Welcometo the special edition of Active Retirees magazine commemorating Probus Day and featuring The Travel Corporation (TTC).

As the world’s leading family-owned travel company, TTC recently joined our Partnership Program as a Gold Partner and in this issue, we share travel articles and destinations that are available to book by individual Probus Club members or for Club group bookings. Probus Partners provide exclusive discounts to Probus Club members, so please consider the offers available in this issue.

The Probus Community celebrated the inaugural Probus Day on 1 October 2020 in the midst of a pandemic. Since its introduction, we have seen Probus Day and in fact, Probus Month become a resounding success, despite the challenges of the last two years which impacted celebrations in 2020 and 2021. This success can only be attributed to the collective work of the team in Parramatta and the thousands of volunteers in Clubs and Associations embracing the Probus Day concept.

It is equally pleasing to see that this concept has gone global with a number of countries now celebrating Probus Month in October. We have been proud to share the range of promotional collateral produced by our team with these countries, helping to promote Probus internationally.

This year the theme for Probus Day was “Probus Provides Unlimited Possibilities in Retirement”. I have visited many Clubs during my time at Probus and while our common philosophy is fun and friendship, each Club provides something different in what it offers its members: outings, activities, interest groups, guest speakers and of course, the friendships. When someone becomes a member of Probus, the possibilities are truly unlimited.

For Probus Day 2022, we have been very fortunate to receive Community support during Probus Month with over 42 Landmarks lit up across all Australian States and Territories as well as 29 Landmarks lit in Probus colours in New Zealand.

We also received numerous messages of support from government representatives who have also showcased Probus to the wider community through promotions in their newsletters and social media as part of our celebrations. While we continue to maintain our nonpolitical stance, this support is a clear demonstration of the value Probus brings to individual communities.

In addition to coordinating the lighting of all landmarks, a number of special events were arranged by the service and support team in Parramatta including functions hosted by the Governors of Western Australia and Queensland. Membership Representatives in New Zealand coordinated a reception for over 300 Probians in the Grand Hall of Parliament in Wellington. This was an incredible event attended by New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Grant Robertson and New Zealand Probus South Pacific Representative Director, Tony Blaber, Past Rotary District

Governor, Gillian Jones, Director of the Office for Seniors, Diane Turner and the Deputy Leader of the National Party, Nicola Willis.

Across both countries, Clubs forged together and arranged open days and set up tables at expos to showcase Probus. Individually many Clubs arranged BBQs, picnics, themed functions, cruises, presentation of Probus Day Awards to members and much more. I encourage everyone to take the time to read this issue to see how members of your Probus Community celebrated Probus Day. We received so many photos and stories about Probus Day Celebrations that they could not all be featured in this one edition. However, we hope to share them all progressively across our range of publications.

All of this activity started with the idea of a National Day to celebrate our community and I am sure that you all join me in thanks to PSPL’s Chairman Judith Maestracci AM for this amazing concept.

This month I will be reaching 15 years of service to the Probus Community, and I have been truly amazed at how the Probus family has evolved during this time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many thousands of Probus members I have had the pleasure of meeting, in person, by phone and yes on ZOOM, and of course those volunteers on the PSPL Board. I can honestly say that our organisation is very lucky to have so many volunteers across Clubs and Associations committed to the provision of Probus fun, friendship and fellowship to thousands of retirees across Australia and New Zealand.

Finally, I need to say thanks to the team in Parramatta who work extremely diligently to support our Community.

On behalf of the Team, I hope that all members had an enjoyable Probus Day, and trust that you will enjoy reading this issue of Active Retirees.

Yours in Probus friendship, Silvana Martignago | Chief Executive Officer

Probus Day 2022

October is the month that recognises Probus Worldwide

This month, Clubs in Christchurch celebrated Probus day at the Hornby Club and 93 members from Christchurch Probus Clubs were in attendance at a day that fulfilled the objectives of Probus Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship.

Members arrived at 11:30 am and assembled in a large room, which was beautifully decorated in blue and yellow.

David came and played the piano during the deliciously appetising meal. Six Shannon Irish dancers performed between the main and dessert courses and a colourful musical interlude that had members all tapping their toes.

The third group of entertainers were the Darfield Ukulele Band who played nostalgic tunes and encouraged members to sing along with them.

