As we all appreciate, our Club meetings create opportunities to connect and extend our circle of friends, people whose company we enjoy. We all have the ability to create a sense of belonging by being present and showing care for one another. It starts with a friendly wave or smile but can grow into a warm friendship.
Extending a hand of friendship and welcoming more people to our Probus Community is aided by the formation of new Clubs. May I take this opportunity to welcome our new members and congratulate those involved in the formation of 11 new Clubs during the past 12 months.
In New South Wales, there are Bilgola Plateau Probus, Camden Combined Probus, Gilead Probus and The Oaks Probus Clubs. In Queensland, Arana Hills District Probus and Victoria Point Probus Clubs. The Adelaide CBD Probus Club in South Australia, two new Victorian Clubs in Wandin Probus Club and Alfredton Lucas Probus. In Tasmania, there is Devonport City Probus, and across the Tasman, the Parnell Probus Club.
Close to a thousand of these new Clubs’ members are enjoying monthly meetings, morning and afternoon teas, interest groups, guest speakers, trips, group activities, new friendships and so much more.
May I also congratulate and thank members who have stepped forward to take on roles within the Management Committees of these new Probus Clubs, providing a vital service to their communities by helping fellow retirees stay engaged and connected. As Club Leaders, I ask you to take some time to consider the future, and how many members your Club will enable to stay engaged and connected in the coming years. That thought alone is very rewarding.
I know that there are many of you that are continuing to serve on Management Committees beyond the amount of time you originally expected because you believe in Probus and what it brings to your fellow members. Thank you again for your continued efforts. To all those new Committee members, I trust you are all brimming with enthusiasm and new ideas that will strengthen your Club into the future.
It is my pleasure to share that Probus South Pacific is collaborating with Black Dog Ride to help even more retirees Discover Probus. The benefits of social connections, particularly in older Australians, are well documented.
Studies have shown that those who stay socially engaged and active have much better mental and physical health which is why this collaboration makes so much sense.
Black Dog Ride want to help as many retired men and women as possible build strong social links and avoid social isolation. What better way to do that, than with Probus?
Over the coming months, you will see increased marketing activity centred around the importance of social connections. This activity will include a promotional campaign across radio, print and digital publications across the country.
This joint national campaign will also include communication with government and will enhance and support your Club’s efforts in promoting Probus locally with the range of complimentary personalised material available to all Clubs from PSPL.
Hopefully, you share my view that will see this collaboration as a rewarding and positive step. I truly believe that so many retirees would join Probus today if they understood the positive effect being a Probus member could have on their lives.
So, this year, let us all work together and encourage our club members to invite retired and semi-retired people they know or meet to Discover Probus!

The Sunshine Cure
With osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment all linked to vitamin D deficiency, it’s wise to monitor your vitamin D levels during winter.
An instant mood-lifter, natural antibacterial agent and source of renewable energy, sunshine is a miracle product supplied to the world at no cost. It’s also the quickest, easiest and cheapest way for humans to boost their vitamin D levels.
Despite Australia’s reputation for being a sunburnt country, it’s been estimated that between 30-50 per cent of Australians are vitamin D deficient, with older people more likely to be impacted.
An important factor in the maintenance of good bone health, vitamin D helps the body absorb the calcium and phosphorous needed to build strong bones. It also supports healthy immune and nervous systems, and is also thought to play a role in regulating insulin levels. With the ramifications of chronic vitamin D deficiency considered to be very serious, vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for maintaining good health. But how do you know if you’re getting enough of it?
Solar power
When sunlight hits the skin, an important chain reaction is started within the body. The sun’s rays enable the body to create vitamin D (with the help of the liver and kidneys) which is then used by the body to promote absorption of calcium and phosphorous.
With calcium and phosphorous essential to the prevention of conditions such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia (bone softening), it’s incredibly important for older Australians to monitor their vitamin D levels.
Osteoporosis Australia advises that a vitamin D level of at least 50 nmol/L at the end of winter (and
up to 70 nmol/L in summer) is what we should be aiming for. Yet with winter’s grey skies and cool temperatures obscuring the sun’s rays and driving people indoors, it can be more difficult to get the recommended amount of vitamin D into your system.
People living in the Northern Territory and Queensland (they don’t call it the ‘Sunshine State’ for nothing) can keep their vitamin D levels replenished by exposing themselves to the sun for just a few minutes a day, all year round. Southern state dwellers typically require more prolonged exposure during winter, with a few hours a week recommended during the colder, darker months.

