CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A happy involved life, is a healthier and longer life. WOW! what a year for our Probus Community and all of us personally. In some ways our lives have changed forever. If anyone had written a book in 2019 about 2020 and described the events of the past year no one would have believed it was all possible. Nevertheless, the proactive and positive way our Members, Clubs and Organisation have adapted, shows the ability, enthusiasm and commitment of all involved. Although there are still challenges ahead, New Zealand is certainly the best country in the world when you consider the low number of COVID-19 cases. Prior to the outbreak, with the support of the team at Probus South Pacific, it seemed that we were on the right track to grow our membership. The pandemic put a spanner in the works but as we learn to live with Covid-19, there are many retired persons seeking to make those social connections and renew their lives. What better way to achieve that than becoming a member of a Probus Club. A lot of Clubs have reported a renewed interest from members of the community to join a Probus Club. One Club in particular is waiting for an occasion to induct ten new members. My strong message at this time of disruption, for you and your Club, is to seek new members to keep your Club vibrant. Make sure when a visitor arrives at your Club they are greeted and introduced to a buddy for the day who hopefully becomes a close friend. When meeting or having a function, it is important that we, who have been in Probus for many years, do not stick in our little group but that we circulate and make potential new members feel very welcome. Probus can make a great difference to our lives in retirement and the health experts advise that a happy involved life is a healthier and longer life. Given the trials and tribulations of the past twelve months I would like to pay a particular tribute to Probus South Pacific Chief Executive Officer Silvana Martignago and her staff. They have all had to endure enormous challenges and changes to their procedures with lower staffing levels. They have come through in a very good condition so as to be able to support Clubs and members. I sincerely hope that as we head into a new Probus year each Probus Club is filled with fun, friendship, contentment and fulfillment. Please give thought to those less fortunate than us and focus on staying socially connected with all members, past and present.

auranga to Gisborne over the East Cape coast route takes 4hr. 43 minutes, on state highway 35. We were blown away; the immense azure blue coast stretched for miles, places of historical significance in our own country, some of which we would had not been aware of before this trip. The East Cape covers 18,500 Hectares which includes Gisborne the major city of the East Cape.

Opotiki, a small coastal town, one can relax on a sandy beach, enjoy the bike trails, sights, and there are many. Crossing the Opotiki River we watched, with great amusement, a solitary red horse taking himself for a river swim with no one else in sight. One horse town? Te Kaha Beach Resort, our first stop for the night. Owned and run by Te Runanga o Te Whanau. Well, was a delightful surprise to find a well set up, large resort in a small town. A lovely holiday time to say “Ahh. The resort overlooks a spectacular bay, which has inspired me to once again paint New Zealand scenery. Can’t wait! At 600 meters in length, it takes half an hour to walk to the end and back. It opened in 1929 for larger ships to load and offload goods, however a road was constructed through to Gisborne providing an alternate means of transport. The Wharf’s restoration project cost over 5.5 million dollars. Tolaga Bay

IT’S TIME TO CONSIDER NOT ONLY WHERE WE GO, BUT HOW WE GET THERE... WITH
international travel off the cards for the foreseeable future, many of us will be visiting parts of New Zealand for the first time. But it might not be the time to consider not only where we go, but how we get there. The Great Journeys of New Zealand offers the very best way to explore the country with scenic trains Northern Explorer, TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific and the iconic Interislander ferry.
World-famous train journeys What makes the trip special? Comfortable seats, panoramic windows, glass shelves and skylights just to name a few. These details bathe the train carriages in light and bring New Zealand’s famous landscapes to your seat. You can also take advantage of the on-board licensed café and GPS triggered at-seat audio commentary. Now comes the hard part – which part of the country to explore next. TranzAlpine, is recognised as one of the world’s best scenic train journeys by National Geographic Traveller. TranzAlpine crosses the Canterbury Plains and traverses along the thrilling viaducts of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, taking approximately 5.5 hours for a one10 |

