Welcome... Welcome to the summer edition of Molly’s Guide. It might be the magazine’s 12th edition but I’m especially excited as it’s my first writing for it.

I’m just saying hello for now and introducing myself and my family but I’m looking forward to investigating all things parenting in and around Lincoln and Newark from the autumn edition onwards. If you want to say hello back to me sooner than that then look out for me on the Molly’s Guide website where I’ll also be popping up with a regular blog including covering news and events in between. I’ve been privileged to live in the Lincoln area for most of my life and to have worked for many different county organisations and businesses discovering the city through them. But since having my son Luke, now 22 months old, I’m rediscovering it again in yet another - very fun! - way.

And, as I’m even more excited to write, as my husband James and I are expecting our second child in December, I’m looking forward to seeing it through another person’s eyes again. I know there’ll be lots to cover, especially in editions like this one that span the summer holidays and initial back to school days, so if you’d like to see information on a particular topic or are organising a family event then please just drop me an email to let me know. (Karen@mollysguide.co.uk) Meanwhile let’s all hope for a summer of paddling pool weather!

Car-buying conundrum Okay, confession time – I like nice cars but that’s about as far as my automotive expertise goes. You can imagine then, how I was overcome with sheer panic at the prospect of buying one for the first time after 20 years of company car driving. Although I’m a strong-minded businesswoman, it was a real fear that I’d be coerced into spending too much on something I really didn’t want to buy. After all, car dealers see a pair of heels and they smell vulnerability, don’t they? Well, not at Just Audi VW on Lincoln’s Outer Circle Road, it seems. All that initial apprehension I felt ebbed quickly away when I got chatting to James Stone. Not only did he listen to my trivial list of criteria – yes to diesel and no to red paint or something an old woman might drive – he did so without laughing. Not even a smirk. Once he’d established how much my budget would stretch to, he showed me models that met my needs. And because I’d not felt pressured or patronised I was soon behind the wheel of my new Audi A3 S-Line. Great to know exemplary customer service is alive and well. Dr D’s Science Days

Making science fun! There is a wide-spread misconception that science is complicated, and therefore not suitable for younger children, but nothing could be further from the truth!

by Dr Vicki Dennison

Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them, which is the essence of being a scientist. Especially at an early age, children learn at an incredible pace, soaking up information and learning through experimentation – Everything is new and each new experience provides more information to learn from. Think about it… The most common question asked by most children is “Why?”… They have a thirst for knowledge, and that is what makes working with them such a joy! The aim of Dr D’s is to make Science fun for 5 to 11 year-olds. Initially my focus was entirely on schools, then I realised that there were wider options for having fun with science, and started offering science themed birthday parties. Now I share my MAIN: Children are fascinated by chemical reactions. LEFT: Hands-on science! Photos: Tomato Frog Productions

love of science with people at a whole range of events across Lincolnshire, the East Midlands and the whole of the UK thanks to my involvement with BBC Science. These are exciting times for budding scientists in KS1 and KS2, as from September the Primary curriculum is changing. The new curriculum gives pupils the opportunity to study a wider range of science topics, and will hopefully inspire them to be see the wonder in even more aspects of the world around them. There is also a greater emphasis on scientific enquiry... That’s a fancy way of saying “trying things out”! This is where the type of activity days offered by companies such as Dr D’s could provide an extra element of excitement and entertainment for pupils. One of the best things about my job is that I get to see children doing science without even realising that’s what they’re doing... They think they’re just playing and having fun... which they are, but in a way that builds their scientific enquiry skills. It always makes me smile when the children have completed the instructions they’ve been given and, instead of sitting back and doing nothing, they start coming up with new ideas and new experiments using the equipment I’ve provided... Once you set them off investigating things there’s just no stopping them! There are options for covering the cost of science activities with grants available from organisations such as STEMnet (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths network). When I set up Dr D’s Science Days one of the first things I did was create a listing in the online STEM Directories, as STEMnet can provide funding to cover the cost of activities from companies registered on their site. Activity days come at a cost, but the benefits are priceless! Activities delivered by a specialist really do provide an experience which children will remember, and talk about, for years to come. issue 12 • Summer 2014

Lincolnshire Coastal Grazing Marshes Project

Hunting for treasure in the Lincolnshire Marshes The key to unlocking a vault containing around £9,000 of gold lies within Lincolnshire – can you crack the Riddle before 6th October 2014?

