As we embark on a new year, we are so grateful to Club and Association Management Committees for the ongoing and active support of their Probus clubs and wider communities.

We are approaching the Annual General Meeting of Clubs, that provide opportunities for members to nominate for positions on their Management Committee. This is a meaningful way for members to contribute to the ongoing success of their club as well as the opportunities to strengthen relationships with other members. I encourage all members to consider joining their Club’s leadership team.

The past months have involved the formation of a number of working groups comprising of members willing to contribute their skills, expertise and advice. One such group is the Marketing Consultative Committee made up of Probus members from across Australia and New Zealand.

This group is working directly with our PSPL Team to provide their input on our future promotional and marketing programs including the development of our new website.

Another group has been formed in New Zealand to advise and assist with the arrangements and organisation of the 50th Anniversary of the first Probus Club in the South Pacific. As you may be aware, the first club was formed in Kapiti Coast in November 1974 and remains as popular and vibrant today.

We have convened a working group of enthusiastic volunteers from both North and South Island Clubs to assist with coordinating this celebration as a national/international event. This significant undertaking will be a shared vision and a commemoration of 50 years of Probus in New Zealand. This milestone will be a great rallying point for all Probus clubs and members and a great source of pride!

One of the primary objectives of Probus South Pacific is supporting all Clubs in membership retention and growth, helping to keep Clubs healthy and active. Our membership strategy is centred around a collaborative approach that sees us all working together for our mutual benefit.

Over time, our membership strategy has evolved and with that, so have the roles of Membership Representatives that include Ambassadors, Probus District Chairs and Rotary District Probus Chairs. We are most thankful for the valuable contribution by these individuals on a regional basis.

At the national level, each year, Probus South Pacific Limited (PSPL) seeks nominations from Probus Club members who wish to serve on the PSPL Board or on one of the PSPL Nominating Selection Committees (NSC).

The role of a PSPL Representative Member/

Director is, in conjunction with the Board, to ensure the continued growth and success of Probus in the South Pacific region. They are volunteer positions which previously required travel to Sydney on a quarterly basis. However, for the past three years, due to the pandemic, all meetings have been held via technological means with the exception of the Annual General Meeting in August.

We are now calling for nominations from Probus Club members to fill upcoming vacancies for the positions of Representative Member/Director in New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia and New Zealand. The term of office for successful candidates will be from August 2023 to August 2026.

We greatly appreciate the valuable contribution of the current Member/Directors for each of these areas of selection, Bill Killinger AM, Graeme Brown and Tony Blaber, respectively.

Members, particularly those who also have business experience in finance, accounting, communications, marketing, or as a public company Director, are urged to consider nominating. Given the large proportion of female Probians, we hope to see women who meet the criteria, nominate for these roles.

We ask any member who meets the criteria to consider this opportunity. Further information about the roles can be found on PSPL’s website or by contacting our Team.

Hopefully, like me, you are looking forward to creating new memories in 2023 and enjoying everything it has to offer.

Why planning is the secret to positive ageing

There are many elements and types of positive ageing, but at its core it is about handling the inevitable transition from one stage of life to another.

According to Brisbanebased positive ageing expert, Marcus Riley, how well we plan for these transitions will determine how effectively we deal with them.

The former chair and current director of the Global Ageing Network explains that positive people are proactive, not reactive.

“It’s up to you to take charge,” Mr Riley says. “We can be proactive by understanding what threatens our successful ageing and take pre-emptive action.

“For example, knowing relationships are important to our well-being means that we may need to take proactive steps to patch up a fraying friendship or family relationships.

“Planning is the secret to retaining control for as long as we live. Planning enables us to make the most of the choices that are available across all phases of later life.

“Often, people will leave planning for retirement, or setting themselves up for their later years, too late. So, start planning now to create the life you want.”

Here are Marcus Riley’s five planning tips for positive ageing.

1Identify what is important to you, and consider this when making any decisions

“We must identify what is personally important to us, reflecting on our priorities across a number of factors: our relationships of importance, the activities we value, the state of our finances, where we want to call home now and possibly later. It is vital to recognise what is best for us and consider this when making all decisions.”

2 Employment and retirement –planning is the key to ease the transition

“These days we have the opportunity, if we plan well, to avoid the abrupt end of work through retirement and instead work in a modified role, either part-time or in a less senior job, to ease the transition into retirement.”

3 Family role – plan for upcoming changes and how that affects your family role

“Because we are living longer today than at any time in history, family roles are much more fluid. It is important for us to consider what changes are likely in the future and plan accordingly; what family roles do I perform now and what will be required at later stages?”

FEBRUARY - MARCH 2023 ACTIVE RETIREES | 12 | WWW.PROBUSSOUTHPACIFIC.ORG
Health Why planning is the secret to positive ageing /

4

Wellness – recognise how we best sustain our physical and mental health

“Planning also means a preventative approach to trying to keep illness at bay and staying active enough to do whatever our heart desires by eating well, exercising and having regular medical health check-ups, starting now.”

5

Be adaptable

“Our plans must be adaptable, something that we’re constantly renewing and reviewing because our circumstances will inevitably change. Our aforementioned personal priorities will vary with changed circumstances or new thinking, therefore we must update or adjust our plans to remain conducive to our best living.”

7 Ways to stay healthy on a budget

Ways to stay healthy on a budget

With cost-of-living increases affecting every household in Australia, we may be watching our budget more closely than usual right now. Unfortunately, this can also mean slipping into bad eating habits – but that doesn’t have to be the case. The Heart Foundation is urging all Australians to remember that hearthealthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive.

Heart Foundation Director of Health Strategy, Julie Ann Mitchell, says a healthy diet is a key ingredient for protecting your heart during the ongoing waves of Covid and beyond.

“It’s more important than ever to keep up healthy habits and eat

nutritious foods during this time, and it doesn’t have to break the bank,” Mrs Mitchell said.

“There are some tips you can follow when doing your weekly shop to choose heart-healthy foods that will save money and avoid wasting food.

“Frozen vegetables, brown rice, chickpeas and tinned fish are just a few staples you can keep on hand for healthy and budget-friendly meals at home.”