way journey from Christchurch to Greymouth, or you can do a return journey in one-day. Sit back and relax as you take in views of snow-capped mountains, rolling farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train climbs up to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth – a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the popular glaciers. If you prefer ocean to the mountains, Coastal Pacific is the one for you. Travelling between Christchurch and Picton, the Coastal Pacific meanders breathtakingly close to the sea, where the roaring Pacific Ocean meets the rising Kaikãura mountains. Last, but not least is Northern Explorer, New Zealand’s longest running passenger service, the Northern Explorer is a longdistance scenic train service running between Auckland and Wellington, stopping at Palmerston North, Ohakune, National Park and Hamilton. The journey through Tongariro National Park, with its three spectacular volcanic mountains – Tongariro, Ngõuruhoe and
Ruapehu – is a highlight, a place of extremes and surprises, where snow-blanketed fields, ancient lava flows and dense beech forests can be seen side by side.
A new way to experience New Zealand And now your journey can be even more enjoyable with Scenic Plus now available on TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific journeys. This experience brings guests local delicacies, regional wines, captivating commentary and spectacular views. Our Scenic Plus crew are highly experienced, who know a thing or two about treating the customers and making the journey as enjoyable as it can be. Now, about food served on board. The menus, inspired by the regions, have been developed by partnering with LSG Sky Chefs, allowing us to tap into a strong network of local suppliers. The soothing sound of the moving train, magical views and scrumptious menu makes these scenic trains one to tick off the bucket list. garlic
AUTUMN GARDENING:
Words and Photos. Gillian Vine
ANCIENT texts from Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and India mention garlic as a food and for preventing or curing almost every known disease. To maintain or increase their strength, garlic was fed to Egyptian workmen slogging away on the pyramids and – for the same reason – given to athletes at the earliest Olympic Games in Greece, perhaps the first performanceenhancing drug. An easy-to-grow vegetable, garlic was traditionally planted on the shortest day, fine for those in areas that don’t have harsh winters, but here in Dunedin I like to have mine in by late May. There are two main types, hard neck and soft neck. Hard-neck garlic has a stiff stem and usually fewer cloves but they tend to be more even in size than soft-necked varieties. The soft-necked types are the ones to grow for plaiting the pliable stems and they reportedly keep better.

“FORAGERS SWEAR BY ALLIUM TRIQUETRUM, KNOWN HERE AS WILD ONION OR WILD GARLIC.” Foragers swear by Allium triquetrum, known here as wild onion or wild garlic. It’s not the same as ramsons (A. ursinum), the wild garlic widely found in Europe, and our version is a pale imitation of real garlic, as well as being a pernicious garden weed. You can plant supermarket garlic but imported bulbs from China are not recommended, as these may carry pathogens. Garlic loves rich, well-drained soil with lots of sun to ripen the bulbs. Press cloves into the ground, about 20cm apart, leaving the tips exposed, then sit back for six months. When the tops have died down, dig on a sunny day and leave to dry before storing. Before peeling garlic, squash it with the blade of a heavy knife. The skin comes off much more easily than when peeling is attempted without squashing. To get rid of the smell on a chopping board, rub in salt or a cut lemon, then rinse with cold water before washing. The old wives’ answer to pongy garlic breath was to eat more garlic – but be careful who you test this on!
TOP: GARLIC NEEDS RICH SOIL AND SUNSHINE TO DO WELL; CENTRE: DRY GARLIC BEFORE STORING; RIGHT: CRUSH GARLIC BEFORE PEELING TO MAKE THE TASK EASIER.