Somewhere hidden amongst the ancient pastures and rolling landscape of East Lindsey lies the answers to a riddle which will unlock a vault containing gold worth around £9,000. The unique treasure hunt will lead those taking part on a journey of knowledge and wonderment, through Lincolnshire’s Grazing Marshes, discovering local wildlife, history, myths and legends – a great way to explore the coast this year. So, fancy yourself a Riddler? Not frightened of bogles and boggarts? Then let the Riddle of the Marshes lead you on causeys and byways across time & place in a search for glittering gold. Atween windswept marshes and storm-torn coast, seven treasures are to be sought and their names writ down. But beware the limpelty-lobelty stranger, for if you cannot guess his name he’ll curse ye forever! Don’t forget Riddler, you must find the seven treasures, the stranger’s name and the pin number for the vault with the gold. You’ll find all the clues in the story or in the communities of the marshes. Nothing is hidden or buried. Everything is visible and in a public space. You just need to look. Don’t discount anything, it could be important... The Riddle of the Marshes Project has been developed to showcase a landscape teeming with wildlife and cultural history to visitors. It is hoped that the Riddle of the Marshes will help to tell the story of this landscape in a completely new way. Each ‘Riddle of the Marshes’ pack contains a short story, map and a ‘golden compass’ to guide you through the clues . Packs cost £15 and are currently available from Louth, Skegness and Mablethorpe, Tourist information centres, or can be ordered over the phone by ringing 01507 613134. See you in the marshes!

Ladybugs Fitness

Giving Mother Nature a helping hand Ladybugsfitness was developed by Cathy Burton, a Specialist Physiotherapist and together are a group of dedicated therapists and instructors who aim to serve the ‘women of Lincoln’ in regards to their health and fitness. We can offer specialised Pregnancy and Postnatal treatments and classes and can provide free online/telephone consultations if you are unsure which treatment you will be best suited to. A little word from our Reflexologist, Kathryn... Having not had the labour I’d planned first time, I wanted things to be different second time round. A friend recommended I try reflexology and I must admit I was a little sceptical, after all what difference could a foot rub make! Reflexology helps to balance the body and eliminate toxins whilst being extremely relaxing. In pregnancy regular reflexology can help with common niggles such as morning sickness, heartburn, swollen ankles, tiredness, pelvic girdle pain as well as helping Mummies-to-be to feel mentally prepared for labour and meeting their new baby. For me, I managed to have the home birth I wanted and I credit regular reflexology to helping this to happen. I just had to learn how to do that! I have had the privilege of training with two renowned maternity reflexologists, who are

also doulas and former nurses and midwives. Eden Reflexology & Complementary Therapies was born. I am proud to be associated to Ladybugsfitness as their resident Reflexologist and treatments are available from a beautiful log cabin treatment room in my garden in Glentworth or at clinics in Saxilby or Gainsborough. If you would like to speak to me about Reflexology, please contact me on 01427 668897 or 07747 471752. To view more of what we can offer, please contact us on 07587 246542, email: info@ladybugsfitness.co.uk or visit www.ladybugsfitness.co.uk

Bransby Horses

Summer holiday fun at Bransby Horses! The horses, ponies, donkeys & mules are all waiting to meet you this summer for fun, crafts and lots of hands on learning. Free admission, Bransby Horses provides an affordable, educational day out that caters for all the family. With over 370 animals on site, and more than 600 acres of fields with walkways, there are plenty of characters to meet and plenty to see. The Horse Sense Room provides an insight into how horses view the world and what it really takes to care for an equine. Our Autumn Fayre is set to be the biggest, most action packed yet. Demonstrations, hands on activities and parades of rescued animals are just the beginning! Why not treat yourself to home-made cakes, fresh local coffee and hot snacks from the Feedroom Café? Bransby Horses is wheel chair and dog friendly so offers a great day out for the entire family! In recent months we have been reporting the tales and mischief of our much adored Moses, but have you seen his new accomplice?