Poor diet is the leading contributor to heart disease, Australia’s single biggest killer. Unhealthy, nutrientpoor foods make up more than onethird of the average person’s daily kilojoules.

“That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to cut back on highly processed products and put healthier foods in their trolleys – think plenty of fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains, a variety of healthy proteins and fats, and a smaller amount of animal-

based foods,” Ms Mitchell said.

Straight from the Heart Foundation, here are seven tips on how to keep your pantry healthy on a budget:

1 Make an action plan

Make a grocery list and stick to it. Check what you already have in your fridge and pantry and only buy what you know you will use to avoid wasting food.

2 Eat “the rainbow”

One of the best ways to stay healthy is to fill up on plenty of fruit and vegetables. The more colourful the mix, the better. Frozen or canned vegetables and fruits are good alternatives when fresh produce is hard to buy or too expensive, and they keep for longer. If you’re buying canned versions, however, try to choose the “no added salt” or “low salt” versions. Pick fruits canned in juice, not syrup.

3 Try to mix it up

Buy more plant-based sources of protein in line with the Heart Foundation’s updated dietary advice . Tinned or dried beans, lentils and chickpeas are cheaper and are healthy options for your pantry, or try tofu to keep in the fridge. Eggs or canned fish (such as tuna or salmon) are also cheaper and easy to prepare.

4 Choose cheaper cuts

Look for less expensive cuts of meat to use in stews, soups and casseroles. Cut off visible fat before cooking.

5 Go for wholegrains

Brown rice, wholegrain pasta and rolled oats are budget-friendly staples for healthy cooking. Swap white bread for a wholegrain loaf and freeze some of it.

6 Be smart with snacks

Go for a handful of unsalted nuts or a small plate of cut-up fruit to curb afternoon cravings. You could also buy popping corn and make homemade popcorn. It’s best to either have it plain (no added salt or butter) or flavour with other herbs and spices.

7 Ensure you hydrate properly

Skip the aisle of sugary soft drinks and energy drinks and make water the drink of choice. It’s healthy, hydrating and free.

A lifetime of helping others

Sparked by the love of his life, Bruce is leaving a gift behind in his Will. Will you?

Bruce Smith and his late-wife, Mavis, have left gifts in their Wills for Australian Red Cross after volunteering more than 30 years together. Through an enduring legacy of love shared between Bruce and Mavis, Bruce hopes that their impact will be felt by people in the future long after they’re gone.

Bruce has dedicated more than 30 years volunteering for Australian Red Cross. But it was through his love for his wife, Mavis, that sparked his interest in Red Cross when she began as a volunteer in the 1960’s.

Over the decades and since his retirement, Bruce has supported Red Cross in a range of areas – from picking up refugees from the airport and helping them settle into their new homes to providing psychosocial support to survivors of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in 2009.

While Mavis has since passed on, Bruce wants others to think about their contribution to helping others beyond this life.

“If you’ve been supporting a cause throughout your lifetime, then please don’t stop when you’re thinking about what’s going to happen after you leave.”

Bruce will be leaving a gift in his Will to Red Cross – just as Mavis did – and he hopes he can inspire others to do so too.

“I always think about ‘people helping people’ as being a motto

or a thought that l keep in mind, that you get more out of helping people than you can fully understand.”

This is the message that Bruce wants to pass on as his legacy: “It would certainly be a wish of mine that people would consider helping others in such a way that they continue to support the causes they care about after they’ve gone”.

Taming the trolley

Does your supermarket bill seem to keep mysteriously rising? Here are 10 clues to help you trace the possible culprits.

Hshock” – surprise at just how much you spent on the week’s shopping? Along with utilities, like heating and gas, the weekly shop is a big drag on our retirement savings, so here are some things to beware of when buying groceries.

Entering the premises without a list

We’ve all experienced getting home from the supermarket and realising we’ve forgotten something. Next most likely behaviour: we get it at the local convenience store where prices are higher.

Going gourmet

Supermarkets are being designed to be more like visiting market stalls, rather than just a series of aisles. You may find yourself buying the olive sourdough at the bakery instead of a loaf of sliced bread, or a wedge of brie at the deli instead of the homebrand cheddar.

Shopping more than once a week

The more often we visit the supermarket, the more likely we are to pick up a few unplanned extras. If we’re diving into the supermarket every night just before dinner, we’re likely to pick up whatever we feel like at that moment regardless of cost. If we plan a week of meals before we shop, it’s more likely we’ll balance some more expensive meals with some lower cost meals.

Not buying seasonal

There may be a beautiful display of oranges in summer, but they’re not likely to be local and that means they’ll be more expensive. If you stick to buying what’s in season it can be cheaper, and also have less food miles, so you will be saving money and the planet.

FEBRUARY - MARCH 2023 ACTIVE RETIREES | 31 | WWW.PROBUSSOUTHPACIFIC.ORG Finance Taming the trolley /

Overlooking specials and marked-down items

Buying meat when it’s on special and putting some in the freezer can reduce your grocery bill overall. So can looking for items that have been marked down, because they are close to their useby date. If it’s on sale and has plenty of shelf life left then stock up, and you’ll save money down the line.

The freezer is your frenemy

Ignore the pre-made meals and frozen pizzas – they will jack up your supermarket bill – and target frozen fruit and vegetables instead. If you’re only cooking for one or two, it can be a great way to ensure you always have the required number of fruit and veg on your plate without having to throw out something that’s gone off.

to cut through the packaging and size differences so you can compare like with like. According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), unit pricing allows consumers to compare different sizes within the same brand as well as other brands. Often, a larger pack of a product will have a lower unit price than a small or medium pack. However, it advises people to only buy the larger pack if it is not going to go to waste. Also, if you eat a larger pack in the same amount of time, it’s not necessarily going to be good value.

The ACCC also suggests comparing the unit price of loose and packaged versions of the same product. People generally assume the loose version is cheaper, but that’s not always the case.

Filling your trolley with brand names

Some people baulk at homebrand products, claiming they’re not the same quality as brand name products. But stocking up on homebrand basics can help keep a lid on grocery bills.