RETIREMENT LIVING
ASKING THE QUESTIONS, GETTING THE ANSWERS
16 |
issue 30 • autumn 2021
Words. John Collyns, Executive Director
THE Consumers’ Institute report into “unfair” contract terms that was released on 2 February 2021 raised a number of questions about retirement village contracts (called “Occupation Right Agreements”, or ORA) that it’s worth looking at here. We are also aware that intending residents are faced with a huge range of retirement village options so it pays to know what questions to ask and get the right answer for you.
The financial aspects The traditional retirement village model requires you to pay an initial capital sum in exchange for the right to live in your village unit and enjoy the amenities available. When you leave, you or your estate will get back between 70% and 80% of the initial capital sum you paid on entry. The 20-30% retained by the operator is called the “Deferred Management Fee” or DMF, and is applied to bringing your unit back to as new, and your use of the village amenities such as the swimming pool, the library or the bowling green. It’s also the operator’s return on their investment of many tens of millions of dollars in building and running the village. While in the village you will pay a weekly fee towards the fixed costs of living there which covers matters such as the rates, insurance, staff salaries, and so on. Most operators now offer a fixed weekly fee, which provides certainty, but they may also charge you for extra services such as changing light bulbs, having food delivered to your room, or hanging pictures. The upside is that any general village cost increases such as insurance or rates aren’t going to affect you, the downside is that costs for some personal services may become additional. Make sure that if you’re offered a fixed weekly fee, you understand what, if any, the
RETIREMENT LIVING
“extras” cover and are likely to cost. All Retirement Villages Association members should offer you a Summary of Key Terms that is a twopage template that summarises all the key financial, transfer to care and other important matters so you can compare easily one village’s offering with the next.
Capital gain sharing Most villages do not offer residents a share in the capital gain, but some villages do. If getting a share of any capital gain is important for you, make sure you ask the question and chose a village that does this. Remember though, that the current boom housing market isn’t going to be forever and it can quickly change, like it did 11 years ago in the GFC. You may find yourself liable for capital loss. Getting rid of the hassles of home ownership is a key reason why people move to a village.
You don’t own the land or house, so maintenance isn’t your responsibility. If there’s a leaky building problem – and villages are no less prone to this than a conventional home – you don’t have to worry about it. Some operators have spent hundreds of millions of dollars fixing leaky buildings and it hasn’t cost the resident a cent. But if you’re sharing capital gain you need to be aware that you may also be liable for these sorts of costs.
Appliances When you move into a village unit or apartment, the operator will have restored it to “as new”, or it may actually be a brand-new unit. The whiteware and appliances will
also often be new and covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee that protects both you and the operator against defects. Alternatively, you may provide your own appliances, in which case responsibility for their upkeep is entirely yours. Most operators require the resident to be responsible for care and maintenance of the operatorowned chattels, especially for things that are consumable (such as light bulbs, to take an obvious example). We’ve told our members that the boundary between what the operator is responsible for and what you are responsible for should be explicit in the ORA. If there’s a grey area, the benefit of the doubt should lie with the resident and the issue 30 • autumn 2021