Health The Sunshine Cure /
Seasonal supplementation
Short of packing up your life and moving to sunnier climates, there are other ways that you can boost your vitamin D levels during winter.
Some foods (such as egg yolks, salmon and liver) contain vitamin D, yet exposure to sunlight is the optimal way for most people to replenish their levels of this essential vitamin.
Many of us can make a conscious effort to roll up our sleeves and expose ourselves to a bit of sunshine each day but what about people who struggle to access enough sunshine to convert into vitamin D?
Older people who are housebound or living in aged care homes, people who take medication that interferes with vitamin D absorption, people with darker skin and people who cover their bodies for cultural, religious or medical reasons have a higher risk of developing a vitamin D deficiency.
These people are most likely to benefit from vitamin D supplementation with tablets or liquids easily accessed at pharmacies and supermarkets without a prescription. Yet, despite supplements being readily available over-thecounter, it’s unwise to take supplements without first having your vitamin D levels and general health assessed by a doctor.
If you’re concerned about your levels of vitamin D, your first port of call should be your GP. From there you can work together to devise a plan to ensure you stay on top of your vitamin D and maintain strong, healthy bones and teeth for life.

Get on top of pain
There’s no doubt about it – sometimes getting old hurts. But with the US in an opioid epidemic, we have to be sensible about how we handle chronic pain. We give you some options and tips.
When it comes to treating pain, the first thing to do is to work out what sort of pain we are talking about. Generally, you can split it into two categories: acute (shortterm, usually from injury) and chronic (ongoing or constant pain). The causes of these pains are often injury or surgery, but sometimes, in the case of chronic pain, it can be a niggling issue that just doesn’t go away.
So, what steps can we take to feel better, without being too reliant on popping pills?
Taking pills
Firstly, there is nothing wrong with taking painkillers for pain. We are fortunate to live in an age when we can relieve at least some of the symptoms of our discomfort.
However, it is important to follow doctors’ orders when it comes to painkillers and to follow the instructions on the packet if you’re taking painkillers at home. We’ve heard “if pain persists, see your doctor” so many times on TV that it ceases to mean anything, but it’s the first step if you have ongoing pain: see your GP.
A GP will make sure you take the right pain medication and get you stronger medication than over-the-counter products, if needed. Drugs like opioids -
that we hear so much about - change the chemicals in our brain to alleviate the messages of pain our body is sending; this makes them far more addictive than your average pain pills, and they must be handled with care. You need to watch out for the side effects associated with pain medication, such as drowsiness, confusion and even liver damage (if taken incorrectly or too much).
Finding the cause
Tackling the pain at its source is a good remedy. If it’s your back, you might need to see an osteopath or chiropractor; if you have tooth pain, see the dentist.
It might sound obvious, but too many of us treat the symptoms and often put off looking into what is really causing the pain. That is the blessing and the curse of having effective pain medication at our fingertips.

Training the brain
Sometimes we can’t stop the pain, so we have to find other ways of dealing with it. One way is to concentrate on your daily routine and try not to focus too heavily on the pain. You can also talk to a psychologist or occupational therapist about solid strategies for coping with the pain. Your mind is a very strong tool in not just stopping, but also coping, with pain.
Alternative options
If you’ve tried all the obvious avenues of pain relief, you might want to consider alternative or complementary options.
These don’t need to be too far out there, but consider, for example, using yoga to assist a sore back, or try acupuncture for joint pain. Or, if you’re able, just having a walk in the sunshine. Vitamin D, fresh air and the endorphins from some light exercise can all help lower pain levels.
In Australia, there are conditions that may qualify you to be prescribed for medical cannabis. The system is still in its infancy and there are herbal therapies to give you a break from traditional medicines.
Do your research and talk to your GP. We’re not suggesting you can cure cancer with meditation here; but that there may be other options that could work for you.

