with blue, yellow and white with splashes of pink are bluebells, celandines, wood anemones and spikes of early purple orchids. The flowers are exploiting the brief moment in time when warm sunlight drenches the woodland floor.

Once the trees have fully unfurled their leaves and cast their shade, the flowers will fade. As well as these colourful and showy flowers, there’s other wildlife in the woods too. Woodlands are great places for nature trails: see how many signs of animals you can see or hear. Listen for the drumming of woodpeckers as they hit their beaks rapidly against hollow branches. Woodpeckers nest in tree trunks, chipping out a nesting hole from the wood, usually at least 10 feet off the ground. Birds can be difficult to spot amongst the leaves of the trees. Luckily at this time of year, many of them are singing. The trained ear can pick out many

different bird species from the cacophony of sound but there are also a few easy ones to listen out for. Great tits sing loudly and sound like they are singing “teacher teacher” repeatedly. Chiffchaffs actually sing their own name “chiff-chaff, chiffchaff”. If it’s been raining, look for footprints in the mud. You’ll be able to tell if any other people have been there before or if it’s just other animals in the wood. Different animals leave different footprints: fox prints look like dog prints, badger prints are wider and have five toes, deer have hooves with two ‘toes’. There may also be the delicate prints of birds’ feet. The eagle-eyed wildlife spotter looks closely for creatures that hide themselves away. On the leaves of trees and brambles there are sometimes strange patterns; like someone has drawn random lines with a felt-tip pen. These are actually tunnels inside the leaf, lest behind by a leaf-mining insect larva (the young, worm-like stage of an insect similar to the caterpillar of a butterfly). The leaf-miner lives inside the leaf, eating it and leaving the pattern of tunnels. More than 900 insect species are known to mine leaves in this way in the UK, most of them being moths, flies, sawflies and beetles.
The leaves of trees like oak get eaten by so many insects and other animals it does seem sensible for the tree to get rid of them in the autumn and start again with fresh leaves in the spring.