operator meets the cost. Make sure your lawyer explains the differences to you when you have your mandatory legal briefing on the ORA and disclosure statement.
Transfer to care We know that many residents chose a village that offers a continuum of care so they have peace of mind that should some medical incident occur, there’s care on site. Of course, that assumes that a bed is actually available on the day you need it, but operators who offer care also state that village residents have priority on a care bed over someone in the community. How the actual transfer occurs varies from operator to operator. Some will terminate the ORA in your independent unit and transfer the remaining capital balance to the care suite. Others will require you to terminate your village unit and purchase a new ORA in care. If you don’t want to purchase an ORA in care, you might be offered 18 |
issue 30 • autumn 2021
"WE KNOW THAT MANY RESIDENTS CHOSE A VILLAGE THAT OFFERS A CONTINUUM OF CARE SO THEY HAVE PEACE OF MIND THAT SHOULD SOME MEDICAL INCIDENT OCCUR, THERE’S CARE ON SITE." the opportunity to pay a premium charge for a large, well-appointed care suite. The third option is to move to a standard rest home or hospital room, and if your assets are below the Government’s threshold for a subsidy, the state will meet your care costs. Whatever the arrangements are, your ORA should specify clearly how the transfer works. The Retirement Villages Association has issued a set of best practice guidelines for our members on what to disclose about the transfer that will answer these questions clearly for you. Make sure your lawyer explains these details to you – it may, with any luck, be years away but if
it’s important, make sure you understand the implications of a transfer to care.
Other matters Village will have different approaches around matters such as visitors staying with you, pets, parking camper vans and boats, your car port, sharing a villageowned car fleet, keeping a garden, and sharing village amenities with everyone else. They will have rules around lockdowns (as we’ve all learnt), and other things to keep everyone safe. VILLAGE LIFE HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD NEW Zealand’s population is an aging one. Retirement Homes and Aged Care facilities are growing and changing, and being reimagined by the day. The expectations of this very discerning market are also increasing, with every facility having to keep up to date and truly listen to their residents. Aged Advisor New Zealand has been at the forefront of the sector since 2015, giving residents and
families an opportunity to share their village and care experiences via an online review platform. With over 6000 in-depth reviews on more than 700 facilities nationwide, AgedAdvisor is now sharing those results in print form. The release of a glossy, premium ‘coffee-table’ style magazine will showcase awardwinning villages and care homes, as voted by the public. The magazine is due to come out mid/late March. THE LAST TABOO – LET’S TALK ABOUT LIFE’S LITTLE LEAKS LIGHT
bladder leakage affects one in three women and one in five men – so why don’t we hear more about it? Urinary incontinence can be experienced by anyone at any age, but is particularly common in women after menopause, and in men after prostate cancer treatment. However, up to 90
percent of those with leakage issues won’t even talk to their doctor about it. So why are we afraid of discussing such a common medical condition? Anyone who’s experienced bladder leakage knows that it can be a blow to your self-confidence. For some, fear of an incident leads to planning their day around
access to bathrooms, curtailing their travel plans and giving up activities they love. For older people, rushing to the loo at night can lead to falls and injuries, and the logistics of coping with bladder leakage can even lead to unnecessary admission to long-term care. The team at Kiwi company Confitex knows this because they’ve talked to hundreds of women and men while developing and testing their new range of Just’nCase absorbent briefs for women and Confitex for Men trunks for light-tomoderate bladder leakage. Some users have been kind enough to share their stories to try to break down the barriers surrounding the issue –people like Pat, who’s in her eighties but hasn’t let that slow her down. “I have shown my Confitex products to my 84-year-old sister and my 60-year-old daughter. Like me, they each had four children and are now suffering from incontinence. “I use only your products and wear them day and night so I can relax knowing I won’t leak all over the place. The new ones are very comfortable, having the stretchy material rather than elasticised legs and waistband. They are far less bulky as well, which means my waistline is slimmer. They’re easier to dry and lighter in weight. “I’m very happy! Thank you Confitex! “I’m happy for you to use my feedback, and I don’t mind my name being used. I’m not ashamed of being incontinent. I do kegels every day, go to tai chi twice a week and have a personal trainer at the gym for two 30-minute sessions a week. Like most octogenarians, I am getting a bit less able than before, but I still lead an okay life! “Best wishes, Pat.” Read more real-life experiences on our blogs at justncase.co.nz

Gut health
Seventy to 80 per cent of our immune cells reside in our gut, so it makes sense that foods supportive of gut health are also helpful for immunity. Clinical studies have shown that BB-12 increases the body’s resistance to common respiratory infections as well as reduces the incidence of acute respiratory tract infections. Probiotics are available in supplement form but can also be found in wholefoods such as yoghurt, kefir, fermented vegetables, miso and tempeh.”
Hydration There’s a flip side to all those highfibre foods: they can leave you with sluggish bowel movements and unpleasant digestive symptoms. The best way to combat this is via hydration. Drinking at least two litres of water per day is extremely important to help soften and bulk your stools which will help to keep gut and immune function optimal.

WAYS TO BOOST IMMUNITY TRUTH is that boosting your immune health has always been incredibly important. And one of the simplest ways to do this is through healthy eating. Often, we take the “shortcut” of jumping straight into medication and supplement use, but while these can be useful after seeking the appropriate medical advice, the fact is that there are some incredibly effective ways to ensure optimal immune function with good everyday habits and dietary choices.
High-fibre foods It’s important to support good gut health with good everyday eating habits, fibre-rich foods is the way to go. Fibre is what feeds the bacteria in our gut so aim to pack out your diet with a mix of fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds.
Exercise Exercise can stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in our gut. However, what we know is that consistency of exercise is important as any changes in the composition of bacteria that occur from exercise are lost once the exercise is ceased.
Stress management With our gut and brain being able to communicate directly, employing stress management tools will go a long way to improving not just your gut and immune health, but also overall health.