Aortic Stenosis: The importance of early detection in Seniors
Do you know what Aortic Stenosis is?
It’s a common heart valve disease, 1 in 8 people over the age of 75 have Aortic Stenosis1, yet it is often missed or underdiagnosed.
First, let’s talk about the heart, the heart is an amazing organ that pumps blood throughout the body but it’s also very complex. It is made up of four chambers: the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. It’s also connected to four valves, but we will focus on the aortic valve. The aortic valve is located between the left ventricle and the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body2. When the heart beats, the aortic valve opens to allow blood to flow from the left ventricle into the aorta, where it is then distributed to the rest of the body3
Aortic stenosis occurs when the aortic valve becomes narrowed or blocked by a
buildup of calcium deposits, preventing the heart from pumping blood efficiently to the rest of the body4.
This heart valve disease is often underdiagnosed because its symptoms can be mistaken for the natural effects of aging or other medical conditions5. Some people with aortic stenosis may dismiss their symptoms as minor or not get medical attention, while there are some people who may not experience any symptoms until the condition has progressed to a more severe stage. Common symptoms include: Shortness of breath, chest pain or tightness, fainting or lightheadedness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and swollen ankles or feet3
Aortic stenosis is a serious condition that if overlooked can lead to complications such as heart failure and sudden cardiac death6. However, it is also
a treatable condition, and with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many people with aortic stenosis can have a good quality of life. There are effective treatments available, including surgery and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), which can improve symptoms. The key is to get on top of your medical needs, even if you don’t experience symptoms it’s recommended to get a yearly heart auscultation after the age of 65. If you or a loved one experiences any symptoms of aortic stenosis, it’s important to see your GP and get them to listen to your heart.

Ways to beat the heating bill blues
Often our power bills are higher in winter because we are running heaters and dryers; taking longer showers; and leaving our lights switched on for longer because of shorter daylight hours.
Making a few small changes in the way we live can help prevent winter power bill shock.
Here are 10 ways to beat the heating bill blues.
1 Rug up
Before you turn to the heater or electric blanket, try adding an extra layer of clothing, woolly socks, or popping an extra blanket on your bed. Ditching the electric blanket or only using it to warm the bed before you go to sleep will help reduce power bills. A hot water bottle and flannelette sheets can be cosy –and less costly – alternatives.
2 Close curtains and blinds
Keep the heat in by opening curtains and blinds during the day and allowing the sun to warm a room and closing them again in the afternoon to stop cold air from creeping in.
3 Add floor coverings
If you’ve got hard floors, adding a rug in winter can help the room feel warmer.
4 Become a draught detective
Locate windows or doors where draughts may be causing heat to steal away. Using a door snake and sealing windows with weather seal tape can be low-cost ways to ensure the heat stays inside.
Worried about winter power bills? About 38 per cent of a household’s energy use is for heating.
5 Choose your heater wisely
Portable heaters can be cheap to buy but more expensive to run. Think long-term energy efficiency when you replace or upgrade heaters. Gas heaters are more efficient than electric heaters.

10
6 Switch off
No longer in a room? Then give lights the flick. Likewise, if you’re not using a room, shut the door so you only heat the room you’re in. If your heater has a timer, set it so that it’s not running all night while you’re sleeping.
7
Turn the temperature down
Even reducing the temperature by one degree Celsius can reduce your heating energy bill by 10 per cent. Ideally, heating should be set between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. Check your hot water system too. The thermostat should be set at 60 degrees Celsius for storage hot water systems and no more than 50 degrees Celsius on instantaneous systems.
8 Keep showers short
Hot water use can be a third of your energy costs so using an egg timer when you’re taking a shower can help keep a lid on cost. Likewise, only wash clothes in cold water.
9 Dry naturally
If you make a practise of popping clothes in the dryer, try hanging them on a clothesline on sunny days or using a drying rack inside on damp days.
10
Do an audit on appliances
Have you got into the habit of leaving appliances plugged in and switched on all the time? Mobile phone left charging when it’s already at full charge? Switching appliances off at the wall when they are not in use can make a difference to your power bills.

