Chair Message
Firstly, I would like to thank Tony Blaber for his valuable contribution to the Board of PSPL over the past few years, and I am also very happy to welcome Margaret Drake back to the Board. Margaret made an invaluable contribution in the past as a Representative Member and also Chairman of the Board, and I look forward to working closely with her over the next three years.
Since joining Probus in 2007, I have seen first-hand the difference it makes to people’s lives. I truly believe that Probus provides an invaluable service to our local communities by helping us stay engaged and connected. As we change, so do the communities we live in, and Probus must learn to adapt if we want to attract the next generation of Probians to our Clubs.
Younger retirees need community and companionship in the same way as older people, and successful Clubs are looking at ways of attracting younger members. Younger retirees may be looking for a new range of activities and experiences as part of their membership, and I would be interested to hear from any Clubs that have looked at innovative ways of attracting younger members. Please let me know of your ideas by emailing me directly at michaelransom@ probussouthpacific.org.
On the first of October, we begin our Probus Month celebrations in line
with the United Nations Day of the Older Person. Probus Day started in 2020 and has been so successful that it has become Probus Month. However, you and your Club decide to mark this special occasion –I extend a very Happy Probus Month to all Probians across New Zealand.
Michael Ransom Chairman 2023 - 2024"This is my first column as Chair of Probus South Pacific Limited and I would like to say ‘Kia ora” to all our Probus members in New Zealand.
As South as you can easily go
By Dee Harris and Gilbert PetersonA friend asked me ‘what was the worst part’ about a recent trip my husband and I made to Rakiura (Stewart Island). Straight away I was back to Day 2 of our three-day Great Walk on the Rakiura Track. That was a slog of a day, slipping, and sloshing, and a major distraction from the very beautiful bush.
But that wasn’t the worst part. For that I went back to “Ground Zero” at the very outset. I am a planner and in June 2022 when the Great Walk huts were released for bookings as they are every year, most places are gone within minutes. I had booked for our walk right away. Then spent hours planning how flights would connect with buses, and buses would connect with transfer companies and ferries, carefully putting all the puzzle pieces together. It was exhausting really, but worth it for the sense of relief that everything was ready to go. Then I left it to hubby to set the alarm clock for 5am for the early morning drive to the airport. I slept like a log.
At 6am hubby jumped out of bed with alarming speed - something to see these days - suddenly aware he had set the time for the alarm to go off but not actually setting the alarm! We tore into the early morning stressed to the max. The chance of missing our flight? 99%. The trip was
just two days after Cyclone Gabrielle caused dozens of flight cancellations too; passengers were backed way up on the flights we now needed. Waiting in line with the poor, invalid excuse that we’d forgot to set the alarm clock! Stress city for hours!
A highly competent Air NZ rescheduling attendant worked her way through all the options over many minutes to find, yes, she could get us to Invercargill late that evening. So we only had to wait around at the airport for 7 hours, a minor inconvenience and welldeserved punishment.
Invercargill, with help from the ghost of Burt Monro, pitches itself somewhat as a mecca for motorcycle and veteran car and truck enthusiasts, especially the E Hayes store with its real time hardware retailing integrated with motorcycle relics and modern classics, including Munro’s world speed record machines and replicas made for the
movie.
The city offers other marvels, importantly for those of us who love architecture, such as the magnificent Water Tower and The First Presbyterian Church. We spent a day walking around enjoying these astonishments.
The fine-looking museum was closed due to it being deemed an
earthquake risk, and the same applied to other notable buildings. But surely a city full of engineers, who can restore machinery of all vintages, will find ways to restore their beautiful landmarks.
We were picked up next day heading to the Bluff ferry terminal for the trip across Foveaux Straight, known as a treacherous and turbulent stretch of water but home to a cornucopia of sea species that for centuries have attracted hunters and fascinated humans. Early Europeans found the Maori name Te Ara a Kewa, the Path of the Whale, proven accurate; 19th century whalers hunted the giant humpbacks, sperm and southern right whales. (Whale hunting only became illegal in 1978.) From the late 1700s sealers were often left on islands in the area to kill seals, trusting the ships that left them there would return. Entire seal populations on many islands were wiped out. Bluff oysters reputed to be the best in the world have been fished
since the 1860s. And mutton bird hunting has been managed by Rakiura Maori for centuries, with the various species of petrel collected from the Titi Islands near Stewart Island. The bird is said to be an acquired taste, a unique delicacy.
We arrive in Half Moon Bay at Oban, the settlement on the island boasting a permanent population of 400. Flocks of tourists inflate the numbers to thousands over summer. For the most part this is a one street town albeit with everything one needs: a compact Four Square supermarket, Rakiura’s history museum, the National Park Visitor Centre, shops and several cafés, even an open air lounge area where locals hang out to chew the fat, and the pub.
We heard people talking of seeing kiwis. The chances are high given over 15,000 of them live on the island. But I wanted to be certain to see one so signed us up to a Beaks and Feathers tour run by local Angela Karaitiana. She offers a
variety of guided walks and is very knowledgeable. We met at 10pm but even before leaving on the tour proper, a kiwi arrived! Apparently it’s a resident with an abode somewhere nearby. Using a red-light torch which doesn’t disturb the kiwis we watched breathless a large brown kiwi foraging, close up and unconcerned about our presence. I so wanted to reach down and touch it, but didn’t, then it found the edge of my shoe, got discombobulated, somersaulted, and fled into the night.
Our party made our way out to the local airstrip. Angela’s company has exclusive rights at night there and kiwis nesting in the nearby bush come out at night on the grass verge of the airstrip to forage. It was just so convenient to walk the paved airstrip in the dark while scanning the area with red light. And star gazing. We saw several more kiwis, some just juveniles about 5 months old, and a baby so small it was hard to see at all. The following day a 15minute ferry
ride from Golden Bay took us to the predator free sanctuary of Ulva Island. The weather-worn and wiry captain was keen to point out his ferry was the smaller one that took conservation seriously. A numbered leaf served as the sustainable ferry ticket!