Often the shelves at eye-level carry the most expensive items of a particular type – you may remember the saying; “eye level is buy level.” Look at the lower or higher shelves, as that’s where the lower-priced items are likely to be found.

Buying the same products for years

Product manufacturers have a few tricks up their sleeves. The shrinking chocolate bar with the price that remains the same; the cereal box that has a smaller package inside; the soap that is redesigned with a concave so there’s less of it. While brand loyalty is great, if you’re getting less product for the same amount of money, it’s time to shop around.

You don’t have to enter the supermarket like you are going into combat, but with a few tricks of your own you can ward off the supermarket marketing and, ultimately, save some cash.

Time to downsize?

Over the last 3 years, home prices growth has seen some turbulence mostly influenced by the level of interest rates and Covid. We watched the prices drop at the beginning of Covid, then when interest rates were lowered, we saw the property sale prices rocket skywards. Units and house prices are moving at different rates. Now, after a string of monthly interest rate rises, the home sale prices are coming off with house sale prices decreasing at a faster rate than units^. Where property prices will go from here is heavily influenced by the interest rate movements controlled by the RBA.

With property prices dropping, is now a good time to sell and downsize?

Well that depends... where the money goes? You could spend it, bank it or put it ...

Into Superannuation

From 1 Jan 2023, those aged at least 55 years old may be eligible to contribute up to $300,000 each into super by using a Downsizer Contribution. Also, if you haven’t made any Non-Concessional contributions in the last 3 years, you could contribute up to $330,000 each. Altogether, you may be able to boost your retirement savings by $1.26 million (subject to the Total Super Balance cap of $1.7m each at last June 30). That may make a material difference to your retirement lifestyle by providing you with additional tax free income during your draw down years.

With property prices dropping, now could be the time to downsize and increase your lifestyle

Downsizer contribution rules

In summary, the main downsizer contribution rules are:

• The property sold has to be a qualifying dwelling such as a home, unit or apartment. It must meet the CGT main residence exemption.

• You are aged 55 or over from 1 Jan 2023.

• The home was owned by you or your spouse for at least 10 years prior to sale.

• The downsizer contribution is made within 90 days of change of ownership, and

• The contribution is made using the required ATO form.

Downsize your home to fit you / Advertorial Finance Downsize your home to fit you

It all looks simple enough, but with everything, it is the fine print that counts.

What if the home is owned in only one name?

If you own a home and your spouse lives with you in that home, the sale proceeds of the home can be used to make downsizer contributions for both you as the owner and your spouse. This could boost your collective super by up to $600,000 subject to the $1.7m Total Super Balance cap for each of you.

Owned or lived in your home for 10 years?

You need to have owned the property for 10 years, but you don’t have to have lived in it for the whole time. You do need to satisfy the CGT Home exemption test though.

Also, if you have subdivided, the sale proceeds need to be from the parcel of land with the home on it. If you have rented your property or subdivided, financial advice could help you navigate the fine print here.

Estate planning considerations

If one of you has children from a previous relationship, care needs to be taken to ensure your desired outcome is reached. Looking at where you would ultimately like the sale proceeds to end up will help you decide. The downsizer contribution is made “after-tax” and can boost your tax-free balance which is

not subject to 15% tax upon death when paid to adult (nondependent) children.

Superannuation may improve control of your legacy compared to a Will. However, giving home sale proceeds to a new spouse could reduce your children’s inheritance. Looking at the big picture of inheritance planning will help you weigh up your options.

Aged pension and care entitlements

If one of you is receiving the age pension, downsizing could reduce your pension entitlements and/or increase age care fees if you or your spouse are receiving care. However, if one of you is under age pension age, then you may be able to keep the contribution out of age pension/care calculations. Careful planning is required to determine the optimal amount of capital released by the downsize.

So is now a good time to downsize?

We can help you decide if downsizing will work for you by running the numbers and enable you to compare the different scenarios you are thinking about as well as prevent you from tripping on rules you didn’t know about.

How to buy, sell and make money with Facebook Marketplace

Gone are the days (well, mostly) of garage sales and “For Sale” signs in windows. These days, the majority of buying and selling of second-hand items is done online – and with a bit of knowledge, it’s something you can easily partake in.

There are loads of ways to exchange goods online, from eBay, Gumtree and Etsy to any number of online stores. However, in this article we’re going to focus on one in particular: Facebook Marketplace .

We’ve chosen this because a large majority of people already have a Facebook account and are familiar with its software. If you don’t already have a Facebook account and want to buy and sell secondhand items on Marketplace, you can sign up by following the instructions at this link

What is Marketplace and how can I access it?

Marketplace allows you to buy and sell items with people in your community on Facebook.

To access Marketplace on your phone, open the Facebook app, tap the three-horizontal-line symbol in the bottom right corner, and then click on Marketplace .

If you’re on your computer, go to your Facebook Home page, and click on Marketplace in the left-hand column. If you can’t see Marketplace straight away, you may need to click on the See More options drop-down menu.

Alternatively, you can always access Marketplace by typing facebook.com/marketplace into your address bar.

How do I buy something on Marketplace?

Once you’re in Marketplace, locate the “Search Marketplace” search bar and type the name of the item you wish to buy. A list of items will appear along with their prices and locations. Click on an item you might want to buy and a new page will open with more information about that particular item, including its condition, brand, and a more detailed description.

You can message the seller in two ways – click Message to send a custom message to the seller, or click Send to send

a pre-written message that says, “Is this still available?”

From there, you can continue your conversation – and bartering over price – in Facebook Messenger.

If you and the seller come to an agreement, you can arrange either a pickup or delivery. Remember, it’s best to only exchange cash once you’ve viewed the item in person; some sellers may wish for you to transfer money online, but this can be risky, particularly if you’re not confident with online transfers.

FEBRUARY - MARCH 2023 ACTIVE RETIREES | 36 | WWW.PROBUSSOUTHPACIFIC.ORG Technology How to make money with Facebook Marketplace /

How do I sell something on Marketplace?