A handful of dates for your summer diary...

Back in April when Moses was found abandoned in a cold wet ditch, there was another little foal in Leeds fighting a very similar battle. Hope Pastures (an equine welfare charity based in Leeds) took him under their wing and nursed him back to health. Aptly named Easter, the charity found, like Moses, he needed either some parental guidance or a foal his age to play and grow up with.

Both Bransby Horses and Hope Pastures put their heads together and decided it would be beneficial for the boys to meet and become life-long friends. Arriving in Lincolnshire on 24th May, Yorkshire lad Easter now calls it his home, whilst remaining humble and grateful for the time and effort Hope Pastures gave him.

Now double the trouble, the pair are wreaking havoc at our Animal Reception Centre. Whilst making sure they are fit and healthy enough to join the Bransby Horses herd, the boys are investigating every nook and cranny, seeing what is chewable and taking much needed foal power naps to ensure they have enough energy to grow big and strong. The pair are now inseparable and their futures are set to be bright, fun filled and secure.

On 9 August, the Drill Hall and Lincoln Castle present Illyria’s wonderful adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ in the open air at the castle. Moving into the Autumn, Zest Theatre are back with ‘Gatecrash’, a ground-breaking, interactive show for ages 14+ that uses Silent Disco technology to put the audience at the heart of a teenage house party. Nicholas Allan’s fabulous book ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ is brought to the stage on 11 October in a hilarious and very silly production for ages 3+, while on 22 & 23 October, the playful, funny and moving play ‘Chalk About’ (for age 7+) explores how we see ourselves and others and features dance, chat and one perfect scene containing everything you could wish for! Written especially for parents to enjoy with their children, ‘Old Macdonald’ (1 November) is a fun filled show that brings to life all the best loved characters from the original nursery rhyme along with a magical medley of games, giggles and sing along songs. And rounding off the year is our spectacular family panto ‘Aladdin’ (9 December - 4 January) packed with fantastic characters, songs, jokes and special effects, including an interactive CGI genie and a magical flying carpet. Lincolnshire Rural & Community Touring

Professional Theatre on your doorstep! Lincolnshire Rural & Community Touring is part of a network of over 40 rural touring schemes across the UK, providing access to high quality arts events for people in rural areas. The programme has brought professional touring theatre, dance and music to rural and community venues in Lincolnshire for over 10 years, supported by local volunteers and promoters who select and host performances, sell tickets and publicise the shows. Venues for the programme range from village halls to schools and community centres, each providing a warm welcome to both audiences and visiting performers. The programme runs from September each year, through to the following June, and has an accompanying Lincolnshire Rural & Community Touring brochure listing all events which will be available in August. The scheme hosts several Children’s Theatre companies and this year is pleased to be touring The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Garlic Theatre who will conjure a bewitching tale, full of mystery and enchantment, with its blend of physical theatre, humour and technical wizardry. Puppets, mime and a dash of real magic will leave adults and children enthralled. Also on the tour is Proteus Theatre and Rapunzel. This is the story of a young girl with an overbearing mother, a prince of a boyfriend with vertigo, and very, very badly behaved hair. Proteus brings you a hair-raising, foot tapping, high flying ‘wash and blow dry’ of a show, with music, puppets, gravity defying actors and a guarantee of bad hair days...

Storybook Days

Where books come to life! Storybook days offer creative workshops that include drama, craft, music, culinary creations and games, all inspired by well loved children’s books.

Over the summer holidays we currently have 8 different workshops which take place in Nettleham and Nocton, both near Lincoln. Our Frozen inspired workshops are proving very popular. Using the story as inspiration we will make Marshmallow Snowmen, as well as crowns and frozen lollipops. Other activities will include singing, games and drama. Our Magic Far Away Tree workshop is always well attended with the highlight being the creation of our own sweetie trees. We will also be visiting the Land of Birthdays, having a picnic and creating our own new lands. We cater for around 20 children per day and always make at least 4 crafts. We often use the outdoor environment for treasure hunts, parachute games, storytelling and quests.