The bays around Stewart Island have more species of seaweed than anywhere else in New Zealand with kelp there said to grow over 10m tall.
We could see in the clear, turquoise water many jellyfish, various small fish and a small shark.
Ulva island can be walked around in 2 to 3 hours and it’s a lovely refuge to Miromiro (Tomtit), Toutouwai (Stewart Island Robin), Kakariki (parakeet), Kiwis, and many Weka keen to steal your lunch. We were careful to keep a safe distance from the Sea Lions basking on one of the sheltered beaches.
The finale of our stay was the three-day Great Walk which, apart from Day 2 as above, was so enjoyable; many beautiful bays and the dense and diverse native bush. Other trampers reported seeing kiwis along the trail, while graceful white tail deer seemed far too numerous around the huts. The deer were said to have been gifted to New Zealand by American President Teddy Roosevelt in 1905 though it maybe he gifted the elk released in Fiordland National Park with the white tail deer brought from New Hampshire in the US about the same time. Controlled hunting is permitted to keep their numbers in check.
At the end of our tramp we lunched at the South Seas Hotel, the aforementioned pub, with a Kiwi bloke, Nigel, who has lived in France for 30 years with his French wife, Sabine. The pub is the town’s epicentre, bursting with atmosphere from old photos of the island and its
residents. The beer is excellent too, as is the cuisine. After lunch Nigel offered to get coffees and I ask for a trim flat white. He said he had never heard of such a thing. It seems New Zealand has developed its own coffee culture during his time away!
Rakiura is far simpler to visit than I had thought, and the locals take good care of you. Our memories now are of beautiful scenery and the stark, clear night sky. We had got up close to the local wildlife, met some fascinating people, and heard great stories at this marvellous place as far south as you can easily go in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Certainly is as far south as you can go. Dee and Gilbert have been there and back and what they discovered makes great reading.
Come rain or shine
Dennis and Rosamund Knill take the time to discover and enjoy one of Queensland’s natural wonders and unspoiled beauty
fishing village and once home to urban hippies. In less than sixty years Mooloolaba has been transformed itself into one of Queensland’s most popular holiday destinations
With a population of 275,000 the Sunshine Coast encompasses luxury resorts, surf beaches, pristine waterways, charming historic villages and rural hinterland from Caloundra to Grand Sandy Park, home to sand dunes, mangrove forests and shallow lakes.
Boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year with temperatures that seldom fall below 20 degrees, Mooloolaba is one of five Queensland’s jewels that make up the Sunshine Coast that stretches from Caloundra, Maroochydore, and Coolum to Noosa.
We must be the god of rain, or at least the goddess of rain because whenever we venture overseas on holiday it usually rains
After an early start and an uneventful flight across the Tasman we set off for Mooloolaba the gateway to the Sunshine Coast. As we settle in for the ninety-minute leisurely drive along the Bruce Highway the sun is beating down with relentless urgency. Bravo, were told it hasn’t been raining here for weeks!
Our arrival into Mooloolaba was instantly appealing. First impressions it’s one of those places that encourages you to go back
home, sell up and return to live here permanently. Not surprisingly many Kiwis have done just that. One of those was the late Glenn Buckland who undoubtedly put Mooloolaba on the map
Thanks to the pandemic we have been grounded for three years so there’s much excitement to be back travelling internationally again. For the next ten days we will be exploring the region, sampling culinary offerings and visiting some of the tourist attractions on offer. Although it helps to remember that Mooloolaba is the base of the Sunshine Coast, there was a time when it was just a small sleepy
While the big four are the best supporting actors, in contrast Mooloolaba will always be the star attraction. It’s the perfect escape for a retreat-style holiday or that much needed winter break For active retirees some of the activities include seven golf courses, deep sea fishing, surfing, mountain climbing, a 55km 4 day walk through the hinterland, short and long walks through national parks and lush rainforests and visits to wonderful wineries and craft beer breweries 3pm, it’s a brilliant afternoon and a warm tropical breeze wafts across the beach and onto the esplanade. As we are escorted to our luxury apartment at the Peninsular Beachfront Resort all we can see from the balcony is clear blue sky, a breath-taking stretch of coastline, a white sandy beach and
spectacular surf with hundreds of happy swimmers bobbing blissfully up and down in the breakers. Welcome to Mooloolaba, once the land of the red belly snake
The Peninsular Beachfront Resort with sixty-five self-service apartments each with full kitchens, air conditioning, flat-screen televisions and free Wi-Fi, gymnasium, sauna, swimming pool, a flood-lit tennis court and secure on-site undercover parking will be our home base. Long established as Mooloolaba’s centrepiece and one of the highest ranking resorts on the coast its stylish surroundings are set in the heart of the narrow lines of low rise apartments that grace one of the
most coveted stretches of prime real estate in Queensland. Central to the many tourist attractions there’s an irresistibly laid-back atmosphere generated from Scott Bowering and his team who manage the complex The redevelopment of the Esplanade has seen an explosion of lavish apartments and resorts with spectacular vistas. Along the way there is an abundance of boutiques, cafes and alfresco restaurants. Whilst Mooloolaba is better for the experience the locals are acutely aware of over commercialising the shire and to maintaining a strict policy of no high rise constructions, otherwise it could end up like the Gold Coast, its southern competitor
Each day begins at dawn for our daily caffeine fix at one of the many cafes along the esplanade before a one hour casual walk along the beach.
Two hours earlier sand grooming machines have manicured the beach in readiness for the early morning joggers, swimmers, fitness freaks and the body beautifuls
Welcome to the big spenders? Each evening we head off to the Mooloolaba Surf Club to try our luck on the poker machines at one cent at a time. Over the entire 10 days we came out $40 richer for the experience!