When you sell something on Marketplace, you create a public listing that can be seen by anyone on Marketplace and in News Feed, search, and other places on or off Facebook.

To sell an item on Marketplace, click + Create New Listing on your computer, or click Sell on your phone app. Then click Item for Sale .

Next, click Add Photos to upload one or more photos of your item from your phone or computer.

Good photos are crucial, so take the time to photograph them clearly. Try to place them up against a plain background (such as a wall) if possible, to ensure there is as little distraction as possible. Make sure the lighting is good too; a poorly lit photo can hurt your chances of getting a good price.

Once you’ve uploaded some photos, enter the info about your item. Start with a strong title; this will be the first thing that potential buyers see, so make sure it’s concise and to the point.

Then, enter a price and choose a category. The price is a starting point, and buyers will undoubtedly want to barter with you, so it’s generally a good idea to list a higher price than you’re hoping to sell for.

Next, enter a description. If you’re selling a table, for example, you’ll want to list its dimensions, colour, condition, and any other information you think is relevant.

When you’re finished, click Publish ; or Next and then Publish if you’re on your phone. If Publish or Next is greyed out, it’s because you haven’t filled out one or more of the fields. Go back and fill these out and then try again.

Once you click Publish, you’ll have to wait a short time for your item to be approved by Facebook, and then it will go live on Marketplace. Sit back and wait for the offers to start rolling in!

A few extra tips

After your listing has been published, you can mark it as Sold, Pending or Available. If you’ve sold an item, marking it Sold will make it invisible to anyone else on Marketplace. All buyers who messaged you about the item will get a message saying the item has been sold.

Pending is what you’d use when you’ve made an agreement to sell the item and are waiting for the buyer to pick it up. New buyers will still be able to see the item, but they’ll know that the sale is pending.

If you’re not receiving any offers, there could be many reasons, including:

• The price is too high

• The Title doesn’t give an accurate enough description

• The photos are unclear

• Or, unfortunately, there may just simply be no demand for what you’re selling!

Like anything online and in real life, Facebook Marketplace may take some time to get used to, but overall it’s a very easy platform to master. And once you do, who knows what great items you may find – or what handy bits of extra cash you could make!

Where Will Probus Take You in 2023?

Anew year always brings a level of excitement about the opportunities ahead, whether you want to get out and about more, make new friends or learn new skills, it is the possibility of those new experiences that makes us smile.

Probus Clubs provide all those opportunities, and so much more…

There are so many benefits to being a Probus member: companionship of like-minded friends in your local community; monthly meetings where you get to hear from interesting guest speakers and enjoy morning tea or lunch; regular interest groups; fun outings and activities; and exciting travel with friends! Probus members also have access to exclusive discounts from our Probus Partners and the Members Benefit Scheme.

Probus members who are so inclined can join their Club Committees and contribute to their Club’s leadership. Members who have particular interests can coordinate groups within their Club to discuss, practice or investigate those interests. Members who would rather be surprised and have an eclectic mix of meetings and trips from which to have their pick, can do just that!

Club members across the country are busily preparing for the year ahead and in this cover story, we share some information about their Probus journeys.

Mary is the Secretary of the new Bilgola Plateau Probus Club (NSW). Having only started late in 2022, the Club is still in its infancy. Mary holds one of the 2 committee positions filled in the early days and has been involved in the start-up of the Club. At first, Mary was daunted by the task, having never been involved in anything like this, she wondered, “what have we gotten ourselves into?”

Soon, the details started coming together. Mary found an amazing coconspirator in Club President Patricia, of whom she speaks very highly. With different professional backgrounds, and a wealth of experience in different areas

– the two ladies create a fruitful collaboration. Mary says Patricia’s style of leadership is “so energetic! She has so many fun ideas.”

As the Club begins to find its footing and members get to know each other better, Mary adores being at her local shops and getting a “tap on the shoulder,” when someone from the Club has recognised her. One of the biggest benefits of the friends she is making in her Club is that she’s creating a Probus family within her local community. She notes that in her future, “it will become more important than ever to have a friendship group being local” to her home and loves building friendships with great people.

Mary and Patricia cannot wait to get into this year and fill their calendars with activities with their new friends - traveling, exploring, eating, and learning.

More established Clubs have already hit the ground running and have started their 2023 activities. Centenary Probus Club (QLD) have a Summer BBQ Breakfast in the park each January. Lane Cove Probus Club (NSW) have a day out in lieu of the January monthly meeting. This year, 17 members took advantage of the $2.50 daily cap on Gold Opal travel and caught a bus and ferry into Watsons Bay for a delicious seafood lunch.

Through the amazing community connections they’ve built, Cootamundra Combined Probus (NSW) had the Wombat Café opened especially for them. Member Carolyn says the Club enjoyed “beautiful delicacies such as fresh scones, vanilla slices, cheesecakes etc. Many also took home goodies for the freezer. We will be back again soon.”

Whether being outdoors is how you want to spend summer, or you’d rather shelter from the heat inside with a game of cards – your local Probus Club can provide. If there is a lake near your home, chances are there is a Probus Club that rows, rides, or walks around

it. Many Clubs have within them walking groups, book clubs, bike riding, chess and so much more. Mount Ommaney (QLD) member Jean credited her bridge group with helping to keep her connected when she hurt her back and could no longer drive. Charles Darwin Probus Club (NT) have a book club that meet every month while Marrara Probus Club (NT) have a weekly writer’s group. Melbourne Bearbrass Probus Club (VIC) have science clubs with interests in physics, astronomy, chemistry and even horticulture and fermentation (well … winemaking.) Freemantle Probus Club (WA) have regular barefoot

bowls days, whilst down the coast, the Bunbury Ladies Probus Club (WA) love a mystery bus tour. The Probus Club of Victor Harbor/Granite Island (SA) have multiple activities each week. So, if Latte Girls or walking group isn’t of interest, maybe a bonsai meeting or weekly e-bikers event is.