How to recover lost cash
Ever made an electronic transfer only to discover later that you’ve sent your money in the wrong direction?
Mistaken transactions happen more often than you may think, particularly when we’re rushing through our internet or mobile banking tasks. Someone types in a BSB or account number incorrectly; the wrong number is provided by the recipient; or the wrong payee is selected from our list of payees in our internet or mobile banking.
Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) data found about 83 per cent of mistaken transactions during a three-month period in 2015 were the product of incorrectly entering account details. In 2021, their review of the ePayments Code included a section about “mistaken internet payment.” So, clearly, it is a widespread issue.
Fortunately, the voluntary ePayments Code provides some protections for people who have tripped up when making a transaction. Most financial institutions and
some payment services agree to adhere to the Code. It sets down a process that financial institutions agree to follow if a customer needs to retrieve money they’ve paid to the wrong person or organisation.
First, you have to be aware of it. Sometimes you only realise you’ve made a mistaken transaction when the person or organisation that was meant to receive the money raises the alarm.
It’s a good reason to check your bank and credit card statements on a monthly basis. It also pays to clean up your payee list regularly. One Sydneysider was caught out when he mistakenly transferred his monthly rent to a real estate agency connected to a previous tenancy. The first he knew of the mistake was when the correct real estate agency contacted him to tell him his rent was 10 days overdue.

Watch your accounts
If you spy an incorrect payment, contact your financial institution immediately.
As long as the money is still in the recipient’s bank account, you may get it back if you contact your institution within 10 business days.
ASIC advises consumers to get a reference number when they report a mistaken transaction to their financial institution.
After 10 business days you could still be able to get your money back, but it may take longer. Again, it relies on the money still being in the recipient’s account.
If it is more than seven months since the mistaken transfer has occurred, the recipient has to consent to the return of your money before it can be sent back.
Aware that the payments environment is changing rapidly, ASIC has continued to review the ePayments Code.
Along with considering the effectiveness of the process for handling mistaken transactions, the regulator asked for feedback on whether the Code’s protections should be extended to small business customers.
ASIC has reported that the number of mistaken transactions has fallen as more people use PayID. This is where people send payments using a recipient’s email address or mobile phone number rather than using a BSB and account number.
By staying vigilant and following the advice above, you’ll be able to lower your chances of having cash transfers go awry.

Probus and Black Dog Ride Together
The recent announcement of a collaboration between Probus and Black Dog Ride has been received with excitement.
In a great show of support, Black Dog Ride appreciate that Probus Club members are social, active, and engaged. These benefits keep retirees both mentally and physically healthier. In recognising this, Black Dog Ride are working with Probus to bring even more retirees into local Probus Clubs, so that they too can be socially engaged and active retirees.
The commitment from Black Dog Ride is an endorsement of the amazing benefits of joining a Probus Club knowing that this dramatically reduces the risks of social isolation.
During the pandemic, the world was learning how to stay connected; proudly, many Probus Clubs found inventive and innovative ways to stay in touch and keep active with their Probus friends As lockdowns eased and we became free to gather again, Probus Clubs rejoiced!
The last year has
seen Clubs introduce a surge of new activities and interest groups, happy to once again be able to enjoy these activities. Clubs have embraced new sports like bowling, bowls, bocce and croquet, with so many Clubs now enjoying monthly sporting competitions – all in the name of good fun, of course.
Most Clubs participate in weekly walking groups, with more ambitious groups like mountain biking, hiking, e-biking, kayaking and swimming starting to pop up in some Clubs. There are more
coffee and book groups getting back into local cafes, and Clubs venturing out to try new and different restaurants in their communities.
Travel has well and truly opened back up, and it seems like domestic travel is popular, with so many Clubs opting to explore our beautiful, sunburnt country and surrounding islands and some also venturing overseas.
Probus members have reported that, even with all these amazing activities filling up their calendars, the best thing about being part of a Probus Club is the amazing, lifelong friendships they have made. Being able to participate

in these varied endeavours with like-minded Probus friends, it seems only natural that belonging to a Probus Club would leave you not only busier, but also happier and healthier!
This is what Black Dog Ride and Probus want for more retirees across the country: to stay engaged in their communities and take adventures with their likeminded Probus friends. Black Dog Ride have always placed emphasis on engagement. In fact, travelling around the country and creating involvement within communities in every state is one of the pillars of their first ride.
With Black Dog Ride collaborating with Probus to introduce more retirees to an active, happier retirement, we thought it was only fair to introduce Black Dog Ride to our Active Retirees.