Time to head north and a drive to Maleny on the edge of the Blackall Ranges with views all the way to Brisbane. As the road winds through the hinterlands and forest you can catch sight of green pastoral landscapes and vineyards.
In another sense this is some of the richest country in the region and driving into Montville you feel that you have stumbled across a place known to few others. The main street is overflowing with cafes, boutiques, food stores, art galleries and specialty shops so allow plenty of time to take it all in.
Much has been written about Noosa, long regarded by many as the premier destination in the whole of Queensland. It’s the prettiest shire on the coast renowned for its wide variety of 5-star beach front
accommodation and restaurants. For foodies it’s stacked with some of Australia’s best celebrity chefs serving the finest cuisine. And if you’re looking for some serious retail therapy Hastings Street is studded with designer label boutiques Heading back midway between Mooloolaba and Noosa is Coolum, a classic coastal town famous for its all year long patrolled surf beaches. There is a lot that you can say about Coolum and it’s all about contrast. Mount Coolum defines the town with its majestic presence. It’s a huge attraction for those energetic enough wanting to climb it and the stunning views once on top. Nestled below this giant monolith is Palmer Resort a 150-acre retreat with an international golf course
Winding your way back to the highway is home of the world’s largest ginger processor in Yardine that’s filled with fun and discovery. Across the road is Nutworks, a macadamia
and chocolate calorie-driven processing factory that guarantees that you won’t leave without gaining a few extra kilos
Held every Wednesday and Saturday rain, hail or shine, Enmundi Markets located amongst towering fig trees is Australia’s biggest bazaar. Established back in the seventies there are over 500 stalls full of real bargains of local arts and crafts, jewellery, original clothing and fresh produce
Back in Mooloolaba the Sea Life Aquarium is an amazing fortress of amazing aquatic sea creatures, maneating sharks, playful otters, a seal show and just about every other form of sea life are a compelling must do The Sunshine Coasts biggest attraction will always be Australia Zoo in Beerwah. Set on 65 hectares the wildlife on show is enormous and well worth a visit. No matter what time you arrive there’s always something happening.
Before the sun goes down we take a one-and-a-halfhour cruise on the river and adjoining canals of Mooloolaba with Coastal Cruises that house some of the most expensive real estate in Queensland.
Included in the price is a fresh seafood meal and a tab from a fully licensed bar
Dining out most evenings we found the overall standard of cuisine failed to fill our expectations. However there were three eateries that satisfied our standards. RB (modern Australian), Fish on Parkyn (seafood) and Raw and Rice (poke bowl). Others that you might like to try are Nobuzo (Japanese), Psari (Greek), Ton Khao (Thai) and Rice Boi (Asian)
Ten days have passed quickIy. It’s the end of our stay and we marvel
that we have had the best holiday ever post pandemic. Mooloolaba is the perfect antidote to relaxed living and the perfect winter escape. When the sun comes up this is the most amazingly place to kick back, relax and do nothing!

Sail Away with History
For first time and seasoned cruisers seeking a warm onboard experience while exploring unique ‘bucket-list’ itineraries, the boutique Fred.Olsen fleet honours a 175-year tradition of providing both. Each of the three elegant ships is designed with wide open deck spaces and comfortable interiors. With just over 1,300 guests, crew can provide a friendly and personal service that sees more return customers than any other cruise line.
The smaller ship size allows cruisers access to far-flung places such as picture-postcard European cities with narrow labyrinthine waterways, rare Arctic wildlife and snow-covered mountains, the lesser known, hauntingly beautiful fjords and blue icebergs of northernmost Norway.
Some cruises provide guests the
momentous experience of crossing the Arctic circle, offering oceanfront views of this extraordinary natural beauty and continuous days under the midnight sun.“Fred.Olsen’s handcrafted Arctic itineraries get you up close and personal in this stunning region of breath-taking landscapes, wildlife and unique cultures, and they are famous for their Aurora Borealis Northern Light cruises in the winter months.” says Joe O’Sullivan, Cruise World.
Fred.Olsen Cruise Line’s new onboard Signature Experiences are designed to help guests get the most out of their cruise, offering everything from culinary Treats of the Region classes and tastings, to special ocean wildlife guest speakers, to Sky at Sea star-gazing, where cruisers can
snuggle with a hot drink and wonder at the night sky with the expert guidance of an onboard astronomer. Each journey is navigated for optimal scenic potential, offering a unique shipboard perspective of the islands, waterways and landscapes en route.
Once docked, a curated programme of optional excursions opens guests up to authentic local experiences, such as dashing through the Nordic landscape behind a husky sled, or a guided mountain trek to chase the enigmatic and magical Northern lights.
From the unspoilt, dramatic coastlines and remote islands of northern Scotland, to the spurting geysers and thundering waterfalls of Iceland, to sailing into the Arctic circle under Norway’s surreal midnight sun,
Early 2024 sees their ship Borealis en route to the southern hemisphere on her world cruise ex the UK. Cruise World has access to a sector of the world voyage offering the opportunity to cruise on a line voyage from Sydney to Southampton.
Cruising with Fred.Olsen delivers once-in-a-lifetime experiences before they even make it onto the bucket list.
One of the great joys of sailing is savouring the journey as much as each destination along the way.Portee Islee of Sky - Scotland

Small-ship cruising in French Polynesia
A simple mention of the words ‘French Polynesia’ conjures up images of white sand beaches, lush rainforests and a welcome reprieve from the cold conditions of a New Zealand winter.
The landscapes and scenery of Tahiti have beckoned to intrepid Kiwi traveller for years. With direct flights linking Auckland to Tahiti’s capital, Papeete, in little over 4 hours, it’s no wonder that those in the know return again and again.
The islands of Tahiti behold some of the most picturesque beaches in the world. The iconic skylines and lush volcanic scenery of the Society Islands, the low-lying coral atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago and the untouched beauty and culture of the Marquesas Islands, each lay protected by surrounding coral reef systems. With limited access by inter-islander plane, a small ship exploration becomes the only way to enjoy a comprehensive (and economical) visit to these island groups.