Any given month, fascinating guest speakers will be entertaining Clubs with informative and lively presentations. Whittlesea Combined Probus Club

(VIC) had the pleasure of hosting Rob Kerr, Secretary of the Victorian Apiarists Association, give a fascinating talk on beekeeping –complete with dress-up segment. Fraser Coast Hervey Bay Combined Probus Club (QLD) had a visit by two Police Constables who spoke about personal safety and were delightful, by all accounts. A clinical healthcare musician presented and played her harp for the Horsham Combined Probus Club (VIC). Professional storyteller and public speaker Arthur Thomas Ware has presented to 196 Probus Clubs over the past 26 years!

Cheryl from Patterson Lakes Probus Club (VIC) joined her local Probus after moving to a

new area. She said “joining Probus has given me social interaction, helping me settle into retirement. I love the bus trips best.”

Probus Clubs organise local visits, bus trips, interstate travel and overseas trips to suit their members and satiate their interests. Ismay from Ulverston Ladies Probus Club (Tas) -who has been with the Club for 17 years and been President 3 times- organised a trip to the Great Lake in Tasmania, “which included visiting the amazing Wall in the Wilderness,” she said. The Wall in the Wilderness was a

highlight for many members, who enjoyed exploring their gorgeous state.

If tropical holidays are more your speed, John from Probus Club of Narre Warren (VIC) organised a trip for some of their members to Norfolk Island in January.

Clubs have travelled all over our great country and all over the world, to wherever their members wanted to go, to do whatever activities interested them.

The power of a Probus Club is that it is YOUR Club. You decide how much involvement you have in the committee, how many activities you want to be involved with and what you want to do with your time. Plus, you get to do so with like-minded people. Probus Club members say how easy it is to find your kindred spirits in a group of people who are in the same position. People who know the difficulty in retiring from a career that meant so much to them or who had adult children move away, and who can help each other figure out what the next stage of their lives is going to be about.

Members will talk about their Probus travels and adventures, guest speakers and new hobbies, outings and meals, new things they’ve seen and learned and how much fun they have with their Probus Clubs. However, if you ask a Probian what they value most about their Probus Club, the answer will always be friendship.

Your warm and kind spirit can change lives through your Will Y

We all want to leave behind a legacy of positivity. Leaving a gift in your Will to Australian Red Cross can help transform lives for the better.

People like Val and Allie met through Red Cross and formed a beautiful friendship. In a world where people feel lonelier than ever before, it’s generous supporters that help us ensure people don’t feel alone. For Val, it’s people like Allie that help make her feel loved and cared for.

Everybody deserves the warmth of kindness and friendship, and your Will can help us share that with people for generations to come.

A lifetime of helping others S

parked by the love of his life, Bruce is leaving a gift behind in his Will. Will you?

[Bruce Smith and his late-wife, Mavis, have left gifts in their Wills for Australian Red Cross after volunteering more than 30 years together. Through an enduring legacy of love shared between Bruce and Mavis, Bruce hopes that their impact will be felt by people in the future long after they’re gone.]

“If you’ve been supporting a cause throughout your lifetime, then please don’t stop

when you’re thinking about what’s going to happen after you leave.”

Bruce will be leaving a gift in his Will to Red Cross – just as Mavis did – and he hopes he can inspire others to do so too.

“I always think about ‘people helping people’ as being a motto or a thought that l keep in mind, that you get more out of helping people than you can fully understand.”

This is the message that Bruce wants to pass on as

his legacy: “It would certainly be a wish of mine that people would consider helping others in such a way that they continue to support the causes they care about after they’ve gone”.

If you’ve already left a gift in your Will or are considering leaving one, please let us know so we can thank you and plan for the future.

Glenelg Bay Visits Hans Heysen

In November, forty-five Glenelg Bay Probus Club Members visited The Cedars, long time home of one of Australia’s most famous artists: Hans Heysen. It is named after the large cedar trees planted at the front of the house.

In three groups, with excellent guides, we went through the shop into what’s known as ‘Nora’s Studio,’ built around the late 1860s. Hans painted there from 1912-1913 until his new studio was built and Nora, the fourth of his eight children, and the only one to follow her father’s artistic footprint, then used it as her studio. Nora was the first woman to win the Archibald Prize in 1938.

The house was extensively renovated around 1919-20 to accommodate the growing family, but has always remained in the Heysen family until it was given to the Heysen Heritage Foundaiton in 2016. Han’s studio, constructed in 1913-4, is claimed to be the oldest purpose-built artist’s studio open to the public in Australia. The enormous south-facing window remains glazed with its original European etched glass. There are over two hundred paintings on display.

The garden was beautiful but, due to the showers, we couldn’t really appreciate it. We’ll have to go again. The lunch at the German Arms was attended by about 40 members.

Happy 40th Anniversary to Burnside Men’s Club Inc

The Probus Club of Burnside Inc. (Men’s) celebrate their anniversary every year by having a luncheon with their wives and friends. This year was a special 40th anniversary so a luncheon was held at the Mount Osmond Golf Club including a bus provided by the City of Burnside to transport members to and from the event. On the day it was raining and foggy in the hills, so the bus was greatly appreciated as our members did not have to negotiate the windy, steep road.

PSPL Representative Director for SA/NT, John Hall attended and presented our President, Dr John Crowhurst with a 40th Anniversary Certificate.

Peter Goers, from ABC Adelaide, was our guest speaker and he had everyone in fits of laughter with his 119th Probus talk.

The venue was perfect for this special event and a successful day was had by all those attending.

During the trip they entertained themselves with quizzes and laughter.

Club member Bev said “this was a fantastic day and the experience has become even more interesting since I went a few years ago… The zoo is building an hotel and developing an experience which is going to be the largest safari experience outside of Africa. It is expected to open early next year, about March. Personally, I am looking forward to it.”

On Wednesday 16 November 2022 our Club celebrated ten years since the first meeting with a trip to The Salmon Ponds and lunch.

Colourful Probus Day! Wagga Wagga Sunset Probus have a busy start to November

A very large cake, some colourful wigs and lots of good humour made Probus Day at Forest-Belrose Probus Club a memorable occasion!