About Black Dog Ride
In 2008, Black Dog Ride Founder, Steve Andrews, witnessed two close friends’ families rocked by depression. In both cases, he felt shocked as he had no idea it was happening. These friends were suffering in silence.
In 2009 Steve embarked on the inaugural Black Dog Ride: a loud and proud rebellion to bring light to a war waged in silence. He rode 15,000 km from Busselton, WA around Australia for mental health awareness. Although the primary function of the Ride was – and still is – to start a conversation, people
were very willing to donate funds to the cause. Soon after, Black Dog Ride was formed. Funds raised now go towards resources and programs to help people with depression, the primary goal remains to raise awareness of a disease that spreads silently.
On the 3rd Sunday of March each year, rides take place in each state of the country to involve communities, start conversations and bring awareness to depression and suicide prevention. These one-day rides are the primary activity of the organisation: The One-Dayers.

Seasoned riders Sandra and David Helkin, with PSPL Chairman

These rides support the mission of Black Dog Ride by:
• Engaging and collaborating with local communities Australia-wide
• Raising awareness of depression and suicide prevention in communities involved with the rides
• Building important social links for riders, community members, and community groups
• Linking riders and community groups to mental health support services
• Building the capacity of Black Dog Ride volunteers around Australia
• Supporting local business and community groups
• Raising vital funds for mental health services.
Why the “black dog”?
The symbol of the black dog is one synonymous with depression. Winston Churchill coined the term “black dog” to describe his struggle with mental health issues: like a faithful companion, sometimes out of sight, but never far away.
When Steve Andrews completed his first ride around Australia, he took with him a black dog named Winston.
Winston is still the organisation mascot and has been used to break the ice and start conversations about mental health for over a decade now.
When looking for a clear way to represent what the organisation is about, it had to be the black dog Winston on a motorcycle.
What brought Black Dog Ride and Probus together?
Since the Covid-19 pandemic first surfaced in 2020, “social isolation” – although playing a role in fighting Covid – has had a negative impact on the mental health of our nation. Retirees were particularly affected. Older Australians were more susceptible to the virus PLUS they had the added disadvantage of their social lives being classified as nonessential.
While working Australians had contact with colleagues and employers (in offices or working remotely,) and people at low-risk were encouraged to step out in order to do grocery shopping and buy necessities, older Australians were told to isolate themselves as much as possible. This isolation manifested in ways that affected the

mental health of many people.
In 2023, the ripples of this are still being felt. The older demographic who are not socially engaged are still at increased risk of loneliness and depression.
But do you know what portions of the retired population have markedly lower risk of loneliness and poor mental health? Retirees who have remained socially active, engaged, and have continued to contribute to their communities. All things Probus members are!
Black Dog Ride have recognised how socially connected Probus members are, and the positive results on the mental health this has, and they have pledged to help PSPL attract more new members into the Fun and Friendship of Probus!
With their help, Probus has expanded its marketing ventures to introduce even more retirees to a life enriched by new friends, enlivened by interesting meetings and fascinating guest speakers and invigorated by exciting trips and outings.

It all began with an ‘Interest Meeting’ in 1993. Membership was fixed at 60, a number quickly reached and a waiting list holding fast for some years.
Throughout the 30 years, the Club met continuously (except during the COVID-19 years) in the warm, welcoming ambience of the Robertson Room at Canberra’s historic St John’s Church, always in the spirit of Fun and Friendship.

Palmerston Probus Club travelled into Darwin for a day of culture and fine cuisine.
First stop was the Darwin Museum and Art Gallery, and as luck would have it, the visitors were able to view the 2022 Exit Art Exhibition. This exhibition showcased the remarkable work of Year 12 art students from the NT. Works cover contemporary and traditional mediums and, to viewer’s delight, included amazing examples of digital paintings, photography and 3D sculptures. The Probians reported that “the talent on display by these students was just superb” and they wanted to extend a “hearty congratulations to all involved.”
Lunch was at The Saltwater Café @ Bundilla located inside the Museum. The Club members had a table situated on the verandah, presenting sea views and even the odd balmy breeze. Delicious food and great company made for a very enjoyable day.