Operating in French Polynesia since her inception in 1998, Le Paul Gauguin was designed for efficient and intimate access to these stunning lagoons in the South Pacific, where she operates year-round. A multimillion dollar refurbishment, in 2021, saw enormous upgrades to the interiors. A sleek and sophisticated
design that perfectly embodies the hues and textures of the surrounding landscapes.
Options from 7 to 16-night explorations of this sub-tropical paradise are sure to delight every traveller. Free flowing French Champagne and delicious, varied cuisine from the 3 restaurants means there is certainly no going hungry (or thirsty).
With short distances to sail between the islands, long days are spent in port. Plentiful time to enjoy a curated list of hosted optional excursions or to explore and discover independently. Over night stays in the iconic islands of Bora Bora and Moorea are common on selected itineraries. A leisurely pace to explore.
The islands of Tahiti see the same number of tourists in a year, that Hawaii sees in a single day. Despite being off the beaten track, it is only with Paul Gauguin Cruises that you can gain privileged access to private islands and beaches. Paul Gauguin’s exclusive Motu (small island) called Motu Mahana, proves to be a highlight time and time again. Soft white sand beaches, a swim up bar and beach BBQ in a postcard perfect setting – what is not to love.
The warm kiss of the tropical sun and the calm, crystal clear waters of the South Pacific are closer than they may seem. Early booking bonus savings up to 30% can be redeemed for travel in 2023, 2024 or 2025. It’s time to treat yourself with a luxury small ship cruise in Tahiti!
An all-inclusive on-board experience, conducive to complete relation in this paradise.

Superannuant Superheroes
How older
are giving back
and I thought, if I could physically take this money and give it to them, I know from my past experience what an impact that would have on their kids’ lives.”
Generational inequality is a stark reality in New Zealand - our children are three times more likely to live in material hardship compared to those over 65. This sets us apart from most other advanced countries, highlighting the pressing need for action.
Liz says “I thought to myself, I can’t be the only person in this position. There are nearly a million superannuants in this country. Some are still working, or they might have been fortunate enough to accumulate wealth so they have something to spare.”
Lifting up Kiwi kids
The idea for Share My Super was born. It makes it easy for older people who are living a comfortable and fulfilling life in their retirement to donate any surplus super to a range of effective New Zealand children’s charities, in a single secure transaction. Since its inception in 2020, generous retirees have contributed over $1.3 million to Share My Super’s partner charities.
Liz says donors tell her they feel excited to be part of a movement that’s lifting up kids, and through them, New Zealand.
For many of us, the day we received the letter confirming our eligibility for government superannuation payments is etched in memory. Perhaps it marked the beginning of a well-deserved retirement - a time of excitement for some, and trepidation for others. For many New Zealanders, that ‘super’ payment is critical, especially with the current rising cost of living. But for a significant number of over-65s, this financial support may not be entirely necessary.
Lightbulb moment
One such retiree is Liz Greive. She started her career as a social worker, and retired comfortably, having worked hard to build successful businesses and investments. On the day her ‘NZ Super’ letter arrived, she had a lightbulb moment. She didn’t need that extra money, but she knew who did - the 1 in 5 New Zealand children living in poverty, through no fault of their own.
“So many families are struggling,
“I'm not saying that life has been easy for people of my generation, but we were able to have a better life than our parents and our grandparents. And this is probably now the first generation where that isn't happening. We can help change that.”

KiwisShare My Super donor, Graham: “Share My Super does the homework. They make sure that our hard-earned money is used effectively so that kids get a chance."
Are you living comfortably in your later years?
You can transform young lives, and our country’s future, with Share My Super
Share My Super was founded by superannuant and former social worker, Liz Greive. It’s designed for people who are enjoying a comfortable retirement and want to help lift up children who have had a challenging start to life. You can watch a short video of Liz speaking from the heart about why she started the charity at www. sharemysuper.org.nz/joinme.
An effortless way for over60s to make a big impact
Share My Super has partnered with 11 proven children’s charities, all carefully selected and monitored to ensure they’re making a maximum impact on our future generation. You can share any amount of surplus super with one,
some, or all of the charities in a single transaction. Stop, change or pause your giving immediately, at any time - no questions asked. Liz fully funds Share My Super, so that 100% of your donation goes directly to the charities.

Murray River
A mountain stream in its upper reaches, the river turns into a meandering river lined with magnificent forests of red gum and sandy beaches in its lower reaches.
The region is home to plentiful wildlife, supporting over 350 varieties of birds, as well as many species of mammals, reptiles and fish. Along the banks of the river, you’ll find many house boats, with some permanent residences and a very popular well run secure marina for house boats to hire.
If you have the time to traverse the region from end to end, you will delight in the activity and diversity found along the way.
Looking into the early history of Mannum; in 1853 Randell, a pastoralist, launched his paddle steamer Mary Ann at Noa-No Landing, 5km upstream from the present site of Mannum, and in doing so, opened up one of the most romantic eras in the history of Australia. However, in the period 1872-1883 many new farmers, principally of German stock, settled the land to grow cereals and for sheep production.
This paddle steamer, the first on the river Murray, pioneered the navigation route to the stations along the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers, and in the early years, the goldfields of Victoria. Randell transferred his operations
to the present site of Mannum during 1853 when he built a wharf, goods shed and cottage, and from this small beginning, the present township of Mannum evolved. This rich and unique heritage has provided Mannum with the opportunity to become known as the "Birthplace of the Murray River Paddle Steamers".
Paddle steamers were an important connection with early European settlement and development – towing large barges, paddle steamers weaved the winding course of the MurrayDarling system, supplying stations and towns with supplies, and carrying passengers and various goods to market, including mail, wheat, fruit, salt, wood, wool and other livestock products.