Wagga Wagga Sunset Probus have a busy start to November. On the 1st of November, two other Members - Val and Ann - flew from Wagga to Sydney to attend the Melbourne Cup Lunch at NSW Parliament and had a great day along with members of other Probus Club including the Bathurst Macquarie Club. Lunch was a 5-course degustation and Val cemented her reputation as a lucky lady by winning a lucky door prize and sweep, with Ann also winning a place in the sweep - a good result for them both!

A full coachload of members and friends set off from Wagga at 8.00am on the 4th of November, for a great day visiting parts of the Snowy Valley Sculpture Trail, fortunately avoiding more rain after the recent overwhelming downpours and flooding in the region. Morning tea was at the Pioneer Women’s Hut at Tumbarumba, then a terrific lunch at Courabaya Winery with lovely views across the valley. The winery was hard hit in the bushfires of 2019/20 but the business is now back on its feet and welcoming visitors. A tour of six sculptures at Tumbarumba and others around Batlow, Tumut and Adelong kept everyone busy before returning to Wagga. More information on this great initiative, open all year and inspired by Sydney’s Sculptures by the Sea, can be found at https://sculpturebythesea.com/snowyvalleys/.

High Tea to celebrate Probus friendships

During the month of October, five Probus Clubs of Bathurst collaborated to celebrate Probus Day with a Friendship High Tea at the elegant venue, Keystone 1889 in Bathurst. The Mayor of Bathurst Regional Council, Cr Robert Taylor attended the event. He gave a short address, acknowledging the importance of community events such as this in bringing people together.

The venue was beautifully decorated with wreaths in Probus colours of ivy, Banksia roses, rosemary and yellow daisies from members’ gardens, and were supplemented by colourful Probus balloons.

Members from different Probus Clubs sat together to create new friendships, and in some cases, reconnect, and have fun. The place was filled with a hum of goodwill, laughter, and applause for speakers and performers.

Bathurst Ladies’ Probus Club performed a skit of Three Little Maids from the Mikado, ably directed by Petah. Paul spread his bush poetry over two segments, cleverly transforming Clancy of the Overflow into contemporary digital era verse and finishing off with poetry about his travels. The afternoon’s entertainment was concluded by classical opera arias performed by Monique Grima, Mitchell Conservatorium Concerto Award Winner 2022 - a young soprano with a promising career ahead of her.

Lucky door prize was won by Barbara and presented by the Mayor. Prizes for Best Probus Theme Dressed Lady and Gentleman went to Miriam and Michael. There were plenty of smiles at the end of the event. Probus Clubs of Bathurst committee members can be duly proud of the collaboration that was achieved to celebrate Probus Day 2022.

Waverton Probus Club

Celebrates Christmas at Le Coq and Fish

Despite covid and being a busy time of year, we still had 35 attendees very happy to celebrate Christmas. A good time was had by all.

Joint celebrations

Nepean Riverlands Probus Club held a celebration for Probus Day 2022. Heather, Malcolm and Peter – all foundation members from the Club’s inception in 2008 – were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for their efforts in helping the Club run successfully over the years. The committee helped make the day a huge success, including ordering the Blue and Gold cookies for the day – which were a big hit! The event even featured in the Western Weekend newspaper that week.

From its inception, the Nepean Riverlands Probus Club has been a popular club offering many activities, day trips and holidays. The walks are very popular and a new venture, having morning tea at a different venue each month is proving to be exceptionally well received. Many of the Foundation members are still very active in the Club and just recently returned from a wonderful trip to Griffith.

Silly season celebrations

Around 150 Members gathered to celebrate the Silly Season with a beautiful morning tea. Everyone enjoyed the main event: a performance by their Probus Choir.

High Tea to mark a special milestone

Gold Creek Probus Club was accredited on 10 November 1997 following an approach by Dick Sinclair (now deceased.) Dick Sinclair and his wife Pam were both members of Gungahlin Probus but saw a need for another Probus Club in the area. His recommendation was approved, and this led to the formation of Gold Creek Probus with Dick Sinclair as President, Pam Sinclair as Treasurer and Keran Niquet as Secretary. The Club’s first meeting was held in February 1998. Keran Niquet is currently the President of the Club.

On Saturday 29 October, 61 members attended a High Tea to celebrate the occasion at the Southern Cross Club Jamison, ACT. There was plenty to eat and endless cups of tea. It was a very special celebration enjoyed by all the members who were able to attend. Three members of the Ginninderra Rotary Club also attended, and Barry Howe from Rotary presented President Keran with the certificate of congratulations from Probus South Pacific.

Visit to the Wellington Dam

In November, some members and partners of the Men’s Probus Club of Booragoon enjoyed a Cascade bus trip to Wellington Dam and Collie.

Wellington Dam is in Wellington National Park, about 195km from Perth. It was constructed in 1933 and is the second largest surface water catchment in WA. Unfortunately, the water isn’t suitable for drinking and is mostly used for irrigation. It is managed by Harvey Water. The great attraction is a giant mural painted across the dam surface, which is claimed to be the biggest dam mural in the world.

As well as visiting this outstanding view, coach captain Chris took the group on a tour of Collie to see the murals around the town.

During the tour, an excellent lunch was enjoyed at the Brunswick Hotel.

Strong Camaraderie at Wembley Downs

In his latest President’s message, our president, Mike Fogarty said “I think it is fair to say the Wembley Downs Probus Club has faced considerable challenges since our first meeting in 2021. We confronted those challenges together with strong member support, and have now grown into a competent Probus Club with an emphasis on Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. We laugh a lot and have built a strong camaraderie.”

We have fostered friendship by having a series of excellent speakers and enjoying many and varied Club activities. Like the ones pictured.

We had a guided tour of Kings Park followed by lunch at the Botanica Café. The guide gave us a lot of interesting information about the plants and the history of the setting up of the various gardens.

Our Christmas celebration was great fun as we sported Christmas hats of our own creation. The fellowship was noisy and fun at the 300 Acres Restaurant at the Wembley Golf course.

Croquet morning and new friendships

The predicted rain and storms held off for the Ladies of the Broadbeach Probus Club. Their planned outing for the month to learn to play a game of Croquet at their local Broadbeach Croquet Club went ahead without a hitch.