The Best-Dressed Woman Award was won by Adrienne from West Melton Probus Club, and the BestDressed Man Award went to Derk from Hornby Probus Club. The day concluded with a raffle.

A big thank you to the organisers of this highly enjoyable day, Jean and Esme who are both Life Members and Probus Ambassadors. They were very pleased with the successful event which they had been planning since the beginning of this year.

It was a most enjoyable and friendly occasion for all who attended.

Probus NZ Celebrate Probus Day 2022 at Parliament House

The Johnsonville Probus Club on Wednesday the 5th of October joined with other Probus Clubs in the Wellington area to celebrate Probus Day 2022. A total of 324 Probus members from the 22 Clubs in the Wellington area as far north as Levin were hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Grant Robertson, at a Parliamentary Reception in the Banquet Hall in the Beehive.

The programme was presided over by the President of the Wellington Central Probus Club, Margaret and comprised a welcome from the Deputy Prime Minister and presentations from a range of speakers including the New Zealand Probus South Pacific Representative Director, Tony Blaber, Past Rotary District Governor, Gillian Jones, Director of the Office for Seniors, Diane Turner and the Deputy Leader of the National Party, Nicola Willis. The common theme from all presenters was the important role Probus Clubs play in the lives of retirees through providing opportunities to connect socially, stay mentally and physically active and perhaps, more importantly, provide members with the opportunity to make new friends.

Those attending the celebrations at the Beehive were reminded that the benefits of social connections in the mature generation include an improvement

in mental health and well-being, reducing the risk of anxiety, depression and of course, loneliness. Speakers commented that the last two years have highlighted just how critical these social connections are to the quality of life of seniors.

Another feature of the Probus Day celebrations in Wellington is the illumination of the Michael Fowler Centre in the Probus Colours of yellow and blue during the period 18th to the 21st of October to celebrate retirement and the unlimited opportunities it can bring to those who have reached retirement age.

Thank you to The Wellington Central Probus Club, member Peter Cullen and PDCs Douglas Langford and Max Bowyer for their initiative in co-ordinating this significant event, as well as all those members that attended.

Darwin Probus Club, Charles Darwin Probus Club, Marrara Probus Club & Palmerston Probus Club

Friday 7th October saw the 4 Probus Clubs of the top end gather for a combined morning tea at the Pearl Retirement Village in the Black Pearl recreation centre.

At least 80 members from across the 4 Clubs attended. The morning was opened by the Northern Territory Minister for Seniors – The Hon Lauren Moss MLA followed by entertainment from each of the Clubs.

In keeping with the National Probus Day theme – Unlimited possibilities in retirement, Mara, a member of the Darwin Probus Club and teacher of Scottish, Irish and English dancing led a small group in some English dances from the 1700s showing that the sequencing of steps is not a barrier for any age group and really good for memory. This was followed by Michael from the Marrara Club demonstrating the somewhat haunting Native American traditional drumming and a spiritual calling from the Eskimos on his drum. Ron from Darwin Probus Club read some of his writings about Probus, Dawn from Palmerston and Val from Charles Darwin entertained with some stories and jokes.

After a very substantial morning tea, members of the Pearlers music group provided music for songs the members all knew the words to. Several members of the Pearlers, mostly residents at the Pearl Retirement Village, were Probus members. Bill, leader of the Pearlers group led the group by singing the Top End Probus song which he had written two years ago. The Pearlers are frequently asked to provide entertainment at a variety of facilities around Darwin.

So, all in all, a great morning of fun and friendship was experienced by the combined Clubs in celebration of National Probus Day.

CLUB - QLD

Rita joined Alexandra Headland Probus Club on the 21st of January 2008. She served twice as Vice President and now is the President for the second time (2022-2023).

Rita has also organised Guest Speakers and has stepped in for Guest Speakers who failed to turn up. She has also run the Book Club for many years.

On top of this, Rita has been happy to assist in any area workwise and is more than happy to take part in all activities, especially where singing or reading odes is concerned. She is a very special member of the Club and, at age 84, still “rocks”.

ALEXANDRA HEADLAND

PROBUS CLUB - QLD Kae has organised all the Club activities for many years, including long and short trips, monthly luncheons, outings to the theatre, fine dining, special luncheons, and joint Probus events. She is a very active and wellrespected member of the Club.