Feeling breathless? Often, the first symptom of aortic stenosis is a little shortness of breath during activity. For example, you might notice that it's a little harder to walk up a flight of stairs or carry groceries or you can’t walk the dog as far as you used to be able to. As the symptoms tend to come on gradually people don't always recognize them or just think they are naturally slowing down as they are getting older. The earlier heart valve problems are picked up the sooner your doctor can help you find the best treatment option.

THE WORLD OF NAD+ – A HEALTH STORY EVERY cell in the body utilises nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to carry out more than 400 crucial cellular reactions required for life. For this reason, NAD+ is often described as central to supporting cellular health. However, it’s only recently that scientists have begun to truly understand the importance of NAD+ and that it declines with age and when in high demand during times of illness, injury, stress or when needed to repair cellular damage. NAD+ is a co-enzyme which provides support for all our cells to stay healthy. Heart, brain, nerve
and eye cells, muscle and bone cells, liver, kidney, skin and immune cells all use NAD+ and other nutrients for their daily energy and maintenance. In the past decade, Prof. Charles Brenner, the world’s foremost authority on NAD+ metabolism discovered that the body’s naturally preferred NAD+ precursor, was a nutrient called nicotinamide riboside (NR). In the case of NR, that means its converted into the NAD+ molecule in our cells. After years of scientific research and rigorous testing at some of the top research institutes around
the globe, NR has been patented NIAGEN® and is available in dietary supplement form. “NAD+ has a role in wellness at every stage. It supports our health from the inside. When NAD levels are low, our cells can’t produce the energy they need to support our health as we age” says Prof. Charles Brenner.

THE CHANGING FACE OF CANNABIS THE reputation of the cannabis plant is quickly changing with significant potential as a medicine. Its new human face is also very different. Elizabeth Plant, with a successful career in pharmacy, is a Chief Medical Officer for Eqalis Pharmaceuticals, a Bay of Plenty company and one of the new emerging medical cannabis pharmaceutical companies. Her career in pharmacy has included President of the New Zealand Pharmaceutical Society, Chief Pharmacist of Taranaki DHB and a consultant pharmacist for organizations such as Corrections, Southern Cross health Insurance and a member of all the national medical safety committees. “Cannabis is a very complex plant with more than 120 cannabinoid, 200 terpenes (compounds that smell such as limonene), and flavonoids
ELIZABETH PLANT.
(flavours), all these compounds have therapeutic potential” said Elizabeth. Elizabeth was attracted to the role of chief medical officer because of the enormous potential cannabis presents as a medicine. “As a pharmacist it was an irresistible challenge to develop safe and
effective medical formulations for a number of medical conditions” she said. Medical conditions for which the cannabis plant could hold potential, include treating chronic pain, anxiety, sleep disorders, epilepsy, nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and spascity caused by Multiple Sclerosis or spinal cord damage. “The components of cannabis (THC and CBD) mimic the natural endocannabinoids in our body. These are responsible for keeping the body system in balance. Many current mainstream medicines prescribed today were derived from plants and cannabis presents us with a treasure chest of opportunity for a variety of treatments. However, as with any medicine there are possible drug interactions and adverse effects such as the psychoactive effects of THC (which give you a high). So, it’s very important that any new medicines are formulated to achieve the best outcome for each specific condition being treated. It’s an exciting new field of medicine” says Elizabeth. Eqalis was established in early 2019, with founding shareholders resolved to build an industry, from the ground up, in the horticultural heart of Bay of Plenty. Business Manager of Eqalis, Brendon Ogilvy, said that since the earliest days of this emerging category, tenacity, agility and innovative thinking would be needed to discover and bring the medicinal qualities of the cannabis plant to people. “We are at the very forefront of New Zealand medical cannabis research and it is a fascinating journey of discovery already” says Brendon. Please consult with your doctor to ensure both access and supply of the Medicinal Cannabis is right for the treatment of your condition. issue 30 • autumn 2021