The mighty Murray River is one of the world's longest navigable rivers, stretches 2,700 kilometres from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in northeastern Victoria to near Adelaide in South Australia.
"The accommodation was fantastic, with views over the Murray and beyond, stunning sunsets viewed from our enclosed deck, mosquito free!"
Uniquely Norfolk
cows frequently wander the roads and have the right of way, by law! At just 34 square kilometres there is not a great deal of need for motorised transport for many tourists though –so the cows can do as they wish –but there is an astonishing amount to see. In addition to the obvious historical sites of the old settlement and convict quarters – which have UNESCO Heritage status – the natural beauty of the island comes as a huge surprise to many visitors.
...In fact, we’re virtually neighbours, which is why it’s so surprising that many Kiwis know so little about this little piece of Pacific paradise.
Most of us equate it with the Bounty mutineers and as being a gloomy convict colony, but while it is true that many Islanders are descendants of crewmen from The Bounty, the Island’s days as a prison were a remarkably short period of its history. There is, in short, a lot more to Norfolk Island than most of us know.
For a start it has it’s own indigenous language – Norf’k –derived from the 18th century
English of the sailors and the Tahitian language of their wives. Though it is considered an endangered language by UNESCO, the Island’s 2,100 inhabitants are keeping it alive and well. So when you visit don’t be ippy (a silly person) and be sure to say watawieh (hello) and si yourley morla (see you tomorrow) to the locals as you travel around from daffy (here) to deffy (there).
Other local customs worth adopting while you are travelling the Island are the Norfolk Wave –whereby all motorists give each other a friendly gesture when passing – and the rather more peculiar fact that
Over 30% of the Island is national park and there are numerous walks that take you around the highlights: the beautiful blue lagoon of Emily Bay, teeming with fish, the spectacular cliffs of Anson Bay, the 360 degree views from atop Mount Pitt, and the amazing night skies of an island with the rare and coveted Gold Level of the Australian Dark Sky Register.
boasting some of the most spectacular sunsets and sunrises and ocean and sky vistas on earth. For more information and flight details go to: www.airchathams.co.nz
Be sure to bring your camera as Norfolk Island is a photographer’s paradise,
At less than three hours flight time from Auckland International Airport, Norfolk Island really is right in our backyard...
Family break, golf break, surf break, or just a short break – breakaway to Norfolk Island for a well deserved break!
Flights to Norfolk Island depart weekly all year round, from Auckland.

UNSEEN STEWART ISLAND VOYAGEFiorland Discovery
By Brett AtkinsonWelcome to a scene from a Mission Impossible movie, flying by helicopter from Te Anau across a sylvan landscape of mountains and alpine lakes to land on a luxury catamaran.
of Te Waipounamu. Just past the shimmering clarity of Chalky Island – revealed as a southern hemisphere stand-in for the White Cliffs of Dover – we drop fishing lines with electricpowered reels to haul in blue cod from improbably deep waters on the bow.
Albatrosses, mollymawks and terns all soar on shifting breezes at the stern.
Surrounded by the jade-green waters of Preservation Inlet's Isthmus Cove is the Fiordland Jewel, an adventurous haven for 18 passengers on a sixnight voyage through Aotearoa's most spectacular and historic southern region.
We've arrived in Fiordland National Park's southernmost sound, a pristine region excluded from most cruising itineraries, but a remote area with a significant role in New Zealand history. In the 1820s, sealers and whalers populated the bay, and economic optimism saw the development of Cromarty, an 1890s coal-mining town. The Jewel's tender is soon transporting us across
Kisbee Bay to explore Cromarty's faded legacy before we embark on a rolling 6km return hike around kelpadorned coves to historic Puysegur Point. Detritus from past lighthouses leads to a lookout, located on precipitous sea-cliffs at the far southwestern extremity of Fiordland National Park. Returning to the Fiordland Jewel, Central Otago wines and southern kai moana, seasonal produce and locally sourced meats transform the boat into a uniquely remote fine-dining restaurant.
From Rakituma/Preservation Inlet, the Jewel exits to the Tasman Sea, tracing a path north along the southwestern coastline
The Fiordland Jewel's northward journey continues past West Cape, prosaically named by dour Yorkshireman Captain James Cook when he sailed past in the HMS Endeavour in 1770. Three years later he returned on the HMS Resolution, entering Tamatea/Dusky Sound, a sheltered haven that's our anchorage for two days. Following 122 days at sea, including time below the Antarctic Circle, Cook and his crew stayed for five weeks to replenish and recharge. Our own more limited time in Dusky includes kayaking amid indigo-coloured waters, and exploring the predator-free kākāpō sanctuary of Pukenui/Anchor Island. Fresh homestyle baking served both morning and afternoon provides essential sustenance between Fiordland adventures, before the Jewel detours west through a labyrinth of islands to cruise past Breaksea Island and continue north to Doubtful Sound.
'Doubtful' his ship could exit the narrow sound framed by towering cliffs, Cook never entered our final destination, but we're soon experiencing what the Resolution missed out on. Mist clings to forested hillsides, Tasman squalls sweep in to ignite multiple waterfalls, and the meeting of land and sea known to Māori as Patea ('Place of Silence') is worthy of its name.
TRAVEL OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
We offer high-end adventure cruising aboard the Fiordland Jewel, our boutique catamaran, purpose-built to give guests like you a once-in-alifetime experience that you’ll never forget. With a maximum of just 18 passengers on board, all our nine climate-controlled cabins have sea views and private ensuites.

Gold for the golden years
For more than 25 years, Summerset has been dedicated to creating retirement villages that go beyond mere living spaces and evolve into thriving communities.
Summerset is committed to bringing the best of life to their residents. Winning Gold for Group Provider Nationwide in Aged Advisor’s 2023 annual awards underscores the genuine affection their residents have for the lifestyle they offer.