The ladies learnt that the object of the game is to hit the balls through the course of six hoops in the right sequence in each direction and finish by hitting them against the centre peg. The team which completes the course first with both balls wins. The game was first played in 1856 and has become very popular in current times.

Members of their Club were on hand to show the ladies how the game was played. The Probus Ladies put everything into it and look like pros by the end of the morning. The Croquet Club put on a delicious morning tea during which new friendships were made. Lunch afterwards was at the adjacent Bowls Club.

Toowoomba Range Probus Club Celebrates 35th Birthday

VP Tony Mullen presented the certificate commemorating the 35th anniversary of the start of Toowoomba Range Probus; and the longest-serving member Ernie Potts (inducted 26/6/1990) cut the magnificent (and very tasty!) anniversary cake. Also at the meeting, Quoits champ Gail receives her trophy from Tony.

Victoria Point gets its own Probus Club

They received a few more than they bargained for when 75 attendees turned up at a meeting to discuss a new Probus Club at Victoria Point. 42 members joined on the day, with a further 18 indicating they will join down the track. We look forward to seeing the Victoria Point Club grow even further.

Visit to the Australian Outback Spectacular

Twenty-six members of the Indooroopilly West and Mt Ommaney Probus Clubs enjoyed a great day out at the Australian Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast. We travelled together in a coach.

We were all given an Australian Outback Spectacular straw hat on arrival.

The two-hour show depicts a journey to the heartland of Australia, featuring Australian performers, most of whom have worked on properties, portraying realistic, relatable Australian characters.

The impressive technology portrays life in the Australian bush and the hardships, joy and sometimes financial difficulties that people from the bush experience in the land of sweeping plains, of droughts and flooding rains, so graphically portrayed by one of Australia’s finest poets, Dorothea MacKellar in 1904 in her epic poem, ‘I Love a Sunburnt Country.’

Live horses and cattle enter the arena with the actors portraying typical scenes from the Australian bush and displaying good horsemanship. The set is such that every one of the 1,000 strong audience has a good view of the show.

During the show a good three course meal is served with drinks, tea and coffee. The efficient staff are dressed to complement the theme. The show concludes with the emotion of rain ending the hard times and the optimistic looking forward to better days.

This is a must visit for anyone visiting the Gold Coast.

Lots of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship

Everyone from Alexandra Headland Mixed Probus Club enjoyed lots of fun, friendship and fellowship at the Christmas Party held at Twin Waters Golf Club. All members love all the gatherings, organised by Kae, our Activities Coordinator.

Hope Island Probus’ Day on the Hopo

Hope Island Probus Club had a fantastic day on the Hopo, the ferry that travels up and down the Gold Coast’s Broadwater.

Guests were able to disembark at Marina Mirage for an ice cream or a coffee and then catch the next ferry to the Gold Coast’s HOTA (Home of the Arts) where bocce, croquet, a photography competition and lunch were waiting for them.

The day was made even more enjoyable thanks to funding from the Gold Coast City Council for its Seniors’ Week via the Council of the Aging.

The ANSTO Synchrotron proved popular with Probus Clubs

The ANSTO synchrotron, in the Monash University campus in Clayton, has drawn in 2 different Probus Clubs in November. The Wantirna Heights Combined and Melbourne Bearbrass Probus Clubs visited the facility (separately) and received a fascinating science lesson!

Both Clubs received a 90-minute tour around the facility by brilliant science students, obtaining their PhDs. They were taught that the 150-metre circular machine can produce radiation of many wavelengths (from low energy Infra-red to high energy X-rays) that can then be filtered in order to isolate the desired wavelength for the chosen application.

The range and depth of applications, and the current and potential benefits for medicine, forensic science, industry and the extension of our understanding of our world, are nothing short of astounding.

Using the synchrotron, Chicago researchers were able to prove Phar Lap was poisoned with arsenic in the US in 1932. The proof was from two small hairs from Phar Lap’s neck in the Melbourne Museum, which showed that 2 days before his death he had lethal amounts of arsenic in his system.

The synchrotron has also been used to: study the interior of lungs of premature rat pups, leading to a revolutionary treatment for premature human babies; ‘magnify’ and map the molecular structure of the Covid-19 virus; and scan for and irradicate cancers that have not responded to conventional treatment.

Sweets to the Sweet - Anniversary Lunch

The Dimboola Probus Anniversary luncheon this year was enlivened by the sweet sounds of Horsham Probus Club’s Silver Strings, the renowned ukulele troupe.

Lois decorated the Bowling Club room and Bev managed the food preparation in the kitchen: endless party pies and sausage rolls, mounds of delicious sandwiches and, most importantly, a large array of cream cakes and sweets to tempt any dessert connoisseur.

Club President Bev gave a speech to welcome invited guests from the Nhill, Kaniva and Horsham Clubs. The Bowling club was a sea of yellow and blue as all members were encouraged to don Probus colours in honour of the day. Games were played, including flag nationality identification, new friends were made, and packets of lollies were distributed to each table.

Guests and Members alike raved about the food!

Aviation Group outing to iFLY

Probus Club of Cowes has had an increasing number of activities this year with life on Phillip Island (almost) getting back to normal. Norrie, a foundation member of the club, has re-started the Aviation Group with a trip to Moorabbin Air Museum planned for the 23rd on November.

On the 4th of November three members, went to iFLY where they each had two sessions at flying in a simulated/controlled environment.

This was certainly a different experience and each progressed to flying up about 6 metres (with the instructor) and zooming around the wind tunnel at alarming speed.

We all look forward to whatever Norrie has in mind for the Aviation Group next year.

Trip to Broughton Hall, Jindivik

The Combined Probus Club of Berwick Central enjoyed a wonderful day to Broughton Hall in Jindivik, 50 kilometres from Melbourne. The members wandered around the beautiful gardens with a backdrop of the Tarago Reservoir, after a very informative tour by the owner, morning tea and a visit to their nursery we headed to the Jindivik Cafe for a delicious 2 course lunch.