Eastlakes Probus Club was founded in February 1988, meeting on the east side of Lake Macquarie at Charlestown, NSW. A year later they had 18 members including their first female member. Over the 35-year period the Club has registered a total of 213 members, with peak membership at 92.
The 35-year Anniversary lunch featured many memories and photos being shared of great times, including the Club’s Norfolk Island holiday.
The cake was cut by the 3 longest-serving Club members in attendance (members for almost 30 years.) One member not able to attend on the day has been in the Club for 33 years.
The Club now looks forward to many more years of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship.
A Week in Norfolk Island
17 members of the Thirroul Probus Club went for a week-long Trade Travel trip on Norfolk Island. Their Tour Guide, David Buffett (far left of the photo) is a descendant of the 8 mutineers who moved here from the Pitcairn Islands in 1856. The location pictured is the Captain Cook Memorial Lookout on the northern tip of the NI National Park. This shot was taken after a relaxed early morning ramble through the rainforest and just before a barbecue breakfast was served.

Life Membership Awarded to Walter and Philippa
A Club’s success can often be attributed to the hard work of the Management Committee, says Warren, the President of Middle Harbour Probus Club. “When I scan the roll of past and present members, it’s gratifying to see how many of us have pitched in to help in so many ways over the years,” he commented.
The Club have honoured two such members - Walter and Phillipa - with Life Membership of the Club. Warren says that Walter’s secretarial skills and Phillipa’s supervision of all membership matters have contributed to the strength of the Club, and this Life Membership is a token of thanks.

100 Year-Young Inductee
Ulverstone Ladies Probus Club enjoyed an exciting April meeting: Phyllis, who celebrated her 100th birthday in February, was inducted into their Club, maybe the oldest person in Australian Probus history to do so…?
Phyllis’s daughter Judy recently joined and was sure her mum would enjoy the fun and friendship the Club offers. Phyllis has already participated in the monthly card playing afternoons, and 2 luncheon outings. She lives independently and drives her car around town. She says her many craft and family interests and her determination to enjoy each day as it comes, has enabled her to live a full, healthy life.
Moondah Ladies show how it’s done, with travel, friendship and fun!
Staying social and active is all in a day’s fun for Moonah Ladies Probus Club! The Club has regular trips and dineouts, but it seems like no matter the venue (like the spectacular vista of their trip to the Tasman Peninsula,) the fun, friendship and laughs seem to be the main attraction!

Let’s get Quizzical!
The Probus Club of South Bunbury held their annual quiz earlier this year, during their monthly meeting. They have supplied a picture - capturing their members all stumped mid-quiz to prove how tricky it was and one that proves the old phrase, “Winners are Grinners!”
Year of the Rabbit
Members from Eaton Combined Probus Club gathered at the home of Club favourites Dorothy and Les to ring in the Chinese New Year! Every detail had been considered, as the Probians were treated to the very best food, drink, company, weather and ambience.
Guests were greeted with delicious, jade green cocktails and a scene artfully set with ornate bowls, Chinese spoons, and chop sticks. Decorations of fiery dragons, paper lanterns, and the odd stuffed rabbit, not outshining the hosts’ gorgeous garden.
The feast included spring onion pancakes with soy sauce, fantastic spring rolls, tasty vegetable soup, prawn salad with rice noodles, fried fish, superbly marinated ribs and the most enormous bowls of fried rice. A brief pause to draw breath, have a wine or three and a chat to the special people around. Then, dessert: a most interesting and authentic sweet potato and raisin sweet soup and then custard tarts and FRIED MILK!!!! Publicity Officer Chris raved about it. “What a revelation! The fried milk was so, so good and hardly any of us had even heard of it, let alone tasted it.”
With no detail spared, each guest received Chinese red envelopes with plastic gold and chocolate coins inside, as is the Chinese tradition. The day rounded off with fortune cookies and sparklers.
Their Probus friends give great credit to Dorothy and Les for all the work they put into organizing this very special event.

Centenary back to 19th Century
Seventeen members of The Probus Club of Centenary Suburbs recently enjoyed a Devonshire Tea on the verandah of Miegunyah House before doing a very interesting, guided tour. Miegunyah House was built in 1885 owned by the same family until 1926. After changing owners for decades, in 1967 the house was saved from demolition and used as a Museum of Pioneering Women of Queensland. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in October 1992 and has since been used as a late-19th Century Historic House Museum.