AgedAdvisor founder Nigel Matthews says, “Winners are based purely on independent reviews and ratings from residents throughout New Zealand. Summerset have received consistently high ratings from residents and their families.” This recognition validates their approach of fostering vibrant communities - coupled with outstanding service - where residents truly love the life they choose.
In addition to the Group Provider Gold award, five Summerset villages were named finalists for the Best Retirement Village award. These are Canterbury-based Summerset on Cavendish, Summerset Prebbleton and Summerset Wigram, Wanganui’s Summerset in the River City, and Summerset in the Orchard in Hawke’s Bay. Their residents are fiercely
proud of their communities, with one stating, “I vote every year for our village as I genuinely believe it is the best.” Another resident agrees, saying, “I just love my life living in this village, best decision I ever made.”
Summerset CEO Scott Scoullar says, “This is a terrific achievement and one we should take pride in, particularly as it is voted for by our residents. We have more than 2,500 staff whose goal it is to bring the best of life to our residents and ensure they love living in our villages.
“We are committed to nurturing relationships, delivering exceptional experiences, and embracing innovation to provide the best experience for our residents, and it’s very pleasing our hard work has been recognised by them and they’ve voted for us.”
Summerset firmly believe that retirement should be a time of relaxation, enjoyment, and pursuing long-held desires, so they have a range of fantastic facilities that residents love. They offer a variety of homes to suit all needs and tastes,
and residents can opt for assistance if needed. Care centres are available in most Summerset villages, providing rest home level care or hospital care as circumstances change. With a 24-hour on-site team, residents enjoy security and peace of mind.
Staying active is made easy with facilities such as swimming pools, recreation bowling greens and gyms on site.
A full calendar of organised activities and social events caters to all interests and there are plenty of teams and clubs to join for those who would like to keep up a hobby or learn a new one.
Moving into a retirement community involves financial considerations. Summerset pride themselves on straightforward pricing contracts, with no hidden clauses or confusing jargon. Residents can simply focus on what truly matters – enjoying their retirement to the fullest.

The Importance of Balance Exercises
Put simply, the act of standing on two feet requires balance, even if you’re no more conscious of it, as you are of breathing. If you’ve ever watched a baby emerge from crawling to become a toddler, when they pull themselves up onto two feet and try to walk, you’ll notice how much balance is a challenge.
There’s more to balancing than having good muscle tone and leg strength. We use many muscles in our body for stability, as well as our skeleton, vestibular system (the inner ear) and our brain. Balance is one of those essential skills which deteriorates with age, but you don’t have to lose it. Doing exercises regularly help you maintain this key skill we learnt in infanthood.
Why does balance deteriorate with age?
We take balance for granted throughout much of our lives, but the coordination between the brain, muscles and inner ear can deteriorate
over time. The common indicators for losing your sense of balance are developing poor posture or feeling fatigue while standing upright.
Doing balance exercises slows this process, keeping your brain, muscles and inner ear working as if your body were younger. While it may not be the Fountain of Youth, balance exercises are proven to stave off some of the effects of getting older.
Preventing and minimising the impact of falls
Balance exercises do more than just work the muscles we use for balance. They allow us to maintain control of our core and limbs. Have you ever watched a dancer walking and thought how gracefully they move? This is because dancers have excellent balance.
This controlled elegance of movement allows your body to react, adapt and change quickly to any hazards threatening your ability to maintain balance. If you slip, you’re more likely to remain standing than fall, which in turn builds confidence when leaving the house. If you do fall, you’re far less likely to suffer physical damage like a broken hip.
Building good posture
We have an increasing problem in society with bad posture. The two main causes are limited movement patterns and leading a sedentary lifestyle. These cause problems like hunched shoulders and poor back mobility. We simply aren’t giving our bodies the type of exercise it needs.
Balance exercises are ideal for building better posture. They help you reconnect to skills natural to the human form. As you build better balance, you build better posture, and in turn, better posture helps you build better balance!
Balance is fundamental to all bodily movement.
Improving your coordination
Have you ever wondered at the marvel of a cat walking along a fence without a care for the idea it could fall? All animals in their natural habitat develop excellent coordination. Human beings were once like this too, but our modern lifestyles have narrowed the scope of the tasks we would have done to maintain good coordination.
Balance exercises help to restore your involuntary responses to stimuli, allowing you to adapt intuitively to differing physical challenges. Like the cat walking along a fence, you’ll feel like physical challenges are pathways, not an accident waiting to happen.
Balance exercises complement any workout
Anyone, of any fitness level or fitness regime can incorporate balance
exercises into their workout routine. Balance exercises are low-intensity, meaning they don’t interfere with, or interrupt, muscle recovery from other forms of exercise.
In fact, balance exercises are known to improve the benefits you get from other forms of exercise. For example, if you run, developing better posture and coordination to support your centre of gravity reduces potential injuries and gives you a better workout.
Balance exercises strengthen muscle groups that don’t normally get used, which fine tunes your body and gives it greater overall strength. No matter your age or fitness level, balance exercises will only promote better health.
Using an app like Nymbl is a great way of tailoring exercises to your physical ability and takes you through each exercise step-by-step. If you are finding it too hard, you can opt for a simpler version, or perhaps you want to make it harder? Nymbl allows you to increase the difficulty a notch, helping you to improve faster!
The Spring Menu
By Alison MacaulayWelcome to our last ‘seasonal menu’ of 2023. Whilst we have been hit with some pretty horrendous increases in food, packaging and plant costs this year ... we have managed to keep our own prices relatively low for you all.
We have had to increase our prices by 60 cents in the upcoming menu, but looking across the ready-meal market, we are still one of the more cost effective options, with the best variety and quality.
As well as being great value, ordering from EAT offers:
• Easy and convenient meals
• Meals you don’t have the time or energy to make … think roasted or slow-cooked meats that melt in your mouth, for instance!