“The most amazing story book days where the children enter a magical, imaginative world and really become involved with the story of the book. Using so many creative skills, from drama, cooking, sewing, drawing, crafts, dancing, going on walks and picnics. My little girl comes home so happy and full of chatter and excitement about her day. She loves these days and I will continue to recommend these days to my friends, if I could star rate them I would definitely give them 5 star!” - Lucy’s mum We also run workshops in Libraries, Schools, Children’s Centres, Farm Parks and Festivals. University of Lincoln

Summer Scientist Week is back for its fourth year and it promises to the best yet! The School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln invites children from 3-10 years old (and their parents) to become scientists in a morning or afternoon of free fun games and exciting research studies. Children take part in a variety of research games which explore fascinating aspects of how children develop, for example, how do we pay attention to things around us, how do we learn to share, how can we coordinate our hands and how do children approach risky decisions? Each of these studies is a game children play before we explain and show the clever ways in which we measure behaviour. In between these research games, children are entertained by

a host of other fun activities led by a team of trained psychology students. For parents who want to take a break from science fun beckons the friendly café, free wifi and papers. And every scientist goes home with a great gift! The event fills up fast, so book your place now. This year the dates have changed we will be running this year from 4-8 August (incl.) Come and join us for science and fun!

The Priory Academy LSST

A unique environment The Priory Academy LSST, one of the top performing non-selective State schools in the country, continues to flourish and build on its recent successes. Students and their families are attracted by the academy’s unique environment. The achievement of academic excellence and the development of an individual’s true potential are pursued enthusiastically and successfully within the local, national and international communities. Students, from the day they arrive in Year 7, are encouraged to participate fully in all that the academy has to offer. It is expected that the relationship will last until, and even beyond, the time when they progress from Sixth Form to university and their chosen careers.

Judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in its most recent inspection, The Priory continues to post excellent examination results, including a 99% pass rate for five or more A*-C grades (including English and Maths) at GCSE. The aspirational emphasis also helps students progress to the country’s top universities, including Oxbridge and the rest of the Russell Group.

Parents and carers also appreciate and support the high expectations of achievement, behaviour and uniform that are established clearly and consistently.

The academy’s philosophy, known as The Priory Ethos, is designed to ensure that students appreciate the excitement of learning, the rewards of personal challenge and the importance of helping others. In this way, they are helped to become true citizens of the world.

The Priory’s exceptional learning environment, thoughtfully fostered for many years, has been complemented in recent times by the addition of a new sports hall, planetarium and Sixth Form study centre.

The journey to ‘outstanding’ is in full flow at The Newark Academy

A recent OFSTED visit highlighted the improvements being made (particularly in the leadership of the school, and the Sixth Form) and we continue to relentlessly pursue the best outcomes for all students that attend our school each and every day. On the horizon is our new school building. We are delighted to be able to share initial plans for something we truly believe can help to transform education in Newark and become a hub for our local community. Planning has now reached advanced stages with our partners, Kier, ahead of building commencing in November 2016. The new building is scheduled to open in January 2016. Any students currently in year 6 will potentially experience almost 7 years in this modern, state-of-the-art learning environment.

to technology whenever required. Design and Technology will contain excellent CAD/CAM facilities and English and Maths classrooms will be designed with student achievement the primary concern. Drama will be able to make use of a modern studio and auditorium whilst maximum space will be made available for budding musicians to practice. All classrooms will be bright and airy to ensure all students are comfortable and ‘Ready to learn’ each and every day. Rooms will be larger than the standard sized classrooms often associated with typical new school buildings and there will be large external courtyards built into the design to ensure learning isn’t restricted to the classroom. We quite simply cannot wait for the local community to experience our new school building and state of the art facilities.