Soaking up the Sun in Santa Barbara
The Probus Club of North Gold Coast often meet at Charles Holm Park in Santa Barbara for a picnic lunch. Sometimes people bring rolls or sandwiches from home, sometimes the barbecue is used for gourmet sausages. There is always a lot of entertaining talk and jokes.
Broadbeach Ladies Paying it Forward
Guest Speaker, midwife Margaret Alcock, who supports the mothers of PNG and works with the charity Someone Who Cares, presented to the Broadbeach Ladies Probus Club recently.
Someone Who Cares works closely with impoverished communities through collecting and coordinating (new, reused, recycled and repurposed) items and transporting them to where they’re needed.
In remote villages in Papua New Guinea pregnant women are given a ‘Birthing Bundle’ in readiness for their delivery. These bundles are made up from donations of travel-sized soaps, nail brushes, safety pins, Op Shop sarongs, newborn baby clothes, wraps and light weight blankies, ladies underwear, children’s unisex shortie undies, second hand towels in good shape (to be cut into nappies, wash cloths or sanitary items,) glasses cases for sewing kits, small tape measure, buttons, scissors, sewing needles, coloured pins and thread.
Broadbeach Ladies were once again very generous with donations for Margaret to help out this worthy cause.

On Friday March 3rd 2023, 80 members and visitors attended the 30th Anniversary celebration of Watsonia Probus Club.
There were 11 foundation members in attendance, 3 of whom were on the original Management Committee and were invited to cut the beautiful cake. Thirteen Past Presidents were also in attendance and gathered for a photo.
Certificates of recognition of membership were presented to the founding members by the Club’s President, as well as those that have been members for more than 25 years.
Third floor of Flinders St Station – Rone Exhibit
An early morning coffee in Degraves St set the mood for the day. East Malvern Combined Probus was about to check out what is left of the Flinders St Station ballroom, and to see the exciting exhibition by Rone.
The group queued in Flinders St before riding the lift – a modern day addition –to the third floor where they were greeted by the Rone exhibition.
The tour travelled through several smaller rooms before finishing at the ballroom. Each room showcased Rone’s expertise. The windows in the corridor were covered by old newspapers, many of which referenced the late queen and her travels. The advertisements had many Probians reliving the past and the difference in pricing of items.
After the exhibition, the Probians crossed the road to Young and Jacksons to enjoy lunch.

30th Anniversary of Trafalgar and District Probus Club
Trafalgar and District Probus Club celebrated their 30th Anniversary this year. The foundation meeting was held 24th February 1993, followed by another meeting in March to establish the Management Committee.
Since then, there have been numerous bus trips, caravan trips, dine outs, walks, coffee mornings, guest speakers and even a garden group. Members have made lifelong friends, volunteered as committee members, learnt new things, holidayed around the state, walked many trails, been to live shows and eaten at numerous restaurants and pubs.
The beautiful birthday cake was cut by Peter (a Foundation and still active member) with the help of Olwyn (who had joined Probus a year later in 1994). Both are life members along with Les and Margaret and all have served the club on committee for many years.
Birthday Cake at the AGM
97 members attended the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club’s AGM. The event coincided with the Club’s 7th Birthday Celebrations.
Out-going President Carolyn inducted their 120th member (the 24th new member this year,) and introduced the new Management Committee – who were welcomed with a round of applause.
New President David thanked members for their support and encouraged all members to attend meetings and enjoy the activities to maintain the energy of the Club, as noted by many of the speakers during the year.
After the meeting, 47 members adjourned to the Burvale Hotel to enjoy lunch.
A New Committee Brings Fresh Ideas