JOHN KARRINYUP & NORTH BEACH PROBUS CLUB - WA

On the morning of the June meeting, the Club were thrilled to hear that one of the members, Diane, had that very morning been announced as a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Performing Arts Education.

Congratulations Diane from all members of the Karrinyup and North Beach Probus Club!

John was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Karrinyup and North Beach Probus Club at the June meeting. John joined the Club with his wife Marie in June 2004. It wasn’t long before he was helping Tom and Jerry (true!) in the kitchen preparing the morning teas. Then, after his ‘apprenticeship’, John held the position of Refreshments Coordinator from 2006 to 2017 – a total of 11 consecutive years. Even now he is always helping the girls in the kitchen.

In November 2014, together with Marie, they introduced and organised a Sausage Sizzle at Jackadder Lake. This was such a successful event that it became an annual outing until John became unwell last year.

John has supported the Club by attending most outings, and always with a smile. He is still helping whenever needed. His consideration of others, his dedication to the Club, his community spirit, his ability to make new members welcome and his friendship and comradeship are unequalled.

BETTINE MOSMAN PARK COMBINED PROBUS CLUB – WA

Bettine is truly an amazing Probian, offering support and assistance to those in need since she was 18. In her younger years, Bettine was accepted as a Volunteer Guide at Government House in Perth and was one of the few volunteers to attend to Queen Elizabeth II when she and Prince Philip, unbeknown to the press, stopped off in Perth on their return journey to England.

When asked what her greatest achievement has been, Bettine acknowledged it was such an Honour to be awarded the Order of Australia in recognition of being a volunteer guide for twenty-five years, being on the Karrakatta Club, arranging their speakers for twelve years and being a Probus member for over thirty years.

It is evident that Bettine has been deeply entrenched with Probus. Not only did she join City Beach Ladies Probus Club forty-eight years ago, but took on many roles including Catering, Outings Officer, and Treasurer. Subsequently, this Club merged with Floreat Park. Bettine is currently a member of the Mosman Park Combined Probus Club, which she and her late husband enjoyed together. She also is a member of Dalkeith/Nedlands Probus Club and the newly appointed Wembley Downs Probus Club in which she has taken the role of Speakers Officer. Bettine started up this Club so her contribution, based on experience, is very much appreciated.

JOAN PELICAN WATERS PROBUS CLUB - QLD

Joan Hooper and her late husband John were Foundation Members of the Pelican Waters Probus Club. They both actively participated in a wide range of Club activities from the Peli-Olympics, The Races, Trivia Nights, Club Birthdays, Australia Day Picnics and so much more. Joan is the consummate hostess, and everyone is always welcome at morning teas and lunches at her home.

For many years, Joan has taken on an unofficial role of checking in on other members, particularly the older members, as they became frailer. She would pick up a number of older members, complete with walkers and other aids, ensuring they safely arrived at meetings and returned home safely so they too could enjoy Club friendship and fellowship. Her caring continued far beyond the meetings, and she always ensured these older members were well cared for with visits and meals.

Joan has always cared for other members of the Club, checking on those who were unwell and doing whatever she could to help. She is now the Welfare Officer.

Her follow-up phone calls to monitor members’ progress often feature her willingness to arrange further support. Through the Covid lockdowns, Joan regularly rang other members to check on their well-being, something she has continued to do as life has returned to ‘normal’. Her cheery conversation and happy nature always leave the recipients of her calls on a high. This is all while she has her own health issues with which to contend.

Joan conscientiously contributes to many of the funeral services that celebrate the lives of members who have passed. Whether it be the wording in the Club’s Pelicans’ Brief or comment in the Eulogy, Joan’s involvement is always forthcoming and very relevant, due to her extensive involvement with so many members, since foundation, 14 years ago.

For the past few years, Joan has coordinated the Club’s Tea Angels, a group of volunteers who assist other members during morning tea at meetings, by getting their cuppa and taking it to the member at their seats. This initiative by Joan has been much appreciated and is seen as another example of the friendship and fellowship that is so important in the Club.

Joan is one of the most generous, kindest, and considerate people you could ever meet. Her concern for the well-being of other members of the Club is very genuine and is always very much appreciated.