There will be excellent sporting facilities; a brand new modern sports complex with a large sports hall, activity studio and fitness studio, along with many outdoor sports pitches and a modern MUGA (multi-usegames-area). Modern technology will be at the forefront of The Newark Academy and there will be a total of 9 IT learning areas throughout the school, ensuring all students have access issue 12 • Summer 2014

Lincoln Dances

Get ready for another chance to dance... Dust off your dancing shoes – Lincoln Dances is heading back to the city for the third time. Dancing in the streets, free have-a-go workshops and a spectacular theatre show featuring professional dancers alongside local performers are the highlights of the event, which runs from July 19 to 26. There will be dancing in the streets as the festival – which is part of the Lincoln Live series of events across the city – gets off to a flying start with a day of dance displays in City Square in the heart of Lincoln on Saturday July 19. The day – which is always a bit hit with shoppers – runs from 10am-4pm and is free. “We’ll be out on the streets hoping to inspire, engage and get everyone dancing,” said Lincoln Dances director Sara Bullimore, a freelance arts consultant based in the city. “As usual we’ll be celebrating lots of different styles of dancing with performances from local groups including Footstepz Dance, Jumpstart, Dance Revolution, kNacKer’d Youth Dance, Rhythm in Movement, Classes with Kat and more. We are also welcoming 2faced Dance Company, who perform a fusion of street, break and contemporary dance, with their new show Two Old Men, which will take you on a life-long journey all the way to the pub!” Throughout the week the popular series of free ‘have a go’ workshops which were introduced at the festival last year will be back. They kick off with Ballet for Beginners with Luke Shepherd at the Priory Witham Academy dance studio in De Wint Avenue, Lincoln, on Tuesday July 22 from 6-7pm. The session is aimed at ages 11 to adult. On Wednesday July 23 Ruthba Choudhury is leading a hip-hop dance session for ages 11-17 at Sudbrooke Drive Community Centre in Lincoln from 6-7pm. Toddlers and their parents are welcome at an Early Years Creative Movement session led by Oksana Tyminska on Thursday July 24 from 3-4pm at the Priory Centre in Colegrave Street, Lincoln. The workshops end with a contemporary masterclass for dance students and graduates led by Ian Dolan on Friday July 25 at the Priory Witham Academy dance studio from 5-7pm. Sara explained: “The workshops are produced by artsNK in association with Lincoln Dances and issue 12 • Summer 2014

professional dancers and practitioners. We just want people to come along and have a go and maybe discover a new style of dance that they really enjoy.” Free places for the sessions can be booked at sara.bullimore@googlemail.com And once again Lincoln Dances will culminate in a spectacular finale show at Lincoln Drill Hall on Saturday July 26 at 7.30pm featuring professionals and invited guests performing alongside dancers of all ages from across Lincolnshire. Dance artists Neil Callaghan and Simone Kenyon will open the night with their piece Someone Something Someone and the show will also feature Grantham-based Chantry Dance Company, Lincoln Dance Company, RAW Youth Dance, Rhythm in Movement, the Priory City of Lincoln Academy, Jumpstart, DWS, Footstepz Dance, RedXco and kNacKer’d Youth Dance. Visit The Seaside

Beside the seaside is best There is nowhere quite like the seaside for the perfect holiday whether travelling alone, with friends or with family.

The sights, the smells, the food, the atmosphere, the fun, the walks, the donkey rides, the pleasure fairs and the bracing air all add to the experience. Even research shows that we generally like to be beside the seaside more than anywhere else. And if the sun shines it just brings an extra bonus to a delightful setting. According to a study done a couple of years ago by the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, a holiday on the coast is significantly more likely to create a feeling of wellbeing than taking a break in a city, a park or even the countryside. Of course along the East Coast, it is only a short walk inland to find rolling countryside and with big cities and towns close by or a simple bus ride away, holidaymakers can have the best of it all - and return to the sea to find that all important tranquillity or hours of fun for the children of the family. Theme parks, wildlife and nature reserves, funfairs, and days out are too many to mention along the bustling coastline but the Visit the Seaside website offers much information on the