Self-drive touring to Gariwerd – The Grampians

East Malvern Combined Probus Club embarked on a 4-day self-drive tour to see some of Victoria with friends. This trip meant each car/driver was responsible for their own journey but provided friendship throughout the holiday. The group joined for pre-dinner Happy Hour and then a meal each evening and – despite the overcast and drizzling weather – saw the sights. Members went on a choose-their-own-adventure including walking the trails around Lake Fyans and Lake Bellfield, visiting the Old Jail or Chinese Museum at Ararat, walking through the Stick Shed in Murtoa and much more.

Lyrical Finale at Whittlesea Probus

After technical difficulties - echoing the false starts of the last few years of Covid interruptions – Whittlesea Probus Club were gifted a gorgeous and interactive Christmas Carol Concert. Glenys played and sang, with Ivan singing and conducting (ensuring audience participation.) Both had battled Covid earlier in the year, but you wouldn’t know it from their performances – true professionals!

Soothing Music for Horsham Members

Horsham Combined Probus Club had a speaker with a difference at its latest meeting: harpist Rachel Gellert played and outlined her role as a clinical healthcare musician.

The harp, she told the Western Victorian club, has been proven to lower the heart rate of listeners and provide enormous benefit to the sick, terminally ill and to babies.

Mrs Gellert said that monitoring of babies’ heart rates by medical staff revealed they were influenced by the gentle music. She also entertained Horsham Combined Probus Club members with a musical demonstration.

Member Profile: The Spreyton Squad

In the mid-late 1940s, four girls - Anne, Kaye, Margaret and Pat – started school at Spreyton Primary. The school was built in 1885 and was a single room schoolhouse with one teacher, in a semi-rural suburb a few kilometres south of Devonport, on the north-west coast of Tasmania.

Their teacher was Mrs. Hoobin who supervised the 80 students armed with a wooden ruler – to tap on the knuckles of children who played up or lost focus. She taught there for 15 years. Principals Dineen, Fleming and Chappell oversaw the running of the school until the early 50s.

In 1947, when other local schools - Melrose and Aberdeen – were closed, a secondary building and an additional teacher (Mrs Brown – who stayed for 21 years) were added to Spreyton to accommodate the increasing student body. The original old building was used as a kindergarten/assembly hall and the sentimental people amongst us were not happy to see it demolished many years later.

When Mr Chappell joined the school, he made

an impact. He hated the word “got”. We were taught that it shouldn’t be in the English language, and we were encouraged to write it on a piece of paper, bury it and find an alternative! His first task with all pupils was to build a map of Tasmania in the playground complete with rivers and mountains. This was the best geography lesson we ever had!!

He later became Chair of Education at the University of Tasmania.

His son Duncan was a pupil in grade VI. All the girls “fell in love” with Duncan but he thought they were all “daft.” This was our first experience of someone from another country joining the

school and his accent and choice of vocabulary fascinated us. He was dux of the class in that year.

We were all excited to find out many years later that Duncan had moved to the “mainland” and went on to become a Professor of Criminology!

The most stressful days came from visits from the School Inspector, School Dentist or School Nurse. There was no school library at that time and it was many years before a visit from the newly established mobile library service became a highlight for bookworms.

The old school building was used

for many memorable school concerts and the school choir practiced in the building. The choir competed at the Devonport Eisteddfod occasionally and came home with an “honourable mention” a few times, but no trophies! The old building was also used to deliver the “Oslo Lunch” and free milk (which was often left out in the elements and was warm when consumed.)

During winter a kind lady and her husband, who lived opposite the school, provided hot Ovaltine made from the free milk for the students. We lined up on the veranda of their home with our mugs and the drink was dispensed during morning break.

Local orchardists donated apples to the students periodically and toffee apples were made by the hundreds for sale in the “Pedlars Parade” at the School Fair! The annual School Fair (which would later become the Apple Festival) was a muchanticipated event for the residents of the area as well as a substantial fundraiser for the school. The crowning of an Apple Queen (chosen for her fundraising ability!) was a highlight of the festivities.

Most students lived within 3 kms of the school and walked to school. Buses and trains transported us to the annual picnic held at “The Bluff” in Devonport. For many students this was the only chance they had

to visit the seaside. Egg & spoon races and three-legged races formed part of the activities.

In the latter part of WWII, a system of air raid shelters were constructed in the gullies on the land surrounding the school….… fortunately they were never put to the test! After the War, these gullies were filled in to create a school oval and then Principal, Mr. Fleming, was keen to organise a boy’s football side.

The boys had always been given toy footballs or occasionally used ones from the Spreyton Football Club. They were delighted when a local identity donated a brand-new football, which was entrusted to a six-yearold Darrel Baldock and the rest is history. Darrel went on to become Captain of the St. Kilda Football Club and, later, a member of parliament. We danced around a Maypole for Empire Day (24th May) and an occasional “Nature Walk” in the bush at the rear of the school was a favourite when wild orchids, and nuts and berries (for counters!!) were gathered. Bent sticks and pinecones were used as hockey sticks and balls!

After leaving primary school the girls separated and went their own way to attend various secondary schools in the locality. One was later crowned an Apple Queen and in 1966 also had the honour of being awarded the title of Miss Tasmania Charity in the Miss Tasmania Quest, which was an annual event to raise awareness of, and funds for, the

disabled. The district was recognised as being very generous!

Each of the group of four participated in a business course at secondary school and trained in secretarial duties. All remember the challenges of Pittman’s Shorthand!

However, from there on we saw professional and business activities develop. Two trained as nurses, one of whom married a hotelier and spent 24 years in that business before completing a refresher course and returning to the nursing field. One moved to Darwin for a sea-change for 4 years but later returned to nursing and more training and completed 30 years in midwifery before heading into aged-care nursing. The other two developed businesses with their respective husbands (horticulture and engineering/marketing.)

Between 1997 and 2008, each of the ladies joined Mersey Valley Probus Club and rediscovered their shared past. After 5 decades and travels around the country and back, Probus reunited these ladies in Fun and Friendship!

“The compilation of this story has created much laughter and fun as we’ve reminisced about the “good old days” and learnt more about each other!” -Anne, Kaye, Margaret and Pat.