ACCOMMODATION
I
n a land not short of competition in terms of luxury accommodation this haven of relaxation is a leisurely threehour drive from Auckland’s frenetic world and a place where Alex van Heeran rebuilt his dream hideaway. It was in 1984 that Alex and Anne Marie first caught sight of Huka Lodge. Back then it was a modest cluster of canvas huts with a reputation as a sanctuary for would-be anglers complete with good food in an open home hosted by Alan and Leila Pye the Irish owners. Today Huka Lodge has been transformed into a world class retreat that is a favourite haunt for royalty, the rich and famous and other dignitaries. You don’t need a pedigree to stay here just an appreciation of congenial surroundings, warm hospitality and exemplary food and wine. The first thing you need to know Huka Lodge is not as expensive as you might imagine. Off-season tariffs start at $1125pp and includes cocktails, a 5-course dinner, breakfast and lunch to die for and if you’ve travelling by air transfers to and from Taupo Airport. The second thing you need to know is that as locals we are so fortunate to have such a prestigious get-a-way on our doorstep. Set on 18 acres the location is majestic. First view is a continuous line of rustic cabins along the banks of the mighty Waikato River offering guest’s country living at its best. The Lodge itself stands solitary dwarfed only by towering trees, manicured gardens, the bucolic bliss of native bush and the constant roar of distant rapids cascading over Huka Falls. The highest honour bestowed on accommodation is five plus stars, in a few exceptional cases they go higher and Huka Lodge has fallen into this category regularly. All the cabins have super-king size beds,
cosy chairs for lounging, a romantic fireplace and an exquisite en-suite bathroom with the added comfort of underfloor heating. Then there’s the owner’s cottage situated on an elevated and sunny promontory above the river. This stylish and state of the art residence has a self-contained kitchen, den complete with a wide TV screen, DVD and computer amenities. Four-guest suites are anchored by a central living and dining area that opens out to a large deck and
a cantilevered infinity pool and heated spa. Two guest suites face the river, the other two enjoy private courtyards. The living room is the hub of the cottage with a stunning stone fireplace for blazing log fires on a cold winter’s night. This is a facility that’s ideally suited for company executives wanting that special hideout for an out-oftown meeting or the perfect refuge for those who loathe the trappings of the glamour resort but still want a total escape. issue 30 • autumn 2021

OWNER’S COTTAGE INFINITY POOL.
SOUTHLAND LAMB.
Dining at the Lodge is a sophisticated experience. Executive chef Paul Frogott’s hallmark seems to be the personal refinements he brings from his years at top notch hotels and restaurants around the globe. It’s from here and his time at Gidleigh Park Hotel and numerous two and three Michelin– Star restaurants in the UK and France that he adopted the idea of traditional French cuisine with a light New Zealand touch.
Dinner is about not choosing what to eat but where to eat it. With ever casual air and graciousness our hosts have subtlety inquired to where our preference to dine, the library, trophy room, drawing room, wine cellar, the terrace overlooking the river or alongside one of the outdoor fireplaces - all truly romantic settings. The table d’hôte menu changes daily and more than lives up to expectations. A typical bill of
fare could include chicken soup with tarragon tortellini followed by crayfish with verjuice foam, citrus salt and sautéed cos. Then a delicate goat cheese with beetroot balsamic vinaigrette and herb salad was served before our principal dish of lamb loin with jus of cabernet, potato and mushroom chips and silver beet. At dessert time we succumb to the chocolate truffle, ice cream and jaffa mousse - magnificently rich but delicately flavoured. The perfect ending is a glass of port and petit fours by the open fire in the drawing room. There’s is no overt chauvinism shown towards imported wines. The wine list is heavy on local vintages and covers practically every winegrowing region of New Zealand. Our only criticism the unavailability issue 30 • autumn 2021

of at least some of the wines by the glass. Anyway we’re more than happy to settle for a ’18 Villa Maria cellar selection sauvignon blanc, a fine generous wine that was a perfect match for all of the dishes on the menu. Should boredom set in there’s a myriad of activities ranging from fly fishing, tennis, golf, petanque, horse riding, jet boating, kayaking, bungy jumping and white-water rafting after which relax, reflect and be invigorated with a massage that promises a new lease of life. Signing the visitor’s book we observe what other guests have recorded with Dame Edna’s comments perhaps the most appropriate as to why Huka Lodge is sought by so many. “In life’s mad race I quite forgot the world held such a tranquil place, where waters glide by glassy green and cars I neither heard nor seen”.