Assistance Dog Lola (and her human) guest speak at Whittlesea
A Black, English Labrador Professional Assistance Dog named Lola visited the April meeting of The Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea. She also brought her companion, retired Army Warrant Officer Andrew Hall.
He spoke to the Probus Club about the role of Assistance Dogs, especially for use of retired servicepeople. Lola and dogs like her are trained to assist people who suffer from stress related illnesses. Andrew, like 11% of serving personnel, suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Lola can sense changes in Andrew that signal the onset of stress or distress and alerts him, even waking him in the night if needed. Andrew says Lola’s assistance has completely changed his life. After 2 years of Covid lockdowns, past President Geoff embarked on a plan of renewal and retention of members in the Combined Probus Club of Syndal.
Membership Drive Yields Results Busy Autumn Bees
The Club utilised complimentary personalised and promotional resources including personalised flyers, posters and business cards, provided by PSPL. Geoff encouraged members to bring a neighbour or friend along to each meeting. The Club also held October Probus Day celebrations in the Monash Seniors Festival and Rotary Market Day stalls.
These Club promotions are now yielding results, as 14 new members have been welcomed into the Club over this period. (6 new members this March, alone, pictured with Geoff.) The new President, Pam, is leading members in being welcoming to visitors to the Club and will continue to encourage more younger retirees to join their Probus Club.
The Probus Club of Pakenham Central have remained active as always and enjoying the glorious Autumn sunshine. In the last few weeks, their various interest groups have been out and about and visited the Rone exhibition at Flinders Street Station’s Ballroom, their walking group has enjoyed the elegant gum tree and members made it to the theatre to see Jersey Boys!

A S(t)upa week in Bendigo
Twenty members of the Combined Probus Club of Belmont Central Caravan and Camping Group holidayed in Bendigo for 4 nights in Autumn. They arrived on Monday, some members brought their own vans, others shared cabins, and some tried ‘glamping’ in Pods.
Tuesday’s adventure was to The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, Myers Flat. The Probians viewed ‘Peace Park,’ a 7-metre-tall Quan Yin statue and inside The Great Stupa itself, which houses the jade Buddha for Universal Peace – the largest Buddha carved from gem-quality jade in the world.
The group had dinner at the hotel again on Wednesday, after a free day – some spent cycling, others exploring Bendigo. Thursday was spent at Confectionery Capers (a misnomer,) a Willy Wonka-esque factory of mechanical toy displays with buttons to push and levers to pull and a lot of banging and clanging sounding from floor to the ceiling. This was followed by lunch at the Farmers Arms Hotel and a barbecue dinner and sing-along Thursday night. Travellers gave thanks to Adriana and Bev for all their efforts organising. What does a Club do to celebrate their 13th Birthday? A lucky birthday draw, of course!
Lucky for some! Mount Eliza’s Tour o’ Toora
The Combined Probus Club of Notting Hill also enjoyed a birthday cake, a party with members -including Past Presidents and Life Members – and guests, decorations, a new member inducted, a poem written by one of the oldest members, and snacks.
The Club has said they are sure to not “lose sight of the importance and commitment to social connection throughout the whole year. It is vital to [our] health and wellbeing.”
The new Management Committee planned the birthday bash, and has already connected with local seniors and partnered with the Monash Council to promote Probus, as well as planned some surprise activities for its members.
Sounds like a great start to the new Probus year!
The Probus Club of Mount Eliza Central squeezed so many meals and activities into their week away at Toora, they could barely get through the telling of it without a rest.
They arrived at their base at Toora Tourist Park in South Gippsland on a Sunday afternoon and were met with hot cross buns on arrival, served in the tourist park’s community centre.
Over the next six days they also managed to visit Fish Creek Hotel, walk the giant pier at Port Welshpool, stop at Yarram for lunch and check out the gorgeous mural’s there, inspect the Maritime Museum, a visit to the Port Albert Fish & Chippery over the water, bowls at Foster Bowlo, tested the Ciders and Scrumpy at Gurney Cider Outlet and enjoyed dinner at the Toora Pub.

ADVICE FROM FELLOW OCTOGENARIANS
A welcome to these honoured years. So make the most of time ahead. Some tips to help you on your way. Let’s live it up – before we’re dead.
Accept the offered seats on trams. Don’t stoop to pick up things you’ve dropped. At traffic lights glare at the crowds –it is for you that those cars stopped.
When tempted, as you oft will be, To say “Back in my day, you know …” Ignore the sighs and smirks you’ll get, Their day will also come – and go!
Our legs and arms have weakened, true. Indeed we all find stairs are tough. No harm in resting half way up. With those behind, just call their bluff.
Galling when young look right through us! Just fix them with a baleful glare. Brandish your cane before their eyes. They’ll get the message to beware.
So reader, hope these little tips Will help you on your way, my friend. There’s lots of living left to do. We’ll make our mark before we end …
Congratulations on joining our exclusive club.