• A variety of 9 different meals to choose from each week... plus soups and desserts
• Nutritious, balanced and tasty food, created by professional chefs
• Portion controlled – not too big and not to small!
• Affordable and flexible (no contracts or regular commitment required).
• Zero waste.
• Peace of mind that your food is being prepared in a clean and controlled kitchen environment, with the highest quality control and safety standards …. to ensure that every meal is safe,
fresh, and delicious, ready to be enjoyed by you. Our Spring menu takes us right through to Christmas. Then comes our much-anticipated Christmas and Holiday menu - be sure to check that one out from late November (for delivery between 18th December and 14th January). If you are thinking you might want to have a hassle free Christmas and wish to be kept in the loop ...
Please visit our website www.eat.co.nz and join our mailing list ... or just take a peek in late November ... Salmon, Lamb Rack, Turkey ... I love Christmas!
And nothing says Christmas more than our famous Christmas Cake! This will be available for sale from 13th November … just in time to get you in the festive mood or to buy as a delicious Christmas gift. These are the same size as our sultana cakes, with a butter cream
icing and Christmas holly decoration made of fondant icing. Margaret (my mother and the founder of EAT) has been making this cake for over 50 years. She would soak the fruit and nuts for months … it was a labour of love. However, as a child, I hated fruit cake …. but I loved almonds! So I would find the freshly-baked Christmas cakes and dig out all the almonds… then put it back! Mum was not happy when she would offer her visitors some cake with a cuppa ... only to find it hacked and pillaged! I have since learnt to appreciate the cake in its entirety, so no need to worry about childhood antics affecting the EAT cakes.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last year ... whether you are a regular customer or one that taps in occasionally due to time or circumstance... we appreciate each and every one of you. We hope you enjoy this menu and we look forward to being your personal chef, feeding you into 2024 and beyond.
If you have not yet discovered the pleasure of an EAT meal … get online at www.eat.co.nz or give us a call on 0800 328 333.

How to Stay Motivated to Exercise
Are you Comfortable?
Are your exercise clothes and shoes comfortable? I don’t know about you, but if something isn’t comfortable, I tend not to wear it. There is a huge range of exercise gear on the market at the moment, so why not shop around and find something you enjoy wearing?
Get everything ready the night before
Have a light rain jacket or hat in case it’s wet. Make sure your iPod is charged, headphones handy, and your water bottle is full. Then when the alarm goes off and the brain is
still fuzzy, there’s no need to think, as everything is all ready for you to pull on and get out the door!
Join a local walking/running/ cycling group
Again, it’s easier to get out of bed if you know a group of people will be waiting for you. Plus it saves you the hassle of trying to work out a route, as they will have done it for you.
Finish at your favourite cafe! Go on, you’ve earned it. Get that (trim) flat white in hand, and wander off into the distance satisfied you have done your daily activity, regardless of the time of year!
Embrace Nature
Nothing recharges the batteries like spending time in nature. Find a local park or nature walk, team up with a friend and get moving (in daylight hours, for safety).
Try Something Different
Change things up and have a go at something different. Always go walking? Try a gentle swim. Always run the hills? Try a cycle instead (just remember to check with your doctor first).
Hopefully these tips will help you stay on target for your exercise programme, as we head into spring before we know it!
Without a care in the world
There are others worth mentioning too, including the fact that we’re “real people”, accessible by phone and email, and we’re always willing to share what’s happening, whether that be through quarterly newsletters or at our annual investor meetings.
As well as delivering a consistent return, we’ve prioritised making it simple to get started with us, with no huge investment required. For as little as $500, you can join our pool of investors and you can transfer more funds at any time. Unlike mainstream bank term deposits, your money isn’t locked away for a set period, but we do recommend you invest for at least 2 years.
At First Mortgage Trust, our proven investment model is easy to understand, simple to get started, and your funds are backed by hundreds of quality properties in New Zealand.
So how does it work?
At its heart, FMT is a pooled mortgage investment scheme. What this means is that your funds are pooled with those of thousands of other Kiwis. Then, with careful due diligence and lots of checks and balances, we lend out those funds secured against first-mortgages on quality property focused in the economic strongholds of New Zealand. Interest is earned
across the portfolio, and then distributed quarterly to our investor base (after fees, expenses, and tax are deducted), to make for regular and consistent income.
We’ve been operating this activemanagement model since 1996, and as we’ve grown, we’ve opened offices where the majority of our investments are made. This ensures we’ve got our finger on the pulse. Our lending team only make decisions with investors front of mind – and if we decide something is too risky, we’ll simply walk away from it and wait for the next opportunity.
The final attribute mentioned by many, is that FMT is Kiwi through and through. Not only are our roots here, but our investors are from here and our lending is done here, which makes for a better New Zealand for us all.

Having a disciplined approach is just one of many factors that has underpinned our success over the past 27 years.
If you’re looking for a peace-of-mind ‘set and forget’ investment to complement your lifestyle, then we’ve got you covered.

When you want your home to tell a story, your choice of furniture needs to reflect this. Create a story to pass down through the generations with beautiful furniture pieces created right here in New Zealand.
The Opera furniture collection, available exclusively at Harvey Norman, allows you to do just this.
Opera is crafted by the Sorenson family who have been creating quality, memorable furniture for three generations. From sharing a small space in a factory with dirt floors and pretty basic equipment, they have certainly grown in both family size and factory size and since 1994 have been based in Whanganui, and in their thirty thousand square foot factory family members work alongside their team to produce high quality, New Zealand designed and made furniture.
In the early days they worked with pine before moving to Rimu,
When quality & craftsmanship counts
which proved so popular people were lining up at the door waiting for the next piece! Their love of Rimu has remained throughout the years and has led to develop some pretty special relationships with timber merchants in remote parts of New Zealand, harvesting and milling sustainable Rimu on small pockets of land. These are small, independent operations, who either forest sustainably, or are pulling fallen logs out of the bush as part of their annual cycles of foraging and living off the land – milling wood, collecting moss and whitebaiting, a different activity for each season.