best places to go, plus downloadable vouchers here www.visittheseaside.com/vouchers/ to help visitors get the most from their trip. For those on a shoestring budget, there are many ways to have cost free family fun. Wide-eyed children with huge smiles on their faces will run headlong towards the sandy beaches with bucket and spade in hand and happily play all day, and a walk along the beach, sand in toes, is priceless. Many of the excellent hotels and B&Bs have entirely reasonable rates but camping has become a popular and cheaper alternative that gives an earthy feel to offset the vast blue swathes of ocean, spreading out for miles from the coast. Seaside towns such as Skegness, Mablethorpe, and Cleethorpes are also hugely popular destinations for friends looking for night life fun in the many bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. After all that fun, a good night’s rest follows and sleep descends, lulled by the sound of the gentle rolling waves which help with the feeling of relaxation and the knowledge that another day dawns in the best holiday environment available. A visit to the seaside is a holiday that you never want to end.

School of Choc

Get creative with chocolate School of Choc was established in 2011 with an idea in mind to host amazing parties for anyone who loves chocolate. I took over the school of choc in April 2013. I wanted everyone to be able to create their own spectacular chocolate gifts (or treats) and have fun while they were doing it! From chocolate shoes to pizzas and everything in between, we’ve got it all. In our amazing studio on the riverside in Gainsborough we have everything for a kids birthday parties, ladies nights or even a school or brownies. I love seeing everyone with their finished chocolate treats and hope to see more new faces too!

Added extras are also available too such as buffets, chocolate invitation bars, chocolate fountain.

The school of choc host chocolate making parties & workshops for all ages from 5yrs &up with up to 15 people attending. Larger groups please get in touch. You can theme your party too!

Coming soon - chocolate fairy door decorating - keep an eye on my facebook page for details. To find out more about our parties just visit my website or check out my Facebook page I can’t wait to see you there!

Ruddocks of Lincoln

Keeping the kids amused this summer Some, perhaps many, people think summer starts on midsummer’s day, despite the contradiction. It’s rather nice to have some things in life undefined, so whatever you think, it doesn’t make any difference one way or the other. At least the rain is warmer. Summer means holidays and holidays means keeping the kids amused for six weeks. Here at Ruddocks we are trying to do our bit to help. Up until about three years ago we ran art and craft courses, albeit mostly for adults. We had to stop doing them because the art and craft department was extended into the space used for workshops. Now, we are starting them again, both for adults and children, the latter particularly during the summer holidays. We have created a lovely space on the next floor up. Adult courses and workshops include art in all mediums, for both beginner and more experienced; and we are introducing many other courses and occasions, including “knit and natter”. See our website for further details. For the children, there is a range of workshops. See the ad for further details. If you happen to be going away (or maybe even if you’re not) Ruddocks has a selection of travel games. Compact and full of interest, they are guaranteed to keep the kids happy for at least… (please insert here span of attention of your children). Surprisingly, these games can also be a learning experience. Have you tried Brainbox? It comes in several versions, and we are currently working through “The Ancients”, which is definitely not for the squeamish. Also, if you haven’t yet tried Dobble, come into the shop and have a go. This really is one of those games which can be played by any age with an equal chance of winning. Not a lot of learning, but it’s fun. issue 12 • Summer 2014

And as the holiday nears its end (sorry to look so far forward) we will have all you need for the new school term. Well not quite all, but everything in the stationery line anyway. Our first K’nex day will be held on 29 August. There will be loads of K’nex to play with and offers galore so why not come bring your children along and see the benefits of K’nex and how much fun they are! Finally, when you’re shopped out, visit Henry’s for a relaxing tea or coffee. We have recently started using Burchill’s tea. Notice the difference. Henry’s sources produce from local producers wherever possible, and all of our cakes, scones and meals are freshly prepared in our own kitchen. We do not buy in ready-made meals. We have a special children’s menu for just £4 including drink, and we even have special children’s cutlery. I got fed up visiting cafes and being offered either full size cutlery or a (usually breakable and therefore dangerous) plastic spoon. There’s going to be a lot happening at Ruddocks over the next few weeks. We will be updating our web and Facebook pages so make sure you ‘like us’ and keep checking back. We hope to see you soon. Best wishes Henry Ruddock