Catlins
Stewart Island
We are spending three nights there to see all that there is to see. This includes surf beaches, waterfalls, nature trails, ship wrecks, an historic lighthouse, seals, dolphins and other wildlife, very accommodating people and a good slice of local history (with family connections).
We are first time visitors and are staying at the iconic Half Moon Bay pub. We will do some gentle walks and explore the island. Getting there is an adventure in itself. But food, people and nature are the principal attractions.
Christchurch
Central Otago
How to holiday in a city in recovery. It is possible but not necessarily easy. The beach is messy and really only half the city is functioning, although the centre is recovering. But the surrounding areas and the west side are functioning and desperate for visitors.
We intend to explore Queenstown and Arrowtown the town but our focus will be more on Central Otago with excursions to Wanaka and Hawea and back through Tarras and Luggate. St Bathans, Ranfurly and Naseby and back to Cromwell. Cromwell and Alexandra to highlight the separate delights of Central Otago

ADJUSTABLE BEDS – EASE AND COMFORT AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON Buying a new bed is an important decision and not one that should be rushed. These days there are so many options, it can be hard to decide on just one. An adjustable bed is a great solution. With an adjustable bed you can move the bed to your desired sleeping position and there’s added benefits such as being able to raise your head to read. When you buy an adjustable bed, you’re buying a bed that can be altered to exactly what you want.
Features and Benefits • Being able to adjust your bed can help with health issues such as poor circulation, heart burn and breathing problems. • If you and your partner prefer to sleep in different positions, you can choose a split model. With a split bed base, each side of the bed can be independently moved - one person can have the bed laid flat to sleep while the other can lift the back up and read in bed at the same time. • Another advantage of a split bed is that you and your partner can each select the mattress comfort you desire – even if one person prefers super firm and the other likes their mattress soft, there’s no compromise needed. • The base can be paired with different customisable headboard styles to suit your bedroom décor. Select from upholstered headboards or beautifully crafted timber designs. As well as having movement features, upgraded models have additional functions such as vibrating massage settings, alarms, speakers, Bluetooth capability and under bed lighting. You deserve a rejuvenating, restful sleep every night, so head into your local Harvey Norman and let our sleep experts help find the perfect bed for you - an adjustable bed might be just what you’re looking for. It was held at Pines Beach which is very near their Club meeting venue. 42 members attended along with a couple of spouses and some grandchildren. Members played some games including throw the gumboot and also tug of war. It was a great day and the weather was perfect. This is the clubs second year running holding this event and they hope to continue it as an Annual event.

PROBUS CLUB OF KAPITI COAST No.1 Wine Appreciation Group attending the Christmas outing – boozy tastings at the Kawakawa Gin, Vodka and Lemonchello distillery in Kapiti. All went home very happy.
ROYDVALE PROBUS On 23rd January, a good number of Club members farewelled Mary, whose energy and enthusiasm will always be remembered. Many of the members were probably asked or encouraged by Mary to join Roydvale Probus. She went on nearly every one of the longer trips organized by Probus and often contributed ideas for activities or just fun socializing. On the New Plymouth Garden tour in 2014 she discovered the local symphony orchestra were playing and at short notice organized a few to go to a performance one evening. When she was welfare officer on the committee, members remembered her pep talks on fitness and even had everyone up on their feet doing a simple exercise. Another time she surprised everyone all with her talk on one of her passions – shoes. Out of her bags came a great variety of footwear all with a story of a special occasion or why she loved them. The very special pair she wanted on her coffin and there they were next to all the flowers on her lavender casket. When she was President and could not get anyone to compose the Clubs Scroll newsletter, she bought a laptop and set about doing it herself, continuing to do it until the last few months of 2020. Mary was a keen sportswoman, particularly tennis and golf and even when she was struggling with ill health she bought an electric bike and enthused about the joys of cycling. The Club were very fortunate to have Mary as a member and President of Roydvale Probus.
NEWMARKET PROBUS Member Yvonne, received a colourful pot plant from Newmarket Probus in recognition and celebration of her 90th birthday. Congratulations to Yvonne from all the Club members.