Designed with attention to detail this range is crafted using quality construction techniques and features highly decorative grain and colour. This beautiful furniture range brings a story to pass down through the generations into your home.

“Out & Abouters” visit to the Gemstone & Fossil Museum
Although the day started out foggy and bleak as the Rolleston Central Probus “Out & About-ers” set off for a visit to the Gemstone & Fossil Museum at Birdlings Flat, by the time they arrived it was a sunny 23 degrees.
Birdlings Flat (originally Te Mata Hapuku) in Canterbury has a long wind-swept, stony beach open to the Pacific Ocean, known to fossickers for its gemstones. It is not safe to swim there, but at times seals can be seen having “time out” on the beach.
The Club members went fossicking on the beach for gemstones and all brought home a rock or two and one even had an armful of driftwood.
Mosgiel Men’s Probus 40th Anniversary
Friendships old and new were to the fore when Mosgiel Men’s Probus Club marked its 40th anniversary. Eighty members, their wives, and partners were joined by Mosgiel Rotary’s President John, as well as Probus Clubs Director Tony Blaber for a lunch celebration at Digger’s Restaurant at Mosgiel RSA. Mosgiel Men’s Probus Club President Ross Merrett said the club was founded in 1983, as a social and friendship group. Taieri Rotary Club charter member and long-standing Mosgiel Men’s Probus
Club member Ray said the club is a large and vibrant group, which is an interesting club to be part of, and always happy to welcome new members.
20th anniversary celebrations
At the recent monthly meeting of the Wellington Combined Probus Club, a special twentieth birthday cake was ceremonially cut by the Club President, Christine who opened the meeting with joy and later the cake was enjoyed by all at teatime. Four of the Club’s past presidents spoke about the early days of the Club. Christine thanked the former Presidents for their reminiscences and for the work that each did during their term.

Oceanside Probus Club
By Pat TondiHistory; one of 8 children, At 15 years of age
Married an Italian and we have a lovely daughter Rose. Lived in a little village Marigliano near Naples (where no one spoke English) for 13 wonderful years. It’s definitely the best way to learn about their language, customs & culture. Whilst there I taught Italian children English and took them to London during the holidays to help prepare them for their big exams prior to going to High School.
Regional Evenings, helping my daughter with Open Homes and other real estate PA work, making friends at Probus meetings and reading anything I can get my hands on.
Why did I choose Probus? Having moved into a new area I needed to meet people of my own age and as I give out with my teaching I wanted to sit and listen to amazing speakers who do amazing things.
looking after more than 200 children. (Many of whom I’m still in touch with today)
At 23 years of age, back in 1955, I took off on my big O.E. alone. (That was an adventure)! Worked in Australia, Wales & Switzerland as a waitress and in England as a home help because in doing so in those days you aways had a roof over your head and food to eat.
Returned to N.Z and whilst living in the country at Waikoau, I did 32 papers in Childcare. Moved to Napier & worked as a teller at Post Bank & did 8 papers in banking. When Post Bank amalgamated with ANZ, I began working as a teller at Napier City Council and then did my papers and became a PA for a couple of real estate agents
Two years ago, I moved to Mount Maunganui to be closer to my daughter. Now at 80 years of age I pass my days walking my daughter’s dog Prada, pottering in my garden, teaching Italian from home here in the Mount and also via zoom with my Napier students, hosting Potluck
I tried ringing around several clubs and Brenda the President of Oceanside Probus Club in Mount Maunganui was so caring and followed up even though I couldn’t begin attending because of catching Covid. When I did join, I found so many caring people and feel comfortable in the group and am now a committee member.
Although everything I have done has been because of my love for all things Italian, this year I was really humbled to be nominated for a Queens Service Medal which I received in April.
My Life has been amazing and what is even more amazing is that all this has been accomplished without a car as I gave up driving when I got tuberculosis back in Italy 40 odd years ago.
I left school & started working at the telephone exchange.

The importance of getting legal advice
before moving into a retirement village
By Kate Warren - Legal Specialistmove to be near your partner, that can have a financial effect through paying the deferred management fees.
Kate says the deferred management fees vary between villages but it’s usually 20 to 30 per cent of the occupancy advance/entry payment that you pay when you move into your unit.
“Some villages have fixed fees but others don’t so people need to be aware about what the policy is in the village they are considering and may need to factor potential for change into their budgeting.
“You also need to be mindful of the continuum of care. For instance if a couple move into a village but one later needs more care. If that isn’t available at that village, they might have to move to a facility in a different village that may not be easy for their partner to visit, especially if they don’t drive. If you then have to
“We make sure people are very well-informed. For instance, what level of care is provided in the village, is there a rest home, hospital or psycho geriatric care, and if they need to transfer to a care facility, will they have priority access to an available bed?
“For some people, knowing they can have visitors to stay or if they can take their pets with them to the village is important. We also ensure people know they can’t make alterations or additions to their village home and cannot rent it out to anyone else, the ORA is personal to the resident.”
Undertaking a lot of ORA work means Kate frequently works with elderly people who are facing major life changes.
“We see a whole range of people and situations. Some people have lost a partner, some have been quite isolated. Some are excited about the social aspects of moving into a community but some people may be reluctant.
“Often people first come to us because they are considering selling the family home and then come to us for the ORA. It works very well to be handling both because, for instance, if the family home is in a trust most villages do not allow for the purchase of the occupation right through a family trust. So, we can work through what needs to be done around that and also align the settlement dates.
“Moving home is never easy but getting sound advice from a lawyer does help reduce the stress and provides people with trust that they will be looked after properly.”
“It is beneficial for people to have the support of family and often people will factor proximity to their children into a decision - but it is important for us to make sure it is what that person wants and needs and to ensure the village they choose offers the level of care they will need going forward.
